The influence of suckling stimulation upon postpartum aggression was studied by removing the nipples (thelectomy) of female mice at various times during pregnancy and lactation. Prepartum thelectomy, regardless of whether it was performed prior to mating or shortly before parturition, in combination with the fostering of young, prevented the exhibition of aggression. The aggressive behavior of females thelectomized following either 2 or 5 days of suckling experience was similar to that of normal lactating females. However, only 25% of animals thelectomized following 24 hr of suckling experience exhibited aggressive behavior. The results demonstrate that suckling stimulation is important for the initiation of postpartum aggression but is not essential in animals that have had at least 48 hr of suckling experience.  相似文献

Twenty-two-day-old female Rockland-Swiss albino mice ignored 1-day-old young. As age increased there was a decrease in the percentage of animals that ignored pups. Pup-killing, exhibited by a significant number of 32- and 42-day olds, declined as age increased. Furthermore, the number of females exhibiting maternal behavior increased with advancing age. Olfactory bulb removal and testosterone propionate treatment, each of which elicit pup-killing in adult females, did not induce killing behavior in 22-day olds. Finally, ovariectomy performed on Day 18 reduced the number of animals that displayed maternal behavior on Day 62.  相似文献

Hysterectomy on the 14th day of gestation in combination with the immediate and repetitive presentation of 1-day-old foster young produced lactation and fighting behavior toward adult males. The fighting behavior was comparable to that displayed by normally parturient mice. Hysterectomy alone or the presentation of pups alone initiated neither lactation nor fighting. Hysterectomy performed prior to the 12th day of gestation plus the presentation of foster young also did not initiate lactation or fighting. Ovariectomy performed in conjunction with hysterectomy on the 14th day of pregnancy together with the presentation of young produced lactation but not fighting behavior, thus suggesting that fighting and lactation are controlled by somewhat different hormonal mechanisms.  相似文献

Ovariectomized and intact adult virgin female mice presented with two 1-day-old mouse pups built larger nests and more nests rated “maternal” than did intact animals not proffered young. Virgin females presented with live 1-day olds behind a wire partition in their homecages also constructed larger nests and more nests rated “maternal” as compared to animals presented with freshly killed 1-day olds, 19-day olds, or with no pups behind the partition.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the conditions under which estrogen would promote male-like aggressive behavior in female mice. The results of the first experiment showed that most females chronically exposed to testosterone propionate (TP) in adulthood fought, whereas females similarly treated with estradiol benzoate (EB) did not display aggression. Another experiment found that, when either TP or EB was administered on the day of birth, adult females displayed aggression in response to daily EB injections during adult life. Also, the potentiating effect of neonatal hormone exposure declined over the first 12 days postpartum, as 100% of the Day 0, 75% of the Day 6, and 0% of the Day 12 and 18 TP-treated females fought in response to daily injections of 40 μg of EB in adulthood. The final study showed that, under the test conditions employed, the failure of a chronic adult EB regimen to promote aggression was not due to a competing tendency to display female sexual behavior.  相似文献

The structure of chromatin from Aspergillus nidulans was studied using micrococcal nuclease and DNAase I. Limited digestion with micrococcal nuclease revealed a nucleosomal repeat of 154 base pairs for Aspergillus and 198 base pairs for rat liver. With more extensive digestion, both types of chromatin gave a similar quasi-limit product with a prominent fragment at 140 base pairs. The similarity of the two limit digests suggests that the structure of the 140 base pair nucleosome core is conserved. This implies that the difference in nucleosome repeat lengths between Aspergillus and rat liver is caused by a difference in the length of the DNA between two nucleosome cores. Digestion of Aspergillus chromatin with DNAase I produced a pattern of single-stranded fragments at intervals of 10 bases which was similar to that produced from rat liver chromatin.  相似文献

In order to determine the neural site(s) of estradiol (E2) priming of receptive behavior in female Long-Evans rats, we attempted to inhibit the behavioral effects of peripheral injections of E2 by administering the E2 antagonist tamoxifen (TX) to particular brain regions. Crystalline TX was administered unilaterally or bilaterally via 28-gauge cannulae into the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN), the preoptic area (POA), or the interpeduncular region (IP) 1 hr prior to the first of three daily E2 benzoate injections. Subjects were tested for the presence or absence of behavioral estrus 5 hr after a 200-micrograms progesterone injection given 4 days after the initial hormone treatment. Results of this experiment showed that TX inhibits lordosis when directed toward the VMN, but not when directed toward the POA or IP. The quality of the lordosis response and the proportion of subjects showing solicitation behavior were both lower in VMN subjects treated with TX than in POA or IP subjects given the same treatment. Unilateral implants were as effective as bilateral implants in inhibiting the behavior of VMN subjects. A second experiment measured uptake of radiolabeled E2 by nuclei of hypothalamic (HYP) and POA tissue following bilateral TX administration to the VMN or POA. TX was capable of inhibiting uptake of [3H]E2 into nuclei of cells located near the implant site. Most subjects which showed behavioral inhibition also showed a reduction in uptake of [3H]E2 by HYP tissue. These data support the hypothesis that exposure of the VMN to E2 is necessary for the priming of estrous behavior in the female rat.  相似文献

After gonadectomy, more individually caged female hamsters fought prior to the initiation of hormone treatments than did group-caged females. Daily injections of testosterone propionate (TP), estradiol benzoate (EB), or progesterone (Prog) had no influence on the number of individually caged females that fought. However, TP and EB were effective in increasing the number of group-caged females that fought. In contrast to females, both individually and group-caged males fought infrequently after castration. Daily injections of TP, EB, or Prog were effective in increasing the number of individually caged males that fought, while only TP and EB were effective in group caged males. Prog failed to increase the number of group-caged hamsters of either sex that fought.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the time of administration of androgen, during the neonatal period, on the development of masculine copulatory behavior in female rats. In addition, the influence of androgen, administered neonatally, on the development of penile reflexes and cytoplasmic androgen receptor levels in the hypothalamic-preoptic area (HPOA) was examined. Female rats were injected with 0.5 mg testosterone propionate (TP) at either 1, 8, or 24 hr after birth and again 24 hr after the first injection. Fifty percent of the females treated with TP at 1 and 8 hr after birth displayed the ejaculatory response when tested in adulthood. In contrast, 93 and 87.5% of oil-treated males and females, respectively, which were androgenized at 24 hr after birth exhibited this response. The results indicate that a considerable amount of masculinization occurs postnatally in the rat. However, none of the androgenized females displayed any penile reflexes even when tested following the display of an ejaculatory response. HPOA androgen receptor levels were somewhat higher in the oil-treated females than in males but were not correlated with the ability to exhibit ejaculation patterns.  相似文献

Surgical removal of the pituitary gland (hypophysectomy) in parturient mice virtually eliminated suckling-induced prolactin (PRL) release but failed to alter the initiation of maternal aggression toward adult male intruders. Estrous female voles (Microtus montanus) received (a) no copulation, (b) one ejaculatory series, (c) two ejaculatory series, or (d) more than two series. Copulation was shown to be essential for ovulation, and increasing amounts of copulatory stimulation were demonstrated to increase the probability of ovulation. Only 25% of females receiving one ejaculatory series ovulated, whereas 100% of those receiving more than two series ovulated. Neonatal rats injected with either thyroxine (T4) or vehicle (NaOH) on postnatal Days 1, 2, and 3 were given classical-conditioning pairings of an odor with footshock when 7, 9, or 11 days of age. In accord with the conventional acceleration of other indices of maturation following the T4 treatment, 24-hr retention of the conditioned odor aversion was substantially enhanced among the 11 day-old rats given the earlier T4 treatment. Exposure of authentic dolichyl α-D-[14C]mannopyranosyl phosphate (I) or calf pancreas dolichyl [14C]mannopyranosyl phosphate (II) to ozone at ?70° in pentane followed by treatment with triphenylphosphine gave water-soluble fragments in 65–95% yield. The radioactive products obtained were similar; the major fragment had a mobility on tlc greater than that of mannose but lower than that of citronellyl β-D-mannopyranosyl phosphate. The electrophoretic behavior of the fragments indicated that they possessed intact phosphodiester linkages. α-Mannosidase released [14C]mannose from the fragments of I but not from the fragments of II; however, the latter were susceptible to β-mannosidase indicating that the pancreatic mannolipid contains a β-linked mannosyl residue.  相似文献

The effect of infection of larvae of the mosquito Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus by the fungus Lagenidium giganteum has been studied from a biochemical standpoint. Methods were developed to analyze larval extracts that were essentially free of parasitic material. Biochemical parameters investigated on a per larva basis were protein, and the enzymes o-diphenol oxidase, glutamate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, trehalase, and chitobiase. The behavior of the total amino acid and sugar pools were also examined. In general it was found that the infected larvae exhibited a significant decrease in rate of synthesis of most of the parameters studied and that the rates eventually fell to zero when compared to healthy control organisms. The progress of mycosis was correlated with visual evidence and it was concluded that the larvae were dying from starvation as a consequence of the utilization of their endogenous reserves by the parasite. Death of the larvae occurred as a general rule, in laboratory conditions, some 48 hr after initiation of infection by the fungus.  相似文献

Rats receiving MSH or diluent were trained in a two-way shuttle box to avoid shock presented at two levels of intensity. At the low level MSH improved acquisition; at the high level rats given MSH tended to perform more poorly, but were not statistically different from controls. No differences were found in measures of activity or excitability, but higher defecation rates, which may indicate more emotionality, were found in groups receiving high levels of current and in groups receiving MSH. The study suggests that MSH may facilitate learning at low, but not at high, levels of shock.  相似文献

The molecular and species specificity of glucocorticoid suppression of corticosteroidogenesis was investigated in isolated adrenocortical cells. Trypsin-isolated cells from male rat, domestic fowl and bovine adrenal glands were incubated with or without steroidogenic agents and with or without steroids. Glucocorticoids were measured by radioimmunoassay or fluorometric assay after 1-2 h incubation. Glucocorticoids suppressed ACTH-induced steroidogenesis of isolated rat cells with the following relative potencies: corticosterone greater than cortisol = cortisone greater than dexamethasone. The mineralocorticoid, aldosterone did not affect steroidogenesis. Suppression by glucocorticoids was acute (within 1-2 h), and varied directly with the glucocorticoid concentration. Testosterone also suppressed ACTH-induced steroidogenesis. Glucocorticoid-type steroids have equivalent suppressive potencies, thus suggesting that these steroids may induce suppression at least partly by a common mechanism. Although corticosterone caused the greatest suppression, testosterone was more potent. The steroid specificity of suppression of cyclic AMP (cAMP)-induced and ACTH-induced steroidogenesis were similar, suggesting that suppression is not solely the result of interference with ACTH receptor function or the induction of adenylate cyclase activity. Exogenous glucocorticoids also suppressed ACTH-induced steroidogenesis of cells isolated from domestic fowl and beef adrenal glands, thus suggesting that this observed suppression may be a general mechanism of adrenocortical cell autoregulation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether interfemale, isolationinduced aggression in house mice varies over the phases of the estrous cycle. The results indicated that there were significant variations, with aggression being higher at proestrus and metestrus and lower at estrus and diestrus. Activity level showed fluctuations across the cycle similar to the pattern established by previous research. The results were interpreted in terms of possible adaptiveness.  相似文献

Collagen production by cultured human lung fibroblasts was examined when the cells were made deficient in ascorbate. Cells grown in the absence of ascorbate produced 30% less collagen during a 6-h labeling period than cells incubated with as little as 1 microgram/ml ascorbate during the labeling period. Cells grown without ascorbate produced under-hydroxylated collagen which was subject to increased intracellular degradation from a basal level of 16% to an enhanced level of 49% of all newly synthesized collagen. The likely mechanism for increased intracellular degradation is the inability of under-hydroxylated collagen to assume a triple-helical conformation causing it to be susceptible to intracellular degradation. Measurement of collagen production by enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA) using antibodies directed against triple-helical determinants of collagen showed that both types I and III collagens were affected. In contrast, another connective tissue component, fibronectin, was not affected. Analysis by ELISA showed a greater decrease in collagen production than did analysis by the collagenase method, suggesting that some non-helical collagen chains (detected by collagenase but not by ELISA) were secreted in the absence of ascorbate. These results provide a mechanism to account, in part, for the deficiency of collagen in connective tissues which occurs in a state of ascorbate deficiency.  相似文献
