The fast–slow continuum hypothesis has been proposed to explain the diversity of life-history patterns exhibited by biological populations, but the quantification and population-dynamic consequences of the continuum has remained unclear. I used the ratio of fertility rate to age at first reproduction (F/α ratio) to quantify the tempo of life-history of 138 populations of mammals, and investigated the life-history and population-dynamic consequences of being “fast” or “slow”. “Fast” mammals (F/α>0.60) were characterized by early maturity, short lifespans, low survival rates, and high fertility and projected population growth rate (λ) compared to “slow” (F/α<0.15) mammals. In “fast” populations, λ was overwhelmingly most sensitive to changes in reproductive parameters (age at first reproduction and fertility rates) and relatively insensitive to changes in survival rates. In “slow” populations, λ was very sensitive to changes in juvenile or adult survival rates, and relatively insensitive to changes in reproductive parameters. The pattern of relationships between the F/α ratio and life-history variables, λ, and elasticity of λ to changes in life-history variables persisted even after the effects of body size and phylogeny were statistically removed. These results suggest that fast–slow continuum in mammalian life-history is independent of body size or phylogeny, that the F/α ratio adequately quantifies the position of a population along a fast–slow continuum, and that the tempo of life- histories has substantial population-dynamic consequences.

Phylogenetic relationships are complex within the Lithospermeae, a large subgroup of the Boraginaceae s.str. The relationships of New World Lasiarrhenum, Macromeria, Nomosa, Onosmodium, Perittostoma, and Psilolaemus to subcosmopolitan and much larger Lithospermum have not been critically investigated in the recent past. No molecular data on the phylogeny of these genera and Lithospermum have so far been published. We investigated the relationships within Lithospermeae using three loci (nuclear ITS plus 5.8S rRNA, chloroplast trnL-F-spacer, and trnS-G-spacer) and micromorphological character traits (pollen, nutlets). Lithospermum s.l. constitutes the sistergroup of Asian Ulugbekia and is monophyletic only when its American segregates “Macromeria”, monotypic Nomosa, and Onosmodium are included. Both the African and the South American species groups of Lithospermum are monophyletic, but North American representatives are not resolved in a single clade. Morphological characters that have been considered as important for generic delimitation in the past (such as large, yellow corollas without faucal scales, particular pollen types, coarsely veined leaves, shrubby habit) have evolved in at least two only distantly related lineages within Lithospermum s.l. The reduction of American “Macromeria”, Nomosa, and Onosmodium as well as Asian Ulugbekia under Lithospermum is proposed to render the latter monophyletic. This redefined Lithospermum s.l. appears to have undergone a type of recent “island radiation” in the Americas, reflected in a morphological diversity far exceeding that found in the Old World.  相似文献

Polyads, called also massulae, are common in the Mimosaceae. Within this family, only in Calliandra (s. l.) polyads show a remarkable morphological variation: 16-grained lens-shaped massulae in the neotropical Zapoteca (syn. Calliandra p.p.), and highly asymmetric eight-grained massulae in Calliandra (s. str.). As a further specialisation the massulae in Calliandra (s. str.) possess a sticky appendage called a viscin body. The form and ontogeny of this unique two-dimensional construction of the massula is of particular interest. In Calliandra (s. str.) the octad is normally the developmental product of the initiation stage, beginning with one pollen mother cell (PMC). In total, Calliandra (s. str.) possesses eight PMCs in each anther. The dicotyledons are characterised by the simultaneous type of cytokinesis, but wall formation in Calliandra (s. str.) during meiotic division is successive, as common in monocotyledons. The first wall divides the PMC diagonally, and during the tetrad period, two clear variants of tetrads are found. One shows the typical rhomboidal arrangement and the other forms two congruent symmetrical halves. The latter probably results from early fixed, quite inflexible walls. The cells of tetrad do not separate, and four successive mitotic divisions give rise to the eight-celled massula. The direction of growth of the PMC and the massula, the sequence of division, and the position of the walls all show a strict polarity. The normal number of eight cells in each massula is sometimes exceeded without loss of viability.Calliandra (s. str.) lacks a developed “Pollenkitt”, and its asymmetrical massula is combined with the viscin body, which is involved in pollination. This viscin body is located on a specialised pollen grain at the top of the massula. With the viscin body, Calliandra (s. str.) massulae have a mechanism for immediate and persistent attachment to different surfaces. SEM is used to understand the mechanisms of attachment in detail. Furthermore, the relation between pollinators and the massula shape is investigated. Massula transport and the role of the viscin body in pollen–stigma interaction are discussed as well. The stigma of Calliandra (s. str.) is papillate and in the receptive stage, it is characterised by acquisition of a copious exudate.Zapoteca (syn. Calliandra p.p.) massulae could be distinguished histochemically from those of Calliandra (s. str.) by the main components of the “Pollenkitt”. Histochemical and physical properties of the viscin body suggest a waxy nature, including lipids in combination with unsaturated fatty acids. Proteins are present in less amounts and polysaccharides and polyglucans are absent. These results are discussed in relation to analogous phenomena in other families. The term “apex cell” is introduced to indicate the specialisation of the tip-cell of the massula by ontogeny and polarity.  相似文献

The African weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii is well known for its electrosensory capabilities. These animals can detect and distinguish objects through active electrolocation in complete darkness. Because of their nocturnal lifestyle, a low contribution of vision for orientation and object detection has been expected. However, as we show in this review, the retina of G. petersii is highly specialized with hundreds of rods and tens of cones grouped together in bundles in a complex way, ensheathed by a tapetum lucidum. The structure of the bundles goes beyond what would be expected if only photon catch was supposed to be increased. During daytime, the structure of these “macro-receptors” changes dramatically depending on retinomotor movements. During the day, the rods and cones are located in different compartments of the bundle, separated by a narrow canal in the form of a “bottle neck”. Investigations on cell structure and neurochemistry in the retina indicate a general organization that is simpler in terms of bipolar and ganglion cell diversity than in tetrachromatic species such as goldfish, yet similar in terms of neurochemical differentiation of amacrine cells. In both respects, the inner retina of the elephantnose fish bears the greatest similarity to catfish and some deep-sea fish retinae. Neuronal circuits and bundle structure give hints of possible adaptations for contrast and/or movement detection. Behavioral experiments suggest that, in contrast to the vision specialists Lepomis gibbosus, pattern detection of G. petersii is not affected by higher spatial frequencies. A pattern of low spatial frequencies, however, was equally well detected by G. petersii and L. gibbosus. Optomotor response experiments indicate that motion vision is important for Gnathonemus, narrowing down the search for the functional specialization of the Gnathonemus retina and providing a starting point for work on multisensory integration in these fish.  相似文献

The South African members of Australopithecus form a single group, trending from earlier, more gracile or smaller forms, to later, more robust or larger forms, in accordance with the “Law of Cope”. This is supported by the evidence of the lower first deciduous molar: it is only slightly molarized in the earlier, smaller forms and astonishingly heavily molarized in the later, robust forms, such as that of Kromdraai. Hence, Robinson's view that two different genera are represented by the gracile and robust forms is not supported here. A. robustus is seen as a late offshoot of the Australopithecus stem. The resemblance of the Taung dm1 to that of Sinanthropus, except for the more differentiated talonid of the Taung specimen, suggests that the separation of the Australopithecinae and Homininae must have taken place at an earlier stage than that represented by the oldest South African Australopithecinae. The lower jaw of Meganthropus of Java combines certain characteristics of A. africanus with those of A. robustus: Meganthropus might provisionally be called “Australopithecoid”. The geographically intermediate India has yielded a hominid, Ramapithecus punjabicus, but the author does not consider “Kenyapithecus” to be a hominid. “K. wickeri” is a pongid species of its own and “K. africanus” a Proconsul. Ramapithecus sensu stricto is known only from the Indian Siwaliks and the author suggests that the transition from Ramapithecus to a still unknown Australopithecus took place in the same region prior to their migration into Africa and Southeast Asia.  相似文献

A review of species in the genus Praon Haliday, 1833 is presented. Twenty described species are keyed and illustrated with scanning electron micrographs and line drawings. The Praon species presented in this work have been identified from 67 aphid taxa occurring on 120 plant taxa. Furthermore, 87 original parasitoid–aphid–plant associations of the species mentioned in the key are presented. Phylogenetic relationships among Praon species are reconstructed using parsimony and cladistic distance methods. Praon abjectum is the sister taxon to the remaining Praon species. We recognized three species group: “Parapraon”, “dorsale-yomenae” and “rosaecola”. Monophyly is suggested for “Parapraon” species group and paraphyly for “dorsale-yomenae” group. Finally, by phylogenetic reconstruction, a close phylogenetic relationship between “Parapraon” and “dorsale-yomenae” species group was found.  相似文献

One subclass of B12-requiring enzymes is now known to bind their B12 coenzymes “base-off,” with a histidine residue from the protein supplying an imidazole ligand to the cobalt center. Recent results from Sirovatka and Finke (J.M. Sirovatka and R.G. Finke, J.Am. Chem. Soc. 119, (1997) 3057) show that imidazole has an extraordinary trans effect on the mode of carbon–cobalt bond cleavage in coenzyme B12 analogs, compared to pyridine or the natural 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole ligand, and it was suggested that a differential steric effect could, in part, account for the uniqueness of the imidazole ligand. Such a differential steric effect for imidazole and pyridine is now demonstrated by studies of the thermodynamics of ligation of these ligands to the α and β diastereomers of two alkylcobinamides (RCbi+s, derivatives of cobalamins which lack the normal axial nucleotide) based on the known differences in steric crowding of the α (“lower”) and β (“upper”) axial ligand positions of cobalt corrinoids. Imidazole binds more tightly than pyridine to both diastereomers of NCCH2Cbi+ and CF3Cbi+, in all cases due to a more favorable entropy change, which is the result of lowered steric interference with corrin side chain thermal motions.  相似文献

The extracellular giant hemoglobin from the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris was reconstructed at 14.9-Å resolution from cryo-electron microscope images, using a new procedure for estimating parameters of the contrast transfer (CTF) function. In this approach, two important CTF parameters, defocus and amplitude contrast ratio, can be refined iteratively within the framework of 3D projection alignment procedure, using minimization of sign disagreement between theoretical CTF and cross-resolution curves. The 3D cryo-EM map is in overall good agreement with the recent X-ray crystallography map of Royer et al. (2000, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 97, 7107–7111), and it reveals the local threefold arrangement of the three linker chains present within each 1/12 of the complex. The 144 globin chains and 36 linker chains within the complex are clearly visible, and the interdigitation of the 12 coiled-coil helical spokes forming the central toroidal piece is confirmed. Based on these findings, two mechanisms of the dodecameric unit assembly are proposed and termed “zigzag” and “pairwise” polymerizations. However, the detection by cryo-EM of 12 additional rod-like bodies within the toroid raises the possibility that the architecture of the toroid is more complex than previously thought or that yet unknown ligands or allosteric effectors for this oxygen carrier are present.  相似文献

Recent investigations in the Urals and East-European Platform as well as study of corals collections from South Primorye (Russian Far East) and South-Eastern Pamirs have been undertaken. Antitropical rugose associations include taxa that are bounded in their distribution by the temperate zones of the Boreal and Perigondwanan realms. They occur sporadically in tropical latitudes but never form abundant and diverse communities. Antitropical associations are represented by the so-called ‘Cyathaxonia fauna’ (sensu lato), predominating in two selected stratigraphic intervals. The abrupt change of taxonomic composition from colonial to ‘Cyathaxonia fauna’ allows the separation of two assemblages: (i) mid Artinskian–Kungurian and (ii) Roadian–Wordian. The key regions for comparison are the Urals (mid Artinskian–Kungurian), Spitsbergen (Kungurian–Wordian), East-European Platform (Roadian), Texas (mid Artinskian–Kungurian), South Primorye (Wordian–Capitanian), South-Eastern Pamirs (Upper Artinskian), and the Sverdrup Basin (Wordian). The Late Artinskian fauna of the South-Eastern Pamirs and Wordian faunas of South Primorye bear features of mixed assemblages. A few models of the origination of antitropical assemblages are acceptable: (i) the convergent parallel evolution of Lophophyllidium in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere, (ii) a similar evolution trend developed in parallel in three geographically distant regions: Verbeekiella, Pseudowannerophyllum, and “Pseudoverbeekiella”, and (iii) immigration of some species within temperate zones caused by current circulation changes both in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, as well as northward spreading of terranes in the Perigondwanan Realm.  相似文献

Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE, EC 3.1.1.8) is important in human cocaine metabolism despite its limited ability to hydrolyze this drug. Efforts to improve the catalytic efficiency of this enzyme have led to a quadruple mutant cocaine hydrolase, “CocH”, that in animal models of addiction appears promising for treatment of overdose and relapse. We incorporated the CocH mutations into a BChE–albumin fusion protein, “Albu-CocH”, and evaluated the pharmacokinetics of the enzyme after i.v. injection in rats. As assessed from the time course of cocaine hydrolyzing activity in plasma, Albu-CocH redistributed into extracellular fluid (16% of estimated total body water) with a t1/2 of 0.66 h and it underwent elimination with a t1/2 of 8 h. These results indicate that the enzyme has ample stability for short-term applications and may be suitable for longer-term treatment as well. Present data also confirm the markedly enhanced power of Albu-CocH for cocaine hydrolysis and they support the view that Albu-CocH might prove valuable in treating phenomena associated with cocaine abuse.  相似文献

“Red tide” events are frequent and periodical in Bahía de Mazatlán, Sinaloa, México. Yet, the ones observed from 4 February to 4 June 2000, showed some distinctive features: First, the dinoflagellates Prorocentrum balticum (85%), P. mexicanum (5%), and Ceratium furca (5%), dominated the composition of the blooms; Second, the average cell abundance by date was 1.3×106 cells l−1, with a range of 3.5×103 to 24,500 × 103 cells l−1, well above previous records; Third, the temperature registered at 10–20 m deep was unusually cold (19 °C), below the normal average of 21.5 °C observed over the last 10 years. Salinity was high (35.9 psu) and showed very little influence on the water density gradient. A mean thermal stratification index (TSI), of 3.4, with a maximum of 7 °C, was observed throughout the period, in spite of a weak upwelling activity and intermittent strong NW winds which were unable to break up water column stratification. Temperature fluctuations at the surface and at the bottom layers showed a 30-day periodicity, suggesting some association with the lunar cycle. To explain the characteristics of the “red tides” registered in Bahía de Mazatlán during the winter–spring period of year 2000, it is proposed that the temperature and density stratification, stabilized further by internal waves that compensated for the weak upwelling activity and provided the necessary nutrients to the surface layer, favored the persistence and intensity of the harmful algal bloom events then observed.  相似文献

Zooarchaeological remains from San Salvador, Bahamas, reveal trends in pre-Columbian exploitation of terrestrial, intertidal, and marine resources during the period A.D. 950–1500. Significant declines in quantities and weights of Gecarcinidae (land crabs), weights of mollusks, such as Cittarium pica (West Indian top shell) and Chiton tuberculatus/Acanthopleura granulata (chitons), and body sizes of both Sparisoma viride (stoplight parrotfish) and Serranidae (sea basses and groupers) all indicate prehistoric overexploitation. Declines in total number of identified marine taxa as well as average trophic levels of exploited marine vertebrates suggest reduced species diversity and “fishing down the marine food web.” These findings indicate that a relatively minor prehistoric human population (500–1000 people) can have significant environmental impacts, especially on small, vulnerable island ecosystems.  相似文献

Occasional spontaneous “action potentiais” are found in mature hyphae of the fungus Neurospora crassa. They can arise either from low-level sinusoidal oscillations of the membrane potential or from a linear slow depolarization which accelerates into a rapid upstroke at a voltage 5–20 mV depolarized from the normal resting potential (near − 180 mV). The “action potentiais” are long-lasting, 1–2 min and at the peak reach a membrane potential near −40 mV. A 2− to 8−fold increase of membrane conductance accompanies the main depolarization, but a slight decrease of membrane conductance occurs during the slow depolarization. Two plausible mechanisms for the phenomenon are (a) periodic increases of membrane permeability to inorganic ions, particularly H+ or Cl- and (b) periodic decreases in activity of the major electrogenic pump (H+) of the Neurospora membrane, coupled with a nonlinear (inverse sigmoid) current-voltage relationship.Identification of action potential-like disturbances in fungi means that such behavior has now been found in all major biologic taxa which have been probed with suitable electrodes. As yet there is no obvious function for the events in fungi.  相似文献

“Bryndza” is a traditional Slovak dairy product (type of soft cheese) made from sheep cheese which was ripened for 14 days. Because its manufacture, transporting and/or storing represent conditions which facilitate contamination, the effect of enterocin CCM4231 in “bryndza” was investigated with the aim to reduce the contaminant agents. “Bryndza” was divided into equal portions (50 g). The experimental sample (ES) as well as the control sample one (C1) were inoculated with Listeria innocua Li1 strain. The other control samples C2 and C3 were without Li1 strain. C3 control was selected as a reference control. ES and C2 portions were treated with purified enterocin CCM4231 in a concentration of 6400 AU/ml. Before the experimental inoculation, “bryndza” was checked for the presence of contaminant agents. The experiment lasted 1 week and the samples were stored in the refrigerator at 4 °C. Sampling was performed on day 1, on day 4 and on day 7. The control samples C2 and C3 were checked only on day 1 and then after 1 week. The following contaminant agents were detected in “bryndza” before its experimental inoculation with L. innocua Li1 strain: Escherichia coli in the amount 103 cfu/ml/g, Staphylococcus aureus (102 cfu/ml/g) and enterococci (104 cfu/ml/g). In the control sample C2, the number of E. coli was reduced to 102 cfu/ml/g. Enterococci and staphylococci were totally eliminated there. Concerning C3 control, natural decrease of bacteria was found and/or their unchanged counts. The value of pH (5) was stable during the whole experiment. In the experimental sample inoculated with Li1 strain, its counts were decreased immediately after enterocin CCM4231 addition approximately by one order of magnitude. This inhibitory effect was also detectable on day 4 by the difference of one order of magnitude between ES and C1. On day 7, 103 cfu/ml/g of Li1 strain were detected in both samples (ES, C1). The difference by one order of magnitude indicated, an inhibitory effect of enterocin CCM4231 in “bryndza”. However, bacteriocin activity was not determined by laboratory analyses.  相似文献

Aspergillus flavus is a common filamentous fungus that produces aflatoxins and presents a major threat to agriculture and human health. Previous phylogenetic studies of A. flavus have shown that it consists of two subgroups, called groups I and II, and morphological studies indicated that it consists of two morphological groups based on sclerotium size, called “S” and “L.” The industrially important non-aflatoxin-producing fungus A. oryzae is nested within group I. Three different gene regions, including part of a gene involved in aflatoxin biosynthesis (omt12), were sequenced in 33 S and L strains of A. flavus collected from various regions around the world, along with three isolates of A. oryzae and two isolates of A. parasiticus that were used as outgroups. The production of B and G aflatoxins and cyclopiazonic acid was analyzed in the A. flavus isolates, and each isolate was identified as “S” or “L” based on sclerotium size. Phylogenetic analysis of all three genes confirmed the inference that group I and group II represent a deep divergence within A. flavus. Most group I strains produced B aflatoxins to some degree, and none produced G aflatoxins. Four of six group II strains produced both B and G aflatoxins. All group II isolates were of the “S” sclerotium phenotype, whereas group I strains consisted of both “S” and “L” isolates. Based on the omt12 gene region, phylogenetic structure in sclerotium phenotype and aflatoxin production was evident within group I. Some non-aflatoxin-producing isolates of group I had an omt12 allele that was identical to that found in isolates of A. oryzae.  相似文献

The purpose of the current experiment was to investigate the impacts of grinding and pelleting procedures applied to wheat in a wheat–rapeseed meal diet on the coefficients of standardized ileal digestibility, i.e., apparent digestibility corrected for basal endogenous losses (CSID), and true ileal digestibility, i.e., apparent digestibility corrected for total endogenous losses (CTID), of nitrogen (N) and amino acids (AA) in pigs. Ileal digestibility was measured by collecting digesta from pigs fitted with ileorectal anastomoses. Four diets, involving four technological treatments applied to wheat, were compared in vivo according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design (four pigs each fed four diets during four successive periods of 1 week). The technological treatments of wheat were two grinding procedures and two pelleting processes. Wheat was ground to obtain mean flour particle sizes of 1000 and 500 μm, leading after mixing with rapeseed meal and minerals-vitamins premix to the first and second diets named “coarse” and “fine”, respectively. Part of the 500 μm wheat flour was pelleted through dies of same screen diameter (4 mm) but different thicknesses, 16 and 20 mm, inducing a low and high compression ratio, leading after mixing with rapeseed meal and premix to the third and fourth diets named “LCR” and “HCR”, respectively. Basal endogenous losses were determined by feeding a protein-free diet during the 5th week of the experiment. Total endogenous losses were measured by way of the isotopic dilution method using 15N-labeled wheat and rapeseed meal. Decreasing wheat particle size from 1000 to 500 μm improved (P<0.05) the coefficient of ileal digestibility of dietary energy (0.707 versus 0.665), organic matter (0.718 versus 0.677) and dry matter (0.681 versus 0.645), but neither AA CSID nor N retention. The pelleting processes did not further increase (P>0.10) energy or organic matter digestibility but improved (P<0.05) N and AA CSID (0.785 versus 0.759 for N and 0.725 versus 0.679 for lysine, with HCR versus fine diet, respectively). Pelleting wheat flour at higher compression ratio (HCR versus LCR diet) was more efficient to improve dietary N and AA digestibility values due to a significant decrease in ileal specific, i.e., total minus basal, N and AA endogenous losses (P<0.05) associated with an increase in CTID. It is concluded that pelleting wheat fine flour at high compression ratio allows maximizing AA digestibility and availability of a wheat–rapeseed meal diet.  相似文献

The fossil evidence of the “robust” australopithecines is reviewed with an emphasis on the taxonomic divisions and evolutionary relationships among this group of hominids. The hypodigms of A. robustus, A. crassidens and A. boisei are described, and the significance of morphological variation within and between these species is assessed. Phylogenetic relationships among the “robust” australopithecines are examined using maximum parsimony analysis, and evolutionary scenarios are evaluated in the light of recent discoveries in East Africa.  相似文献
