Summary Out of 750 soil samples collected from various regions of Romania, during 1958–1967, a positive percentage of 86 was positive for keratinophilic fungi. Among the 13 isolated species, the most prevalent wereM. gypseum (54.6 %),C. keratinophilum (40.1 %) andK. (T.)ajelloi (27 %). BesideT. terrestre, found in 8.9 % of the examined soil samples, the percentage of the remaining species is low, not exceeding 4 %. In order of frequency:C. (T).evolceanui (3.2 %),M. cookei (2.2 %),T. mentagrophytes (2 %),T. quinckeanum (0.9 %),C. (T.)indicum (0.6 %). There have been also isolated, but only once;M. canis, A. multifidum, T. georgiae andT. vanbreuseghemii.The studies carried out on the immunobiological properties of the Romanian soil isolates (including intracutaneous tests, serological reactions and therapeutic efficiency), have showed a close relationship between these fungi and the common pathogenic dermatophytes. The pathogenic power of the keratinophilic fungi is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Summary The fluorescent antibody technique was used to study antigenic relationships betweenParacoccidioides loboi and other pathogenic fungi. The findings suggest thatP. loboi is more closely related antigenically to certainP. brasiliensis strains than to others and that it has antigens in common with the yeast form ofHistoplasma capsulatum, H. duboisii, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Candida albicans and also the mycelial form ofCoccidioides immitis. Serum globulins from 3 cases of keloidal blastomycosis were labelled with fluorescein isothiocyanate. These conjugates showed slight or no reactivity withP. loboi, the yeast forms ofP. brasiliensis, H. capsulatum, H. duboisii andB. dermatitidis, However, they stained brightlyC. albicans, serotypes A and B, the tissue form ofC. immitis and the yeast form ofSporotrichum schenckii. Adsorption of these reagents withC. albicans eliminated all staining except that forS. schenckii. These patients had no history of clinical sporotrichosis.Deceased. Summary Twenty-seven soil samples from Kenya and 9 from Egypt were investigated for the presence of keratinophilic and pathogenic fungi. No systemic pathogenic fungi was obtained, while a total of 25 dermatophytes belonging to four species was isolated. The majority of the Kenya isolates belonged toM. gypseum, while Egyptian isolates belonged toT. mentagrophytes. Shady sites frequented by humans or animals produced higher incidences of dermatophytes in Kenya than those of the unshady isolated areas.  相似文献

Summary Fifty-seven samples of desert soils were screened for pathogenic fungi by injection into cortisone-treated and non-treated mice. Four samples yielded pathogenic fungi in the cortisone-treated mice only.Nocardia asteroides was isolated from the cortisone-treated mice and from the controls. All of the cortisone-treated and the control mice injected with soil from the root zone of a dead century plant became critically ill very shortly after injection and cultures from all of the animals showed a variety of fungi. Seven species were isolated from the cortisone-treated animals and 5 species from the controls.The yeast,Torulopsis glabrata, was found in 69 of the 225 control mice and in 115 of the 213 cortisone-treated animals that came to autopsy. This organism was not considered to have been derived from the soil.The results appear to justify the conclusion that this method of soil screening deserves further consideration and study.  相似文献

During the study of fungal succesion in the coal mine dump in Brzezinka (Poland), soil samples were examined for keratinolytic fungi. These micro-organisms were rather poorly represented in the area studied. Out of 300 soil samples examined, only 48 (16%) were positive for keratinolytic fungi.Trichophyton ajelloi andArthroderma curreyi were the prevailing species. These species occurred practically at two locations, i.e. on the naked carbon rocks inhabited by algae crops (chiefly byCyanophyta) and in the pine litter. It can be supposed that the occurrence of keratinolytic fungi was more dependent on the favourable general conditions such as increasing organic matter content, microflora, and humidity than on the presence of keratin remains in the soil. Because of the lack of potentially pathogenic fungi, the coal mine dump examined cannot be considered as an important source of fungal infection.  相似文献

Acanthamoeba spp. are opportunistic pathogens that are ubiquitous in nature. Many species of this genus are responsible for a fatal encephalitis and keratitis in humans and other animals. Seventy‐two soil samples were collected from the parishes across Jamaica and assessed for the presence of Acanthamoeba spp. Cultivation was carried out on non‐nutrient agar plates seeded with heat killed Escherichia coli. PCR and sequencing of the DF3 region were carried out in order to genotype the isolated strains of Acanthamoeba. Thermotolerance and osmotolerance assays were utilized to investigate the pathogenic potential of the Acanthamoeba isolates. Acanthamoeba spp. was isolated from 63.9% of soil samples. Sequencing of the DF3 region of the 18S rDNA resulted in the identification of genotypes T4, T5, and T11. T4 genotype was most frequently isolated. Most isolates were thermotolerant or both thermotolerant and osmotolerant, indicating that they may present the potential to cause disease in humans and other animals.  相似文献

As part of a study sponsored by the Ministry of Health of Italy, a research program on pathogenic actinomycetes, keratinophilic and pathogenic fungi in soil was carried out. Two hundred soil samples, collected from different areas of the city of Rome, Calabria, Emilia Romagna, Latium, Apulia, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany and Umbria, were examined by several techniques to detect the widest possible variety of pathogenic actinomycetes and fungi. Seven isolates ofNocardia asteroides, four ofActinomadura madurae and one ofNocardiopsis dassonvillei were isolated for the first time from soil in Italy. In addition, numerous isolates ofPetriellidium boydii, Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger and keratinophilic fungi of the generaMicrosporum, Trichophyton andChrysosporium were also recovered.Presented at the VII Congress of the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology, Jerusalem, Israel, 11–16 March, 1979.  相似文献

Soil collected from 54 areas in and around Bogota, Colombia were examined for the presence of keratinophilic fungi by theVanbreuseghem's hair baiting technique. The organisms isolated and frequency are indicated:Trichophyton terrestre, 33;T. ajelloi, 32;Chrysosporium keratinophilum, 30;Microsporon gypseum, 14; andM. fulvum, 1. The perfect stage,Nannizzia gypsea, 1; andArthroderma quadrifidum, 2; were observed growing on hair in three plates.The following organisms apparently have been reported for the first time from soil samples in Colombia:M. fulvum, T. ajelloi, T. terrestre, C. keratinophilum, N. gypsea, andA. quadrifidum.  相似文献

A review of the mycoses of Oceania, defined as the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia, has revealed the occurrence of cutaneous, subcutaneous and systemic mycoses.Tinea versicolor is the most prevalent of the cutaneous mycotic infections. Dermatophyte infections are also common. The etiologic agents incriminated have beenEpidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, members of theMicrosporum fulvum-gypseum complex,Trichophyton concentricum, T. mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, T. tonsurans andT. verrucosum. Only one case of tinea nigra has been reported and that was in Hawaii. Among the fungi that cause subcutaneous mycoses onlyAllescheria boydii, Nocardia brasiliensis, Madurella mycetomi andSporothrix schenckii have been encountered to date. Among the systemic mycoses, actinomycosis, cryptococcosis and histoplasmosis have been found to be present. Summary p-hydroxy methyl benzoate is fungistatic, in rather low concentrations, to pathogenic fungi. 0.1 %p-hydroxy methyl benzoate was required to inhibit growth ofCandida albicans andMonosporium apiospermum on a Sabouraud's agar medium.Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. tonsurans, Geotrichum sp.,Sporotrichum schenckii, Blastomyces dermatitidis andCryptococcus neoformans failed to grow in the presence of 0.05 %p-hydroxy methyl benzoate. Growth ofEpidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum audouini, M. canis, M. gypseum, Trichophyton ferrugineum, T. rubrum, Hormodendrum compactum, H. Pedrosoi, Phialophora verrucosa, Nocardia asteroides, Coccidioides immitis, Haplosporangium parvum andHistoplasma capsulatum was suppressed by 0.025 % but not by 0.0125 % of this compound.  相似文献

Summary 32 cases of non tuberculous chronic pulmonary diseases and 10 cases of chronic pulmonary tuberculosis not responding to the routine treatment, were investigated to find out if fungi played any role in their etiology. Fungi were isolated from 9 cases of non-tuberculous and 2 cases of tuberculous pulmonary infections.Fungi as such seem to play some role in the etiology of Pulmonary Diseases and probably also help in keeping up the disease in tuberculous cases. Mycostatin is the drug of choice in the treatment of pulmonary moniliasis.Sputa and bronchial aspirates from 32 cases of non-tuberculous chronic pulmonary diseases and 10 cases of chronic pulmonary tuberculosis, not responding to the routine treatment, were repeatedly examined to find out if fungi played any role in their etiology. Fungi were isolated from 9 cases of non-tuberculous (C. albicans from 8 andActinomyces bovis from 1) and two cases (C. albicans from both) of tuberculous pulmonary infections. All the strains ofC. albicansandA. bovis isolated were tested for their sensitivity against Nystatin. Only strains ofC. albicans were found to be sensitive to Nystatin. Two cases treated with Mycostatin improved rapidly.
Zusammenfassung Sputum and Bronchialsekret von 32 Fällen von nicht-tuberkulösen chronischen Lungenkrankheiten und von 10 Fällen von chronischer Lungentuberkulose, die auf Routinebehandlung nicht ansprachen, sind wiederholt daraufhin untersucht worden, ob Pilze eine aetiologische Rolle spielten. Pilze sind in 9 nicht-tuberkulösen Fällen (C. albicans in 8,Actinomyces bovis in einem Falle) und in 2 tuberkulösen Fällen (C. albicans in beiden) isoliert worden.Alle isolierten Stämme vonC. albicans andA. bovis sind auf ihre Sensitivität gegen Nystatin untersucht worden. NurC. albicans war sensitiv gegen Nystatin. Zwei Fälle, die mit Mycostatin behandelt wurden, zeigten rasche Besserung.

Summary Evans' tube and cellophane agar-disc techniques were used to evaluate the colonization capacity of the soil microbes and fungistasis, respectively. Spore germination ofAlternaria tenuis, Curvularia geniculata, Helminthosporium rostratum andPestalotia sp. was studied on a natural soil. Aspergillus fumigatus was the pioneer colonizer, followed in the order of decreasing colonizing capacity by,A. flavus, A. niger, A. terreus andPenicillium nigricans. Sensitivity of test spores to soil fungistasis declined in the order,C. geniculata → Pestalotia sp. →A. tenuis → H. rostratum. The fungistatic level of the soil samples decreased gradually from side arms 1 to 7 of the Evans tube, inoculated with unsterilized soil from one end. Studies conducted with an inoculum of four soil fungi (A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, andP. nigricans) as well as those involving fumigation of Evans tube by CS2 also proved the greater colonizing capacity ofA. fumigatus. The level of fungistasis followed closely the colonization pattern of this fungus. When added individually to the soil, all fungi were able to inhibit spore germination of test fungi to some degree or other.  相似文献

Background  

Sporothrix schenckii is a pathogenic dimorphic fungus, the etiological agent of sporotrichosis, a lymphocutaneous disease that can remain localized or can disseminate, involving joints, lungs, and the central nervous system. Pathogenic fungi use signal transduction pathways to rapidly adapt to changing environmental conditions and S. schenckii is no exception. S. schenckii yeast cells, either proliferate (yeast cell cycle) or engage in a developmental program that includes proliferation accompanied by morphogenesis (yeast to mycelium transition) depending on the environmental conditions. The principal intracellular receptors of environmental signals are the heterotrimeric G proteins, suggesting their involvement in fungal dimorphism and pathogenicity. Identifying these G proteins in fungi and their involvement in protein-protein interactions will help determine their role in signal transduction pathways.  相似文献

Melanin pigments are substances produced by a broad variety of pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and helminths. Microbes predominantly produce melanin pigment via tyrosinases, laccases, catecholases, and the polyketide synthase pathway. In fungi, melanin is deposited in the cell wall and cytoplasm, and melanin particles (“ghosts”) can be isolated from these fungi that have the same size and shape of the original cells. Melanin has been reported in several human pathogenic dimorphic fungi including Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Sporothrix schenckii, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, and Coccidioides posadasii. Melanization appears to contribute to virulence by reducing the susceptibility of melanized fungi to host defense mechanisms and antifungal drugs.  相似文献

The serological cross-reactivity ofSporothrix schenckii with various unrelated fungi was investigated by use of immunodiffusion tests. A rabbit antiS. schenckii serum was obtained, which reacted withCladosporium werneckii, C. carrionii, C. bantianum, Coccidioides immitis, Phialophora jeanselmei, P. gougerotii, P. dermatitidis, Fonsecaea pedrosoi, Aspergillus fumigatus, Histoplasma capsulatum andTrichophyton mentagrophytes, but not withSaccharomyces cerevisiae antigens. Soil samples from an agricultural field contaminated with 10 ppm14C-benz(a)anthracene in glass tubes were brought into contact with cultures of wood-rotting fungi, precultivated on wheat straw substrate. Forty-five strains of white-rot fungi and four brown-rot fungi were tested for their ability to colonize the soil and to mineralize14C-benz(a)anthracene to14CO2 within a 20-week incubation time. Twenty-two white-rot fungi and all brown-rot fungi were unable to colonize the soil. Twenty-three strains of white-rot fungi, all belonging to the genusPleurotus, colonized the soil. During the experiment the noncolonizing fungi and their substrate disintegrated more and more to a nonstructured pulp from which water diffused into the soil. The same phenomenon was observed in the control which contained only straw without fungus and contaminated soil. In samples with colonizing fungi the substrate as well as the mycelia in the soil remained visibly unchanged during the entire experiment. Surprisingly, most samples with fungi not colonizing the soil and the control without fungus liberated between 40 and 58 % of the applied radioactivity as14CO2 whereas the samples with the colonizing fungi respired only 15–25 % as14CO2. This was 3–5 times more14CO2 than that liberated from the control (4.9 %) which contained only contaminated soil without straw and fungus. A similar result was obtained with selected colonizing and noncolonizing fungi and soil contaminated with 10 ppm14C-pyrene. However, in pure culture studies in which14C-pyrene was added to the straw substrate,Pleurotus sp. (P2), as a representative of the colonizing fungi, mineralized 40.3 % of the added radioactivity to14CO2. The noncolonizing fungiDichomitus squalens andFlammulina velutipes liberated only 17.2 or 1.7 %, respectively, as14CO2. These results lead to the hypothesis that the native soil microflora stimulated by the formed products of straw lysis is responsible for high degradation rates found with noncolonizing fungi.  相似文献

Two hundred and twenty-six samples of woody materials, vegetable matter and soil were processed by the direct plating and mouse inoculation technique for the isolation of pathogenic dematiaceous fungi. The species of fungi isolated were Fonsecaea pedrosoi — 13, Cladosporium carrionii — 7 and Phialophora verrucosa — 4 isolates. The mouse inoculation technique was found to be much better than direct plating for the recovery of these fungi. Woody plant materials proved to be a good sample source for pathogenic dematiaceous fungi contributing about 90% of the isolates. All the isolates were pathogenic for mice as evidenced by the presence of dark nodular lesions containing fungal elements in the organs of experimentally infected animals.  相似文献

Birds’ nests may be refuges for various species of fungi including that which are potentially phytopathogenic and zoopathogenic. Among the 2449 isolates of fungi obtained from nests of Marsh harriers 96.8% belonged to filamentous fungi. In total, 37 genera were identified from 63 fungi species. Within the mycobiotas of the examined nests populations of fungi which are potentially pathogenic for humans, homoiothermous animals and plants dominated. Among 63 species, 46 (72%) were potentially pathogenic fungi of which 18 species were potentially phytopathogenic and 32 species were pathogenic for homoiothermous animals. Inter alia species of fungi were found in the Marsh harriers nests: Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus flavus, Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, Chrysosporium keratinophilum and Fusarium poae, Fusarium sporotrichioides. In terms of numbers, dominant in Marsh harrier nests were fungi pathogenic to birds, other homoiothermous animals and humans. On that basis it was concluded that Marsh harrier nests are both a source of fungal infections for that species and one of the links in the epidemiological cycle of opportunistic fungi for humans.  相似文献

A study of the mycobiota in the digestive tract of 5 important species of triatomines, Triatoma brasiliensis, T. infestans, T. sordida, T. pseudomaculata and T. vitticeps, was made. The digestive tracts of 164 adults and 535 nymphs of those triatomines were studied and 393 fungal strains were isolated.The genera with the greatest number of species were Penicillium (19 species), Aspergillus (17 species) and Acremonium (5 species) and the most frequent species, in decreasing order, were Penicillium corylophilum, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium fellutanum, Cladosporium herbarum, Penicillium waksmanii, Aspergillus awamori and Paecilomyces variotii. Among the isolated fungi, we found species that are recognized as entomopathogenic and pathogenic for humans and animals.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
