Zaprionus indianus is a drosophilid native to the Afrotropical region that has colonized South America and exhibits a wide geographical distribution. In contrast, Z. sepsoides is restricted to certain African regions. The two species differ in the size of their testes, which are larger in Z. indianus than in Z. sepsoides. To better understand the biology and the degree of differentiation of these species, the current study evaluated spermatogenesis in males of different ages by conventional staining techniques and ultrastructural analysis. Spermatogenesis and the ultrastructure of spermatozoa were similar in the two species, and the diploid number was confirmed to be 2n = 12. A greater number of spermatozoa were observed in young Z. indianus (1–3 days old) compared to Z. sepsoides males, which showed a higher frequency of cells at the early stages of spermatogenesis. The head of the sperm was strongly marked by silver staining, lacto-acetic orcein and the Feulgen reaction; the P.A.S. reaction revealed glycogen granules in the testes of both species. Both species presented similar arrangement of microtubules (9+9+2), two mitochondrial derivatives of different size and 64 spermatozoa per bundle. Such similarity within the genus Zaprionus with other species of Drosophila, indicates that these structures are conserved in the family Drosophilidae. The differences observed the number and frequency of sperm cells in the early stages of spermatogenesis, between the young males of Z. indianus and Z. sepsoides, are features that may interfere with reproductive success and be related to the invasive potential of Z. indianus. 相似文献

We analyzed natural populations of Zaprionus indianusin 10 Indian localities along a south-north transect (latitude: 10–31°3 N). Size traits (body weight, wing length and thorax length) as well as a reproductive trait (ovariole number) followed a pattern of clinal variation, that is, trait value increased with latitude. Wing/thorax ratio, which is inversely related to wing loading, also had a positive, but non-significant correlation with latitude. By contrast, bristle numbers (sternopleural and abdominal) exhibited a non-significant but negative correlation with latitude. Sex dimorphism, estimated as the female/male ratio, was very low in Z. indianus, contrasting with results already published in other species. Genetic variations among populations were also analyzed according to other geographic parameters (altitude and longitude) and to climatic conditions from each locality. A significant effect of altitude was found for size traits. For abdominal bristles, a multiple regression technique evidenced a significant effect of both latitude and altitude, but in opposite directions. Genetic variations were also correlated to climate, and mainly with average year temperature. Taking seasonal variations into account failed however to improve the predictability of morphometrical variations. The geographic differentiation of Z.indianusfor quantitative traits suggests adaptive response to local conditions, especially to temperature, but also reveals a complex situation according to traits investigated and to environmental parameters, which does not match results on other drosophilid species. 相似文献

Zaprionus indianus was first recorded in Brazil in 1999 and rapidly spread throughout the country. We have obtained data on esterase loci polymorphisms (Est2 and Est3), and analyzed them, using Landscape Shape Interpolation and the Monmonier Maximum Difference Algorithm to discover how regional invasion occurred. Hence, it was apparent that Z. indianus, after first arriving in São Paulo state, spread throughout the country, probably together with the transportation of commercial fruits by way of the two main Brazilian freeways, BR 153, to the south and the surrounding countryside, and the BR 116 along the coast and throughout the north-east. 相似文献

Zaprionus indianus (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an African species that was introduced in Brazil near the end of the 1990’s decade. To evaluate
the adaptive potential of morphological traits in natural populations of this recently introduced species, we have investigated
wing size and shape variation at Rio de Janeiro populations only two years after the first record of Z. indianus in Brazil. Significant genetic differences among populations from three distinct ecological habitats were detected. The heritability
and evolvability estimates show that, even with the population bottleneck that should have occurred during the invasion event,
an appreciable amount of additive genetic variation for wing size and shape was retained. Our results also indicated a greater
influence of environmental variation on wing size than on wing shape. The importance of quantitative genetic variability and
plasticity in the successful establishment and dispersal of Z. indianus in the Brazilian territory is then discussed. 相似文献

Total synaptonemal complex (SC) lengths were estimated from Oreochromis aureus Steindachner (which has a WZ/ZZ sex determination system), O. mossambicus Peters and O. niloticus L. (both of which have XX/XY sex determination systems). The total SC length in oocytes was greater than that in spermatocytes
in all three species (194 ± 30 μm and 134 ± 13 μm, 187 ± 22 μm and 127 ± 17 μm, 193 ± 37 μm and 144 ± 19 μm, respectively).
These sex-specific differences did not appear to be influenced by the type of sex determination system (the female/male total
SC length ratio was 1.45 in O. aureus, 1.47 in O. mossambicus and 1.34 in O. niloticus) and do not correlate with the lack of any overall sex-specific length differences in the current Oreochromis linkage map. Although based on data from relatively few species, there appears to be no consistent relationship between sex-specific
SC lengths and linkage map lengths in fish. Neomale (hormonally masculinized genetic female) O. aureus and O. mossambicus had total SC lengths of 138 ± 13 μm and 146 ± 13 μm respectively, more similar to normal males than to normal females. These
findings agree with data from other vertebrate species that suggest that phenotypic sex, rather than genotype, determines
traits such as total SC length, chiasmata position and recombination pattern, at least for the autosomes. 相似文献

A molecular phylogeny for the drosophilid genus Zaprionus was inferred using a mitochondrial (CO-II) and a nuclear (Amyrel) gene using 22 available species. The combined molecular tree does not support the current classification, dubbed phylogenetic, based entirely upon a morphocline of forefemoral ornamentation. For species for which DNA was not available, phylogenetic positioning was only assigned using morphological characters. In order to avoid conflict between DNA and morphology in the combined analyses (supermatrix method), we developed a new method in which few morphological characters were sampled according to an a priori homoplasy assessment on the consensus molecular tree. At each internal node of the tree, a number of synapomorphies was determined, and species with no molecular sequences were grafted thereon. Analogously to tree vocabulary, we called our method 'morphological grafting'. New species groups and complexes were then defined in the light of our findings. Further, divergence times were estimated under a relaxed molecular clock, and historical biogeography was reconstructed under a maximum likelihood model. Zaprionus appears to be of recent origin in the Oriental region during the Late Miocene ( approximately 10 MYA), and colonization of Africa started shortly after ( approximately 7 MYA) via the maritime route of the Indian Ocean Islands. Most of the morphological and ecological diversification took place, later, in Western Africa during the Quaternary cyclic climatic changes. Furthermore, some species became recent invaders, with one, Zaprionus indianus, has successfully invaded South and North America during the last decade. 相似文献

Foraging-stage third-instar larvae from most wild-type (normal) Drosophila melanogaster stocks are generally repelled by light. To identify factors that affect the larval photoresponse, we elucidated the effects of age, temperature, and time on the photoresponse of larvae from a wild-type Canton-S stock. In addition, we analyzed the larvae from the LI2 isofemale line, which are unresponsive to light in a photoassay. To determine whether LI2 larvae behave abnormally on other behavioral paradigms, in comparison to Canton-S controls, we tested larvae in taste and olfactory assays and observed them to determine whether they dispersed in a food source. Like Canton-S larvae, LI2 larvae and other isofemale lines whose progenitors were collected from the same natural population are responsive to taste and olfactory stimuli. Moreover, LI2 larvae disperse in the food source, as do Canton-S larvae tested in the dark. Larvae expressing parasbl

According to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) the development of bioindicators is extremely necessary to achieve
the conservation targets by 2010, and insects are considered an effective group for this goal. Drosophilids are regarded as
potential indicators, although this idea remains untested. Therefore, we followed up a protocol to test the drosophilid potential
indicator for human disturbance in the Brazilian Savanna, one of the richest and most threatened tropical biomes in the world.
Sampling was undertaken in one urban environment and two biological reserves, representing four habitat types (undisturbed
gallery forest, disturbed gallery forest, undisturbed savanna, and urban environment). We examined differences in the drosophilid
assemblages among habitat types and used the Indicator Value (IndVal) method to point out the indicator species. We also tested the two-stage indicator validation, a protocol recently proposed
in the literature, to validate the indicator species for undisturbed gallery forest and savannas, in independent samples.
The assemblage variables varied mainly in undisturbed gallery forests, and reflected changes from an undisturbed to a disturbed
stage. The IndVal associated with the two-stage protocol showed reliable characteristic species, which are very helpful for diagnostic surveys.
Likewise, species that can detect changes in the habitats were also found. We found a set of indicators, which together may
be very efficient for both assessing and reflecting a variety of conditions, improving the confidence of the bioindication
system, expanding the taxonomic options for bioindicators, and therefore, contributing to the conservation of this region. 相似文献

The presence of the micropia retroelement from the Ty1-copia family of LTR retroelements was investigated in three species of the Drosophila
cardini group. Southern blot analysis suggested the existence of at least four micropia copies in the genomes of D. cardinoides, D. neocardini and D. polymorpha populations. The high sequence similarity between dhMiF2 and Dm11 clones (micropia retroelements isolated from D. hydei and D. melanogaster, respectively) with micropia sequences amplified from D.
cardini group genome supports the hypothesis that this retroelement plays an active role in horizontal transfer events between D. hydei and the D.
cardini group.

We have shown that D. busckiimales and females, unlike other drosophilids that have been analyzed in this regard, court and copulate as well in relatively dim red light as they do in bright white light. We have also shown that males and females of this species flutter their wings during courtship and that wing fluttering in both sexes is associated with acoustic stimuli. Wingless males perform vigorous courtship but are incapable of mating, suggesting that females must perceive male song to be receptive to copulation. When they are tested with normal males, wingless females stimulate vigorous courtship, but their copulation frequencies are significantly lower than winged females. This observation suggests that perception of the female's song by either or both sexes facilitates mating. 相似文献

Phototaxis was measured in young, middle-aged, and oldDrosophila melanogaster flies of both sexes. The apparatus allowed us to measure the tendency to go toward light, independently of the time needed to do so; under such conditions, phototaxis is dissociated from locomotor activity. The percentage of photopositive flies decreased slightly with age (93.96, 80.17, and 78.97%, respectively, in young, middle-aged, and old flies). Results are discussed in connection with previous data for which the tendency to go toward light and the time to do so were not dissociated. 相似文献

Size-related sexual selection (SRSS) was examined on four traits (thorax and wing length and head and face width) inDrosophila buzzatii, by scoring male copulatory status in two mass-mating experiments. Using axenic females, experiment 1 was carried out with axenic males, and experiment 2 with yeast-supplemented males. While there was no indication of SRSS in experiment 1, such selection was substantial in yeast-supplemented males, which transmitted yeasts to mating females. Multivariate analyses of selection indicated that face width is the measured trait on which directional SRSS essentially acted in yeast-supplemented males, resulting in indirect selection on body size. Because this selection was affected by yeast diet in males, its possible interaction with the yeast transmission from males to females during the courtship is discussed. 相似文献

This study is an in-depth analysis of intersexual, intraspecific, and interspecific variability in larvopupal developmental time, pupation site preference, and larval and pupal survival of a number of isofemale lines of the speciesDrosophila mauritiana, D. melanogaster, D. sechellia, D. simulans, D. teissieri, andD. yakuba. There was no significant sex differences in pupation height, but females eclosed significantly earlier than males in all species. In addition, the suggestion of a strong negative correlation between larval developmental time and pupation height could not be confirmed in this study. The hypothesis that differences in pupation height provide a basis for niche partitioning between closely related species with overlapping distributions was tested by three planned orthogonal contrast analyses of variance. First, the two speciesD. teissieri andD. yakuba, with largely overlapping distribution, were significantly different in pupation height. Second, the two allopatric, nonoverlapping island speciesD. mauritiana andD. sechellia did not significantly differ in pupation height. However, the absence of a significant difference in the final contrast between the two cosmopolitan speciesD. melanogaster andD. simulans, which are often found together, makes us cautious to accept the hypothesis. 相似文献

Sexual selection and sexual signaling have been prominent topics in recent behavioral studies, but limited data have led to controversy regarding these topics. For example, the Hawaiian Drosophila are often cited as examples in which female choice has resulted in the evolution of elaborate male courtship signals, but relatively few data exist to test these claims adequately. We studied D. grimshawi, a lek-forming Hawaiian Drosophila, to determine whether there was evidence for female choice without male competition and to elucidate the possible cues females use to discriminate. Male mating success was found to be nonrandom and males that courted females intensely and deposited many pheromone-containing streaks on the substrate were the most successful. Hence, multiple cues seem to be involved in male mating success in this species. Some males performed only one display, however, and may represent an alternate male mating tactic. The protein content of the adult male diet significantly influenced the level of pheromone streak deposition, and thus, foraging environment may affect the outcome of sexual selection. 相似文献

Divergent abdominal bristle patterns in two distantly related drosophilids: antero-posterior variations and sexual dimorphism in a modular trait 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The number of neurosensory bristles on abdominal sternites of Drosophila is a most investigated trait for quantitative genetic studies. However, the developmental pattern expressed on successive segments in both sexes has remained so far a neglected field. We explored three aspects of this general problem with an isofemale line design: comparing two distantly related species, Drosophila melanogaster and Zaprionus indianus, investigating bristle number variation along the antero-posterior axis, and analysing the sexual dimorphism. Antero-posterior variations could be analysed from segment A2 to A7 in females, and A2-A5 in males. In D. melanogaster, males and females showed parallel changes with a consistently lower number in males. In Z. indianus females the number was quite stable along the abdomen, while in males an important antero-posterior increase was found. The sexual dimorphism was further analysed by considering the female-male correlation and the female/male ratio. The results suggest that sternite bristle number is determined by several developmental genetic systems. One is acting along the antero-posterior axis and may be associated to a gradient, since the genetic correlation decreases when more distant segments are compared. Another is acting in the same way on most segments of both sexes, since the female-male genetic correlation is similar between homologous and non-homologous segments. Finally, genes with specific sex effects are acting on A7 in females of both species, and on A5 in Z. indianus males. The overall architecture of female and male abdomen seems to be constrained by the development of reproductive organs. A large difference between species suggests, however, that the sexual dimorphism of abdominal bristle number is not evolutionarily constrained. 相似文献

Esterases from the digestive gland of the snails Lanistes carinatusand Lanistes boltenicollected from four Egyptian governorates were extracted and analyzed using starch gel electrophoresis and five substrates. Twelve esterase bands were detected in both Lanistes species. The esterase bands were distributed in three main zones, which could be classified as acetylesterases, carboxylesterases, and cholinesterases. Depending on the substrate specificity, inhibition properties, and relative mobility of esterase bands, the three zones of esterase activity could be traced to eight genetic loci. Locality-specific loci were found. Inter- and intrapopulation variations are discussed. There is an absence of equilibria at all esterase loci in all populations studied, and a high proportion of genetic diversity in different esterase loci. The absence of interspecific variations proves that Lanistessnails in Egypt belong to one species. 相似文献

Determinants of male courtship success in Drosophila melanogasterwere examined in groups of five males sequentially presented with five individual females. Thirty-three percent of males never mated, while approximately half of the males mated two or three times. Rapid courtship initiation was associated with male success in early matings only. Male size was important for courtship outcome, but the size distributions of mating and nonmating males and their progeny numbers indicate balancing rather than directional selection on size- dependent courtship success. 相似文献
