The prominent endogenous cycle of the sun, with a period of approximately 11 years, is correlated with human conceptions. Time series methods (periodograms and periodic regression analyses) established that an approximate 11-year period exists in the data on births in the 20th century (1909–1985) in the United States and in New Zealand. Statistical comparisons indicated a reliable and direct relationship of conceptions with the approximately 11-year sunspot cycle. These findings were discussed in terms of the possible mediating role of geomagnetic disturbances and other factors that have been suggested in the literature to mediate human conception.  相似文献

Abstract

The annual pattern of black and white births in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States was analyzed for the years 1969 thru 1976. Monthly means for the eight‐year period were obtained individually for 17 states and for black births in the District of Columbia. The states and the district were selected for their large black populations and represent approximately 70% of black births in the USA. The data were analyzed in two ways, with an analysis of variance (the two‐factor mixed design with repeated measures on one factor) and by comparing the confidence intervals for the least‐squares derived Fourier coefficients of a sine curve. In addition, the range was compared between regions and between races and related to latitude. The analyses of variance indicated that statistically significant differences existed between regions and between races. The cosinor‐like method failed to adequately represent the data in most cases. The completely urban black population in the District of Columbia exhibited an annual pattern that was similar to the pattern in neighboring states, states that contained large rural populations. The range in the monthly averages of births was different between regions and between races, and inversely correlated with latitude (with “North”; and “white”; having smaller ranges). Some possible causative factors are briefly reviewed, and the correlation of sperm counts and conceptions offered as a new possibility.  相似文献

Twenty-two years of monthly values of birth data for the USA, 1967 through 1988, were analyzed by visual inspection. The data were transformed to remove the influence of length of month and of linear trend, and the values were lagged 9 months to approximate the time of conception. Then, 11-year monthly averages were obtained and plotted as standard scores. Thus two 11-year sets of data were independently analyzed, providing the opportunity of replication. Four distinct temporal patterns were found, differing in month of occurrence of the initial trough and peak and the relative sizes of the two troughs; these characteristics of the temporal pattern change systematically with latitude in the eastern and midwestern states. Data from two other continents, the United Kingdom and Australia, also were analyzed using the same method and found to exhibit a temporal pattern during the year similar to the northern states of the USA. Two biologically relevant variables, temperature and photoperiod, were considered as possible controllers and regulators of the annual rhythmicity. Comparisons of the trends in conceptions with these environmental variables, and inspections of the temperatures and photoperiods at which peaks and troughs in conceptions were found, indicated that these environmental variables could not account for the annual rhythmicity in conceptions.  相似文献

The annual numbers of human births were analyzed with regard to an 11-year cycle. The annual values were obtained from seven different regions: Australia, Germany, England and Wales, New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, and the USA. Fifty-five annual values were obtained from each region for the years 1930 to 1984, comprising approximately five sunspot cycles. For each region the annual values were formed into 5 by 11 matrices; the eleven column means obtained were standardized, and plotted. A periodic regression technique, utilizing the fitting functions of the Fourier series, was used to evaluate the temporal order in the column means. Eleven-year rhythms were found and compared with solar and geophysical variables. Correlations were found with sunspots and solar flares, with terrestrial measures of magnetic disturbances (the magnetic indices derived from the K-index), and with temperature. The correlation of conceptions with the 11-year solar cycle may be a potential guide in the selection of further variables for the control and regulation of the rhythms in human conceptions.  相似文献

Abstract

Our previous studies indicated that temperature and photoperiod were not involved as temporal variables in effecting the annual changes in human conceptions in the USA. However, temperature still receives attention in the current literature as the important variable in determining the temporal pattern of conceptions. Therefore, we present here a replication of our previous study, involving two additional 11‐year cycles of birth data in the USA, from the interval 1945 thru 1966. The data are transformed to remove linear trends, to remove over‐all mean differences, and to remove differences in amplitude. The data are then clustered into the regional groups determined by the previous study. The replication was obtained when these groups exhibited similar patterns within a 11‐year period and among 11‐year periods. The data from four 11‐year intervals are presented, representing more than 100 million Caucasian births in the USA from 1945 thru 1988. The subtle changes with time are described, and a comparison with a southern hemisphere pattern indicates, along with the other data, that temperature is irrelevant in effecting the annual pattern of changes in conceptions.  相似文献

Abstract

Violent crimes committed during two to three consecutive years in sixteen different locations in the United States were examined for annual rhythms using the cosinor method of analysis. Annual changes in rapes and in the more numerous aggravated assaults were highly significant in the majority of locations. They were closely related to each other in time and showed maxima generally between July and August. The data suggest that rape may comprise a subpopulation of assaultive behavior. In contrast, there were seasonal rhythms for robbery in only five locations with maxima between November and December. There was a virtual absence of any seasonal changes in murder. A close statistical association was established between annual assault and rape rhythms and annual temperature fluctuations in the different locations. This finding suggested that certain aspects of human violence may be influenced by exteroceptive factors.  相似文献

The pineal hormone melatonin serves as a signal of day length in the regulation of annual rhythms of physiological functions and behavior. The duration of high melatonin levels in body fluids is proportional to the duration of the dark period of the day. Due to the direct suppression of melatonin by light, the overt melatonin rhythm may differ from the endogenous rhythm driven by the hypothalamic circadian clock. The aim of this study was to find out possible differences between the overt and endogenous melatonin rhythms in goats during the course of a year. Seven Finnish landrace goats (nonlactating females) were kept under artificial lighting that approximately simulated the annual changes of day length at 60 degrees N. Blood samples for melatonin measurements by radioimmunoassay were collected at 2-h intervals during six seasons: winter (light:dark 6:18 h), early spring (10:14), late spring (14:10), summer (18:6), early fall (14:10), and late fall (10:14). Melatonin profiles were determined for 2 consecutive days, first in light-dark (LD) conditions and then in continuous darkness (DD). In LD conditions, the profiles matched the dark period with one exception: In winter, the mean peak duration was significantly shorter than the scotoperiod. In DD conditions, two types of endogenous melatonin patterns were found: a "winter pattern" (peak duration 13-15 h) in winter, early spring, early fall, and late fall, and a "summer pattern" (duration about 11 h) in late spring and summer. Thus, in equal habitual LD conditions in late spring and early fall (LD 14:10), the endogenous melatonin rhythms were not quite similar: The pattern in late spring resembled that in summer, and the pattern in early fall that in winter. These results suggest that, in addition to the light-adjusted overt melatonin rhythm, the endogenous rhythm of melatonin secretion varies during the course of a year.  相似文献

Abstract

U.S. vital registration data on live births and data on abortions and ectopic pregnancies from a national hospital discharge survey were used to examine the seasonality of conceptions and the influence the conception pattern has on the monthly incidence of abortions and ectopic pregnancies. We found that in the United States conceptions follow a consistent seasonal pattern with the peak in November and December. However, when the pattern for conceptions is controlled, the monthly variation for abortions and ectopic pregnancies is not significant. Therefore, we find no monthly excess for any of these outcomes of pregnancy over that expected as a consequence of the seasonality of conception. We suggest the monthly variation for the number of each of these pregnancy outcomes will best be explained when the seasonal variation in conceptions is understood.  相似文献

Mammalian circadian organization is believed to derive primarily from circadian oscillators within the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). The SCN drives circadian rhythms of a wide array of functions (e.g., locomotion, body temperature, and several endocrine processes, including the circadian secretion of the pineal hormone melatonin). In contrast to the situation in several species of reptiles and birds, there is an extensive literature reporting little or no effect of pinealectomy on mammalian circadian rhythms. However, recent research has indicated that the SCN and circadian systems of several mammalian species are highly sensitive to exogenous melatonin, raising the possibility that endogenous pineal hormone may provide feedback in the control of overt circadian rhythms. To determine the role of the pineal gland in rat circadian rhythms, the effects of pinealectomy on locomotor rhythms in constant light (LL) and constant darkness (DD) were studied. The results indicated that the circadian rhythms of pinealectomized rats but not sham-operated controls dissociated into multiple ultradian components in LL and recoupled into circadian patterns only after 12-21 days in DD. The data suggest that pineal feedback may modulate sensitivity to light and/or provide coupling among multiple circadian oscillators within the SCN.  相似文献

Melatonin is the time-keeping molecule of the organism. The production by the pineal organ is responsible for the diurnal and annual rhythms of plasma melatonin content. This contributes to synchronizing behavioural, biochemical and physiological processes to the environmental variations in photoperiod and temperature. Conservation and diversity characterize the melatonin system in vertebrates: conservation because its nocturnal pattern of production as well as its synchronizing properties are a constant; diversity because the modalities of its biosynthesis and modes of action have been profoundly modified in the course of evolution. This review summarizes our current knowledge on the targets and modes of action of melatonin in fish and comparisons are made with mammals.  相似文献

Cancer patients may exhibit normal or altered circadian rhythms in tumor and healthy tissues. Four rhythms known to reflect circadian clock function were studied in 18 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and good performance status. Rest-activity was monitored by wrist actigraphy for 72 h before treatment, and its circadian rhythm was estimated by an autocorrelation coefficient at 24h and a dichotomy index that compared the activity level when in and out of bed. Blood samples (9-11 time points, 3-6 h apart) were drawn on day 1 and day 4 of the first course of chronochemotherapy (5-fluorouracil: 800 mg/m2/day; folinic acid: 300 mg/m2/day; oxaliplatin: 25 mg/m2/day). Group 24h rhythms were validated statistically for plasma concentrations of melatonin, 6-alpha-sulfatoxymelatonin, and cortisol and for lymphocyte counts. Significant individual 24h rhythms were displayed in melatonin by 15 patients, cortisol by seven patients, lymphocytes by five patients, and prominent circadian rhythms in activity were displayed by 10 patients; only one patient exhibited significant rhythms in all the variables. The results suggest the rhythms of melatonin, cortisol, lymphocytes, and rest/activity reflect different components of the circadian system, which may be altered differently during cancer processes. Although many species display endogenous circannual rhythms of biological activity that are synchronized by day length, the specific photoperiodic requirements for synchronizing such rhythms are not established for any species. We tested the hypothesis that the circannual reproductive rhythm of sheep can be synchronized by exposure to just one or two discrete blocks of photoperiodic information each year. Ewes were pinealectomized to prevent their ability to transduce photoperiodic information into altered reproductive neuroendocrine activity. During the 53/4 yr following pinealectomy, specific photoperiodic signals were restored for discrete periods of time via replacement of 24-h patterns of melatonin, the pineal hormone that transmits photic information to the reproductive neuroendocrine axis. The ewes were kept in a 12-mo photoycycle that alternated between short (8L:16D) and long (16L:8D) days every 6 mo and that was 6 mo out of phase with the geophysical year. Pineal-intact control ewes exhibited synchronous annual reproductive cycles. Noninfused pinealectomized control ewes did not exhibit synchronous cycles. Pinealectomized ewes infused with alternating 70-day blocks of short- and long-day patterns of melatonin every 6 mo for the first 21/2 yr of the experiment exhibited synchronous annual reproductive cycles that were 6 mo out of phase with those of ewes maintained outdoors. This synchrony persisted when the frequency of the melatonin treatment was reduced to just one 70-day block of a long-day pattern of melatonin each 365 days. Cycle period was 368 +/- 3 days; standard deviation of the date of onset of reproductive induction averaged only 3 days. Our study provides the first direct evidence that a single block of photoperiodic information a year can synchronize a circannual rhythm.  相似文献

Avian behavior and physiology are temporally regulated by a complex circadian clock on both a daily and an annual basis. The circadian secretion of the hormone melatonin is a critical component of the regulation of circadian/daily processes in passerine birds, but there is little evidence that the gland regulates annual changes in primary reproductive function. Here it is shown that locomotor rhythms of house sparrows, Passer domesticus, which are made arrhythmic by either pinealectomy or maintenance in constant light, can be synchronized by daily administration of melatonin of different durations to simulate the melatonin profiles indicative of long and short photoperiods. Pinealectomized male sparrows maintained in constant darkness were entrained by both melatonin regimens. In both cases, testes were regressed and the song control nuclei were small. Intact male house sparrows maintained in constant light were also entrained to both melatonin regimens. However, sparrows that received a long duration melatonin cycle exhibited small song control nuclei, while sparrows that received short duration melatonin or no melatonin at all exhibited large song control nuclei. The data indicate that seasonal changes in melatonin duration contribute to the regulation of song control nuclei.  相似文献

Exposure to extremely-low-frequency (ELF) electric or magnetic fields has been postulated as a potentially contributing factor in depression. Epidemiologic studies have yielded positive correlations between magnetic- and/or electric-field strengths in local environments and the incidence of depression-related suicide. Chronic exposure to ELF electric or magnetic fields can disrupt normal circadian rhythms in rat pineal serotonin-N-acetyltransferase activity as well as in serotonin and melatonin concentrations. Such disruptions in the circadian rhythmicity of pineal melatonin secretion have been associated with certain depressive disorders in human beings. In the rat, ELF fields may interfere with tonic aspects of neuronal input to the pineal gland, giving rise to what may be termed "functional pinealectomy." If long-term exposure to ELF fields causes pineal dysfunction in human beings as it does in the rat, such dysfunction may contribute to the onset of depression or may exacerbate existing depressive disorders.  相似文献

Recent research in our laboratory has indicated that in sparrows the visual suprachiasmatic nucleus (vSCN) is metabolically rhythmic such that 2-deoxy[14C]glucose (2DG) uptake and specific binding of 2[125I]iodomelatonin (IMEL) are high during subjective day for up to 10 circadian cycles in constant darkness (DD). These rhythms damp to arrhythmicity in pinealectomized birds (PINX). The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that exogenous melatonin rhythmically applied can restore disrupted behavioral and cerebral rhythmicity. Pinealectomized house sparrows were placed in constant dim light and allowed to become arrhythmic. Experimental birds received 0.86 mM melatonin in 0.01% ethanol (ETOH) to drink for 12 of every 24 h for 14 days. Control birds received 0.01% ETOH only. Behavioral rhythmicity was restored by melatonin but not by ETOH. Birds were injected with 2DG 6 or 18 h following the beginning of melatonin (for experimental birds: MT06 and MT18 respectively) or ETOH (for control birds: ET06 and ET18 respectively) administration, allowed to survive 1 h and killed for 2DG and IMEL autoradiography. The data indicated 2DG rhythmicity such that uptake was high at MT18 in vSCN and several visual, auditory and limbic system structures in birds receiving melatonin but not in birds receiving ETOH. Similarly, IMEL binding rhythms were restored in vSCN and other visual, auditory and limbic system structures in birds receiving melatonin but not in those receiving ETOH. These data indicate that melatonin cycles are responsible for generating and/or driving a wide array of cerebral metabolic rhythms and that this influence is inhibitory.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that retinal melatonin plays an important role in the regulation of retinal daily and circadian rhythms. Melatonin exerts its influence by binding to G-protein coupled receptors named melatonin receptor type 1 and type 2 and both receptors are present in the mouse retina. Earlier studies have shown that clock genes are rhythmically expressed in the mouse retina and melatonin signaling may be implicated in the modulation of clock gene expression in this tissue. In this study we determined the daily and circadian expression patterns of Per1, Per2, Bmal1, Dbp, Nampt and c-fos in the retina and in the photoreceptor layer (using laser capture microdissection) in C3H-f+/+ and in melatonin receptors of knockout (MT1 and MT2) of the same genetic background using real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Our data indicated that clock and clock-controlled genes are rhythmically expressed in the retina and in the photoreceptor layer. Removal of melatonin signaling significantly affected the pattern of expression in the retina whereas in the photoreceptor layer only the Bmal1 circadian pattern of expression was affected by melatonin signaling removal. In conclusion, our data further support the notion that melatonin signaling may be important for the regulation of clock gene expression in the inner or ganglion cells layer, but not in photoreceptors.  相似文献

Summary The aim of this study was to describe the regular annual pattern of the daily melatonin synthesis in Djungarian hamsters,Phodopus sungorus sungorus. The hamsters were maintained from birth in natural photoperiodic conditions and in bimonthly intervals the day/night rhythms of pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) were measured. Analysis of the circadian profiles of NAT activity showed that the duration of elevated melatonin synthesis closely reflects the duration of the scotophase throughout the seasons. Thus the duration of elevated melatonin seems to represent a direct humoral signal transmitting the photoperiodic message. The duration of the nightly melatonin pulse appears to be influenced mainly by the time of dawn rather than by the time of dusk.
