Response of floodplain grassland plant communities to altered water regimes   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1  
Floodplain grasslands are often composed of a mosaic of plant communities controlled by hydrological regime. This article examines the sensitivity of floodplain grassland plant communities to water regime using reciprocal transplantation of an inundation grassland and a flood-meadow within an English floodplain. Experimental treatments comprised control, transplanted and lifted plots; the last treatment, in order to elucidate any disturbance effects of transplantation. Plant community response was analysed using species abundance and their ecological traits. Results from both communities showed substantial annual variations related to hydrology, including significant species changes, but generally, vegetation seemed to be responding to drier conditions following a major flood event. This ‘drying’ trend was characterised by increased species diversity, a greater abundance of competitive species and fewer typical wetland plants. Transplanted community composition increasingly resembled receptor sites and transplant effects were most pronounced the first year after treatment for both vegetation types. Differential responses to water regime were detected for the two plant communities. The inundation grassland community was particularly dynamic with a composition that rapidly reflected drying conditions following the major flood, but transplantation into a drier flood-meadow site prompted little additional change. The flood-meadow community appeared more resistant to post-inundation drying, but was sensitive to increased wetness caused by transplantation into inundation grassland, which significantly reduced six species while none were significantly favoured. The effects of disturbance caused by lifting the transplants were limited in both communities, although five species showed significant annual fluctuations. The study shows that small alterations in water regime can prompt rapid vegetation changes and significant plant species responses in floodplain grasslands, with effects probably magnified through competitive interactions. The dynamic properties of floodplain vegetation demonstrated by this study suggest that its classification, management and monitoring are challenging and ideally should be based on long-term studies.  相似文献

Ventura, J. and Casado‐Cruz, M. 2011. Post‐weaning ontogeny of the mandible in fossorial water voles: ecological and evolutionary implications. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 12–20. Geometric morphometrics was applied to the mandible of fossorial water voles (Arvicola terrestris monticola) to determine size and shape variations in this structure during post‐weaning ontogeny. The sample consisted of collection specimens obtained in the Aran Valley (Spain), which were grouped into six age classes. Mandible size and shape did not differ significantly between sexes, but between age classes. Mandible size accounted significantly for the shape variation. After the size‐related differences were removed, the mandible shape did not show significant sexual dimorphism but differences by age remained significant. The main shape changes occur between the third and tenth weeks of life and are related to the shift from suckling to a herbivorous diet. Although mandible shape was less remodelled after that age, an appreciable variation also occurs during adulthood. Age‐related changes lead to enhancing the digging potential of the mandible, which in adults becomes a robust structure with an increased surface and stronger crests for muscle insertion. As part of the mandible shape variation was not related to the size‐dependent adjustment and diet does not vary significantly between juvenile and adult voles, shape changes that occur during adulthood can be related to the mechanical stress derived from digging activities.  相似文献

The ability of weeds to form a seed bank is important for their population dynamics and management because it provides a refuge enabling reinvasion after established target plants have died. However, knowledge of the differential seed behaviour of individual species over multiple years and varying environmental conditions is surprisingly rare but necessary for effective control of diverse weed populations. We established a seed burial experiment in alpine habitats differing in management regime (i.e., forest, hay meadow and pasture) to determine whether seeds of the unpalatable perennial weeds, Veratrum album (white hellebore) and Gentiana lutea (yellow gentian) were able to delay germination and remain viable over 3 years. Our study shows that both species formed a short-term persistent seed bank; in the third-year, the soil seed banks of both species were nearly depleted, having declined to <5% of their original size. Both species had strikingly different germination strategies: G. lutea seeds mainly germinated in their first-year, whilst the majority of V. album seeds germinated in their second-year. The fraction of dormant G. lutea seeds increased with seed age, indicating that seeds remained viable after forgoing germination in the previous year. Habitat-specific differences in seed germination increased with seed age, with germination fractions being lowest in moist hay meadows. This suggests that the negative effects of anoxic conditions became more pronounced as seeds aged in hay meadows. Conversely, seed dormancy was equal among habitats. The absence of a long-term persistent seed bank has important implications for the management of both nuisance and endangered-plant populations. In the case of V. album and G. lutea, re-colonization of habitats from the seed bank is unlikely after established plants have been removed.  相似文献

The increase in nutrient availability as a consequence of elevated nitrogen (N) deposition is an important component of global environmental change. This is likely to substantially affect the functioning and provisioning of ecosystem services by drylands, where water and N are often limited. We tested mechanisms of chronic N-enrichment-induced plant species loss in a 10-year field experiment with six levels of N addition rate. Our findings on a semi-arid grassland in Inner Mongolia demonstrated that: (i) species richness (SR) declined by 16 per cent even at low levels of additional N (1.75 g N m–2 yr−1), and 50–70% species were excluded from plots which received high N input (10.5–28 g N m−2 yr−1); (ii) the responses of SR and above-ground biomass (AGB) to N were greater in wet years than dry years; (iii) N addition increased the inter-annual variations in AGB, reduced the drought resistance of production and hence diminished ecosystem stability; (iv) the critical threshold for chronic N-enrichment-induced reduction in SR differed between common and rare species, and increased over the time of the experiment owing to the loss of the more sensitive species. These results clearly indicate that both abundance and functional trait-based mechanisms operate simultaneously on N-induced species loss. The low initial abundance and low above-ground competitive ability may be attributable to the loss of rare species. However, shift from below-ground competition to above-ground competition and recruitment limitation are likely to be the key mechanisms for the loss of abundant species, with soil acidification being less important. Our results have important implications for understanding the impacts of N deposition and global climatic change (e.g. change in precipitation regimes) on biodiversity and ecosystem services of the Inner Mongolian grassland and beyond.  相似文献

Differential responses of Anopheles culicifacies Giles sibling species A and B to DDT were evident from higher survival rate of species B in laboratory bioassays and greater proportions of species B in DDT-sprayed villages of northern India, compared with those under HCH pressure. Both species A and B have become almost completely resistant to HCH in this area due to regular house-spraying with HCH for about the last 10 years. Because species A predominates in northern India, where it has been incriminated as an important vector of malaria, and species A is more susceptible than species B to DDT, it is suggested that DDT would control malaria transmission more effectively than HCH in this situation. Monitoring of insecticide resistance in species A is therefore recommended as the basis for future choice of insecticides to be used by the National Malaria Eradication Programme.  相似文献

Natural grasslands in southern Australia commonly exist in altered states. One widespread altered state is grassland pasture dominated by cool‐season (C3) native grasses maintained by ongoing grazing. This study explores the consequences of removing grazing and introducing fire as a conservation management tool for such a site. We examined the abundance of two native and three exotic species, across a mosaic of fire regimes that occurred over a three‐year period: unburnt, summer wild‐fire (>2 years previous), autumn management fire (<1 year previously) and burnt in both fires. Given that one aim of conservation management is to increase native species at the expense of exotics, the impacts of the fires were largely positive. Native grasses were at higher cover levels in the fire‐managed vegetation than in the unburnt vegetation. Of the three exotic species, one was consistently at lower density in the burnt plots compared to the unburnt plots, while the others were lower only in those plots burnt in summer. The results show that the response of a species varies significantly between different fire events, and that the effects of one fire can persist through subsequent fires. Importantly, some of the effects were large, with changes in the density of plants of over 100‐fold. Fire is potentially a cost‐effective tool to assist the ecological restoration of retired grassland pastures at large scales.  相似文献

A study was conducted in three villages in western Venezuela between February 1988 and October 1989 to determine the biting and resting activity of anophelines in relation to human habits, rainfall and fenitrothion spraying of houses. Mosquitoes were collected landing on humans inside and outside experimental huts throughout the night. Only three mosquitoes were found resting in the huts in the morning, but 2470 were collected resting on vegetation in the early morning. The collections yielded eleven species of anopheline, the most abundant being Anopheles nuneztovari, comprising over 75% of the total anophelines collected, followed by An.triannulatus, An.albitarsis s.l. and An.oswaldoi. The four most abundant species showed different diel patterns of biting. For An.nuneztovari the peak of activity was close to midnight indoors and outdoors, for An.triannulatus between 19.00 and 20.00 hours outdoors, for An.albitarsis mainly before midnight indoors and outdoors and for An.oswaldoi outdoors at 19.00 hours, with an additional smaller peak indoors at midnight. Most of the human population use bednets, go to bed before 22.00 hours and are therefore most exposed to mosquitoes that bite outdoors early in the night. Fenitrothion house-spraying failed to prevent large mosquito populations developing in the wet season, presumably because of their exophilic resting habits. The possible advantages of impregnation of existing bednets with pyrethroids, and provision of nets for people who do not have them, are discussed.  相似文献

Conventional and biological control of a native moth, Dalaca pallens (Blanchard) (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae), were evaluated in Southern Chile in relation to changes on community metrics (diversity, species richness, evenness and dominance) of a soil-dwelling invertebrate assemblage. Two experiments were conducted (in winter and spring) to compare non-target effects of Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and lambda-cyhalothrin insecticide. The invertebrate community was sampled before and after spraying by extracting soil cores. Estimates of diversity (Shannon index), species richness, evenness (Hurlbert’s Probability of Interspecific Encounter) and dominance indicated that the invertebrate assemblage was strongly disturbed by lambda-cyhalothrin treatment but not by B. bassiana applied in winter, over the sampling period (40 days). Spring results revealed that diversity and evenness at control and at B. bassiana plots were similar between them and higher than at lambda-cyhalothrin plots, while there were no differences between sites 30 days after treatment in species richness. Inundative biological control using B. bassiana strain QU-B931 was considered to pose lower ecological risk than lambda-cyhalothrin, currently one of the most frequently used insecticides for D. pallens control.  相似文献

Many sperm competition studies have identified copulation durationas an important predictor of paternity. This result is ofteninterpreted as a sperm transfer effect—it is assumed thatsperm transfer is limited by copulation duration. Here we testthe assumption of duration-dependent sperm transfer in the Australianredback spider, Latrodectus hasselti, in which a correlationbetween copulation duration and paternity has been implicatedin the evolution of a rare male self-sacrifice behavior. Maleredbacks facilitate sexual cannibalism by females during copulation.Sexual cannibalism is apparently adaptive for redback males,in part because it results in longer copulations (25 versus11 min.), and copulation duration is positively correlated withpaternity. We assessed sperm transfer in normal copulationsand in copulations that we terminated at 5, 10, or 20 min. Ourresults show that the paternity advantage of sexual cannibalismis not owing to time-dependent sperm transfer, as redback malestransfer the majority of their sperm within the first 5 minof copulation. This suggests that the link between copulationduration and paternity may instead be owing to cryptic femalechoice or the transfer of nongametic ejaculatory substances.Results further indicate that the act of cannibalism itselfmight play a role in mediating sperm transfer. This study highlightsthe importance of understanding mechanisms of sperm transferwhen attempting to interpret the outcome of sperm competitionstudies.  相似文献

The root‐borer Agrilus hyperici was established successfully in Australia in 1940 for the biological control of the weed Hypericum perforatum. It failed to spread widely, however, and surveys in 1980 found that it survived in only one area; near Mudgee in New South Wales. Two isolated populations were found here, both restricted to sheltered creek systems. The distribution of the larger population, at Piambong, was confined to an area of about 10 km2. In 1981–82, 76.8% of plants in the core of this area showed damage by larvae to their roots. Although the level of attack was lower than that known from southern Europe, survivorship patterns from larva to adult were similar, confirming A. hyperici to be a ’K‐selected’ insect. The population declined significantly following a severe drought in 1982. Consideration of the early history of their introductions coupled with knowledge of their biologies suggest that strong competition by Chrysolina spp., strongly ‘r‐selected’ insects introduced at the same time, may have restricted the development of A. hyperici. The danger of co‐releasing insects with different life‐history strategies is discussed.  相似文献

Eutrophication control is one of the major issues in the environmental policy in The Netherlands. As a result of international action programmes the average phosphorus loading of freshwater systems should decrease by 50% between 1985 and 1995. However, in many cases the restoration of water quality requires additional measures. Recovery is hampered by the structure and functioning of the present food-chain.

The feeding behaviour of the dominant fish species in Dutch lakes, bream and roach, tend to impose a homeostasis on the system, resisting restoration of water quality. In shallow lakes, biomanipulation, including drastic reduction of fish-stocks, may induce a shift from a stable ‘turbid-water state’ to a stable ‘clear-water state’.

To assess the possibilities of biomanipulation for the restoration of a particular lake, three questions are relevant: (1) is a drastic reduction of fish-stocks feasible?, (2) will a shift occur from ‘turbid to clear’ after the fish reduction? and (3) will the new situation of clear water be stable? This paper focuses attention on the last two questions. The increase in water clarity, following fish reduction, largely depends on the increase in the density of the Daphnia-population and the contribution of benthivorous fish to the resuspension of sediments. A ‘turbid to clear’ shift may be expected if the total biomass of planktivorous and benthivorous fish is reduced to levels<50 kg ha?1. The stability of the achieved clear-water state largely depends on the development of submerged macrophytes in the lake and on the level of nutrient loading. It is tentatively concluded that a stable clear-water state may be expected at initial total-P concentrations<0.10 mg l?1.

Because the water managers in The Netherlands have no fishing rights, they have to.co-operate with anglers and commercial fishermen to apply biomanipulation as a tool for water management.

The naked mole-rat (NMR) Heterocephalus glaber is a unique and fascinating mammal exhibiting many unusual adaptations to a subterranean lifestyle. The recent discovery of their resistance to cancer and exceptional longevity has opened up new and important avenues of research. Part of this resistance to cancer has been attributed to the fact that NMRs produce a modified form of hyaluronan—a key constituent of the extracellular matrix—that is thought to confer increased elasticity of the skin as an adaptation for living in narrow tunnels. This so-called high molecular mass hyaluronan (HMM-HA) stems from two apparently unique substitutions in the hyaluronan synthase 2 enzyme (HAS2). To test whether other subterranean mammals with similar selection pressures also show molecular adaptation in their HAS2 gene, we sequenced the HAS2 gene for 11 subterranean mammals and closely related species, and combined these with data from 57 other mammals. Comparative screening revealed that one of the two putatively important HAS2 substitutions in the NMR predicted to have a significant effect on hyaluronan synthase function was uniquely shared by all African mole-rats. Interestingly, we also identified multiple other amino acid substitutions in key domains of the HAS2 molecule, although the biological consequences of these for hyaluronan synthesis remain to be determined. Despite these results, we found evidence of strong purifying selection acting on the HAS2 gene across all mammals, and the NMR remains unique in its particular HAS2 sequence. Our results indicate that more work is needed to determine whether the apparent cancer resistance seen in NMR is shared by other members of the African mole-rat clade.  相似文献

The time at which natural enemies colonize crop fields is an important determinant of their ability to suppress pest populations. This timing depends on the distance between source and sink habitats in the landscape. Here we estimate the time to colonization of sink habitats from a distant source habitat, using empirical mark-capture data of Diadegma semiclausum in Broccoli. The data originated from experiments conducted at two locations and dispersal was quantified by suction sampling before and after a major disturbance. Three dispersal kernels were fitted to the dispersal data: a normal, a negative exponential, and a square root negative exponential kernel. These kernels are characterized by a thin, intermediate and a fat tail, respectively. The dispersal kernels were included in an integro-difference equation model for parasitoid population redistribution to generate estimates of time to colonization of D. semiclausum in sink habitats at distances between 100 and 2000 m from a source. We show that the three dispersal kernels receive similar support from the data, but can produce a wide range of outcomes. The estimated arrival time of 1% of the D. semiclausum population at a distance 2000 m from the source ranges from 12 days to a length of time greatly exceeding the life span of the parasitoid. The square root negative exponential function, having the thickest tail among the tested functions, gave the fastest spread and colonization in three of the four data sets, but it gave the slowest redistribution in the fourth. In all four data sets, the rate of accumulation at the target increased with the mean dispersal distance of the fitted kernel model, irrespective of the fatness of the tail. This study underscores the importance of selecting a proper dispersal kernel for modelling spread and colonization time of organisms, and of the collection of pertinent data that enable kernel estimation and that can discriminate between different kernel shapes.  相似文献

Summary In Australia, controlling introduced predators across large areas is unlikely to be successful without careful consideration of the predator's ecology, the economics of the control exercise and the distribution of the taxa to be protected from the predator. Inadequate strategic planning in pest control is commonplace and there is a need for better methods for determining where, when and how to control predators. The present paper describes a method (currently being introduced into planning programmes) of using areas of high prey species integrity (conservation kernels) to identify strategically optimal areas for predator control (particularly Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes ), across broad landscapes. These landscapes are selected using a geographical information system and a combination of predictive habitat models and records of threatened species at risk of predation by the Red Fox, to identify sites of biological wealth. We propose this method as a first step in developing a strategic predator control plan.  相似文献

Grazing rates and behaviors of the copepod Neocalanus plumchrus were investigated in shipboard experiments during the first SUPER Program cruise (May, 1984). N. plumchrus can exploit cells in the 2 to 30 m size range with equal clearance efficiency but displays considerable flexibility in responding to changes in concentration and size composition. Its functional response helps to stabilize phytoplankton at low densities. In 60-liter microcosms, a density of one copepod liter–1 was sufficient to maintain the ambient abundance and structure of the phytoplankton community for a week. In the absence of the copepod, phytoplankton bloomed to unnaturally high levels, and the community composition was dramatically altered. Despite its grazing potential, N. plumchrus was not present in sufficient density to control phytoplankton blooms in the subarctic Pacific.
