FGF signaling in the invertebrate model systems Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans was initially most obviously involved in cell motility events. More recently, however, FGFs and FGF signaling in these systems have been shown to affect many additional cellular processes. This recent work has shown that the pleiotropies of these FGF receptors resemble those of their vertebrate counterparts, and, in many cases, serve as excellent models for understanding the fundamental molecular mechanisms controlling these events.  相似文献

Considerable attention has been paid to the topic of autophagy induction. In part, this is because of the potential for modulating this process for therapeutic purposes. Of course we know that induced autophagy can also be problematic—for example, when trying to eliminate an established tumor that might be relying on autophagy for its own cytoprotective uses. Accordingly, inhibitory mechanisms have been considered; however, the corresponding studies have tended to focus on the pathways that block autophagy under noninducing conditions, such as when nutrients are available. In contrast, relatively little is known about the mechanisms for inhibiting autophagy under inducing conditions. Yet, this type of regulation must be occurring on a routine basis. We know that dysregulation of autophagy, e.g., due to improper activation of Beclin 1 leading to excessive autophagy activity, can cause cell death.1 Pattingre S, Tassa A, Qu X, Garuti R, Liang XH, Mizushima N, et al. Human population growth has increased demand for food products, which is expected to double in coming decades. Until recently, this demand has been met by expanding agricultural area and intensifying agrochemical-based monoculture of a few species. However, this development pathway has been criticised due to its negative impacts on the environment and other human activities. Therefore, new production practices are needed to meet human food requirements sustainably in the future. Herein, we assert that polyculture practices can ensure the transition of aquaculture towards sustainable development. We review traditional and recent polyculture practices (ponds, recirculated aquaculture systems, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, aquaponics, integrated agriculture–aquaculture) to highlight how they improve aquaculture through the coexistence and interactions of species. This overview highlights the importance of species compatibility (i.e. species that can live in the same farming environment without detrimental interactions) and complementarity (i.e. complementary use of available resources and/or commensalism/mutualism) to achieve efficient and ethical aquaculture. Overall, polyculture combines aspects of productivity, environmental protection, resource sharing, and animal welfare. However, several challenges must be addressed to facilitate polyculture development across the world. We developed a four-step conceptual framework for designing innovative polyculture systems. This framework highlights the importance of (i) using prospective approaches to consider which species to combine, (ii) performing integrated assessment of rearing environments to determine in which farming system a particular combination of species is the most relevant, (iii) developing new tools and strategies to facilitate polyculture system management, and (iv) implementing polyculture innovation for relevant stakeholders involved in aquaculture transitions.  相似文献

Iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we examined neuronal and glial cells to clarify which contributes most to metal accumulation after internalization through the transferrin-independent iron uptake (Tf-IU) systems in primary neuronal and glial predominant (NP and GP) cells from rat cerebral cortex, which affect the accumulation of transition metals in a variety of cultured cells. Al more significantly upregulated the Tf-IU activity in GP cells than in NP cells. GP cells were more resistant to Fe and Al exposure than NP cells. However, a chemiluminescence analysis specific for reactive oxygen species (ROS) showed that ROS levels in Fe- or Al-loaded NP cells were twice as high as in Fe- or Al-loaded GP cells. Northern blot analysis and gel retardation assay showed that the Al and Fe exposure taken up by the cells suppress Tf receptor mRNA expression to a greater extent in GP than NP cells, indicating that Al and Fe more markedly accumulate in glial than in neuronal cells. These results suggest that glial cells rather than neuronal cells contribute to the metal accumulation and are more resistant to oxidative stress caused by metals than neuronal cells. The present study may help to explain the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration in AD disorders caused by metal-generated oxidative stress.  相似文献
