To predict spectral sensitivity, microspectrophotometry (MSP) was used to measure absorbance of photoreceptor cells from 15 species of Lake Malaŵi cichlids. Each fish had one rod and at least three cone pigments. UV‐sensitive pigments were common, but spectral sensitivity did not clearly correlate with feeding mode or habitat.  相似文献

The conspicuousness of animal signals is influenced by their contrast against the background. As such, signal conspicuousness will tend to vary in nature because habitats are composed of a mosaic of backgrounds. Variation in attractiveness could result in variation in conspecific mate choice and risk of predation, which, in turn, may create opportunities for balancing selection to maintain distinct polymorphisms. We quantified male coloration, the absorbance spectrum of visual pigments and the photic environment of Poecilia parae, a fish species with five distinct male color morphs: a drab (i.e., grey), a striped, and three colorful (i.e., blue, red and yellow) morphs. Then, using physiological models, we assessed how male color patterns can be perceived in their natural visual habitats by conspecific females and a common cichlid predator, Aequidens tetramerus. Our estimates of chromatic and luminance contrasts suggest that the three most colorful morphs were consistently the most conspicuous across all habitats. However, variation in the visual background resulted in variation in which morph was the most conspicuous to females at each locality. Likewise, the most colorful morphs were the most conspicuous morphs to cichlid predators. If females are able to discriminate between conspicuous prospective mates and those preferred males are also more vulnerable to predation, variable visual habitats could influence the direction and strength of natural and sexual selection, thereby allowing for the persistence of color polymorphisms in natural environments.  相似文献

Auxin‐deprived, senescent, suspension‐cultured pear ( Pyrus communis cv. Passe Crassane) fruit cells that can be stimulated to produce ethylene were employed in the search for a possible interdependence between DNA methylation levels and ethylene production. Neither short‐term stimulation of ethylene production by CuCl2, nor longer‐term stimulation by auxin, nor the inhibition of ethylene biosynthesis had a significant effect on the cellular level of DNA methylation. However, short‐term exposure to S‐adenosylhomocysteine enhanced cellular ethylene production and long‐term exposure to azacytidine resulted in the reduction of both DNA methylation levels and stress‐induced ethylene production. These and other correlative findings, or lack thereof, are discussed in the context of ethylene physiology, DNA methylation/demethylation, and epigenetic control.  相似文献

The parasite fauna of Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson from 10 sites across northern Australia and one site in Indonesia, was examined to evaluate the degree of movement and subsequent stock structure of the fish. Kupang fish (Indonesia) had very few Terranova spp., Grillotia branchi , Otobothrium cysticum or Pterobothrium sp. compared to Australian fish, indicating that no Australian fish enter the Kupang fishery. Univariate and discriminant function analysis of four 'temporary' parasite species, the copepod Pseudocycnoides armatus and the monogeneans Gotocotyla bivaginalis , Pricea multae and Pseudothoracocotyla ovalis , demonstrated little similarity between areas of northern Australia, indicating minimal short‐term exchange between neighbouring groups of S. commerson . Analyses of five 'permanent' parasite species, the larval helminths G. branchi , O. cysticum , Pterobothrium sp., Callitetrarhynchus gracilis and Paranybelinia balli , also revealed large differences between areas thus indicating long‐term separation. There are at least six parasitological stocks across northern Australia: Fog Bay/Bathurst Island, Cape Wessel, Groote/Sir Edward Pellew, Mornington Island, Weipa, and the Torres Strait. The occurrence of a few irregular fish in the samples suggested that up to 5% of fish moved between stocks during their lifetime. The similarity of within‐school variability to that between schools showed that the fish do not form long‐term school associations.  相似文献

The spectral sensitivity of the weakly electric mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersi was investigated under dark- and light-adapted conditions using a transient change (startle) in its electric organ discharge (EOD) rate as response measure. The startle was resistant to habituation and graded with light intensity. Under both lighting conditions, the fish responded optimally to a monochromatic light of 525 nm. A porphyropsin pigment (520–5402) appears to mediate spectral sensitivity over most of the visible spectrum. However, G. petersi responded more strongly to 625- and 675-nm lights (dark- and light-adapted fish) and a 725-nm light (light-adapted fish only) than predicted by the presence of a single rod pigment. These data suggest that at least one additional visual pigment (most likely of cone cells) maximally absorbing long wavelength light (600 nm or longer) is present. The spectral sensitivity data are consistent with the sensitivity hypothesis in that heightened sensitivity to long wavelength light is predicted for fish living in blackwater habitats which are characterized typically by low light levels and transmission of predominantly long wavelengths. Histology of the retina showed photoreceptors grouped into bundles and ensheathed by pigment epithelial cells. Our results demonstrated a functional visual sense in a species of fish much better known and studied for its electrosensory and electromotor abilities.  相似文献

Cichlid fish of the East African Rift Lakes are renowned for their diversity and offer a unique opportunity to study adaptive changes in the visual system in rapidly evolving species flocks. Since color plays a significant role in mate choice, differences in visual sensitivities could greatly influence and even drive speciation of cichlids. Lake Malawi cichlids inhabiting rock and sand habitats have significantly different cone spectral sensitivities. By combining microspectrophotometry (MSP) of isolated cones, sequencing of opsin genes, and spectral analysis of recombinant pigments, we have established the cone complements of four species of Malawi cichlids. MSP demonstrated that each of these species predominately expresses three cone pigments, although these differ between species to give three spectrally different cone complements. In addition, rare populations of spectrally distinct cones were found. In total, seven spectral classes were identified. This was confirmed by opsin gene sequencing, expression, and in vitro reconstitution. The genes represent the four major classes of cone opsin genes that diverged early in vertebrate evolution. All four species possess a long-wave-sensitive (LWS), three spectrally distinct green-sensitive (RH2), a blue-sensitive (SWS2A), a violet-sensitive (SWS2B), and an ultraviolet-sensitive (SWS1) opsin. However, African cichlids determine their spectral sensitivity by differential expression of primarily only three of the seven available cone opsin genes. European eel ( Anguilla anguilla ; Teleostei) is a valuable commercial species. However, over the past 25 years, the population of European eel has been declining to such a degree that major concerns have been raised for its long‐term conservation. Since little information is available on the life‐cycle and genetic structure of European eel, it has been difficult to evaluate the existence of any population substructuring. Molecular genetic methods contribute to a better knowledge of the demography and population structure in marine fish. In addition, management strategies and conservation goals must consider information on genetic substructuring as well as on life history patterns.
The aim of the study is to provide more detailed knowledge on the genetic variability, demography and population substructuring of European eel by analysing and comparing natural and farmed individuals. Natural eel samples have been obtained in two geographical sites (Netherlands, France) including temporal samples in a short‐scale (within years) and a long‐scale (between years). Simultaneously, farmed glass eels have been grown in two separate batches during one year. Batches have been monitored and genetic samples have been obtained during the year.
A combination of selection‐sensitive (allozymes) and selection‐neutral markers (microsatellites) has been used in the study since selection seems to play an important role in the determination of the quality of future eel spawners. Results suggest a positive correlation between growth and genetic variability since individuals attaining a large length and mass present significant higher heterozygosities.  相似文献

The existence of a species‐specific mate recognition system (MRS) enables a fluid interchange of genes within species, while promoting the evolution of barriers to hybridization across sibling species. This is because MRS's can diverge in allopatry as a consequence of random events such as drift, or because different ecological conditions impose different optima on sexually‐selected characters such as may be part of the MRS's. As freshwater habitats are frequently fragmented and re‐merged following long‐term climatic changes and river piracy across catchments, there is ample scope for fish populations' MRS's to diverge in allopatry to the point of generating pre‐mating barriers. Based on former records of population differences in sexually‐dimorphic traits in the Amarillo fish ( Girardinichthys multiradiatus ), we investigated 1) whether courtship by males is quantifiably different between populations, and 2) whether these differences are due to difference in the way females respond to specific elements of the courtship sequence (thus prompting males to court in a population‐specific style). Using five populations representing the whole of the Amarillo's geographic range, we found that, when confronted to homogametic females, males exhibited substantial and significant differences in the tendency to perform particular courtship patterns, in spite of males form all populations having equal repertoires. We also found that heterogametic courtship neither resembled that of the populations of origin of the male, nor of the female. We infer that the interpretation of the courtship signals is diverging across Amarillo populations, in a manner akin to the evolution of languages in bird songs.  相似文献

The cottoid fishes of Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia provide a unique opportunity to study the evolution of visual pigments in a group of closely related species exposed to different photic environments. Members of this species flock are adapted to different depth habitats down to >1000 m, and both the rod and cone visual pigments display short wave shifts as depth increases. The blue-sensitive cone pigments of the SWS2 class cluster into two species groups with lambda(max) values of 450 and 430 nm, with the pigment in Cottus gobio, a cottoid fish native to Britain, forming a third group with a lambda(max) of 467 nm. The sequences of the SWS2 opsin gene from C. gobio and from two representatives of the 450 and 430 nm Baikal groups are presented. Approximately 6 nm of the spectral difference between C. gobio and the 450 nm Baikal group can be ascribed to the presence of a porphyropsin/rhodopin mixture in C. gobio. Subsequent analysis of amino acid substitutions by site-directed mutagenesis demonstrates that the remainder of the shift from 461 to 450 nm arises from a Thr269Ala substitution and the shift from 450 to 430 nm at least partly from Thr118Ala and Thr118Gly substitutions. The underlying adaptive significance of these substitutions in terms of spectral tuning and signal-to-noise ratio is discussed.  相似文献

Vertebrate color vision is best developed in fish, reptiles, and birds with four distinct cone receptor visual pigments. These pigments, providing sensitivity from ultraviolet to infrared light, are thought to have been present in ancestral vertebrates. When placental mammals adopted nocturnality, they lost two visual pigments, reducing them to dichromacy; primates subsequently reevolved trichromacy. Studies of mammalian color vision have largely overlooked marsupials despite the wide variety of species and ecological niches and, most importantly, their retention of reptilian retinal features such as oil droplets and double cones. Using microspectrophotometry (MSP), we have investigated the spectral sensitivity of the photoreceptors of two Australian marsupials, the crepuscular, nectivorous honey possum (Tarsipes rostratus) and the arhythmic, insectivorous fat-tailed dunnart (Sminthopsis crassicaudata); these species are representatives of the two major taxonomic divisions of marsupials, the diprotodonts and polyprotodonts, respectively. Here, we report the presence of three spectrally distinct cone photoreceptor types in both species. It is the first evidence for the basis of trichromatic color vision in mammals other than primates. We suggest that Australian marsupials have retained an ancestral visual pigment that has been lost from placental mammals.  相似文献

The early marine migration of 55 Atlantic salmon post‐smolts tagged with acoustic transmitters was automatically monitored using 13 to 25 km long arrays of receivers deployed inside the Bay of Fundy, a coastal system on the east coast of Canada. The survival of post‐smolts from groups with short‐ and long‐term transmitters in coastal habitat up to 10 km from the river was 92 to 100%, indicating a successful transition to salt water and departure. Migration for 68 to 77% of post‐smolts followed a direct route and it was rapid (transit time usually <12 h). Post‐smolts initially migrated in a south to south‐west direction ( i.e . orientation towards the mouth of the bay) and they were aggregated near the coast. Post‐smolts with long‐term transmitters were monitored 20 km from the river where they continued to be aggregated, moving near the coast through a 'common corridor', and their survival to that point was at least 84%. Post‐smolts from both groups travelled heading out of the coastal system during ebb tides. Flood tides interrupted migration, and they caused changes in travel direction and delays in departure for post‐smolts not leaving by a direct route. Monitoring of coastal habitat inside the Bay of Fundy intercepted 62% of migrating post‐smolts with long‐term transmitters returning after an initial absence of 2 to 22 days. Returning post‐smolts displayed a resident behaviour, using the habitat monitored inside the Bay of Fundy during July and August.  相似文献

The retinal visual pigments of 52 species of deep-sea fish were measured by partial bleaching of detergent extracts. The retinae of 45 species contained only a single rhodopsin with maximum absorbance (λmax) at a wavelength between 474 and 490 nm, matching both the region of highest intensity downwelling sunlight and the maximum emission of most deep-sea bioluminescence. Seven species were shown to have more than one visual pigment within their retinae and these had λmax values that generally fell outside the usual range. One of these, Bonapartia pedaliota , was particularly interesting as, unlike most such multipigment species, it had one rhodopsin and one porphyropsin pigment, apparently based on different opsins. Rosylip sculpin Ascelichthys rhodorus spawned in the intertidal during the winter in the north‐eastern Pacific. Large numbers of males typically congregated at spawning sites, where females deposited clutches. The mating system of this species was external fertilization and group spawning at specific oviposition sites under boulders in the intertidal, and no alternative male mating strategies. Males were abundant at sites while oviposition was occurring, and most abandoned the sites as spawning tapered off seasonally despite the presence of developing clutches. Experimental removal of males from sites suggested that males provided some short‐term benefits to clutches, with catastrophic loss of clutches significantly lower when males were present. The large number of males at an oviposition site and histological evidence indicating high sperm production and storage of sperm prior to release suggest a high level of sperm competition in this species. This spawning pattern appears to differ in substantial ways from any other reported fish mating system.  相似文献

Variation in respiratory traits was quantified between two populations of the sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna (one from a periodically hypoxic salt marsh, Cedar Key, and one from a chronically normoxic river site, Santa Fe River). Two suites of characters were selected: traits that may show both short‐term acclimation response and interdemic variation in acclimation response (metabolic rate, critical oxygen tension and respiratory behaviour), and those that are not likely to respond to short‐term acclimation but may vary among populations (gill morphometric characters). Sailfin mollies from the salt marsh, acclimated to hypoxia (1 mg l−1, c . 20 mmHg) for 6 weeks, spent less time conducting aquatic surface respiration and had lower gill ventilation rates than hypoxia‐acclimated conspecifics from the well‐oxygenated river site. Poecilia latipinna acclimated to hypoxia exhibited a lower critical oxygen tension ( P c) than fish acclimated to normoxia; however, there was also a significant population effect. Poecilia latipinna from Cedar Key exhibited a lower P c than fish from the Santa Fe River, regardless of acclimation. Cedar Key fish had a 14% higher mean gill surface area relative to fish from the Santa Fe River, a character that could account, at least in part, for their greater tolerance to hypoxia.  相似文献

Pigment breakdown mediated by activated oxygen species is a consequence and a general symptom of oxidative stress and injury to plants. We have attempted to estimate the patterns of pigment bleaching and follow pigment susceptibility to irradiation as related to the process of senescence/ripening. Light‐induced pigment breakdown was studied in situ in the leaves of a shade‐requiring plant, wax flower ( Hoya carnosa R. Br.), as well as in apple ( Malus domestica Borlh. cv. Zhigulevskoe) and lemon ( Citrus limon Burm. cv. Pavlovsky) fruits, using reflectance spectroscopy. It was found that the sensitivity of plant pigments to photobleaching increases as ripening progresses in lemon fruit. Kinetic analysis showed that in all systems a rapid breakdown of the pigment occurs after a lag‐phase. The signature analysis revealed a common pattern of chlorophyll and carotenoid changes, but degradation of the individual pigments was found to be inhomogeneous. Both in lemon and apple fruits a decrease in reflectance in the band of carotenoid absorption preceded pigment photodestruction. In the fruits, the bulk of chlorophyll b and the long‐wavelength chlorophyll a forms were degraded at early stages of the process whereas the breakdown of both chlorophylls in H. carnosa leaves was more synchronous. Prolonged irradiation induced bleaching of the main chlorophyll a band with maximum at 678 nm in the difference spectra, as well as carotenoids. Some features of reflectance spectra in the bands of chlorophyll and carotenoid absorption were found to be suitable for the differentiation of photo‐induced pigment breakdown from the transformation of the pigments taking place during senescence.  相似文献

Summary This study reports photopic spectral sensitivity curves (351–709 nm) for four individual roach,Rutilus rutilus, determined by two choice appetitive training. All four curves show four sensitivity maxima at 361–398 nm, 421–448 nm, 501–544 nm and 634–666 nm which are related to the four known roach photopic visual pigments (Avery et al. 1982). The overall shape of the curves at long wavelengths indicates inhibitory interactions between the red and green cone mechanisms. That the high behavioural sensitivity in the UV is caused by a specific ultraviolet visual pigment and is not due to aberrant stimulation of the other cone types is shown by the redetermination of spectral sensitivity at short wavelengths (351–501 nm) following the selective bleaching of the three longer wavelength visual pigments. This depresses the blue sensitivity to a greater degree than the relatively unaffected UV sensitivity maximum. Spectral transmission data from two corneas and four lenses show that they transmit considerable amounts of light in the near UV.  相似文献

This study evaluated whether the African cyprinid Barbus neumayeri from Rwembaita Swamp (low‐oxygen) and Njuguta River (high‐oxygen) in the Kibale National Park, Uganda differed in traits related to aerobic and anaerobic metabolic potential. Haematocrit was measured as an index of blood oxygen‐carrying capacity, and tissue activities and isozyme composition of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured as indices of tissue anaerobic capacity. To address whether site‐dependent differences were acute responses v . longer‐term adjustments to environmental conditions, these variables were measured in fish sampled shortly after collection and after laboratory maintenance under well‐aerated conditions. In fish sampled in the field, those from the low‐oxygen site had significantly higher haematocrit, but this difference disappeared after long‐term laboratory maintenance. In contrast, fish from the low‐oxygen site had higher liver LDH activities than fish from the high‐oxygen site, and this difference persisted during laboratory maintenance. Polymorphism was detected at both the LDH‐A and LDH‐B loci, and genotype frequencies for LDH‐B differed significantly between collection sites. These results demonstrate physiological, biochemical and genetic differences in B. neumayeri from habitats differing in dissolved oxygen availability and suggest both acute and long‐term responses to local environmental conditions.  相似文献

The present study examined the effects of competition on male courtship in the Pacific blue‐eye Pseudomugil signifer , a species of fish where females have previously been shown to use courtship, but not male fighting prowess, as an important mate choice cue. Courtship bouts directed to a stimulus female were shortest when two males were allowed to freely interact (contact treatment) and longest when there was only one male (non‐interaction). Courtship length in trials where one of two males was confined to a clear cylinder (visual) was intermediate between the other two treatments. Courtship in visual and contact treatments was constantly disrupted. The percentage of interrupted courtships was higher for the contact compared to visual treatment where aggressive interactions were also longer in duration and took place more frequently. Within contact trials, dominant males courted longer than subordinates despite both males experiencing comparable rates of courtship disruption. These results suggest that male‐male competition can have important implications for adaptive female choice particularly in circumstances where the benefits being sought by females are unrelated to male fighting ability.  相似文献

Background  

Color vision plays a critical role in visual behavior. An animal's capacity for color vision rests on the presence of differentially sensitive cone photoreceptors. Spectral sensitivity is a measure of the visual responsiveness of these cones at different light wavelengths. Four classes of cone pigments have been identified in vertebrates, but in teleost fishes, opsin genes have undergone gene duplication events and thus can produce a larger number of spectrally distinct cone pigments. In this study, we examine the question of large-scale variation in color vision with respect to individual, sex and species that may result from differential expression of cone pigments. Cichlid fishes are an excellent model system for examining variation in spectral sensitivity because they have seven distinct cone opsin genes that are differentially expressed.  相似文献

The visual pigments in the retinal photoreceptors of 12 species of snappers of the genus Lutjanus (Teleostei; Perciformes; Lutjanidae) were measured by microspectrophotometry. All the species were caught on the Great Barrier Reef (Australia) but differ in the colour of the water in which they live. Some live in the clear blue water of the outer reef, some in the greener water of the middle and inshore reefs and some in the more heavily stained mangrove and estuarine water. All the species had double cones, each member of the pair containing a different visual pigment. Using Baker's and Smith's (1982) model to predict the spectral distribution of ambient light from chlorophyll and dissolved organic matter it was found that the absorption spectra of the visual pigments in the double cones were close to those that confer the maximum sensitivity in the different water types. Single cones contained a blue or violet-sensitive visual pigment.
