The genetic structure of two African-Ecuadorian communities, Rio Cayapas and Viche (Esmeraldas province, northwest Ecuador), was studied on the basis of ACP1, ADA, AK1, CA2, ESD, GLO1, G6PD, PGD, and PGM1 subtypes and thermostability, PGM2, HBβ, F13A, F13B, ORM1, AHSG, C6, C7, and APOC2 gene frequency, and migration data on 255 individuals. The fixation index of Wright (FST), correspondence, and genetic distance analysis were applied to compare the genetic relationships between these communities and other American populations of African ancestry. FST values from the migration data and surname origins suggest that Rio Cayapas is genetically more isolated and shows less mobility and admixture than does Viche. The genetic admixture estimates indicate a large contribution of African genes to the gene pool of both communities (74.3% to 58.4%), whereas the proportion of the Amerindian component differs significantly (14.5% in Rio Cayapas to 27.6% in Viche). Protein polymorphisms of the crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis) on the island of Mauritius in the southwest Indian Ocean were examined electrophoretically for 201 blood samples. All of the variant types detected were those found previously in the Asian populations. Genetic variability of the island population was estimated to be Ppoly = 16% and H = 6.5%, which was lower than that of the Asian populations. A tendency that a small number of loci were highly polymorphic was observed. These results may reflect the establishment of the island population from a small number of introduced ancestors, or the existence of the bottleneck effect. For the origin of the Mauritian monkeys, comparison of electrophoretic variants suggested that they originated from the Malay Peninsula or the Greater Sunda Islands, especially from Java. Though the homozygous individuals exceeded in number as a whole, a significant subdivision was not detected in the population. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The human populations of the Brazilian Amazon were formed by interethnic crosses between Europeans, Africans, and Amerindians. The relative contribution of men and women of different ethnic groups was not homogeneous, since the social policies of the first three centuries of Brazilian colonization encouraged mating between European men and indigenous women and, later on, African women. In order to test this model based on historical data, we compared the relative contribution of the Y-DNA and mtDNA of Amerindian and non-Amerindian populations to the formation of the urban population of the town of Belém, in the Amazon region, on the basis of a C→T mutation at locus DYS199 present in 90% of the Amerindian Y-DNA and of five markers that define 99% of the mitochondrial sequences of Amerindians. The contribution of indigenous men to the formation of this population was less than 5%, whereas the contribution of indigenous women was estimated at more than 50% of the mitochondrial sequences of the same population. Thus, the present results demonstrate that the contribution of indigenous women to the formation of the Belém population was 10 times higher than the contribution of indigenous men, a genetic consequence of social behavior and attitudes of the past; our results also help clarify the process of integration of indigenous communities into the urban societies in Brazil and possibly in other countries. The purpose of this study was to attempt to find related variables of the canine genome with behavioural traits of dogs maintained and tested in a guide dog facility which provided a relatively uniform environment. The study involved 81 Labrador Retrievers that were being trained as guide dogs. Each dog was taken on walk-out sessions in which the trainer weekly recorded observations that were related to behavioural traits. The records were subjected to key-word analysis of 14 behaviour-related words. A factor analysis on the appearance rate of the 14 key words or phrases resulted in the extraction of six factors that accounted for 67.4% of the variance. Factor 1, referred to as aggressiveness, was significantly related to the success or failure of the dog in qualifying as a guide dog, and was also related to the variable of litter identification. Factor 2, referred to as distraction, was related to the variable of trainer. Factor 3, activity level, was related to the variable of sex, and was significantly related to the polymorphisms of c.471T>C in the solute carrier family 1 ( neuronal/epithelial high affinity glutamate transporter ) member 2 gene and c.216G>A in the catechol-O-methyltransferase gene. The involvement of polymorphisms c.471T>C and c.216G>A in behavioural patterns related to activity level is similar to comparable genetic studies in other mammalian species. These results contribute to a greater understanding of the role of these genes in behaviour.  相似文献

To investigate the population genetics of short tandem repeat (STR) polymorphisms in human populations, we have studied the allele frequency distributions of four STR loci (HUMTH01, HUMVWA31, HUMF13A1 and HUMFES) in 16 different population surveys which can be categorised within three broadly defined ethnic groups: Caucasian, Asian (Indian subcontinent), and African (Afro-Caribbean and US black). We have observed that allele frequency distributions of populations within ethnic groups are similar; consequently, genetic distances are an order of magnitude lower than between ethnic groups. Inbreeding coefficients (F-statistics) and calculations of the number of mean heterozygous loci per individual, along with estimates of variance, did not suggest that the populations were substructured. This included a study of an immigrant Asian population known to comprise at least three different sub-groups. Finally, an indication of the discriminating power is given by calculation of likelihood ratios (LR) of each individual tested across all four loci. Approximately 70% of Caucasians give an LR of greater than 10,000; the test is even more discriminating in Afro-Caribbeans-approximately 90% of tests are greater than 10,000.Editor's commentsThe authors present data generated by the move from VNTR to STR loci for human identification. The data they present for samples within major racial groupings address some of the concerns about population substructuring discussed by Balding and Nichols in this volume.  相似文献

To investigate the population structure and genetic diversity of Henan indigenous pig breeds, samples from a total of 78 pigs of 11 breeds were collected, including four pig populations from Henan Province, three Western commercial breeds, three Chinese native pig breeds from other provinces and one Asian wild boar. The genotyping datasets were obtained by genotyping‐by‐sequencing technology. We found a high degree of polymorphism and rapid linkage disequilibrium decay in Henan pigs. A neighbor‐joining tree, principal component analysis and structure analysis revealed that the Huainan and Erhualian pigs were clustered together and that the Queshan black pigs were clearly grouped together but that the Nanyang and Yuxi pigs were extensively admixed with Western pigs. In addition, heterozygosity values might indicate that Henan indigenous pigs, especially the Queshan black and Huainan pigs, were subjected to little selection during domestication. The results presented here indicate that Henan pig breeds were admixed from Western breeds, especially Nanyang and Yuxi pigs. Therefore, establishment of purification and rejuvenation systems to implement conservation strategies is urgent. In addition, it is also necessary to accelerate genetic resources improvement and utilization using modern breeding technologies, such as genomic selection and genome‐wide association studies.  相似文献

In the present study, we show how, through time, an ethnic mosaic and a changing social and economic context translated into intrapopulation differentiation and a change in genetic barriers between populations. Surname analysis was applied to a sample drawn from two centuries of marriage records in ten Arbëreshe and nine Italian villages of southern Italy to evaluate the evolution of internal differentiation and changes in genetic relationships between populations. Marital Isonymy and subdivision into subpopulations was higher in the Arbëreshe. Genetic barriers coinciding with ethnic boundaries characterized the 1800s. In the second half of the 1900s, ethnic differentiation disappeared. We hypothesize that socioeconomic changes, such as increased outmigration and regional mobility, were the forces that progressively eliminated the ethnic-related genetic differentiation in the region. This study has important implications for an understanding of the relationship between genetic evolution and the cultural milieu involving enforcement of ethnic differences.  相似文献

We propose the hypothesis that individual longitudinal trajectories of fertility are closely coupled to varying survival schedules across geographically isolated populations of the same species, in such a way that peak reproduction takes place before substantial increases in mortality are observed. This reproductive adaptation hypothesis is investigated for medflies through a statistical analysis of biodemographic data that were obtained for female medflies from six geographically far apart regions. The following results support the hypothesis: (i) both survival and reproductive schedules differ substantially between these populations, where early peaks and subsequently fast declining reproduction are observed for short-lived and protracted reproductive schedules for long-lived flies; (ii) when statistically adjusting reproduction for the observed differences in survival, the differences in reproductive schedules largely vanish, and thus the observed differences in fertility across the populations can be explained by differences in population-specific longevity; and (iii) specific survival patterns of the medflies belonging to a specific population predict the individual reproductive schedule for the flies in this population. The analysis is based on innovative statistical tools from functional data analysis. Our findings are consistent with an adaptive mechanism whereby trajectories of fertility evolve in response to specific constraints inherent in the population survival schedules.  相似文献

Abstract

Small and isolated silver fir populations from the Emilian Apennines (northern Italy) were studied to assess their level of genetic variation and their relationship with Alpine populations. We investigated the variability of two chloroplast microsatellites to analyse the within‐population genetic variability of four peripheral and fragmented Apennine populations and to determine their phylogenetic relatedness to seven Alpine populations covering the entire distribution of silver fir in the Alps. Haplotypic richness and haplotype diversity as well as the fraction of private haplotypes were lower in Apennine populations, evidencing the genetic impoverishment of these stands. The among‐population genetic variability analysis revealed the genetic peculiarity of Apennine populations. Analysis of molecular variance showed that the highest level of the among‐population variation occurs between Alpine and Apennine regions. A neighbour‐joining dendrogram revealed a distinct Apennine cluster that included the closest Alpine population. Our genetic analysis supports a common origin for Emilian Apennine populations, suggesting that these populations are relicts of past large silver fir populations in the northern Apennines. Our results point to a relevant conservation value for these stands, to be considered in their management.  相似文献

Present human populations show a complex network of genetic relationships, which reflects mainly their unique origin and their migration and isolation history since the recent creation of modern man. The scrutiny of their genetic characteristics, according to GM polymorphism, shows that the continuity of the genetic variation between populations from neighbouring continents, assured by intermediate world part populations, is against any attempt to divide present human populations into major groups. GM polymorphism analysis also shows three remarkable levels of genetic differentiation, which would have appeared, respectively, within populations of sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and East Asia. The first small groups of people that split from the common ancestral population gave the sub-Saharan Africans. On the other hand, Asians diverged mainly from Europeans and Near East populations during a later period. The confrontation between the phylogeny and the frequency distribution of GM haplotypes shows that the ancestral population of actual South-Arabia people could be a candidate for a common ancestral population. The first major expansions of modern humans were proposed in a hypothetical scenario, which will open a new track in the research of our geographic origin.  相似文献

Data on 20 genetic polymorphisms (61 alleles) in the Algehero population on the northwestern coast of Sardinia are presented and discussed in relation to its linguistic peculiarity inside the island. Since the Aragonese (Spain) conquest of Sardinia in the 13th century, the Catalan language, the same as that spoken in Northeastern Spain and certain districts of Southern France, has been used in Alghero even until today. Analysis for heterogeneity of gene frequency distributions indicates that the genetic information obtained on Alghero is adequate to discriminate Sardinians from other neighbouring populations. Genetic variation between populations measured through genetic distances and principal-component analysis shows that the present-day population of Alghero is much closer genetically to Sardinians than to Catalonians. Our genetic results do not support any interpretation of the linguistic affinities between Alghero and Catalonia at present as indicative of biological kinship. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Drosophila melanogaster populations in nature usually carry inversion polymorphisms. When they were transferred to and maintained in the laboratory as large cage populations, frequencies of polymorphic inversions were drastically decreased and finally eliminated. This “cage effect” was observed irrespective of the geographical origin of the population or the initial frequency of each inversion. The decrease and elimination of inversions in the cage was not overcome by changing conditions such as medium, temperature, or the number of isofemale lines (40-600) introduced. On the other hand, in the sets of isofemale lines derived from the same geographical origins as the cage populations, each of which was maintained as a small vial population, the inversion frequencies, though decreased from the initial frequencies, were kept at significantly high levels. The cage populations initiated with one or two isofemale lines also maintained the inversion polymorphisms that were as high as vial populations.  相似文献

Due to its important effects on the ecological dynamics and the genetic structure of species, biologists have long been interested in gender‐biased dispersal, a condition where one gender is more prone to move from the natal site. More recently, this topic has attracted a great attention from human evolutionary geneticists. Considering the close relations between residential rules and social structure, gender‐biased dispersal is, in fact, regarded as an important case study concerning the effects of socio‐cultural factors on human genetic variation. It all started with the seminal paper by Mark Seielstad, Erich Minch and Luigi Luca Cavalli Sforza from Stanford University (Seielstad et al. 1998). They observed a larger differentiation for Y‐chromosome than mitochondrial DNA between extant human populations, purportedly a consequence of the prevalence of long‐term patrilocality in human societies. Subsequent studies, however, have highlighted the need to consider geographically close and culturally homogeneous groups, disentangle signals due to different peopling events and obtain unbiased estimates of genetic diversity. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, not only do Marks et al. (2012) adopt an experimental design which addresses these concerns, but they also take a further and important step forward by integrating the genetic analysis of two distant populations, the Basotho and Spanish, with data regarding migration rates and matrimonial distances. Using both empirical evidence and simulations, the authors show that female‐biased migration due to patrilocality might shape the genetic structure of human populations only at short ranges and under substantial differences in migration rates between genders. Providing a quantitative framework for future studies of the effects of residential rules on the human genome, this study paves the way for further developments in the field. On a wider perspective, Marks et al.'s work demonstrates the power of approaches which integrate biological, cultural and demographic lines of evidence in the study of relations between social and genetic structures of human populations.  相似文献

Data from 142 male and 43 female samples of African populations have been used to analyze the geographical variation of digital dermatoglyphics (arches, loops, whorls, and pattern intensity index) in Africa. The patterns of geographical variation have been summarized as contours of sixth-degree polynomial surfaces by means of trend-surface analysis. As pointed out by early studies, Africa exhibits geographical clines of digital dermatoglyphic patterns. However, only some of the frequency gradients previously described for the region find confirmation in the present study.  相似文献
