Whether nonhuman primates avoid copulating with close kin living in their social group is controversial. If sexual aversion to relatives occurs, it should be stronger in females than in males because of females' greater investment in each offspring and hence greater costs resulting from less viable offspring. Data presented here show that adult male rhesus macaques breeding in their natal groups at Cayo Santiago experienced high copulatory success, but copulated less with females of their own matrilineages than with females of other matrilineages. Adult females were never observed to copulate with males of their own matrilineage during their fertile periods. Although natal males sometimes courted their relatives, examination of two measures of female mate choice showed that females chose unrelated natal males over male kin. Female aversion to male kin was specific to the sexual context; during the birth season, females did not discriminate against their male relatives in distributing grooming. Evolved inbreeding avoidance mechanisms probably produce different outcomes at Cayo Santiago than in wild rhesus macaque populations. Gender differences in sexual aversion to relatives may be partly responsible for differences between studies in reported frequency of copulations by related pairs. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Normative age- and gender-related changes in body composition, serum lipids, testosterone, and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) were examined in the Cayo Santiago free-ranging rhesus macaques. In both adult males and females, body weights, crown-rump lengths, and circumference of the limbs were lowest in the oldest group (20+ years of age) as compared with other adult age classes. Body fat, as reflected in subcutaneous fatfold thickness and waist/thigh ratios, were higher in adult females than adult males. This gender dimorphism was first detectable among the 6-9 year old age group. Greatest body fat among females was observed in the 10-14 age group, whereas in males the highest values were observed in the 15-19 age group. Differences in body composition were also observed with respect to reproductive status. Although there were no gender differences in overall cholesterol levels, there were age-related differences between males and females, and only in males were cholesterol values positively related to adiposity. There were no age- or gender-related differences in triglyceride values, but levels were significantly higher in pregnant females in comparison with other reproductive states. Levels of testosterone were not significantly related to any morphometric parameter and values did not decrease significantly with age. Levels of IGF-1 exhibited a significant age-related decrease among adult males, and females had higher levels independent of age. The similarities between the present findings and human studies suggest that further studies in the free-ranging rhesus macaques would provide a bridge between studies of laboratory-housed primates and studies of human beings with respect to the etiology of obesity and life-history changes in body composition and endocrine and metabolic parameters.  相似文献

Observations were made on the Macaca mulatta colony on the island of Cayo Santiago over a period that included two reproductive cycles. The frequency of aggressive behaviour was found to fluctuate cyclically as a function of the colony's reproductive state. Males were wounded and died significantly more frequently during the mating season than at any other time of year. Females were wounded about as often during the mating season as during the birth season, and more died during the birth season than during the mating season, although not significantly so. There was no significant difference between sexes in age at death, nor was there a significant departure from expectation of number of deaths per age class. However, mortality among the reproductively mature males was greater than among mature females. It was suggested that differential injury and mortality rates among adult males might be an indirect result of high levels of androgens which could conceivably alter threshold levels for stimuli initiating severe aggressive interactions.  相似文献

The hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis modulates individuals' physiological responses to social stress, which is an inevitable aspect of the daily lives of group‐living animals. Previous nonhuman primate studies have reported that sex, age, rank, and reproductive condition influence cortisol levels under stressful conditions. In this study we investigated cortisol responses to stress among 70 multiparous, free‐ranging female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) on the island of Cayo Santiago, PR. Plasma cortisol samples were collected in two consecutive years under similar conditions. Twenty‐two females were sampled both years, and most of those females were lactating in only one of the years. Individual differences in cortisol levels were stable across years, even though reproductive condition changed for most individuals. No relationship was found between age or social rank and cortisol levels. Of the females that changed reproductive conditions, cortisol levels were higher when they were lactating than when they were cycling, and the amount of change in cortisol from cycling to lactating was greatest for low‐ranking individuals. Heightened reactivity to stress during lactation may be the result of concerns about infant safety, and such concerns may be higher among low‐ranking mothers than among higher ranking mothers. Psychosocial stress and hyperactivation of the HPA axis during lactation can suppress immune function and increase vulnerability to infectious diseases, thus explaining why adult females in the free‐ranging rhesus macaque population on Cayo Santiago have a higher probability of mortality during the birth season than during the mating season. The social relationships of adult male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in Group I of the Cayo Santiago colony were studied over a period of 14 months. Relationships were found in which adult males and sexually mature females were persistently close to one another in nonsexual contexts, both within and across seasons. Males of long tenure and high dominance rank tended to have more female partners, and more persistent relationships, than more recent immigrants of lower rank. Correlations with length of tenure were stronger than those with dominance rank. Closely-related females tended to have persistent relationships with the same male. In most cases the female was primarily responsible for maintaining proximity in non-sexual contexts. Dyads which were persistently within 5 m of each other in the birth season were more likely to form a consortship in the subsequent mating season than those which had a brief relationship. A similar tendency was apparent in the 1 m data but it was not statistically significant. There was no association between persistent proximity during the birth season and the occurrence of long, or multiple consortships, nor with the maintenance of proximity or direction of grooming between consort partners. The pattern of consortships was not closely related to the formation of persistent relationships in the subsequent birth season. Females occasionally received protection from their male partners and, in some cases, spent more time in the feeding corral with them than did other females. Affiliative relationships can be very enduring and may have long-term benefits that were not apparent during the study period.  相似文献

Data on the rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) of Cayo Santiago demonstrate both intergroup and seasonal variability in spatial defence. Of the five groups only one defends an area, and only during the birth season. The four non-defensive groups share two feeding stations and live in such close proximity that spatial defence would require high outputs of energy. In contrast, the group that maintains an exclusive area has its own feeding station and lives in semi-isolation on an easily defensible end of the island. Its defence of this end of the island during the birth season provides a protected area for infants and assures the group exclusive access to flowering and fruiting plants. Relaxation of this defensive behaviour during the mating season maximizes opportunities for intergroup matings.  相似文献

The timing of fission among free-ranging Rhesus monkeys   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Behavioral observations were carried out on a large group of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) on Cayo Santiago from January 1968 to December 1969 and from October through December 1970. During this period, social group A divided. The 24-month study period can be classified into five stages which represent the different phases in the process of group fission. Two criteria for fission were established: the cessation of grooming between adult females of different sub-groups of the main group and the stabilization of the adult female population. The criteria were based on established information on group dynamics and inter-group behavior on Cayo Santiago. Several points became clear from the chronological analysis. Group fission is a long process. The duration of the process of fission and the specification of the season in which fission begins and is completed depends upon the definition applied. For purposes of this analysis, fission was defined as beginning with the onset of spatial fragmentation and corresponded to the initial part of the breeding season. The fission was completed during the breeding season. The duration of the process of fission was 18 months.  相似文献

This study of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) investigated whether individual differences in emotionality, as measured by scratching frequencies, are stable over time and across seasons. Five adult females living in captive social groups were observed during two consecutive birth seasons and five females during the birth and the mating season. Scratching frequencies were higher during the birth than during the mating season, suggesting that the presence of infants was associated with elevated emotionality. Individual differences in scratching frequencies remained stable across two consecutive birth seasons, but there was no significant correlation between scratching frequencies in the birth and in the mating season. These findings suggest that, under certain circumstances, individual differences in emotionality are consistent over time and that scratching may be used as a non-invasive indicator of temperament.  相似文献

The reproductive status of female otters ( Lutra lutra ) was determined from an examination of 518 carcasses collected from Eastern Germany between 1950 and 2001. In Germany otters mate throughout the year. Significant seasonal differences are evident with a distinct peak in summer. Females were in breeding condition between the ages of three and 15 years, with the majority between six and nine years. The mean litter size at birth was 2.36, which was the lowest when compared with other inland populations. There were no significant differences in litter size for regions, seasons or age. Prenatal losses account for 26.31%. The mortality between birth and first appearance of cubs following their mother is about 29%. An effective reproduction rate of 78.4% was deduced from the known age structure of the sample and the proportion of breeding females. Reproductively active females show a significantly higher body condition than non-reproductive females. Following these investigations into breeding status, suggestions on reproductive output and the life history of the otter are discussed.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 329–340.  相似文献

Sixty-four male and 33 female free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) from one of six social groups on the island of Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, were surveyed to establish normal values for the hemogram and serum biochemical and electrolytes for the colony. Mean values (± 1 SD) are reported by sex for each of three age groups (2–3, 4–9 and ≥ 10 years). All adult females (≥ 4 years) were pregnant. There were significant differences for a number of variables compared to the range reported in the existing literature, and among the age and sex groups in the sampled population.  相似文献

Bones of the face and cranial vault meet at sutural boundaries. These sutures are of great importance for craniofacial growth. Although the effects that the sutures have on modulating craniofacial strains have been investigated, how sutural fusion influences primate craniofacial biomechanics and adaptation are less considered. Confounding this problem is the lack of any systematic data on patterns of craniofacial sutural fusion from animals of known age and sex. This study examined the status of 28 sutures in Macaca mulatta skulls from a collection of animals of known age and sex from Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. Survival analysis showed that most animals died before all sutures fused. There was high variation in the age at which individual sutures or sutural sections were fused in M. mulatta, and significant differences in the amount of sutural fusion among regions and between males and females. Intensive fusion of sutures took place between ages 5 and 15. Sutures in the facial area tended to be less fused than in the cranial vault. Between adolescence and adulthood, males tended to have more sutural fusion than females, especially in the facial area. These differences might be biomechanical adaptations during ontogeny to craniofacial sexual dimorphism. These findings enrich our understanding of variation in sutural morphology in rhesus monkeys. Comparative information across primate species is essential for understanding the biomechanics of craniofacial form throughout primate evolution.  相似文献

Five adult and subadult sons of middle- and low-ranking female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were observed to hold high dominance rank in their natal groups during a 12-month study at Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. Three of these males also experienced high mating success during at least one mating season. These findings contrast with all previously published accounts of rank acquisition by natal male rhesus macaques in provisioned colonies, and they present a challenge to the hypothesis that natal transfer functions to increase male access to fertile females.  相似文献

This paper explores the effect that a dependent rhesus macaque infant (Macaca mulatta) has on the timing of its mother's resumption of mating. Toward this end, behavioral data from the rhesus populations at Tughlaqabad, India, and Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, are compared. Specifically, the intervals between parturition and subsequent resumption of mating for individual parous females are examined in order to shed light on the relative importance of environmental and internal factors (such as lactational infertility) in the control of rhesus mating behvior. At both study sites it was found that the later a given female gave birth during a birth season the shorter was her parturition-mating interval and the younger was her infant when she resumed mating activity. It is suggested that this finding is the result of an interaction of environmental and internal factors; both act in concert to determine how soon after parturition a particular rhesus female will resume mating activity.  相似文献

Offspring birth mass and growth rate represent important life history traits, which influence many vital population and individual characteristics, while offspring survival is a key factor in variation in female reproductive success. For a threatened population of pinnipeds, such as New Zealand sea lions, Phocarctos hookeri, (Grey, 1844, NZ sea lions), understanding individual life history parameters and population dynamics is vital for their management and conservation. This is the first study of the behaviour of females during parturition, pup birth mass and growth, and pre-weaning survival of NZ sea lions, Enderby Island, Auckland Islands during austral summer breeding seasons, 2001/2002 to 2003/2004. Pregnant females arrived ashore 2.1 ± 0.16 days prior to giving birth. After parturition, mothers suckled their pups for 8.6 ± 0.16 days before leaving on their first foraging trip. Male pups were born significantly heavier than female (males 10.6 ± 1.4 kg, females 9.7 ± 0.9 kg). Pups lost on average 48 ± 0.14 g per day mass during the early postpartum period (between birth and mothers first foraging trip). Pup mortality did not vary by pup sex, birth mass, date of birth or any maternal characteristics however it varied significantly between years due to a bacterial infection epidemic (Pup mortality at 60 days: 2001 32%; 2002 21%; 2003 12%). The absolute growth rate per day for pups was 151 g/day over all years. Pup growth rate measured as the slope of linear line fitted to pup mass by age was consistently higher for pups with heavier birth mass, male pups and during the 2002 season. High offspring mortality and slow growth rates coupled with maternal foraging behaviour at their physiological limits may reflect a threatened species which has limited ability for population growth in an environment which is at the extreme of their historical range and impacted upon by fisheries.  相似文献

It is well established that aging of the human skeleton includes the loss of bone mass or density, but little comparative information on age-related osteopenia in other primates is available. In order to determine whether bone loss occurs in normally locomoting nonhuman primates, radiographs of 139 rhesus monkey skeletons from the Cayo Santiago collection were examined, and measures of percent cortical bone (PCT) at the midshaft of second metacarpals, humeri, and femora were calculated. An age-related osteopenia was observed in the metacarpal of adult female macaques, although much individual variation was present. This variability could not be explained by reproductive history (number of offspring), matrilineal affiliation, or degree of osteoarthrosis. However, in a subsample of 15 animals, females who had given birth in the three months prior to death showed lower PCTs than those who had not conceived in the previous mating season. In adult males, PCT did not vary significantly with age, but males that weighed less and those with no/little osteoarthrosis showed lower PCTs than heavier or more arthritic animals, respectively. The multifactorial nature of the variation in PCT observed here suggests that similar processes of bone behavior are involved in the skeletal aging of both humans and rhesus monkeys.  相似文献

Eighty-two percent of a group of rhesus monkeys removed from Cayo Santiago were seropositive for B virus (Herpesvirus simiae) antibodies. Similar results were obtained from the Cayo Santiago macaque population two decades ago and from feral Indian rhesus monkeys. Thus it is likely that B virus has been enzootic in the Cayo Santiago population since 1938, when the colony was established with stock imported from India.  相似文献

Secondary sex ratios (SSR) were calculated from 1,385 offspring delivered by 372 females in the Cayo Santiago population of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) from 1976 through 1984. The SSR for the entire colony ranged from 0.86 to 1.46 males per female (combined total: 1.08), but no significant difference was observed (P > .05). SSR values were compared among the troops for each year. The SSR differed significantly among the six social groups (P < .05) only in 1978. The annual SSR of each troop was compared over 9 years. Significant variation was found only in group O. The annual SSR was significantly skewed (P < .05, males > females) for three troops in 3 separate years. The SSR did not vary according to troop rank. No significant difference was found among the 17 matrilines of the population, but comparison of matrilines within each social group revealed a significant difference in the SSR (P < .02) for the three matrilines in group I. This was due to the significantly skewed SSR (P = .0080, females > males) of the DM genealogy in that troop. SSR values were not related to matrilineal rank. Individual dominance rank did not bias the SSR. Complete reproductive histories for 266 females showed no evidence of significantly skewed SSR values. Age-related effects on the SSR were examined by using cross-sectional and cohort-based analyses. The SSR did not vary significantly (P > .05) with maternal age, but it was significantly skewed (P < .05) toward males at the ages of 5 and 9 years. Parity had no significant effect (P > .05) on SSR values. Wide variation occurred in the SSR of the Cayo Santiago population. Rank-related adjustment of the SSR at the level of the troop, matriline, or individual, as reported in short-term studies of other primate social groups, may reflect normal annual variation in the SSR evident only from longitudinal observations of large multigroup primate populations.  相似文献

Paternity assessment through DNA fingerprinting by synthetic oligonucleotide probes was applied to one birth cohort in a social group of free-ranging rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) on Cayo Santiago. The 11 group males and 9 males from other groups were observed mating with the females. Paternity was determined for 11 of the 15 infants. Male dominance rank was not associated with reproductive success. High-ranking resident males (N=5) sired 27% of the infants born during a one-year study. Four of the 11 infants of known paternity were sired by males of other social groups. The four infants of unknown paternity were sired either by males not observed mating with the females or the low-ranking male who was not fingerprinted. Male dominance rank was not associated with reproductive activity during conception cycles. These results suggest that the effect of rank on male reproductive success is not a predictable correlation, but a conditional probability.  相似文献

Individual spatial positioning plays an important role in mediating the costs and benefits of group living, and thus shapes different aspects of animal social systems including group structure and cohesiveness. I aimed to quantify variation in individual spacing behavior and its correlates in a group of wild patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) living in north Cameroon. I collected data on inter-individual distances during group scans when following subject females. Individuals had longer inter-individual distances during the non-birth season than during the birth season. Dominance relationships had little effect on inter-individual distances between females during both the non-birth and birth seasons. The results suggest that group cohesion was higher during the birth season than the non-birth season. Thus I conclude that higher group cohesion during the birth season may reduce the predation risk of infants.  相似文献

This cross-sectional study investigates the relationship between parity, bone mineral density, and spontaneous osteopenia/osteoporosis in a large skeletal population of female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) from the free-ranging colony of Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. The sample consists of 119 mature female monkeys aged 4.0-22.2 years at time of death. The data consist of measurements of bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD), obtained from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) of the last lumbar vertebra. After controlling for age, there is a significant increase in BMD of the spine with increasing parity (P = 0.0006), up to a parity of 7 offspring. Thus, high parity initially has a positive effect on BMD in female rhesus monkeys, but this positive effect disappears with parities that are greater than 7 offspring. After controlling for parity, however, age has a negative (P = 0.015) effect on BMD, beginning several years after the attainment of peak BMD (age 9.5 years). Thus, it appears that parity initially mitigates the effects of aging, but the positive effect of parity on BMD is eventually overwhelmed by the aging process. Mean BMC and BMD values are higher in parous females compared to nulliparous females in the same age range. Similarly, females with low parity have significantly lower mean BMD values than do age-matched high-parity controls, and the frequency of osteopenia and osteoporosis is greater in low-parity females. Forty-three percent (43%) of the osteopenic/osteoporotic females in the sample are members of the low-parity group, even though it composes only 13% (16/119) of the entire sample. This study demonstrates that the free-ranging female rhesus monkeys from Cayo Santiago are a good nonhuman primate model for the study of bone mineral density, parity, osteopenia, and osteoporosis.  相似文献
