Synopsis We examined the short-term effects of the natural catastrophic collapse of a beaver dam on downstream benthic insect density and fish community structure in a headwater tributary of the Mississippi River. The catastrophic collapse of the dam and ensuing flash flood resulted in a dramatic (< 90%) decrease in benthic insect density in riffle and pool habitats. Sixty days after collapse of the dam, insect densities in riffles were 62% of pre-collapse densities. Insect recolonization of pools was slower than for riffles; 60 days after collapse of the dam insect densities in pools were 8% of pre-collapse levels. Collapse of the beaver dam altered the structure of the downstream fish community by causing a short-term (2–4 days) influx of pond species, resulting in a brief increase in species richness and abundance. Fish species richness and abundance then decreased for 4–60 days to levels below those prior to the collapse.  相似文献

Light and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to quality diatom colonization in Oak Creek, Arizona. Aluminum SEM stubs with and without plexiglass discs were anchored into rocks. Early colonization on five stub microzones was examined at hourly intervals; weekly intervals of up to 3 wk were employed to record community development in pool find riffle. Plexiglass was more suitable for microbial colonization than aluminum. Organic matter and bacteria were important surface pre-conditioning agents while fungi were instrumental in trap/ting cells during early stages of colonization in the riffle. Diatom colonization was initialed within 1 h on the upstream side of substrata in riffles, while the tap face was colonized first in pools. Colonization moved rapidly to the perimeter in each system. Early colonization of-side microzones was considerably more asymmetric in the riffle than, pool. At Idler stages (2 wk) diatoms with their associated mucilage and algal filaments contributed to the stability of the microbial communities. Horizontally positioned species (Achnanthes, Cocconeis) were early colonizers in both systems while vertically positioned species (Gomphonema, Nitzschia) were more important in later successional stages (3 wk) in the riffle. Horizontally positioned species remained dominant throughout the 3 wk period in the pool. After 3 wk, diversity was normally greater in the pool while density was higher in the riffle. Detrital microcosms containing viable microbiol assemblages frequently collected on tin-upstream face of substrata in the riffle. The random nature by which these detrital microcoms contact downstream substrata greatly contribute to the spatial variation of periphyton in streams. These detrital microcosms expedite repeated colonization in lotic systems.  相似文献

Periphyton constitutes an important community that is useful for assessment of ecological conditions in lotic systems. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of different mixtures of Cd and Pb on periphyton growth as well as Cd and Pb mixtures toxicity to diatom assemblages in laboratory mesocosm experiments. A natural periphyton community sampled from the Monjolinho River (South of Brazil) was inoculated into five experimental systems containing clean glass substrates for periphyton colonization. The communities were exposed to mixtures of dissolved Cd and Pb concentrations of 0.01 and 0.1 mg l−1 Cd and 0.033 and 0.1 mg l−1 Pb. Periphyton ash-free dry weight, growth rate, diatom cell density and diatom community composition were analyzed on samples collected after 1, 2 and 3 weeks of colonization. High Cd concentration (0.1 mg l−1) has negative effects on periphyton growth while high concentration of Pb (0.1 mg l−1) decreased the toxic effects of Cd on periphyton growth. Shifts in species composition (development of more resistant species like Achnanthidium minutissimum and reduction of sensitive ones like Cymbopleura naviculiformis, Fragilaria capucina, Navicula cryptocephala, Encyonema silesiacum, Eunotia bilunaris, and Gomphonema parvulum), decreases in species diversity of diatom communities with increasing Cd and Pb concentrations and exposure duration have been demonstrated in this study making diatom communities appropriate monitors of metal mixtures in aquatic systems.  相似文献

Periphyton development was studied on microscopic glass slides and leaves of Zostera noltii Hornem. in an intertidal area in the Banc d'Arguin (Mauritania). The effects of shading, tidal depth and grazing activities by the fiddler crab Uca tangeri Eydoux were evaluated. For all experiments, periphyton ash content was high (52–93%) and ash-free dry weight ranged between 0.10–0.63 mg cm–2. Slides accumulated more periphyton than leaves.Artificial shading (62–99%) for 13 days had no effect on periphyton densities on leaves. Increased tidal depth resulted in higher ash-free dry weight on slides, but in lower ash-free dry weight on leaves. Significant variation along the coastline also existed. The effect of fiddler crabs was studied using exclosures. Presence of fiddler crabs reduced periphyton density on slides, whereas light transmittance was increased. On leaves, no significant fiddler crab effect was found. This difference between leaves and slides was probably caused by a storm at the day before the end of the experiment, and by the higher periphyton density on slides as compared with leaves. As visual inspection during the experiment showed clear differences in appearance of leaves inside and outside the exclosures, the storm probably sloughed off mainly the older leaves, i.e. those on which the differences in periphyton cover were the highest. It is hypothesized that periphyton accumulation is higher with increased tidal depth, whereas fiddler crab grazing pressure also increases in this direction. The result is a decreased periphyton density with increased tidal depth. The presently found light extinction coefficients (mean 0.8 m–1) and periphyton light attenuance (up to 25%) in Banc d'Arguin are not likely to affect seagrass leaf growth.  相似文献

We examined the larval population densities and biomass of a caddisfly grazer, Micrasema quadriloba, and the abundance and community structures of periphyton at a segment scale (7.4 km with four study sites), along a second-to fourth-order Japanese mountain stream throughout the grazer’s life cycle. In the uppermost riffle of the study segment (site 1), periphyton abundance was kept at low levels when the larvae occurred. The larval distribution spread downstream as larvae developed from first instars in May to fifth instars in January. We performed multiple regression analyses to test the effects of environmental variables and larval biomass on periphyton abundance in both the riffle of site 1 and the study segment; the results revealed that the larval biomass was significantly negatively correlated with periphyton abundance similarly in both the riffle and the study segment. In addition, both the correlation and community analyses showed that the larval biomass was significantly negatively correlated to the relative abundance of large and/or filamentous microalgae, which appeared in the uppermost layer of the periphyton mat, and that larval biomass was significantly positively correlated to the relative abundance of small diatoms, which strongly adhered to the substrate. Thus, the present study implied that the grazing of M. quadriloba larvae would regulate the abundance of periphyton in a riffle and also regulate the abundance and community structure of periphyton at the segment scale with the expansion of their longitudinal distribution.  相似文献

The effects of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the development of a periphyton community were studied in an outdoor artificial stream apparatus. Algal biomass, species composition, and bacterial cell density were measured under full sunlight and non-UVR (photosynthetically active radiation [PAR]-only) conditions. Attachment of algae was detected on days 6–9. Although the chlorophyll-a concentration under non-UVR conditions was 2–4 times that under full sunlight (PAR + UVR) throughout the experiment, neither net algal growth rate nor species composition differed significantly between the two light conditions. The relative carotenoid pigment contents of attached algae in the PAR + UVR condition were 1.1–1.3 times those in the non-UVR condition. Rates of increase of bacterial cell densities under the PAR + UVR condition were depressed by solar UVR for the first few days, although there were no apparent differences in the rates of increase between the light conditions later in the experiment. The small effect of UVR on the development of this periphyton community may be attributable to low UV flux at this study site and to the experimental conditions under which the algae were kept: a high physiological state with high nutrient conditions. Attached bacteria and algae that colonize substrata first are likely to be sensitive to solar UVR, and the negative effects of UVR are mitigated by the development of a periphyton community.  相似文献

A characteristic of aquatic systems in karstic region is the formation of tufa – the product of calcium carbonate precipitation. Artificial substrata (glass slides) were used to investigate the influence of tufa deposits at two different current velocities (5 cm s–1 and 50 cm s–1) on the ciliate assemblages in periphyton. After two-month exposure periods, periphyton biomass and tufa deposit were c. three times greater at 50 cm s–1 than at 5 cm s–1. Ciliate population density was also higher on artificial substrata exposed in a lotic than in a lentic microhabitat (the overall mean number of ciliates at 5 cm s–1 was 122 ind. cm–2, and at 50 cm s–1 497 ind. cm–2). At each of the two observed current velocities, a Principal Components (PCA) ordination of the colonized ciliate associations showed a spatial separation of the associations that developed under two different conditions of tufa deposition. During the period of greater tufa deposit, associated with greater periphyton overgrowth rate, the ciliate communities had higher species diversity (a higher number of species and a lower number of individuals). Species diversity of ciliates had a positive nonlinear relation to tufa deposition rate. These results suggest that artificial surfaces covered by a rough tufa layer associated with greater periphyton biomass offer diverse conditions for colonization by ciliates.  相似文献

The potential of periphyton for phosphorus removal from lakes has been investigated using a novel method involving polypropylene (PP) substrate carriers submerged in the pelagial. The study area Lake 'Fühlinger See' in Cologne (Germany) is a complex of mesoeutrophic gravel pit lakes. The whole site is intensively used as a recreation area. Visitors are thought to be the most important single contributors to lake eutrophication. Carriers were exposed at different depths (2, 3.5, 5 m), for different time intervals (1–8 months) and from March to November PP-sheets were readily colonised by periphyton and a biofilm consisting mainly of benthic diatoms developed. Seasonal variability of periphyton on substrates was observed since filamentous green algae colonised the artificial substrates mainly between July and November. Chlorophyll a content of periphyton on the PP-fleece was up to 240-fold higher than chlorophyll a concentrations in the same volume in the epilimnion. Up to around 100 mg of total phosphorus per m2 PP-fleece was bound and can be eliminated from the lake by removal of the substrate carriers together with the periphyton after four months of exposure. Though large-scale validations are needed, this method may be applicable as a technique to harvest phosphorus from the water column in larger-scale settings.  相似文献

Herbivory and intraspecific competition in a stream caddisfly population   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary Field experiments were conducted to assess the effects of different population densities of the herbivorous caddisfly Helicopsyche borealis on periphyton biomass and on its own growth rate in Big Sulphur Creek, a third-order stream in northern California, USA. Stream enclosures were used to vary grazer density from one-eighth to twice natural density (1/8X–2X) in two experiments (35 d and 60 d), which spanned the period of most rapid larval growth. Periphyton biomass and chlorophyll a were inversely related to grazer density. Grazer densities of 1/8X–1/2X moderately reduced periphyton when compared to an ungrazed control, whereas densities of 1X–2X greatly depleted periphyton. The growth rate of H. borealis larvae declined with increasing larval density. Growth rate was highest at densities of 1/8X–1/2X; larvae grew more slowly at 1X and showed no growth at 2X. Weekly supplementation of periphyton to 1/4X, 1X, and 2X densities significantly increased the final body mass of larvae at 1X and 2X (by 26% and 50%, respectively, compared to unsupplemented larvae) but did not change the body mass of larvae at 1/4X. These results suggest that periphyton is a limiting resource in Big Sulphur Creek and that H. borealis larvae compete exploitatively for that resource. Intraspecific competition may be an important, but often overlooked, feature of many herbivore populations in streams.  相似文献

Over a six month period, littoral periphyton communities on vertically oriented glass slides were quantitatively sampled from four stations in Elk Lake, British Columbia. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were employed to assess the temporal interrelationships between 15 environmental variables, concurrently measured, and the periphyton populations, expressed as total cell counts and species diversity, for the complete data set of each station. At all stations there was a statistically significant increase in total cell populations with increasing length of slide exposure; positive correlations also occurred with pH, temperature, nitrite, nitrate and copper, while negative ones occurred with oxygen, orthophosphate and hardness (magnesium and total). At all but one station there was a significant decrease in species diversity with increasing slide exposure duration, a decrease attributed to the simultaneous increase in standing crop resulting in intensified competition for diminishing substrate area suitable for cell colonization. Multiple stepwise regression analyses demonstrated that greater than 80% of the variation in periphyton total cells at all four stations could be reliably predicted or described in terms of length of slide exposure, phosphate (ortho and total), and hardness (calcium and total). On the other hand, exposure duration and total cell populations were the most important variables associated with changes in species diversity at three of the four stations. In general, correlations and regressions between standing crop and environmental variables were more statistically reliable and consistent between stations than comparable analyses with species diversity. Use of multiple regression and correlation disclosed the importance of small, non statistically significant variation in ecologically relevant variables and permitted objective comparison of stations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the primary production rates of phytolithic communities found in the major different habitats of streams and determine the effects of physical and chemical parameters associated with each habitat on periphyton community spatial structure. The project was designed to study natural, intact communities within stream systems.A comparative analysis was made of phytolithic communities found in Camel Hump and Husky Branch streams in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Camel Hump flows through virgin forest area and Husky Branch flows through an area logged approximately 60 y ago. The effects of logging on Husky Branch stream and the surrounding watershed are discussed.Seasonal data were collected from July, 1981 through May, 1982 from fast flow, slow flow and pool areas within each stream. An incubation chamber designed for use in lotic systems was used for in situ measurements of 14C uptake. Rock samples collected at each site were used as substrates for community structure observations utilizing a scanning electron microscope. The algal communities of Camel Hump and Husky Branch streams were found to be predominantly composed of diatoms. The dominant genera in the fast, slow and pool areas included Achnanthes, Eunotia, Meridion, Navicula and Gomphonema. Fast flow areas were dominated by diatom species growing in a prostrate position. Slow flow areas were more densely populated by diatoms than the fast flow areas. Diatoms in the slow flow areas appeared mainly in prostrate position with a few stalked forms present. Pool area communities were less densely packed than slow flow areas and contained stalked and chain formations of diatoms. Results indicate that the physical and chemical parameters associated with each habitat affect the primary production rates and community structure found at the experimental sites. Measurements of carbon assimilation and chlorophyll a concentration were significantly greater in habitats of higher current velocity and light availability. Cell densities tend to increase with a decrease in current velocity. Habitats of high density showed a decrease in diversity and evenness. Correlations between productivity in the various habitats of each stream and other parameters measured in the study are discussed.  相似文献

A study of communities of attached algae in Lake Mize Florida, wax made during July 1969, July-August 1970 and April 1971. The substrates exposed during the study included glass slides mid the terrestrial form of the amphibious sedge, Eleocharis baldwinii (Torr.) Chapman. Counts were used to determine the relative abundance and densities of the species present on the 2 substrates under different environmental conditions. Such analyses indicated that at any given lime and place, a number of factors influenced the composition of the periphyton. Generally, lightly adhering, resupinate species attained higher densities on glass slides than filamentous and loosely associated metaphytonic species. The epiphytic flora of E. baldwinii contained a large number of both strong attachers and the metaphyton. The vertical range of many attached species was also greater on E. baldwinii than on glass slides.  相似文献

Fishes were sampled in riffle and pool habitats at 74 upland localities in the Little River system, southeastern Oklahoma and southwestern Arkansas, U.S.A. I asked how these two habitat-defined communities differed with regard to species abundance and incidence patterns, and how these differences varied along othree environmental gradients: elevation, stream gradient, and stream size. Riffle and pool communities showed distinct and significant differences when ordinated in multivariate space defined by species abundance patterns. Sites with similar pool communities did not have similar riffle communities, and riffle and pool communities responded to environmental gradients in different ways. Elevation was the best predictor of pool community structure, whereas stream size was the best predictor of riffle communities. Overall, riffle habitats had fewer species than pool habitats and formed significant subsets of pool communities at 12 of 74 sites. I predicted that at small stream localities where riffles were unstable, riffle species would form subsets of the pool species communities, and both community types should show high similarities. The presence of faunal subsets was not associated with stream size, but faunal similarities were significantly higher at small stream localities. At the species level, 14 species were significantly associated with pool habitats, while only two were associated with riffle habitats. Riffle and pool communities, although linked by a continuous habitat gradient at the local scale, responded differently to large-scale environmental gradients. Local differences between these communities were predictable based on stream size.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine which of the following artificial stream designs would be most logistically simple yet effective in maintaining riffle insects during a 30 d bioassay: 1) static and no current (S-NC); 2) flow-through and no current (FT-NC); 3) static with current (S-C); or 4) flow-through with current (FT-C). Flow-through and current, when provided, were 12 ml min–1 and 30 cm sec–1, respectively. Streams were covered by emergence traps, and daylight equivalent lights provided a natural photoperiod. The four stream designs were evaluated in triplicate based on changes in insect species-abundances after 30 d. Test organisms were transferred to the artificial streams in rock-filled containers previously colonized for 30 d in a third-order mountain stream riffle. Additional colonized substrates were sampled immediately to provide an estimate of initial densities placed in the artificial streams. Hess samples were taken directly from the source riffle to evaluate how well the artificial substrates reflected species-abundances on the natural substrate. Adults were collected from the artificial streams every 48–72 h to determine the percentage of initial densities that emerged. After 30 d (7 Aug–6 Sept, 1986), all organisms remaining in the streams were censused. Designs were evaluated using combined densities of adults and young.Relative to benthic samples taken directly from the source riffle, the artificial substrates selected for collector-filterers and against collector-gatherers. The FT-C and S-C stream designs maintained most taxa at or above initial densities, and even in the FT-NC and S-NC streams densities of some taxa were not significantly different (P 0.05) from initial densities. Emergent adults comprised a large proportion of mayfly and chironomid densities and must be monitored during bioassays with aquatic insects. These results indicate that microcosms of riffle insect communities can be maintained for at least 30 d with moderate current and minimal flow-through.  相似文献

Historically described as cosmopolitan but rare, the benthic diatom Didymosphenia geminata is now considered a nuisance, bloom-forming and invasive species. In New Zealand, D. geminata was first recorded in 2004 in the lower Waiau River. By winter 2008 it had been identified in 26 major catchments. To investigate invasion success of D. geminata in relation to succession and biomass accumulation of native periphyton communities, we conducted a two-factorial field experiment. Seven successional stages of a native periphyton community (substrate exposure time: 0–49 days) were exposed to two D. geminata propagule concentrations (low and high) for 25 days. D. geminata propagule concentration and successional stage of the native periphyton community significantly affected the invasion success of D. geminata. While D. geminata invasion was low on all substrates that had been exposed to the low D. geminata propagule concentration, there was a unimodal relationship between invasion success and substrate exposure time at the high propagule concentration. D. geminata abundance was low on uncolonised substrates, increased when the native communities were 1- or 2-week-old, and low when the age of the native communities was 4 or more weeks. These results imply that D. geminata is a late successional species that needs some existing structure to anchor to a substrate. Although late successional stages of the native periphyton community displayed partial resistance to D. geminata invasion, trying to keep D. geminata abundances as low as possible appears to be the only way to manage this species at this time.  相似文献

This research proposes a simplified method for estimating the mesohabitat composition that would favour members of a given set of aquatic species. The simulated composition of four types of mesohabitat units (deep pool, shallow pool, deep riffle and shallow riffle) could guide the design of in‐stream structures in creating pool‐riffle systems with ecological reference. Fish community data and an autecology matrix are used to support the development of a stream mesohabitat simulation based on regression models for reaches in mid to upper‐order streams. The fish community‐mesohabitat model results constitute a reference condition that can be used to guide stream restoration and ecological engineering decisions aimed at maintaining the natural ecological integrity and diversity of rivers.  相似文献

Protozoan communities in chalk streams   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
This study assessed the individual effects of three mayflies (Paraleptophlebia sp., Ephemerella subvaria McDunnough and Epeorus sp.) and one caddisfly (Psilotreta sp.) on periphyton communities associated with clay tiles and leaves. Algal densities were estimated for leaf discs and tiles from experimental chambers (with individual grazers) and control chambers (i.e., no grazers). Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of leaf discs and tiles also were taken for all mayfly grazing experiments. Densities of algae on leaf discs were two to five times lower than on tiles. Mouthpart morphology influenced how different insects grazed the periphyton community. Paraleptophlebia had typical collector-gatherer mouthparts and had no effect on diatom densities associated with leaves whereas diatom densities on grazed tiles were higher than densities on tiles from control chambers. Epeorus had brusher mouthparts and had little impact on diatom densities regardless of substratum type. The other two grazers had the blade-like mandibles of a scraper. Psilotreta did not reduce the numerical abundance of diatoms on either substratum, but did alter community structure by significantly reducing densities of stalked Gomphonema olivaceum and large species of Navicula and Nitzschia; densities of smaller diatoms (Achnanthes spp) increased. However, E. subvaria reduced densities of most algal species regardless of size on both substrata and also significantly altered community structure. SEMs of substrata grazed by mayflies showed reductions in fungal hyphae on all grazed leaf discs, decreases in filamentous algal forms on grazed tiles, and greatly shortened stalks of G. olivaceum (Paraleptophlebia only). Thus, periphyton communities are different on leaves versus tiles and grazers with different mouthpart morphologies have varying effects on both algal and heterotrophic microbial community structure.  相似文献

During the period March–May 1991, sediment samples were taken every two or three days at one intertidal station in the brackish part of the Westerschelde estuary. Quantitative cell counts were made in order to investigate the short-term temporal changes in diatom numbers and assemblage structure.Throughout the whole sampling period, the diatom assemblage was dominated by epipsammic diatoms. Three species, Achnanthes delicatula, Opephora cf. perminuta and Catenula adhaerens on average accounted for almost 67% of all valves counted. The epipsammic diatom fraction showed no significant changes in absolute numbers; its species composition appeared relatively stable. In contrast, epipelic diatom densities significantly increased towards the end of the study period. Species composition within this fraction was less stable. Multivariate analysis (Principal Components Analysis), in combination with multiple regression, indicated that total sky irradiance (on the second and third day preceding sampling) and percentage organic matter were related to the short-term fluctuations of the epipelic diatom fraction.  相似文献

Adverse weather and resultant turbulence caused sloughing of attached diatom communities during the first two weeks of colonization on artificial substrates. In contrast to Pacific macroalgal systems, older communities (8–12 d) were the most affected by wave action. Ash-free dry weight of the periphyton and diatom cell density generally increased, except following periods of high turbulence when losses of up to 80% occurred. The maximum cell density (4 × 105 diatoms · cm?2) and ash-free dry weight (2.9 mg · cm?2) are among the highest reported for similar conditions. Percent transmittance through the growth layer correlated significantly with cell density and ash-free dry weight and is recommended as a rapid method for measuring the relative accumulation of periphyton. Diatom diversity generally increased throughout the study period and did not clearly reflect the effects of disturbance as did standing crop. Comparisons of diatom diversity and community composition indicated that the three overlapping growth series were not significantly different and samples collected on the same date were not more similar than those of identical age. Combined with previous evidence, the present study indicates that the first two weeks of substrate exposure in the summer represented a colonization phase followed by rapid microsuccession.  相似文献

Lakes and their topological distribution across Earth's surface impose ecological and evolutionary constraints on aquatic metacommunities. In this study, we group similar lake ecosystems as metacommunity units influencing diatom community structure. We assembled a database of 195 lakes from the tropical Andes and adjacent lowlands (8°N–30°S and 58–79°W) with associated environmental predictors to examine diatom metacommunity patterns at two different levels: taxon and functional (deconstructed species matrix by ecological guilds). We also derived spatial variables that inherently assessed the relative role of dispersal. Using complementary multivariate statistical techniques (principal component analysis, cluster analysis, nonmetric multidimensional scaling, Procrustes, variance partitioning), we examined diatom–environment relationships among different lake habitats (sediment surface, periphyton, and plankton) and partitioned community variation to evaluate the influence of niche‐ and dispersal‐based assembly processes in diatom metacommunity structure across lake clusters. The results showed a significant association between geographic clusters of lakes based on gradients of climate and landscape configuration and diatom assemblages. Six lake clusters distributed along a latitudinal gradient were identified as functional metacommunity units for diatom communities. Variance partitioning revealed that dispersal mechanisms were a major contributor to diatom metacommunity structure, but in a highly context‐dependent fashion across lake clusters. In the Andean Altiplano and adjacent lowlands of Bolivia, diatom metacommunities are niche assembled but constrained by either dispersal limitation or mass effects, resulting from area, environmental heterogeneity, and ecological guild relationships. Topographic heterogeneity played an important role in structuring planktic diatom metacommunities. We emphasize the value of a guild‐based metacommunity model linked to dispersal for elucidating mechanisms underlying latitudinal gradients in distribution. Our findings reveal the importance of shifts in ecological drivers across climatic and physiographically distinct lake clusters, providing a basis for comparison of broad‐scale community gradients in lake‐rich regions elsewhere. This may help guide future research to explore evolutionary constraints on the rich Neotropical benthic diatom species pool.  相似文献
