Feeding rates of mixed shoals of juvenile roach and chub were observed in a shallow stream near Cambridge (UK). Roach at the front of the shoal had significantly higher feeding rates than roach at the back and than chub in either front or back positions. Position in the shoal also had a significant effect on the kind of food consumed, with front roach feeding more on plankton and back roach more on bottom food. Altogether 36 fish from the stream were caught and marked. Half of these were deprived of food and the other half well-fed for 3 days in captivity. After release 36% of them joined their old shoal again. Individuals from the starved group occupied front positions significantly more often than well-fed fish, but after 2 days this difference disappeared. 相似文献

Scavenging may be a regular feeding behavior for some facultative raptor species occupying low quality habitats and/or with little experience in hunting techniques. However, its importance has been largely underestimated due to methodological limitations in identifying the real proportion in the diet. Here, through direct observations, we assessed the hunting and foraging success of the threatened Spanish imperial eagle Aquila adalberti determining the influence of age, sex, breeding status, habitat quality, prey type, and landscape characteristics. From 465 observations, Spanish imperial eagles used hunting in flight (42%), scavenging (30%), hunting from a perch (16%) and kleptoparasitism (12%). Our model suggests that Prey size and Prey type best explain hunting success, followed by Landscape and Sex. Our findings suggest that Spanish imperial eagles increase hunting success with age, with scavenging and kleptoparasitism regularly used as juveniles. The absence of relationships with any of the variables considered suggests that kleptoparasitism is an opportunistic behavior used sporadically. Scavenging is also independent of habitat quality and landscape characteristics. Accordingly, low prey density is not a driver of carrion use for preadult individuals, suggesting that a lack of hunting ability obliges this age‐class to use this alternative feeding technique regularly. As a result, the threatened Spanish imperial eagle population is also prone to mortality related to the illegal use of poison baits and, potentially, veterinary drugs (i.e., diclofenac). 相似文献

Many field measurements of viability and sexual selection on body size indicate that large size is favoured. However, life-history theory predicts that body size may be optimized and that patterns of selection may often be stabilizing rather than directional. One reason for this discrepancy may be that field estimates of selection tend to focus on limited components of fitness and may not fully measure life-history trade-offs. We use an 8-year, demographic field study to examine both sexual selection and lifetime selection on body size of a coral reef fish (the bicolour damselfish, Stegastes partitus). Selection via reproductive success of adults was very strong (standardized selection differential=1.04). However, this effect was balanced by trade-offs between large adult size and reduced cumulative survival during the juvenile phase. When we measured lifetime fitness (net reproductive rate), selection was strongly stabilizing and only weakly directional, consistent with predictions from life-history theory. 相似文献

In the trade-off between food and safety, the role of aggressiveintraspecific interactions has not been extensively examined. Here I present information on this system using a kleptoparasiticspider, Argyrodts antipodiana, and its host spider and potentialpredator, Eriophora pustulosa. A. antipodiana can feed eitherat a potentially dangerous site (the hub of its host's web withthe host), or at a relatively safe site (on food bundles aroundthe edge of the host's web). I found that A. antipodiana cangain food very quickly when feeding with the host, apparentlyby exploiting the host's ability to digest the prey. Thus A.antipodiana follows predictions based on foraging models inthat it accepts a higher predation risk at the hub because ofthe higher food payoff. A. antipodiana also aggressively competesfor access to more food. However, aggressive competition increasesthe predation risk from the host, especially at tile hub wherethe host is very close. Consequently, A. antipodiana modifiesits level of intraspecific aggressiveness in accordance withits position on the web: at the hub, where the cost of aggressionis high (due to predation risk), A. antipodiana reduces itsaggressiveness, but it is aggressive away from the hub whencompeting for food bundles. The ability of A. antipodiana tochange interaction intensity as a function of its position onthe web enables it to exploit a rich, but risky, food sourceand provides a new angle for examining food and safety tradeoffs in light of intraspecific competition for food 相似文献

A common objective in field studies of positional behavior is to establish functional links between locomotion, body size, habitat use, foraging strategies, and maintenance activities. In contrast, there has been relatively little effort to examine posture in a similar, comparative context. Although various studies have shown that particular postures are employed in specific contexts, the theory which could provide the basis for understanding posture on a more general level has not been explicitly stated. This is particularly true for primates lacking specializations such as prehensile tails, claws for clinging, or adaptations for forelimb suspension. Consequently, there are few a priori reasons for predicting postural differences among generalized arboreal quadrupeds. Six sympatric cercopithecid monkeys were studied for 14 months in the Ivory Coast's Tai Forest to determine if more general relationships do exist between posture and other aspects of behavior. The results demonstrate that the postural diversity with these primates can, to varying degrees, be understood within the context of differences in the spatial distribution of preferred food items, activity patterns, support use, and foraging strategies. Because cannibals are potentially both predator and prey, the presence of conspecifics and alternative prey may act together
to influence the rate at which cannibals prey upon each other or emigrate from a habitat patch. Wolf spiders (Lycosidae) are
cannibalistic-generalist predators that hunt for prey with a sit-and-wait strategy characterized by changes in foraging site.
Little information is available on how both prey abundance and the presence of conspecifics influence patch quality for these
cursorial, non-web-building spiders. To address this question, laboratory experiments were conducted with spiderlings and
older juveniles of the lycosid genus Schizocosa. The presence of insect prey consistently reduced rates of spider emigration when spiders were housed either alone or in
groups. Solitary juvenile Schizocosa that had been recently collected from the field exhibited a median giving-up time (GUT) of 10 h in the absence of prey (Collembola);
providing Collembola increased the median GUT to 64 h. For solitary spiders, the absence of prey increased by about fourfold
the rate of emigration during the first 24 h. In contrast, for spiders in patches with a high density of conspecifics, the
absence of prey increased the 24-h emigration rate by only 1.6-fold. For successful cannibals in the no-prey patches, the
presence of conspecifics improved patch quality by providing a source of food. Mortality by cannibalism was affected by both
prey availability and openness of the patch to net emigration. In patches with no net emigration, the presence of prey reduced
rates of cannibalism from 79% to 57%. Spiders in patches open to emigration but not immigration experienced a rate of cannibalism
(16%) that was independent of prey availability. The results of these experiments indicate that for a cannibalistic forager
such as the wolf spider Schizocosa, (1) the presence of conspecifics can improve average patch quality when prey are absent, and (2) cannibalism has the potential
to be a significant mortality factor under natural field conditions because cannibalism persisted in prey patches that were
open to emigration.

The identification of interspecific links (trophic niche) is important to characterize resource use of a predator, and to know its trophic role (for example, mesopredator or top predator) in the food web. In this study, we examined: a) the trophic ecology of Scomberomorus sierra as a predator (niche breadth, trophic overlap, and trophic position) and b) its presence as a prey in the diets of the region´s top predators, to evaluate the critical link of S. sierra as a probable mesopredator in the food web of the southeastern Gulf of California (GC). Based on %PSIRI, the dominant diet of S. sierra were engraulids and cephalopods. The diet was similar between sexes and among size-classes. However, the isotopic niche breadth values and δ15N variance (>1) reflect a broad niche for young adults likely related to a) changes in morphology (e.g., size of the mouth), b) development of the visual system, and c) changes in the energy requirements of the species reproductive stages. Seasonal changes in prey species’ availability and abundance resulted in isotopic variations, indicating that S. sierra is an opportunistic predator. A wide range in trophic position value (from 3.8 to 4.2) indicated that it also is an intermediary carnivore, with a high degree of trophic plasticity. Although S. sierra has not a dominant role in top predators’ diets, they share some prey species such as anchovies and other fish, depending on predator size. Therefore, S. sierra is a species with many prey-predator relationships in the southeastern GC food webs that may be considered a critical trophic link. This information is crucial for an ecosystem-based fisheries management in the Gulf of California. 相似文献

Previously, we reported that α1,6-fucosyltransferase (Fut8)-deficient (Fut8(-/-)) mice exhibit emphysema-like changes in the lung and severe growth retardation due to dysregulation of TGF-β1 and EGF receptors and to abnormal integrin activation, respectively. To study the role of α1,6-fucosylation in brain tissue where Fut8 is highly expressed, we examined Fut8(-/-) mice using a combination of neurological and behavioral tests. Fut8(-/-) mice exhibited multiple behavioral abnormalities consistent with a schizophrenia-like phenotype. Fut8(-/-) mice displayed increased locomotion compared with wild-type (Fut8(+/+)) and heterozygous (Fut8(+/-)) mice. In particular, Fut8(-/-) mice showed strenuous hopping behavior in a novel environment. Working memory performance was impaired in Fut8(-/-) mice as evidenced by the Y-maze tests. Furthermore, Fut8(-/-) mice showed prepulse inhibition (PPI) deficiency. Intriguingly, although there was no significant difference between Fut8(+/+) and Fut8(+/-) mice in the PPI test under normal conditions, Fut8(+/-) mice showed impaired PPI after exposure to a restraint stress. This result suggests that reduced expression of Fut8 is a plausible cause of schizophrenia and related disorders. The levels of serotonin metabolites were significantly decreased in both the striatum and nucleus accumbens of the Fut8(-/-) mice. Likewise, treatment with haloperidol, which is an antipsychotic drug that antagonizes dopaminergic and serotonergic receptors, significantly reduced hopping behaviors. The present study is the first to clearly demonstrate that α1,6-fucosylation plays an important role in the brain, and that it might be related to schizophrenia-like behaviors. Thus, the results of the present study provide new insights into the underlying mechanisms responsible for schizophrenia and related disorders. 相似文献

Microhabitat preferences of four parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) of house fly pupae were measured in a two-dimensional arena containing perpendicular light and moisture gradients. Parasitism by Muscidifurax raptorand Nasonia vitripenniswas greatest in dry substrates, with the latter preferring bright illumination and the former tending to prefer dark. Urolepis rufipesselected bright illumination and moist substrates, attacking the most hosts at bright-moist and dim-moist microhabitats. Spalangia cameroniexhibited no main-effect preference for light intensity or moisture, although parasitism was highest at dim-moist, dark-wet, and dark-moist microhabitats. These results demonstrate that simple abiotic attributes, such as light intensity and substrate moisture concentration, are important in defining some dimensions of the niches of these parasitoids. 相似文献

In species where females gain a nutritious nuptial gift during mating, the balance between benefits and costs of mating may depend on access to food. This means that there is not one optimal number of matings for the female but a range of optimal mating numbers. With increasing food availability, the optimal number of matings for a female should vary from the number necessary only for fertilization of her eggs to the number needed also for producing these eggs. In three experimental series, the average number of matings for females of the nuptial gift‐giving spider Pisaura mirabilis before egg sac construction varied from 2 to 16 with food‐limited females generally accepting more matings than well‐fed females. Minimal level of optimal mating number for females at satiation feeding conditions was predicted to be 2–3; in an experimental test, the median number was 2 (range 0–4). Multiple mating gave benefits in terms of increased fecundity and increased egg hatching success up to the third mating, and it had costs in terms of reduced fecundity, reduced egg hatching success after the third mating, and lower offspring size. The level of polyandry seems to vary with the female optimum, regulated by a satiation‐dependent resistance to mating, potentially leaving satiated females in lifelong virginity. 相似文献

Large planktonic Cladocera are typically the most important components of the diet of underyearling roach. Selection for large species and individuals by fish can result in a shift in the species composition of the cladoceran community as well as a reduction in the mean size of the individuals of large species and in the assemblage as a whole. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that underyearlings feeding on Daphnia hyalina smaller than 1 mm in length has a significantly lower intake of prey volume per unit time than when feeding on prey greater than 1.5 mm. A decrease in the nutritional quality of zooplankton prey, brought about by increasing predation pressure is suggested as the mechanism for density-dependent reductions in the growth of underyearling roach in eutrophic water bodies. 相似文献
