There is increasing interest in the use of trap crops as components of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Understanding the mechanisms underlying host plant preferences of herbivorous pests can lead to improved effectiveness and reliability of the trap crop. We investigated the behavioural and chemical ecology underlying the success of turnip rape, Brassica rapa, trap crops in protecting oilseed rape, Brassica napus, from the pollen beetle, Meligethes aeneus, which feeds in the flowers and lays its eggs in the buds causing yield loss. Using a semi-field arena bioassay, plant growth stage was found to be a major factor in the preference of this pest for B. rapa over B. napus. Plants at early-flowering growth stages were preferred over plants in the bud stage, irrespective of species. No preference was found when both species were flowering. As B. rapa develops faster than B. napus in the field, this could explain part of the mechanism of its success as a trap crop. However, B. rapa was preferred over B. napus when both species were in the bud stage, indicating some inherent preferences for B. rapa. Responses of M. aeneus in olfactometer tests to the odours of B. napus and B. rapa at the bud and flowering growth stages, reflected those of the semi-field arena bioassay. These behavioural responses can be explained by volatile compounds associated with the flowering stage. Phenylacetaldehyde, indole and (E,E)-α-farnesene were found to be present in air entrainment samples of both plant species at the flowering growth stage, but only in those of B. rapa at the bud stage. The former two compounds were behaviourally-active in olfactometer tests. These compounds are likely to be involved in host location by M. aeneus, and, at least partially, responsible for the attractiveness of B. rapa and its success as a trap crop to protect B. napus from this pest.

To examine how soil phosphorus status affects nitrogen fixation by the Casuarinaceae —Frankia symbiosis,Casuarina equisetifolia and two species ofAllocasuarina (A. torulosa andA. littoralis) inoculated or fertilized with KNO3 were grown in pots in an acid soil at 4 soil phosphate levels. InoculatedC. equisetifolia nodulated well by 12 weeks after planting and the numbers and weight of nodules increased markedly with phosphorus addition. Growth ofC. equisetifolia dependent on symbiotically fixed nitrogen was more sensitive to low levels of phosphorus (30 mg kg–1 soil) than was growth of seedings supplied with combined nitrogen; at higher levels of phosphorus, the growth response curves were similar for both nitrogen fertilized and inoculated plants. The interaction between phosphorus and nitrogen treatments (inoculated and nitrogen fertilized) demonstrated that there was a greater requirement of phosphorus for symbiotic nitrogen fixation than for plant growth when soil phosphorus was low.WithAllocasuarina species, large plant to plant variation in nodulation occurred both within pots and between replicates. This result suggests genetic variation in nodulation withinAllocasuarina species. Nodulation ofAllocasuarina species did not start until 16 weeks after planting and no growth response due toFrankia inoculation was obtained at the time of harvest. Addition of nitrogen starter is suggested to boost plant growth before the establishment of the symbiosis. Growth ofAllocasuarina species fertilized with nitrogen responded to increasing levels of phosphorus up to 90 mg P/kg soil after which it declined by 69% forA. littoralis. The decrease in shoot weight ofA. littoralis, A. torulosa, C. equisetifolia andC. cunninghamiana at high phosphorus was confirmed in a sand culture experiment, and may be atributable to phosphorus toxicity.

Colonization of sorghum by Macrophomina phaseolina in field plots was determined at nitrogen fertilization rates of 0, 56, 112, and 168 kg ha-1 in 1988 and 0, 84, 168, and 256 kg ha-1 in 1989. Above ground plant tissue and roots were sampled monthly to determine total nitrogen and percent colonization of root segments by natural inoculum. Root infection was not affected by nitrogen treatment, but was affected by growth stage and environment. High root infection occurred before reproductive development (growth stage 3) in 1988 and was associated with hot, dry weather early in the growing season. In 1989, when the weather was cool and wet, root infection began after reproductive development (growth stage 4). The effect of nitrogen treatments on lesion length was determined in sorghum stalks artificially inoculated with M. phaseolina. Lesion lengths were significantly affected by both nitrogen treatments and growth stage. Lesions were significantly longer with all nitrogen treatments at growth stage 9 than with the no-nitrogen treatment, and lesions tended to increase with increased levels of nitrogen fertilization. Significant increases in lesion length occurred between growth stages 5, 7, and 9 in 1988 and between 7 and 9 in 1989. This study demonstrates that nitrogen fertilization affects colonization of sorghum stalks but not root infection by M. phaseolina.

Summary Little is known about the effects of enriched CO2 environments, which are anticipated to exist in the next century, on natural plant-insect herbivore interactions. To begin to understand such effects on insect growth and survival, I reared both early and penultimate instar larvae of the buckeye, Junonia coenia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), on leaves from one of their major hostplants, plantain, Plantago lanceolata (Plantaginaceae), grown in either ambient (350 PPM) or high (700 PPM) CO2 atmospheres. Despite consuming more foliage, early instar larvae experienced reduced growth on high CO2-grown compared to ambient CO2-grown leaves. However, survivorship of early instar larvae was unaffected by the CO2 treatment. Larval weight gain was positively correlated with the nitrogen concentration of the plant material and consumption was negatively correlated with foliar nitrogen concentration, whereas neither larval weight gain nor consumption were significantly correlated with foliar water or allelochemical concentrations. In contrast, penultimate instar larvae had similar growth rates on ambient and high CO2-grown leaves. Significantly higher consumption rates on high CO2-grown plants enabled penultimate instar larvae to obtain similar amounts of nitrogen in both treatments. These larvae grew at similar rates on foliage from the two CO2 treatments, despite a reduced efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) on the low nitrogen, high CO2-grown plants. However, nitrogen utilization efficiencies (NUE) were unaffected by CO2 treatment. Again, for late instar larvae, consumption rates were negatively correlated with foliar nitrogen concentrations, and ECI was also very highly correlated with leaf nitrogen; foliar water or allelochemical concentrations did not affect either of these parameters. Differences in growth responses of early and late instar larvae to lower nitrogen, high-CO2 grown foliage may be due to the inability of early instar larvae to efficiently process the increased flow of food through the gut caused by additional consumption of high CO2 foliage.

Elevated levels of tropospheric ozone and their effects on plants have been studied for a great number of years. Ozone is a gaseous pollutant and acts as a phytotoxin. Even though ozone is known to change the physiology of plants, little attention has been given to the indirect effects of ozone on plant-insect interactions. This paper addresses this question by investigating the interactive effects of ozone and plant genotype on insects. Lines of rapid-cycling Brassica rapa (L.) selected for their contrasting sensitivity to ozone and Pieris brassicae (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) were used as a model system. The effect of differences in ozone sensitivity and ozone fumigation on the plant's carbon and nitrogen pools, the feeding preference, and behaviour of P. brassicae larvae were investigated. The results show that the plant's susceptibility to ozone interacts in a complex way with ozone induced alterations in the suitability of the plant for the insect. Only the larval performance on the sensitive line was affected by ozone exposure. Biochemical changes in the resistant B. rapa line made the plant a better food source for the insects, since the digestibility of this plant was significantly higher than that of the sensitive line, and the larvae pupated more quickly and were heavier.

Understanding how host‐plant characteristics affect behavioral and physiological responses of insect herbivores is of considerable importance in the development of resistant crop germplasm. Feeding, oviposition preference, larval development, and oviposition behavior of the cabbage seedpod weevil, Ceutorhynchus obstrictus (Marsham) (= Ceutorhynchus assimilis Payk.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), were investigated on eight Brassicaceae species that differed in their glucosinolate profiles. The least preferred host plants for feeding and oviposition were the Sinapis alba L. lines while the Brassica carinata L. line was most preferred. Larval development occurred most rapidly on Brassica rapa L. and slowest on S. alba. Larval weight was highest on B. napus L. and lowest on S. alba. Total glucosinolate levels did not influence C. obstrictus larval growth or development; however high levels of specific glucosinolates such as p‐hydroxybenzyl and 3‐butenyl glucosinolate were associated with increased developmental time or reduced weight. The time required for oviposition behavioral events was measured on different host‐plant species: B. rapa, B. napus, B. napus×S. alba, B. tournefortii Gouan., B. juncea (L.) Czern, B. carinata, B. nigra (L.) Koch., and S. alba. The early steps in the sequence were completed faster on more susceptible host plants (B. carinata, B. napus, and B. rapa) than on relatively resistant ones (B. tournefortii and B. juncea). Females explored pods of B. nigra and S. alba, but oviposition occurred only rarely on these species. There was no significant difference in the location on the pod on which oviposition occurred among the different plant species. Mean eggs laid per female weevil were highest on the B. napus×S. alba hybrid and lowest on B. nigra and S. alba.

Genistein is the major root produced isoflavonoid inducer of nod genes in the symbiosis between B. japonicum and soybean plants. Reduction in the isoflavonoid content of the host plants has recently been suggested as a possible explanation for the inhibition of mineral nitrogen (N) on the establishment of the symbiosis. In order to determine whether genistein addition could overcome this inhibition, we incubated B. japonicum cells (strain 532C) with genistein. Mineral N (in the form of NH4NO3) was applied at 0, 20 and 100 kg ha-1. The experiments were conducted on both a sandy-loam soil and a clay-loam soil. Preincubation of B. japonicum cells with genistein increased soybean nodule number and nodule weight, especially in the low-N-containing sandy-loam soil and the low N fertilizer treatment. Plant growth and yield were less affected by genistein preincubation treatments than nitrogen assimilation. Total plant nitrogen content was increased by the two genistein preincubation treatments at the early flowering stage. At maturity, shoot and total plant nitrogen contents were increased by the 40 μM genistein preincubation treatment at the sandy-loam soil site. Total nitrogen contents were increased by the 20 μM genistein preincubation treatment only at the 0 and 20 kg ha-1 nitrate levels in clay-loam soil. Forty μM genistein preincubation treatment increased soybean yield on the sandy-loam soil. There was no difference among treatments for 100-seed weight. The results suggest that preincubation of B. japonicum cells with genistein could improve soybean nodulation and nitrogen fixation, and at least partially overcome the inhibition of mineral nitrogen on soybean nodulation and nitrogen fixation. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The possible effects of environmental stress on plant chemistry that are important to herbivorous insects were examined by growing a wild crucifer, Erysimum cheiranthoides, under different nutrient regimes. Oviposition by the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae, is thought to be affected by the balance of glucosinolates (stimulants) and cardenolides (deterrents) at the surface of leaves. E. cheiranthoides seedlings were provided with three levels of nitrogen and two levels of sulfur for a period of 15 days before analysis of semiochemicals in whole leaf tissue and at the surface of the foliage. The ratio of cardenolides to glucosinolates in the plants at elevated C/N ratios followed the carbon/nutrient balance hypothesis. However, a high nitrogen supply enhanced biomass production to the extent that concentrations of secondary compounds were unchanged or reduced. The concentration of glucosinolates (glucoiberin and glucocheirolin) at the surface was positively related to whole tissue levels. However, cardenolide (erysimoside and erychroside) concentrations, which were highest in leaf tissue of nitrogen-deficient plants, had the lowest surface levels on foliage of these plants. Possible reasons for differential expression of cardenolides and glucosinolates in a plant as a result of nutrient deficiency are discussed.

In this study we assessed the inherent relative growth rate (RGR) under controlled environment conditions of 10 contrasting Acacia species from semi-arid and mesic environments. For several of the species, compound pinnate leaves produced early in the seedling stage, were gradually replaced by phyllodes (expanded petioles that form simple lamina). Other species either did not form phyllodes, or only did so to a minor degree by the end of the study. Phyllode production was dominant in the four slow-growing Acacia species from semi-arid environments (A. aneura, A. colei, A. coriacea and A. tetragonophylla), with leaf production being exclusive or dominant in five (A. dealbata, A. implexa, A. mearnsii, A. melanoxylon and A. irrorata) of the six faster-growing species from mesic environments. The exception was A. saligna which was fast growing but did produce phyllodes. From a carbon economy perspective, slow growth in the semi-arid species was not associated with lower net assimilation rates or less plant mass allocated to foliage. Rather, the primary factor associated with their slow growth was a smaller foliage area per unit foliage mass. This was true for comparisons based on the mean over all harvests or at set plant masses. The production of phyllodes by the semi-arid species substantially reduced foliage area per unit foliage mass, as this was lower for phyllodes than leaves in all species. To assess the impact that phyllode production had on ontogenetic changes in RGR, we modelled the situation where only leaves were formed. This analysis showed that changing from leaves to phyllodes substantially reduced the RGR. There was little difference in plant nitrogen concentration or the ratio of foliage nitrogen to plant nitrogen between the species. This resulted in foliage nitrogen productivity (dry mass gain per unit foliage nitrogen and time) being directly proportional to foliage area per unit foliage mass between species. We concluded that a smaller foliage area per unit foliage mass and phyllode production are the primary factors associated with lower RGR in contrasting Acacia species.

Putrescine effect on nitrate reductase activity, organic nitrogen and protein contents, and plant growth under Cd or Pb (0.1 – 2 mM) and salinity (5 and 100 mM NaCl) stresses was examined in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. cv. RH-30) seedlings. Cd or Pb and salinity inhibited nitrate reductase activity and decreased organic nitrogen and protein contents in leaf tissue. The increased nitrate reductase activity induced by putrescine was correlated with increased organic nitrogen and protein contents and growth of plants.

Summary A study of the effects of defoliation by insects on the chemistry of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), and on the performance of Panolis flammea (Lepidoptera; Noctuidae) larvae, was carried out in a forest in northwest Scotland I year after a severe outbreak of P. flammea had caused extensive defoliation. Larval weight and survival were not significantly different on trees that had experienced different levels of defoliation in 1986. The nitrogen and tannin content of current and previous years' pine needles was not significantly affected by defoliation (although both were slightly greater in the foliage of defoliated trees). Phosphorus content of young pine foliage was lower (but not significantly lower except on one occasion) on heavily defoliated trees. On all sampling occasions, however, the nitrogen: phosphorus ratio was significantly higher on heavily defoliated trees. There were large differences in monoterpene composition of the previous year's shoots associated with defoliation intensity, but these differences had largely disappeared in the new growth. The results are discussed in relation to other studies on the effects of insect damage on plant chemistry and insect performance and in relation to the abundance of P. flammea in Scotland.

The morphology and meiotic behaviour of pollen mother cells were studied in hybrids involvingLeymus multicaulis (2n = 28) ×Psathyrostachys huashanica (2n = 14),L. multicaulis ×P. juncea (2n = 14), andL. secalinus (2n = 28) ×L. multicaulis. Chromosome pairing was almost identical in theL. multicaulis ×P. huashanica, andL. multicaulis ×P. juncea hybrids, in which it averaged 7.30 univalents + 6.69 bivalents + 0.096 trivalents and 7.48 univalents + 6.75 bivalents, respectively. The meiotic pairing in the two hybrids indicated that oneL. multicaulis genome was closely homologous with theP. huashanica andP. juncea genomes. BothP. huashanica andP. juncea are possibly donors of oneL. multicaulis genome. Chromosome pairing in theL. secalinus ×L. multicaulis hybrid averaged 4.49 univalents + 11.71 bivalents + 0.02 trivalents, indicating that the genomes ofL. multicaulis andL. secalinus are to some degree homologous. However, they are sufficiently differentiated to insure species distinctness.

Seedlings of two Mediterranean plants, the slow-growing, evergreen sclerophyll Ceratonia siliqua L. and the fast growing drought semi-deciduous Phlomis fruticosa L., were grown for one year in the field at ambient or ambient plus supplemental UV-B radiation (equivalent to a 15% ozone depletion) and two levels of applied fertilizers (NPK). The effects on growth, morphological, anatomical and physiological parameters were measured at final plant harvest. Additional nutrients increased leaf nitrogen, improved growth and reduced the root/shoot ratio in both plants, yet these effects were more pronounced in the fast growing P. fruticosa. A nutrient-induced increase in chlorophyll content was also observed in this plant. The growth responses to UV-B radiation were different for the two species. Growth in C. siliqua was not affected by UV-B radiation at both nutrient levels and the same was true for P. fruticosa at low nutrients. However, at the high nutrient level, supplemental UV-B radiation improved growth in P. fruticosa, indicating a strong interaction between the treatments. Photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency, methanol-extractable UV-B absorbing capacity, total phenolics and tannins were not affected by either treatment in both plants. It is concluded that nutrient levels can strongly modify the UV-B radiation effects on growth of P. fruticosa. We presume that this may be correlated to the fast growing habit of this species.

Differential accumulation of plant defence metabolites has been suggested to have important ecological consequence in the context of plant–insect interactions. Feeding of generalist pests on Brassica juncea showed a distinct pattern with selective exclusion of leaf margins which are high in glucosinolates. Molecular basis of this differential accumulation of glucosinolates could be explained based on differential expression profile of BjuMYB28 homologues, the major biosynthetic regulators of aliphatic glucosinolates, as evident from quantitative real‐time PCR and promoter:GUS fusion studies in allotetraploid B. juncea. Constitutive overexpression of selected BjuMYB28 homologues enhanced accumulation of aliphatic glucosinolates in B. juncea. Performance of two generalist pests, Helicoverpa armigera and Spodoptera litura larvae, on transgenic B. juncea plants were poor compared to wild‐type plants in a no‐choice experiment. Correlation coefficient analysis suggested that weight gain of H. armigera larvae was negatively correlated with gluconapin (GNA) and glucobrassicanapin (GBN), whereas that of S. litura larvae was negatively correlated with GNA, GBN and sinigrin (SIN). Our study explains the significance and possible molecular basis of differential distribution of glucosinolates in B. juncea leaves and shows the potential of overexpressing BjuMYB28 for enhanced resistance of Brassica crops against the tested generalist pests.

Summary Attempts were made to obtain intergeneric hybrids between Diplotaxis siifolia, a wild species, and cultivars of Brassica (B. campestris, B. juncea, and B. napus). The crosses showed unilateral incompatibility. When the wild species was used as female parent, pollen germination and pollen tube growth were normal, but hybrid seeds aborted due to post-fertilization barriers. Reciprocal crosses (cultivars as female parent) showed strong pre-fertilization barriers; although pollen grains showed germination, pollen tubes failed to enter the stigma. Hybrids were realized in two of the crosses, D. siifolia x B. juncea and D. siifolia x B. napus, through ovary culture. The hybrids were multiplied in vitro by multiplication of axillary shoots, or somatic embryogenesis. Detailed studies were carried out on the hybrid D. siifolia x B. juncea. F1 hybrids had shrivelled anthers and were pollen sterile. Amphiploids of this hybrid showed 60% pollen fertility and produced seeds upon self-pollination as well as backcross pollination with the pollen of B. juncea.

Effects and interactions of varying CaSO4 and NaCl levels on growth and nitrogen fixation ofLeucaena leucocephala K8 were examined. Leucaena was grown in nutrient solution at four levels of CaSO4 (0.5, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 mM) and NaCl (1, 25, 50 and 100 mM) in randomized blocks with five replications. While NaCl significantly reduced plant growth, additions of CaSO4 increased plant height, leaf number, and biomass of salt treated plants. For the nonsaline treatments, high CaSO4 levels slightly depressed growth, which contradicts suggestions that Leucaena has a high calcium requirement. A significant calcium/sodium interaction was not seen for nodule number or weight. Nodule number was significantly depressed by 100 mM NaCl and nodule weight of the salt stressed plants significantly increased as CaSO4 concentration increased from 0.5 to 2.5 mM. Effects of NaCl and CaSO4 on nitrogen content of plant parts were inconclusive. The promotion of Leucaena salinity tolerance by addition of CaSO4 may be attributed to the effect of calcium in maintaing the selective permeability of membranes.

Nodulation and the subsequent nitrogen fixation are important factors that determine the productivity of legumes. The beneficial effects of nodulation can be enhanced when rhizobial inoculation is combined with plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). The PGPB strain Bacillus thuringiensis-KR1, originally isolated from the nodules of Kudzu vine (Pueraria thunbergiana), was found to promote plant growth of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and lentil (Lens culinaris L.) under Jensen’s tube, growth pouch and non-sterile soil, respectively, when co-inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum-PR1. Coinoculation with B. thuringiensis-KR1 (at a cell density of 106 c.f.u. ml−1) provided the highest and most consistent increase in nodule number, shoot weight, root weight, and total biomass, over rhizobial inoculation alone. The enhancement in nodulation due to coinoculation was 84.6 and 73.3% in pea and lentil respectively compared to R. leguminosarum-PR1 treatment alone. The shoot dry-weight gains on coinoculation with variable cell populations of B. thuringiensis-KR1 varied from 1.04 to 1.15 times and 1.03 to 1.06 times in pea and lentil respectively, while root dry weight ratios of coinoculated treatments varied from 0.98 to 1.14 times and 1.08 to 1.33 times in pea and lentil respectively, those of R. leguminosarum-PR1 inoculated treatment at 42 days of plant growth. While cell densities higher than 106 c.f.u. ml−1 had an inhibitory effect on nodulation and plant growth, lower inoculum levels resulted in decreased cell recovery and plant growth performance. The results of this study indicate the potential of harnessing endophytic bacteria of wild legumes for improving the nodulation and growth of cultivated legumes.

Summary We investigated the effects of nitrogen fertilization upon the concentrations of nitrogen, condensed tannin and phenolic glycosides of young quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) leaves and the quality of these leaves as food for larvae of the large aspen tortrix (Choristoneura conflictana), a Lepidopteran that periodically defoliates quaking aspen growing in North America. Nitrogen fertilization resulted in decreased concentrations of condensed tannin and phenolic glycosides in aspen leaves and an increase in their nitrogen concentration and value as food for the large aspen tortrix. These results indicate that plant carbon/nutrient balance influences the quality of aspen leaves as food for the large aspen tortrix in two ways, by increasing the concentrations of positive factors (e.g. nitrogen) and decreasing the concentrations of negative factors (eg. carbon-based secondary metabolites) in leaves. Addition of purified aspen leaf condensed tannin and a methanol extract of young aspen leaves that contained condensed tannin and phenolic glycosides to artificial diets at high and low levels of dietary nitrogen supported this hypothesis. Increasing dietary nitrogen increased larval growth whereas increasing the concentrations of condensed tannin and phenolic glycosides decreased growth. Additionally, the methanol extract prevented pupation. These results indicate that future studies of woody plant/insect defoliator interactions must consider plant carbon/nutrient balance as a potentially important control over the nutritional value of foliage for insect herbivores.
