Farmed eel cultured in recirculation systems in Denmark were found infected by Trichodina jadranica Raabe, 1958. Associations between parasite abundance and fish size was examined in 2 different production systems. In one system, stocked with relatively well-nourished eels (3 to 31 g), most of the parasites (66%) were found on the dorsal part on the skin and relatively few were found on the gills (approx. 8%). The infection level was significantly positively correlated both with fish weight and length. In the other system, stocked with relatively malnourished small eels (0.5 to 4 g), significantly more parasites (0.06 +/- 0.02 [SD]) were present on fish with a low condition factor than on fish with a higher condition factor (0.13 +/- 0.01 [SD]). In this eel stock the vast majority of the trichodines were found on the gills.  相似文献

This study reports light and electron microscopical aspects of a myxosporean found in the gills of the freshwater teleost Astyanax keithi Géry, Planquete & Le Bail, 1996 (family Characidae), collected from the estuarine region of the Amazon River, near Belém, Brazil. The prevalence of infection was 23%. In interlamellar spaces of the gills, ellipsoidal whitish cyst-like plasmodia structures were present, which contained spores. The spores had a spermatozoa-like appearance (47.8 +/- 0.71 microm in total length) with a fusiform body (15.2 +/- 0.77 pm in length, 5.7 +/- 0.71 microm in width and 4.2 +/- 0.31 microm in thickness), and each of the 2 valves presented a tapering tail (32.6 +/- 1.11 microm in length). The valves surrounded a binucleate sporoplasm cell and 2 polar capsules (5.0 +/- 0.13 microm in length, 1.5 +/- 0.07 microm in width) that contained 8 to 9 coils of the polar filament. In the sporoplasm, several unique sporoplasmosomes were visible. A synoptic table of spore measurements of known Brazilian Henneguya species is presented. The spores differed from those of previously described species. Based on spore morphology, it is concluded that this species belongs to the family Myxobolidae, genus Henneguya, and that it constitutes a new species: H. astyanax n. sp.  相似文献

Henneguya ghaffari Ali, 1999, described for the first time in Egypt, has been found on gills and intestine of Nile perch Lates niloticus L. from Chad and Senegal (Africa). It formed plasmodia which induced lesions of infected tissues. In fresh state, the spore body was ovoid and its size was 11.07 +/- 0.7 (range 11 to 13) x 7.7 +/- 0.4 (range 7 to 8) microm. The length of the caudal appendages was 44.2 +/- 1.7 (42 to 48) microm. The polar capsules were pyriform, of equal size, with the polar filament showing 4 coils, and measuring 3.17 +/- 0.1 (range 3 to 4) x 2.2 +/- 0.1 (range 1 to 2) microm. The total length of the spore was 55.73 +/- 1.7 (range 53 to 61) microm. At ultrastructural level, our results confirm that in Henneguya species, the sporoplasm is binucleate and the pansporaoblast is disporous.  相似文献

Morphometric examination was carried out on the gills and skin of wild and caged hatchery brown trout Salmo trutta fario in an acidic (pH 4.9 to 5.4; Al 203 to 250 microg l(-1)) and in a non-acidic (pH 6.7 to 7.0; Al 27 to 67 microg l(-1)) stream in the Vosges Mountains (NE France) to assess the sublethal effects of acidic water on the mucous cell response. The caged fish were randomly collected after 2, 4, 7 and 11 d and the wild fish were obtained by electrofishing. After 2 d, a reduction of both mucous cell (MC) number and size was observed in the gills of fish held in the acidic stream, suggesting a massive mucus discharge. Hyperplasia and hypertrophy of cells immediately followed this mucus secretion. In the same fish population, skin examination showed a slight and delayed decrease of MC number but a significant increase of cell size. The number of mucous cells of gills and skin was similar in both wild trout populations, whereas a significant MC hypertrophy was observed in the wild fish of the acidic stream. The present field experiment indicates that caged fish could be useful as early indicators of acidification. In addition, the examination of wild populations suggested the occurrence of adaptive mechanisms, information that might be of importance in the context of river recovery programs.  相似文献

A new myxosporean species is described from the fish Semaprochilodus insignis captured from the Amazon River, near Manaus. Myxobolus insignis sp. n. was located in the gills of the host forming plasmodia inside the secondary gill lamellae. The spores had a thick wall (1.5-2 microm) all around their body, and the valves were symmetrical and smooth. The spores were a little longer than wide, with rounded extremities, in frontal view, and oval in lateral view. They were 14.5 (14-15) microm long by 11.3 (11-12) microm wide and 7.8 (7-8) microm thick. Some spores showed the presence of a triangular thickening of the internal face of the wall near the posterior end of the polar capsules. This thickening could occur in one of the sides of the spore or in both sides. The polar capsules were large and equal in size surpassing the midlength of the spore. They were oval with the posterior extremity rounded, and converging anteriorly with tapered ends. They were 7.6 (7-8) microm long by 4.2 (3-5) microm wide, and the polar filament formed 6 coils slightly obliquely to the axis of the polar capsule. An intercapsular appendix was present. There was no mucous envelope or distinct iodinophilous vacuole.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption through gills and skin in relation to body weight was estimated in the air-breathing catfish, Clarias batrachus, under two experimental conditions, viz., (i) when access to air was allowed and (ii) when air-breathing was prevented. There was a positive correlation between VO2 (ml/hr) and body weight in both experimental conditions. Oxygen consumption (ml/hr) increased by a power of 0.869 when access to air was allowed whereas the power was slightly less (b = 0.841) when air-breathing was prevented. As the values for exponent (b) were less than 1.0, the weight specific VO2 (ml/kg/hr) decreased with increasing body weight. The decrease was more marked (b = - 0.180) in fishes which were not allowed air than in those where access to air was allowed (b = - 0.148). Under normal conditions of water and air-breathing the rate of VO2 (ml/kg/hr) via gills and skin from water ranged from 39.7 +/- 3.21 to 76.7 +/- 9.01 and this increased to 42.17 +/- 6.2 to 105.9 +/- 8.33 when air-breathing was prevented. The increase in the rate of VO2 was perhaps associated with the increase in the volume of water irrigating the gills per unit time.  相似文献

The histological and ultrastructural characteristics of a new species of Henneguya and the host reactions to infection by this species are reported. Henneguya caudalongula sp. n. was found in the inter and intralamellar regions of the gills of Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836) cultivated at Center for the Research and Management of Continental Fishing Resources located in the municipality of Pirassununga, state of S?o Paulo, Brazil. The plasmodia were white and round or ellipsoidal and measured 0.2 to 1 mm in length. The development of the parasite was asynchronous and the mature spores were fusiform, with a total length 71 +/- 1.4 microm, body length of 16.6 +/- 0.54 microm and width 4.6 +/- 0.2 microm. The caudal process was 52.6 +/- 1.5 microm long. The polar capsules were elongate (length 6.1 +/- 0.19 microm, width 1.6 +/- 0.15 microm) and of equal size. The polar filament was coiled in 10-11 turns. The prevalence of the parasite was 48.3% and did not vary significantly with the season or host size.  相似文献

Two species of Myxobolus are reported from the gills of Mugil cephalus collected at Goa, India: M. goensis n. sp. and M. parvus Shulman, 1962. Myxobolus goensis n. sp. forms digitiform or rounded plasmodia between the gill rakers. Their spores are oval in frontal view, with tapered anterior extremity, and lemon-shaped in lateral view, measuring 9.7 (9.5-10.5) microm in length, 6.6 (6-7.5) microm in width, and 5.2 (5-6) microm in thickness. The polar capsules are pyriform and unequal in size. The larger ones are 5.3 (4.5-6) microm long and 2.4 (2-3) microm wide; the smaller ones are 2.4 (2-3) microm long and 1.8 (1.5-2) microm wide. The polar filament forms five turns aligned perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the larger polar capsules. Within the smaller polar capsules the polar filament is difficult to observe and, apparently, forms three coils. The spores are distinctly different from other Myxobolus species infecting M. cephalus and other Mugil spp. Furthermore, the present material is also different from 204 Myxobolus species presenting differently sized polar capsules, representing nearly all the known species with this characteristic. The fact that only the M. cephalus specimens were infected among a sample of 206 fish specimens, comprising 27 different species, strongly suggests that this parasite is specific to M. cephalus.  相似文献

A new species of Myxosporea, Henneguya chydadea, is described parasitizing the gills of Astyanax altiparanae collected from a lake on Rio das Pedras farm near Campinas, state of S?o Paulo, Brazil. Of the fish examined, 88.3% had gills parasitized by myxosporeans. The prevalence of the parasite ranged from 80% in the spring and fall, 93% in the summer and 100% in the winter. The parasite induced the formation of white, oval-shaped cysts measuring 40-64 microm x 64-80 microm which deformed the gill lamellae, compressed the capillaries, and caused retraction of the neighboring lamellae. The mature spores were elongated and had two identical, parallel elongate polar capsules. Each capsule contained a polar filament with 9-10 turns. There was no mucous envelope or iodinophilous vacuole. Morphometric differences between this parasite and other species of the genus Henneguya indicated, that the parasite observed in A. altiparanae is a new species. This is the first report of a myxosporeanparasitizing A. altiparanae.  相似文献

The euryhaline, amphibious mangrove killifish Kryptolebias marmoratus is known to survive weeks out of water in moist environments. We tested the hypothesis that the skin is a site of osmo- and ionoregulation in K. marmoratus. We predicted that under terrestrial conditions, gill and skin remodeling would result in an enhanced role for skin and a diminished role for the gills in osmo- and ionoregulation. Fish were exposed to water-either freshwater (FW, 1‰) or hypersaline water (saltwater [SW], 45‰)-or air over a moist surface of FW or SW for 9 d and then recovered in water. When fish were emersed for 9 d, (22)Na and (3)H-H(2)O were exchanged across the cutaneous surface. Homeostasis of whole-body Cl(-) and water levels but not of Na(+) levels was maintained over 9 d in air. In air-exposed fish, there was a significant increase in the size of skin ionocytes (in SW), a decrease in the number of skin mucous cells (in SW), and an increase in the gill interlamellar cell mass relative to those of fish in water. Gill ionocytes were mostly embedded away from the external surface in air-exposed fish, but the number and size of ionocytes increased (in FW). Interestingly, skin ionocytes formed distinct clusters of 20-30 cells. The estimated number of ionocytes over the whole skin surface was comparable to that in the gills. Overall, the findings support the hypothesis that the skin is a site of osmo- and ionoregulation in K. marmoratus in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Reversible cellular and morphological changes to the skin and gills during air exposure probably enhanced the cutaneous contribution to ion and water balance.  相似文献

The characteristics of Myxobolus cuneus n. sp. and its relationship to the host Piaractus mesopotamicus are described based on light and electron microscopy and histological observations. Polysporic plasmodia measuring 20 microm to 2.1 mm in size were found in 63.3 % of the P. mesopotamicus examined. The parasite was found in the gall bladder, urinary bladder, gills, spleen, fins, head surface, liver and heart. Generative cells and disporoblastic pansporoblasts occurred along the periphery of the plasmodia, and mature spores were found in the internal region. The mature spores had a pear shaped body in frontal view, with a total length of 10.0 +/- 0.6 microm and a width of 5.1 +/- 0.3 microm (mean +/- SD). The spore wall was smooth with sutural folds. The polar capsules were elongated, were pear shaped, and equal in size (length 5.7 +/- 03 microm; width 1.7 +/- 0.2 microm), with the anterior ends close to each other. The polar filaments were tightly coiled in 8-9 turns perpendicular to the axis of the capsule. The plasmodia were always found in connective tissue (wall of the arterioles of the gill filaments, serous capsule of the gall bladder, middle layer and subepithelial connective tissue of the urinary bladder, connective tissue between the rays of the fins, subcutaneous tissue of the head surface and fibrous capsule spleen). The parasite caused important damage in the gills, where development occurred in the wall of gill filament arterioles; a mild macrophage infiltrate was also observed. In advanced developmental stages, the plasmodia caused deformation of the arteriole structure, with a reduction and, in some cases, obstruction of the lumen. The parasite was found throughout the period studied and its prevalence was unaffected by host size, season or water properties.  相似文献

Twenty sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax L. from a fish farm (floating cage) in Greece were examined for the presence of parasites. The gills of 7 (35%) fish were infected with adult female specimens of the parasitic copepod Lernanthropus kroyeri van Beneden, 1851, and the intensity of infection ranged from 1 to 24 parasites per host. The most infected portion of the gills appeared to be the primary lamellae. Erosion, desquamation and necrosis of the secondary lamellae were noticed near the site of copepod attachment; furthermore, the terminal claw of the second antennae lacerated tissue and vessels of infected gill. Parasitism by L. kroyeri affected the host's condition factor (mean +/- SE in uninfected vs parasitized; 1.88 +/- 0.04 vs 1.66 +/- 0.12; p < 0.05).  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to characterise European eel spermatozoa morphometrically, as a basis for future studies on the morphological effects of methods for sperm cryopreservation and sperm quality. This characterisation was carried out measuring several spermatozoa morphology parameters (head length, width, area and perimeter) by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in comparison with measurements developed in European eel spermatozoa with computer-assisted morphology analysis (ASMA). Spermatozoa head morphology showed differences in width (1.15+/-0.01 microm versus 1.12+/-0.01 microm), perimeter (14.68+/-0.13 microm versus 13.72+/-0.19 microm) and area (5.36+/-0.06 microm2 versus 1.12+/-0.01 microm2) for ASMA and SEM, respectively. When head length was evaluated, significant differences were found, being higher for SEM methodology (5.09+/-0.04 microm versus 4.29+/-0.03 microm). The curved and elongated spermatozoa head in eels means a problem for the ASMA system (Sperm Class Analyser), Morfo Version 1.1, Imagesp, Barcelona, Spain), causing an error in the length measurements. However, similar results were obtained by both techniques when spermatozoa head length was considered as the greater length between two points within the object (4.29+/-0.03 microm versus 4.31+/-0.04 microm for ASMA and SEM, respectively). In conclusion, this is one of the first applications of ASMA in fish and the first in this species, and confirms this system as a useful tool with wide applications in future fish spermatozoa studies. Width, perimeter and area could be used as parameters for the spermatozoa morphology evaluation, whereas the length requires a new programming of the Imagesp software.  相似文献

Somatolactin (SL) is a pituitary hormone present exclusively in fish that is involved in different physiological processes. The role of SL was evaluated in Cichlasoma dimerus (Teleostei, Perciformes) exposed for 10 days to a black and white background (BB and WB). Changes in alpha-melanophore stimulating hormone (alphaMSH) and melanin concentrating hormone (MCH) cells were also analyzed for comparison with SL. A melanin dispersing effect was observed in fish exposed to a BB, while a concentrating one was observed in those exposed to a WB. By Western blot, three SL-immunoreactive (ir) bands (32, 28 and 23.5 kD) were evidenced. Pituitary SL-ir levels were 2.66- and 2.67-fold greater in the 32 Kd and 28 kD bands, respectively, in BB fish compared with those of WB fish. The SL-ir 23.5 Kd band was not included in the analysis because of its unknown identity. In addition, SL-ir cell number and area were significantly higher in the BB condition (BB 22.73+/-1.46, WB 7.37+/-0.54 and BB 27.39+/-1.00 microm2; WB: 16.61+/-0.65 microm2). No significant differences were observed in the number of the hypothalamic MCH-ir neurons. However, a significant difference was observed in their nuclear area (BB 11.61+/-0.42 microm2, WB 17.80+/-0.84 microm2). alphaMSH-ir cells showed a marked increased in number (BB 35.96+/-1.22, WB 24.36+/-1.04), but no significant differences were observed in the cell area. In conclusion, this study presented clear evidence towards a possible involvement of SL in the adaptation to background colors in teleost together with alphaMSH and MCH.  相似文献

The formation and persistence of DNA adducts in liver, intestinal mucosa, gills and brain of juvenile northern pike (Esox lucius) following oral exposure to benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF) and 7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazol (DBC) were analysed by 32P-postlabelling. The dosage was 25 micromol/kg body weight of each substance, administered on 5 occasions with an interval of 12-14 days. Sampling was carried out 9 days after the second treatment, and 9, 16, 33 and 78 days after the fifth treatment. Pikes were also fed with the substances singly for comparison of adduct patterns. A complex pattern of adducts was detected in all examined tissues from fish treated with the mixture. Total adduct levels were highest in intestine (347+/-17.4 nmol adducts/mol nucleotides, mean+/-SE), followed by liver (110+/-9.3), gills (69+/-6) and brain (14+/-4.2). In pike treated with BaP alone, one major adduct was detected in all examined tissues. This BaP-adduct made up approximately 50% of the total amount of adducts in the brain. Corresponding values in liver, intestine and gills were 23, 31 and 34%, respectively. One relatively weak BkF-adduct and at least 10 different DBC-adducts were detected in all analysed tissues. Total adduct level in the intestine declined to 29.4% of the maximum value 78 days after the last exposure, while there was no significant decline in adduct levels in liver, gills or brain. The results suggest that intestine is more susceptible to adduct formation than liver after oral exposure, and that adduct levels in the intestine represent ongoing or relatively recent exposure. DNA adducts in the other investigated tissues were much more persistent and may therefore accumulate during long-term exposure.  相似文献

Laboratory-produced and -reared sub-adults of silver pomfret (zobaidy) Pampus argenteus affected by severe scuticociliatosis during April and May 2005 were investigated and the causative was a scuticociliate, presumptively identified as Uronema sp. The parasite was capable of producing highly necrotic skin lesions. Mortalities started with a rise in the seawater temperature from 20 to 21.5 degrees C, coinciding with an increase in the total bacterial load of the rearing tank water from 10(3) to 10(5) CFU ml(-1). The parasite was successfully cultured in vitro (85 passages), using 10% brain heart infusion broth inoculated simultaneously with an aquatic Vibrio sp. The parasite reached peak cell density (1.82 x 10(5) cells ml(-1)) on the third day of inoculation. The parasite cell count was found to be inversely related (r = -0.45) to the bacterial count in the incubation medium. The ciliate body dimensions measured, on average, 34.05 +/- 0.99 microm in length and 16.70 +/- 0.74 microm in width (n = 300). Silver staining revealed morphological characteristics of Uronema sp., including a truncated anterior end, a buccal apparatus, caudal cilium and 3 oral polykinetids, with the first one appearing as a single row. Average number of kineties was 12 +/- 3. There was an inverse relationship (R2 = 0.84) between the proteolytic activity and the number of in vitro passages of the scuticociliate. However, the parasite from a freshly infected fish (using inoculum from the tenth passage) showed higher proteolytic activity (31.2%) compared with that produced by the inoculum from in vitro cultures (9.75%). The ciliate also showed a distinct histophagous capability when tested in vitro using host muscle tissue.  相似文献

During a study of myxosporean parasites of cultivated freshwater fish, a new myxosporean species, Henneguya pellucida n. sp., was discovered. Of the 120 Piaractus mesopotamicus sampled, only 10 specimens (8.3%) were infected. Yellow, round plasmodia measuring 0.5-3 mm were found in the serous membrane of the visceral cavity and in the tunica externa of the swim bladder. Sporogenesis was asynchronous, with the earliest developmental stages aligned prevailingly along the endoplasmic periphery and mature spores in the central zone. The mature spores were pear shaped (total length: 33.3 +/- 1.5 microm, mean +/- SD; width: 4.1 +/- 0.4 microm; body length: 11.4 +/- 0.3 microm; caudal process length: 24.1 +/- 1.5 microm). The polar capsules were elongated (length: 4.0 +/- 0.4 microm; width: 1.6 +/- 0.2 microm). The development of the parasite in the swim bladder produced thickening of the tunica externa and a granulomatous reaction. There was no correlation between the prevalence of the parasite and the chemical and physical characteristics of the water. Infection was recorded only in juvenile specimens ranging in size from 9.5 to 20 cm.  相似文献

The scuticociliate Miamiensis avidus was isolated from olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus showing typical symptoms of ulceration and hemorrhages in skeletal muscle and fins. In an infection experiment, olive flounder (mean length: 14.9 cm; mean weight: 26.8 g) were immersion challenged with 2.0 x 10(3), 2.0 x 10(4) and 2.0 x 10(5) ciliates ml-1 of the cloned YS1 strain of M. avidus. Cumulative mortalities were 85% in the 2.0 x 10(3) cells ml-1 treatment group and 100% in the other 2 infection groups. Many ciliates, containing red blood cells in the cytoplasm, were observed in the gills, skeletal muscle, skin, fins and brains of infected fish, which showed accompanying hemorrhagic and necrotic lesions. Ciliates were also observed in the lamina propria of the digestive tract, pharynx and cornea. The fixed ciliates were 31.5+/-3.87 pm in length and 18.5+/-3.04 microm in width, and were ovoid and slightly elongated in shape, with a pointed anterior and a rounded posterior, presenting a caudal cilium. Other morphological characteristics were as follows: 13 to 14 somatic kineties, oral ciliature comprising membranelles M1, M2, M3, and paroral membranes PM1 and PM2, contractile vacuole at the posterior end of kinety 2, shortened last somatic kinety and a buccal field to body length ratio of 0.47+/-0.03. In addition, continuous PM1 and PM2, lack of M3 and variable kinetosome numbers in M2 and M3 were frequently observed. Specimens in the current study were compared with previous reports on M. avidus and Philasterides dicentrarchi and confirmed consistently that these 2 taxa are conspecific.  相似文献

Heterobothrium okamotoi, a monogenean gill parasite, shows high host specificity for tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes. In the present study, in vivo and in vitro experimental infections were conducted using various fish species, including T. rubripes, to understand the mechanisms of specificity. In in vivo experiments, T. rubripes, grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles, olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, and red sea bream, Pagrus major, were exposed to oncomiracidia of H. okamotoi labelled with a fluorescent dye, 5- (and -6) carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester, and the numbers of parasites on the gills and skin were recorded at intervals. Oncomiracidia were attached to gills and skin of all the experimental fish species immediately after exposure, and the infection intensity on T. rubripes was higher than that on T. niphobles and much higher than those on the other two species. After 2 days, the attached parasites remained on the gills of T. rubripes, but disappeared from the other hosts. During in vitro experiments, gill filaments excised from seven different fish species (four fish species used in the in vivo experiments and panther puffer, Takifugu pardalis, southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma and spotted halibut, Verasper variegates) were exposed to oncomiracidia and the attachment to each fish species and subsequent larval behaviour was observed. The percentage of post-larvae that attached to T. rubripes was slightly higher than those which attached to congeneric fish species and much higher than those of non-tetraodontid fish species. In vivo and in vitro experiments demonstrated that oncomiracidia of H. okamotoi have an affinity for their natural host, T. rubripes, and congeneric fish species. The disappearance of attached post-larvae from 'alien' hosts within 2 days during in vivo experiments suggested that host recognition by oncomiracidia and subsequent post-larval survivability are involved in the host specificity of H. okamotoi.  相似文献

Experiments on curarized carp showed that neurons of the vagal lobe of the medulla respond to stimulation not only of the mouth and gills, but also of chemoreceptors of the skin of the head. The vagal lobe was shown to contain considerably fewer neurons responding selectively to stimulation of the skin than neurons responding to stimulation of the mouth or gills. Differences were found between responses of neurons to a natural food stimulus (extract from a fish food product) and to solutions of hydrochloric acid and common salt. The different roles of the vagal and facial lobes in the processing of impulsation from skin chemoreceptors is demonstrated.A. A. Zhdanov Leningrad State University.
