The objective of this study was to determine the frequency profile, median frequency (MF) and mean power frequency (MPF) of trunk muscles in an isometric graded maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in isometric axial trunk rotation from a neutral upright seated posture. Twelve young healthy subjects (seven males, five females) were instrumented with surface electrodes on their external obliques, internal obliques, rectus abdominis, pectoralis, latissimus dorsi and erector spinae at T10 and L3 levels bilaterally. These subjects were stabilized in seated posture in an axial rotation tester (AROT) and asked to perform a graded isometric contraction of their maximal value to both right and left directions from a neutral posture within a period of 10s. EMG from all 14 channels were sampled at 1 kHz at 10% intervals of MVC from 10% to MVC. These samples were subjected to fast Fourier transform analysis. The frequency profile plots demonstrated the power of muscles involved in agonistic and antagonistic activity. However, the frequency composition showed little difference between them. The MF was higher in agonists of the same muscle. The MPF was always higher than MF. Both values were generally insignificantly different between different levels of contraction. However, with increasing level of contraction there was increase in power.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the electromyographic (EMG) power spectral characteristics of seven trunk muscles bilaterally during two complex isometric activities extension-rotation and flexion-rotation, in both genders to describe the frequency-domain parameters. Eighteen normal young subjects volunteered for the study. The subjects performed steadily increasing isometric extension-rotation and flexion-rotation contractions in a standard trunk posture (40 degrees flexed and 40 degrees rotated to the right). A surface EMG was recorded from the external and internal oblique, rectus abdominis, pectoralis, latissimus dorsi, and erector spinae muscles at the 10th thoracic and the 3rd lumbar vertebral levels, at 1 kHz and 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The median frequency (MF), mean power frequency (MPF), frequency spread and peak power were obtained from fast Fourier transform analysis. The MF and MPF for both extension-rotation and flexion-rotation increased with the grade of contraction for both males and females. The EMG spectra in flexion-rotation were different from those of extension-rotation (P < 0.001). The left external and right internal oblique muscles played the role of antagonists in trunk extension-rotation. There was an increase in the MF of the trunk muscles with increasing magnitude of contraction. Frequency-domain parameters for both the male and female subjects were significantly different (P < 0.001).  相似文献

Normalization of the surface electromyogram (EMG) addresses some of the inherent inter-subject and inter-muscular variability of this signal to enable comparison between muscles and people. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of several maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) strategies, and identify maximum electromyographic reference values used for normalizing trunk muscle activity. Eight healthy women performed 11 MVC techniques, including trials in which thorax motion was resisted, trials in which pelvis motion was resisted, shoulder rotation and adduction, and un-resisted MVC maneuvers (maximal abdominal hollowing and maximal abdominal bracing). EMG signals were bilaterally collected from upper and lower rectus abdominis, lateral and medial aspects of external oblique, internal oblique, latissimus dorsi, and erector spinae at T9 and L5. A 0.5 s moving average window was used to calculate the maximum EMG amplitude of each muscle for each MVC technique. A great inter-subject variability between participants was observed as to which MVC strategy elicited the greatest muscular activity, especially for the oblique abdominals and latissimus dorsi. Since no single test was superior for obtaining maximum electrical activity, it appears that several upper and lower trunk MVC techniques should be performed for EMG normalization in healthy women.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude and phasic relationship of the torso muscles in rotation–flexion of varying degree of asymmetries of the trunk. Nineteen normal young subjects (7 males and 12 females) were stabilized on a posture stabilizing platform and instructed to assume a flexed and right rotated posture. A combination 20°, 40° and 60° of rotation and 20°, 40° and 60° of flexion resulted in nine postures. These postures were assumed in a random order. The subjects were asked to exert their maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) in the plane of rotation of the posture assumed for a period of 5 s. The surface EMG from the external and internal obliques, rectus abdominis, latissimus dorsi and erector spinae at the 10th thoracic and 3rd lumbar vertebral levels was recorded. The abdominal muscles had the least response at 40° of flexion, the dorsal muscles had the highest magnitude.With increasing right rotation, the left external oblique continued to decrease its activity. The ANOVA revealed that rotation and muscles had a significant main effect on normalized peak EMG (p < 0.02) in both genders. There was a significant interaction between rotation and flexion in both genders (p < 0.02) and rotation and muscle in females. The erector spinae activity was highest at 40° flexion, due to greater mechanical disadvantage and having not reached the state of flexion–relaxation. The abdominal muscle activity declined with increasing asymmetry, due to the decreasing initial muscle length. The EMG activity was significantly affected by rotation than flexion (p < 0.02).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to objectively assess the response of car passengers to lateral accelerations. Surface EMG signals were collected bilaterally from the cervical erector spinae (CES), latissimus dorsi (LD), erector spinae (ES), external oblique (EO), and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles of 10 subjects. Lateral acceleration was also recorded. Three chassis-seat configurations AA, BA and BB were tested, with the first letter denoting the chassis and the second the seat. SEMG signals were often contaminated by noise, and were, therefore, denoised using the methods explained in part I. Reciprocal phasic activity was observed for all muscles except for the EO, and the reaction of passengers to lateral accelerations was interpreted as a bust torsion. The RMS of EMG segments was used as an indication of muscle activity. Muscle activation of VL and ES were significantly affected by the configuration tested (p < 0.05), with greater activation levels observed for the chassis A than for the chassis B. Such a finding implies that greater roll requires greater muscle activity, thus resulting in less comfortable vehicles. Therefore, SEMG can be used to provide an objective measure of discomfort in passengers subjected to lateral accelerations in a car seat.  相似文献

This study aimed at investigating the relationship between trunk and upper limb muscle coordination and stroke velocity during tennis forehand drive. The electromyographic (EMG) activity of ten trunk and dominant upper limb muscles was recorded in 21 male tennis players while performing five series of ten crosscourt forehand drives. The forehand drive velocity ranged from 60% to 100% of individual maximal velocity. The onset, offset and activation level were calculated for each muscle and each player. The analysis of muscle activation order showed no modification in the recruitment pattern regardless of the velocity. However, the increased velocity resulted in earlier activation of the erector spinae, latissimus dorsi and triceps brachii muscles, as well as later deactivation of the erector spinae, biceps brachii and flexor carpi radialis muscles. Finally, a higher level of activation was observed with the velocity increase in the external oblique, latissimus dorsi, middle deltoid, biceps brachii and triceps brachii. These results might bring new knowledge for strength and tennis coaches to improve resistance training protocols in a performance and prophylactic perspective.  相似文献

Accurately describing trunk muscle coactivation is fundamental to quantifying the spine reaction forces that occur during lifting tasks and has been the focus of a great deal of research in the spine biomechanics literature. One limitation of previous approaches has been a lack of consideration given to the variability in these coactivation strategies. The research presented in this paper is an empirical approach to quantifying and modeling trunk muscle coactivation using simulation input modeling techniques. Electromyographic (EMG) data were collected from 28 human subjects as they performed controlled trunk extension exertions. These exertions included isokinetic (10 and 45°/s) and constant acceleration (50°/s/s) trunk extensions in symmetric and asymmetric (30°) postures at two levels of trunk extension moment (30 and 80 Nm). The EMG data were collected from the right and left pairs of the erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominis, external obliques and internal obliques. Each subject performed nine repetitions of each combination of independent variables. The data collected during these trials were used to develop marginal distributions of trunk muscle activity as well as a 10×10 correlation matrix that described how the muscles cooperated to produce these extension torques. These elements were then combined to generate multivariate distributions describing the coactivation of the trunk musculature. An analysis of these distributions revealed that increases in extension moment, extension velocity and sagittal flexion angle created increases in both the mean and the variance of the distributions of the muscular response, while increases in the rate of trunk extension acceleration decreased both the mean and variance of the distributions of activity across all muscles considered. Increases in trunk asymmetry created a decrease in mean of the ipsi–lateral erector spinae and an increase in the mean of all other muscles considered, but there was little change in the variance of these distributions as a function of asymmetry.  相似文献

Maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVCs) are commonly used to normalize electromyography (EMG) data and must be reliable even if the individual has no prior experience performing MVCs. This study explored the effect of familiarization over three testing sessions on MVC performance and reliability by comparing muscle activation during standardized maximal and sub-maximal muscle contractions. Participants were recruited into two groups: (1) individuals who regularly engaged in upper body resistance training; (2) individuals with little or no prior experience in upper body resistance training. EMG was collected from two pairs of muscles; biceps brachii and triceps brachii from the arm, and erector spinae and external oblique from the trunk. The trunk muscles were chosen as muscles that are less frequently activated in isolation in day-to-day life. It was found that there were no significant improvements in MVC performance or within-day reliability over the three testing sessions for both resistance trained and non-resistance trained groups. Resistance-trained individuals showed a trend to be more reliable within-day than non-resistance trained participants. Day-to-day MVC reliability, particularly of the erector spinae muscle, was limited in some participants. This suggests that further efforts are needed to improve our capability of reliably eliciting muscle activation MVCs for EMG normalization, especially for muscles that are less frequently activated in isolation.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to investigate the EMG activity of pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi muscles during the pullover exercise. Eight healthy male volunteers took part in the study. The EMG activity of the pectoralis major and that of the latissimus dorsi of the right side were acquired simultaneously during the pullover exercise with a free-weight barbell during both the concentric and eccentric phases of the movement. After a warm-up, all the subjects were asked to perform the pullover exercise against an external load of 30% of their body weight, during 1 set × 10 repetitions. The criterion adopted to normalize the EMG data was the maximal voluntary isometric activation. The present findings demonstrated that the barbell pullover exercise emphasized the muscle action of the pectoralis major more than that of the latissimus dorsi, and the higher activation depended on the external force lever arm produced.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of instability training in the recruitment of core stabilizing muscles during dynamic multijoint movement. Surface electromyography (EMG) was measured from 6 muscles (latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominus, internal obliques, erector spinae, and soleus) while subjects performed a 9.1-kg bench press on stable and unstable surfaces. There were 4 exercises in total: (a) stable surfaces for shoulders and feet, (b) upper-body instability, (c) lower-body instability, and (d) dual instability. Five seconds of EMG were recorded during each bench press and were subsequently smoothed with root mean squares calculated for the entire time-series. A repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test overall differences between exercise conditions for each muscle. Paired equal variance t-tests with a stepwise Bonferroni correction for multiple contrasts (alpha = 0.05/total number of contrasts) were performed for muscles with significant repeated-measures ANOVA results. The results show significant increases in EMG with increasing instability. Specifically, the dual instability bench press resulted in the greatest mean muscle activation of the 3 stability conditions, with single instability conditions being significantly greater than the stable condition. This pattern of results is consistent with the position that performing the bench press in a progressively unstable environment may be an effective method to increase activation of the core stabilizing musculature, while the upper- and lower-body stabilizers can be activated differentially depending on the mode of instability.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the viability of a relationship between the temporal activation pattern of parts of the erector spinae muscle and endurance. Seven subjects performed intermittent isometric contractions [4 s at 7007o maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), 2 s rest] until exhaustion, during which the electromyographical (EMG) activity of the multifidus, iliocostalis thoracis and longissimus muscle segments was recorded. Endurance was defined as the time until exhaustion. Subjects were divided into a high and a low endurance group. The high endurance group showed significantly more variability of EMG amplitude over succeeding contractions. This group demonstrated significantly more alternations of EMG activity between parts of the muscle also. Variability of the EMG amplitude within the contractions did not differ between the groups, nor did MVC. The results indicated that alternating activity between different parts of the erector spinae muscle may function to postpone exhaustion of this muscle as a whole.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to quantify the relative contributions of each muscle group surrounding the spine to vertebral joint rotational stiffness (VJRS) during the push-up exercise. Upper-body kinematics, three-dimensional hand forces and lumbar spine postures, and 14 channels (bilaterally from rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, latissimus dorsi, thoracic erector spinae, lumbar erector spinae, and multifidus) of trunk electromyographic (EMG) activity were collected from 11 males and used as inputs to a biomechanical model that determined the individual contributions of 10 muscle groups surrounding the lumbar spine to VJRS at five lumbar vertebral joints (L1-L2 to L5-S1). On average, the abdominal muscles contributed 64.32 +/- 8.50%, 86.55 +/- 1.13%, and 83.84 +/- 1.95% to VJRS about the flexion/extension, lateral bend, and axial twist axes, respectively. Rectus abdominis contributed 43.16 +/- 3.44% to VJRS about the flexion/extension axis at each lumbar joint, and external oblique and internal oblique, respectively contributed 52.61 +/- 7.73% and 62.13 +/- 8.71% to VJRS about the lateral bend and axial twist axes, respectively, at all lumbar joints with the exception of L5-S1. Owing to changes in moment arm length, the external oblique and internal oblique, respectively contributed 55.89% and 50.01% to VJRS about the axial twist and lateral bend axes at L5-S1. Transversus abdominis, multifidus, and the spine extensors contributed minimally to VJRS during the push-up exercise. The push-up challenges the abdominal musculature to maintain VJRS. The orientation of the abdominal muscles suggests that each muscle primarily controls the rotational stiffness about a single axis.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to review systematically the literature available on electromyographic (EMG) variables of the golf swing. From the 19 studies found, a high variety of EMG methodologies were reported. With respect to EMG intensity, the right erector spinae seems to be highly activated, especially during the acceleration phase, whereas the oblique abdominal muscles showed moderate to low levels of activation. The pectoralis major, subscapularis and latissimus dorsi muscles of both sides showed their peak activity during the acceleration phase. High muscle activity was found in the forearm muscles, especially in the wrist flexor muscles demonstrating activity levels above the maximal voluntary contraction. In the lower limb higher muscle activity of the trail side was found. There is no consensus on the influence of the golf club used on the neuromuscular patterns described. Furthermore, there is a lack of studies on average golf players, since most studies were executed on professional or low handicap golfers.Further EMG studies are needed, especially on lower limb muscles, to describe golf swing muscle activation patterns and to evaluate timing parameters to characterize neuromuscular patterns responsible for an efficient movement with lowest risk for injury.  相似文献

Objective:The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in back extensor muscle endurance before and after kinesiology tape application to all back stabilizer muscles and to the erector spinae alone.Methods:We assessed 32 adults (16 men and 16 women), randomly divided into two groups. In the erector spinae taping (EST) group, kinesiology tape was applied only to the erector spinae, and in the total muscle taping (TMT) group, kinesiology tape was applied to the erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, lower trapezius, internal oblique abdominis, and external oblique abdominis.Results:Both groups showed significant difference in terms of back extensor muscle endurance after kinesiology tape application (p<0.05). Between-group comparison revealed that the TMT group had more back extensor muscle endurance than the EST group (p<0.05) after kinesiology tape application.Conclusions:These findings indicate that, to improve back extensor muscle endurance, kinesiology tape should be applied to all back stabilizer muscles, rather than to the erector spinae muscles alone.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent of activation in various trunk muscles during dynamic weight-training and isometric instability exercises. Sixteen subjects performed squats and deadlifts with 80% 1 repetition maximum (1RM), as well as with body weight as resistance and 2 unstable calisthenic-type exercises (superman and sidebridge). Electromyographic (EMG) activity was measured from the lower abdominals (LA), external obliques (EO), upper lumbar erector spinae (ULES), and lumbar-sacral erector spinae (LSES) muscle groups. Results indicated that the LSES EMG activity during the 80% 1RM squat significantly exceeded 80% 1RM deadlift LSES EMG activity by 34.5%. The LSES EMG activity of the 80% 1RM squat also exceeded the body weight squat, deadlift, superman, and sidebridge by 56, 56.6, 65.5, and 53.1%, respectively. The 80% 1RM deadlift ULES EMG activity significantly exceeded the 80% 1RM squat exercise by 12.9%. In addition, the 80% 1RM deadlift ULES EMG activity also exceeded the body weight squat, deadlift, superman, and sidebridge exercises by 66.7, 65.5, 69.3, and 68.6%, respectively. There were no significant changes in EO or LA activity. Therefore, the augmented activity of the LSES and ULES during 80% 1RM squat and deadlift resistance exercises exceeded the activation levels achieved with the same exercises performed with body weight and selected instability exercises. Individuals performing upright, resisted, dynamic exercises can achieve high trunk muscle activation and thus may not need to add instability device exercises to augment core stability training.  相似文献

In this study, we explore the relationship between moments in the frontal and sagittal planes, generated by a lifting task, vs the electromyographic (EMG) activity of right and left trunk muscle groups. In particular, we postulate that the functional dependence between erector spinae muscle activity and the applied lifting moments about the spine is as follows: the sum of left and right erector spinae processed EMG depends on the sagittal plane moment, and the difference of left and right erector spinae processed EMG depends on the frontal plane moment. A simple out-of-sagittal plane physical model, treating the lumbar spine as a two degree-of-freedom pivot point is discussed to justify these hypotheses. To validate this model, we collected surface EMG and lifting moment data for ten males performing a grid of frontal and sagittal plane lifting tasks. A digital RMS-to-DC algorithm was developed for processing raw EMG. For these tests, we measured EMG for the left and right erector spinae and for the left and right external oblique muscles. The processed EMG signals of the left and right erector spinae muscles are summed and differenced for comparison to the measured sagittal and frontal plane moments. A linear correlation (r2) of 0.96 was obtained for the sum of erector spinae EMG vs the sagittal plane moment; a corresponding value of r2 = 0.95 was obtained for the difference vs the frontal plane moment. No correlations (r2 less than 0.004) was found for the sagittal plane moment and the difference of the left and right erector spinae EMG, and the frontal plane moment and the sum of the left and right erector spinae EMG.  相似文献

We measured the electromyographic (EMG) activity in four chest wall and trunk (CWT) muscles, the erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, pectoralis major, and trapezius, together with the parasternal, in four normal subjects during graded inspiratory efforts against an occlusion in both upright and seated postures. We also measured CWT EMGs in six seated subjects during inspiratory resistive loading at high and low tidal volumes [1,280 +/- 80 (SE) and 920 +/- 60 ml, respectively]. With one exception, CWT EMG increased as a function of inspiratory pressure generated (Pmus) at all lung volumes in both postures, with no systematic difference in recruitment between CWT and parasternal muscles as a function of Pmus. At any given lung volume there was no consistent difference in CWT EMG at a given Pmus between the two postures (P > 0.09). However, at a given Pmus during both graded inspiratory efforts and inspiratory resistive loading, EMGs of all muscles increased with lung volume, with greater volume dependence in the upright posture (P < 0.02). The results suggest that during inspiratory efforts, CWT muscles contribute to the generation of inspiratory pressure. The CWT muscles may act as fixators opposing deflationary forces transmitted to the vertebral column by rib cage articulations, a function that may be less effective at high lung volumes if the direction of the muscular insertions is altered disadvantageously.  相似文献

Background

Non-specific low back pain (LBP) has been one of the most frequently occurring musculoskeletal problems. Impairment in the mechanical stability of the lumbar spine has been known to lower the safety margin of the spine musculature and can result in the occurrence of pain symptoms of the low back area. Previously, changes in spinal stability have been identified by investigating recruitment patterns of low back and abdominal muscles in laboratory experiments with controlled postures and physical activities that were hard to conduct in daily life. The main objective of this study was to explore the possibility of developing a reliable spine stability assessment method using surface electromyography (EMG) of the low back and abdominal muscles in common physical activities.

Methods

Twenty asymptomatic young participants conducted normal walking, plank, and isometric back extension activities prior to and immediately after maintaining a 10-min static upper body deep flexion on a flat bed. EMG data of the erector spinae, external oblique, and rectus abdominals were collected bilaterally, and their mean normalized amplitude values were compared between before and after the static deep flexion. Changes in the amplitude and co-contraction ratio values were evaluated to understand how muscle recruitment patterns have changed after the static deep flexion.

Results

Mean normalized amplitude of antagonist muscles (erector spinae muscles while conducting plank; external oblique and rectus abdominal muscles while conducting isometric back extension) decreased significantly (P < 0.05) after the 10-min static deep flexion. Normalized amplitude of agonist muscles did not vary significantly after deep flexion.

Conclusions

Results of this study suggest the possibility of using surface EMG in the evaluation of spinal stability and low back health status in simple exercise postures that can be done in non-laboratory settings. Specifically, amplitude of antagonist muscles was found to be more sensitive than agonist muscles in identifying changes in the spinal stability associated with the 10-min static deep flexion. Further research with various loading conditions and physical activities need to be performed to improve the reliability and utility of the findings of the current study.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze trunk muscle activity during bridge style stabilization exercises, when combined with single and double leg support strategies. Twenty-nine healthy volunteers performed bridge exercises in 3 different positions (back, front and side bridges), with and without an elevated leg, and a quadruped exercise with contralateral arm and leg raise ("bird-dog"). Surface EMG was bilaterally recorded from rectus abdominis (RA), external and internal oblique (EO, IO), and erector spinae (ES). Back, front and side bridges primarily activated the ES (approximately 17% MVC), RA (approximately 30% MVC) and muscles required to support the lateral moment (mostly obliques), respectively. Compared with conventional bridge exercises, single leg support produced higher levels of trunk activation, predominantly in the oblique muscles. The bird-dog exercise produced greatest activity in IO on the side of the elevated arm and in the contralateral ES. In conclusion, during a common bridge with double leg support, the antigravity muscles were the most active. When performed with an elevated leg, however, rotation torques increased the activation of the trunk rotators, especially IO. This information may be useful for clinicians and rehabilitation specialists in determining appropriate exercise progression for the trunk stabilizers.  相似文献

The PLAD (personal lift assistive device) was designed to reduce the lumbar moment during lifting and bending tasks via elastic elements. This investigation examined the effects of modulating the elastic stiffness. Thirteen men completed 90 lifts (15 kg) using 6 different PLAD stiffnesses in stoop, squat and freestyle lifting postures. The activity of 8 muscles were recorded (latissimus dorsi, thoracic and lumbar erector spinae, rectus abdominis, external oblique, gluteus maximus, biceps femoris and rectus femoris), 3D electromagnetic sensors tracked the motion of each segment and strain gauges measured the elastic tension. EMG data were rectified, filtered, normalized and integrated as a percentage of the lifting task. The highest PLAD tension elicited the greatest reduction in erector spinae activity (mean of thoracic and lumbar) in comparison to the no-PLAD condition for the stoop (37%), squat (38%), and freestyle (37%) lifts, while prompting comparable reductions in gluteus maximums and biceps femoris activity. The highest PLAD stiffness also elicited the greatest reduction in the integrated L4/L5 flexion moment for the stoop (19.0%), squat (18.4%) and freestyle (17.4%) lifts without changing peak lumbar flexion. Each increase in PLAD stiffness further reduced the muscle activity of the posterior chain and the dynamic lumbar moment.  相似文献
