Summary The crustacean optic neuropiles, the lamina ganglionaris and especially the medulla externa, show a specific pattern of green fluorescence with the fluorescence histochemical method of Falck-Hillarp. Normally, only the terminals and the cell bodies fluoresce, but in reserpine-treated animals exogenous catecholamines are taken up by the whole adrenergic neuron and are thus visualized as a whole. Incubating crayfish optic neuropiles in dopamine or -methylnoradrenaline after reserpine treatment demonstrated a tangential neuron connecting the lamina and the medulla externa. The morphology of this tangential neuron differs from the two types of tangential neurons, Tan1 and Tan2, previously characterized with Golgi techniques. The catecholaminergic neuron thus constitutes a third tangential neuron type. Acknowledgement. Summary With the fluorescence method of Falck and Hillarp, the presence and localization of monoaminergic neurons in the optic ganglia of several crustaceans and insects have been investigated. It was found that in both classes the monoaminergic terminals, when present, appeared (especially in the medullae externa and interna of the crustaceans and the medulla of the insects) in strata specific for each species. So far, the only monoamine (visualized by this technique) present in the crustacean optic ganglia is dopamine, whereas in the Insecta, the catecholamines dopamine and noradrenaline, and the indolamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, are found in the optic lobe. Summary The neuronal types and patterns in the visual system of the species Artemia salina and Daphina magna have been studied with the Golgi method and electron microscopy. The lamina contains five classes of neurons: photoreceptor axons, monopolar, centrifugal, tangential and amacrine neurons. The terminals of the receptor axons are distributed in two (A. salina) or three (D. magna) layers. The dilated terminals have an extensive and wide array of fine branches. One axon from each ommatidium bypasses the lamina and terminates in the medulla in A. salina. A. salina has four types of monopolar neurons, two of which are stratified, whereas in D. magna only two types are found, one of which is bistratified. Tangential T-neurons connect the lamina with the protocerebrum. D. magna has in addition one tangential T-neuron connecting both the lamina and the medulla with the protocerebrum. In both species monopolar-type centrifugal neurons connect the medulla and the lamina, whereas that of A. salina has a wide laminar distribution. Both species also have amacrine cells in the lamina. The medulla contains, besides those shared with the lamina, transmedullary neurons (two types in A. salina), amacrine cells and neurons originating in the protocerebrum.Cartridge-type synaptic compartments are lacking in the investigated species, although a periodic arrangement is discernible in the distal portion of the lamina of A. salina. The receptors from three types of specialized contacts in Artemia, one of which involves a dyad. D. magna has only one-to-one synapses. In malacostracan crustaceans and insects three nested optic lobe neuropils are linked by two successive chiasmata that reverse and then reverse again horizontal rows of retinotopic columns. Entomostracan crustaceans possess but two retinotopic neuropils connected by uncrossed axons: a distal lamina and an inner plate-like neuropil, here termed the visual tectum that is contiguous with the protocerebrum. This account proposes an evolutionary trajectory that explains the origin of chiasmata from an ancestral taxon lacking chiasmata. A central argument employed is that the two optic lobe neuropils of entomostracans are homologous to the lamina and lobula plate of insects and malacostracans, all of which contain circuits for motion detection—an archaic attribute of visual systems. An ancestral duplication of a cell lineage originally providing the entomostracan lamina is proposed to have given rise to an outer and inner plexiform layer. It is suggested that a single evolutionary step resulted in the separation of these layers and, as a consequence, their developmental connection by a chiasma with the inner layer, the malacostracan-insect medulla, still retaining its uncrossed connections to the deep plate-like neuropil. It is postulated that duplication of cell lineages of the inner proliferation zone gave rise to a novel neuropil, the lobula. An explanation for the second chiasma is that it derives from uncrossed axons originally supplying the visual tectum that subsequently supply collaterals to the opposing surface of the newly evolved lobula. A cladistic analysis based on optic lobe anatomy of taxa possessing compound eyes supports a common ancestor of the entomostracans, malacostracan crustaceans, and insects.  相似文献

Summary The effect of daylight on the compound eye was investigated in the deep-water crustacean isopod Cirolana borealis Lilljeborg. The animals were captured and fixed at night (dark-exposed, i.e. not exposed to light) and day (daylight-exposed), respectively. Changes in light and darkness have an effect on the retinula cells; the ultrastructure of dark-exposed eyes is characterized by well-preserved organelles and cytoplasm. The photoreceptor membranes covering the microvilli are regularly aligned, and the outline of the villi is smooth. Electron-dense pigment granules are evenly distributed in the cytoplasm of the retinula cell outside the rhabdom. Daylight-exposed eyes differ from the dark-exposed eyes in the following aspects: (i) the microvilli are disrupted, (ii) retinula-cell pigment is found in the rhabdom, and (iii) the cytoplasm of retinula cells is vesiculated. These results are interpreted as retinal damage caused by excess exposure to light.  相似文献

The striated muscles of Derocheilocaris typica consist of mononucleated cells, each containing one filament bundle. Large muscles consist of two or more cells adjacent to each other. The mitochondria line up along the filament bundle on one side. The nucleus is situated in the mitochondrial row and has a small cytoplasmic area around it filled with glycogen. The sarcomeres are between 3 and 6 μm long. The Z-line and H band are present. Six thin filaments surround one thick filament. All muscles belong to the phasic type. The tubular system emanates from the ends of the muscle cell and penetrates the whole cell. The tubules are formed as cisterns, which also open at the cell membrane at the level of the I bands. They have sarcoplasmic cisterns on both sides forming a continuous triad system. Partially transformed epidermal cells mediate muscle insertions on the cuticle. Tendons are formed with the transformed epidermal cells being supplemented by fibroblasts forming collagen fibers. Dorsal and ventral abdominal muscles are innervated from the dorso-lateral nerve arising from the nerve chain. Each muscle cell receives one axon, which forms one synapse on the mitochondrial-free side of the muscles. Axons form terminal spines, which make axo-axonal synapses.  相似文献

A continuing study of a collection of marine arthropods from the Upper Cretaceous of Sahel Alma in Lebanon has uncovered a new genus and species of the problematic arthropod group Thylacocephala. The apparent presence of two pairs of antennae constitutes the first available morphological evidence for a close relationship between this species and, by association, all thylacocephalans, and the Crustacea.  相似文献

Summary The terminals of retinal afferents in the tectum of the axolotl have been identified ultrastructurally using techniques of horseradish peroxidase-filling and degeneration. The mitochondria in filled structures show a characteristic electron-lucent matrix. After both eyes have been removed, terminals with light mitochondria disappear from the area known to receive an optic input. In this area the presence of light mitochondria is almost always diagnostic of the retinal origin of a bouton. The synapses are similar to those assumed to be of retinal origin in other vertebrates. Detailed morphometric analysis has been carried out on identified optic synapses in the optic tectum of the axolotl.  相似文献

Summary In this study we examine the fine structure of mechanosensory hairs in the antennule of crayfish. The sensory hair is a stiff shaft with feather-like filaments. The hair's base is a large expansion of membrane which allows the hair shaft to deflect. The sensory transducing elements are located far from the hair, but are coupled mechanically with the hair shaft by a fine extracellular chorda. The sensory element is a type of scolopidium which consists of a scolopale cell and three sensory cells with a 9 + 0 type ciliary process.This type of scolopidium is characteristic of the chordotonal organ that has no cuticular structure on the surface of the exoskeleton. In this crustacean hair receptor, the deflection of the cuticular hair is transmitted through the chorda to the scolopidium which is a tension-sensitive transducer. The present study reveals that the mechanosensory hair of decapod crustaceans is a chordotonal organ accompanied by a cuticular hair structure. We also discuss comparative aspects of cuticular and subcuticular chordotonal organs in arthropods.  相似文献

The morphology of the foregut, which is a good indicator of phylogenetic relationships, has been studied within the two suborders of the Mysidacea. Special attention has been focused on rare species belonging to the Lophogastrida and the three primitive families of the Mysida, i.e. Stygiomysidae, Lepidomysidae and Petalophthalmidae. It appears that the foregut of Gnathophausia gracilis (Lophogastrida) is the most primitive in the Mysidacea, and that in the Petalophthalmidae the foregut exhibits transitional stages between that of the Lophogastrida and of the evolved Mysidae. Moreover, in the four families of Mysida, ancestral characteristics of the foregut remain, thus strengthening the hypothesis of the unity of this order.  相似文献

The study of 38 samples of aquatic fauna from Venezuela increased the number of known species here from 28 to 66. Fifteen new species for science are described. A list of Copepoda known from the other regions of South America is presented. The Paripe river estuary is located in Itamaracá Island, north coast of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Its Crustacea Decapoda fauna was studied during several years. In the estuary there are mangroves, mud- and sandbanks, and tidal creeks. The fauna comprises a total of 64 species in 20 families. The coexistence of these species confirms the ecological importance of this small estuary, only 1.6 km long and 0.5 km wide. The ecology of each species in the estuary is presented.  相似文献

New studies on malacostracan relationships have drawn attention to issues concerning monophyly of the order Mysidacea, manifested in recent crustacean classifications that treat the taxon as two separate orders, Lophogastrida and Mysida. We present molecular phylogenies of these orders based on complete sequences of nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA (18S rRNA), and morphological evidence is used to revise the classification of the order Mysida to better reflect evolutionary history. A secondary structure model for 18S rRNA was constructed and used to assign putative stem and loop regions to two groups of partitions for phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenies were estimated by maximum-likelihood, Bayesian inference, and maximum-parsimony. The analyses gave strong support for three independently derived lineages, represented by three monophyletic groups, Lophogastrida, Stygiomysida, and Mysida. The family Petalophthalmidae is considered as sister group to the family Mysidae, and Boreomysinae and Rhopalophthalminae are the most early derived of the Mysidae. The tribes contained in the current classification of the subfamily Mysinae are not well-supported by either molecular data or morphology.  相似文献

Summary The endocardium of Oniscus asellus L. and Asellus aquaticus L. consists of lipid cells. The epicardium consists of a layer of cells with a vesiculated cytoplasm covered by a thick extracellular fibrous sheet. The myocardium is a single layer of cells, the sarcolemma invaginates at Z disc level forming transverse tubules, and longitudinal tubules branch off from these. At the A-I level' longitudinal tubules form transverse systems, which form couplings with the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The sarcoplasmic reticulum appears as perforated sheets enveloping the myofibrils. Two types of nerve terminal are found: one is embedded in a myocardial cell process, the other lies in a myocardial cell depression. The first satisfactory groupings of the components of the Branchiopoda (Crustacea) were those of G. O. Sars, whose successive refinements, as modified by Caiman in a much used work, received wide acceptance. These schemes, and the more important of the subsequently suggested changes, are listed and tabulated. The Branchiopoda is a morphologically heterogeneous group whose component subgroups share a constellation of primitive features. It is also ancient, with representatives known from as far back as the Devonian, and probably originated in pre-Devonian times, yet still has many extant, sometimes highly successful, representatives. Such a situation presents difficulties to the would-be classifier. A new scheme is proposed which involves the elevation of four lower categories among the so-called Cladocera to ordinal rank. Two conchostracan taxa are also given ordinal status. The ten constituent orders now recognized within the Branchiopoda are defined in more detail than hitherto as a working basis for future investigations.  相似文献

Australian species of the iphimediid amphipod genus Iphimedia are revised. Based on new material from inshore and continental shelf habitats six new species are described: Iphimedia beesleyae; I. filmersankeyi; I. kateae; I. lisae; I. neuweileri and I. oetkeri. Four established species are redescribed: I. ambigua Haswell, 1879; I. discreta Stebbing, 1910; I. edgari (Moore, 1981) and I. warraina (Thomas and Barnard, 1991).
