The generation of superoxide has been implicated as a cause of cochlear damage from excessive noise. Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) generally will protect against superoxide-mediated tissue injury but protection by this enzyme against noise trauma is controversial. This study assessed auditory function in C57BL/6 mice overexpressing SOD1 or treated with lecithinized SOD1 (PC-SOD1). Noise exposure caused significantly higher threshold shifts in PC-SOD1-treated animals than physiological saline-treated animals. Cochlear tissues of PC-SOD1-treated animals exhibited significant elevation of the levels in the SOD activity, not in the catalase activity, in comparison with those of saline-treated animals. Likewise, transgenic mice overexpressing SOD1 tended to suffer higher threshold shifts than nontransgenic littermates from noise exposure. The findings indicate that increasing SOD1 enhances auditory dysfunction following noise exposure.  相似文献

摘要 目的:探讨血府逐瘀汤对糖尿病视网膜病变患者视神经形态结构的影响。方法:2017年11月~2019年12月选择在本院就诊的糖尿病视网膜病变患者76例,根据随机信封抽签原则把患者分为观察组与对照组各38例。对照组给予康柏西普治疗,观察组在对照组治疗的基础上给予血府逐瘀汤治疗,两组都治疗观察2个月,记录视神经形态结构变化情况。结果:治疗后观察组的总有效率为97.37 %,显著高于对照组的78.95 %(P<0.05)。两组治疗后行空腹血糖(fasting blood glucose,FBG)与餐后2 h血糖(2 h postprandial blood glucose,2hPG),值都低于治疗前,观察组低于对照组(P<0.05)。两组治疗前的视盘周围视网膜神经纤维层(Retinal nerve fiber layer,RNFL)厚度在上象限、下象限、颞象限、鼻象限上对比无差异(P>0.05),两组治疗后各个象限的RNFL厚度均显著下降(P<0.05),且观察组各个象限的RNFL厚度均低于对照组(P<0.05)。观察组治疗后的红细胞聚集指数与纤维蛋白原低于治疗前,也低于对照组(P<0.05),对照组治疗前后对比无差异(P>0.05)。结论:血府逐瘀汤在糖尿病视网膜病变患者中的应用能改善视神经形态结构,促进降低血糖,改善患者的血液流变学状况,从而提高治疗效果。  相似文献

We have studied axon regeneration through the optic chiasm of adult rats 30 days after prechiasmatic intracranial optic nerve crush and serial intravitreal sciatic nerve grafting on day 0 and 14 post-lesion. The experiments comprised three groups of treated rats and three groups of controls. All treated animals received intravitreal grafts either into the left eye after both left sided (unilateral) and bilateral optic nerve transection, or into both eyes after bilateral optic nerve transection. Control eyes were all sham grafted on day 0 and 14 post-lesion, and the optic nerves either unlesioned, or crushed unilaterally or bilaterally. No regeneration through the chiasm was seen in any of the lesioned control optic nerves. In all experimental groups, large numbers of axons regenerated across the optic nerve lesions ipsilateral to the grafted eyes, traversed the short distal segment of the optic nerve and invaded the chiasm without deflection. Regeneration was correlated with the absence of the mesodermal components in the scar. In all cases, axon regrowth through the chiasm appeared to establish a major crossed and a minor uncrossed projection into both optic tracts, with some aberrant growth into the contralateral optic nerve. Axons preferentially regenerated within the degenerating trajectories from their own eye, through fragmented myelin and axonal debris, and reactive astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia and macrophages. In bilaterally lesioned animals, no regeneration was detected in the optic nerve of the unimplanted eye. Although astrocytes became reactive and their processes proliferated, the architecture of their intrafascicular processes was little perturbed after optic nerve transection within either the distal optic nerve segment or the chiasm. The re-establishment of a comparatively normal pattern of passage through the chiasm by regenerating axons in the adult might therefore be organised by this relatively immutable scaffold of astrocyte processes. Binocular interactions between regenerating axons from both nerves (after bilateral optic nerve transection and intravitreal grafting), and between regenerating axons and the intact transchiasmatic projections from the unlesioned eye (after unilateral optic nerve lesions and after ipsilateral grafting) may not be important in establishing the divergent trajectories, since regenerating axons behave similarly in the presence and absence of an intact projection from the other eye.  相似文献

In this study, 50 patients with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy due to saddle block were selected as the experimental group, and 50 healthy subjects were used as the control group to conduct a study. The best corrected visual acuity examination, optical coherence tomography and visual evoked potential examination were performed on the two groups. The results of the study showed that the majority of patients were middle-aged and older people over the age of 50, but the youngest patients were only 37 years old. After various examinations, it was found that patients with optic nerve injury had a significant reduction in the best corrected visual acuity compared with healthy people. After the onset of the disease, the optic nerve fiber layer will first increase and then decline. During the course of the disease, the patient's optic nerve fiber layer will gradually thin to a much lower level than healthy people. And in comparing the thickness of the optic nerve fiber layer in patients with systemic disease and no systemic disease, it is found that the degree of optic nerve damage is more serious in patients with systemic diseases. After the VEP examination, the difference between the P100 wave latency and the N75-P100 amplitude of the diseased eye and the unaffected eye was statistically significant. Moreover, the difference between the patient's diseased eye and the healthy human eye is almost the same as that of the unaffected eye.  相似文献

对4只青年猫(1-3龄)和4只老年猫(10-13龄)视神经进行形态计量比较研究。取两个年龄组的颅内相应部分视神经进行横向连续切片,H.E染色于光镜下观察其基本结构;相邻切片进行结晶紫染色显示胶质细胞;神经丝蛋白(NF)免疫染色显示视神经纤维,胶质纤维酸性蛋白(GFAP)免疫染色显示星形胶质细胞(AS),对实验结果进行统计学分析并绘制纤维直径谱。与青年猫相比,老年猫视神经外膜厚度、直径、面积均显著增加,视神经纤维的密度和数量显著下降,且以视神经中央部纤维密度下降最显著;纤维直径谱分析结果显示,青、老年猫纤维直径分布范围相似,但老年猫的峰直径及纤维平均直径比青年猫的显著减小;另外,老年猫视神经束中的星形胶质细胞明显膨大,胶质细胞密度以及星形胶质细胞占胶质细胞总数的百分比均显著增加。结果表明:在衰老过程中视神经纤维出现明显的丢失现象,纤维平均直径显著减小使其对视觉信息的传导速度减慢,这可能是导致老年个体视觉分析速度下降的重要原因;老年个体视神经束内胶质细胞活动增强可能对维持视神经纤维形态、功能或延缓视神经进一步衰老起保护作用  相似文献

Oxidative stress and nitrosative stress play important roles in the pathogenesis of secondary spinal cord injury. Recently, we demonstrated that peripheral nerve grafts (PNG) with acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) partially restore hind limb locomotion in adult rats with completely transected spinal cords. This study investigated the protein abundances of the superoxide (O2*)-generating enzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (phosphate) oxidase (NAD(P)H oxidase; gp91phox subunit), nitric oxide synthases (NOS), antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutases (Cu Zn SOD, Mn SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) as well as nitrotyrosine in the spinal cord tissue 4 months after spinal cord transection in rats with and without PNG and aFGF. The protein abundances of the gp91phox subunit of NAD(P)H oxidase, Mn SOD, catalase, GPX, eNOS, and nitrotyrosine were significantly upregulated, whereas Cu Zn SOD and nNOS were unchanged in the injury group compared to the sham controls. The nerve graft with aFGF treated group showed significantly better hind limb locomotion recovery than the injury group. Although the protein abundances of gp91phox, nitrotyrosine, and Cu Zn SOD were similar in the treated group (nerve graft with aFGF) compared to the injury group, Mn SOD, GPX, catalase, and eNOS protein abundances were significantly higher, whereas nNOS was markedly lower in the treated group. We conclude that the combination of nerve graft and aFGF enhances the local antioxidant defense system after spinal cord transection in rats.  相似文献

Changes in number and distribution of retinal ganglion cells were studied after optic nerve crush in zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) with retinal wholemount. There were approximately 40,000 to 56,000 cells in the retinal ganglion cell layer. The density of ganglion cells was divided into six classes and the area of highest cell density (central area) was located at the temporal area to the optic disc in normal fish. At the early regeneration stages after optic nerve crush, the percentage of lost cells increased gradually. Cell density had fallen first in the central area. At the late regeneration stages, there was an approximately 20% loss of ganglion cells during optic nerve regeneration. The results suggest that the loss of cells may undergo apoptosis rather than necrosis. A wave of cell loss started in the central area and spread progressively further into periphery. The reason caused these changes may be due to temporal interruption of optic nerve function, recovery from crush and the ability to quickly regenerate in optic nerve of the fish.  相似文献

We investigated the expression of myocilin in the optic nerve head of porcine eyes by Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining. Myocilin was localized in the nucleus, centrosome, glial filament, mitochondria, and some parts of the cell membranes of the astrocytes. Myocilin was also detected at the edge-feet portion of the processes of astrocytes adjacent to the inner limiting membrane and blood vessel wall. The astrocytes are the major cell population in the optic nerve head, contributing to the architecture of the nerve axon and blood vessels. Therefore, myocilin gene mutation and change of myocilin protein are likely to affect the architecture of the optic nerve head and induce various forms of glaucomatous optic nerve damage.  相似文献

BackgroundProgressive disc tilting and the development or enlargement of peripapillary atrophy (PPA) are observed during a myopic shift in children. This could be related to the changes around the optic nerve head during eyeball elongation. If the biomechanical properties at or around the optic nerve head are changed after exposure to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma eyes, different response of the disc tilting and PPA changes could take place during eyeball elongation by myopic shift. On the basis of this background, the aim of this study was to compare the morphological changes in the optic disc induced by a myopic shift during childhood between normal control eyes, eyes from disc suspects with an enlarged cup-to-disc ratio (CDR), and eyes with childhood glaucoma.MethodsTotal of 82 eyes from 82 subjects younger than 14 years of age were included in the study. Serial disc photographs were classified into one of two groups: eyes with an optic nerve head (ONH) or peripapillary atrophy (PPA) change or without an ONH/PPA change. Using ImageJ software, the outlines of the optic disc and PPA were plotted, and the vertical disc diameter (VDD), horizontal disc diameter (HDD), and maximum PPA width (PPW) were measured. The changes in the ratios of these parameters and the relationships between the degree of myopic shift or the ONH/PPA change were analyzed.ResultsTwenty-five eyes with normal optic disc appearance, 36 eyes with enlarged cup-to-disc ratio, and 21 eyes of glaucoma patients were analyzed. The initial intraocular pressure (IOP) at diagnosis was significantly different among the groups (P<0.001). The degree of myopic shift during follow-up period was not significantly different among the groups (P=0.612). However, the changes in the HDD/VDD and PPW/VDD ratios were significantly greater in the disc suspect group and significantly smaller in the glaucoma group. Among the 42 eyes with an ONH/PPA change, 16 (38.1%) were from the normal control group, 24 (57.1%) were from the disc suspect group, and 2 (4.8%) were from the glaucoma group (P < 0.001).

Conclusions and Relevance

The optic disc change during childhood myopic shift was different in eyes with various conditions. Eyes of childhood glaucoma showed less change in the disc morphology during myopic shift compared to eyes with normal disc or enlarged cup-to-disc ratio.  相似文献

Purpose: Ankaferd Blood Stopper® (ABS), a licenced medicinal herbal extract, is commonly used as an effective topical haemostatic agent. This study is designed to investigate whether topical ABS application may cause peripheral nerve degeneration and neuromuscular dysfunction in a mouse sciatic nerve model.

Methods: Twenty mice were randomly divided into two groups; an ABS treated experimental group and a saline-treated control group. Left sciatic nerves were treated with 0.3?ml of ABS in the experimental group and 0.3?ml of sterile saline in the control group for 5?min. Peripheral nerve degeneration and neuromuscular dysfunction were evaluated by behavioural tests, electrophysiological analysis and weight ratio comparison of target muscles.

Results: The motor function, assessed by the sciatic function index, was significantly impaired in ABS-treated animals as compared to the animals treated with saline. Motor coordination, evaluated with the rotarod test, was significantly decreased (–42%) in ABS-treated animals compared to the saline-treated animals. The degree of pain, assessed by the reaction latency to thermal stimuli (hot-plate test), was significantly prolonged (313%) in ABS-treated mice when compared to the saline-treated mice. ABS-treated mice showed a significant reduction in motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) (–52%) and the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) (–47%); however, it significantly prolonged onset latency (23%). The gastrocnemius muscles weight ratio of the ABS group was considerably lower than that of the control group.

Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that ABS triggers peripheral nerve degeneration and functional impairment and, thus promotes a deterioration of sciatic nerves.  相似文献

The survival rate of male Fischer-344/Du rats treated chronically with high doses of deprenyl was investigated. Eighteen month old rats were treated with 1 mg/kg s.c. deprenyl 3 times per week for 13 months. At the age of 31 months, treated rats showed a greater mortality rate with three of 12 rats surviving, while in saline-treated control animals seven of 12 animals survived. No significant differences in superoxide dismutase (SOD) or catalase (CAT) activities in brain regions of control and treated animals were seen at 31 months of age. In contrast, when 27 month old rats were treated in the same manner for one month, significant increases in SOD (both Cu,Zn- and Mn-) and CAT activities were found in substantia nigra, striatum and cerebral cortex, but not in hippocampus. This effect was produced with a wide range of deprenyl doses (0.25-2 mg/kg, but not 4 mg/kg). Although a causal relationship between the two different effects of the drug, i.e. 1) increases in antioxidant enzyme activities and 2) the prolongation of survival of animals, has not been directly demonstrated, the loss of both effects with the high dose of the drug in the present experiment may be taken as circumstantial evidence for their causal relationship.  相似文献

Differentiation of the optic lobe anlagen begin in the brain of second instar. Each is an elongated disc of cortical cells placed on the dorsolateral border of each protocerebrum. In the late second instar the disc elongates and its two ends bend inwards which gradually separate from the central region, thus giving three imaginal discs. The protocerebral neuropile extends into these discs and medulla interna and externa are formed. The rudiments of compound eyes (cephalic complex) appear in the early laid larva. These are attached with the brain and pharyngeal wall separately. The posterior portion of cephalic complex (optic bud), after establishing a nervous association with the central optic lobe anlage (lamina ganglionaris), forms the compound eye. Ech optic bud is attached to the brain by a non-nervous stalk. The epiblast cells of the optic bud do not migrate into the brain and the lamina is formed by the proliferation of the central imaginal disc. The reorientation of the optic lobe anlagen starts in the late third instar and the medulla interna divides into two unequal lobes. In 2 day pupa the nerve fibres from the lamina travel into the optic stalk and the optic nerve is formed. The epiblast cells of the optic bud differentiate to form a peripheral epithelial layer which becomes pigmented and gets apposed to the lateral boundary of the brain. The central epiblast cells of the optic bud form several ommatidia. The optic nerve degenerates gradually and various components of the compound eye are formed by the epiblast cells. Chiasm internum is present but chiasm externum is absent.  相似文献

Endotoxin exposure elicits various responses in mammals including the acute phase response that has been shown to cause changes in the activity of several forms of cytochrome P450s and other enzymes. Therefore, the hepatic conjugating enzyme, glutathione S‐transferase (GST), and UDP‐glucuronosyltransferase (UDPGT), the antioxidant enzymes, glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as lipid peroxidation were investigated following the administration of endotoxin to male Sprague–Dawley rats (8 mg/kg body weight). Rats were euthanized at various times following endotoxin administration and the livers removed and processed to assess various enzyme activities. Glutathione S‐transferase, UDPGT, and GSHPx activity showed statistically significant decreases after 24 hours and remained lower than controls for the duration of the study. Decreases in total SOD and catalase activities were seen at 24, 48, and 72 hours following endotoxin administration; however, only catalase activity showed statistically significant differences between control and treated samples at those time points, and total SOD activity showed a statistically significant decrease at 24 hours. No statistically significant changes were seen in the level of lipid peroxidation in the liver microsomes from endotoxin‐treated animals. Changes in the conjugative enzymes and the free‐radical scavenging enzymes following endotoxin exposure may alter the host's metabolism and response to free radicals. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Background

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a specific intermediate filament of the cytoskeleton of the astrocyte and may be used as a specific marker for astrocytic damage. It is detectable in the cerebrospinal fluid following a relapse caused by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) spectrum disease. Higher levels are found following an NMO-related relapse. It is not known if GFAP is also detectable in the serum following such relapses. In particular, it is not known if lesions limited to the optic nerve release GFAP in sufficient quantities to be detectable within the serum. The aim of this study was to ascertain the extent to which serum GFAP levels can distinguish between an episode of optic neuritis (ON) related to NMO spectrum disease and ON from other causes.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Out of 150 patients consecutively presenting to our eye hospital over the period March 2009 until July 2010, we were able to collect a serum sample from 12 patients who had presented with MS-related ON and from 10 patients who had presented with NMO spectrum disease-related ON. We also identified 8 patients with recurrent isolated ON and 8 patients with a corticosteroid-dependent optic neuropathy in the absence of any identified aetiology. GFAP was detectable in the serum of all but three patients (two patients with MS-related ON and one with recurrent optic neuritis). The median serum GFAP level in the patient group with NMO spectrum disease was 4.63 pg/mL whereas in all other cases combined together, this was 2.14 pg/mL. The difference was statistically significant (P = 0.01). A similar statistically significant difference was found when cases with pathology limited to the optic nerve were compared (P = 0.03).

Conclusions

Glial pathology in NMO related optic neuritis is reflected in elevated serum GFAP levels independently of whether or not there is extra-optic nerve disease.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to compare diameter of healthy and affected optic nerve determined by ultrasound with brain lesions in acute retrobulbar neuritis in patients with multiple sclerosis. In this prospective study 20 patients with multiple sclerosis and acute retrobulbar neuritis were examined. Optic nerve diameter was measured by ultrasound. Brain lesions were detected by magnetic resonance. Correlation between demyelinating lesions of the brain in multiple sclerosis and optic nerve diameter was tested by Kruskal-Wallis test. Significant difference in diameter between healthy and affected optic nerve in acute retrobulbar neuritis was found. Demyelinating brain changes examined by magnetic resonance revealed periventricular lesions, subcortical lesions and lesions in corpus callosum. There is statistically significant correlation between optic nerve diameter and number of brain lesions in multiple sclerosis, p < 0.05. Diameter of optic nerve in retrobulbar neuritis measured by ultrasound correlates with brain lesions detected by magnetic resonance in multiple sclerosis.  相似文献

The optic nerve contains the connective tissues, i.e. the lamina cribrosa and pial septa. This report presents a histological comparison of the lamina cribrosa and pial septa in the five classes (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and teleosts) of vertebrates. Furthermore, the distribution of myelinated fibers was observed from the optic nerve through the retina in the same animals. The lamina cribrosa is found in mammals except for mice, and in birds. Structural complexity of the lamina was different in animals but generally dependent of the optic nerve thickness. The pial septa were present in the optic nerve proper of the mammals except for the mice, in birds and in a part of teleosts. Fasciculation of the optic nerve by the pial septa tended to be more prominent as the optic nerve become thicker. The optic nerve consisted of largely myelinated fibers in vertebrates. The retina contained some myelinated fibers in submammals but was thoroughly devoid of myelinated fibers in mammals. The borderline between myelinated and unmyelinated portions in the optic nerve of different species did not related to the lamina cribrosa. Amphibians had exceptionally only a few myelinated fibers in the optic nerve and no myelinated fibers in the retina.  相似文献

Optic neuritis (ON), which is an acute inflammatory autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS), often occurs in multiple sclerosis (MS). ON is an early diagnostic sign in most MS patients caused by damage to the optic nerve leading to visual dysfunction. Various features of both MS and ON can be studied following induction of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of MS, in Lewis rats. Inflammation and cell death in the optic nerve, with subsequent damage to the retinal ganglion cells in the retina, are thought to correlate with visual dysfunction. Thus, characterizing the pathophysiological changes that lead to visual dysfunction in EAE animals may help develop novel targets for therapeutic intervention. We treated EAE animals with and without the calpain inhibitor calpeptin (CP). Our studies demonstrated that the Ca2+‐activated neutral protease calpain was upregulated in the optic nerve following induction of EAE at the onset of clinical signs (OCS) of the disease, and these changes were attenuated following treatment with CP. These reductions correlated with decreases in inflammation (cytokines, iNOS, COX‐2, and NF‐κB), and microgliosis (i.e. activated microglia). We observed that calpain inhibition reduced astrogliosis (reactive astroglia) and expression of aquaporin 4 (AQP4). The balance of Th1/Th2 cytokine production and also expression of the Th1‐related CCR5 and CXCR3 chemokine receptors influence many pathological processes and play both causative and protective roles in neuron damage. Our data indicated that CP suppressed cytokine imbalances. Also, Bax:Bcl‐2 ratio, production of tBid, PARP‐1, expression and activities of calpain and caspases, and internucleosomal DNA fragmentation were attenuated after treatment with CP. Our results demonstrated that CP decreased demyelination [loss of myelin basic protein (MBP)] and axonal damage [increase in dephosphorylated neurofilament protein (de‐NFP)], and also promoted intracellular neuroprotective pathways in optic nerve in EAE rats. Thus, these data suggest that calpain is involved in inflammatory as well as in neurodegenerative aspects of the disease and may be a promising target for treating ON in EAE and MS.  相似文献

The concentration of serotonin within the pineal gland of the monkey exhibits a 24-hour rhythm, being higher during the hours of light and falling during the hours of darkness. Chiasmotomies were performed upon male cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca irus) to ascertain whether the intrapineal concentration of serotonin is dependent upon information passing from the eyes by means of nerve fibers that cross in the optic chiasma. After two weeks, the operated animals, whether killed in the light or the dark, showed a significant reduction in intrapineal serotonin compared with controls; however, the concentration of serotonin in operated animals killed during hours of light was comparable with that of control animals killed during the corresponding hours of darkness. The results indicate that the intrapineal concentration of serotonin is dependent upon information transmitted from the eyes by means of nerve fibers which cross in the optic chiasma; it is possible that these fibers are also components of the accessory optic tracts. It also is suggested that during hours of light, uncrossed fibers of retinal origin may participate in the regulation of the intrapineal serotonin concentration of this monkey.  相似文献

Dihematoporphyrin ether, also known as Photofrin-II (Pf-II) is currently used in the diagnosis and management of a variety of epithelial neoplasms, in a modality known as photodynamic therapy (PDT). A major drawback of these porphyrins for PDT is their ability to evoke prolonged cutaneous photosensitization. The mechanism of tumor ablation and cutaneous photosensitization by these photosensitizers is thought to relate to the generation of one or more reactive oxygen species such as superoxide anion, singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical. However, the role of these oxygen species has not been established unequivocally. In this study, the mechanism of Pf-II-mediated cutaneous photosensitization was examined using murine ear swelling as a marker. The mice treated with Pf-II and light demonstrated two-fold enhancement of ear swelling whereas animals treated with the SOD mimic, beta-carotene and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) had considerably less ear swelling (p less than 0.01). The observed protective effect was dependent on the dose of each quencher and followed the pattern SOD mimic DMSO beta-carotene. The histopathologic alterations caused by Pf-II photosensitization were significantly alleviated by pretreatment with SOD mimic whereas beta-carotene and (DMSO) were less effective. Inhibitors of superoxide dismutase (sodium diethyldithiocarbamate) and catalase (hydroxyl amine and 3, amino 1,2,4-triazole) augmented Pf-II-mediated cutaneous photosensitization. These data provide the first in vivo evidence for the involvement of superoxide anion in cutaneous porphyrin photosensitization.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: To evaluate the influence of corneal astigmatism (CA) on retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and optic nerve head(ONH) parameters measured with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) in high myopes patients before refractive surgery. METHODS: Seventy eyes of 35 consecutive refractive surgery candidates were included in this study. The mean age of the subjects was 26.42 +/- 6.95 years, the average CA was 1.17 diopters (D; SD 0.64; range 0.2 to-3.3D), All subjects in this study were WTR CA. 34 eyes were in the normal CA group with a mean CA was 0.67 +/- 0.28D, 36 eyes were in the high CA group with an average CA of 1.65 +/- 0.49D. All subjects underwent ophthalmic examination and imaging with the Cirrus HD OCT. RESULTS: No significant difference was noted in the average cup-to-disk ratio, vertical cup-to-disk ratio and cup volume (all P values > 0.05). Compared with the normal CA group, the high CA group had a larger disc area and rim area, thinner RNFL thickness in the temporal quadrant, and the superotemporal and inferotemporal peaks were farther to the temporal horizon (All P values < 0.05). There were no significant differences between the two groups in global average RNFL thickness, as well as superior, nasal and inferior quadrant RNFL thickness (all P values > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The degree of with-the-rule CA should be considered when interpreting ONH parameters and peripapillary RNFL thickness measured by the Cirrus HD OCT.
