Two new species of Erysiphe section Uncinula are described and illustrated based on the molecular and morphological analyses: (1) Erysiphe fernandoae sp. nov. on Fernandoa adenophylla is distinct from other Erysiphe species on the plant family Bignoniaceae by having smaller asci, ca 12 appendages per chasmothecium and being found only in Asia; (2) Erysiphe michikoae sp. nov. on Celtis jessoensis differs from Erysiphe kusanoi on other Celtis species in having smaller chasmothecial, ascal and ascospore dimensions, and fewer number of chasmothecium appendages. The phylogenetic relationships of the two new species with other closely related species are discussed based on 28S and ITS rDNA sequences.  相似文献

A new species and a new variety of Erysiphe sect. Uncinula are described and illustrated. Erysiphe havrylenkoana is a new species found on Nothofagus alpina and N. obliqua in Argentina, and E. prunastri var. japonica is a new variety collected on Prunus maximowiczii in Japan. Erysiphe havrylenkoana differs from E. nothofagi, E. patagoniaca and E. magellanica in having unique helicoid appendages, brownish from the base to the beginning of helicoid part, spirally twisted at the center and straight or not spiral at the upper part with uncinate to circinate tip. The phylogenetic analyses of rDNA sequences clearly showed that the spiral pattern of helicoid appendages is an important morphological character to delimit species among Nothofagus powdery mildews. Erysiphe prunastri var. japonica is distinct from E. prunastri var. prunastri parasitizing hitherto Prunus species from East-Central Asia to Europe by having mainly eight asci per chasmothecium and smooth, rarely septate appendages.  相似文献

A powdery mildew fungus occurring on leaves of Corylopsis pauciflora and C. spicata in Japan is described as a new species, Erysiphe corylopsidis. This species is characterized by fewer than 15 appendages on a chasmothecium, primary branches of the appendages occasionally elongated, and a relatively small number (2–5) of ascospores per ascus. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on rDNA ITS and 28S rDNA sequences indicate that this fungus forms an independent lineage in the genus Erysiphe.  相似文献

Two new species, Erysiphe azerbaijanica on Castanea sativa and E. linderae on Lindera praecox, both belonging to the Microsphaera lineage of the genus Erysiphe are described based on morphological and molecular data. Erysiphe azerbaijanica is distinguished from other Erysiphe species occurring on Castanea spp. by its cylindrical conidia with a length/width ratio of 2–3.6, longer conidiophore, and foot-cells. Molecular analyses indicated that this species forms a clade of its own, supporting the morphological observations. Molecular phylogenetic analyses showed that E. blasti s. lat. is divided into two genetically differentiated groups associated with different host species. Based on the sequence differences in the 28S rRNA gene and ITS region, connected with differences in the number and length of appendages, the fungus on L. praecox is described as a new species, E. linderae.  相似文献

Pseudoidium javanicum is proposed as a new species based on analyses of 28S, ITS and IGS rDNA sequences, and morphological data. This new species was found on Acalypha wilkesiana var. marginata, A. argentea, and A. cristata collected from Cibodas Botanical Garden, Bogor (West Java Province, Indonesia). Our analyses showed that all these specimens have identical rDNA sequences and similar morphological characteristics. They form a distinct clade separated from other species of Erysiphaceae. Pseudoidium javanicum differs from Erysiphe acalyphae by having shorter conidiophores and foot cells 1–3 times as long as the 0–2 following cells. The conidial size of Ps. javanicum is also smaller than that of E. jatrophae.  相似文献

The following two new species of powdery mildew fungi were found onStephania cephalantha (Menispermaceae) andViburnum opulus var.calvescens (Caprifoliaceae) in Japan:
  1. Erysiphe stephaniae onS. cephalantha has smaller cleistothecia and more asci present in the cleistothecium, which include remarkably larger ascospores, thanErysiphe pisi, which has been previously described on the same host plant from Taiwan.
  2. Microsphaera shinanoensis onV. opulus var.calvescens is easily distinguishable fromMicrosphaera alni, hitherto known on this plant, and otherMicrosphaera fungi onViburnum plants by the shape of its appendages and the numbers of its asci and ascospores.

Recent molecular studies have shown that four genetic lineages, probably cryptic species, cause oak powdery mildew in Europe. We tested the hypothesis of niche differentiation between the two most frequent species (Erysiphe alphitoides and Erysiphe quercicola), by determining their relative prevalences at various times during the growing season. E. quercicola was strictly associated with the flag-shoot symptom in a 2-yr sampling campaign of 35 natural oak seedling populations. Additional sampling during Aug.–Sep. in the same stands showed that E. alphitoides predominated in most (70 %) cases. Time-course monitoring of powdery mildew in two natural regenerating oak populations confirmed the inverse patterns of relative abundance for these two species in early and late season. The coexistence of these two closely related species may be due to the use of different strategies, resulting from a trade-off between overwintering (flag-shoots vs. chasmothecia) and late-season performance.  相似文献

Morphological observations using light and scanning electron microscopes and molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that the fungus growing on the surface of fruits or sepals of Styrax japonica collected at Nagano, Japan, is a new powdery mildew with an unusual morphology, described here as Erysiphe monascogera. This fungus has mainly a single ascus in a chasmothecium, but molecular phylogenetic analysis and the shape of the hyphal appressoria suggest that it is an Erysiphe species. Erysiphe monascogera is a sister-species to E. nomurae on Symplocos chinensis var. leucocarpa f. pilosa, although there are obvious morphological differences between the two species. This inconsistency between molecular phylogeny and morphology may be explained by the unique habitat of E. monascogera. Erysiphe monascogera and E. nomurae are included in a clade composed of the E. alphitoides complex, which suggests that these two species diverged by host jumping of the E. alphitoides complex, having oaks as major host plants.  相似文献

Ascomata of a powdery mildew-like fungus have been found on Carpinus laxiflora in Tochigi Prefecture of Japan since 2003. The morphological and molecular characteristics of this fungus are reported, and a new species, Erysiphe fimbriata, is proposed. It has large chasmothecia (200–250 μm in diameter) with long (up to 4–5 mm in length), fimbriate appendages arising from the upper half of the chasmothecia and turning upward, and numerous asci (22–38 per chasmothecium). Erysiphe fimbriata is a unique fungus both genetically and morphologically.  相似文献

Erysiphe gracilis is a powdery mildew species that occurs on evergreen oak species belonging to Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis in East Asia (China and Japan). In a previous report, we found that E. gracilis var. gracilis is divided into four genotypes each of them forming a separate clade with strong bootstrap support. In this study, we further investigated genotype speciation in E. gracilis var. longissima occurring on Q. acuta and Q. sessilifolia, and found that this variety is also divided into two distinct genotypes. These results suggested that E. gracilis represents a species complex consisting of six different species. Based on detailed morphological examinations correlating with results of molecular sequence analyses, we propose to divide E. gracilis into six species, encompassing three new species (E. uncinuloides, E. pseudogracilis, and E. longiappendiculata), one new name (E. longifilamentosa), and two known species (E. gracilis s. str. and E. hiratae). Because of the strong morphological similarity of the powdery mildew fungi that infect papaveraceous hosts, a total of 39 samples were studied to reveal the phylogeny and host range of these fungi. ITS and 28S sequence analyses revealed that the isolates identified earlier as Erysiphe cruciferarum on papaveraceous hosts represent distinct lineages and differ from that of E. cruciferarum sensu stricto on brassicaceous hosts. The taxonomic status of the anamorph infecting Eschscholzia californica was revised, and therefore, a new species name, Erysiphe eschscholziae, is proposed. The taxonomic position of the Pseudoidium anamorphs infecting Glaucium flavum, Meconopsis cambrica, Papaver dubium, and Stylophorum diphyllum remain unclear. This study revealed that Erysiphe macleayae exhibits a specific host range different from that of E. cruciferarum, the common pathogen of papaveraceous hosts. Although E. macleayae occurred naturally on Macleaya cordata, Macleaya microcarpa, M. cambrica, and Chelidonium majus only, our inoculation tests revealed that the fungus was capable of infecting Argemone grandiflora, Glaucium corniculatum, Papaver rhoeas, and Papaver somniferum, indicating that these plant species may also be taken into account as potential hosts. Erysiphe cruciferarum originating from P. somniferum was not able to infect A. grandiflora, C. majus, E. californica, M. cordata, and P. rhoeas. The emergence of E. macleayae on M. microcarpa is reported here for the first time from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The appearance of chasmothecia of E. macleayae on C. majus in Slovakia was reported, as well. Erysiphe cruciferarum was identified on G. corniculatum and reported here for the first time from Slovakia.  相似文献

Cloned hybridization probes have been used to investigate the effect of infection of susceptible Hordeum vulgare cv Prior by Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei on the abundance of host mRNAs coding for the large (LSU) and precursor to the small (SSU) subunits of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and the rapidly metabolized 32kD thylakoid protein (32kDP). In leaf RNA preparations from control (noninoculated) plants the amount of mRNA for the LSU and SSU declined from 7 to 11 days after sowing, whereas that for the 32kDP increased over this period. Following inoculation at 6 days after sowing, the abundance of each of the mRNA species was significantly reduced below that of controls at 1, 3, and 5 days later. Results indicate that infection causes a rapid and extensive reduction in host mRNA species coding for proteins with important photosynthetic functions.  相似文献

The investigation of Calea urticifolia afforded eight new germacranolides. While five are heliangolides, three are of a new type and have some unusual structural features. The structures are elucidated by extensive 1H-NMR studies and some chemical transformations. In addition, a new isoeugenol and an unusual phloroglucinol derivative were isolated; the structure of the latter could only be established after some chemical transformations. Other Calea species contain typical C17 acetylenes only, also present in other species of the subtribe Galinsoginae. So far, the results on Calea indicate that the genus is chemically heterogenous.  相似文献

 A new species of Erysiphe sect. Uncinula is described and illustrated from Japan. Erysiphe wadae sp. nov., found on Japanese beech (Fagus crenata, Fagaceae), is characterized by having two types of appendages, i.e., a long (true) appendage arising from the equatorial zone of the ascomata, and a short appendage arising from the upper part of the ascomata. This characteristic is shared by E. simulans, E. australiana, E. flexuosa, E. liquidambaris, E. prunastri, and E. togashiana. Erysiphe wadae differs from the latter five species in its brown-colored appendage. Erysiphe simulans is most similar to E. wadae, but differs in its loosely uncinate appendage and smaller number of ascospores. Identity of the nucleotide sequences of the rDNA ITS region is 92.3% between the two species. The significance of the two types of appendage in taxonomy and phylogeny of powdery mildews is discussed based on molecular phylogenetic analysis. We studied morphometrical variation, species boundaries, and importance of morphometric features for a reliable separation of five African Semispathidium taxa. Altogether, 20 features traditionally used in alpha-taxonomy of the predatory genus Semispathidium were measured or scored on 85 protargol-impregnated interphase specimens, and were analyzed using hierarchical clustering as well as principal component and canonical discriminant analyses. This multivariate approach confirmed that a population found in Botswanan floodplain soil represents a distinct taxon. The new species is described here as S. longiarmatum, using live observation, protargol impregnation, and scanning electron microscopy. Semispathidium longiarmatum strongly resembles S. armatum and S. breviarmatum but it is clearly distinguished from these species by the extrusome pattern. The reliability of S. longiarmatum is also strengthened, according to the canonical discriminant analysis, by several quantitative features, viz., the number of ciliary rows, the length:width ratio of the macronucleus, and the number of dikinetids in brush row 1. Moreover, the present study documents the distinctness of all African Semispathidium species which can be separated by a combination of both qualitative and quantitative (morphometric) features. Consequently, Semispathidium species do not form a continuous complex but fairly discrete clusters in the phenotypic space.  相似文献

During the DNA sequence analyses of specimens on Quercus subgenus Cyclobalanopsis deposited as Erysiphe gracilis or Cystotheca wrightii, some specimens exhibited DNA sequences that are different from the sequences of the two species. Based on BLAST search and morphological observations, the true causal agent was identified as E. quercicola. This is the first record of E. quercicola on species of subgenus Cyclobalanopsis. Previous studies revealed that E. quercicola is plurivorous infecting a wide range of tropical fruit trees and woody plants. Further studies are needed to address the question as to why only E. quercicola infect species of subgenus Cyclobalanopsis.  相似文献

Host cell wall hydroxyproline enhancement was observed in the successful development of the parasite Erysiphe graminis DC. f. sp. tritici em Marchal (MS-1) on wheat (em Thell). Hydroxyproline enhancement, which was observed only in susceptible hosts, was detected as early as 25 hours after infection. This observation suggests that the increase in cell wall hydroxyproline is a primary event in the host-pathogen interaction of Erysiphe graminis in wheat.  相似文献

A new species, Piceoxylon burejense sp. nov. (Pinaceae), is described from the Middle Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) of the Zeya-Bureya Basin, Amur Region (Russian Far East) based on the fossil wood anatomy. The new species is characterized by a combination of anatomical wood features of the modern genera Picea and Larix. The fossil wood of Pinaceae was found in the Cretaceous deposits of the Amur Region for the first time.  相似文献
