The phytoplankton productivity of Georgian Bay was studied during 1974. Lakewide samples were collected at 16 stations during monthly cruises from April to December and identification and enumeration was carried out by the Utermohl technique. Contaminant bioassays with metals added singly and as a mixture were performed in 1980 and 1981. Based on an overall average, Diatomeae (36–73%) was the most prevalent component of phytoplankton biomass followed by Chrysophyceae (5–38%), and Cyanophyta (3–27%). Biomass means of all stations by cruise indicated a range of 0.35 to 0.61 g·m–3 with a bimodal seasonal pattern. Although ultraplankton made the highest mean percent contribution to the biomass (37%), the other size assemblages such as < 5 µm (26%) and netplankton (29%) were not unimportant.Size fractionation of primary productivity during 1974 revealed that a major portion of photosynthesis (39–70%) was in the <20 µm size fraction. Algal Fractionation Bioassays conducted during 1980 and 1981 indicated a significant inhibition of ultraplankton productivity. Additional bioassays with single metals and in combination showed differential toxicity to various phytoplankton size assemblages. The phytoplankton biomass and floristic composition indicate the Georgian Bay ecosystem to be oligotrophic. This ecosystem appears to be controlled by the physical dynamics of thermal and flow regimes. Compared with other Great Lakes, the low P/B quotients recorded in oligotrophic Georgian Bay is enigmatic and may be attributable to the observed sensitivity of phytoplankton to contaminants originating from anthropogenic and natural sources.  相似文献

Thirty-nine subgeneric taxa of macroalgae have been collected from 83 sites in Georgian Bay, the North Channel and their drainage basin. There were 15 species in the Bay and Channel and 32 species in streams, rivers and impoundments in the basin. Only 8 of the Bay and Channel species were also found in the watershed. Cladophora glomerata was the most important species in Georgian Bay and the North Channel, having an estimated 640 × 103 m2 cover and 19 × 104 kg fresh weight standing crop. However, this species was largely concentrated on the southwestern shorelines of these water bodies. Its distribution along the northeastern shoreline appears to be limited by total ion and phosphorus levels. Chara globularis/vulgaris was the subdominant taxon in Georgian Bay and the North Channel with an estimated 70 × 103 m2 cover and 15 × 103 kg fresh weight biomass. This species was more widely distributed than C. glomerata. No other taxon contributed significantly to the standing crop including the frequently occurring Ulothrix zonata, Zygnema spp. and Spirogyra spp. The maximum benthic macroalgal biomass was estimated to be approximately 10% of the phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

The phytoplankton and nutrient status of the embayments between Penetanguishene and Waubaushene in southern Georgian Bay (Severn Sound) were examined during the ice-free periods of 1973–1982 because the area showed symptoms of excessive nutrient enrichment. Four wastewater treatment plants currently discharge to the area, another is under construction and a sixth plant has been proposed. Except for Penetang Bay, the area is well-mixed by prevailing winds but is somewhat isolated from the main part of Georgian Bay. Average phytoplankton biomasses throughout the area were 10–20× higher than values from adjacent Nottawasaga Bay where, during 1980, total phytoplankton biomass ranged between 0.15 and 0.25 mm3 · l–1. Total phosphorus concentrations were highest in Penetang Bay, ranging between 30 and 49 µg P · l–1 (May–September means) over the 10 year period. Phosphorus concentrations in Nottawasaga Bay averaged 4–6 µg P · l–1 and no significant differences were detected among the sampling stations; however, phytoplankton densities at stations near urban centres and river inflows were significantly higher than at more remote offshore sites and attests to the use of phytoplankton as a sensitive measure of trophic status in Georgian Bay.Although improvement of Severn Sound water quality to a level comparable to that presently existing in Nottawasaga Bay may never be practical, steps are being taken to control high industrial phosphorus loading and to lessen bypassing of sewage treatment facilities previously hydraulically overloaded during periods of heavy runoff. These measures, along with an evaluation of other major sources of nutrients to Severn Sound, should enable a refinement of the nutrient management programme for Severn Sound and some improvement in trophic status.  相似文献

Intensive surveys of Georgian Bay and the North Channel were done in 1974 and 1980. This paper reviews the main findings of the surveys and describes the main factors that determine the chemistry of the two water bodies. Georgian Bay is oligotrophic. Its chemistry is determined chiefly by natural phenomena, specifically the geology of the drainage basin and the river runoff in the spring, and by exchange with Lake Huron and the North Channel. Localized eutrophication is found in the bays along the southern shore. The chemistry of the North Channel is determined by its very short residence time — about two years — caused by the large inflow from St. Mary's River. The water quality in the river reflects that of Lake Superior and the inputs of nutrients and contaminants from Sault Ste. Maire. Because of the short flushing time, the Channel remains oligotrophic despite the large loadings of phosphorus.  相似文献

The combined effect of temperature (5, 10, 15, and 20°C) and illumination (40 and 60 mE/(m2 s)) on growth and reproduction of the green marine alga Ulva fenestrata P. et R. from the sublittoral zone of Amursky Bay, Sea of Japan, was studied in the laboratory environment in the months April–July, 2000. It was demonstrated that the temperature of 5°C and illumination of 40 mE/(m2 s) are the most favorable for maintaining the vegetative mass of the algae. A water temperature of 10°C and illumination of 40 mE/(m2 s) are the optimum conditions for vegetative growth of U. fenestrata thalli. A temperature decrease and increase by 5°C reduces the growth rate on average by 30%. Sporo- and gametogenesis in U. fenestrata are the most regular (every 10 days) and occupy the greatest disk area at a water temperature of 15°C and illumination of 40 mE/(m2 s). Vegetative growth of thalli is sharply inhibited at the stage of cell preparation to gametogenesis a day before the beginning of gamete formation.  相似文献

On three research cruises in 1981, zooplankton community filtration rates were measured at 4 stations: Saginaw Bay, mid-Lake Huron, Georgian Bay and North Channel. For all four stations, the highest rates were observed during the late-September cruise. The maximum observed rate was 137 000 ml d–1 m–3, while the lowest rate was 7200 ml d–1 m–3. The grazing experiments were performed on three size classes of radioactively labelled algal food (0.45–5 µm, 5–20 µm and 20–64 µm). In 11 of 12 experiments, the smallest size class of food yielded the highest filtration rate. For the late-May cruise we used published data on phytoplankton biomass for the Georgian Bay and North Channel stations to calculate community feeding rates of 0.09 and 0.015 mg C mg C m–3 d–1, respectively, and percent cropping rates of 0.74 and 0.35 per day, respectively. A comparison of our feeding rates to literature values for zooplankton biomass suggests that algal food alone may not be sufficient to sustain zooplankton growth at those stations.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine upper (CTMax) and lower (CTMin) thermal tolerance, acclimation response ratio (ARR) and thermal tolerance polygon of the European sea bass inhabiting the Iskenderun Bay, the most southeasterly part of the Mediterranean Sea, at three acclimation temperatures (15, 20, 25 °C). Acclimation temperature significantly affected the CTMin and CTMax values of the fish. At 0.3 °C min−1 cooling or heating rate, CTMin ranged from 4.10 to 6.77 °C and CTMax ranged from 33.23 to 35.95 °C in three acclimation temperatures from 15 to 25 °C. Thermal tolerance polygon for the juveniles at the tested acclimation temperatures was calculated to be 296.14 °C2. In general, the current data show that our sea bass population possesses acclimation response ratio (ARR) values (0.25-0.27) similar to some tropical species. The cold tolerance values attained for this species ranged from 4.10 to 6.77 °C, suggesting that cold winter temperatures may not pose danger during the culture of European sea bass in deep ponds or high water exchange rate systems. Upper thermal tolerance is more of a problem in the southern part of the Mediterranean as maximum water temperature in ponds may sometimes exceed 33-34 °C, during which underground cool-water should be used to lower ambient water temperature in the mid-summer. For successful culture of sea bass in ponds, temperature should be maintained around 25 °C throughout the year and this can be managed under greenhousing systems using underground well-waters, commonly available in the region.  相似文献

During a fortnight's saturation mission with the Underwater Laboratory (UWL) Helgoland in May and June 1975, samples of the macrobenthic fauna of rocks and boulders at 15 m depth in the Lübeck Bay were collected from the same area as in October 1974, using a diver-operated suction sampler. Salinity varied from 11.1 to 15.0 S and water temperature from 7.5° C to 11.5° C. Visibility was usually about 3 to 4 m. On average, 10.449 individuals/m2 were recorded in 1975 compared to 30.474 individuals/m2 in 1974. Two species, the ascidianDendrodoa grossularia and the polychaetePolydora ciliata account for 90.8% of the total number of individuals sampled. Five species (Dendrodoa grossularia, Nereimyra punctata, Neoamphitrite figulus, Asterias rubens, Facelina drummondi) were significantly less abundant than in 1974, while two species and one group of species (Anaitides maculata, Corophium bonelli, Nemertini indet.) were more abundant in 1975. As in 1974, the angle of inclination of the substrate showed no relationship with species composition. In 1974, four motile benthic invertebrates,Nereimyra punctata, Idothea baltica, Diastylis rathkei, andFacelina drummondi were observed swarming. In 1975, onlyI. baltica was observed swarming and the individuals seemed to be less active than in 1974, perhaps related to the lower water temperatures recorded in May and June 1975 compared to those in October 1974.  相似文献

The distribution and seasonal dynamics of Centropages abdominalis and C. tenuiremis (Copepoda) in Amursky Bay (Sea of Japan) were studied from May through November 1991. C. abdominalis occurred in plankton from May through August and in November, with a peak density of more than 40000 specimens/m3 in June, at a temperature of 15–18°C. C. tenuiremis occurred from late June through November, with a maximum total density of 6900 specimens/m3 in August, at 23°C. During the observation period, the distribution of species in the bay was irregular due to the hydrological regime and sanitary conditions of water.  相似文献

Heat stroke remains a very dangerous, potentially lethal illness in humans. The Physiological Strain Index (PSI), originally based on heart rate and rectal temperature recordings in humans, describes heat strain in quantitative terms. The objective of our study was to establish whether the rectal temperature recordings serving to determine the PSI could be replaced by a non-invasive skin temperature sensor combined with a heat flux sensor (Double Sensor) attached to the inside of a helmet. We assumed (i) that the difference between the recordings by the device under test and the rectal temperature should be less than ±1.0 °C for ±2 S.D. at 10, 25, and 40 °C ambient temperature, and (ii) that the temperature predictions based on the Double Sensor temperature should differ by less than 1 PSI score from the calculations based on recordings of the rectal temperature. Twenty male subjects participated in the study. Rectal, nasopharyngeal, and skin temperatures, heat flux, and cardiovascular data were collected continuously during different experimental setups at ambient temperatures of 10, 25, and 40 °C. Depending on the protocols, the exercise intensities varied from 25% to 55% of the individual VO2max. A comparison of the recordings obtained from the device under test with those of the rectal temperature revealed that (i) the recordings of the Double Sensor differed by −0.16 to 0.1 °C from the mean rectal temperature, (ii) the concordance correlation coefficients (CCC) during all work and rest periods rose with rising ambient temperatures (all work periods: 10 °C: 0.49; 25 °C: 0.69; 40 °C: 0.75; all rest periods: 10 °C: 0.39; 25 °C: 0.81; 40 °C: 0.74), and that (iii) the Double Sensor in the helmet showed that during all rest periods and in all ambient conditions, the temperature dropped much more quickly than what was recorded when taking the rectal temperature (p<0.01). When we compared the PSI values based on the rectal temperature recordings to those determined by the Double Sensor, it was found that (i) the PSI based on the Double Sensor recordings differed by −0.27 to 0.17 from the mean PSI established by rectal temperature recordings. Furthermore, the CCC for the PSI rose during all work periods (10 °C: 0.81, 25 °C: 0.93, 40 °C: 0.87) and rest periods (10 °C: 0.68; 25 °C: 0.93; 40 °C: 0.79). In conclusion, under warm/hot environmental conditions the device under test provided a reliable method of assessing the PSI in operational environments to improve physiological situational awareness and safety in action. However, there are some limitations that reduce the device's performance in cold environments; these need to be investigated further.  相似文献

We describe the seasonal patterns and frequency distributions of meteorological and hydrographic conditions on a windward, shoaling reef flat at Punta Galeta, Panama (9° 24 N lat.), between 1974 and 1985. The factors monitored were wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, rainfall, solar radiation, water level, water temperature, and salinity. All conditions showed strong seasonal periodicity; however, the timing, duration, and amplitude of the seasonal fluctuations differed among years. The greatest variation occurred in 1981 and 1982, leading into an El Niño event. Emergence of the reef flat and extremes of water temperature were the most apparent physiological stresses; both were dependent on mean water levels. The seasonal pattern of emergence time was inversely related to mean water level. Extreme water temperatures only occurred during low water tevels, ranging between 22° to >37°C in depths <15 cm, but staying between 25°C and 30.9°C in depths <35 cm. Water temperatures averaged 1.5°C higher than air temperatures. Although rainfall was 200 to 400 cm year-1, salinity remained between 24 and 36 ppt, with more than 98% of the records 30 ppt. The relationship of water temperature to depth is consistent with the hypothesis that the physical environment becomes more stressful when a reef reaches sea level and forms a shoaling platform. The entire cycle of larval development of the spider crab Pugettia quadridens (de Haan, 1850) (Decapoda: Majidae), widespread in Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) is studied under the laboratory conditions. The development cycle of this species comprises prezoea, zoea I, zoea II, and megalopa. At a temperature of 18–20° C larval development took from 11 to 15 days. Zoea II is described in detail for the first time. Many morphological characters are found distinguishing zoea and megalopa of P. Quadridens in Russian waters from the larvae of this species in Japanese and Korean waters. Some characters of larvae are similar in P. Quadridens and the related species of the genus Pugettia. The larvae of P. Quadridens occur in the plankton of Vostok Bay from late June to late October with a density up to 5 ind/m3 at a surface water temperature of 13–21°C. They are easily distinguished from the other brachyuran larvae of this region by the absence of lateral spines on the carapace.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Biologiya Morya, Kornienko, Korn.  相似文献

Field investigations during the ice-free period of 1980 confirm that the dominant attached filamentous algae in the Canadian waters of Lake Huron are the green algae Ulothrix zonata and Cladophora glomerata, and the red alga Bangia atropurpurea. It is believed that nutrient availability limits the distribution of these algae, while temperature controls their seasonal periodicity. Because of favourable physical characteristics, the study area represents a vast potential habitat for attached filamentous algae. It is expected that eastern Georgian Bay, in particular, will suffer significant environmental degradation from the growth of Cladophora unless existing phosphorus levels are maintained indefinitely (i.e., < 0.005 mg total P 1–1). Attached filamentous algae accumulate (103 to 105 x) a variety of elements primarily in proportion to availability in the surrounding water. The occurrence of maximum algal metal concentrations at municipal waste water outfalls, river mouths and harbour areas (e.g., in µg g–1, Cr 29.0, Cu 46.4, Ni 34.0, Pb 55.0) is indicative of discrete source loadings, while elevated levels at remote sites in eastern Georgian Bay (e.g., in µg g–1, Cr 12.0–15.5, Cu 18.0, Ni 15.0–16.0, Pb 8.5–8.8) are suggestive of generalized loadings from the Canadian Shield, possibly due to the effects of acidic precipitation.  相似文献

Outwardly rectifying chloride channels in lymphocytes   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary Outwardly rectifying Cl channels in cultured human Jurkat T-lymphocytes were activated by excising a patch of membrane using the inside-out (i/o) patch-clamp configuration and holding at depolarized voltages for prolonged periods of time (1–6 min at +80 mV, 20°C). The single-channel current at +80 mV was 4.5 ± 0.3 pA and at –80 mV, it was 1.0 ± 0.4 pA. After activation, the probability of being open (P 0)for the lymphocyte channel was voltage independent. Activation of the Cl channel in lymphocytes was temperature dependent. Nineteen percent of i/o recordings from lymphocytes made at 20°C exhibited Cl channel activity. In contrast, 49% of recordings made at 30°C showed channel activity. The number of channels in an active patch was not significantly different at the two temperatures. Channel activation in excised, depolarized patches also occurred 20-fold faster at 30°C than at 20°C. There was no marked change in the single-channel conductance at 30°C. Open-channel conductance was blocked by 200 m indanyloxyacetic acid (IAA) or 1 mm SITS when applied to the intracellular side of the patch. The characteristics of this channel are similar to epithelial outwardly rectifying Cl channels thought to be involved in fluid secretion  相似文献

Patterns in the size distribution and taxonomic composition of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities for 1974 in Georgian Bay and the North Channel are described. The Diatomeae predominate the phytoplankton in both areas. Copepods, particularly Calanoida, comprise the greatest fraction of the zooplankton biomass. Normalized plankton biomass spectra for both ecosystems are typical of those found in Lake Superior and offshore Lake Huron. The plankton communities of Georgian Bay and the North Channel are thus similar to the most oligotrophic of the Laurentian Great Lakes.  相似文献

Summary The influence of ambient temperature and water supply on water metabolism and O2-consumption was measured in rock hyraxes (Procavia habessinica). With ad libitum food and water (control), water turnover rates of hyraxes were significantly lower than the general eutherian mean; water turnover rates were 61.4, 44.1 and 55.1 ml·kg–0.82·24 h–1 at 20, 27 and 35°C respectively. When greens were fed ad libitum but no drinking water was given, water turnover rate at 20°C was twofold higher, but at 27 and 35°C it was similar to that in control experiments.Water turnover rates were significantly reduced when no drinking water and only 25 g greens per day were offered (25.8, 22.0 and 29.3 ml·kg–0.82·24 h–1 at 20, 27 and 35°C respectively). Highest urine osmolality (3,200 mosm·kg–1) was recorded at 20°C.Oxygen consumption under control conditions was 43% below that predicted on the basis of body weight for most eutherian mammals. The thermoneutral zone ranged from 27 to 35°C, and the basal metabolic rate was 165 kJ·kg–0.75·h–1.  相似文献

The development of spawning in perch, pike and roach in Lake Geneva has been studied by means of artificial spawning substrates, laid at different depths, from 1984 to 1993. In Lake Geneva, perch spawned in May. A rise of surface water temperature up to 14 °C stimulated spawning activity while bad weather (surface temperature at 10 °C) induced a spread of the spawning period over more than one month. The spawning period was delayed in years when the mean width of perch egg-ribbons was the largest; this corresponded to the biggest females. At the beginning of the spawning period (early in May), perch preferentially chose a depth of 4 m to spawn. In contrast, at the end of the spawning period, maximum spawning intensity was observed at a depth of 12 m. This phenomenon was more pronounced when water temperature rose above 14 °C in the top 4 m while it remained below 12 °C at a depth of 12 m. Pike spawned at the end of April and at the beginning of May in Lake Geneva. They preferred spruce branches among the different spawning substrates that we tested in Lake Vouglans. When the water temperature increased at the surface of Lake Geneva, pike preferred to lay their eggs on substrates set at 3 m depth where the temperature was cooler than in the surface layer (10.5 °C vs 14 °C). Roach spawned during the last two weeks of May or during the first two weeks of June in Lake Geneva, depending on water temperature. Spawning had generally been spread over a week, but a sudden decrease of water temperature could slow spawning intensity. Roach were able to lay their eggs on natural or synthetic substrates, located 0.5 m below the surface near the shore as well as, at a distance of several hundred metres from the shore. The survival of eggs was always above 90% for perch and roach and generally above 70% for pike.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning site selection by spotted seatrout and black drum was studied by locating drumming aggregations through the use of a hydrophone. From March 1987 to October 1990, 315 sound observations were made to identify and characterize spawning seasons and environmental requirements of both species in the Barataria, Caminada, and eastern Timbalier Bay systems of Louisiana. The sounds produced by the spawning aggregations were identified and verified against known recordings. Spawning was verified on several occasions by capturing and rearing zygotes (eggs) into identifiable larvae. Spotted seatrout formed drumming aggregations from late May to early October at salinities ranging from 7.0 to 25.8 ppt and temperatures from 24.5 to 33.5° C. Black drum formed drumming aggregations between January and April in salinities from 10.0 to 27.0 ppt and temperatures from 15.0 to 24.0°C. Large drumming aggregations of spotted seatrout were located from 1800 to 2400h and from 1800 to 2200h for black drum. Spotted seatrout aggregation size was highly correlated with water temperature and for black drum with dissolved oxygen concentrations. Spawning sites for both species were frequently located in deep moving water between barrier islands as well as in channels in open water where water depth ranged from 3 to 50 m. Spawning site selection depended on a particular range of environmental conditions and spawning locations varied seasonally and yearly depending upon hydrological variation.Correspondence to D.M. The distribution of bdellovibrios was investigated over a wide geographical area of the Chesapeake Bay including some tributaries and subestuaries. Bdellovibrios were recovered from five aquatic habitats; water, sediment, oyster shell surface biofilm, zooplankton, and plants over a wide range of temperature and salinity measurements. Consistently, the greatest number of the predators was recovered from samples of biofilm irrespective of temperature and salinity. A decrease in the numbers and frequency of predators recovered from all habitats was observed at temperatures below 10°C. Only the shell surface biofilm samples yielded bdellovibrios 100% of the time. The organisms were recovered from 79% of water samples and 44% of sediment samples. The results reveal that bdellovibrios are surface-associated organisms and that this association appears to provide some protection for the predators at low temperatures.  相似文献

Aquatic vegetation in the relatively pristine coastal wetlands of eastern Georgian Bay provides critical habitat for a diverse fish community. Declining water levels in Lake Huron over the past decade, however, have altered the wetland plant assemblages in favour of terrestrial (emergent and meadow) taxa and have thus reduced or eliminated this important ecosystem service. In this study, we compared IKONOS satellite images for two regions of eastern Georgian Bay (acquired in 2002 and 2008) to determine significant changes in cover of four distinct wetland vegetation groups [meadow (M), emergent (E), high‐density floating (HD) and low‐density floating (LD)] over the 6 years. While LD decreased significantly (mean ?2995.4 m2), M and HD increased significantly (mean +2020.9 m2 and +2312.6 m2, respectively) between 2002 and 2008. Small patches of LD had been replaced by larger patches of HD. These results show that sustained low water levels have led to an increasingly homogeneous habitat and an overall net loss of fish habitat. A comparison of the fish communities sampled between 2003 and 2005 with those sampled in 2009 revealed that there was a significant decline in species richness. The remaining fish communities were also more homogeneous. We suggest that the observed changes in the wetland plant community due to prolonged low water levels may have resulted in significant changes in the fish communities of coastal wetlands in eastern Georgian Bay.  相似文献
