Spatial distribution, population density, and reproductive success of many wildlife species may be altered by changes in vegetation composition, habitat structure, and availability of food. Altered distributions of key herbivores such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) may impact all of these factors. Our objective was to determine the direct and indirect effects of supplemental feeding of deer on rodent populations in south Texas. We modeled effects of supplemental feeding and habitat change due to deer browsing through surveys of rodents. Rodents have a short generation time and populations respond quickly to change, so they are a suitable indicator of changes in habitat structure brought about by deer browsing pressure. We sampled rodent populations near to and far from deer feeders within twelve 81-ha enclosures containing three different densities of deer with and without supplemental feed. The three deer densities were low (8.1 ha/deer), medium (3.2 ha/deer), and high (2 ha/deer). We conducted rodent trapping during March and April of 2007 and 2008. Abundance of rodents was much higher (P < 0.001) in 2008 than in the previous year due to an increase in rainfall. However, we found little effect of deer density, supplemental feeding of deer, or distance from deer feeders on rodent populations. Thus we conclude that supplemental feeding of deer and deer density had little influence on rodent communities in this environment. Rodent species native to semi-arid environments are probably adapted to large changes in vegetative productivity brought about by the highly variable annual rainfall patterns, therefore they can adapt to the less abrupt habitat changes resulting from changing densities of deer. Conservation concerns that providing supplemental feed to deer in semi-arid rangeland will disrupt the ecology of the land through changes in rodent populations were not supported. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

We examined the Zanzibar red colobus' (Procolobus kirkii) social structure and population dynamics in relation to the density, diversity and dispersion of food resources in ground-water forest and agricultural land, which we characterized in terms of red colobus food species density, diversity, basal area and dispersion. We used transect sampling and group follows to describe population dynamics and social systems. Two agricultural areas, SJF Shamba and Pete Village, had higher densities and more uniformly dispersed red colobus food tree species than those of the ground-water forest. Red colobus at these two sites had greater population densities and natality, and smaller home ranges than red colobus in the ground-water forest. However, these findings apply to a very small area of agricultural land (approximately 18 ha) that is contiguous with an area of the forest reserve having a high density of red colobus. It is not representative of agricultural areas elsewhere on Zanzibar which support much lower densities or no red colobus. Although agricultural areas contiguous with the forest reserve had high densities of red colobus, they appear to be very unstable. Within the agricultural areas, we observed higher intergroup variation in group size and composition, study groups that decreased dramatically in size and disappeared from the study site, significantly lower levels of juvenile recruitment, and red colobus food trees that exhibited definite signs of overbrowsing. This apparent instability in the subpopulation of red colobus utilizing agricultural systems probably reflects the lower basal area of food trees and the greater fragmentation of suitable habitat and floristic dynamics due to human activities in these areas. A fusion-fission social system occurred only in the ground-water forest subpopulation, which we hypothesize to be due to highly clumped food resources.  相似文献

Summary We use field and laboratory experiments to determine whether Hyphydrus ovatus, a predatory aquatic beetle, is food limited, and whether any food shortage results from depletion of prey by these predators (intrinsic food shortage) or is independent of predation by these beetles (extrinsic food shortage). In the laboratory, differences in feeding rate influence body fat content, thus making fat content a useful index of recent feeding history. H. ovatus collected during the breeding season have fat contents significantly greater than those of H. ovatus starved for 25 days, but not significantly different from those of H. ovatus fed ad libitum for 25 days, indicating that natural feeding rates are near the maximum possible. H. ovatus confined at a density 60 times greater than natural show reduced fat content and feeding rate relative to natural, indicating that at very high densities H. ovatus is capable of depleting its prey. Addition of supplemental natural prey (primarily Cladocera) to experimental enclosures resulted in an order of magnitude increase in prey availability, and a significant increase in fat content and feeding rate of confined H. ovatus. Adults of this species do not appear to be food limited during the breeding season, and extraordinarily high densities of adults seem to be necessary to produce intrinsic food shortage. These results suggest that feeding links between H. ovatus an its principal prey do not have major effects on population dynamics under typical field conditions, and call into question the assumption that closely coupled predator-prey interactions are the sole explanation for observed food-web patterns.  相似文献

Accurate knowledge of the functional response of predators to prey density is essential for understanding food web dynamics, to parameterize mechanistic models of animal responses to environmental change, and for designing appropriate conservation measures. Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), a flagship species of Mediterranean wetlands, primarily feed on Artemias (Artemia spp.) in commercial salt pans, an industry which may collapse for economic reasons. Flamingos also feed on alternative prey such as Chironomid larvae (e.g., Chironomid spp.) and rice seeds (Oryza sativa). However, the profitability of these food items for flamingos remains unknown. We determined the functional responses of flamingos feeding on Artemias, Chironomids, or rice. Experiments were conducted on 11 captive flamingos. For each food item, we offered different ranges of food densities, up to 13 times natural abundance. Video footage allowed estimating intake rates. Contrary to theoretical predictions for filter feeders, intake rates did not increase linearly with increasing food density (type I). Intake rates rather increased asymptotically with increasing food density (type II) or followed a sigmoid shape (type III). Hence, flamingos were not able to ingest food in direct proportion to their abundance, possibly because of unique bill structure resulting in limited filtering capabilities. Overall, flamingos foraged more efficiently on Artemias. When feeding on Chironomids, birds had lower instantaneous rates of food discovery and required more time to extract food from the sediment and ingest it, than when filtering Artemias from the water column. However, feeding on rice was energetically more profitable for flamingos than feeding on Artemias or Chironomids, explaining their attraction for rice fields. Crucially, we found that food densities required for flamingos to reach asymptotic intake rates are rarely met under natural conditions. This allows us to predict an immediate negative effect of any decrease in prey density upon flamingo foraging performance.  相似文献

Summary A 12-week experimental study on the responses of home range size and population density of eastern chipmunks, Tamias striatus, to perturbations in food resources was conducted at the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology in Pennsylvania. The study involved a total of 97 animals and 1,036 captures. Home ranges were determined for all animals marked and captured four or more times. Mean home ranges were calculated for three different experimental periods; a before-seeding period, a seeding period, during which an essentially unlimited supply of a preferred food (sunflower seeds) was available, and a post-seeding period when all seeds were withdrawn. Home ranges during the seeding period contracted in response to the food source supplied in seed trays distributed throughout the plot. The differences between the before and during mean home ranges was significant (P<0.05). Home ranges subsequently expanded after removal of the seeds. The population density also increased over 50% during the seeding period, both in response to the abundant food source and the contraction of resident home ranges. The density subsequently declined to its initial level in the post-seeding period. The replacement of home ranges of chipmunks which died during the study by the establishment of new, similar home ranges by immigrants, and the expansion of existing home ranges by residents into the vacated areas was also observed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the biological aspects and food preferences of Helicoverpa armigera fed different sunflower genotypes and an artificial diet. Tests were performed under multiple-choice and no-choice conditions to evaluate the biological characteristics of H. armigera. In addition, the biological data obtained were used to determine parameters of fertility life tables. The results showed that H. armigera does not have a feeding preference among the sunflower genotypes tested. The larval period on sunflower ranged from 15.0 to 16.2 days. The maximum fecundity on sunflower was 542.6 eggs/female and that on the artificial diet was 794.5 eggs/female. In general, insects feeding on Helio 250 consumed greater quantities of leaves, had higher survival until the end of the pupal stage, displayed high population growth rates, and had low population doubling times, suggesting that in the field populations will achieve greater population densities when fed on Helio 250. Insects that fed on CF101 consumed smaller leaf areas, had lower survival until the end of the pupal stage, lower fertility rates, and lower population growth rates, and may also have displayed lower population densities and smaller reductions in field productivity. This insect developed best on an artificial diet in comparison to sunflower genotypes studied.  相似文献

Purposeful provisioning of food to wild animals is a widespread and growing activity that has the potential to impact populations and communities. Nevertheless, studies assessing use of recreational feeders by free‐living birds during winter are surprisingly rare and largely limited to regions with continental climates characterized by freezing temperatures and snow cover. In contrast, there is little information available regarding bird use of feeders within warmer climates during winter, despite widespread recreational feeding in these areas. In this study, we quantified visitation patterns to bird feeders in a Mediterranean climate to evaluate the relationship between feeder use and several environmental variables known to influence supplemental feeder use in continental climates. We established a network of bird feeders in Corvallis, Oregon, USA, that were filled with black oil sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seeds and equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID) data loggers that recorded >315,000 visits by 70 individual Black‐capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) across a 5‐month period (October 2016–March 2017). We found extensive variation in feeder use, with individuals averaging 1–406 feeder visits/day and using 1–9 of the 21 feeders that were available; individual variability was largely consistent during the course of our study. At the population level, we found that feeder use decreased from the start of our study, and this decline continued through the period when foraging was most limited by daylight, including the winter solstice. In contrast to theoretical predictions and empirical work in continental climates, we found that weather variables did not drive feeder use and that feeder visits peaked at mid‐day and gradually decreased until sunset. Our study indicates that individual‐level differences combined with seasonality to drive feeder use patterns, and we conclude that use of supplemental feeders during winter in Mediterranean climates appears to differ notably from feeder use in continental climates.  相似文献

Population dynamics in the South American muroid rodent Calomys venustus are described from a 14‐year continuous data series, using the auto‐regressive integrated moving average (arima ) model. Population responses to experimental food addition were analysed in two experimental areas, over two periods, using intervention analysis. There was no consistent evidence that food quantity leads to peaks in population density. Significant increases were related to densities of transients and juvenile individuals.  相似文献

Summary If food is in short supply, then provision of addition food should increase the density of Douglas squirrels. A squirrel population was supplied with extra food during the summers of 1977 and 1978 and winter of 1978–1979 in coastal coniferous forest at Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Food produced a 5-to 10-fold increase in squirrel density compared with control populations. Control densities generally varied from 3 to 10 squirrels per trapping area with the experimental population increasing to 65 animals during the winter feeding. This irruption was produced by immigration, more reproduction in females, and increased survival. After the food was withdrawn, the population declined to a level comparable with the controls. We conclude that Douglas squirrel populations fluctuate in accordance with the abundance of food. Territorial behavior may space individuals within populations of Tamiasciurus douglasii but to density levels determined by the available food supply.  相似文献

研究了军曹鱼(Rachycentron canadum)仔、稚鱼的日摄食节律和摄食强度,以及饵料密度、温度、盐度对其摄食的影响。结果表明,发育8d仔鱼(摄食轮虫)、23d稚鱼(摄食卤虫无节幼体)和38d稚鱼(摄食鳗鱼粉状饵料)均表现为明显的昼夜摄食节律,摄食主要在白天进行,白天摄食强度占日摄食强度的68%以上;在白天的摄食中,又以早晨6:00-8:00和傍晚16:00-18:00摄食强度最大:夜间摄食较少或基本不摄食,所以军曹鱼早期幼体的摄食习性属白天摄食且偏于晨昏性类型。在不同饵料密度梯度的试验中,发育8d-11d仔鱼和23d-26d稚鱼摄食的适宜饵料密度范围分别为15ind·mL-1-20ind·mL-1和7ind·mL-1-2ind·mL-1。温度和盐度对发育21d-24d稚鱼日摄食强度的影响均表现为抛物线型的变化曲线,摄食的适宜水温范围为27-31℃,适宜盐度范围为28‰-32‰。结果还表明,幼休摄食强度与饵料密度、水温、盐度的关系均适合于用二次多项式来定量描述。  相似文献

Supplementary feeding experiments were used to directly test the hypotheses that populations of two species of Australian desert rodents ( Pseudomys hermannsburgensis and Notomys alexis ) are food limited. Addition of sunflower seeds to a series of trap plots resulted in an increase in the captures of P. hermannsburgensis . Captures of P. hermannsburgensis were related directly to the amount of supplementary food provided and the amount of food consumed. Supplementary feeding was not, however, able to reverse a population decline, yet it did slow the overall rate of the decline in P. hermannsburgensis . Notomys alexis showed an increase in mean body mass in response to supplementary feeding, but population numbers did not change. Neither species showed a long-term response to the dispersion of supplementary food (clumped vs spread). The combination of pattern analyses and experimental manipulations suggests that the population of P. hermannsburgensis is limited by the availability of food, whereas the population of N. alexis is not. This contrasts with natural patterns of increase, which suggest similar mechanisms are involved in both species, highlighting the need for experimental evidence to support correlative studies.  相似文献

Varied Tits Parus varius lived in flocks containing a pair, or a pair with one or two unpaired birds. To test whether the sociality of Varied Tits or their participation in mixed-species flocks is sensitive to additional food (sunflower seeds), we compared the following parameters between fed and unfed periods at the individual level: population size, degree of site fidelity, mono-specific flock size and the stability of its membership, home-range size and distribution, attendance rate with mixed-species flocks, and flock size. Neither the size of the mono-specific flock nor its membership was affected by food supply. Whether food was added or not, individuals exhibited a strong site fidelity resulting in stable population size. Supplemental feeding had no effect on home-range size or distribution. In the presence of extra food, Varied Tits were observed in mono-specific flocks but rarely in mixed-species flocks. However, when we stopped feeding, they shifted to mixed-species flocking. After adding food, mixed-species flocks were significantly smaller than in the control samples. Varied Tits were more likely to join mixed-species flocks as temperatures dropped and wind speed increased. These results suggest that intra-specific sociality of Varied Tits is relatively insensitive to food supply, but they easily shift to mixed-species flocking in relation to food and weather conditions. We conclude that Varied Tits participate in mixed-species flocks to obtain short-term benefits e.g. increased foraging efficiency but they also obtain long-term benefits from stability of pair bonds and strong site fidelity, which did not respond to supplemental food.  相似文献

Field sampling of an Iowa population of Lymnaea stagnalis appressa Say indicated an annual generation pattern, with survivorship to maturity of i percent or less. Estimates of adult fecundity ranged from about 300 to 800 eggs.Density and food manipulations were performed to determine whether density dependent limitation of growth rates, maturation, or fecundity occurs in this fresh water pulmonate snail. Addition of a high quality food resource, spinach, accelerated growth rates, but did not drastically accelerate maturity, nor increase fecundity. Density increments lowered growth rates, delayed maturity, and lowered fecundity, and the addition of spinach did not counteract high densities. Adult densities are fairly low in the field population, and adults are randomly dispersed, indicating little density dependent regulation of fecundity in this population. However, the low survivorship to maturity, response in growth rates with food addition, and increasing survivorship with age and size indicate that juvenile mortality may play an important role in structuring life history patterns in this population.  相似文献

Survivorship in animals depends on both foraging activities and avoidance of predation, and thus behavioural decisions often reflect a trade‐off between predation risk and foraging efficiency. In this experimental study, we compared behavioural responses of free‐living adult and juvenile Willow Tits Poecile montanus to a conspecific alarm call in two treatments. The alarm call was played back when a focal bird was either not feeding, or feeding on a sunflower seed on the middle part of a spruce branch. When feeding at the time of the alarm call, juveniles more often stayed motionless or moved shorter distances than adults. Our results suggest that in hierarchical groups, juveniles are forced to take greater risks to maintain access to food or lack experience to optimize between food and safety.  相似文献

The foraging efficiencies of four sympatric southern African seed-eating birds, namely Bronze Mannikin Spermestes cucullatus, Cape Sparrow Passer melanurus, Southern Red Bishop Euplectes orix and Thick-billed Weaver Amblyospiza albifrons, and a domesticated species, the Bengalese Finch Lonchura domestica, were measured and compared using giving-up densities (the amount of food remaining following patch exploitation) in experimental food patches. Foraging efficiency was quantified using giving-up densities by offering individual birds equal foraging opportunities. A low giving-up density displays the ability of a forager to profitably harvest food at low resource densities and to gainfully exploit the foraging opportunities overlooked by a less efficient forager. Ten individuals of each of the five species were allowed to forage on six different seed types. Thick-billed Weavers had significantly lower giving-up densities for all seed types except the smallest, namely red manna. Bronze Mannikins showed the converse trend, foraging most efficiently on the smallest seeds. The results of the present study revealed that Thick-billed Weavers were the most efficient foragers (i.e. had the lowest giving-up densities on seeds in feeding trays).  相似文献

Host density can increase infection rates and reduce host fitness as increasing population density enhances the risk of becoming infected either through increased encounter rate or because host condition may decline. Conceivably, potential hosts could take high host density as a cue to up-regulate their defence systems. However, as host density usually covaries with food availability, it is difficult to examine the importance of host density in isolation. Thus, we performed two full-factorial experiments that varied juvenile densities of Daphnia magna (a freshwater crustacean) and food availability independently. We also included a simulated high-density treatment, where juvenile experimental animals were kept in filtered media that previously maintained Daphnia at high-density. Upon reaching adulthood, we exposed the Daphnia to their sterilizing bacterial parasite, Pasteuria ramosa, and examined how the juvenile treatments influenced the likelihood and severity of infection (Experiment I) and host immune investment (Experiment II). Neither juvenile density nor food treatments affected the likelihood of infection; however, well-fed hosts that were well-fed as juveniles produced more offspring prior to sterilization than their less well-fed counterparts. By contrast, parasite growth was independent of host juvenile resources or host density. Parasite-exposed hosts had a greater number of circulating haemocytes than controls (i.e., there was a cellular immune response), but the magnitude of immune response was not mediated by food availability or host density. These results suggest that density dependent effects on disease arise primarily through correlated changes in food availability: low food could limit parasitism and potentially curtail epidemics by reducing both the host’s and parasite’s reproduction as both depend on the same food.  相似文献

Summary In a North Carolina population of Diamorpha smallii, densities were artificially manipulated by thinning stands to predetermined densities. Individuals in areas of high density produce fewer seeds than individuals at low density in the same habitat. Three components of fecundity, the number of flowers per plant, the number of fruits per plant, and the number of seeds per fruit, were negatively correlated with density. The relationship of components of fecundity to density were used to develop a model of population regulation for this species. These results and predictions from the model are discussed in relation to other density studies.  相似文献

Several studies on birds have proposed that a lack of invertebrate prey in urbanized areas could be the main cause for generally lower levels of breeding success compared to rural habitats. Previous work on house sparrows Passer domesticus found that supplemental feeding in urbanized areas increased breeding success but did not contribute to population growth. Here, we hypothesize that supplementary feeding allows house sparrows to achieve higher breeding success but at the cost of lower nestling quality. As abundant food supplies may permit both high‐ and low‐quality nestlings to survive, we also predict that within‐brood variation in proxies of nestling quality would be larger for supplemental food broods than for unfed broods. As proxies of nestling quality, we considered feather corticosterone (CORTf), body condition (scaled mass index, SMI), and tarsus‐based fluctuating asymmetry (FA). Our hypothesis was only partially supported as we did not find an overall effect of food supplementation on FA or SMI. Rather, food supplementation affected nestling phenotype only early in the breeding season in terms of elevated CORTf levels and a tendency for more variable within‐brood CORTf and FA. Early food supplemented nests therefore seemed to include at least some nestlings that faced increased stressors during development, possibly due to harsher environmental (e.g., related to food and temperature) conditions early in the breeding season that would increase sibling competition, especially in larger broods. The fact that CORTf was positively, rather than inversely, related to nestling SMI further suggests that factors influencing CORTf and SMI are likely operating over different periods or, alternatively, that nestlings in good nutritional condition also invest in high‐quality feathers.  相似文献

The sunflower beetle, Zygogramma exclamationis (F.), is the major defoliating pest of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Planting date was evaluated as a potential management tool in a variety of production regions throughout North Dakota from 1997 to 1999, for its impact on sunflower beetle population density of both adults and larvae, defoliation caused by both feeding stages, seed yield, oil content, and larval parasitism in cultivated sunflower. Results from this 3-yr study revealed that sunflower beetle adult and larval populations decreased as planting date was delayed. Delayed planting also reduced defoliation from adult and larval feeding, which is consistent with the lower numbers of the beetles present in the later seeded plots. Even a planting delay of only 1 wk was sufficient to significantly reduce feeding damage to the sunflower plant. Yield reduction caused by leaf destruction of the sunflower beetle adults and larvae was clearly evident in the first year of the study. The other component of sunflower yield, oil content, did not appear to be influenced by beetle feeding. The tachinid parasitoid, Myiopharus macellus (Rheinhard), appeared to be a significant mortality factor of sunflower beetle larvae at most locations regardless of the dates of planting, and was able to attack and parasitize the beetle at various larval densities. The results of this investigation showed the potential of delayed planting date as an effective integrated pest management tactic to reduce sunflower beetle adults, larvae, and their resulting defoliation. In addition, altering planting dates was compatible with biological control of the beetle, because delaying the planting date did not reduce the effectiveness of the parasitic fly, M. macellus, which attacks the sunflower beetle larvae.  相似文献

Direct or indirect supplemental feeding of free‐ranging animals occurs worldwide, resulting in significant impacts on population density or altered demographic processes. Another potential impact of increased energy intake from supplemental feeding is altered immunocompetence. As immune system maintenance is energetically costly, there may be trade‐offs between immune responses and other energy‐demanding physiological processes in individual animals. Although increased availability of food sources through supplemental feeding is expected to increase the overall immunocompetence of animals, empirical data verifying the association between supplemental feeding and different immune parameters are lacking. Understanding the potential influence of supplemental feeding on immune phenotypes is critical, as it may also impact host–pathogen dynamics in free‐ranging animals. Using urban stray cats as a study model, we tested for associations between the intensity of supplemental feeding due to cat caretaker activity (CCA); body condition; and immune phenotype (bacterial killing assay (BKA), immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration, and leukocyte counts). Significantly higher bacterial killing ability was observed in cats from high CCA districts, whereas higher IgG concentration and eosinophil counts were observed in cats from low CCA districts. Other leukocyte counts and body condition indices showed no significant association with CCA. We observed varying patterns of different immune components in relation to supplemental feeding. Out data suggest that supplemental feeding influences immune phenotype, not only by means of energy provisioning, but also by potentially reducing exposure rates to parasite infections through stray cat behavioral changes.  相似文献
