A salt storage facility has been located adjacent to Fonda Lake since 1953. In February 1981 a core was taken from the profundal sediments of the lake and analyzed to determine the effects of salt perturbation on the diatom community over a 32-year period. Diatom assemblages from different levels were compared using multivariate techniques including cluster analysis and principal component analysis. Shifts in diatom composition related to salinification were revealed most clearly by subdominant taxa. Five distinct groups of diatom taxa were found to correspond with 5 depth intervals. The diatom component of the lake up to 1960 included two groups of taxa which were alkaliphilous and chloride indifferent. A reduction in species diversity beginning in 1960 may indicate a salt effect. By 1968, when diversity reached a minimum, a variety of halophilic taxa (including Diatoma tenue, Navicula gregaria and Synedra fasciculata) attained their highest relative abundances. At the top of the core, diversity increased slightly and some halophilic taxa decreased in relative abundance, which suggests a possible decrease in salt loading to the lake.  相似文献

1. An oligotrophic arctic lake was fertilised with inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus as (NH4)2 NO3 and H3PO4 for five summers. The loading rate was 1.7–2.5 mmol N m–2 day–1 and 0.136–0.20 mmol P m–2 day–1 which is two to three times the annual loading of lakes in the area. The heterotrophic microzooplankton community was enumerated during the experiment as well as 1 year pre- and post-treatment.
2. The structure of the microplankton community changed from a nutrient limited system, dominated by oligotrich protozoans and small-particle feeding rotifers, to a system dominated by a succession of peritrich protozoans and predatory rotifers. These peritrich protozoans and predatory rotifers were not present prior to fertilisation and never constituted more than a small fraction of the biomass in other lakes at the research site. The average biomass of the rotifers and protozoans was more than seven and a half times larger by the end of fertilisation than it was initially.
3. Because of the increases in numbers of individuals in these new taxa, the structure of the microbial food web changed. When fertilisation stopped, most parameters returned to prefertilisation levels within 1 year.  相似文献

1. We used the habitat template approach to test the hypothesis that substratum stability, freezing and nutrient supply were determinants of community structure in 19 headwater streams of arctic Alaska. Streams were selected from five categories: glacier (n = 3), mountain (4), mountain spring (4), tundra spring (4) and tundra (4). 2. Bed movement among streams ranged from 0 to 97% during a ~2‐month summer season. Glacier and mountain streams had significantly higher bed movement than tundra and spring streams (P < 0.001). 3. All glacier and tundra streams froze solid during winter; all mountain spring streams remained unfrozen. Freezing among mountain and tundra spring streams was variable, with a subset of streams flowing throughout winter. 4. With the exception of glacier streams, which showed high concentrations of NH4+ and NO3? (P < 0.001), differences in nutrient concentrations among stream types were not significant. 5. Algal taxon richness was greatest in tundra springs (13 taxa) and lowest in glacier streams (five taxa, P < 0.001), as was algal biovolume (7350 versus 687 mm3 m?2, P < 0.001). Macroinvertebrate taxon richness was lower in glacier streams (4.7 ± 1.7, P < 0.005) than the other stream types (20.5–25.0 taxa), and biomass was greater in mountain springs (4837 mg m?2) and tundra springs (3367 mg m?2, P < 0.001). 6. Multidimensional scaling and multiple regression analyses of macroinvertebrate (biomass) and periphyton (biovolume) indicated that a 2‐dimensional habitat template with bed movement and freezing as axes provides an accurate model of major factors controlling the community structure of headwater streams in arctic Alaska.  相似文献

Anticipated increases in precipitation intensity due to climate change may affect hydrological controls on soil N2O fluxes, resulting in a feedback between climate change and soil greenhouse gas emissions. We evaluated soil hydrologic controls on N2O emissions during experimental water table fluctuations in large, intact soil columns amended with 100 kg ha?1 KNO3‐N. Soil columns were collected from three landscape positions that vary in hydrological and biogeochemical properties (N= 12 columns). We flooded columns from bottom to surface to simulate water table fluctuations that are typical for this site, and expected to increase given future climate change scenarios. After the soil was saturated to the surface, we allowed the columns to drain freely while monitoring volumetric soil water content, matric potential and N2O emissions over 96 h. Across all landscape positions and replicate soil columns, there was a positive linear relationship between total soil N and the log of cumulative N2O emissions (r2= 0.47; P= 0.013). Within individual soil columns, N2O flux was a Gaussian function of water‐filled pore space (WFPS) during drainage (mean r2= 0.90). However, instantaneous maximum N2O flux rates did not occur at a consistent WFPS, ranging from 63% to 98% WFPS across landscape positions and replicate soil columns. In contrast, instantaneous maximum N2O flux rates occurred within a narrow range (?1.88 to ?4.48 kPa) of soil matric potential that approximated field capacity. The relatively consistent relationship between maximum N2O flux rates and matric potential indicates that water filled pore size is an important factor affecting soil N2O fluxes. These data demonstrate that matric potential is the strongest predictor of the timing of N2O fluxes across soils that differ in texture, structure and bulk density.  相似文献

Palaeoecological research has been used to evaluate the impact of acidic deposition on lakes in insular Newfoundland. Terrestrial organic deposits in the region have considerable influence on freshwaters and have placed constrains on interpretation of the degree of anthropogenic acidification. In this paper, a region-specific calibration equation unique to clear water lakes (colour values 15) is developed from diatom assemblages in surface sediments from 22 lakes. The inferred pH history of two acidic, clear water lakes is then developed with a view to eliminating the influence of organic acidity from the interpretation of historical acid-base chemistry. The pH histories of the two lakes suggest modest declines (0.3 to 0.4 unit) in the most recent strata (i.e. since the 1930's). Both lakes demonstrate an increase in inferred pH in the surface horizon, which is consistent with declines in acidic deposition in the region since the mid 1970's. The magnitude and timing of the pH trends in these two lakes is common to those previously developed from more highly coloured lakes. The similar magnitude and onset of pH declines in lakes with varying amounts of organic influence provides no palaeolimnological evidence to suggest a contribution to, or modification of, lake acidification by organic acids.  相似文献

1. A number of long-term studies have shown that spring biological events have advanced in recent decades and that this is a response to climate change. In lentic systems, changes in phytoplankton phenology have been attributed to various directly climate-related processes including changes in the onset and duration of thermal stratification, earlier ice-break up and increased water temperature. Both indirect climatic drivers and non-climate drivers such as elevated grazing pressure and nutrient enrichment can also affect phenology.
2. This study investigated whether phenological trends in phytoplankton could be detected in a relatively short time series in a shallow, ice-free, polymictic lake with a high annual discharge and whether any such trends could be causally explained.
3. It was found that the centre of gravity of the spring chlorophyll a bloom advanced significantly by 1.6 days per year over a 15-year period. This was accompanied by a significant increase in water temperature of 0.12 °C per year which is high compared to published rates of change over longer time series. No direct effects of ice cover, stratification or water discharge rates could be linked to the advancement of the spring bloom. Instead, the shift in timing was attributed to an advance in the timing of the dominant spring diatom, Aulacoseira spp., instigated by a temperature-driven increase in replication rate leading to an earlier onset of silica (SiO2) limitation.  相似文献

Twenty-nine surface sediment samples from Effingham Inlet, a small fjord on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, were analyzed for diatoms. This fjord has been selected for paleoceanographic investigation due to the presence of laminated sediments resulting from the dysoxic to anoxic bottom water conditions in the inner and outer basins of the inlet. Distributional patterns of the diatom microflora reflected proximity to littoral regions, phytoplankton production, and marine influence from outside the fjord. Principal components and cluster analyses of the microflora established four diatom assemblages with a clear separation between the inner and outer basin diatom floras. Inner basin stations were characterized by elevated absolute abundance with assemblages dominated by spring–early summer bloom taxa including Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii, and Thalassiosira pacifica. Chaetoceros spp. resting spores were abundant throughout Effingham Inlet, with the exception of the stations closest to the fjord head. Stations located in the outer basin and towards the fjord mouth had relatively lower absolute abundance yet showed a higher relative and absolute abundance of Thalassionema nitzschioides, Rhizosolenia setigera, Coscinodiscus radiatus, Ditylum brightwellii, Odontella longicruris, and Paralia sulcata in relation to the inner basin. Many of these latter taxa are often associated with late summer and autumn conditions in fjords along coastal British Columbia. Oceanographic data for Effingham Inlet suggest that increased offshore penetration is more likely to occur from summer to early fall, with a more restricted offshore influence in the inner basin. Diatom surface sediment assemblages in Effingham Inlet appear to reflect incursions of offshore waters into the fjord. Absolute abundance estimates and the preservation of lightly silicified taxa suggest excellent preservation of fossil material in the sediments of the predominantly anoxic inner basin. Preservation in the outer basin is reduced, reflecting more frequent recharge by oxygenated waters spilling over the outer sill into the basin. Our findings suggest the inner basin should be an optimal site for reconstruction of diatom production, with records from the outer basin providing more consistent information about offshore influence and coastal upwelling conditions over the Holocene. Estimates of diatom abundance within the inner basin sediment may serve as a good proxy of production, although proxy tracers of bottom water conditions and sedimentological analyses must be coupled to the diatom record to ensure depositional conditions were not influencing valve preservation or abundance. Our results suggest that fjords can serve as good environments for paleoceanographic reconstructions of both inshore and offshore conditions although careful site selection and understanding of processes affecting the microfossil record are essential.  相似文献

Preliminary investigations of the diatom genus Asterionella ralfsii W. Smith from Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia indicate that its morphology differs from other reported forms. Mean cell length increased between the spring and the fall. Bimodal distribution of length classes occurred in several lakes and was not related to measured environmental variables. The need for further work on this species in this and other geographical areas is considered.  相似文献

A study was made to determine whether a new reservoir being constructed on Huntington Creek, Utah would have significant effects on the attached diatom communities of the stream. Cluster analysis and other statistical methods indicated only small differences in the diatom communities before and after construction of the dam.  相似文献

The effect of a thermal effluent on the attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977. Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed. Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora. The thermal effluent significantly affected the algal flora in a section of river 100 to 135 meters long immediately below the discharge point. Cladophora growth was increased and Hydrurus was absent in this area. In addition, diatom production was often higher and diversity lower than in the rest of the river. Community structure was unique from all other adjacent areas. Small temperature increases which occured as effluent and river waters mixed farther downstream were apparently not as important to the algal flora as other environmental factors.  相似文献

Between 1991 and 1993, samples were collected upstream and downstream of the industrial basin and urban centre of Liège. Rotifers and crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) were identified and counted. Their population dynamics were related to physical and chemical factors (temperature, oxygen, ammonium, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates) and to phytoplankton biomass. The zooplankton was dominated by rotifers; crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) were less abundant. There was a succession of groups and species, some thriving in the spring and others in summer or autumn. The dominant rotifer species were Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas, Brachionus angularis Gosse, Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) and Synchaeta spp.; B. calyciflorus and B. angularis are spring species. K. cochlearis was present between May and November. Crustacean biomass was important in summer and autumn, but the faunal spectrum and biomass also varied with sampling location. Low spring and summer discharges allowed the phytoplankton to develop significantly. The zooplankton development followed a similar pattern. During low flow, when plankton populations become established, some declines in phytoplankton could only be explained by sedimentation and grazing pressure by zooplankton. Although these factors provided a good explanation of the longitudinal variation, some local conditions (e.g. oxygen deficit, high level of phosphate) also induced changes (e.g. industrial and municipal waste water discharge).  相似文献

The organic carbon cycle of a shallow, tundra lake (mean depth 1.45 m) was followed for 5 weeks of the open water period by examining CO2 fluxes through benthic respiration and anaerobic decomposition, photosynthesis of benthic and phytoplankton communities and gas exchange at the air-water interface. Total photosynthesis (as consumption of carbon dioxide) was 37.5 mmole C m–2 d–1, 83% of which was benthic and macrophytic. By direct measurement benthic respiration exceeded benthic photosynthesis by 6.6 mmole C m–2 d–1. The lake lost 1.4 × 106 moles C in two weeks after ice melted by degassing C02, and 6.8 mmole C m–2 d–1 (1.5 × 106 moles) during the remainder of the open water period; 2.2 mmole C m2 d–1 of this was release Of CO2 stored in the sediments by cryoconcentration the previous winter. Anaerobic microbial decomposition was only 4% of the benthic aerobic respiration rate of 38 mmole C m–2 d–1. An annual budget estimate for the lake indicated that 50% of the carbon was produced by the benthic community, 20% by phytoplankton, and 30% was allochthonous material. The relative contribution of allochthonous input was in accordance with measurement of the 15N of sedimented organic matter.  相似文献

1. In cultural landscapes, lake response to climate can be masked by land‐use change and nutrient loss from their catchments. Palaeolimnological methods were used to reconstruct the ecological response of diatoms in a eutrophic lowland lake (White Lough, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland) to altered nutrient P loading and precipitation variability over c. 100 years. 2. 210Pb‐dated sediment cores were analysed to determine diatom assemblage variability, biogenic silica concentration, geochemical phosphorus concentration and accumulation rate. Manure P and agricultural N surplus data were collated from documentary sources. Long‐term trends in annual temperature and precipitation were derived from the Armagh Observatory. 3. Diatom community turnover from 1890 until c. 1960 was limited, and assemblages were dominated by Aulacoseira subarctica; after this date, changes primarily reflected a eutrophication sequence owing to increased diffuse nutrient inputs associated with intensification of land use (external P loading increased by a factor of three). 4. Diatom and biogenic Si profiles were compared with North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) records, an index of regional weather patterns. Biogenic Si exhibited a c. 7‐year cycle, which tracked a cycle of similar timescale in the Armagh climate record for dry summers. In turn, this cycle was related to the variation in the NAO. 5. Monitoring data from 1971 to 2007 of nitrate exports from the Blackwater River showed that these too followed a roughly 7‐year cycle at least up to 2000, in which dry summers were followed by sharp increases in nitrate export. It is argued that diatom production in White Lough reflects the cyclic behaviour in nitrate loading and the constraints that nitrogen availability places on the spring diatom bloom in a lake that is dominated by cyanobacteria.  相似文献

Seasonal successional trajectories of transplanted and experimental diatom communities were studied during the summer of 1973. Manipulation of these diatom assemblages was accomplished through the development of an in situ experimental apparatus capable of incubating these organisms without doing violence to the community itself. In one set of experiments the effects of water quality were tested on the development of inocula from grossly similar but fairly distant locations. In another set the native inoculum was incubated in the continual presence of Fe, Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn and crude oil. Seasonal succession took place in all of the control and experimental communities. During the course of succession the trajectories of assemblages under some conditions converged while others diverged. Since the random fluctuations in the environment were constant for all assemblages, the abundances of individual species were due to niche packing and interspecific restraints on the biotic potential of selected diatom species as well as the changes in water quality. The most diverse community was an experimentally mixed one. The high diversity of this community was probably due to niche packing a phenomenon which restricted the realized niches of many species and hindered their blooming. Paradoxically twice as many species (40%) had their greatest niche breadth in the mixed community as did species in the transplanted (20%) or native controls (17%). Enrichment of the incubation medium with heavy metals and oil altered the community structure and diversity of most experimental vessels. Growth of some species was depressed while that of others was enhanced. The trajectories of the communities enriched with oil and Pb were quite similar throughout the summer. The Cu and Cr assemblages initially followed the trajectory of oil and Pb but later diverged. Greatest species diversity was consistantly found in the community incubated in the presence of Cu. The Fe enriched community generally diverged from all the others. Recurrent group analysis identified distinctive groups of species for each of the experimental assemblages as well as controls. The response of these diatom communities incubated under natural conditions were characteristic of resilient communities in which populations with different structures were quickly established.Supported by ERDA Contract E (11-1) 3254, Reference Number (COO) 3254-28. Diatom communities were analyzed in 39 streams located in drainages with varied land-use practices throughout Victoria, Australia. Thirteen water quality parameters were also measured in each stream. Most streams had low HCO3 1- concentrations (low buffering capacity) with >90% of the waters dominated by Na1+ and Cl1-. Phosphate concentrations ranged from 0.003 to 2.0 mg/L. Diatom communities (245 taxa) were strongly correlated with land-use practices, i.e. historic clear cutting, and secondary salinization. Streams influenced by heavy irrigation practices and dryland farming had reduced species diversity and richness compared to systems with low to moderate land use. A nonmetric multidimensional ordination of diatom communities in the 39 streams was conducted. An ANOSIM on the ordination showed that diatom communities in upland watersheds with native forest canopies and low salinization, lowland streams in watersheds with cleared forest canopies, moderate agricultural utilization and salinization, and lowland streams in areas with high irrigation and salinization were all significantly different (p<0.001) from one another. Community ordination techniques showed that both specific conductance (salinity) and phosphorus interacted to determine stream diatom community structure in drainages with high secondary salinization. Drainages with low to moderate agricultural activity and low nutrients, but with a wide range of salinities showed strong associations with the diatom taxa Amphora coffeaeformis, Cymbella pusilla and Entomoneis paludosa, whereas, streams in regions with heavy agricultural practices and high phosphorus had Bacillaria paradoxa, Nitzschia hungarica, N. frustulum and Aulacoseira granulata as numerically important diatoms. In contrast, Rhizosolenia eriensis, Frustulia rhomboides, Eunotia pectinatus and Tabellaria flocculosa were strongly associated with upland streams with fast current, relatively low O-PO4 3- concentrations, low pH, low salinity, and low temperature. In general, the diatom communities in saline streams (3 mS) were similar to those previously reported in saline lakes in Victoria.  相似文献

Epilithic diatoms of mountain rivers from the upper Segre catchment (Oriental Pyrenees) were studied in 1998, during three different seasons: March, July and September. Four rivers, the river Segre and its three most important tributaries, Duran, Molina and Querol, were sampled in upstream and downstream stretches. The diatom communities were comparable in all upstream stretches of these mountain rivers draining siliceous substrates. Dominant taxa were Achnanthidium subatomus, Diatoma mesodon, Encyonema cf. minutum, E. silesiacum, Fragilaria arcus, F. capucina, Gomphonema calcifugum, G. pumilum, Meridion circulare and Nitzschia pura. Changes in water quality in the downstream stretches lead to the appearance of pollution tolerant taxa, such as Eolimna minima, Gomphoneis minuta, Navicula gregaria, and Nitzschia inconspicua. As a result, the values obtained with the diatom water quality indices (IPS Specific Polluosensitivity Index, CEE and IBD Biological Diatom Index) decreased. The diatom community composition and the derived water quality values did not change in the upstream stretches over the year. In contrast, significant changes were observed in the downstream stretches with best water␣quality in July, during high flows due to melting snow, and worst values in September, during low␣discharge. The diatom indices, especially the IPS, showed a good performance in these mountain rivers.  相似文献

1. The development of periphytic algae and bacteria is controlled by a combination of interacting biotic processes and abiotic factors. Distinguishing between the selection pressure resulting from pollution and that of natural environmental factors is therefore one of the most critical aspects of assessing the impact of pollutants on the diversity and function of benthic microbial communities in natural ecosystems. 2. We studied how current velocity and season affect the ability of river biofilms to cope with complex chemical pollution. We compared the diversity, structure and production of periphytic algae and bacteria from four sampling zones with differing chemical water quality levels and different flow velocities over the course of two seasons (summer and winter). 3. The three factors tested all influenced biofilm development, but this depended on the biological variable being measured. Bacterial and algal densities were highly dependent on season and chemical water quality. Algal density was lower in summer than in winter, but bacterial density and production increased from upstream (reference) to downstream (polluted), and this increase was more marked in winter. The impact of chemical water quality was also dependent on the season. 4. An interaction between current velocity and pollution was also detected. During the summer, there was no difference in bacterial density or production between the upstream and downstream segments in the fast current zones, whereas both variables were higher downstream in the slow current zones. Such interactions between environmental factors and the impact of water quality on biofilms must be taken into account in assessments of the effects of chemicals on biofilm community structure and functioning in rivers.  相似文献

Fossil diatom assemblages preserved within the sedimentary record in Arctic lakes provide the potential to reconstruct past changes in important limnological variables. During the summers of 1992 and 1993, we examined previously unstudied freshwater ecosystems on Cornwallis Island, Arctic Canada, with the specific objectives of (1) documenting the limnology and modern diatom assemblages from this region, and (2) determining which environmental variables most influence diatom species distributions. The Cornwallis Island study sites displayed the least amount of variance in measured water chemistry variables in comparison to nearly all of our labs’ previous freshwater surveys in the Arctic. The small limnological gradients precluded the development of a statistically robust diatom inference model, but perhaps more importantly, allowed us to explore variations in diatom composition in the absence of marked variations in water chemistry. Diatom species turnover was minimal, with the most common diatom taxa being Achnanthidium minutissima, Nitzschia perminuta, N. frustulum, with lesser percent abundances of Chaemaepinnularia soehrensis, Navicula chiarae, Psammothidium marginulata, and A. kryophila. A small number of study sites differed from the majority with respect to water chemistry (e.g., coastal sites with high specific conductivities) and habitat availability (e.g., ephemeral ponds with extensive moss habitats), and these sites had markedly different diatom assemblages. These data reinforce previous observations that water chemistry and other climate-related factors are the primary environmental controls influencing diatom distributions at high latitudes. Diatoms in Lake Baikal exhibit significant spatial variation, related to prevailing climate, lake morphology and fluvial input into the lake. Here we have assessed the threats to endemic planktonic diatom species (through the development of empirical models), which form a major component of primary production within the lake. Multivariate techniques employed include redundancy analysis (RDA) and Huisman–Olff–Fresco (HOF) models. Our analyses suggest that eight environmental variables were significant in explaining diatom distribution across the lake, and in order of importance these are snow thickness on the ice, water depth, duration of days with white ice, suspended matter in the lake, days of total ice duration, temperature of the water surface in July, concentration of zooplankton and suspended organic matter. Impacts on dominant phytoplankton diatom species are highlighted using t‐value biplots. Predictions of future climate change on Lake Baikal are likely to result in shorter periods of ice cover, decreased snow cover across the lake in spring, increased fluvial input into the lake, and an increase in the intensification of surface water stratification during summer months. All these factors are likely to impact negatively on the slow‐growing, cold‐water endemics such as Aulacoseira baicalensis and Cyclotella minuta, which currently dominate diatom assemblages. Instead, taxa that are only intermittently abundant, at present, in offshore areas (e.g. Stephanodiscus meyerii) are likely to become more frequent. However, given the climatic gradient across the lake, the timing and extent of changes in community structure are likely to vary. Moreover, palaeolimnological records show that Lake Baikal diatom assemblages have been dynamic throughout the Holocene, with both endemic and cosmopolitan species exhibiting periods of dominance. Effects of climate change on the entire lake ecosystem may yet be profound as the structure of the pelagic food web may change from one based on endemic diatom taxa to one dominated by nondiatom picoplankton, and as limnological functioning (e.g. stratification and mixing) affects deepwater oxygen availability, nutrient cycling and trophic linkages.  相似文献
