Predation risk and the structure of freshwater zooplankton communities   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Summary Many predators inflict substantial mortality on their prey. The prey respond to these selective pressures with changes in their spatial and temporal overlap with the predator (density risk responses), or with changes in their vulnerability to the predator (prey vulnerability responses). Here we develop a simple predation model that permits quantification of the basic response types of the prey in nature. We then test the hypothesis that prey response will be proportional to the intensity of the predation mortality relative to all other sources of mortality and decreased natality acting on the prey. A significant regression relationship is obtained for the prey vulnerability response but not for any of the density risk responses. The individual response values and regression statistics are used to interpret the relative importance of the different response types and to assess the predator's influence on prey community structure.Supported by Lehigh University Environmental Studies Center  相似文献

The enlarged (major) claw of male fiddler crabs is used in contestsover breeding burrows and is waved to attract females. We recentlydiscovered that males of the red-jointed fiddler crab, Uca minax,also use the claw to kill smaller-sized fiddler crabs, U. pugnaxand U. pugilator, with which they co-occur in Atlantic coastsalt marshes. Large U. minax males use walking legs or the enlargedclaw to capture prey feeding on moist sand flats. On sand flats,small U. minax males and females are much less common than largemales, suggesting that large males move onto sand flats to seekprey. Males of prey species use the major claw against attackingpredators and, consequently, are more likely than females toescape. In laboratory experiments, large U. minax males weremore likely to attack and kill small-clawed males and femalesthan large-clawed males, consistent with a preference for morevulnerable, less threatening prey. The size of the major clawis a positive allometric function of body size. The allometricfunction varies little among species. Also, the mechanical advantageand indices of closing speed and closing force of the majorclaw, when corrected for body size, are not consistently greaterin U. minax relative to prey species. Thus, predation by U.minax males may reflect the opportunity afforded by larger bodysize and positive allometric growth, which result in a majorclaw that is more massive than the prey it is directed against.  相似文献

Predators can have positive impacts on their prey through such mechanisms as nutrient mineralization and prey transport. These positive feedbacks have the potential to change predictions based on food web theory, such as the assertion that enrichment is destabilizing. We present a model of a simple food web, consisting of a resource, a consumer, and its predator. We assume that the predator has a direct positive effect on the consumer, by increasing the rate at which the consumer acquires resources. We consider two cases: the feedback strength is a saturating function of predator density, or it is proportional to the encounter rate between predators and prey. In both cases, the positive feedback is stabilizing, delaying or preventing the onset of oscillations due to enrichment. Positive feedback can introduce an Allee effect for the predator population, yielding multiple stable equilibria. Strong positive feedback can yield counterintuitive results such as a transient increase in consumer density following the introduction of predators, and a decrease in the resource pool following enrichment.  相似文献

Life-history theory predicts that an individual should reduce its reproductive efforts by laying a smaller clutch size when high risk of nest predation reduces the value of current reproduction. Evidence in favour of this 'nest predation hypothesis', however, is scarce and based largely on correlative analyses. Here, we manipulated perceived risk of nest predation in the Siberian jay Perisoreus infaustus using playback involving a mixture of calls by corvid nest predators in the vicinity of nest sites. In response to being exposed to this acoustic cue simulating increased risk of nest predation, the jays chose a nest site offering more protective covering and reduced clutch size. This is the first experimental demonstration of clutch size adjustment and nest site selection as a result of phenotypic plasticity in an open nesting passerine reflecting a facultative response to the perceived risk of nest predation.  相似文献

Frequency analysis by the mammalian cochlea is traditionally thought to occur via a hydrodynamically coupled ‘travelling wave’ along the basilar membrane. A persistent difficulty with this picture is how sharp tuning can emerge. This paper proposes, and models, a supplementary or alternative mechanism: it supposes that the cochlea analyses sound by setting up standing waves between parallel rows of outer hair cells. In this scheme, multiple cells mutually interact through positive feedback of wave-borne energy. Analytical modelling and numerical evaluation presented here demonstrate that this can provide narrow-band frequency analysis. Graded cochlear tuning will then rely on the distance between rows becoming greater as distance from the base increases (as exhibited by the actual cochlea) and on the wave’s phase velocity becoming slower. In effect, tuning is now a case of varying the feedback delay between the rows, and a prime candidate for a wave exhibiting suitably graded phase velocity—a short-wavelength ‘squirting wave’—is identified and used in the modelling. In this way, resonance between rows could supply both amplification and high Q, characteristics underlying the ‘cochlear amplifier’—the device whose action has long been evident to auditory science but whose anatomical basis and mode of operation are still obscure.  相似文献

The success or not of ladybirds as biological control agents is dependent on both their foraging behaviour and their individual survival rates. The former is a function of the habitats they utilise; the latter, a consequence of their reproductive strategy. Egg clustering was investigated in two ladybird species, Aphidecta obliterata, a conifer specialist, and Adalia bipunctata, an arboreal woodland generalist. The effect of oviposition substrate (filter papers vs. spruce needles) on clutch size and oviposition preference was also tested. Adalia bipunctata laid significantly more eggs than A. obliterata. The size of egg clusters laid by the two coccinellids varied between species and substrate types. Adalia bipunctata laid larger egg clusters than A. obliterata, with batches reaching a maximum size of 32 eggs on spruce and 41 eggs on paper, while those of A. obliterata contained a maximum of 5 eggs on spruce and 9 eggs on paper. Of the clusters laid by A. obliterata, 18.6% of those on paper and 21.4% of those on spruce contained only a single egg, whereas a minimum of two eggs per cluster were laid by A. bipunctata. Smaller clusters were laid on the spruce cuttings by both species when compared with those laid on the filter paper, but A. obliterata laid significantly more eggs on spruce than on the filter paper (77% vs. 23%), whilst A. bipunctata laid significantly more eggs on the filter paper (91%). It is suggested that coccinellid eggs are more likely to be washed off spruce needles than broad leaves and that, by laying smaller egg clusters on spruce, A. obliterata reduces this risk. Adalia bipunctata usually lays its eggs on the underside of broad leaved trees and thus does not face this risk and thus can lay larger egg clusters. No differences in cannibalism rates were found between the two species. These findings have implications for the use of ladybirds as biological control agents in spruce forests.  相似文献

The role of sexual selection in determining the nature and direction of sexual size dimorphism may depend upon the timing of sexual selection, and this may also influence the variation in male size. For example, selection through sperm competition favours smaller males in the highly sexually size dimorphic orb-weaving spider Nephila edulis , whereas larger males are better able to exclude their smaller rivals from the central hub of the web where mating takes place. We investigate experimentally the role of body size and hub tenure in determining male fertilization success when males of different sizes compete for a single female over a 24-h period that includes a period of darkness. Our results confirm that small and large males obtain similar paternity share but that, in contrast with previous studies, hub tenure does not translate into greater paternity share. Unexpectedly, smaller males are at greater risk of postmating sexual cannibalism than larger males, suggesting that natural selection through sexual cannibalism may place a lower limit on male size.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 355–363.  相似文献

Adherens junctions physically link two cells at their contact interface via extracellular binding between cadherin molecules and intracellular interactions between cadherins and the actin cytoskeleton. Cadherin and actomyosin cytoskeletal dynamics are regulated reciprocally by mechanical and chemical signals, which subsequently determine the strength of cell-cell adhesions and the emergent organization and stiffness of the tissues they form. However, an understanding of the integrated system is lacking. We present a new mechanistic computational model of intercellular junction maturation in a cell doublet to investigate the mechanochemical cross talk that regulates adherens junction formation and homeostasis. The model couples a two-dimensional lattice-based simulation of cadherin dynamics with a reaction-diffusion representation of the reorganising actomyosin network through its regulation by Rho signalling at the intracellular junction. We demonstrate that local immobilization of cadherin induces cluster formation in a cis-less-dependent manner. We then recapitulate the process of cell-cell contact formation. Our model suggests that cortical tension applied on the contact rim can explain the ring distribution of cadherin and actin filaments (F-actin) on the cell-cell contact of the cell doublet. Furthermore, we propose and test the hypothesis that cadherin and F-actin interact like a positive feedback loop, which is necessary for formation of the ring structure. Different patterns of cadherin distribution were observed as an emergent property of disturbances of this positive feedback loop. We discuss these findings in light of available experimental observations on underlying mechanisms related to cadherin/F-actin binding and the mechanical environment.  相似文献

We describe a model for the alternation between two activities. Each activity has an associated tendency, and the model performs the activity with the higher tendency. The tendencies depend on both negative and positive feedback from the performance of the activities. In general the behaviour of the model is periodic, with bout, durations that depend on the ratio of the maximum response rates. Increasing the maximum rate of a behaviour increases the magnitude of its bouts. The behaviour of the model is similar in several respects to the model developed by Ludlow (1980), which suggests that it may not be easy to distinguish between various models of feeding and drinking behaviour.  相似文献

The fitness costs of egg loss for Seychelles warblers (Acrocephalus sechellensis)on Cousin Island are considerable because warblers have a single-eggclutch and no time to lay a successful replacement clutch. Onthe islands of Cousin and Cousine, with equal densities of Seychellesfodies (Foudia sechellarum), nearly 75% of artificial eggs placedin artificial nests were predated by fodies after 3 days. OnAride Island with no fodies present, loss of artificial eggswas not observed. Female warblers incubate the clutch, and malewarblers guard the clutch when females are absent. Deterrenceof fodies by male warblers is efficient: loss rate of eggs fromunattended warbler nests was seven times as high as from attendednests, and the more nest guarding, the lower the egg loss andthe higher the hatching success. Egg loss is independent ofthe amount of incubation by females. There is no trade-off betweenincubating and foraging by females. Nest guarding competes withforaging by males, and this trade-off has a more pronounced effecton egg loss when food availability is low. The transfer of breeding pairsfrom Cousin to either Cousine with egg-predating fodies or toAride without fodies allowed us to experimentally investigatethe presumed trade-off between nest guarding and foraging. OnCousine, individual males spent the same amount of time nestguarding and foraging as on Cousin, and egg loss was similarand inversely related to time spent nest guarding as on Cousin.Males that guarded their clutch on Cousin did not guard theclutch on Aride but allocated significantly more time to foragingand gained better body condition. Loss of warbler eggs on Aridewas not observed. Time allocation to incubating and foragingby individual females before and after both translocations remainedthe same.  相似文献

Climate change is expected to increase fire activity and woody plant encroachment in arctic and alpine landscapes. However, the extent to which these increases interact to affect the structure, function and composition of alpine ecosystems is largely unknown. Here we use field surveys and experimental manipulations to examine how warming and fire affect recruitment, seedling growth and seedling survival in four dominant Australian alpine shrubs. We found that fire increased establishment of shrub seedlings by as much as 33‐fold. Experimental warming also doubled growth rates of tall shrub seedlings and could potentially increase their survival. By contrast, warming had no effect on shrub recruitment, postfire tussock regeneration, or how tussock grass affected shrub seedling growth and survival. These findings indicate that warming, coupled with more frequent or severe fires, will likely result in an increase in the cover and abundance of evergreen shrubs. Given that shrubs are one of the most flammable components in alpine and tundra environments, warming is likely to strengthen an existing feedback between woody species abundance and fire in these ecosystems.  相似文献

Recent experiments on ants and slime moulds have assessed the degree to which they make rational decisions when presented with a number of alternative food sources or shelter. Ants and slime moulds are just two examples of a wide range of species and biological processes that use positive feedback mechanisms to reach decisions. Here we use a generic, experimentally validated model of positive feedback between group members to show that the probability of taking the best of options depends crucially on the strength of feedback. We show how the probability of choosing the best option can be maximized by applying an optimal feedback strength. Importantly, this optimal value depends on the number of options, so that when we change the number of options the preference of the group changes, producing apparent "irrationalities". We thus reinterpret the idea that collectives show "rational" or "irrational" preferences as being a necessary consequence of the use of positive feedback. We argue that positive feedback is a heuristic which often produces fast and accurate group decision-making, but is always susceptible to apparent irrationality when studied under particular experimental conditions.  相似文献

Summary I compare the relationship between bill size (depth) and body size among different taxa of seed-eating finches to test the hypothesis (Schluter, 1988a) that in habitats where seed-eating finches are vulnerable to predators, finches have larger bodies relative to their bill size. In support of this hypothesis, ground-foraging finches on continents (Emberizidae, Passeridae, Fringillidae), where predators are more common, have larger bodies relative to their bill sizes than do ground-foraging finches on islands (Emberizidae, Fringillidae). Ground-feeding finches on continents may also be more vulnerable to predators than tree- and shrub-foraging finches. As predicted, in North America, ground-feeding finches (Emberizinae) have larger bodies relative to their bill size than do tree- and shrub-foraging finches (Carduelinae). As a consequence of increased body size relative to bill size, both the range of possible bill sizes and potential seed sizes that can be eaten are reduced. Moreover, increased metabolic demands caused by larger body size may lessen the ability to specialize on a few seed types. These two factors reduce the potential for seed size partitioning. Consequently, vulnerability to predators may limit, and is inversely correlated with, seed size partitioning in seed-eating finch communities. The extent to which predation has influenced other bird communities may be considerable, and the patterns found by Schluter (1988a) and in this study indicate that future ecomorphological studies, especially on species that spend much of the day foraging, might profit by considering predator vulnerability as well as foraging behaviour.  相似文献

Cannibalistic interactions generally depend on the size relationship between cannibals and victims. In many populations, a large enough size variation to allow for cannibalism may not only develop among age‐cohorts but also within cohorts. We studied the implications of variation in hatching period length and initial cohort size for the emergence of cannibalism and bimodal size distributions within animal cohorts using a physiologically structured population model. We found that the development of size bimodality was critically dependent on hatching period length, victim density and the presence of a feedback via shared resources. Cannibals only gained enough energy from cannibalism to accelerate in growth when victim density was high relative to cannibal density at the onset of cannibalism. Furthermore, we found that the opportunity for early hatchers to initially feed on an unexploited resource increases the likelihood both for cannibalism to occur and size bimodality to develop. Once cannibals accelerated in growth relative to victims size bimodality, reduced victim numbers and relaxed resource competition resulted. Thus, in addition to that cannibals profited from cannibalism through energy extraction, their potential victims also benefited as the resource recovered due to cannibal thinning. To ensure recruitment success, it can be critical that a few individuals can accelerate in growth and reach a size large enough to escape size‐dependent predation and winter starvation. Hence, within‐cohort cannibalism may be a potentially important mechanism to explain recruitment variation especially for cannibalistic species in temperate climates with strong seasonality. However, the scope for size bimodality to develop as a result of cannibalism may be limited by low victim densities and size and food‐dependent growth rates.  相似文献
