Tiller appearance in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.)occurs in an orderly, predictable manner with the potentialfor a high degree of synchronization among tillers on a givenplant. Estimates of potential cumulative tiller production (Tmax)are made for synchronous (Tmaxlx = 2Lx+1 – 1, where Lxis the axil number of the youngest leaf on the main stem whichbears an emerged tiller) and non-synchronous (Tmax1 = 2L–NLAT–1,where L is the number of leaves on the main stem and NLAT thenumber of leaves above the youngest primary tiller at its appearance)conditions. A method for determining the degree of synchronizationand an equation for estimating site usage are also presented.Early in seedling development, site usage of a tall fescue populationwith high tillering capacity was near 90%, and tillering wasregulated largely by rate of tiller site formation. As the canopydeveloped the phyllochron (time between successive leaf appearances)and NLAT increased, slowing the rate of tiller production intemporal terms and in relation to leaf appearance, respectively.Beyond 45 d after planting, site usage decreased rapidly, furtherreducing tiller production. High tiller production appearedto be associated with synchronized tiller appearance, with alack of synchrony being associated with decreased site usage.Tillers formed in prophyll axils were less likely to be in synchronywith other tillers and frequently failed to appear. In contrastwith branching in dicotyledons, apical dominance appears toplay a minor role in regulating tillering in tall fescue Tillerproduction initially appears to proceed at near maximum ratesthen is down-regulated during later development by longer phyllochrons, slower rate of tiller elongation and reduced site usage. Tillering responses to the light environment and to defoliationwere studied in two populations of perennial ryegrass (LoliumperenneL.) selected for contrasting leaf lengths. The objectiveof this study was to determine whether differences in tilleringresponses between populations, as a result of management practices, affected their competitive ability. Young seedlings were exposed, under controlled conditions, to defoliation, neutral shading(decreased photosynthetic photon flux), low red:far-red ratioand/or decreased blue light. Selection for longer leaves reducedthe tillering rate. After defoliation, this difference betweenshort- and long-leaved populations was magnified. Defoliationdecreased both site filling and phyllochron of the long-leavedpopulation but had no effect on the short-leaved population.Lowering the photosynthetic photon flux reduced the phyllochronin both population. Decreasing the red:far-red ratio reducedtillering rate by reducing site filling, whereas decreasingblue light had no significant effects on tillering. Tilleringresponses to photosynthetic photon flux and to red:far-red ratiowere similar in the two populations selected for contrastingleaf length. The implication of these tillering responses indefining the competitive ability of the grass plants is discussedin relation to their management.Copyright 1999 Annals of BotanyCompany Blue light, defoliation, far-red, irradiance, leaf size,Lolium perenne(L.), perennial ryegrass, photomorphogenesis, phyllochron, shading, site filling, tiller production.  相似文献

Summary Many grasses are infected by endophytic fungi that grow intercellularly in leaves, stems, and flowers and are transmitted maternally by hyphal growth into ovules and seeds. The seed biology and seedling growth of endophyte-infected and uninfected perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) were investigated under controlled environmental conditions. The percentage of filled seeds produced by infected tall fescue was over twice of uninfected tall fescue; infected and uninfected perennial reegrass had similar percentages. Weights of seeds from infected and uninfected plants were similar in both species. Seeds from infected plants of both species exhibited a higher rate of germination than seeds from uninfected plants. Shoot growth in the greenhouse was compared by making three sequential harvests of above-ground plant parts from infected and uninfected plants of both species. Infected perennial ryegrass plants produced significantly more biomass and tillers than uninfected plants after 6 and 10 weeks of growth and significantly more biomass after 14 weeks of growth. Infected tall fescue plants produced significantly more biomass and tillers than uninfected plants after 10 and 14 weeks of growth. The physiological mechanism of enhancement of growth is not known. The results of this study suggest that infected plants may have a selective advantage in populations with uninfected members.  相似文献

Three grass host species--tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreber; meadow fescue, Festuca pratensis Hudson; and perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L.--each infected with a number of different Neotyphodium endophyte isolates, were investigated for their effects on fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Alkaloid profiles varied among associations. Choice and no-choice tests comparing feeding and early development of S. frugiperda larvae on endophyte-infected and endophyte-free leaf blade material were performed. Endophyte-mediated resistance to S. frugiperda was greatest in meadow fescue and weakest in tall fescue. Some endophyte isolates, particularly in perennial ryegrass and meadow fescue, had a major effect on feeding and development of S. frugiperda, whereas others had no effect or were only weakly efficacious. In tall fescue, some associations deterred S. frugiperda from feeding in choice tests but had no effect on development, whereas larvae reared on other associations weighed significantly more than control larvae fed endophyte-free grass. It was concluded that the deleterious consequences of endophyte infection were easily masked by other factors in tall fescue. Relative leaf age had no effect on feeding preferences in the three host species. Chemical analysis of herbage from the plants used, and results from a no-choice study using spiked artificial diets, failed to individually implicate any of the major known alkaloids (peramine, lolitrem B, ergovaline, and lolines) in the observed effects on S. frugiperda. Hypotheses explaining these observations, and their impact on creating desirable grass-endophyte associations for use in pastures, are discussed.  相似文献

Grass selections including 10 zoysiagrasses, 18 paspalums, 34 Bermuda grasses, tall fescue, creeping red fescue, and perennial ryegrasses with and without endophyte were evaluated for potential resistance to fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), larvae. Laboratory evaluations assessed the degree of antibiosis among >70 grass lines to first-instar fall armvworms. When all parameters measured were considered, the trend in resistance to fall armyworm among endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) cool season grasses from greatest to least was: 'Dawson' E+ > APR 1234 > 'Dawson' E- > 'Rosalin' E+ > Lp 5425, 'Rosalin' E-, ATF 480 > 'Tulsa' or: E+ slender creeping red fescue > E+ turf- type perennial ryegrass > E- slender creeping red fescue > E+ forage-type perennial ryegrass > E- forage-type perennial ryegrasses, and E+ tall fescue > E- turf-type tall fescue. Among warm season grasses larval weight gain was reduced on all zoysiagrasses. Larval weight gain also was lower on the Bermuda grasses 'Tifsport', 'Tifgreen', 97-4, 97-14, 97-22, 97-28, 97-39, 97-40,97-54, 98-15, 98-30, and 98-45 than when larvae were fed 'Tulsa' tall fescue or the diet control. Only APR1234 and 'Dawson' creeping red fescue reduced larval survival to the same extent that was observed for zoysiagrasses. Survival on Bermuda grasses was least on 97-8. Seashore paspalums were only rarely less susceptible to fall armyworm than tall fescue, although pupal weights were consistently lower on 'Temple 1' and 'Sea Isle 1' paspalums than that on 'Tulsa' tall fescue. Genetic resistance to key grass pests can reduce insecticide use and simplify management of these cultivars.  相似文献

A priority for the field vegetable grower is to be able to schedule a regular supply of product throughout the growing season. This requires a predictive framework, based on the identification of key developmental events of the crop, and an understanding of how genotypic and environmental factors interact to determine plant development. Four globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) cultivars, representing the existing phenological range, were grown in a field experiment, and a range of environmental conditions was imposed by varying both the timing of the first irrigation (which determines the initiation of regrowth) and by repeating the experiment across two locations and 2 years. The timing of the appearance of the main stem capitulum was sensitive to both the growing environment and the cultivar. These differences persisted till flowering and were correlated with final leaf number. As the plant developed, the phyllochron decreased, resulting in three values of phyllochron, each of which was responsive to genotype, and hardly to environment. The timing of the first change in phyllochron was associated with the final leaf number and the appearance of the capitulum. For all the cultivars, the rate of development fell and the final leaf number increased as the length of the photoperiod increased. The later flowering cultivars shared a similar vernalisation requirement, but ‘Spinoso sardo’ did not require a cold period to flower. Leaf length reached a peak before the beginning of stem elongation, and maximum leaf length was correlated with final leaf number. The sensitiveness of the phyllochron to the genotype, and of the number of leaves and the timing of the appearance of the capitulum to both genotype and environment makes them suitable as variables in developmental models. The importance of the final number of leaves is not only because of its phenological significance, but also because of its effect on the ability of the canopy to intercept radiation.  相似文献

Single plants of S24 perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and S215 meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) were transferred between, or exposed continuously to, contrasting light intensities obtained by decreasing the natural light in a glasshouse with Tygan shades. Inflorescence development in main shoots was studied by dissections of shoot apices, and by counts of branches and florets when ears emerged. Apical growth was slower, and spikelet initiation and inflorescence development were delayed or inhibited, in decreased light intensities. The number of main branches in the ear depended on the rate of apical growth before and after spikelet initiation, and on the time of spikelet initiation. In meadow fescue these processes were influenced by light intensity. Floret numbers per inflorescence branch were generally decreased by decreased light intensity. Most of the effects of light intensity on inflorescence development were smaller in ryegrass than in meadow fescue.  相似文献

Respiration rates remain high during senescence which is anenergy demanding process. Different rates of senescence mayexplain the contrasting respiration rates of mature leaves oftwo populations of perennial ryegrass cv. S23. This hypothesiswas tested by measuring the lengths of elongating and senescingleaves of plants of two populations (GL72, a slow and GL66,a fast respiring population) for 76 d following the transplantationof the seedlings into soil-filled pots in a growth room. Nitrogenwas supplied at two different rates at the beginning of theexperiment and again at day 36. At high levels of nitrogen supply the slow respiring populationhad a faster elongation rate and so a greater leaf length thanthe fast respiring population. There was no difference betweenthem in the rate of leaf senescence or in the duration of leafgrowth. Consequently, the fast respiring population is consideredprofligate in its use of carbon. By contrast, under low nitrogensupply both elongation and senescence rates were higher in thefast respiring population, although there was no differencein final leaf length. Therefore the longevity of leaves of thefast respiring population was reduced. It is argued that theleaves of the fast respiring population may turn-over mineralsmore rapidly than those of the slow, which may be more advantageousin conditions of low nitrogen supply and offset the benefitsof a more conservative use of carbon normally seen under conditionsof high nitrogen supply. The symbiotic relationships between Neotyphodium endophytes (Clavicipitacea) and certain cool‐season (C3) grasses result in the synthesis of several alkaloids that defend the plant against herbivory. Over a 3 month period we evaluated the effects of temperature on the expression of these alkaloids in tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb, and perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L. (Poaceae). Response surface regression analysis indicated that month, temperature, and their interaction had an impact on the alkaloid levels in both grasses. We aimed to identify the alkaloids most closely associated with enhanced resistance to the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda JE Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and clarify the role of temperature in governing the expression of these alkaloids. The dry weights and survival of fall armyworms feeding on endophyte‐infected tall fescue or perennial ryegrass were significantly lower than for those feeding on uninfected grass, whereas endophyte infection had no significant influence on survival. For tall fescue, a four‐alkaloid model consisting of a plant alkaloid, perloline, and the fungal alkaloids ergonovine chanoclavine, and ergocryptine, explained 47% of the variation in fall armyworm dry weight, whereas a three‐alkaloid model consisting of the plant alkaloid perloline methyl ether and the fungal alkaloids ergonovine and ergocryptine explained 70% of the variation in fall armyworm dry weight on perennial ryegrass. Although temperature had a significant influence on overall alkaloid expression in both grasses, the influence of temperature on individual alkaloids varied over time. The levels of those alkaloids most closely linked to armyworm performance increased linearly or curvilinearly with increasing temperature during the last 2 months of the study. We conclude that the growth temperature of grasses can influence the performance of fall armyworm, and that this effect may be mediated through a set of plant‐ and endophyte‐related alkaloids.  相似文献

Summary Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) protoplasts, inactivated by iodoacetamide, and non-morphogenic Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) protoplasts, both derived from suspension cultures, were electrofused and putative somatic hybrid plants were recovered. Two different genotypic fusion combinations were carried out and several green plants were regenerated in one of them. With respect to plant habitus, leaf and inflorescence morphology, the regenerants had phenotypes intermediate between those of the parents. Southern hybridization analysis using a rice ribosomal DNA probe revealed that the regenerants contained both tall fescue- and Italian ryegrass-specific-DNA fragments. A cloned Italian ryegrass-specific interspersed DNA probe hybridized to total genomic DNA from Italian ryegrass and from the green regenerated somatic hybrid plants but not to tall fescue. Chromosome counts and zymograms of leaf esterases suggested nuclear genome instability of the somatic hybrid plants analyzed. Four mitochondrial probes and one chloroplast DNA probe were used in Southern hybridization experiments to analyze the organellar composition of the somatic hybrids obtained. The somatic hybrid plants analyzed showed tall fescue, additive or novel mtDNA patterns when hybridized with different mitochondrial gene-specific probes, while corresponding analysis using a chloroplast gene-specific probe revealed in all cases the tall fescue hybridization profile. Independently regenerated F. arundinacea (+) L. multiflorum somatic hybrid plants were successfully transferred to soil and grown to maturity, representing the first flowering intergeneric somatic hybrids recovered in Gramineae.

The adverse effect of lodging on grass seed yield may be attributed,in part, to assimilate limitation during the seed filling period. This investigation examined plant dry matter assimilate partitioningand seed yield as affected by lodging in three species thatare closely related but phenotypically different: tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea Schreber.), Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorumLam.), and perennial ryegrass (L. perenne L.). Studies wereperformed in field plots at Corvallis, Oregon, USA. Seed yieldcomponents (seed number per inflorescence, seed yield per inflorescence, and single seed mass) and leaf, stem (lower, middle, and peduncle)and seed inflorescence dry mass were measured just prior toanthesis to seed maturity. Dry mass and water soluble carbohydrates(WSC) were determined for shoot components. The reduction indry mass and WSC in leaves and stem components following anthesiswas often greater in lodged plants compared to upright plants. The relatively low seed yield depression in lodged tall fescuesuggested a higher compensation potential for partitioning reserveassimilate from leaves and stems to support seed growth anddevelopment. This potential does not appear to be present tothe same degree in Italian ryegrass and to an even lesser extentin perennial ryegrass. These findings suggest that the potentialto compensate for reduced assimilate supply during the periodof high assimilate demand by seeds may be attributed, in part,to the total assimilate reserve accumulated prior to photoassimilatereduction caused by the lodged condition. Previous work suggested that cell wall peroxidase activity increased as cells were displaced through the elongation zone in leaf blades of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). In this study, two genotypes that differ in length of the elongation zone were used to examine the relationship between peroxidase activity in apoplastic fluid of intact leaf blade segments and the spatial distribution of leaf growth. Apoplastic fluid was extracted by vacuum infiltration and centrifugation, and peroxidase activity was assayed spectrophotometrically. Isoelectric focusing was used to characterize the isoforms of apoplastic peroxidase within the region of elongation and in the region of secondary cell wall deposition, which is distal to the elongation zone. A striking correlation was found in each genotype between both the location and timing of increase in apoplastic peroxidase activity and the onset of growth deceleration. Only cationic isoforms of apoplastic peroxidase could be identified in the elongation zone, whereas additional anionic isoforms appeared in the region of secondary cell wall deposition. We conclude that cessation of elongation growth in tall fescue leaf blades is likely to be related to the secretion of cationic isoforms of peroxidase into the cell wall.  相似文献

The aim of our work is to investigate the changes in phenolic level, PAL activity and heat production rate induced during pre-hardening at 12°C and cold acclimation at 2°C of the forage grasses Festulolium, meadow fescue, tall fescue and Italian ryegrass in relation to their resistance to snow mould caused by Microdochium nivale. Meadow fescue and tall fescue were most resistant to M. nivale infection, while Italian ryegrass demonstrated the least resistance to this fungus inoculation. Festulolium, meadow fescue and tall fescue responded similarly to low temperature, while Italian ryegrass demonstrated considerable disturbance of energy balance and lower phenolic concentration, which could explain a higher susceptibility of the latter species to infection by M. nivale. The enhanced level of phenolic compounds, probably utilised for cell wall lignification as well as equilibrium of the metabolic activity observed in meadow fescue and tall fescue, is very important for both cold and pathogen-resistance mechanisms. The studied Festulolium cultivar ‘Felopa’, a hybrid of the Lolium multiflorum and Festuca pratensis genomes, was characterised by changes in biochemical parameters similar to the resistant meadow fescue and tall fescue.  相似文献

In an experiment designed to investigate the rate of leaf appearanceand tiller production in young spaced plants of three clonesof perennial ryegrass grown in the field, it was found thatthe rate of leaf appearance per tiller increased linearly withmean soil temperature up to approx. 14 °C. The rate of productionof tillers in relation to the rate of leaf appearance (sitefilling) appeared to be virtually independent of weather conditions. In plants which were adequately established, but still relativelysmall, site filling was equal to or exceeded the theoreticalsteady state; all the tiller buds which were being formed weredeveloping into visible tillers. Thus the relative rate of tillerproduction was controlled by the rate of leaf appearance. Inlarger plants site filling was less complete, and site redundancieswere probably caused by within-plant competition for light atthe tiller bases. A sucrose: sucrose 1-fructosyltransferase (1-SST) gene and cDNA (Lp 1-SST) from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were isolated. The Lp 1-SST gene was fully sequenced and shown to contain three exons and two introns. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the 4824 bp Lp 1-SST genomic sequence revealed 1618 bp of 5' UTR and an open reading frame of 1962 bp encoding a protein of 653 amino acids. Lp 1-SST is 95% identical to the tall fescue 1-SST and contains plant fructosyltransferase functional domains. Lp 1-SST corresponds to a single copy gene in perennial ryegrass, and is expressed in young leaf bases and mature leaf sheaths. The recombinant Lp 1-SST protein from corresponding cDNA expression in Pichia pastoris showed 1-SST activity.  相似文献

Plant functional traits are thought to drive variation in primary productivity. However, there is a lack of work examining how dominant species identity affects trait–productivity relationships. The productivity of 12 pasture mixtures was determined in a 3‐year field experiment. The mixtures were based on either the winter‐active ryegrass (Lolium perenne) or winter‐dormant tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). Different mixtures were obtained by adding forb, legume, and grass species that differ in key leaf economics spectrum (LES) traits to the basic two‐species dominant grass–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures. We tested for correlations between community‐weighted mean (CWM) trait values, functional diversity, and productivity across all plots and within those based on either ryegrass or tall fescue. The winter‐dormant forb species (chicory and plantain) had leaf traits consistent with high relative growth rates both per unit leaf area (high leaf thickness) and per unit leaf dry weight (low leaf dry matter content). Together, the two forb species achieved reasonable abundance when grown with either base grass (means of 36% and 53% of total biomass, respectively, with ryegrass tall fescue), but they competed much more strongly with tall fescue than with ryegrass. Consequently, they had a net negative impact on productivity when grown with tall fescue, and a net positive effect when grown with ryegrass. Strongly significant relationships between productivity and CWM values for LES traits were observed across ryegrass‐based mixtures, but not across tall fescue‐based mixtures. Functional diversity did not have a significant positive effect on productivity for any of the traits. The results show dominant species identity can strongly modify trait–productivity relationships in intensively grazed pastures. This was due to differences in the intensity of competition between dominant species and additional species, suggesting that resource‐use complementarity is a necessary prerequisite for trait–productivity relationships.  相似文献

Leaf tissue of tall fescue Festuca arundinacea Schreb., hard fescue Festuca ovina L., red fescue Festuca rubra L. and perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne L. was stained with rose Bengal or aniline blue to detect the presence of the fungal endophyte Acremonium sp., Specimens were cleared using methyl salicylate, an optical clearing agent, and viewed using bright field microscopy. Tissue was presenred as dried tissue or stored in 70% aqueous ethyl alcohol before staining and clearing. Tissue was observed at 2, 4 and 12 weeks following clearing to check for stain retention. Staining with rose Bengal was inferior to aniline blue when followed by the clearing agent methyl salicylate. Fungal mycelia stained lighter with rose Bengal and were more difficult to detect than mycelia stained with aniline blue. The results illustrate the usefulness of combining staining and methyl salicylate clearing for detecting fungal endophytes.  相似文献

Persistence of forage grasses is enhanced through the deliberate and selective use of symbiotic fungal endophytes that confer benefits, particularly pest resistance. However, they have also been implicated in reduced plant community diversity as a result of directly or indirectly enhancing competitive ability. A relatively underexplored mechanism by which endophytes might influence pasture plant composition is by altering the biotic or abiotic soil conditions. To examine the soil conditioning effects of forage grass species and their fungal symbionts we tested the responses of three pasture plants, perennial ryegrass, prairie grass, and white clover in nine different soils that had been conditioned by monocultures of endophyte-containing (E+), or endophyte-free (E?), perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, or meadow fescue. Conditioning grass species had little effect on the responses of perennial ryegrass and prairie grass regardless of E+ or E? treatments. In contrast, conditioning species had a strong effect on the response of white clover, resulting in reduced biomass when grown in perennial ryegrass conditioned soils. The presence of endophyte also had significant growth consequences for white clover, but was either positive or negative depending on the conditioning grass species. In comparison to their respective E? treatments, E+ tall and meadow fescue conditioned soils resulted in reduced biomass of white clover, whereas E+ perennial ryegrass conditioned soils resulted in increased biomass of white clover. Among the conditioning strains (AR1, AR37, NEA2, WE) of E+ perennial ryegrass, white clover showed significantly different responses, but all responses were positive in comparison to the E? treatment. By examining the effects of several grass species and endophyte strains, we were able to determine the relative importance of grass species vs. fungal symbiont on soil conditioning. Overall, the conditioning effect of grass species was stronger than the effects associated with endophyte, particularly with regard to the response of white clover. We conclude that both grass species and their fungal endophytes can influence pasture plant community composition through plant–soil feedback.  相似文献
