The shell exchange behaviour of the hermit crab Clibanarius antillensis was examined for evidence that the non-initiating crab used information about the initiator's shell. Manipulation of the internal volume of the initiator's shell altered the outcome of exchanges in a manner consistent with the negotiations model of resource exchange. It is suggested that the fundamental frequency of shells is detected by crabs during rapping behaviour when the initiator raps its shell against that of the non-initiator.  相似文献

Intraspecific shell exchange in the hermit crab Clibanarius virescens (Krauss) was studied by field and laboratory experiments. Shell exchange frequencies were determined in potentially competitive (only one individual of a pair would benefit from an exchange) and potentially mutualistic (both members benefit) situations. The frequency of competitive exchanges in laboratory experiments, which paired individuals occupying very poor quality shells and individuals occupying the shells in which they were collected, was very low (2%). Higher exchange frequencies were observed between individuals in poor quality shells and individuals in shells of their preferred size. Shell exchange frequencies were highest in mutualistic situations and situations in which all individuals occupied poor quality shells. Crabs which had been evicted from their shells by the experimenter prior to selecting new shells were evicted from the new shells in subsequent shell fight experiments significantly more often than crabs which had not been evicted. Field experiments resulted in exchange frequencies similar to those observed in the laboratory. The relevance of the present experiments to Maynard Smith and Parker's theory of asymmetric contests is discussed.  相似文献

Specific chemicals in the environment evoke significant changes in the behavior of many aquatic organisms. We studied in the laboratory whether satiated individuals of the hermit crab, Pagurus longicarpus Say 1817, adjust their investigatory behavior towards an empty, optimal gastropod shell according to differences of chemical context. We also explored to what extent shell investigation by a crab in the same hunger state was affected by occupying an inadequately sized shell. Our results confirmed in part previous findings that crabs can discriminate the odor of freshly dead snails from the odor of freshly dead conspecifics. In the presence of the former odor, crabs inhabiting shells of inadequate size were more responsive and active than those in better-fitting shells. To the contrary, regardless of the quality of the inhabited shell, P. longicarpus remained practically motionless when presented with the odor of freshly dead conspecifics, possibly because the risks of incurring in predators would outweigh the benefits of acquiring a new shell. Unexpectedly, we found that crabs in both types of shell quality exhibited nearly the same behavior in control water, while crabs in adequate shells were more responsive in the presence of food odor. Individuals appeared insensitive to the odor of live snails; indeed, only one hermit crab species has been seen removing living snails from their shells. An intriguing result was that water conditioned by the odors of live conspecifics exerted a strong effect on all the individuals by inducing an intense shell investigation. Our study underlines the central role exerted by chemical detection in hermit crabs' behavior and demonstrates the existence of a complex interplay among chemical context, the physiological state of the animal, and the ecological pressures of the habitat.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative growth and sexual dimorphism in the hermit crab Clibanarius signatus. The evaluation was done with 955 specimens (494 males, 251 females, and 210 intersexes) captured in Persian Gulf (Iran) during January to December 2015. Animals were submitted to measurements related to weight (BW, total wet weight) and body size related to cephalic shield (SW, width; and SL, length) and propodus of both chelipeds (CPL, length; and CPW, width). Males were larger and heavier than females and intersexes. Both males and females showed a negative allometric growth for the SL–BW and SL–SW relationships, but a positive allometric growth to intersex specimens. To SL–CPL relationship, a negative allometric growth was confirmed in males and females independent of the laterality of the CPL, whereas a contrast was verified in intersexes, with a positive allometric growth occurred for both hands. To SL–CPW relationship, a negative allometric growth (b < 1) occurred in females, independent of the laterality of the CPW, while in males, a positive allometric pattern was confirmed. In intersexes, this relationship was positive except for the right CPW which was isometric. Sexual dimorphism was evident in Clibanarius signatus, with males being the largest and females the smallest specimens in the population.  相似文献

Although mating has been described in several hermit crab species, the mechanics of spermatophore transfer have not previously been demonstrated. Evidence from pleopod and gonopore morphology, video observations, and inseminated females indicates that in Clibanarius vittatus the male applies a spermatophoric mass directly onto the female via the gonopores rather than with modified pleopods 1-2 (gonopods) and/or genital papillae as in many other decapods. The single second pleopod of males of C. vittatus has a simple endopod with no apparent modifications for sperm transfer. There are no genital papillae extending from the male gonopores. The globular spermatophores are aligned in rows surrounded by a seminal secretion in the male ducts (vasa deferentia that terminate in ejaculatory ducts opening to the exterior via the gonopores). During copulation, described from time-lapse video recordings, the ventral surface of the last thoracic segment of the male, bearing the gonopores, was apposed to the ventral cephalothorax of the female. A massive amount of seminal secretion containing spermatophore ribbons, termed here the spermatophoric mass and described for the first time in a hermit crab species, was observed covering the sternites and coxae of pereopods 1-5 of a recently copulated female. It is suggested that during copulation the male emits the contents of the ejaculatory ducts directly onto the female without the aid of gonopods or genital papillae. Although spermatophore transfer is simple in C. vittatus, the presence of modified anterior pleopods or elongate genital papillae (sexual tubes) in other paguroidean species suggests the possibility of a more complex insemination process in these other hermit crabs.  相似文献

Resources may confer advantages by enhancing their owners’ fighting ability (resource holding potential; RHP). While the resource-correlated RHP hypothesis has been recognized as a determinant of agonistic success in different taxa, this has mostly been based on assessment of either the intruder or the owner, but only rarely in both contestants. We tested whether the internal structure of shells affects hermit crabs’ RHP, both as owners defending the shell against eviction and as intruders attempting to gain access to an occupied shell. We conducted contests (n?=?60) to compare the success in shell eviction by intruders in intact shells vs. in shells with the columella artificially reduced, and the success of shell retention by owners in intact shells vs. shells with the columella reduced. The internal configuration of the shell showed different resource-correlated RHP effects depending on the individual’s role in the fight. The presence of a columella in the intruder’s shell did not affect the likelihood that they would evict their opponents. However, owners resisted more evictions in shells with intact columella than those in shells with reduced columella. Our results demonstrate that the same resource can offer different RHP advantages to owners and intruders during an agonistic interaction.

The process of how the hermit crab,Pagurus geminus, acquires a new shell was investigated in the natural habitat at Ezura in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, during the non-breeding season, and the following results were obtained. Hermit crabs acquired new shells most frequently by shell exchange between 2 individuals and occasionally by attacking snails. Acquisition through location of empty shells was not found. At the snail attacking site or the site of shell exchange attempts, sometimes many other individuals appeared and, frequently, confusing or complex shell changes were observed. The importance of introduction of fresh shells to a hermit crab population and the possibility for a certain individual to acquire a shell introduced by others through shell exchange attempts are discussed.  相似文献

Shifts from ornamental fish tanks to functional reef ecosystem aquaria has led to unprecedented pressure on marine invertebrate fisheries. The Caribbean blue-legged hermit crab (Clibanarius tricolor) is among the species targeted for functional reef tanks, valued for its role as an aquarium cleaner. Little is known about the biology of the species or the genetic landscape in which the increased collecting is happening. Here, we investigate the phylogeographic history and genetic diversity of C. tricolor through analysis of mitochondrial (CO1, 16S) and nuclear (H3) DNA. We test whether phylogeographic breaks for other invertebrates structure the genetic diversity of C. tricolor and explore additional factors that may govern structure, such as reproductive strategy, life history, habitat preference, adult mobility, demographic history, and vicariance events. Based on these three markers, we find high genetic diversity and connectivity and find no evidence to support the tested barriers as relevant to gene flow for C. tricolor. Rather, mitochondrial and nuclear markers infer high genetic diversity, panmixia, and demographic expansion during the Pleistocene. Our finding of panmixia makes it difficult to identify source or sink populations, but the absence of hierarchical structure inferred from mtDNA and nuDNA markers we use, high levels of genetic diversity and homogeneity for these same markers, and advantageous life history traits suggest C. tricolor is not currently at special risk; however, geographically restricted haplotypes and limitations within our study prevent us from making a strong conclusion about the sustainability of the fishery. Our work on the Caribbean blue-legged hermit crab highlights the importance of acquiring basic information on exploited species and reiterates that common regional forces may not equally impact connectivity among co-distributed species.

Shell of the adult hermit crab has some important roles for its fitness. In the same time, the shell size often limits the body growth of its owner. To grow the body size larger, the individual must change the shell to another larger shell. If the individual cannot get another larger one, the individual has to suppress the body size growth as the occupied shell size allows. Growth suppression would result in the lower fitness. With a simple mathematical model, we consider the criterion about whether the individual should try to change the shell or not in order to get the higher fitness. We show that the optimality of a shell change behavior has a relation with the body size and the season length for the shell change. They also affect the optimal timing for the shell change. It is implied that the probability of the success in a shell change and the cost for the shell change behavior do not affect the optimal timing for the shell change at all but significantly do the optimality of the behavioral choice.  相似文献

The intertidal hermit crab Clibanarius erythropus was collected at three sites on São Miguel (Azores) during low spring tides. Shells occupied were identified and measured. Crab sizes ranged from 1.78 to 13.67 mm (cephalothoracic shield length), with an average size of 4.40 ± 1.44 mm. Of the 19 different shells utilised, the most frequent were Littorina striata (23.8%), Nassarius incrassatus (22.5%) and Mitra sp. (22.0%). At Fenais da Luz, L. striata was most frequently occupied, while at Água de Alto it was N. incrassatus and, at Caloura, Mitra sp. shells were most frequently used. Shell selection appears to be determined by respective sizes of hermit crab and shell species. Small size-class crabs occupy more shell species than larger crabs. The smallest crab was found at Fenais da Luz occupying a small Bittium sp., whereas the largest crab was found at Caloura inhabiting Stramonita haemastoma.  相似文献

Prey exposed to predators with different hunting and feeding modes are under different selective pressures, therefore it is expected that they should exhibit plastic and adaptive antipredator responses according to current risks. The hermit crab Calcinus californiensis faces two contrasting predators, the shell peeler Arenaeus mexicanus that hunts by active searching and the shell breaker Eriphia squamata that hunts by ambush. In order to discover whether C. californiensis displays plastic responses depending on the type of predatory challenge, we examined the shell size preference, the hiding time, and the escape velocity of hermit crabs in the presence of chemical cues from a shell peeler, a shell breaker, and a control. We also examined the role of shell fit on the escape velocity of the hermit crabs in natural tidal pools. Crabs chose shells with a loose fit (relatively large shells) in the presence of chemical cues from the shell peeler Arenaeus and shells with a tight fit when exposed to cues from the shell breaker Eriphia. The hermit crabs hid for shorter times and moved away faster from Eriphia than from Arenaeus stimulus. The use of a tight shell favours faster movement away from the shell breaker (pre‐capture strategy), but prevents the crab retracting deeper inside the shell, increasing the risk of be eaten by the shell peeler once captured. Hence, the use of loose shells that protect the crab from the shell peeler hinders fast escape. This study shows specific and plastic antipredatory responses to contrasting predators, each bringing adaptive benefits at different levels of the predator sequence.  相似文献

Shell exchanges between hermit crabs may occur after a period of shell rapping, when the initiating or attacking crab brings its shell rapidly and repeatedly into contact with the shell of the non-initiator or defender, in a series of bouts. There are two opposing models of hermit crab shell exchange and the function of shell rapping. The negotiation model views shell exchange as a mutualistic activity, in which the initiator supplies information about the quality of its shell via the fundamental frequency of the rapping sound. The aggression model views shell rapping as either detrimental to the defending crab, or as providing it with information about the initiator''s ability or motivation to continue, or both. The negotiation model makes no predictions about the temporal pattern of rapping, but under the aggression model it would be expected that crabs that rapped more vigorously would be more likely to effect an exchange. Repeating the signal could be expected under either model. Crabs that achieve an exchange rap more vigorously, rapping is more persistent when a clear gain in shell quality may be achieved, and the vigour is greater when the relative resource-holding potential (or ''fighting ability'') is high. These findings support the aggression model rather than the negotiation model. Contrary to the predictions of game theory, crabs that do not effect an exchange appear to signal that they are about to give up. The data suggest that rapping is performed repeatedly because the accumulation of all of the performances acts as a signal of stamina.  相似文献

Growth rates of the hermit crabs Pagurus longicarpus Say and P. pollicaris Say maintained in preferred shells and in shells smaller than the preferred size have been compared. Changes in wet weight, shield length, and duration of the molt cycle were determined. Crabs in preferred shells grew significantly faster than those in small shells. P. pollicaris molted at approximately the same rate in both cases but grew more each molt in preferred shells. Von Bertalanffy growth curves were fitted to changes in shield length among crabs in preferred shells. These curves indicate that P. longicarpus may mature four months after settling from the plankton and reach its asymptotic size within the next eight months while P. pollicaris also matures four months after leaving the plankton but does not reach its asymptotic size for approximately three years. The rapid growth of P. longicarpus may enable it to preempt shells which are required for the successful brooding of a large clutch before these shells are required by more aggressive competitors, such as P. pollicaris and Clibanarius vittatus.  相似文献

Factors which influence decisions by hermit crabs concerning whether to approach, investigate and enter another shell have been investigated by systematically varying the size of the shell in possession and the size of the shell being offered. The probability that a crab will approach or enter the shell depends on both variables. Investigation after contact, however, depends only on the size of the shell in possession. Durations of each stage of the sequence are negatively correlated with the numbers of crabs in each experimental group performing the next stage. For the final sequence of aperture investigatory activities, the fewer crabs entering the offered shell, the greater the number of investigatory acts performed by those crabs. In addition to variation in number of acts and duration of investigation, specific use of appendages varies according to the experimental situation. Thus naked crabs use the minor cheliped to investigate shells in preference to the major cheliped, which is normally used by housed crabs, with the major cheliped being reserved for defence by naked crabs. These data are discussed in terms of information collection and decisions made on the basis of that information.  相似文献

Summary Two populations (salt marsh and seagrass bed) of the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus were sampled to examine associations between shell characteristics and egg production. Multivariate statistical analyses controlled for crab size and time of year, variables that otherwise could be confounded with shell effects. Although correlations between shell characteristics and reproduction existed in both populations, generalizations could not be made because associations varied within and between populations. Shell species was not associated with a female's reproductive state (i.e., whether or not she was barren when sampled) in either population. In the seagrass population, medium-large and large females occupying severely damaged or fouled shells were half as likely to be reproductive as females occupying other shell conditions. However, there was no association between shell condition and reproductive state for small and small-medium females in the seagrass population or among all females in the salt marsh population. In the seagrass population, small through medium-large reproductive females occupied shells more similar to their predicted shell size, regardless of whether the occupied shell was relatively small or large, than nonreproductive females. In contrast, relative shell sizes of reproductive and nonreproductive females were similar for large females in the seagrass population and all females in the salt marsh population. Clutch sizes were enhanced for females occupying Polinices duplicatus shells or shells larger than their predicted shell size in the seagrass population. Relative shell size also was associated with clutch size in the salt marsh population, but crabs occupying shells similar to their predicted shell size had the largest clutches.  相似文献

Histochemical studies on maturing ovaries of C. clibanarius reveal that the yolk is deposited in 3 different forms: yolk spheres containing lipoproteins, smaller globules of a glycolipoproteinaceous nature, and granules containing only neutral and phospholipids. The temporal sequence observed in the deposition of various deutoplasmic bodies, the occurrence of carotenoids linked to yolk, and the chemical nature of the follicle cells suggest an autoheterosynthesis of yolk in this species.  相似文献

To better comprehend the role of gill ion regulatory mechanisms, the modulation by Na(+), K(+), NH(4)(+) and ATP of (Na(+), K(+))-ATPase activity was examined in a posterior gill microsomal fraction from the hermit crab, Clibanarius vittatus. Under saturating Mg(2+), Na(+) and K(+) concentrations, two well-defined ATP hydrolyzing sites were revealed. ATP was hydrolyzed at the high-affinity sites at a maximum rate of V=19.1+/-0.8 U mg(-1) and K(0.5)=63.8+/-2.9 nmol L(-1), obeying cooperative kinetics (n(H)=1.9); at the low-affinity sites, hydrolysis obeyed Michaelis-Menten kinetics with K(M)=44.1+/-2.6 mumol L(-1) and V=123.5+/-6.1 U mg(-1). Stimulation by Na(+) (V=149.0+/-7.4 U mg(-1); K(M)=7.4+/-0.4 mmol L(-1)), Mg(2+) (V=132.0+/-5.3 U mg(-1); K(0.5)=0.36+/-0.02 mmol L(-1)), NH(4)(+) (V=245.6+/-9.8 U mg(-1); K(M)=4.5+/-0.2 mmol L(-1)) and K(+) (V=140.0+/-4.9 U mg(-1); K(M)=1.5+/-0.1 mmol L(-1)) followed a single saturation curve and, except for Mg(2+), obeyed Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Under optimal ionic conditions, but in the absence of NH(4)(+), ouabain (K(I)=117.3+/-3.5 mumol L(-1)) and orthovanadate inhibited up to 67% of the ATPase activity. The inhibition studies performed suggest the presence of F(0)F(1), V- and P-ATPases, but not Na(+)-, K(+)- or Ca(2+)-ATPases as contaminants in the gill microsomal preparation. (Na(+), K(+))-ATPase activity was synergistically modulated by NH(4)(+) and K(+). At 20 mmol L(-1) K(+), a maximum rate of V=290.8+/-14.5 U mg(-1) was seen as NH(4)(+) concentration was increased up to 50 mmol L(-1). However, at fixed NH(4)(+) concentrations, no additional stimulation was found for increasing K(+) concentrations (V=135.2+/-4.1 U mg(-1) and V=236.6+/-9.5 U mg(-1) and for 10 and 30 mmol L(-1) NH(4)(+), respectively). This is the first report to detail ionic modulation of gill (Na(+), K(+))-ATPase in C. vittatus, revealing an asymmetrical, synergistic stimulation of the enzyme by K(+) and NH(4)(+), as yet undescribed for other (Na(+), K(+))-ATPases, and should provide a better understanding of NH(4)(+) excretion in pagurid crabs.  相似文献

The shell utilization patterns of two intertidal populations of the hermit crab, Pagurus longicarpus Say, were studied. The populations differed with respect to the physical characteristics of their habitats and the availability of empty gastropod shells. The first population was in an estuary connected to Narragansett Bay. This population had few, if any. empty shells available in the area. The second population was in a rock-cobble area directly on Block Island Sound. There were large numbers of empty gastropod shells available for this population. The consistently high gastropod mortality on this shore appears to be caused by the animals being washed up on the beach, where they die due to desiccation.Data from samples collected from June to November of both 1974 and 1975 showed that there were distinct differences in the shell utilization patterns of the two populations. A greater proportion of the animals collected from the estuary population inhabited damaged shells and/or shells with symbionts compared to the individuals from the population with large numbers of empty shells available.The results of shell selection experiments indicated that individuals from both populations inhabited less than preferred shells. The population with large numbers of empty shells available was qualitatively shell-limited because of the effect of physical factors on the morphology of the gastropod species of that area. In addition, the shell selection experiments showed that individuals from the two areas had significantly different shell preferences. This result may be explained by the effects of the environment on the growth rates of the hermit crabs and/or as an indication that shell preferences may vary in response to the physical factors of a given habitat.  相似文献
