A growing body of evidence suggests that resources invested in reproduction often come at the expense of the ability to mount an immune response. During mating, female sagebrush crickets, Cyphoderris strepitans, consume the ends of the male’s hind wings and ingest his haemolymph. Previous research has shown that this behaviour impairs the ability of males to secure additional matings. One hypothesis to account for this effect is that wing wounding triggers an energetically costly immune response, such that nonvirgin males are unable to sustain the costly acoustical signalling needed to attract additional females. To test this hypothesis, we injected virgin males with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) to provoke an immune response, and monitored their mating success in the field. LPS‐injected virgin males took significantly longer to mate than sham‐injected virgin males, and spent significantly less time calling. We also compared virgin, nonvirgin and experimentally wing‐wounded virgin males with respect to: (1) their ability to encapsulate a foreign invader via the accumulation of haemocytes and deposition of melanin and (2) baseline levels of phenoloxidase (PO), a key enzyme in the biochemical cascade leading to the production of melanin. Although encapsulation ability did not differ with reproductive experience, virgin males had significantly higher levels of PO than either nonvirgin or experimentally wing‐wounded virgin males. These results suggest that wing‐wounding alone is sufficient to impair male immunity, and that males trade‐off investment in reproduction and immunity. 相似文献

Abstract. The effect of temperature on male sexual displays is well documented but its role in mediating the differential mating success of males is less well established. Male sagebrush crickets Cyphoderris strepitans Morris and Gwynne occur in high‐elevation sagebrush meadows in mountainous areas of the western U.S.A., and often are observed singing at temperatures as low ?8 to ?4 °C to attract sexually receptive females. Males exhibit differential mating success based on their previous mating experience: virgin males have a higher probability of obtaining a mating than do non‐virgin males of securing an additional mating. This differential mating success is mediated in part by an unusual form of nuptial feeding behaviour. Females feed on males’ hind wings at mating and the costs imposed on males as a consequence of this behaviour constrain male mating success. In the present study, to determine whether sagebrush crickets are capable of some degree of thermoregulation, and also to investigate whether this ability is influenced by male mating experience, thoracic temperatures of males of varying mating status were measured in relation to ambient temperature throughout the breeding season. A full factorial model examining the effect of site of capture, mating status, body mass and ambient temperature reveals that only ambient temperature has a significant effect on thoracic temperature after controlling for all other factors. It is concluded that differences in the calling times of virgin and non‐virgin males and their ability to secure mates does not result from differences in their ability to cope physiologically with low temperatures. 相似文献

engage in an unusual form of sexual cannibalism during copulation:females
feed on males' fleshy hind wings and ingest hemolymphoozing from the wounds
they inflict. These wounds are not fatal,and normally only a portion of the
hind wings are eaten at anyone mating, so that mated males are not precluded
from matingagain. As a result, nonvirgin males have fewer material resources
tooffer females than do virgin males, such that females shouldbe selected to
preferentially mate with high-investment virginmales. We tested the
hypothesis that female mating preferencesfavor males capable of supplying
females with the highest materialinvestment. Our results indicate that both
female diet and opportunitiesfor sexual cannibalism influence female mating
behavior. Femalesmaintained on a low-nutrient diet mounted males
significantlysooner than females maintained on a high-nutrient diet,
indicatingthat a female's overall nutrient intake may determine her
propensityto mate. In addition, females were significantly more reluctantto
mount and mate with males whose hind wings had been surgicallyremoved and
thus were incapable of providing females with awing meal. Finally, females
initially mated to dewinged malesremated with winged males significantly
sooner than femalesallowed to feed freely during their initial mating,

Theory predicts that lifespan will depend on the dietary intake of an individual, the allocation of resources towards reproduction and the costs imposed by the opposite sex. Although females typically bear the majority of the cost of offspring production, nuptial feeding invertebrates provide an ideal opportunity to examine the extent to which reproductive interactions through gift provisioning impose a cost on males. Here we use experimental evolution in an Australian ground cricket to assess how diet influences male lifespan and how the costs of mating evolve for males. Our findings show that males had significantly shorter lifespans in populations that adapted to a low‐quality diet and that this divergence is driven by evolutionary change in how females interact with males over reproduction. This suggests that the extent of sexual conflict over nuptial feeding may be under‐realized by focusing solely on the consequences of reproductive interactions from the female’s perspective. 相似文献

Male decorated crickets, Gryttodes sigllatus, normally lackbind wings and are incapable of flight (short-winged males),but occasionally exhibit fully developed hind wings that makerudimentary flight possible (long-winged males). Long-wingedmales bear a cost of flight in the form of decreased inseminationsuccess, which arises as a consequence of two interrelated factors:(1) long-winged males exhibit a lower reproductive investmentrelative to short-winged males, as measured by the mass of amale's spermatophore and reproductive organs and (2) the postcopulatorybehavior of females favors males that maximize their reproductiveinvestment. Of particular importance to male mating successis the spermatophylax, a large gelatinous mass forming partof the spermatophore and consumed by the female after mating.Consumption of the spermatophylax keeps the female preoccupiedwhile sperm are discharged from the remaining portion of thespermatophore (sperm ampulla) into her repro ductive tract.The spermatophylax of long-winged males is significantly smallerthan that of short-winged males and consequently requires lesstime to consume. As a result, the sperm ampulla of long-wingedmales is frequently removed before its complete evacuation andsignificantly sooner than that of short-winged males. Costs incurred in the manufacture of ejaculates may constrainthe number of sperm that males can produce, so males shouldshow some economy in their allocation of sperm across multiplematings. In species in which females mate with multiple malesand are capable of storing sperm for extended periods, spermallocation of males should be tailored to the risk of spermcompetition. Recent game theory predicts that males shouldtransfer the least sperm when there are no other rivals, andthe most sperm when only one other rival is likely to inseminatethe female. However, as the numbers of competitors increasesbeyond two, the models predict a corresponding decrease in ejaculate
expenditure. We tested these predictions in three cricket species,
Gryllodes sigillatus, Gryllus veletis, and Gryllus texensis,
assessing the sperm allocation of males held under three levelsof apparent interrival competition: no rivals, one rival andsix rivals. Sperm allocation of G. veletis varied accordingto theory: males increased their sperm allocation with an increasedrisk of sperm competition (no rivals vs. one), but decreasedtheir allocation with an increased intensity of sperm competition(one rival vs. six). Sperm allocation of male G. texensis showedno significant response to the density of rivals, and spermallocation in G. sigillatus was influenced by an unexpectedinteraction between treatment density and the order in whichmales experienced the three treatments. The observed interspecificvariation in facultative sperm allocation may be due to interspecificdifferences in population density, rearing environment, orfemale mating behavior. 相似文献

In mating systems that are characterized by resource-dependentmale behavior like nuptial feeding, food limitation obviouslyplays a major role in male performance. In Panorpa vulgaris(Mecoptera: Panorpidae), the ability to produce nuptial giftshas major fitness consequences as the number of gifts determinescopulation duration, which then determines the number of eggsfertilized by a given male. In the present study, we are ableto show that males of P. vulgaris were limited in their productionof salivary secretions. The number of saliva secretions maleswere able to produce declined in successive matings. Moreover,males of nutritionally high status produced more gifts thanthose of nutritionally low status. The proximate factor determiningmale saliva secretion was the development of the salivary gland,which in turn depended on the amount of food a male could access.The degree of male mating effort corresponded to the size ofthe salivary gland, yet while absolute investment increasedwith gland size, the relative investment decreased. In sexually reproducing organisms, male ejaculates are complex traits that are potentially subject to many different selection pressures. Recent experimental evidence supports the hypothesis that postmating sexual selection, and particularly sexual conflict, may play a key role in the evolution of the proteinaceous components of ejaculates. However, this evidence is based almost entirely on the study of Drosophila, a species with a mating system characterized by a high cost of mating for females. In this paper, we broaden our understanding of the role of selection on the evolution of seminal proteins by characterizing these proteins in field crickets, a group of insects in which females appear to benefit from mating multiply. We have used an experimental protocol that can be applied to other organisms for which complete genome sequences are not yet available. By combining an evolutionary expressed sequence tag screen of the male accessory gland in 2 focal species (Gryllus firmus and Gryllus pennsylvanicus) with a bioinformatics approach, we have been able to identify as many as 30 seminal proteins. Evolutionary analyses among 5 species of the genus Gryllus suggest that seminal protein genes evolve more rapidly than genes encoding proteins that are not involved with reproduction. The rates of synonymous substitution (dS) are similar in genes encoding seminal proteins and genes encoding "housekeeping" proteins. For the same comparison, the rate of fixation of nonsynonymous substitutions (dN) is 3 times higher in genes encoding seminal proteins, suggesting that the divergence of seminal proteins in field crickets has been accelerated by positive Darwinian selection. In spite of the contrasting characteristics of the Drosophila and Gryllus mating systems, the mean selection parameter omega and the proportion of loci estimated to be affected by positive selection are very similar. 相似文献

Mating success in males of the lek mating ant species,Pogonomyrmex occidentalis, increases with increased body size. We estimated the magnitude of the selection coefficients on components of size by collecting males in copula and comparing their morphology to that of males that were collected at the lek but that were not mating. Four characters, body mass, head width, wing length, and leg length, were measured for a sample of 225 mating and 324 nonmating males and 225 females. Significant direct selection favors increased wing length and leg length. Multiple regression of transformed variables (principal components) indicated that the increased mating success of larger males is a function of all four characters. We found no evidence of positive assortative mating on the basis of any individual character or on the multivariate general size variable (the first principal component). 相似文献

In species with high male mating effort, there is a trade-offbetween mating effort spent in a current mating and resourcesleft for future matings. Consequently, to maximize their reproductivesuccess, males have to invest strategically, saving resourcesin matings with low reproductive gain for future, more valuablematings. We found that males investedmore in copulations with high-quality females than in copulationswith low-quality females. However, males ceased to discriminateas they became older. Old males, with a relative small numberof expected future matings, did not invest differentially incopulations with high- versus low-quality females. In copulationswith low-quality females, males invested more in late thanin initial matings, whereas in matings with high-quality females,time of mating had no influence on mating effort. These resultsimply that males adaptively change their resource allocationstrategy during the course of the season. The hypothesis that adaptation to local environments can increase mating success was tested using ten replicate lines of Drosophila melanogaster adapted either to 16 °C or to 25 °C. Competitive mating trials at both temperatures were performed with males taken from a pair of lines, one adapted to each temperature. There was no average increase in mating success for males adapted to the local environment. Although one pair of lines showed the expected pattern, another pair showed the reverse pattern. In the lizard Psammodromus algirus, larger and older males showorangenuptial coloration on most of the head and are dominant oversmallerand younger, albeit sexually mature, males which donot show such extensivenuptial coloration. This raises thequestion of why young, small males delaythe development ofnuptial coloration until a later breeding season. We testedthehypothesis of social costs by manipulating the color of thehead of smallmales. The results of agonistic interactions suggestedthat small males maypay a cost in terms of being punished bylarge males. Small males with headspainted orange were stillrecognized as small by other small males, suggestingthat theywould not gain in social status relative to normal, dull, smallmales.We also manipulated the coloration of large males. Small malesshowed asimilar response toward all large males, independentof coloration. Thissuggests that in short-distance communication,males used other cues, such asbody size and behavior, whenjudging fighting ability. In staged experimentswithout malecompetition, female acceptance of matings was influenced bymalebody size but not by coloration because large males weremore successful inobtaining matings than were small males,and within each age/size categorythere was no difference inmating success between experimental and controlmales. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 Two natural populations of Ischnura graellsii were studied in north-west Spain by means of mark-release-recapture techniques. Recaptured males were a random sample of the original marked population with regard to date of marking. At O Rosal a greater proportion of young males than old males disappeared after marking; at Lourizán recaptured males were larger than unrecaptured ones.
- 2 The number of matings observed in both populations showed great daily variation. Most of the variation is accounted for by climatic variables. Most males (56–65%) and many females (41–45%) were never observed to mate.
- 3 Male LMS was highly correlated with lifespan in both populations. At O Rosal, male LMS was also positively correlated with body length, and mated males were larger than unmated males. This surprising result for a non-territorial species was due to the positive correlation between date of marking and size. There was a positive correlation between body size and mobility for males at O Rosal, but mobility was not correlated with male LMS.
- 4 As predicted by sexual selection theory, the standardized variance in male LMS was greater than in female LMS. Variation in mature lifespan explained 16% of variance in male LMS at Lourizán and 28% at O Rosal.

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) play an essential role in mate recognition in insects but the form and intensity of sexual selection on CHCs has only been evaluated in a handful of studies, and never in a natural population. We quantified sexual selection operating on CHCs in a wild population of sagebrush crickets, a species in which nuptial feeding by females imposes an unambiguous phenotypic marker on males. Multivariate selection analysis revealed a saddle-shaped fitness surface, suggesting a complex interplay between the total abundance of CHCs and specific CHC combinations in their influence on female choice. The fitness surface resulting from two axes of disruptive selection reflected a trade-off between short- and long-chained CHCs, suggesting that males may be sacrificing some level of desiccation resistance in favour of increased attractiveness. There was a significant correlation between male body size and total CHC abundance, suggesting that male CHCs provide females with a reliable cue for maximizing benefits obtained from males. Notwithstanding the conspicuousness of males’ acoustic signals, our results suggest that selection imposed on males via female mating preferences may be far more complex than previously appreciated and operating in multiple sensory modalities. 相似文献

Traits that are correlated with mating success are likely tobe subject to sexual selection. In lekking species, a male'smating success can be estimated as the number of females thathe copulates with. Earlier reviews of sexual selection in lekkingspecies have been inconclusive, suggesting that different traitsmay be important in different species. To obtain a more completeunderstanding of the outcome of sexual selection in this matingsystem, we performed a meta-analysis in which we combined theresults from different studies across a wide variety of taxa.Our aim was to synthesize available information about correlatesof male mating success in lekking species. We found that behavioraltraits such as male display activit aggression rate, and lekattendance were positively correlated with male mating success.Further, territory position was negatively correlated with malemating success, such that males with territories close to thegeometric center of the leks had higher mating success thanother males. The size of "extravagant" traits, such as birdstails and ungulate antlers, and age were positively correlatedwith male mating success. Male morphology (measure of body size)and territory size showed small effects on male mating success.Our results confirm some of the suggestions put forward by earlierreviews but add more rigor to the condusions drawn. Part ofthe variation across studies still remain unaccounted for. Traits that potentially influence mating success (MS) may be"static" with low lability once they develop or "dynamic" withhighly modifiable expression. We used principal components (PCs)analyses of dynamic behavioral and morphological traits thatare static over the short term to determine their relative contributionsto the ability of territorial male collared lizards to acquireaccess to females and obtain high MS. We estimated annual MSof males as the relative frequency with which they engaged incourtship with reproductively active resident females. ThreePCs explained statistically significant phenotypic variationamong males. Morphological traits loaded significantly on 2PCs that explained 26.3% and 13.0% of the variance, respectively,whereas behavioral variables loaded significantly on a differentcomponent that explained 15.7% of the variance in male traits.The frequency with which males initiated aggressive encounterswith same-sex competitors did not load significantly on thesePC axes. Males having behavioral PC scores above the mean hadsignificantly higher MS than those with behavioral scores belowthe mean, whereas male MS was not related to component scoresfor either of the axes describing static morphological variables.Results indicate that in our population behavior patterns associatedwith advertisement, particularly to females, influence maleMS more strongly than morphological traits or the initiationof direct aggression with same-sex competitors. 相似文献
