The spatial distribution of living coccolithophores was studied in the Western-Central Equatorial Pacific Ocean during November–December, 1990 and September–October, 1992. The highest local concentration of coccolithophores occurred at the thermocline in well-stratified waters, but at sea-surface level in dynamic waters. In total, 111 coccolithophore taxa were recognized, some of which exhibited hydrographically controlled variation in their absolute abundance. Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Oolithotus antillarum were abundant in the upwelling front. Most of the lower photic dwellers were abundant in the tropical to subtropical stations regardless of the water stratification. The coccolithophore flora of well-stratified waters could be distinguished from the upwelling front flora by the higher abundance of Umbellosphaera irregularis and lower abundance of G. oceanica. The temperature mixed-water flora was characterized by a high abundance of Emiliania huxleyi. The vertical distribution of all coccolithophore taxa, except three placolith-bearing species, Gephyrocapsa ericsonii, G. oceanica and E. huxleyi, was controlled by upper photic-zone temperature and water stratification. The upper or lower vertical distribution limits of many coccolithophore taxa coincided with the top of the thermocline. The most common 27 taxa were grouped into four ecological groups, Upper Photic-zone Group (UPG), Middle Photic-zone Group (MPG), Lower Photic-zone Group (LPG) and Omnipresent Group (OPG), on the basis of their vertical distribution. By analyzing the hydrographic control on the vertical distribution of these four ecological groups, four ecological assemblages were recognized: High Temperature; Warm Oligotrophic; Warm Eutrophic; and Temperate Mixed-water Assemblages. In equatorial waters, the total coccolithophore assemblage across the photic-zone was controlled by the population in the upper photic-zone. The UPG monopolized the upper photic-zone flora in the High Temperature Assemblage. In the Warn Oligotrophic-water Assemblage, common OPG accompanied abundant UPG in the upper photic-zone. The upper photic-zone of the Warm Eutrophic Assemblage consisted of UPG, MPG and OPG.Emiliania huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica, the major component of OPG, displayed intra-specific morphological variations. G. oceanica Type 1 was restricted to the upper photic-zone of well-stratified oligotrophic waters. Conversely, in these waters E. huxleyi Type C and G. oceanica Type 2 only occurred below the thermocline. These two taxa also coexist with G. oceanica Type 3 and E. huxleyi Type A in the upper photic zone of dynamic waters.  相似文献

The coccolithophore assemblages in two ODP Sites (1237 and 1238) are studied in order to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions in the tropical and equatorial Pacific during the last 800 kyr. Both ODP Sites are located in the two most significant upwelling zones of the tropical and equatorial Pacific: Peru and Equatorial upwelling, respectively. The two sites are considered to have had similar evolutions. The coccolith relative abundance, the nannofossil accumulation rate (NAR) and the N ratio (namely, the proportion of < 3 μm placoliths in relation to Florisphaera profunda) allow us to identify three different intervals. Interval I (0.86-0.45 Ma) and interval III (0.22-0 Ma) are related to weak upwelling and weak Trade Winds, as suggested by coccolithophore assemblages with low N ratios. Interval II (0.45-0.22 Ma), characterized by dominant Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica and very abundant “small” Gephyrocapsa and Gephyrocapsa oceanica, is conversely related to intense upwelling and enhanced Trade Winds.  相似文献

The global warming trend of the latest Oligocene was interrupted by several cooling events associated with Antarctic glaciations. These cooling events affected surface water productivity and plankton assemblages. Well-preserved radiolarians were obtained from upper Oligocene to lower Miocene sediments at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199 Sites 1218 and 1219 in the equatorial Pacific, and 110 radiolarian species were identified.Four episodes of significant radiolarian faunal changes were identified: middle late Oligocene (27.5 to 27.3 Ma), latest Oligocene (24.4 Ma), earliest Miocene (23.3 Ma), and middle early Miocene (21.6 Ma). These four episodes approximately coincide with increases and decreases of biogenic silica accumulation rates and increases in δ18O values coded as “Oi” and “Mi” events. These data indicate that Antarctic glaciations were associated with change of siliceous sedimentation patterns and faunal changes in the equatorial Pacific.Radiolarian fauna was divided into three assemblages based on variations in radiolarian productivity, species richness and the composition of dominant species: a late Oligocene assemblage (27.6 to 24.4 Ma), a transitional assemblage (24.4 to 23.3 Ma) and an early Miocene assemblage (23.3 to 21.2 Ma). The late Oligocene assemblage is characterized by relatively high productivity, low species richness and four dominant species of Tholospyris anthophora, Stichocorys subligata, Lophocyrtis nomas and Lithelius spp. The transitional assemblage represents relatively low values of productivity and species richness, and consists of three dominant species of T. anthophora, S. subligata and L. nomas. The characteristics of the early Miocene assemblage are relatively low productivity, but high species richness. The two dominant species present in this assemblage are T. anthophora and Cyrtocapsella tetrapera. The most significant faunal turnover of radiolarians is marked at the boundary between the transitional/early Miocene assemblages.We also reviewed changes in other microfossil assemblages in the low latitudes during the late Oligocene through early Miocene. The microfossil assemblages of major groups show sequential changes near the Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) boundary (23.8 Ma). Many extinction events and some first occurrences of calcareous nannofossils and many occurrences of radiolarians are found from about 24.8 to 23.3 Ma, and first occurrences of planktic foraminifers and diatoms followed from 23.2 through 22 Ma. Hence, the O/M boundary is identified as a significant level for microfossil evolutions.  相似文献

The distribution and size fractions of chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean in boreal autumn were investigated during October and November, 2011. Environmental factors, including hydrology and nutrients, that might affect the distribution and size composition were analyzed. A total of 18 stations including 11 CTD stations and 7 navigation stations were selected which stretch from the northwest coast of South America to the area of the central Pacific Ocean south of the Hawaiian Islands (2.77°S–13.02°N, 84.11–154.02°W). The studied area can be divided into two transects: the 6°N transect (124–148°W) and the154°W transect (10–13°N). Results showed that the surface Chl a concentration was higher in the east near the northwest coast of South America (>0.200 mg/m3) and lower in the west (0.100–0.200 mg/m3), and it presented a highly significant negative correlation with sea surface temperature (p < 0.001). There were some differences between the sectional distribution of Chl a concentration between the 6°N and 154°W transects. The high values of Chl a concentration occurred near the surface along the 6°N transect (0–75 m), while they were relatively deeper along the 154°W transect (50–100 m). Iron might be the factor that limited the growth of phytoplankton in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. Picophytoplankton (Pico) was the dominant taxa in the surveyed area, particularly in the waters along the two transects (>70% of total Chl a). The Pico to total Chl a ratio was higher in the upper layer (>70%) than in the deeper layer.  相似文献

Phascolosoma agassizii, a commonly reported species of sipunculan worm, occurs at various depths throughout the north Pacific. However, previous studies have shown that this nominal species is actually comprised of two genetically divergent lineages. Phascolosoma agassizii is isolated to the eastern Pacific, whereas a second species, here referred to Phascolosoma sp., is located in the western Pacific and represents a unique, non-sister taxon to P. agassizii. Both species exhibit the same developmental mode with a long-lived, planktotrophic, pelagosphera larval stage, which may facilitate long-distance dispersal, although developmental timing differs. Using an inter-simple sequence repeat polymerase chain reaction (ISSR-PCR) genetic fingerprinting approach, this study examines non-coding polymorphic regions of the nuclear genomes of P. agassizii from four eastern Pacific populations and of Phascolosoma sp. from six western Pacific locations. Small-scale spatial genetic variation was analysed separately for each coastline using an Analysis of Molecular Variance. The data pointed to the potential presence of fine-scale genetic structure within P. agassizii, and recovered significant genetic structure within Phascolosoma sp. from the western Pacific. This study shows that ISSR-PCR is a relatively fast and cost-effective way to study fine-scale genetic diversity in marine invertebrates, although possible analyses and interpretations of the data are subject to the same limitations as other size polymorphism-based approaches.  相似文献

角质颚是研究头足类渔业生态学的重要材料.基于2018年9—11月中国鱿钓船在西北太平洋生产调查期间采集的268尾北方拟黵乌贼样本,对其角质颚外部形态生长特性进行了研究.主成分分析表明: 北方拟黵乌贼角质颚的上头盖长(UHL)、上脊突长(UCL)、上喙长(URL)、下头盖长(LHL)、下脊突长(LCL)和下喙长(LRL)可作为研究其角质颚外形变化的特征因子.协方差分析表明: 各特征因子与胴长和体重的生长关系在性别间均不存显著性差异.赤池信息准则分析显示: UHL、LHL与胴长生长的关系最适于用幂函数表示,UCL、URL、LCL与胴长生长的关系最适于用对数函数表示,而LRL与胴长生长的关系则最适于用线性函数表示;各特征参数与体重生长的关系,除LHL最适于用幂函数表示外,其余均最适于用对数函数表示.外形特征因子生长模型的确定,为北方拟黵乌贼的资源评估等研究打下科学基础.  相似文献

Uni- and multivariate analyses were made of nine morphological characters on three species of finches Nesospiza acunhae (Inaccessible, Nightingale), N. wilkinsi (Nightingale) and Rowettia goughensis (Gough). The results of the univariate analysis were used to test four predictions about morphological changes with altered competitive backgrounds. Finch species that occur alone on an island or on an island where other finch species are rare have longer characters and more variable character distributions.
A multivariate analysis of six bill characters showed that the bill of Rowettia is more similar to that of acunhae than either is to wilkinsi. A multivariate analysis on wing length, tarsus length and hallux length shows that Rowettia is morphologically closer to wilkinsi than it is to acunhae. It is suggested that nothing is gained by treating the Gough I. finch as belonging to a monotypic genus.  相似文献

Coccolith fluxes were investigated by sediment trap studies in the West Caroline Basin, which is located in the equatorial western Pacific. The investigation was conducted from June 1991 to March 1992 at two water depths, 1592 and 3902 m, as part of the Northwest Pacific Carbon Cycle Study (NOPACCS) program. Two seasonal maxima of coccolith fluxes were observed during September–early October and late December–January. The average coccolith and coccosphere fluxes at the depth of the shallow trap were 1800×106 coccoliths m−2 day−1 and 1.9×106 coccospheres m−2 day−1, respectively. The flux of coccoliths followed the same trend as the total flux, and was closely correlated with the flux of organic matter flux. Florisphaera profunda, Gladiolithus flabellatus, Gephyrocapsa oceanica, Umbilicosphaera sibogae var. sibogae, Emiliania huxleyi, and Oolithotus fragilis were the most abundant species together comprising more than 85% of the total flora. Observed seasonal changes of the species composition of coccolith flora, as well as analysis of the R-mode cluster, revealed that during the summer, the assemblage was marked by the dominance of G. oceanica and U. sibogae. However, during the winter, the assemblage was dominated by E. huxleyi and O. fragilis. These assemblage changes were influenced by monsoonal events, which were observed off the New Guinea coast. F. profunda dominated the community in the shallow trap throughout most of the year; peak values of this species were recorded during the winter. The coccosphere assemblage was dominated by G. oceanica at both water depths. In the deep trap, the sedimentation pattern was similar to that observed at the shallow depth. Mean coccolith and coccosphere fluxes at the deep trap were 2000×106 coccolith m−2 day−1 and 0.08×106 coccospheres m−2 day−1, respectively. The increase in coccolith flux with water depth suggests a lateral influx. The estimated average daily mass of CaCO3 flux in coccoliths and coccospheres was 16.6 mg m−2 day−1 at the 1592 m trap and 17.9 mg m−2 day−1 at the 3902 m trap, respectively. These calculated values contributed only 23.3% to the total CaCO3 flux at the shallow trap and 27.9% at the deep trap.  相似文献

We have investigated the distribution of sequences homologous to Bari-1, a Tc1-like transposable element first identified in Drosophila melanogaster, in 87 species of the Drosophila genus. We have also isolated and sequenced Bari-1 homologues from D. simulans, D. mauritiana, and D. sechellia, the species constituting with D. melanogaster the melanogaster complex, and from D. diplacantha and D. erecta, two phylogenetically more distant species of the melanogaster group. Within the melanogaster complex the Bari-1 elements are extremely similar to each other, showing nucleotide identity values of at least 99.3%. In contrast, Bari-1-like elements from D. diplacantha and D. erecta are on average only 70% similar to D. melanogaster Bari-1 and are usually defective due to nucleotide deletions and/or insertions in the ORFs encoding their transposases. In D. erecta the defective copies are all located in the chromocenter and on chromosome 4. Surprisingly, while D. melanogaster Bari-1 elements possess 26-bp inverted terminal repeats, their D. diplacantha and D. erecta homologues possess long inverted terminal repeats similar to the terminal structures observed in the S elements of D. melanogaster and in several other Tc1-like elements of different organisms. This finding, together with the nucleotide and amino acid identity level between D. diplacantha and D. erecta elements and Bari-1 of D. melanogaster, suggests a common evolutionary origin and a rapid diversification of the termini of these Drosophila Tc1-like elements.  相似文献

Planktonic foraminifera from a continuous Oligocene succession with clear magnetochronology and sediment cycles at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1218 (equatorial Pacific Ocean) were studied in the interval from 27 to 30 Ma. Paragloborotalia taxa are common and we examined their size, relative abundance, and stable isotopes. Multispecies stable isotope data indicate the depth habitats of Oligocene planktonic foraminifera and suggest that “Globoquadrinavenezuelana and Dentoglobigerina globularis were probably mixed-layer dwellers, with paragloborotaliids recording heavier δ18O signatures consistent with a thermocline habitat. Cyclic variations in the abundance of Paragloborotalia match eccentricity (100 kyr) variations in percent carbonate and δ13C, suggesting orbitally forced upwelling in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and that Paragloborotalia were responding directly to changes in surface water productivity. The high-resolution biostratigraphy calibrated to the magnetochronology constrains the extinction of Paragloborotalia opima which marks the top of Planktonic Foraminifera Biozone O5 (P21b) at 27.456 Ma. The highest occurrence of P. opima is associated with a 50% size decrease in Paragloborotalia pseudocontinuosa taxa within Chron 9n. In addition, we find the extinction of Chiloguembelina cubensis is consistent with other deep-sea sections within Chron 10n at 28.426 Ma marking the O4/O5 (P21a/P21b) boundary.  相似文献

In an attempt to clarify the taxonomy of the polymorphic maritime lichens of theRamalina siliquosa group in Europe, variation was analyzed in visible and chemical characteristics of 1042 specimens from four localities (one station each in Scotland, Wales, England, and Brittany). The plants belong to six major chemical types representing a replacement series of closely related medullary depsidones. There is a broad correlation of chemical and visible traits. The narrower-lobed often basally blackened individuals (corresponding approximately to the usual concept of “R. curnowii”) produce no medullary constituents nor norstictic or stictic acids. The broader-lobed unblackened ones (corresponding approximately to the usual concept of “R. siliquosa”) produce stictic, salazinic, protocetraric, or hypoprotocetraric acids. The proportion of each chemical type in the four populations studied varies markedly. The southern (English and French) populations together contain all six chemical variants in roughly similar proportions. However, to the north, in Wales and Scotland, the populations become simpler as some chemical races drop out and salazinic acid-producing plants predominate. These findings correlate well with the general geographic distribution of the chemical variants from a study of 117 herbarium specimens. The chemically distinct plants have different amplitudes of ecologic tolerance which appear to regulate niche selection in theRamalina zone, the conspicuous vegetational belt which these lichens form above the intertidal zone on the Atlantic and Baltic coasts of Europe. The complex is interpreted as a set of six species differing to an extent by visible traits but primarily by chemical, geographical, and ecological ones. Three of the species are new:Ramalina atlantica Culb.,R. stenoclada Culb., andR. druidarum Culb. A hypothetical scheme is suggested to explain the evolutionary origin of the species recognized.  相似文献

Two species of field mice, Apodemus argenteus and A. speciosus, occur in sympatry across the Japanese archipelago. The inter- and intraspecific patterns of morphological differentiation have been evaluated, using a Fourier analysis of the mandible outline. The relative importance of the effect of insular isolation and latitudinal climatic gradient on the size and shape of the two species was assessed by a comparison of the populations from the large island of Honshu and the surrounding small-island populations. The size variation in A. argenteus is correlated with the climatic gradient whilst the shape variation corresponds mainly to a random differentiation of the small-island populations from a Honshu-like basic morphological pattern. A. speciosus displays increased size on small islands, and its shape variation is related to both the climatic gradient and insularity. Finally, the two species are differentiated by both the size and shape of the mandible across the Japanese archipelago, suggesting that interspecific competition between both species is reduced via niche partitioning. Our results emphasize the importance of insular isolation on shape differentiation, but a part of the morphological differentiation is also related to the latitudinal climatic gradient. Isolation on small islands could have favoured such a response to environmental factors by lowering the gene flow that prevents almost any significant differentiation within Honshu populations.  相似文献

The nuclear DNA contents of 22 salmonid taxa, estimated primarily by flow-cytometric analysis relative to a chicken internal standard, were evaluated to compare intra- and interspecific variation in DNA content within this fish family. The average variability within taxa exceeded that among taxa. Intraspecific genome-size variation was substantial and, in some cases, exceeded the mean genome size for the species. The flow-cytometric method used here allows for rapid and reliable comparison of nuclear DNA contents within and among individuals from natural animal populations.  相似文献

Water collected on the spring equatorial Pacific Joint GlobalOcean Flux Study (JGOFS) was placed in ultra-clean bottles inan incubator on deck under the direction of the team of J.H.Martin.Half of the bottles were enriched with 2.53 mM iron; the otherhalf served as controls. Cell counts increased, while the numberof species was reduced, in both the controls and the treatedsamples over the period of the experiment. Diatoms dominated,and after an early growth spurt in the Fe-enriched bottles,most diatom species showed greater growth in the controls atthe end of the 6 day experiment. However, as the experimentwas terminated, more cells overall were noted in the Fe-enrichedsamples, with the most abundant diatom, Cylindrotheca closterium.principally responsible for the difference. Growth rates werehigh in both the controls and the treated samples, with overallrates of 1.3–3.0 divisions day–1 in the Fe-treatedsamples and 1.9–3.4 divisions day–1 in the controls.The group of smaller pennate diatoms averaged 2.9 divisionsday–1 in the Fe-treated samples and 3.3 divisions day–1in the controls over the entire experiment.  相似文献

Aggressive interactions, foraging behavior, habitat use and diet were studied in sympatric populations of white-sported char,Salvelinus leucomaenis, and Dolly Varden,Salvelinus malma, in a Japanese mountain stream. Underwater observations on individuals of both species revealed two distinct behavioral regimes: aggressive drift foragers and non-aggressive benthos foragers. Aggressive drift foragers defended partial territories around focal points from which they made forays to capture invertebrates drifting in the water column. Non-aggressive benthos foragers cruised around and beneath cobble in large foraging ranges that overlapped each other. Intra- and interspecific, size-dependent dominance hierarchies were recognized among aggressive drift foragers, whereas non-aggressive benthos foragers showed no such relationships. Terrestrial invertebrates were the most abundant prey in the diets of drift foragers, whereas a very small proportion of the diet of benthos foragers was made up of these taxa. Benthos foragers showed more complex diet composition than drift foragers. These results suggest that non-aggressive benthos foragers may avoid not only interference but also exploitative competition by using alternative foraging tactics. The proportion of drift foragers to benthos foragers among white-spotted char was more than 35 times that among Dolly Varden. The significant difference in the proportion of each species using the two types of foraging strategy results in interspecific food segregation in sympatric populations.  相似文献

Detailed analysis of the morphology of Florisphaera profunda from plankton samples collected at three sites in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans reveals wide variation in this deep ocean-dwelling coccolithophore. In addition to the two varieties described previously, we found a third distinctive form, Florisphaera profunda var. rhinocera var. nov. All three varieties occur at each of the sampling sites. The analysis of monthly samples from different levels in the lower photic zone (LPZ) (100–200?m) at the Hawaii Ocean Time series station suggests that the varieties have similar distributions, which are correlated to primary productivity and the availability of light. The analysis of coccolith and coccosphere size in F. profunda reveals the existence of several size modes in Florisphaera profunda var. profunda and F. profunda var. elongata. The biological significance of these modes, or morphotypes is not known. However, their co-occurrence in single samples from different oceanic areas suggests that they are not ecophenotypes. In the light of recent molecular genetic analyses of intraspecific groups within commonly occurring coccolithophores, the varieties and size morphotypes of F. profunda are of significant interest for the study of marine phytoplankton biodiversity. Coccolithophores inhabiting the LPZ may be adapted to the low light, high nutrient conditions of this layer and hold great potential as a means to reconstruct past oceanographic conditions such as the position of the nutricline. However, coccolithophore biodiversity in the LPZ is poorly documented and the number of species may be much higher than previously thought.  相似文献
