The Gallery forests of the Cerrado biome play a critical role in controlling stream chemistry but little information about biogeochemical processes in these ecosystems is available. This work describes the fluxes of N and P in solutions along a topographic gradient in a gallery forest. Three distinct floristic communities were identified along the gradient: a wet community nearest the stream, an upland dry community adjacent to the woodland savanna and an intermediate community between the two. Transects were marked in the three communities for sampling. Fluxes of N from bulk precipitation to these forests resulted in deposition of 12.6 kg ha?1 y?1 of total N of which 8.8 kg ha?1 was as inorganic N. The throughfall flux of total N was generally <8.4 kg ha?1 year?1. Throughfall NO3?CN fluxes were higher (7?C32%) while NH4?CN and organic N fluxes were lower (54?C69% and 5?C46%) than those in bulk precipitation. The throughfall flux was slightly lower for the wet forest community compared to other communities. Litter leachate fluxes differed among floristic communities with higher NH4?CN in the wet community. The total N flux was greater in the wet forest than in the dry forest (13.5 vs. 9.4 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively). The stream water had total N flux of 0.3 kg ha?1 year?1. The flux of total P through bulk precipitation was 0.7 kg ha?1 year?1 while the mean fluxes of total P in throughfall (0.6 kg ha?1 year?1) and litter leachate (0.5 kg ha?1 year?1) declined but did not differ between communities. The low concentrations presented in soil solution and low fluxes in stream water (0.3 and 0.1 kg ha?1 year?1 for N and P, respectively) relative to other flowpaths emphasize the conservative nutrient cycling of these forests and the importance of internal recycling processes for the maintenance and conservation of riparian and stream ecosystems in the Cerrado.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the combined effect of vegetation and N deposition on microbial community composition in forest soils. For this, microbial biomass and community structure were assessed by ester linked fatty acid methyl ester (EL-FAME) analyses for 12 European forest sites representing different forest types (coniferous/deciduous) and differing in annual N loads (2?C40 kg?N?ha?1). Microbial community composition was affected by vegetation as indicated by a higher proportion of the marker for arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungi??16:1 11???in deciduous forest soils (1.2%?C5.7% of total EL-FAMEs) compared to acidic coniferous forest soils (0.5%?C1.6%). The two pine forest sites investigated showed the highest proportion of fungi (up to 28% of total EL-FAMEs) and the lowest proportions of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria of all study sites. Nitrogen deposition rates were highly correlated with the ratios of cyclopropyl fatty acids to their precursors (r?=?0.82; P?<?0.01) and of bacteria to fungi (r?=?0.71; P?<?0.05). The two sites with the highest N deposition (??32.3 kg?N?ha?1a?1) were depleted in the marker fatty acids for AM fungi and other fungi. Our findings suggest that vegetation has a pronounced effect on microbial community structure, but this effect is masked by high N inputs (>30 kg?N?ha?1a?1).  相似文献

Aims

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of biochar on maize yield and greenhouse gases (GHGs) in a calcareous loamy soil poor in organic carbon from Henan, central great plain, China.

Methods

Biochar was applied at rates of 0, 20 and 40?t?ha?1 with or without N fertilization. With N fertilization, urea was applied at 300?kg?N ha?1, of which 60% was applied as basal fertilizer and 40% as supplementary fertilizer during crop growth. Soil emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O were monitored using closed chambers at 7?days intervals throughout the whole maize growing season (WMGS).

Results

Biochar amendments significantly increased maize production but decreased GHGs. Maize yield was increased by 15.8% and 7.3% without N fertilization, and by 8.8% and 12.1% with N fertilization under biochar amendment at 20?t?ha?1 and 40?t?ha?1, respectively. Total N2O emission was decreased by 10.7% and by 41.8% under biochar amendment at 20?t?ha?1 and 40?t?ha?1 compared to no biochar amendment with N fertilization. The high rate of biochar (40?t?ha?1) increased the total CO2 emission by 12% without N fertilization. Overall, biochar amendments of 20?t?ha?1 and 40?t?ha?1 decreased the total global warming potential (GWP) of CH4 and N2O by 9.8% and by 41.5% without N fertilization, and by 23.8% and 47.6% with N fertilization, respectively. Biochar amendments also decreased soil bulk density and increased soil total N contents but had no effect on soil mineral N.

Conclusions

These results suggest that application of biochar to calcareous and infertile dry croplands poor in soil organic carbon will enhance crop productivity and reduce GHGs emissions.  相似文献

The sustainability of using irrigation to produce food depends not only on the availability of sufficient water, but also on the soil's ‘response’ to irrigation. Stocks of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) are key components of soil organic matter (SOM), which is important for sustainable agricultural production. While there is some information about the effects of irrigation on soil C stocks in cropping systems, there is a paucity of such studies in pastoral food production systems. For this study, we sampled soils from 34 paired, irrigated and unirrigated pasture sites across New Zealand (NZ) and analysed these for total C and N. On average, irrigated pastures had significantly (< 0.05) less soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) than adjacent unirrigated pastures, with differences of 6.99 t C ha?1 and 0.58 t N ha?1 in the uppermost 0.3 m. Differences in C and N tended to occur throughout the soil profile, so the cumulative differences increased with depth, and the proportion of the soil C lost from deeper horizons was large. There were no relationships between differences in soil C and N stocks and the length of time under irrigation. This study suggests SOM will decrease when pastures under a temperate climate are irrigated. On this basis, increasing the area of temperate pasture land under irrigation would result in more CO2 in the atmosphere and may directly and indirectly increase N leaching to groundwater. Given the large and increasing area of land being irrigated both in NZ and on a global scale, there is an urgent need to determine whether the results found in this study are also applicable in other regions and under different land management systems (e.g. arable).  相似文献

Irrigated sugarcane crops on the Peruvian coastal desert require 300 kg N-fertilizer ha?1 for economically-optimum yields. About 24 kg N ha?1 is added to the systemvia irrigation water from rivers and deep wells. 1.2% of the total N in the soil is in available form during the growing season. N extracted by the aerial part of the plants ranges from 210–246 kg N ha?1 crop?1;ca. 70% of this is removed in the harvest, and most of the remainder is lostvia pre-harvest burning.  相似文献

Background and aims

Land-use change often markedly alters soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pool sizes with implications for climate change and soil sustainability. The objective of this research was to study the effect of converting paddy fields to Lei bamboo (Phyllostachys praecox) stands on soil C and N and other nutrient pools as well as the chemical structure of soil organic C (SOC) in the soil profile.

Methods

Soils (Anthrosols) from four adjacent paddy field–bamboo forest pairs with a known land-use history were sampled from Lin’an County, Zhejiang Province. Soil water soluble organic C (WSOC), hot water soluble organic C (HWSOC), microbial biomass C (MBC), readily oxidizable C (ROC), water soluble organic N (WSON), and other soil chemical and physical properties were determined. Soil organic C functional group compositions were determined by 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Results

Concentrations of soil available P, available K, and different N forms increased (P?<?0.05) by the land-use conversion. Higher concentrations of SOC and total N (TN) were observed in the subsoil (20–40 and 40–60 cm soil layers) but not in the topsoil (0–20 cm layer) in the bamboo stands than in the paddy fields. The storage of SOC and TN in the entire soil profile (0–60 cm) increased by 56.7 and 70.7 %, respectively, after the land-use change. The increases in the SOC stock of the three soil layers were 11.0, 14.3, and 9.5 Mg C ha?1, respectively. The conversion decreased WSOC concentrations in the subsoil but increased the ROC concentration in the topsoil. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy of soil samples showed that the conversion increased (P?<?0.05) the O-alkyl C content while decreased the aromatic C content, alkyl C to O-alkyl C ratio (A/O-A), and aromaticity of SOC.

Conclusions

Conversion of paddy fields to bamboo stands increased soil nutrient availability, and SOC and TN stocks. Effects of land-use change on C pools and C chemistry of SOC varied among different soil layers in the profile. The impact of the land-use conversion on soil organic C pools was not restricted to the topsoil, but changes in the subsoil were equally large and should be accounted for.  相似文献

The nitrogen (N) budget calculation approach is a useful means of evaluating the impact of human activity on the N cycle. Field scale N budget calculations may ignore the interactions between landscapes, and regional scale calculations rely on statistical data and indirect parameters. Watershed scale budget calculations allow for a more direct quantification of N inputs and outputs. We conducted N budget calculations for a rice paddy-dominated agricultural watershed in eastern China for 2007?C2009, based on intensive monitoring of stream N dynamics, atmospheric deposition, ammonia (NH3) volatilization and household interviews about N-related agricultural activities. The results showed that although total N input to the watershed was up to 280 kg N ha?1 year?1, riverine discharge was only 4.2 kg N ha?1 year?1, accounting for 1.5% of the total N input, and was further reduced to 2.0 kg N ha?1 year?1 after reservoir storage and/or denitrification removal. The low riverine N output was because of the characteristics of the rice paddy-dominated landscape, which intercepts run-off and enhances soil denitrification. The watershed actually purified the N in rainwater, as N concentrations in river discharge were much lower than those in rain water. Major N outputs included food/feed export, NH3 volatilization from chemical fertilizer and manure, and emissions from crop residue burning. Net reactive gaseous emissions (emissions minus deposition) accounted for 5.5% of the total N input, much higher than riverine discharge. Therefore, the agricultural N cycle in such paddy-dominated watersheds impacts the environment mainly through gas exchange rather than water discharge.  相似文献

The transport and deposition of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) to downwind ecosystems is significant and can be a dominant source of new N to many watersheds. Bacterially mediated denitrification in lake sediments may ameliorate the effects of N loading by permanently removing such inputs. We measured denitrification in sediments collected from lakes in the Colorado Rocky Mountains (USA) receiving elevated (5–8?kg?N?ha?1?y?1) or low (<2?kg?N?ha?1?y?1) inputs of atmospheric N deposition. The nitrate (NO3 ?) concentration was significantly greater in high-deposition lakes (11.3?μmol?l?1) compared to low-deposition lakes (3.3?μmol?l?1). Background denitrification was positively related to NO3 ? concentrations and we estimate that the sampled lakes are capable of removing a significant portion of N inputs via sediment denitrification. We also conducted a dose–response experiment to determine whether chronic N loading has altered sediment denitrification capacity. Under Michaelis–Menten kinetics, the maximum denitrification rate and half-saturation NO3 ? concentration did not differ between deposition regions and were 765?μmol?N?m?2?h?1 and 293?μmol?l?1?NO3 ?, respectively, for all lakes. We enumerated the abundances of nitrate- and nitrite-reducing bacteria and found no difference between high- and low-deposition lakes. The abundance of these bacteria was related to available light and bulk sediment resources. Our findings support a growing body of evidence that lakes play an important role in N removal and, furthermore, suggest that current levels of N deposition have not altered the abundance of denitrifying bacteria or saturated the capacity for sediment denitrification.  相似文献

Uptake and release of nutrients from ponds used for lotus cultivation were measured in ponds under short-term (1 yr) cultivation with compost application (pond I) and under long-term (20 yr) cultivation without compost application (pond II). Total inflow loads of TN (irrigation water, rainfall and compost) during lotus cultivation period in ponds I and II were 72.3 and 34.3 kg ha?1 182 day?1, respectively. TN removal rates in ponds I and II were 77.3 and 49.8% of total inflow load, respectively. Major removal mechanisms of TN were attributed to microbial processes and uptake by lotus. The total outflow loads (infiltration and runoff) of TN during the lotus cultivation period were 13.9 kg ha?1 182 day?1 (19.2% of total inflow TN load) for pond I, and 11.3 kg ha?1 182 day?1 (32.9% of total inflow TN load) for pond II. For TP the total inflow loads (irrigation water, rainfall and compost) during lotus cultivation in ponds I and II were 80.8 and 1.9 kg ha?1 182 day?1, respectively. TP removal rates in ponds I and II were 84.9 and ?274.1% of total input, respectively. Phosphorus removal was attributed to lotus uptake and soil adsorption. The total outflow loads (infiltration and runoff) of TP during lotus cultivation period were 10.1 kg ha?1 182 day?1 (12.5% of total inflow TP load) for pond I, and 6.6 kg ha?1 182 day?1 (355.6% of total inflow TP load) for pond II. TN and TP in runoff from pond I (with compost) was higher than that in pond II (without compost), showing that TN and TP in runoff were strongly influenced by compost addition. Therefore, in order to satisfy established water-quality standards, the amount of compost used in lotus cultivation should be evaluated.  相似文献

In a pristine evergreen rainforest of Nothofagus betuloides, located at the Cordillera de los Andes in southern Chile (41?°S), concentrations and fluxes of nutrients in bulk precipitation, cloud water, throughfall water, stemflow water, soil infiltration and percolation water and runoff water were measured. The main objectives of this study were to investigate canopy–soil–atmosphere interactions and to calculate input–output budgets. From May 1999 till April 2000, the experimental watershed received 8121?mm water (86% incident precipitation, 14% cloud water), of which the canopy intercepted 16%. Runoff water volume amounted 9527?mm. Bulk deposition of inorganic (DIN) and organic (DON) nitrogen amounted 3.6?kg?ha?1?year?1 and 8.2?kg?ha?1?year?1 respectively. Occult deposition (clouds?+?fog) contributes for 40% to the atmospheric nitrogen input (bulk?+?occult deposition) of the forest. An important part of the atmospheric ammonium deposition is retained within the canopy or converted to nitrate or organic nitrogen by epiphytic bacteria or lichens. Also the export of inorganic (0.9?kg?ha?1?year?1) and organic (5.2?kg?ha?1?year?1) nitrogen via runoff is lower than the input to the forest floor via throughfall and stemflow water (3.2?kg?DIN?ha?1?year?1 and 5.6?kg?DON?ha?1?year?1). The low concentrations of NO-3 and NH+4 under the rooting depth suggest an effective biological immobilization by vegetation and soil microflora. Dry deposition and foliar leaching of base cations (K+, Ca2+, Mg2+) was estimated using a canopy budget model. Bulk deposition accounted for about 50% of the total atmospheric input. Calculated dry and occult deposition are both of equal value (about 25%). Foliar leaching of K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ accounted for 45%, 38% and 6% of throughfall deposition respectively. On an annual basis, the experimental watershed was a net source for Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+.  相似文献

Responses of soil organic carbon (SOC) cycling and C budget in forest ecosystems to elevated nitrogen (N) deposition are divergent. Little is known about the N critical loads for the shift between gain and loss of SOC storage in the old-growth temperate forest of Northeast China. The objective of this study was to investigate the nonlinear responses of SOC concentration and composition to multiple rates of N addition, as well as the microbial mechanisms responsible for SOC alteration under N enrichment. Nine rates of urea addition (0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 kg N ha?1 year?1) with 4 replicates for each treatment were conducted. Soil samples in the 0–10 cm mineral layer were taken after 3 years of N fertilization. Soil aggregate size distribution and SOC physical fractionation were performed to examine SOC dynamics. Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) technique was used to measure the abundance and structure of microbial community. Three years of N addition led to significant increases in the concentrations of soil particulate organic C and aggregate-associated organic C fractions only. The responses of total N and each labile SOC fraction to the rates of N addition followed Gaussian equations, with the N critical loads being estimated to be between 80 and 100 kg N ha?1 year?1. The change in SOC concentration (ΔSOC) was positively correlated with the changes in aggregate associated OC (r2 > 0.80) and POC concentrations (r2 > 0.50). Significant correlations among the concentrations of labile SOC fractions, the percentages of soil aggregates, and the abundances of microbial PLFAs were observed, which implies a close linkage between microbial community structure and SOC accumulation and stability. Our results suggest that increase in soil moisture and shift of microbial community structure could control the critical N load for the switch between C accumulation and loss. The current N deposition rate (~ 11 kg N ha?1 year?1) to the northeast China’s forests is favorable for soil C accumulation over the short term.  相似文献

Pristine peatlands have generally low nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions but drainage and management practices enhance the microbial processes and associated N2O emissions. It is assumed that leaving peat soils from intensive management, such as agriculture, will decrease their N2O emissions. In this paper we report how the annual N2O emission rates will change when agricultural peat soil is either left abandoned or afforested and also N2O emissions from afforested peat extraction sites. In addition, we evaluated a biogeochemical model (DNDC) with a view to explaining GHG emissions from peat soils under different land uses. The abandoned agricultural peat soils had lower mean annual N2O emissions (5.5?±?5.4?kg?N?ha?1) than the peat soils in active agricultural use in Finland. Surprisingly, N2O emissions from afforested organic agricultural soils (12.8?±?9.4?kg?N?ha?1) were similar to those from organic agricultural soils in active use. These emissions were much higher than those from the forests on nutrient rich peat soils. Abandoned and afforested peat extraction sites emitted more N2O, (2.4?±?2.1?kg?N?ha?1), than the areas under active peat extraction (0.7?±?0.5?kg?N?ha?1). Emissions outside the growing season contributed significantly, 40% on an average, to the annual emissions. The DNDC model overestimated N2O emission rates during the growing season and indicated no emissions during winter. The differences in the N2O emission rates were not associated with the age of the land use change, vegetation characteristics, peat depth or peat bulk density. The highest N2O emissions occurred when the soil C:N ratio was below 20 with a significant variability within the measured C:N range (13–27). Low soil pH, high nitrate availability and water table depth (50–70?cm) were also associated with high N2O emissions. Mineral soil has been added to most of the soils studied here to improve the fertility and this may have an impact on the N2O emissions. We infer from the multi-site dataset presented in this paper that afforestation is not necessarily an efficient way to reduce N2O emissions from drained boreal organic fields.  相似文献

In the agricultural areas near Santiago, Chile,ca. 780 kg N ha?1 yr?1 are added to vegetable cropsvia irrigation with untreated sewage effluent draining from the metropolitan area. Nitrate levels in surface wells in the area, from which drinking water is derived, often exceed established limits for human consumption. Of the 779 kg N ha?1 added to crops in one year, 161–287 kg N ha?1 yr?1 were removed by crop harvest and much of the remainder apparently eventually leached to the 1–15 m deep water table.  相似文献

Organic and inorganic carbon (C) fluxes transported by water were evaluated for dominant hydrologic flowpaths on two adjacent headwater catchments in the Brazilian Amazon with distinct soils and hydrologic responses from September 2003 through April 2005. The Ultisol-dominated catchment produced 30% greater volume of storm-related quickflow (overland flow and shallow subsurface flow) compared to the Oxisol-dominated catchment. Quickflow fluxes were equivalent to 3.2 ± 0.2% of event precipitation for the Ultisol catchment, compared to 2.5 ± 0.3% for the Oxisol-dominated watershed (mean response ±1 SE, n = 27 storms for each watershed). Hydrologic responses were also faster on the Ultisol watershed, with time to peak flow occurring 10 min earlier on average as compared to the runoff response on the Oxisol watershed. These different hydrologic responses are attributed primarily to large differences in saturated hydraulic conductivity (K s). Overland flow was found to be an important feature on both watersheds. This was evidenced by the response rates of overland flow detectors (OFDs) during the rainy season, with overland flow intercepted by 54 ± 0.5% and 65 ± 0.5% of OFDs for the Oxisol and Ultisol watersheds respectively during biweekly periods. Small volumes of quickflow correspond to large fluxes of dissolved organic C (DOC); DOC concentrations of the hydrologic flowpaths that comprise quickflow are an order of magnitude higher than groundwater flowpaths fueling base flow (19.6 ± 1.7 mg l−1 DOC for overland flow and 8.8 ± 0.7 mg l−1 DOC for shallow subsurface flow versus 0.50 ± 0.04,mg l−1 DOC in emergent groundwater). Concentrations of dissolved inorganic C (DIC, as dissolved CO2–C plus HCO3–C) in groundwater were found to be an order of magnitude greater than quickflow DIC concentrations (21.5 mg l−1 DIC in emergent groundwater versus 1.1 mg l−1 DIC in overland flow). The importance of deeper flowpaths in the transport of inorganic C to streams is indicated by the 40:1 ratio of DIC:DOC for emergent groundwater. Dissolved CO2–C represented 92% of DIC in emergent groundwater. Results from this study illustrate a highly dynamic and tightly coupled linkage between the C cycle and the hydrologic cycle for both Ultisol and Oxisol landscapes: organic C fluxes strongly tied to flowpaths associated with quickflow, and inorganic C (particularly dissolved CO2) transported via deeper flowpaths.  相似文献

Carbon (C) storage and sequestration in agricultural soils is considered to be an important issue in the study of terrestrial C cycling and global climatic change. The baseline C stock and the C sequestration potential are among the criteria for a region or a state to adopt strategies or policies in response to commitment to the Kyoto Protocol. Paddy soils represent a large portion of global cropland. However, little information on the potential of C sequestration and storage is available for such soils. In this paper, an estimation of the topsoil soil organic carbon (SOC) pool and the sequestration potential of paddy soils in China was made by using the data from the 2nd State Soil Survey carried out during 1979–1982 and from the nationwide arable soil monitoring system established since then. Results showed that the SOC density ranged from 12 to 226 t C ha?1 with an area‐weighted mean density of 44 t C ha?1, which is comparable to that of the US grasslands and is higher than that of the cultivated dryland soils in China and the US. The estimated total topsoil SOC pool is 1.3 Pg, with 0.85 Pg from the upper plow layer and 0.45 Pg from the plowpan layer. This pool size is ~2% of China's total storage in the top 1 m of the soil profiles and ~4% of the total topsoil pool, while the area percentage of paddy soil is 3.4% of the total land. The C pool in paddy soils was found predominantly in southeast China geographically and in the subgroups of Fe‐accumulating and Fe‐leaching paddy soils pedogenetically. In comparison with dryland cultivation, irrigation‐based rice cultivation in China has induced significant enrichment of SOC storage (0.3 Pg) in paddy soils. The induced total C sequestration equals half of China's total annual CO2 emission in the 1990s. Estimates using different SOC sequestration scenarios show that the paddy soils of China have an easily attainable SOC sequestration potential of 0.7 Pg under present conditions and may ultimately sequester 3.0 Pg. Soil monitoring data showed that the current C sequestration rate is 12 Tg yr?1. The total C sequestration potential and the current sequestration rate of the paddy soils are over 30%, while the area of the paddy soils is 26% that of China's total croplands. Therefore, practicing sustainable agriculture is urgently needed for enhancing SOC storage to realize the ultimate SOC sequestration of rice‐based agriculture of China, as the current C sequestration rate is significantly lower than the potential rate.  相似文献

The lack of good irrigation practices and policy reforms in Pakistan triggers major threats to the water and food security of the country. In the future, irrigation will happen under the scarcity of water, as inadequate irrigation water becomes the requirement rather than the exception. The precise application of water with irrigation management is therefore needed. This research evaluated the wheat grain yield and water use efficiency (WUE) under limited irrigation practices in arid and semi-arid regions of Pakistan. DSSAT was used to simulate yield and assess alternative irrigation scheduling based on different levels of irrigation starting from the actual irrigation level up to 65% less irrigation. The findings demonstrated that different levels of irrigation had substantial effects on wheat grain yield and total water consumption. After comparing the different irrigation levels, the high amount of actual irrigation level in semi-arid sites decreased the WUE and wheat grain yield. However, the arid site (Site-1) showed the highest wheat grain yield 2394 kg ha?1 and WUE 5.9 kg?3 on actual irrigation (T1), and with the reduction of water, wheat grain yield decreased continuously. The optimal irrigation level was attained on semi-arid (site-2) with 50% (T11) less water where the wheat grain yield and WUE were 1925 kg ha?1 and 4.47 kg?3 respectively. The best irrigation level was acquired with 40% less water (T9) on semi-arid (site-3), where wheat grain yield and WUE were 1925 kg ha?1 and 4.57 kg?3, respectively. The results demonstrated that reducing the irrigation levels could promote the growth of wheat, resulting in an improved WUE. In crux, significant potential for further improving the efficiency of agricultural water usage in the region relies on effective soil moisture management and efficient use of water.  相似文献

Production of energy crops is promoted as a means to mitigate global warming by decreasing dependency on fossil energy. However, agricultural production of bioenergy can have various environmental effects depending on the crop and production system. In a field trial initiated in 2008, nitrate concentration in soil water was measured below winter wheat, grass‐clover and willow during three growing seasons. Crop water balances were modelled to estimate the amount of nitrate leached per hectare. In addition, dry matter yields and nitrogen (N) yields were measured, and N balances and energy balances were calculated. In willow, nitrate concentrations were up to approximately 20 mg l?1 nitrate‐N during the establishment year, but declined subsequently to <5 mg l?1 nitrate‐N, resulting in an annual N leaching loss of 18, 3 and 0.3 kg ha?1 yr?1 N in the first 3 years after planting. A similar trend was observed in grass‐clover where concentrations stabilized at 2–4 mg l?1 nitrate‐N from the beginning of the second growing season, corresponding to leaching of approximately 5 kg ha?1 yr?1 N. In winter wheat, an annual N leaching loss of 36–68 kg ha?1 yr?1 was observed. For comparison, nitrate leaching was also measured in an old willow crop established in 1996 from which N leaching ranged from 6 to 27 kg ha?1 yr?1. Dry matter yields ranged between 5.9 and 14.8 Mg yr?1 with lowest yield in the newly established willow and the highest yield harvested in grass‐clover. Grass‐clover gave the highest net energy yield of 244 GJ ha?1 yr?1, whereas old willow, winter wheat and first rotation willow gave net energy yields of 235, 180 and 105 GJ ha?1 yr?1. The study showed that perennial crops can provide high energy yields and significantly reduce N losses compared to annual crops.  相似文献

Soil moisture and nitrogen (N) are two of the most important factors affecting the production of medicinal plants. So, the management strategy of these factors is critical and to be identified. In order to study the application of zeolite (Z) (0 and 10 ton ha?1) in S. officinalis culture medium under different irrigation regimes (30 % depletion of available soil water (ASW)) and 60 % depletion of ASW) and N (0, 75 and 150 kg N ha?1) a split-factorial experiment was carried out with three replicates in 2018. The highest fresh and dry weight were achieved at irrigation after 30 % depletion of ASW while using 150 kg N ha?1 and 10 ton Z ha?1. Maximum water use efficiency (WUE) (22.10 g.L-1) was obtained after 60 % depletion of ASW and 150 kg N ha?1 and 10 ton Z ha?1. Besides, the maximum nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) was obtained after 60 % depletion of ASW and 75 kg N ha?1 and 10 ton Z ha?1 (14.25 kg.kg-1N). Maximum essential oil (EO) content (1.06%) and cis-Thujone were obtained from plants subjected to 60 % depletion of ASW and, application of 75 kg N ha?1 and 10 ton Z ha?1. Applying Z with N, in different irrigation regimes did improve soil conditions for achieving higher, WUE and NUE, increased the EO content and yield while decreasing the negative effects from water-deficit stress and has provided a direction towards a stable system.  相似文献

Biochar soil amendment (BSA) had been advocated as a promising approach to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in agriculture. However, the net GHG mitigation potential of BSA remained unquantified with regard to the manufacturing process and field application. Carbon footprint (CF) was employed to assess the mitigating potential of BSA by estimating all the direct and indirect GHG emissions in the full life cycles of crop production including production and field application of biochar. Data were obtained from 7 sites (4 sites for paddy rice production and 3 sites for maize production) under a single BSA at 20 t/ha?1 across mainland China. Considering soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and GHG emission reduction from syngas recycling, BSA reduced the CFs by 20.37–41.29 t carbon dioxide equivalent ha?1 (CO2‐eq ha?1) and 28.58–39.49 t CO2‐eq ha?1 for paddy rice and maize production, respectively, compared to no biochar application. Without considering SOC sequestration and syngas recycling, the net CF change by BSA was in a range of ?25.06 to 9.82 t CO2‐eq ha?1 and ?20.07 to 5.95 t CO2‐eq ha?1 for paddy rice and maize production, respectively, over no biochar application. As the largest contributors among the others, syngas recycling in the process of biochar manufacture contributed by 47% to total CF reductions under BSA for rice cultivation while SOC sequestration contributed by 57% for maize cultivation. There was a large variability of the CF reductions across the studied sites whether in paddy rice or maize production, due likely to the difference in GHG emission reductions and SOC increments under BSA across the sites. This study emphasized that SOC sequestration should be taken into account the CF calculation of BSA. Improved biochar manufacturing technique could achieve a remarkable carbon sink by recycling the biogas for traditional fossil‐fuel replacement.  相似文献

Green harvest sugarcane management has increased soil organic C and N stocks over time. However, emerging sugarcane straw removal to meet increasing bioenergy demands has raised concerns about soil C and N depletions. Thus, we conducted a field study in southeast Brazil over nearly three years (1100 days) for assessing soil C and N responses to increasing sugarcane straw removal rates. In order to detect the C input as a function of the different amounts of straw over three years, a field simulation was performed, where the original soil layer (0–0.30 m) was replaced by another from an adjacent area with low total C and δ13C. The treatments tested were as follows: (i) 0 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., 100% removal), (ii) 3.5 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., 75% removal), (iii) 7.0 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., 50% removal), (iv) 14.0 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., no removal), and (v) 21.0 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., no removal + extra 50% of the straw left on the field). The results showed that sugarcane straw removal affected the soil C and total N pools. In the first 45 days of straw decomposition, a small but important straw-derived C portion enters into the soil as dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The lower the straw removal rate, the higher was straw-derived DOC content found into the soil, down to 0.50 m depth. After 3 years of management, keeping sugarcane straw on soil surface significantly increased C and N stocks within surface soil layer (0–0.025 m). Our findings suggest that under no straw removal management (i.e., 14 Mg ha?1), approximately 364 kg ha?1 of C and 23 kg ha?1 of N are annually stored into this low-C soil. The contribution of the straw-derived C (C-C4) to the total soil C increases over time, which accounted for about 60% under no straw removal rate. The greatest contribution of the C storage preferentially occurs into the fraction of organic matter (<?0.53 μm) associated with soil clay minerals. We concluded that indiscriminate sugarcane straw removal to produce cellulosic ethanol or bioelectricity depletes soil C stocks and reduces N cycling in sugarcane fields, impairing environmental gains associated with bioenergy production. Therefore, this information, linked with other agronomic and environmental issues, should be taken into account towards a more sustainable straw removal management for bioenergy production in Brazil.  相似文献
