The digging apparatus of pocket gophers offers a unique opportunity to examine morphological constraints within a historical context because relationships among extant taxa are well resolved and the features enhancing digging performance are relatively well understood. Structural and functional considerations suggest that the muscles associated with tooth- and claw-digging in pocket gophers are subjected to contrasting levels of morphological constraints. To assess this hypothesis, we analysed the bones and muscles of the jaws and forelimbs in four genera comprising five species of pocket gophers. Morphometric analyses were performed on 12 osteological measurements selected to reflect overall skull size, variation in rostral shape and procumbency, differences in overall length of the forelimbs and processes relating to the function of lever systems used in claw-digging. In addition, dissections were made of the jaw, hyoid, neck and all of the forelimb muscles excluding the intrinsic muscles of the manus. Results of our morphometric analyses corroborate the recent suggestion that pocket gophers encompass a wide range of morphological variation extending from claw-diggers to tooth-diggers. Myologically, however, we found structural variation only in the forelimb muscles, some of which may be advantageous for digging. No changes in jaw, neck and hyoid muscles, other than differences in muscle mass or those concordant with differences in rostral shape, were noted. These results support our hypothesis that constrasting levels of morphological constraint exist between the jaw and forelimb muscles of pocket gophers. We present a discussion of the structural and functional constraints on jaws and forelimbs in gophers as well as an analysis of historical constraints acting on this group, and perhaps on mammals in general.  相似文献

Chromosome studies on the Javan warty pig (Sus verrucosus), the Sulawesi warty pig (S. celebensis) and a subspecies of the wild boar, S. scrofa vittatus, have revealed diploid chromosome numbers of 38. The morphology and C-band size of chromosome 10 are different in S. verrucosus and the two other species. Both S. verrucosus and S. celebensis have a Y chromosome that is larger than the Y chromosome of domestic and wild S. scrofa, and is submetacentric rather than metacentric. There are differences between all three species in the G-banding pattern of the long arm of the Y chromosome. The presence of 2n=38 chromosomes in the Javan warty pig and the Sulawesi warty pig provides new strong evidence that the basic chromosome number in the genus Sus is 38. The differences in karyotype between these pigs (chromosome 10 and the Y chromosome) confirm that they are separate species.  相似文献

The present study compares the forefoot and hindfoot musculature of five representative species of Cavioidea rodents. In all species, the musculature of both forefeet and hindfeet have the same array regardless of the absence of digit I in the manus of Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris and Cavia porcellus. Our results suggest a tendency in these species towards a three-digit system, with a functional loss of digit V and a predominance of digit III in their forefeet. In the same way, the muscular reduction of digit I in the other rodents analyzed indicates a four-digit system with predominance of digit II in Myoprocta acouchy and Dasyprocta leporina and of digit V in Agouti paca. There seems to be an association between the muscular arrangement and functional axis of the foot, raising the general question why this axis runs between the third and forth digit, or along the third digit.  相似文献

The otic region in the skull of archeocetes and odontocetes is compared and interpreted with special emphasis on the morphology and suspension of the ear bones. In archeocetes, the periotic was obviously separate from the mastoid but still integrated within the skull via a long anterior and posterior process. The rotation of the cochlear part of the periotic was already obvious. The tympanic bone was attached to a decreasing number of neighboring elements, with the periotic becoming more and more important in the later archeocetes. The accessory air sacs of the tympanic cavity had invaded some of the adjacent skeletal elements and attained a moderate-to-remarkable extension. In the evolution of the odontocetes, the periotic and tympanic were successively uncoupled from the skull and combined to a new morphological and functional unit (tympanoperiotic complex). This uncoupling was mainly achieved by shortening the periotical processes and simultaneously extending the tympanic air sacs. For functional reasons, however, the periotic (posterior process) stayed in immediate contact with the mastoid, the latter remaining in the lateral wall of skull. In advanced marine dolphins, the bony sheaths of the accessory air sacs are largely reduced, presumably because of volume fluctuations in the tympanic cavity during diving. The perfect uncoupling of the ear bones from the skull obviously was an essential prerequisite for directional hearing, for effective ultrasound orientation and communication, and finally, for the striking development of the dolphin brain.  相似文献

Cartesian transformation, applied as a landmark morphometric method, is used to investigate some of the evolutionary shape changes leading to the skulls of the modern rhinoceroses. The early Oligocene genusSubhyracodon serves as the primitive shape from which the extant genera (Dicerorhinus, Rhinocerso, Diceros, andCeratotherium) have been transformed. Coordinate data for 21 landmarks, defined in lateral view, are analyzed by the computer program Thinplate Splines. Each of the four transformations are interpreted separately as shape change fromSubhyracodon. Computed results forRhinoceros are also compared with previous results obtained by visual interpretation (the classic method). Among the extant genera,Ceratotherium andRhinoceros have the most derived shapes and are opposites with respect to orientation of the occiput and relative size of the mandible angle. The significance of these foci of change is discussed in terms of the functions of the masseter and posterior temporalis muscles. In head positions associated with feeding on short vs. tall grasses, the two skull shapes are consistent with a role for these muscles in support of a large mandible against gravity. The results are presented of a comparative study of certain features of the cranial osteology of Hyaena hyaena (Brisson) and Crocuta crocuta (Erxleben), of the atlas and axis vertebrae and of the associated cranial and nuchal musculature. Observable osteological differences between the two forms are shown to be correlated with the degree of development of particular muscles and thus with the functional activity of the jaws in the seizing and carrying of prey. Secondary sexual characters are more pronounced in the male than in the female of either form.  相似文献

A purification scheme for aldose reductase (alditol: NADP+ 1-oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.1.21) developed using bovine lens tissue including an affinity chromatographic step is presented which is particularly suited for small quantities of lenses. Using the affinity chromatographic method as a key step also makes it possible to obtain preparations of rat lens aldose reductase which are homogeneous. The behavior of crude preparations of aldose reductase from human lens on both ion-exchange and affinity chromatography was similar to the chromatographic behavior of the enzyme from rat and bovine lens. Comparative studies of aldose reductase obtained from the lenses of the three species demonstrate the similarity of the enzymes. These comparisons were based on molecular weights, isoelectric points, chromatographic behavior and kinetic data. Homotropic cooperativity for both NADPH and glyceraldehyde, as evidenced by a downward curvature in the Lineweaver-Burk double-reciprocal plots, had been demonstrated for aldose reductase obtained from bovine lens (Sheaff, C.M. and Doughty, C.C. (1976) J. Biol. Chem. 251, 2696-2702). Similarly, cooperativity was observed with the enzyme from both rat and human lenses and the apparent Km values at both high and low concentrations of substrate are comparable for the lens aldose reductases from all three species for both substrates.  相似文献

Variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used together with comparative cytogenetics to examine the evolutionary history and taxonomic status of an African hystricomorphous rodent, the springhare Pedetes capensis. The mtDNA phylogeographic structure showed that the majority of the southern African populations (P. c. capensis) are characterized by unique but closely related maternal lineages. Based on restriction endonuclease fragment analysis, the east African populations (P. c. surdaster) appear more structured and are distinguished from those in southern Africa by an average sequence divergence of 5.52% (±1.4%). This marked divergence is concordant with results of the cytogenetic study. Specimens from southern Africa have 2n = 38, and those from east Africa 2n = 40. The change in diploid number is due to a single centric fusion. It is suggested that the closure of the Brachystegia or miombo woodland (20,000–10,000 B.P.), which delimits contemporary springhare ranges, may have been too recent to account for the accumulated genetic differences that distinguish these taxa. While rifting and associated habitat changes in east Africa can be invoked to explain genetic structure in this region, the southern African springhare populations, which have a high incidence of locality-specific haplotypes, show a shallow phylogeographic structure, in keeping with a relatively recent range expansion from smaller source populations. Given the magnitude of genetic, morphological, and ethological differences between the two geographic isolates, we believe that there is strong support for the elevation of the east African and southern African springhare populations to full species status, thus supporting earlier taxonomic treatments of this rodent.  相似文献

We have localized desmin in the quail ovary, by the unlabelled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique, using two monoclonal and one polyclonal antisera. Special attention has been paid to the influence of fixation and of proteolytic pretreatment of sections. It appeared that the immunostaining of desmin largely depends on the nature of the fixative. Carnoy fluid, Bouin's fixative, and a paraformaldehyde-acetic acid fixative preserved the histological structure very efficiently. However, trypsin pretreatment proved to be necessary to unmask the antigenic sites in the ovaries fixed in Bouin's fixative and the paraformaldehyde-acetic acid fixative. Desmin immunoreactivity was detected in the tunica albuginea and the chordae, a number of which surrounding the blood vessels, from the hilus to the thecal surface of the follicles. Small branches of chordae connected them with the tunica albuginea, forming a suspensory apparatus. Desmin was also localized in the smooth-muscle cells of the blood vessels. In the theca, immunoreactivity was detected in the wall of arterioles, of venules, and of capillaries. Further experimental and immunohistochemical research have to be performed to establish if the suspensory apparatus is a myoid tissue.  相似文献

The work describes the anatomical structure of the cerebellum of the caspian seal (Pusa caspica Gmelin) and Greenland seal (Pagophoca groenlandica Erxleben). The shape of the cerebellum, the disposition of the main lobes and convolutions are characterized. The schemes of three projections of the cerebellum of both species are presented. The figures of the cerebellum size, its absolute and relative weight and the surface of the cerebellum and its portions in seals have been obtained. The well-developmed flocculo-nodular portions and paraflocculuses and relatively poorly developed lobulus paramedianus are pointed to be one of the characteristic features of the structure of the seal cerebellum. An attempt is made to explain great dimensions of the flocculo-nodullar portion and paraflocculuses by specific features of the seal locomotion in water.  相似文献

The speciation of several insulin-mimetic/enhancing VO(IV) and Zn(II) complexes in human blood serum was studied and a comparison was made concerning the ability of the serum components to interact with the original metal complexes and the distribution of the metal ions between the low and the high molecular fractions of the serum. It was found that the low molecular mass components may play a larger role in transporting Zn(II) than in the case with VO(IV). Among the high molecular mass serum proteins, transferrin is the primary binder of VO(IV), and albumin is that of Zn(II). The results revealed that protein-ligand interactions may influence the metal ion distribution in the serum.  相似文献
