The spatial distribution of living coccolithophores was studied in the Western-Central Equatorial Pacific Ocean during November–December, 1990 and September–October, 1992. The highest local concentration of coccolithophores occurred at the thermocline in well-stratified waters, but at sea-surface level in dynamic waters. In total, 111 coccolithophore taxa were recognized, some of which exhibited hydrographically controlled variation in their absolute abundance. Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Oolithotus antillarum were abundant in the upwelling front. Most of the lower photic dwellers were abundant in the tropical to subtropical stations regardless of the water stratification. The coccolithophore flora of well-stratified waters could be distinguished from the upwelling front flora by the higher abundance of Umbellosphaera irregularis and lower abundance of G. oceanica. The temperature mixed-water flora was characterized by a high abundance of Emiliania huxleyi. The vertical distribution of all coccolithophore taxa, except three placolith-bearing species, Gephyrocapsa ericsonii, G. oceanica and E. huxleyi, was controlled by upper photic-zone temperature and water stratification. The upper or lower vertical distribution limits of many coccolithophore taxa coincided with the top of the thermocline. The most common 27 taxa were grouped into four ecological groups, Upper Photic-zone Group (UPG), Middle Photic-zone Group (MPG), Lower Photic-zone Group (LPG) and Omnipresent Group (OPG), on the basis of their vertical distribution. By analyzing the hydrographic control on the vertical distribution of these four ecological groups, four ecological assemblages were recognized: High Temperature; Warm Oligotrophic; Warm Eutrophic; and Temperate Mixed-water Assemblages. In equatorial waters, the total coccolithophore assemblage across the photic-zone was controlled by the population in the upper photic-zone. The UPG monopolized the upper photic-zone flora in the High Temperature Assemblage. In the Warn Oligotrophic-water Assemblage, common OPG accompanied abundant UPG in the upper photic-zone. The upper photic-zone of the Warm Eutrophic Assemblage consisted of UPG, MPG and OPG.Emiliania huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica, the major component of OPG, displayed intra-specific morphological variations. G. oceanica Type 1 was restricted to the upper photic-zone of well-stratified oligotrophic waters. Conversely, in these waters E. huxleyi Type C and G. oceanica Type 2 only occurred below the thermocline. These two taxa also coexist with G. oceanica Type 3 and E. huxleyi Type A in the upper photic zone of dynamic waters.  相似文献

Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) W. W. Hay et H. Mohler is a cosmopolitan coccolithophore occurring from tropical to subpolar waters and exhibiting variations in morphology of coccoliths possibly related to environmental conditions. We examined morphological characters of coccoliths and partial mitochondrial sequences of the cytochrome oxidase 1b (cox1b) through adenosine triphosphate synthase 4 (atp4) genes of 39 clonal E. huxleyi strains from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Mediterranean Sea, and their adjacent seas. Based on the morphological study of culture strains by SEM, Type O, a new morphotype characterized by coccoliths with an open central area, was separated from existing morphotypes A, B, B/C, C, R, and var. corona, characterized by coccoliths with central area elements. Molecular phylogenetic studies revealed that E. huxleyi consists of at least two mitochondrial sequence groups with different temperature preferences/tolerances: a cool‐water group occurring in subarctic North Atlantic and Pacific and a warm‐water group occurring in the subtropical Atlantic and Pacific and in the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

In this study the coccolithophore compositions of 11 plankton depth stations along a N–S transect from the South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre to the Subantarctic Zone were examined qualitatively and quantitatively. The lateral and vertical distribution patterns of not only the most abundant taxa but also of the morphotypes of distinct species complexes, such as Calcidiscus leptoporus, Emiliania huxleyi, and Umbellosphaera tenuis were the focus. Geographic variation among morphotypes mirrors different ecological affinities of the members of a species complex. Multivariate statistics were used to infer the relationship between a set of known environmental data and species concentrations. The results of the detrended Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) revealed the presence of distinct species assemblages. The Subtropical Gyre assemblage within the upper 50 m of the photic zone is mainly composed of Umbellosphaera irregularis, U. tenuis types III and IV, Discosphaera tubifera, Rhabdosphaera clavigera, S. pulchra and E. huxleyi var. corona, adapted to warm and oligotrophic conditions. In the deeper photic zone abundant Florisphaera profunda, Gephyrocapsa ericsonii and Oolithotus spp. are encountered, benefiting from higher nutrient concentrations in the vicinity of the nutricline. A well-defined Subtropical Frontal Zone (STFZ) association is clearly dominated by E. huxleyi types A and C throughout the upper 100 m of the water column. Secondary contributors in the upper photic zone are Syracosphaera spp. (mainly S. histrica, S. molischii), Michaelsarsia elegans, Ophiaster spp. and U. tenuis type II. This assemblage is associated with cooler, nutrient-rich waters. E. huxleyi type B is found deeper in the water column. Here it is accompanied by Algirosphaera robusta, G. muellerae, and S. anthos indicating a tolerance of lower light availability in environments with elevated productivity. C. leptoporus spp. leptoporus shows relatively high cell numbers in all sampled water levels throughout the STFZ. Interestingly, its coccoliths are often smaller 5 μm in lith diameter. The mean coccolithophore assemblages of a station were compared to the underlying surface sediment assemblages. For the most part, the distribution of the morphotypes is reflected in the sedimentary archive, thus proving their potential as paleoecological proxies.  相似文献

A high-resolution history of paleoceanographic changes in the subpolar waters of the southern margin of the Subtropical Convergence Zone during the last 130 kyr, is present in foraminiferal assemblages of DSDP Site 594. The foraminifera indicate that sea-surface temperatures during the Last Interglacial Climax were warmer than today, and that between substage 5d through to the end of isotope stage 2, temperatures were mostly cooler than Holocene temperatures. The paleotemperatures suggest that (1) the Subtropical Convergence was located over the site during substage 5e, later moving further north, then moving southwards to near the site during the Holocene, and (2) the Polar Front was positioned over the Site during glacial stages 6, 4, 2 and possibly parts of stage 3. Several major events are indicated by the nannofloral assemblages during these large changes in sea-surface temperature and associated reorganization of ocean circulation. First, the time-progressive trends between E. huxleyi and medium to large Gephyrocapsa are unique to this site, with E. huxleyi dominating over medium Gephyrocapsa during stages 5c-a, middle part of stage 4 and after the middle point of stage 3. This unusual trend may (at least partly) be caused by the shift of the Polar Front across the site. Second, upwelling flora (E. huxleyi and small placoliths) increase in abundance during stages 1, 3 and 5, suggesting that upwelling or disturbance of water stratification took place during the interglacials. Thirdly, there are no significant differences between the distribution patterns of the various morphotypes of medium to large Gephyrocapsa, and the combined value of all medium Gephyrocapsa increases in abundance during glacials (stages 2 and 4 and the end of stage 6), similar to the abundance trends in benthic foraminifera. Finally, subordinate nannofossil taxa also show distinctive. climatic trends during the last glacial cycle: (1) Syracosphaera spp. are present in increased abundance during warmer extremes in climate (substages 5e, 5a, and stage 1); (2) Coccolithus pelagicus and Calcidiscus leptoporus dominate the subordinate nannofossil taxa, and their relative proportions seem to provide a useful paleoceanographic index, with C. pelagicus dominating when the Polar Front Zone is over the site (stages 6, 4 and 2), whilst C. leptoporus is relatively more abundant when the STC is positioned over the site (stages 1 and 5e). Increased abundance of C. pelagicus also can indicate intensified coastal upwelling.  相似文献

Four classes of microscopic cuticular hair organs were found on the chelae of Homarus americanus (Milne-Edwards). Type I and Type II organs possess long single sensillae, 30–60 μm and 70–130 μm, respectively. Type III organs are toroid bumps 20–30 μm in diameter, with a small tuft of fibers projecting from the center. Type IV organs are small conical hairs ≈ 1 μm in length.Type IV organs were uniformly distributed over the claws. The distributions of Types I, II, and III organs were analysed through multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with respect to claw, side, and area. Type I organs showed significance of the three-way interaction only. Type II organs showed significance of side, area, and the claw by area interaction. Type III organs showed significance of area, and all interactions. Changes in number and density of Types I, II and III organs, and in number of Type IV organs, were found with growth.  相似文献

A survey of 123 species of fishes from southeastern Queensland during 1975 revealed in 47 species nine distinct larval types of ascaridoid nematodes: Anisakis Type I, Terranova Types I and II, Contracaecum Types I and II, and Thynnascaris Types I, II, III and IV. These larvae are described and figured.  相似文献

Intraspecific niche differentiation can contribute to population persistence in changing environments. Following declines in large predatory fish, eutrophication, and climate change, there has been a major increase in the abundance of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in the Baltic Sea. Two morphotype groups with different levels of body armor—completely plated and incompletely plated—are common in coastal Baltic Sea habitats. The morphotypes are similar in shape, size, and other morphological characteristics and live as one apparently intermixed population. Variation in resource use between the groups could indicate a degree of niche segregation that could aid population persistence in the face of further environmental change. To assess whether morphotypes exhibit niche segregation associated with resource and/or habitat exploitation and predator avoidance, we conducted a field survey of stickleback morphotypes, and biotic and abiotic ecosystem structure, in two habitat types within shallow coastal bays in the Baltic Sea: deeper central waters and shallow near‐shore waters. In the deeper waters, the proportion of completely plated stickleback was greater in habitats with greater biomass of two piscivorous fish: perch (Perca fluviatilis) and pike (Esox lucius). In the shallow waters, the proportion of completely plated stickleback was greater in habitats with greater coverage of habitat‐forming vegetation. Our results suggest niche segregation between morphotypes, which may contribute to the continued success of stickleback in coastal Baltic Sea habitats.  相似文献

The distribution of living coccolithophores in the California Current system of southern California at 10 m water depth was investigated on two dates in March and June, 1982. Six closely spaced stations were sampled in March, of which three were resampled in June. Thirty-six euphotic species were identified of which four,Emiliania huxleyi, Umbilicosphaera sibogae, Gephyrocapsa oceanica, andRhabdosphaera longistylis, respectively, were the most abundant. Both the “cold” and “warm” morphotypes ofE. huxleyi were present, in varying proportions. Large ranges in community structure, diversity (0.35–2.64 natural bels), and standing crop (1.0 × 104–6.2 × 105cells/l) were recorded. This range of end-member values is approximately that found in the open ocean from 0° to about 65° latitude. The distributions of four coccolithophore assemblages recognized in March samples from the Borderland area appear to reflect the following distinct water masses: (1) California Current; (2) Southern California Counter Current; (3) Transitional Zone; (4) Near Shore. The coccolithophore assemblages from the June stations were more uniform, indicating that the Borderland was experiencing more stable conditions than in March.  相似文献

Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis was used as a molecular tool to determine the diversity and to monitor population dynamics of viruses that infect the globally important coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi. We exploited variations in the major capsid protein gene from E. huxleyi-specific viruses to monitor their genetic diversity during an E. huxleyi bloom in a mesocosm experiment off western Norway. We reveal that, despite the presence of several virus genotypes at the start of an E. huxleyi bloom, only a few virus genotypes eventually go on to kill the bloom.  相似文献

In this study we used denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, sequencing analysis, and analytical flow cytometry to monitor the dynamics and genetic richness of Emiliania huxleyi isolates and cooccurring viruses during two mesocosm experiments in a Norwegian fjord in 2000 and 2003. We exploited variations in a gene encoding a protein with calcium-binding motifs (GPA) and in the major capsid protein (MCP) gene to assess allelic and genotypic richness within E. huxleyi and E. huxleyi-specific viruses (EhVs), respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first report that shows the effectiveness of the GPA gene for analysis of natural communities of E. huxleyi. Our results revealed the existence of a genetically rich, yet stable E. huxleyi and EhV community in the fjordic environment. Incredibly, the same virus and host genotypes dominated in separate studies conducted 3 years apart. Both E. huxleyi-dominated blooms contained the same six E. huxleyi alleles. In addition, despite the presence of at least six and four EhV genotypes at the start of the blooms in 2000 and 2003, respectively, the same two virus genotypes dominated the naturally occurring infections during the exponential and termination phases of the blooms in both years.  相似文献

The morphological differentiation and taxonomic treatment of lowland and high-mountain morphotypes within the Solidago virgaurea group are controversial. To clarify the taxonomic status of these taxa, we conducted a morphometric analysis of 1,746 individuals from 80 localities along an altitudinal gradient from the lowlands of northern Poland to the Carpathians and Sudetes of southern Poland. Multivariate morphometric analyses, cluster analyses and principal component analyses, were used to examine the morphological differentiation within the S. virgaurea group in Poland. Canonical discriminant analysis was applied to determine the morphological characters that best discriminate among the taxa. The stability of the high-mountain Solidago minuta morphotype was tested in an experimental field established in lowland Poland; individuals transplanted from various mountain sites were cultivated at this site, and the morphotypes remained stable in terms of their floral and vegetative characters. Multivariate analyses revealed two morphologically distinct taxa in the S. virgaurea group, which correspond to lowland S. virgaurea s. str. and high-mountain S. minuta as recognised in some European floras. The most important morphological characters for distinguishing the taxa are the number of tubular florets per capitulum, inner involucral bract width and involucre height. Vegetative and inflorescence characters appear to have less taxonomic value because they changed continuously with altitude. A key for identifying S. virgaurea and S. minuta in Poland is presented.  相似文献

The 1952 observation of host-induced non-hereditary variation in bacteriophages by Salvador Luria and Mary Human led to the discovery in the 1960s of modifying enzymes that glucosylate hydroxymethylcytosine in T-even phages and of genes encoding corresponding host activities that restrict non-glucosylated phage DNA: rglA and rglB (restricts glucoseless phage). In the 1980’s, appreciation of the biological scope of these activities was dramatically expanded with the demonstration that plant and animal DNA was also sensitive to restriction in cloning experiments. The rgl genes were renamed mcrA and mcrBC (modified cytosine restriction). The new class of modification-dependent restriction enzymes was named Type IV, as distinct from the familiar modification-blocked Types I–III. A third Escherichia coli enzyme, mrr (modified DNA rejection and restriction) recognizes both methylcytosine and methyladenine. In recent years, the universe of modification-dependent enzymes has expanded greatly. Technical advances allow use of Type IV enzymes to study epigenetic mechanisms in mammals and plants. Type IV enzymes recognize modified DNA with low sequence selectivity and have emerged many times independently during evolution. Here, we review biochemical and structural data on these proteins, the resurgent interest in Type IV enzymes as tools for epigenetic research and the evolutionary pressures on these systems.  相似文献

Type IV pili are extracellular polymers of the major pilin subunit. These subunits are held together in the pilus filament by hydrophobic interactions among their N-terminal α-helices, which also anchor the pilin subunits in the inner membrane prior to pilus assembly. Type IV pilus assembly involves a conserved group of proteins that span the envelope of Gram-negative bacteria. Among these is a set of minor pilins, so named because they share their hydrophobic N-terminal polymerization/membrane anchor segment with the major pilins but are much less abundant. Minor pilins influence pilus assembly and retraction, but their precise functions are not well defined. The Type IV pilus systems of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholerae are among the simplest of Type IV pilus systems and possess only a single minor pilin. Here we show that the enterotoxigenic E. coli minor pilins CofB and LngB are required for assembly of their respective Type IV pili, CFA/III and Longus. Low levels of the minor pilins are optimal for pilus assembly, and CofB can be detected in the pilus fraction. We solved the 2.0 Å crystal structure of N-terminally truncated CofB, revealing a pilin-like protein with an extended C-terminal region composed of two discrete domains connected by flexible linkers. The C-terminal region is required for CofB to initiate pilus assembly. We propose a model for CofB-initiated pilus assembly with implications for understanding filament growth in more complex Type IV pilus systems as well as the related Type II secretion system.  相似文献

The seasonal savannas dominated by the C4 grasses of the genus Trachypogon, are widespread in northern South America. In Venezuela, they extend from the central lowland Llanos to intermediate elevations in the Coastal and Andean Mountains and to the Guiana Plateau (Gran Sabana) in the south. This study aims to classify these savannas and to understand the environmental factors that determine their composition and structure. Thirty-seven sites were sampled, plant cover and density were measured in 376 one square meter quadrats and the importance value index (IVI) was calculated. Climate data were obtained from climatological stations and soil properties were analyzed. The results were classified by clustering and TWINSPAN. Floristic and environmental data were ordered with the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA).Trachypogon savannas are heterogeneous, both floristically and environmentally. An altitudinal gradient of 2000 m separates the intermediate elevation Coastal Mountains (Type I) and the Guiana savannas (Type II) from the lowland Llanos. In the lowlands, sparsely covered and treeless communities on extremely oligotrophic and sandy soils (Type IV) differ structurally and floristically from woody savannas (Type III). The floristics and structure of the savannas respond directly or indirectly to elevation and water and nutrient availability. These responses were evidenced by: (a) floristic composition, as Neotropical lowland savanna species merged with those of the Andean sub-páramo in Type I savannas or with those from the Guianan flora in Type II savannas. (b) Species richness, which ranged from an average of 13.8 per site in sandy Type IV savannas to 38.9 per site in Type I intermediate elevation savannas. (c) Community physiognomy, which changes from an homogeneous herbaceous matrix with dispersed trees in Type III savannas to a shrubby Type I savannas to “treeless” Types II and IV savannas. (d) Plant cover which varied from 93.8% in the fertile Type I savannas to around 80% in the sandy oligotrophic savannas of Types II and IV. Each savanna type is related to one of the major geomorphological regions of Venezuela.  相似文献

In a previous study, a total of 484 endophytic fungi were isolated and purified from seven populations of Achnatherum sibiricum (L.) Keng collected at six geographical locations in Inner Mongolia, China. Based on growth rates as well as morphological characteristics, the isolates were classified into five morphotypes. Among them, morphotypes A, B and C were ascribed to the same species, Neotyphodium chisosum, based on ITS sequences. Morphotype E was identified as Epichloë amarillans. In the present study, four morphotypes, A, B, C and E, belonging to two species, were chosen for an in vitro pathogen trial. The results showed that both endophyte colonies and endophyte filtrate of all morphotypes could inhibit the mycelia growth and spore germination of the pathogen fungi tested. The magnitude of inhibition varied not only between species, but also among morphotypes of the same species. Overall, the antifungal ability of E. amarillans (morphotype E) was higher than that of N. chisosum. Within N. chisosum, the antifungal ability was highest in morphotype C, followed by morphotype A, and lowest in morphotype B. This variability suggests that different morphotypes might represent different genotypes of endophyte. The effect of endophyte infection on the host grass should be examined not only on the species level but also on the morphotype level to determine the possible interactions.  相似文献

Summary Pituitaries from normal, young and adult male rats were fixed either in sublimate-formalin or in glutaraldehyde-osmium. In adjacent Paraplast sections, almost all the gonadotrophs were immunostained with both LH and FSH antisera. The rat LH and FSH antisera used were shown to be highly specific by the absorption test and by double antibody radioimmunoassay. Thin and thick adjacent Epon sections were prepared for EM and immunohistochemical examination. Cells stained with the rat LH antiserum were identified by LM, and then observed in detail by EM. On the basis of these observations we suggest that the LH cells are arranged in a sequence of basophils, i.e., Types II/III, III, III/IV and IV: Type II/III basophils are elongate with a cytoplasmic process and less vesiculated. They have morphological features of Type II (classical thyrotrophs) and also of Type III basophils. Type III basophils are oval in shape and moderately vesiculated. Both Types II/III and III basophils can be divided into two classes of cell characterized mainly by the existence of only small secretory granules (150–220 nm in diameter) (Type A) or by the coexistence of small and large (350–500 nm) (Type B). Type III/IV basophils are cells intermediate between types III and IV basophils, and moderately vesiculated with an abundance of secretory granules (150–300 nm in diameter). Type IV basophils are large, spherical or oval cells whose RER cisternae are conspicuously dilated; they contain less numerous secretory granules (150–300 nm in diameter). It is concluded that LH cells are not a single cell type, but include a wide range of subtypes.  相似文献

A seasonal morphological variability is observed in Emiliania huxleyi var. huxleyi specimens, collected from discrete water samples in the Aegean Sea. Biometric analyses reveal a consistent pattern of increase in the size of coccoliths and coccospheres, including the thickness of the inner tube elements (INT), in winter/spring time low sea surface temperature and moderate productivity samples when compared with summer time high temperature-low productivity samples. The small range of salinity change in the Aegean Sea and the absence of seasonal pattern in nutrient content do not support any association with the observed increase in E. huxleyi coccolith size. A relatively increased [HCO3-] content is observed during spring-time interval related with the increase in the coccolith size, however it remains unclear which parameter of the carbonate system causes the observed effects.  相似文献

This study aims to contribute to a more detailed knowledge of the biogeography of coccolithophores in the Equatorial and Southeastern Pacific Ocean. Census data of fossil coccoliths are presented in a suite of core-top sediment samples from 15°N to 50.6°S and from 71°W to 93°W. Following standard preparation of smear slides, a total of 19 taxa are recognized in light microscopy and their relative abundances are determined for 134 surface sediment samples. Considering the multivariate character of oceanic conditions and their effects on phytoplankton, a Factor Analysis was performed and three factors were retained. Factor 1, dominated by Florisphaera profunda and Gephyrocapsa oceanica, includes samples located under warm water masses and indicates the occurrence of calcite dissolution in the water column in the area offshore Chile. Factor 2 is related to cold, low-salinity surface-water masses from the Chilean upwelling, and is dominated by Emiliania huxleyi, Gephyrocapsa sp. < 3 μm, Coccolithus pelagicus and Gephyrocapsa muellerae. Factor 3 is linked to more saline, coastal upwelling areas where Calcidiscus leptoporus and Helicosphaera carteri are the dominant species.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) types based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)patterns with HaeIII were investigated in clinical isolates of Sporothrix schenckii in China. In addition to 23 mtDNA types (Types 1–23) so far reported, a new mtDNA type (Type 24) was found in this study. Type 24 was divided into two subtypes, Subtype 24A and 24B based on RFLP with EcoRV. Sixty-seven isolates in China consisted of 58 isolates of Type 4, 5 of Type 6, 1 of Type 5, 1 of Type 20 and 2 of Type 24. Based on the phylogeny of the mtDNA types (Types 1–24) constructed by estimating sequence divergences of mtDNA, mtDNA types clustered into two groups: Group A (Types 1–3, Type 11, Types 14–19 and Types 22–23) and Group B (Types 4–10, Types 12–13,Types 20–21 and Type 24). These results suggest that mostS. schenckii isolates in China belong to Group B.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
