IntroductionBasal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy in the US. Body mass index (BMI) and height have been associated with a variety of cancer types, yet the evidence regarding BCC is limited. Therefore, we evaluated BMI and height in relation to early-onset BCC (under age 40) and explored the potential role of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure and estrogen-related exposures in the BMI-BCC relationship.MethodsBCC cases (n = 377) were identified through a central dermatopathology facility in Connecticut. Control subjects (n = 389) with benign skin conditions were randomly sampled from the same database and frequency matched to cases on age (median = 36, interquartile range 33–39), gender, and biopsy site. Participants reported weight (usual adult and at age 18), adult height, sociodemographic, phenotypic, and medical characteristics, and prior UV exposures. We calculated multivariate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using unconditional logistic regression models.ResultsAdult BMI was inversely associated with early-onset BCC (obese vs. normal OR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.26–0.71). A similar inverse association was present for BMI at age 18 (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.34–0.85). Excluding UV exposures from the BMI models and including estrogen-related exposures among women only did not alter the association between BMI and BCC, indicating limited mediation or confounding. We did not observe an association between adult height and BCC (OR per cm = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.98–1.02).ConclusionsWe found a significant inverse association between BMI and early-onset BCC, but no association between height and BCC. This association was not explained by UV exposures or estrogen-related exposures in women.  相似文献

Current research shows strong associations between adult height and several positive outcomes such as higher cognitive skills, better earning capacity, increased chance of marriage and better health. It is therefore relevant to investigate the determinants of adult height. There is mixed evidence on the effects of undernutrition during early life on adult height. Therefore, our study aims at assessing the impact of undernutrition during gestation and at ages younger than 15 on adult height. We used data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam. Exposure to undernutrition was determined by place of residence during the Dutch famine during World War II. Included respondents were born between 15 May 1930 and 1 November 1945 and lived in the northern part of the Netherlands during the famine period (n = 1008). Exposure data was collected using interviews and questionnaires and adult height was measured. Exposed and non-exposed respondents were classified in the age categories pregnancy- age 1 (n = 85), age 1–5 (n = 323), age 6–10 (n = 326) or puberty (age 11–15, n = 274). Linear regression analyses were used to test the associations of adult height with exposure. The robustness of the regression results was tested with sensitivity analyses. In the models adjusted for covariates (i.e., number of siblings, education level of parents, and year of birth) and stratified by gender, adult height was significantly shorter for females exposed at ages younger than 1 (−4.45 cm [−7.44–−1.47]) or at ages younger than 2 (−4.08 cm [−7.20–−0.94]). The results for males were only borderline significant for exposure under age 1 (−3.16 [−6.82–0.49]) and significant for exposure under age 2 (−4.09 cm [−7.20–−0.96]). Exposure to the Dutch famine at other ages was not consistently significantly associated with adult height. In terms of public health relevance, the study’s results further underpin the importance of supporting pregnant women and young parents exposed to undernutrition.  相似文献

Height is a classic polygenic trait with high heritability (h2 = 0.8). Recent genome-wide association studies have revealed many independent loci associated with human height. In addition, although many studies have reported an association between copy number variation (CNV) and complex diseases, few have explored the relationship between CNV and height. Recent studies reported that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are highly correlated with common CNVs, suggesting that it is warranted to survey CNVs to identify additional genetic factors affecting heritable traits such as height. This study tested the hypothesis that there would be CNV regions (CNVRs) associated with height nearby genes from the GWASs known to affect height. We identified regions containing > 1% copy number deletion frequency from 3667 population-based cohort samples using the Illumina HumanOmni1-Quad BeadChip. Among the identified CNVRs, we selected 15 candidate regions that were located within 1 Mb of 283 previously reported genes. To assess the effect of these CNVRs on height, statistical analyses were conducted with samples from a case group of 370 taller (upper 10%) individuals and a control group of 1828 individuals (lower 50%).We found that a newly identified 17.7 kb deletion at chromosomal position 12q24.33, approximately 171.6 kb downstream of GPR133, significantly correlated with height; this finding was validated using quantitative PCR. These results suggest that CNVs are potentially important in determining height and may contribute to height variation in human populations.  相似文献

Analyzing the Indonesian Family Life Survey 2007, this paper estimates the value of relative height (relative to the spouse's height) in the marriage market of a developing country. The results indicate that the value of a 1 cm reduction in the husband's height relative to his wife's height is about 3% of his earnings. 3% of the mean of yearly earnings amounts to Rp. 492,000 or US$54 in 2007. That value is reduced to 1% when earnings-generating attributes are controlled for. This difference of 2% points can be considered the value that women attach to their husbands’ earnings-generating attributes; meanwhile, the remaining 1% suggests that there are still other attributes that women look for in male height.  相似文献

This study evaluates height loss during the day in light of variables assessable through participant self-report. Participants were 19 female and 15 male staff and students who met with us twice with a mean interval between measurement sessions of 6.96 h (SD = 0.86). Hypotheses were evaluated using two-stage least squares regression analysis (SYSTAT 10). Males and females lost similar amounts of height between sessions (male,x¯=6.9mm;female,x¯=7.4mm). Among factors considered to impact overall height loss, sleep duration (Adj. R2 = 0.181, p = 0.022) and height (Adj. R2 = 0.121, p = 0.048) were useful in univariate analyses, though they were not significant in any models that included variables other than sex. Judging from log-transformed BMI variation, heavier males and females lost more height (F(2, 31) = 4.59, Adj. R2 = 0.179, p = 0.018). Among factors anticipated to reduce height loss by acting prior to morning measurements, only time spent walking was significantly associated (β = 2.6 ± 0.8 mm, t = 3.16, p = 0.004) when included as a predictor along with sex (p = 0.17) and log-BMI (p = 0.003). This model explained about 38% of height loss variance. None of the factors considered as potentially acting between measurement sessions showed statistically significant influences when included in the model just described, though predictor coefficients were in the anticipated direction. Results suggest that self-reported activities may be an important supplement to anthropometric studies, both for planning and later evaluation, particularly in large studies.  相似文献

This paper analyses the temperature regime of an existing green roof and a sod roof, compared with a modified bituminous membrane roof and a steel sheet roof. The measurement period was from June 2004 to December 2007 at three different measurement locations. Results are given both seasonally and daily; indexes to characterize the effects of the temperature of planted roofs are also proposed. In summer, temperatures under both the green roof (100 mm) and the sod roof (150 mm) showed a similar temperature run; undesirable higher temperatures on the surfaces did not cause a notable increase in temperature under the substrate layers. The difference between the temperature amplitude under the substrate layers of the planted roofs and the surfaces of the conventional roofs was on average 20 °C. In autumn and spring, the sod roof's soil layer showed higher temperatures and lower amplitude than the green roof's substrate layer, which cooled more. In winter, temperatures under the substrate layers of the planted roofs were higher than the surfaces of the conventional roofs; average amplitude was 1 °C and 7–8 °C, respectively.  相似文献

Anthropometric literature on the American territories of the Hispanic monarchy before their independence is still scarce. We attempt to expand the field with a case study that includes some important novelties.Albeit our main source, the military records of the Censo de Revillagigedo (conducted in the early 1790s), has already been used, the sample size and the geographical scope are unprecedented: 19,390 males of four ethnicities (castizos, españoles, mestizos, and mulatos) aged from 16 to 39 from 24 localities, including towns and villages scattered across central regions of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. We build a database that, complemented with information on resource endowments obtained from other sources, permits to analyze the determinants of height. Our results show the importance of spatial differences as well as the significance of ethnicity, occupation, rurality, age and resource endowments as determinants of height. Unprivileged mulatos are only 0.5 cm shorter than, assumedly privileged, españoles in the “first world” (El Bajío) and 1.3 cm taller in the “second world” (Eastern Central Highlands). In turn, living in the “first world” implies being between nearly 1.5 cm and 5 cm taller than the inhabitants of the “second world”. Our estimates of physical statures are placed within an international comparative context and offer a relatively “optimistic” picture.  相似文献

We examine the relationship between high-school students’ height and their self-reported school satisfaction. This relationship is explored on the basis of a survey conducted in 2008 among some 2200 Catalan (Spanish) students. We find a negative association between height and school satisfaction: an association apparently correlated with the students’ maturity, which in turn influences the degree of their disenchantment with the educational system. A 10 cm increase in height decreased the probability of falling into the “very satisfied” category by 9.8%.  相似文献

Wetland vegetation is a core component of wetland ecosystems. Wetland vegetation structural parameters, such as height and leaf area index (LAI) are important variables required by earth-system and ecosystem models. Therefore, rapid, accurate, objective and quantitative estimations of wetland vegetation structural parameters are essential. The airborne laser scanning (also called LiDAR) is an active remote sensing technology and can provide accurate vertical vegetation structural parameters, but its accuracy is limited by short, dense vegetation canopies that are typical of wetland environments. The objective of this research is to explore the potential of estimating height and LAI for short wetland vegetation using airborne discrete-return LiDAR data. The accuracies of raw laser points and LiDAR-derived digital elevation models (DEM) data were assessed using field GPS measured ground elevations. The results demonstrated very high accuracy of 0.09 m in raw laser points and the root mean squared error (RMSE) of the LiDAR-derived DEM was 0.15 m.Vegetation canopy height was estimated from LiDAR data using a canopy height model (CHM) and regression analysis between field-measured vegetation heights and the standard deviation (σ) of detrended LiDAR heights. The results showed that the actual height of short wetland vegetation could not be accurately estimated using the raster CHM vegetation height. However, a strong relationship was observed between the σ and the field-measured height of short wetland vegetation and the highest correlation occurred (R2 = 0.85, RMSE = 0.14 m) when sample radius was 1.50 m. The accuracy assessment of the best-constructed vegetation height prediction model was conducted using 25 samples that were not used in the regression analysis and the results indicated that the model was reliable and accurate (R2 = 0.84, RMSE = 0.14 m).Wetland vegetation LAI was estimated using laser penetration index (LPI) and LiDAR-predicted vegetation height. The results showed that the vegetation height-based predictive model (R2 = 0.79) was more accurate than the LPI-based model (the highest R2 was 0.70). Moreover, the LAI predictive model based on vegetation height was validated using the leave-one-out cross-validation method and the results showed that the LAI predictive model had a good generalization capability. Overall, the results from this study indicate that LiDAR has a great potential to estimate plant height and LAI for short wetland vegetation.  相似文献

Effects of reactor height/diameter ratios ranged from 24 to 4 corresponding to reactor settling velocities from 12 to 2 m h?1 on aerobic granulation were investigated. It was found that granules appeared after 1-week operation and granule volume percentages exceeded 50% after 2–3 weeks in four reactors. In addition, similar granule fraction of 94–96% was found at steady state in all four reactors. Sludge volume index (SVI), average sludge size, biomass density and granule settling velocity at steady state were around 50 ml g?1, 1800 μm, 53 g l?1 and 40 m h?1, respectively, in four reactors. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) were around 38 mg g?1 VSS and 40 mg O2 g?1 VSS h?1, respectively. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprint of sludge in four reactors showed the same microbial population shift during the start-up period and same microbial community structure during steady-state period. These results recommended strongly that reactor height/diameter ratio or reactor setting velocity in the used range in this study did not affect granule formation, physical characteristics, microbial community structure of granules and stable operation of granular sludge reactor. Reactor height/diameter ratio thus can be very flexible in the practice, which is important for the application of aerobic granule technology.  相似文献

The Muzaffarnagari sheep, a mutton-producing breed of India, is generally known for its fast growth rate and high feed conversion efficiency. The study identified the causes of perinatal and postnatal deaths and factors contributing to the cause of mortalities in lambs. Data were recorded for 4628 lambs born to Muzaffarnagari ewes in single-sire matings from 165 rams, between 1978 and 2002. The least-squares means for overall lamb mortality from birth to 1 year of age in the flock was 12.6% (582/4628), while the overall pre- and post-weaning mortality rate averaged 6.6% and 6.0%, respectively. The mortality rate of the lambs declined as the lambs grew older. The major causes associated with lamb losses were pneumonia (31.4%), digestive disorders (14.6%), starvation (9.6%), endoparasitism (5.0%), septicaemia and toxaemia (10.1%), accidental (2.1%) and undetermined causes (27.2%), respectively. The main causes of early lamb mortality (within 15 days of birth) were pneumonia followed by starvation. The highest lamb mortalities occurred within the first 15 days of life. The year of birth of the lamb significantly affected (P < 0.01) the cumulative lamb mortality rate at all ages. The sire of the lamb also had a significant (P < 0.01) effect on lamb mortality rate at all ages. Lambs reared under an intensive feeding management system had a remarkably (P < 0.01) lower mortality rate than lambs maintained under a semi-intensive management system, at 3 months of age and later. The lamb losses were significantly (P < 0.01) higher in ram lambs than in females during the post-weaning stages. The linear regressions of lamb birth weight and dam weight at lambing were highly significant (P < 0.01) with lamb mortality rate during pre- and post-weaning stages. Logistic regression analyses revealed lambs maintained under a semi-intensive system, to be at a greater risk of dying from all ailments than lambs maintained under intensive feeding systems. Male lambs had greater risk of death from respiratory, digestive and other causes, compared to their female counterparts. The findings of this study revealed causes of pre-weaning lamb mortalities to be mainly due to a low birth weight and non-parasitic diseases (predominantly pneumonia). These factors must be considered in any lamb production system.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the association between income and physical development in a nationally representative sample of contemporary US schoolchildren followed from kindergarten to eighth grade (average ages of 6–14). A generalized linear mixed modeling framework is used to evaluate height and body mass index (BMI) as both levels and annualized growth in a pooled sample. Contemporary US schoolchildren show income variation in height that is significant but modest at around .1 cm (in kindergarten) to .4 cm (eighth grade) increases per doubling of income. An exception is found for Hispanic children who show faster height velocity associated with higher income through childhood yielding a 1.0 cm increase per doubling of income by the eighth grade. All groups except black males show a negative relationship between income and BMI that becomes stronger with age with an average .8 kg/m2 lower BMI per doubling of income by the eighth grade. These results are robust to the inclusion of baseline anthropometric controls. The analysis suggests that higher-income US schoolchildren enter mid-adolescence as taller but with lower proportional body mass relative to their lower-income counterparts.  相似文献

Background: Studies of family history of cancer and non-malignant diseases in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) show inconsistent findings. Most studies show no increased risk with family history of cancer. Non-malignant diseases such as allergic diseases, autoimmune diseases, birth defects and thyroid diseases have been reported to be associated with ALL. Methods: We conducted a case-control study of family history of cancer and selected non-malignant conditions (allergic diseases, autoimmune diseases, birth defects, and thyroid diseases). ALL cases were obtained from Children's Cancer Group institutions from January 1989 to June 1993. Controls were recruited via random digit dialing. Family history for first degree relatives and grandparents of ALL cases and controls was collected by structured telephone questionnaires. Conditional logistical regression was used to calculate odds ratios adjusting for potential confounders. Results: We found a borderline association of ALL and having a family member with a history of cancer in cases (n = 1842) compared to controls (n = 1986) (OR = 0.98, 95%CI = 0.93, 1.00) and an inverse association for esophageal cancer based on small numbers. Family history of food and drug allergies demonstrated a modestly reduced risk (OR = 0.83, 95%CI = 0.73, 0.95) as did family history of rheumatoid arthritis (OR = 0.79, 95%CI = 0.65, 0.96). There were no associations with family history of any autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, birth defects, thyroid diseases and risk of childhood ALL. Conclusions: These results show no association of overall family history of cancer with childhood ALL, while providing additional evidence for an inverse association with family history of allergic disease. Two potentially new associations of ALL with family history of esophageal cancer and rheumatoid arthritis require confirmation in other studies and validation with medical records.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to manipulate bicycle seat height in order to perturbate muscle length, contraction velocity and excitation of soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles. One group of female riders (n = 13) rode a stationary ergometer at 200 W and a cadence of 80 rpm. Individuals rode at a self-selected seat height, a 10% lowered and 5% raised seat position. It was hypothesized that because the two muscles would operate at decreased contraction velocities at the low seat, the integrated EMG would be less for the lowest seat position. The soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles showed a significant decrease in integrated EMG value with decreased seat height (soleus F2,24 = 5.4, p < 0.01, gastrocnemius F2,24 = 51.6, p < 0.0001). The combined effect of the movement at the ankle and knee joints resulted in increased length of gastrocnemius rather than shortening at the lowered seat-height position as anticipated. This suggested that there was a greater role of knee-joint angle in determining the muscle excitation for medial gastrocnemius. The original hypothesis was accepted, confirming the importance of setting proper seat height.  相似文献

Correlational research suggests that men show greater attraction to feminine female faces when their testosterone (T) levels are high. Men's preferences for feminine faces also seem to vary as a function of relationship context (short versus long-term). However, the relationship between T and preferences for female facial femininity has yet to be tested experimentally. In the current paper, we report the results of two experiments examining the causal role of T in modulating preferences for facial femininity across both short and long-term mating contexts. Results of Experiment 1 (within-subject design, n = 24) showed that participants significantly preferred feminized versus masculinized versions of women's faces. Further, participants showed a stronger preference for feminine faces in the short versus the long-term context after they received T, but not after they received placebo. Post-hoc analyses suggested that this effect was driven by a lower preference for feminine faces in the long-term context when on T relative to placebo, and this effect was found exclusively for men who received placebo on the first day of testing, and T on the second day of testing (i.e., Order x Drug x Mating context interaction). In Experiment 2 (between-subject design, n = 93), men demonstrated a significant preference for feminized female faces in the short versus the long-term context after T, but not after placebo administration. Collectively, these findings provide the first causal evidence that T modulates men's preferences for facial femininity as a function of mating context.  相似文献

Background: Ecological studies showing an inverse association between pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality and levels of ultraviolet radiation (UVR), suggest that higher levels of sun exposure may reduce risks of pancreatic cancer but there has been only one individual-level study that examined this issue. We aimed to examine the association between pancreatic cancer and markers of exposure to solar UVR, namely skin type, treatment of skin lesions, ambient UVR and time outdoors on work days. Methods: We used data from an Australian case-control study. Location at birth, residential location during adulthood, outdoors work, history of skin lesion treatment and sensitivity of the skin to the sun were obtained by questionnaire. We limited the analyses to Caucasians who answered the questionnaire about UVR (controls = 589/711 recruited; cases = 496/705 recruited). We used NASA's Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer to estimate ambient UVR. Results: Being born in or living in areas of higher ambient UVR (compared to lower ambient UVR) was associated with about 30–40% lower risk of pancreatic cancer. People with fair skin colour had 47% lower risk of pancreatic cancer than those with dark skin colour (95% CI 0.37–0.75). There was some suggestion of increased risk with increased average number of hours spent outside at work. Conclusions: This study suggests that people with light skin colour or those born or living in areas of high ambient UVR have lower risk of pancreatic cancer. Our analysis supports an association between UVR and pancreatic cancer, possibly mediated through production of vitamin D.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to explore the main correlates of male height in 105 countries in Europe & overseas, Asia, North Africa and Oceania. Actual data on male height are compared with the average consumption of 28 protein sources (FAOSTAT, 1993–2009) and seven socioeconomic indicators (according to the World Bank, the CIA World Factbook and the United Nations). This comparison identified three fundamental types of diets based on rice, wheat and milk, respectively. The consumption of rice dominates in tropical Asia, where it is accompanied by very low total protein and energy intake, and one of the shortest statures in the world (∼162–168 cm). Wheat prevails in Muslim countries in North Africa and the Near East, which is where we also observe the highest plant protein consumption in the world and moderately tall statures that do not exceed 174 cm. In taller nations, the intake of protein and energy no longer fundamentally rises, but the consumption of plant proteins markedly decreases at the expense of animal proteins, especially those from dairy. Their highest consumption rates can be found in Northern and Central Europe, with the global peak of male height in the Netherlands (184 cm). In general, when only the complete data from 72 countries were considered, the consumption of protein from the five most correlated foods (r = 0.85) and the human development index (r = 0.84) are most strongly associated with tall statures. A notable finding is the low consumption of the most correlated proteins in Muslim oil superpowers and highly developed countries of East Asia, which could explain their lagging behind Europe in terms of physical stature.  相似文献

BackgroundInfertility is a public health disorder affecting 10% of the population worldwide. Research on the impact of body mass index (BMI) on male fertility is very limited as compared to the multiple studies evaluating the impact of overweight in women's fertility. Although 25%-30% of the cases of couples consulting for infertility are attributable to male factors, studies evaluating the association between semen parameters and BMI are controversial.ObjectiveTo assess the impact of BMI on semen parameters in a selected group of men with unexplained infertility.MethodA retrospective analysis of 168 patients during the 2008-2010 period. They all had at least one semen analysis and related studies to rule out known causes of infertility. Median age of patients was 35 years (22-55), and they were divided into three groups: normal weight (BMI: 20-24.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2), and obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2).ResultsThere were no significant differences in semen parameters evaluated between the three groups, and no significant correlation was found between the same parameters and BMI.ConclusionsThere was no significant association between BMI and conventional semen parameters, but we cannot exclude an impairment in other semen parameters that are not routinely assessed, which could result in a lower potential fertility in these individuals.  相似文献

Type IV pili are long filamentous structures on the surface of bacteria, which can be rapidly assembled or disassembled with pilin subunits by molecular motors. They can generate force during retraction and are involved in many bacterial functions. Steered molecular dynamics simulations with coarse-grained MARTINI models are carried out to investigate the mechanical behaviors of pili under tension. Our study is the first to report a Young's modulus of 0.80 ± 0.07 GPa and a spring constant of 1294.6 ± 116.5 kJ mol−1 nm−2 for pilus. Our results show the mechanical responses of pili are different from those described by the worm-like chain model and the van der Waal's interactions play a critical role in the mechanical responses. Moreover, the effects of pulling rates and virtual spring constants of pilus on Young's modulus are studied and two distinct morphological stages with the conformational changes appear during the extension of pilus are observed. This work provide insight into the mechanics and the deformation mechanism of pilus assembly.  相似文献

Oral cancers are the 11th most common malignancy reported worldwide, accounting for 3% of all newly diagnosed cancer cases, and one with high mortality ratios among all malignancies. The objectives of this study were therefore to study the electrical properties of cancerous tongue tissue and normal tongue tissue, as well as to investigate a new approach for low-cost, noninvasive, and real-time screening of oral cancer. Twelve tongue cancer patients and twelve healthy subjects participated in this study. A disposable probe with four silver electrodes was used to measure the electrical properties of patient's and healthy subject's tongue tissues at six different frequencies, which were 20 Hz, 50 kHz, 1.3 MHz, 2.5 MHz, 3.7 MHz and 5 MHz. The amplitude of the applied voltage was limited to 200 mV. Four measurement parameters of impedance, phase angle, real part of impedance, and imaginary part of impedance of tongue were assessed to see if significant difference in values obtained in patient's and healthy subject's tongue tissues existed. Intraclass correlation coefficient showed that all measurements had good reliability and validity (ICC > 0.95 for all measurements). Significant differences were found at 20 Hz (p < 0.05–0.001 for the four measurement parameters) and 50 kHz (p < 0.001 for the four measurement parameters) between patient's and healthy subject's tongue tissues. In conclusion, bioimpedance at a particular frequency is a potentially promising technique for tongue cancer screening.  相似文献
