Fish larvae were sampled in 1986 in the St. Clair River, and adjacent waters. Species richness (9 taxa as larvae; 4 others as juveniles) and abundance was lowest in the river, where many larvae (e.g., burbot, rainbow smelt, and yellow perch) were in transit from Lake Huron. The most abundant, and localized, species was gizzard shad, which reached a peak mean density of 4600 larvae 100 m-3 in an agricultural canal. Adjacent waters contribute greatly to the fish communities of the river and adjoining Lakes Huron and Erie, especially in terms of the number and quantity of forage species. 相似文献

Samples of fish larvae collected in 1983, 1984, and 1986 in two distributary channels of the St. Clair River delta were characteristically rich in species (a total of 48) and low in abundance (generally less than a mean of 5 100 m-3 of water filtered). Most species were residents of the delta; others apparently hatched in tributaries of the St. Clair River or in southern Lake Huron, and drifted into the delta. Highest species diversity was nearshore, although largest catches of larvae were of rainbow smelt, gizzard shad, and alewife, which were found mainly in mid-channel. The impact of impoundment on the energy budget and gross ecological efficiency (K
1) of fish populations in sites upstream from the backwater (AB) and downstream of the dam (CD) of a manmade reservoir (17.6 km2) located in the middle reaches of the lowland Warta River (808 km long), was investigated.Consumption (MJ ha–1 yr-1) in four years following the reservoir's impoundment was 34–74% lower in site AB, and 43–75% in site CD than before the impoundment. 1 of investigated species was higher before the impoundment and only pike exhibited an inverse efficiency trend. Significant differences were also observed in the diet of certain dominant fish species, which resulted from a change in the food supply as well as a reduction in their life span after the river was dammed. 相似文献

The relationship between vertical migration, estuarine retention and species-specific patterns of longitudinal distribution of the pelagic larvae of rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax , and tomcod, Microgadus tomcod , was investigated in the upper section of the St Lawrence Middle Estuary. We hypothesized that the species-specific use of the vertical pattern of current exhibited by the two species results in the partitioning of the estuarine habitat in the longitudinal plane while assuring retention. Important differences in the longitudinal distribution of tomcod and smelt larvae were related to the ontogeny of their vertical distribution in the water column. In June, small tomcod and smelt larvae are generally associated with waters of salinities less than 5%o. As the larvae grow, their vertical distribution patterns change, leading to a horizontal separation of the two species. Tomcod juveniles migrate downstream into colder, more saline waters, whereas larger smelt larvae migrate upstream into warmer, tidal fresh waters. Ontogenetic changes in vertical distribution serve to concentrate larvae in specific conditions that may optimize physiological conditions and also permit population persistence. 相似文献

1. Larvae of ‘sábalo’, Prochilodus lineatus, whose adults represent over 60% of overall fish biomass in the Río de la Plata Catchment, have been observed to feed intensively on veligers of the exotic bivalve Limnoperna fortunei. 2. To assess the effects of this dietary shift on the growth of P. lineatus, 28‐day laboratory experiments were carried out feeding newly hatched P. lineatus larvae with three diets: zooplankton artificially enriched with L. fortunei veligers; natural zooplankton; and zooplankton artificially enriched with cladocerans and copepods. The average length, weight and gut contents of the fish larvae were assessed weekly and metabolic rates of fish larvae were measured. 3. Proportions of veligers in gut contents were always higher than those in the experimental diet: 100, 76 and 21% for veliger‐enriched, natural and low‐veliger diets, respectively. Larvae fed a veliger‐enriched diet grew to a significantly larger size than larvae fed the other two diets. In energetic balance comparisons using metabolic rates and prey energy content, all three diets were sufficient to support metabolism and growth. The greatest values of excess energy at the end of each week were in the veliger‐enriched experiments. 4. Feeding on veligers of L. fortunei significantly enhances the growth of P. lineatus larvae and supports the idea that this new and abundant resource is selectively preyed upon by P. lineatus during its larval stage. Higher growth rates may stem from the higher energy contents of veligers compared to crustaceans and/or from the lower energy costs of capturing slower prey. 相似文献

This study analyses the temporal and spatial changes in abundance and distribution of the warm water species round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) in the western Mediterranean over the last decades in relation to sea water temperature. In the western Mediterranean basin (1950–2003), a significant positive relationship was found between round sardinella landings and temperature anomalies. Along a latitudinal gradient off the Mediterranean Iberian coast (1989–2004), a gradual increase in species abundance was observed from south to north, with a certain time lag going northwards, associated with the increase in sea water temperature. The abundance of round sardinella in the two warmest and southernmost areas was positively and significantly correlated with sea surface temperature registered during the start of gonad maturation the previous year. In addition, the positive relationship established between water temperature and abundance of round sardinella in the coldest and northernmost study area demonstrates that there is a temperature limit for the distribution of this species in the western Mediterranean. In addition, this study analyses round sardinella larvae distribution and abundance in the summers of 2003 and 2004, and conducts a comparison with the situation 20 years ago (summer 1983). Results show a marked increase in larval abundance during the last decades and the present appearance of larvae in the northernmost study areas, where they did not occur 20 years ago. This indicates the successful reproduction of round sardinella in the northern part of the Mediterranean, where the species has expanded, confirming its establishment in the area. 相似文献

Microhabitat use and habitat partitioning for 10 darter species (Percidae: Etheostomatini) were studied by direct observation (snorkeling) at five sites in the Elk River drainage, West Virginia, U.S.A. We used canonical discriminant analysis and univariate tests to determine microhabitat variables that were important in segregating species. Darter species were segregated by depth, substrate size, and water velocity. In addition, Percina typically occurred in the water column, whereas species of Etheostoma were benthic and segregated by occurring under, between, and on top of rocks. 相似文献

A total of 76 reef fish species from 31 families was collected at two coral reef sites, one in a marine reserve and the other in an adjacent fished area of the Soufrière Marine Management Area (SMMA) in St. Lucia. Five families (Scaridae, Pomacentridae, Synodontidae, Apogonidae and Blennidae) dominated the collections at both sites while species of high commercial value were rare. Monthly patterns of larval supply differed among selected species, but overall trends were similar between the two sites for most species. However, despite the geographical proximity of the two sites, the fished area received a consistently higher abundance and diversity of larvae than the marine reserve throughout the study period. Patterns in larval supply generally were reflected in the settlement patterns of Stegastes partitus. Results suggest that local-scale variation in hydrodynamic and or biological features is influencing the arrival and hence settlement of larvae at the reef. 相似文献

The importance of the Banc d'Arguin (Mauritania) for juvenile fish has been investigated in September 1988. Fish have been sampled with a 2 m beam trawl at 50 locations in the coastal zone between Cap Sainte Anne and Cap Timiris. Water depth varied between 1 and 16 metres. Temperature and salinity at each station have been measured, as well as the weight of the catch and total length of the individual fish. The largest catches — in numbers as well as in weight — were obtained around the shallows of Tidra and Arel. This region has a large diversity in species, and contains large numbers of juvenile fish and cephalopods. The deeper areas seem to be much poorer in species, but average length and weight of the sampled fish are higher than around Tidra and Arel. 相似文献

Larvae of several ocean pelagic fish species, such as tunas and marlins, have been known to have large jaws, but the ecological
significance of this unique morphological character has been hardly analyzed in evolutionary ecology. Pelagic spawners produce
small and nutrition-poor ova, and spawning and nursery grounds of the open ocean migratory fishes are oligotrophic. We hypothesize
that cannibalism would be a possible life style in the larval period and the large mouth gape would be an adaptive morphological
characteristic for a cannibal in the oligotrophic pelagic environment. We showed that mouth gape size of the open ocean pelagic
fish is significantly larger than that of offshore/coastal pelagic fish in larval period. A mathematical model demonstrated
that cannibalism would tend to evolve in high sea environment. Our findings suggest an evolutionary pattern of cannibalism
trait in the larval stage of pelagic fishes.

It is widely accepted that climate change constrains biota. Yet, because of the lack of consistent multisite and multitaxon surveys, few studies have addressed general rules about how climate change impacts on structure and diversity of animal communities. Especially, the relative influence of nonclimatic anthropogenic disturbances on this impact is fairly unknown. Here, we present for the first time a meta-analysis assessing the effect of global warming on stream organisms. Fish communities of large rivers in France undergoing various anthropogenic pressures showed significant increase in proportions of warm-water species and of specific richness during the last 15–25 years. Conversely, the equitability decreased, indicating a gradual decrease of the number of dominant species. Finally, the total abundance increased, coupled with rejuvenation and changes in size-structure of the communities. Interestingly, most of these effects were not depressed by the strength of nonclimatic anthropogenic disturbances. Conversely, geographical location of communities and especially closeness of natural barriers to migration could influence their response to climate change. Indeed, increase in the proportion of southern species seemed hindered at sites located close to the southern limit of the European species' geographical ranges. This work provides new evidence that climate change have deep impacts on communities which, by overtaking the effects of nonclimatic anthropogenic disturbances, could be more substantial than previously thought. Overall, our results stress the importance of considering climate change impacts in studies addressing community dynamics, even in disturbed sites. 相似文献

1. Elevated allochthonous inputs of nutrients and sediments to aquatic ecosystems are associated with eutrophication and sedimentation. Reservoirs receive substantial subsidies of nutrients and sediments from catchments due to their large catchment : lake area ratios. We examined the effect of elevated subsidies of sediments and/or dissolved nutrients on the success (survival, growth, biomass and condition factor) of larval gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), a widespread and dominant omnivorous fish in reservoir ecosystems. 2. We simulated allochthonous agricultural subsides by manipulating dissolved nutrients and sediment inputs in a 2 × 2 factorial design in experimental mesocosms. We predicted that larval fish success would be greater under elevated nutrients. However, we propose two alternative hypotheses with respect to the overall effect of allochthonous sediment inputs. If sediment inputs negatively affect larval gizzard feeding success, larval success would be highest when only nutrients are added and lowest when only sediments are added (+N > +N+S ≥ C > +S). If high turbidity enhances larval foraging activity (due to greater contrast between prey and background), we predict that larval success would be highest when both subsidy types (nutrients and sediment) are elevated, intermediate when either nutrients or sediments are added and the lowest when no subsidies are added (+N+S > +N ≥ +S > C). 3. Our results indicate that elevated nutrient and sediment conditions enhanced larval gizzard shad biomass, but the overall nutrient addition effect was greater than the sediment addition effect (+N ~ +N+S > +S > C). We observed differential effects of nutrient and sediment inputs on larval survival, growth and condition factors. 4. The enhancement of fish biomass in elevated nutrients (+N, +N+S) relative to control conditions was associated with improved gizzard shad survival and not greater growth. The enhancement of fish biomass in the elevated sediment treatment (+S) relative to the control conditions was caused by an increase in survival that more than compensated for a negative effect of sediment addition on growth. 5. Our findings support the recommendation that reservoir management practices must consider the links between land use practices and food web dynamics. Our results suggest that reduction of subsidies of nutrients and sediments to productive reservoirs would decrease survival of larval gizzard shad due to lower food availability. 相似文献

We examined feeding of blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus, and flathead catfish, Pylodictis olivaris, collected from floodplain lake, secondary (side) river channel, and main river channel habitats in the lower Mississippi
River (LMR), U.S.A. We described the feeding ecology of two large river catfish species within the context of whether off-channel
habitats in the LMR (i.e., floodplain lakes and secondary channels) potentially provided energetic benefits to these fishes
as purported in contemporary theory on the ecology of large rivers. We used diet composition and associated caloric densities
of prey consumed as indicators of energetic benefit to catfishes. Differences in diet among habitats were strong for blue
catfish, but weak for flathead catfish; consumed foods generally differed among habitats in caloric (energy) content. Caloric
densities of consumed foods were generally greatest in floodplain lakes, least in the main river channel, and intermediate
in secondary river channels. Strong between-year variation in diet was observed, but only for blue catfish. Blue catfish fed
disproportionately on lower-energy zebra mussels in the main river channel during 1997, and higher-energy chironomids and
oligochaetes in floodplain lakes during 1998. Results suggested that although off-channel habitats potentially provided greater
energetic return to catfishes in terms of foods consumed, patterns of feeding and subsequent energy intake may vary annually.
Energetic benefits associated with off-channel habitats as purported under contemporary theory (e.g., the ‘flood-pulse concept’)
may not be accrued by catfishes every year in the LMR. 相似文献

Synopsis The Virgin River, a major tributary of the lower Colorado River, contains a unique, though impoverished, native ichthyofauna (six species) that is largely intact despite the introduction of exotic fishes (13 species) and alterations of the river. The main conclusions of the study are: (1) The longitudinal distribution pattern of the native species does not follow theoretical expectations of a downstream increase in species richness; (2) for the size of the basin (>15,000 km2), the native ichthyofauna is extremely depauperate; and (3) most of the exotic fish are not established in the river, but persist through repeated invasions from downstream reservoirs. 相似文献

赤水河是长江上游右岸一级支流,为长江上游珍稀特有鱼类国家级自然保护区的重要组成部分。为了了解赤水河鱼类资源现状,于2007年4-10月在赤水河流域进行了鱼类资源调查。在干、支流共51个采样点采集了鱼类标本;对茅台镇、赤水市和合江县三个江段的渔获物进行了统计和分析。共采集到鱼类119种(亚种),隶属于5目16科75属。其中25种为该水域的新记录;34种为长江上游特有鱼类,尤其是宽唇华缨鱼(Sinocrossocheilus labiatus)仅分布于赤水河。在上、中、下游分别采集到鱼类36、61和100种。宽鳍鱲(Zacco platypus)、中华倒刺鲃(Spinibarbus sinensis)、光泽黄颡鱼(Pelteobagrus nitidus)、张氏(Hemiculter tchangi)和蛇鮈(Saurogobio dabryi)为赤水河中主要的经济鱼类,同时,各江段渔获物的组成也存在一定的差别。本研究表明,赤水河流域鱼类种类相对丰富,但过度捕捞和涉水活动导致鱼类资源出现了一定程度的衰减。 相似文献

Four ecological zones of the Gambia River were sampled during four different hydrologic seasons for determination of microbial, nutrient, and physical parameters. A Greco-Latin Square experimental design was used to define the particular transect, station, depth, and tide/time-of-day of samples taken. Ranges of total bacterioplankton densities (106 cells/ml) were similar to those of tropical and temperate environments. Numbers of free bacteria were similar temporally, whereas attached bacteria numbers were greater during periods of high stream flows when suspended solids concentrations were higher. Free bacteria were usually twice as numerous in the freshwater zones than in the estuarine zones. Attached bacterial densities were approximately four times greater in the estuarine zones than in the freshwater zones. Uptake of3H-glucose on both a sample volume and per-cell basis increased from the early stages of the flood (6.95±SE 1.37 ng/liter/hour and 3.8 pg/hour/106 cells, respectively) and reached observed annual maximums during the dry season (21.01±SE 3.05 ng/ liter/hour and 13.0 pg/hour/106 cells, respectively). Spatially,3H-glucose uptake per sample volume and per cell was highest in the upper river zone and lowest in the lower estuary zone. The lower estuary zone consistently acted out of concert with the other river zones in terms of3H-glucose and14C-bicarbonate uptake. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that free and attached bacterioplankton densities were not homogeneous among transects, stations, depths, and tide/time-of-day at the different zones during the four hydrologic seasons. The results suggested that heterotrophy overshadowed autotrophy in the river and that the bacterial abundance, distribution, and glucose uptake activity in this tropical floodplain river were greatly influenced by the annual flood and the presence of extensive mangrove forests in the estuary. 相似文献

Longitudinal and seasonal distributions of Plecoptera species were examined along the Chubut River in the Patagonian Precordillera
and Plateau, Argentina. Chubut River (>1000 km) is the largest river in the area and the hydrological regime is modified in
the lower section by an artificial reservoir (Florentino Ameghino Dam). Quantitative samples were collected in 13 sites in
the higher, middle, and lower sections of the river basin. Sites were visited four times during 2004, and a total of nine
species and 5772 individuals were collected in the study. Plecoptera richness decreased dramatically from the headwaters to
the mouth of the river system. Two species, Antarctoperla michaelseni and Potamoperla myrmidon, were able to live below the impoundment but they were not abundant. Notoperlopsis femina and A. michaelseni abundances were higher in summer than in the other seasons, while Limnoperla jaffueli peaked in spring. Species–environmental relationships were examined using Canonical Correspondence Analysis and six independent
variables were identified as the major factors structuring stoneflies assemblages. First axis was highly related to environmental
variables reflecting the hydro-geological and land use gradients in the basin (conductivity, total suspended solids, periphyton

Effects of Landscape and Riparian Condition on a Fish Index of Biotic Integrity in a Large Southeastern Brazil River 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Environmental conditions of a large river in southeastern Brazil were assessed by evaluating fish assemblage structure (index
of biotic integrity, IBI), landscape use (forest, pasture, urban area, and tributary water) and riparian condition. A survey
of the 338 km-long middle reach of the Rio Paraiba do Sul, containing a large urban-industrial complex, was conducted in two
seasons: summer/wet and winter/dry. Fish were sampled with a standardized level of effort twice at seven sites, between March
2001 and April 2002, by gill nets, cast nets, sieves and seines. Riparian condition was evaluated by direct observations,
and land use maps were used to assess landscape condition of an 8 km2 buffer surrounding each site. IBI scores ranged from 5 to 36 (out of a possible range of 4–40), with lowest values at an
urban-industrial landscape, and highest scores upstream and downstream, indicating the river’s recovery capacity. The most
appropriate time to assess IBI was during the winter/dry period, when sampling was more effective and the IBI was more sensitive
to changes in environmental quality. Landscape use and riparian condition were correlated, and IBI was positively correlated
with % pasture, % tributary area, and riparian condition, but negatively correlated with % urban area. In some cases urban
areas eliminated riparian woody vegetation, destabilizing site physical habitat structure. 相似文献
