We studied the response of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) to supplementary far-red sidelight in seedlings grown in a forest soil substrate without additional nutrient supply. Our aim was to determine possible changes in the accumulation and allocation of dry weight and mineral nutrients and the presence of mycorrhizas. Half of the seedlings were grown in light conditions simulating reflected far-red light (FR) from neighbouring plants and the other half were controls not receiving additional FR. PAR irradiance was kept constant in both treatments. At the first harvest (41 d of treatment), FR+ had no effect on stem height, biomass accumulation or allocation. However, at the end of the experiment (93 d of treatment), an increase in stem extension rate and stem dry weight was observed in FR+ seedlings when compared to controls. Both control and treated plants had several morphological types of ectomycorrhizas, but no effect of FR+ on the frequency of these morphotypes was observed. Nor was the concentration of ergosterol or estimated mycorrhizal fungal biomass affected. Nutrients were more responsive to the light quality treatment: P concentration in roots and N and P contents in stems and roots were higher in FR+ plants than in control seedlings. These results are in contrast to those of a previous study in which the root system of pine seedlings, which were fertilised and had less developed mycorrhizas, was reduced by FR+. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effects of supplementary far-red sidelight on the formation of mycorrhizas and on the accumulation and allocation of dry weight and mineral nutrients were studied in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings. Starting one week after germination the seedlings were subjected to two different light quality regimes: control and simulated sparse-canopy conditions (FR+). In the FR+ regime, light reflected by neighbouring plants was simulated by means of supplementary far-red light sources, which reduced the horizontal red/far-red photon ratio (R:FR) without affecting PAR. Seedlings were harvested after three months of treatment. FR+ increased stem height and decreased the total dry weight of seedlings. Dry weight allocation to needles was not affected, whereas dry weight allocation to roots was reduced and that to stems was increased in FR+ treated seedlings. The total number of short root tips and developing mycorrhizas per seedling were lower in FR+ than in control plants. Most short roots were developing mycorrhizas, while non-mycorrhizal short roots and mycorrhizas with mantle or external mycelium were very scarce. Changes in the allocation of nutrients in general followed the changes in dry weight allocation, and changes in nutrient content followed those in total dry weight. However, mismatches among these changes resulted in significant changes in nutrient concentrations in some organs: the concentrations of nitrogen and potassium in needles and the concentration of nitrogen in stems were higher in FR+ than in control seedlings. Changes in biomass and nutrient allocation under low R:FR may promote rapid height growth during early development in stands of Scots pine seedlings, but concomitant reductions in growth of the root system and mycorrhizas may negatively affect tree performance over the long term.  相似文献

The natural variation in quantity and quality of light modifies plant morphology, growth rate and concentration of biochemicals. The aim of two growth‐room experiments was to study the combined effects of red (R) and far‐red (FR) light and ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B) radiation on the concentrations of leaf phenolics and growth and morphology of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) seedlings. Analysis by high‐performance liquid chromatography showed that the leaves exposed to supplemental FR relative to R contained higher concentrations of total chlorogenic acids and a cinnamic acid derivative than the leaves treated with supplemental R relative to FR. In contrast, concentration of a flavonoid, quercetin 3‐galactoside, was higher in the R + UV‐B leaves than in the FR + UV‐B leaves. The UV‐B induced production of kaempferols, chlorogenic acids and most quercetins were not modified by the R : FR ratio. Growth measurements showed that the leaf petioles and stems of FR seedlings were clearly longer than those of R seedlings, but leaf area was reduced by UV‐B radiation. Results of these experiments show that exposure of silver birch seedlings to supplemental FR compared to R leads to fast elongation growth and accumulation of phenolic acids in the leaves.  相似文献

Light with decreased red:far-red (R:FR) ratios may signal neighbor presence and trigger plant developmental responses. There is some evidence that plant canopies forage towards increased R:FR ratios, but it is unclear to what extent R:FR versus the total amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) influences canopy foraging responses among forest trees. The objective of this study was to examine the relative importance of PAR and R:FR as photosensory cues leading to tree canopy foraging responses. Seedlings of Betula papyrifera Marshall (paper birch) were grown in an experimental garden. Each seedling was germinated and grown in its own shading structure and exposed to two spatially separated light environments, in a factorial design of PAR and R:FR. Plant canopy foraging was evaluated at the end of one growing season in terms of canopy displacement, canopy area, leaf number, direction of stem lean, petiole aspect, and lamina aspect with respect to experimental light treatments. Leaf number and canopy area were greater on the high PAR sides of plants, irrespective of the R:FR treatment. Seedling canopies were displaced towards the direction of high PAR, but this relationship was not significant across all treatments. Petiole aspect was random and showed no significant directedness towards any of the light treatments. Lamina aspect and the direction of stem lean were distributed towards the direction of high PAR, irrespective of the R:FR treatment. Overall, first-year B. papyrifera seedlings used PAR, rather than R:FR ratio, as a photosensory cue for canopy light foraging.  相似文献

A Definition of Optimum Nutrient Requirements in Birch Seedlings. II   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
The aim of the experiments described was to specify further the nutrient requirements of birch seedlings. A growth method is described in which the nutrients consumed at maximum growth of birch seedlings can be replaced, without change of the nutrient solution, by means of additions made as pH and conductivity titrations so that three conditions are satisfied: 1) All necessary mineral nutrients are present in the plant in optimum proportions. 2) The nitrogen sources NH4+ and NO3- are present in the nutrient solution in an optimum ratio. 3) Total concentration in the solution is optimum. The three conditions may be regarded as criteria in a definition of nutrient requirements. The possible use of criterion 1 as an expression of the optimum nutrient status is also discussed. A considerable increase in light intensity had no significant effect on the optimum nutrient proportions or the optimum total concentration. A tendency to lower ammonium uptake in relation to nitrate was induced when both nitrogen sources were present. Simple stock nutrient solution systems are listed and discussed.  相似文献

The effects of increased ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B) radiation on the growth, mycorrhizas and mineral nutrition of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) seedlings were studied in greenhouse conditions. Seedlings—planted in a birch‐forest top soil and sand substrate—were grown without additional nutrient supply. Ultraviolet treatment started immediately after the seedlings emerged and the daily integrated biologically effective UV‐B irradiance on the UV‐B‐treated plants was equivalent to a 25% depletion of stratospheric ozone under clear sky conditions. Visible symptoms of UV‐B damage or nutrient deficiency were not observed throughout the experiment. Seedling height and dry weight (DW) (measured after 58 days and 76 days of treatment) were not affected by increased UV‐B. However, a significant shift in DW allocation toward roots resulted in a lower shoot/root ratio and leaf area ratio in UV‐B‐treated plants compared to control plants. At the first harvest (after 58 days of treatment), the percentage of various mycorrhizal morphotypes and the number of short roots per unit of root length or weight were not affected by increased UV‐B despite significantly increased DW allocation toward roots. Subtle reduction in the allocation of nitrogen (N) to leaves and increased allocation of phosphorus (P) to roots may suggest cumulative effects that could affect the plant performance over the long‐term.  相似文献

It has been demonstrated that far-red light reduces growth of marine phytoplankton and that light quality controls growth and photosynthetic metabolism in algae. The green halotolerant microalga, Dunaliella bardawil, accumulates high amounts of β-carotene (up to 10% of its dry weight) under conditions of high light or nutrient limitation. The influence of increasing irradiance and of far-red light in D. bardawil was studied. Continuous irradiance was provided by white fluorescent lamps alone (WL) or supplemented with far-red Linestra lamps (WL+FR). For both types of light, cultures were acclimatized at increasing irradiances (50-300 µmol m?2 s?1), and cell density, photosynthetic activity and pigment content were determined. Cell density increased with the photon irradiance, and was higher in WL than in WL+FR under the same irradiance, but the reverse occurred in respect of cell volume. Growth rate was higher under WL+FR. Far-red light induced faster growth but reduced the maximal cell density of the cultures. Chlorophyll a concentration was higher in white light, but total carotenoid content increased dramatically in both far-red light treatments (about 50% on a per cell basis) and with the increase of irradiance. Our results show that far-red light has a significant influence on growth and photosynthesis of D. bardawil, inducing a decrease in cell density, photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll concentration, and an increase in growth rate, cell volume and carotenoid content.  相似文献

Young leaves of white clover are subjected to low irradiance and low red to far-red (R:FR) ratio within canopies. The objectives were to investigate the consequences of low R:FR ratio on morphology, net CO2 assimilation and photochemical activity of leaves developed under simulated light environment of canopy. We used far-red (FR) light emitting diodes to modify the R:FR ratio only at the developing leaf under a low irradiance. Net CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal conductance and leaf morphology were not affected by low R:FR ratio. FR exposure slightly reduced the photochemical quantum yield of PSII but there were no consequences on electron flow through photosystem II. The carbon fixation by the leaf was therefore not modified by light quality. However, low R:FR ratio decreased the leaf chlorophyll content by 21 %. Those effects were only attributed to just unfolded leaves as they were not persistent in mature leaves and there were no consequences on plant biomass accumulation.  相似文献

The effects of blue light (B) on stem extension-growth were compared in light-grown seedlings, of tobacco overexpressing Avena phytochrome A and its isogenic wild type (WT). Under natural radiation, lowering the levels of B reaching the whole shoot promoted stem extension growth in WT but not in transgenic seedlings. Under controlled conditions, the seedlings were exposed to white light (WL) or WL minus B, each one provided at two different irradiances. In WT seedlings stem extension growth was promoted by lowering B at both irradiance levels. In transgenic seedlings a reduction of B was promotive only at low irradiance levels. The seedlings were also grown under WL, WL minus B, WL minus red light (R) and far-red light (FR) or WL minus R, FR and B. In the WT, lowering B promoted stem extension growth irrespective of R+FR levels. In the transgenics, B was effective only at very low levels of R+FR (i.e. at low phytochrome cycling rates). Lowering the Pfr levels at the end of the day promoted extension growth in wild type and transgenic seedlings. Responses to B were not observed in transgenic seedlings having low Pfr levels at the end of the day. The results suggest that the overexpressed phytochrome A acts mainly via irradiance-dependent reactions. When these reactions are highly expressed, B responses are not observed.  相似文献

In etiolated seedlings of Raphanus sativus L. the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation by continuous light showed a major bimodal peak of action in the red and far-red, and two minor peaks in the blue regions of the spectrum. It is argued that, under conditions of prolonged irradiation, phytochrome is the pigment controlling the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation by red and far-red light, but that its mode of action in far-red is different from that in red. A distinct pigment is postulated for blue light.Abbreviations B blue - FR far red - G green - R red - HIR high irradiance reaction - Pr and Pfr red and far red absorbing forms of phytochrome - R red  相似文献

Mineral Nutrient Requirements of Vaccinium vitis idaea and V. myrtillus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The mineral nutrient requirements of Vaccinium vitis idaea L. and V. myrtillus L. have been studied. It is found that the optimum nutrient proportions are similar to those of birch seedlings except for a relatively low potassium requirement. The nitrogen sources ammonium and nitrate are both usable at low concentrations. A system with both sources present seems preferable. The ammonium uptake is then much more rapid than the nitrate uptake. The optimum total concentration falls within the low salt range and is about the same as found for birch seedlings, but the sensitivity to high salt concentrations is more pronounced in the Vaccinium species. A very marked characteristic of the nutrient absorption is the rapid calcium uptake. The results are discussed in relation to similar experiments with birch and cucumber seedlings, representing species with a wide or calcareous ecological adaptation.  相似文献

De-etiolation results in phytochrome destruction, greening, and the loss of the far-red high irradiance responses (HIR). Evidence is presented against the hypothesis that the loss of the far-red HIR is a direct consequence of phytochrome destruction. Loss of the far-red HIR for the inhibition of elongation in hypocotyls of Raphanus sativus involves two different, but linked, actions of phytochrome. An induction reaction requires the far-red absorbing form of phytochrome for about 20 min after which accumulation of its product depends only on time. A second reaction requires continuous light or frequent short irradiations and involves cycling of the phytochrome system. This acts on the product of the induction reaction. It is proposed that in green plants an important mode of operation of phytochrome in the light depends on pigment cycling, and that during de-etiolation this system is established under phytochrome control.Abbreviations HIR high irradiance response - R red - FR farred light - Ptot phytochrome, Pr its red absorbing form, Pfr its far-red absorbing form A.M. Internode extension-growth responses to neighbouring plants and to red to far-red ratios (R:FR) were investigated in wild-type (WT) and aurea (au)-mutant seedlings of tomato grown under natural radiation. The genomic location of the au mutant is not known, but one of its consequences is the reduced phytochrome level. In WT seedlings, internode growth was promoted by the presence of non-shading neighbours reflecting far-red light (FR), the shade of a tall canopy, FR provided as a supplement during the photoperiod, and FR pulses either provided at the end of the day or delayed into the dark period. Supplementary FR during the photoperiod also promoted growth in herbicide-treated partially bleached WT seedlings. The au mutant showed higher background extension-growth rates, but only responded to the most severe treatments: deep shade light and very low R:FR at the end of the day, i.e. au-mutant seedlings were less sensitive than WT seedlings to R:FR signals. Wild-type seedlings were transferred from the glasshouse to a growth room and exposed to white light with two levels of phytochrome-absorbable radiation but similar phytochrome photoequilibria and radiation for photosynthesis. The plants exposed to the lowest level showed a transient increase of internode extension growth rate and a simultaneous reduction of response to FR pulses, i.e. reproduced some of the features of au-mutant seedlings. Phytochrome itself could set the degree of response to Pfr during neighbour detection.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to estimate the optimum nutrient requirements and responses to low relative nutrient addition rates of seedlings of two important broadleaf tree species in China, Populus simonii Carr. and Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud. In preliminary experiments the optimum nutrient proportions were estimated under high concentration conditions. The nutrients consumed were replaced by means of daily additions determined by pH and conductivity titrations without changing the nutrient solutions. A relatively high K level was needed in relation to nitrogen; higher than in birch or grey alder seedlings. To obtain a high relative growth rate, suitable proportions by weight were 100 N:70 K:14 P:7 Ca:7 Mg for the Populus seedlings and 100 N:75 K:20 P:8 Ca:9 Mg for the Paulownia seedlings.
In studies of nutrient stress responses the relative nutrient addition rate was used as the treatment variable under low conductivity conditions. The responses and relationships were similar to those described for birch, grey alder and Salix . The relative addition rate, and there was also a strong linear regression between relative growth rate and nitrogen status. Relative growth rates were high and the maximum weight increase was about 19% day−1 in Populus and over 25% day−1 in Paulownia . The nitrogen productivity of Paulownia was very high, 0.26 g dry weight (g N)−1 h−1, and for Populus it was 0.16 g dry weight (g N)−1 h−1.  相似文献

A comparison of the photoregulation of development has been made for etiolated and light-grown plants of wild-type (WT) tobacco (Nicotiana tabacun L.) and an isogenic transgenic line which expresses an introduced oat phytochrome gene (phyA) under the control of a constitutive viral promoter. Etiolated seedlings of both the WT and transgenic line showed irradiance-dependent inhibition of hypocotyl growth under continuous far-red (FR) light; transgenic seedlings showed a greater level of inhibition under a given fluence rate and this is considered to be the result of the heterologous phytochrome protein (PhyA) functioning in a compatible manner with the native etiolated phytochrome. Deetiolation of WT seedlings resulted in a loss of responsiveness to prolonged FR. Light-grown transgenic seedlings, however, continued to respond in an irradiance-dependent manner to prolonged FR and it is proposed that this is a specific function of the constitutive PhyA. Mature green plants of the WT and transgenic lines showed a qualitatively similar growth promotion to a brief end-of-day FR-treatment but this response was abolished in the transgenic plants under prolonged irradiation by this same FR source. Growth inhibition (McCormac et al. 1991, Planta 185, 162–170) and enhanced levels of nitrate-reductase activity under irradiance of low red:far-red ratio, as achieved by the FR-supplementation of white light, emphasised that the introduced PhyA was eliciting an aberrant mode of photoresponse compared with the normal phytochrome population of light-grown plants. Total levels of the oat-encoded phytochrome in the etiolated transgenic tobacco were shown to be influenced by the wavelength of continuous irradiation in a manner which was qualitatively similar to that seen for the native, etiolated tobacco phytochrome, and distinct from that seen in etiolated oat tissues. These results are discussed in terms of the proposal that the constitutive oat-PhyA pool in the transgenic plants leads to a persistence of a mode of response normally restricted to the situation in etiolated plants.Abbreviations FR far-red light - R red light - WL white light - WL + FR white light supplemented with FR - HIR high-irradiance response - PAR photosynthetically active radiation - Pr, Pfr R- and FR-absorbing forms of phytochrome - Ptot total phytochrome - phyA (PhyA) gene (encoded protein) for phytochrome - WT wild type This work was supported by an Agricultural and Food Research Council research grant to H.S. and A.M.; J.R. Plants perceive red (R) and far-red (FR) light signals using the phytochrome family of photoreceptors. In Arabidopsis thaliana, five phytochromes (phyA-phyE) have been identified and characterized. Unlike other family members, phyA is subject to rapid light-induced proteolytic degradation and so accumulates to relatively high levels in dark-grown seedlings. The insensitivity of phyA mutant seedlings to prolonged FR and wild-type appearance in R has led to suggestions that phyA functions predominantly as an FR sensor during the early stages of seedling establishment. The majority of published photomorphogenesis experiments have, however, used <50 micromol m(-2) sec(-1) of R when characterizing phytochrome functions. Here we reveal considerable phyA activity in R at higher (>160 micromol m(-2) sec(-1)) photon irradiances. Under these conditions, plant architecture was observed to be largely regulated by the redundant actions of phytochromes A, B and D. Moreover, quadruple phyBphyCphyDphyE mutants containing only functional phyA displayed R-mediated de-etiolation and survived to flowering. The enhanced activity of phyA in continuous R (Rc) of high photon irradiance correlates with retarded degradation of the endogenous protein in wild-type plants and prolonged epifluorescence of nuclear-localized phyA:YFP in transgenic lines. Such observations suggest irradiance-dependent 'photoprotection' of nuclear phyA in R, providing a possible explanation for the increased activity observed. The discovery that phyA can function as an effective irradiance sensor, even in light environments that establish a high Pfr concentration, raises the possibility that phyA may contribute significantly to the regulation of growth and development in daylight-grown plants.  相似文献

Plants sense the presence of neighbouring vegetation through phytochrome photoreceptors perceiving a lowered red to far-red ratio (R:FR) of light reflected from such vegetation. We hypothesised that it would be advantageous for the grassland clonal herb, Trifolium repens, to have an inhibitory branching response to perception by leaves of light reflected from neighbouring vegetation (i.e. light with lowered R:FR ratio) but have no response to interception of such light by the plagiotropic stem. We tested whether photoreception of reflected light by plagiotropic stems resulted in a different branching response to photoreception by leaves and whether leaf ontogeny influenced the response. To simulate light reflected from vegetation, FR light-emitting-diodes were used to supplement controlled environment room light so that the R:FR ratio, but not the photosynthetic photon fluence rate, of light incident at the stem or leaf of a phytomer of T. repens was lowered from 1.20 to 0.25. The plagiotropic stems were unresponsive to light simulating that reflected from vegetation. This response differs from that of stems of orthotropic species, indicating that plagiotropic stems have evolved an organ-specific photobiology. Treatment of the mature leaf with light of lowered FR ratio reduced phytomer production only of the branch in the axil of the treated leaf. Similar treatment of the immature leaf retarded, in addition, branching at basal phytomers on the same side of the primary stem axis. Thus the response to light simulating that reflected from neighbouring vegetation depended upon whether the light was incident at the stem or the leaf and on the stage of leaf development. We argue that such responses improve the performance and fitness of T. repens within grassland habitats by allowing axillary buds on plagiotropic stems to branch freely when stems are in receipt of light reflected from vegetation while leaves are in full light.  相似文献

Effects of red light (R), far-red light (FR) and UV radiation on growth and greening of lettuce seedlings (Latuca sativa L., cv. Berlinskii) have been investigated. UV-B and UV-C inhibited hypocotyl elongation and stimulated cotyledonary growth. R in combination with UV-B and UV-C partly eliminated these effects, but FR increased those and reversed the R effect. Chlorophyll accumulation was inhibited by UV-B and UV-C. In comparison with cotyledonary growth, R strengthened the UV inhibitory effect, and FR reversed this effect of R. Thus, UV and phytochrome system modify the effects of each other on hypocotyl and leaf growth in lettuce seedlings depending on the level of active phytochrome formed.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to uncouple the effects of the two primary components of shade light, a reduced red to far-red (R/FR) ratio and low photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), on the elongation of the youngest internode of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seedlings. Maximal internode growth (length and biomass) was induced by a shade light having a reduced R/FR ratio (0.85) under the low PAR of 157 micromol m(-2) s(-1). Reducing the R/FR ratio under normal PAR (421 micromol m(-2) s(-1)) gave similar growth trends, albeit with a reduced magnitude of the response. Leaf area growth showed a rather different pattern, with maximal growth occurring at the higher (normal) PAR of 421 micromol m(-2) s(-1)), but with variable effects being seen with changes in light quality. Reducing the R/FR ratio (by enrichment with FR) gave significant increases in gibberellin A(1) (GA(1)) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) contents in both internodes and leaves. By contrast, a lower PAR irradiance had no significant effect on GA(1) and IAA levels in internodes or leaves, but did increase the levels of other GAs, including two precursors of GA(1). Interestingly, both leaf and internode hormone content (GAs, IAA) are positively and significantly correlated with growth of the internode, as are leaf levels of abscisic acid (ABA). However, changes in these three hormones bear little relationship to leaf growth. By implication, then, the leaf may be the major source of GAs and IAA, at least, for the rapidly elongating internode. Several other hormones were also assessed in leaves for plants grown under varying R/FR ratios and PARs. Leaf ethylene production was not influenced by changes in R/FR ratio, but was significantly reduced under the normal (higher) PAR, the irradiance treatment which increased leaf growth. Levels of the growth-active free base and riboside cytokinins were significantly increased in leaves under a reduced R/FR ratio, but only at the higher (normal) PAR irradiance; other light quality treatments evoked no significant changes. Taken in toto, these results indicate that both components of shade light can influence the levels of a wide range of endogenous hormones in internodes and leaves while evoking increased internode elongation and biomass accumulation. However, it is light quality changes (FR enrichment) which are most closely tied to increased hormone content, and especially with increased GA and IAA levels. Finally, the increases seen in internode and leaf GA content with a reduced R/FR ratio are consistent with FR enrichment inducing an overall increase in sunflower seedling GA biosynthesis.  相似文献

Seedlings of trees with a free growth pattern cease growth when night-lengths become shorter than a critical value, and this critical night-length (CNL) decreases with increasing latitude of origin. In northern populations, the light quality also appears to play an important role and a clinal variation in requirement for far-red (FR) light has been documented. In this study we dissected the light quality requirements for maintaining growth in different latitudinal populations of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) using light emitting diodes for red (R), FR and blue (B) light, as 12 h day extension to provide 24 h photoperiod. At equal spectral photon flux, FR light was more effective than R light in maintaining growth, and the requirement of both R and FR increased with northern latitude of origin. One-to-one mixtures of R and FR light were more effective in maintaining growth than either FR or R light alone, indicating a possible interaction between R and FR light maintaining growth. Using the blue light as day extension could not prevent growth cessation in any of the populations, but delayed the bud set slightly in all populations. Our results suggest that phytochrome(s) are the primary photoreceptors in high irradiance responses maintaining growth in Norway spruce seedlings.  相似文献
