Despite increasing evidence that marine predators associate with mesoscale eddies, how these marine features influence foraging movements is still unclear. This study investigates the relationship of at-sea movements of king penguins to mesoscale eddies using oceanographic remote sensing and movement data from 43 individual trips over 4 years. Simultaneous satellite measurements provided information on gradients of sea surface temperature and currents associated with eddies determined from altimetry. Penguins tended to swim rapidly with currents as they travelled towards foraging zones. Swimming speed indicative of foraging occurred within mesoscale fronts and strong currents associated with eddies at the Polar Front. These results demonstrate the importance of mesoscale eddies in directing foraging efforts to allow predators to rapidly get to rich areas where high concentrations of prey are likely to be encountered. When returning to the colony to relieve the incubating partner or to feed the chick, the birds followed a direct and rapid path, seemingly ignoring currents.  相似文献

Bioluminescence intensity acts as the indicator of the functional state of a plankton community. Data on bioluminescence intensity, zooplankton biomass, and chlorophyll a from the expeditions to the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean were analyzed. The regression models implied a ~10-fold decline of bioluminescence intensity [bioluminescence potential (BP)] and zooplankton biomass for the 46 year time range from 1970 to 2016. The correlation was low between chlorophyll a (the indicator of phytoplankton biomass) and BP, but it was significant for the zooplankton biomass BP annual time series. The decline of BP was associated with the decreasing abundance of bioluminescent zooplankton, and increasing global warming-driven temperature.  相似文献

Like most benthic marine organisms, coral reef fishes produce larvae that traverse open ocean waters before settling and metamorphosing into juveniles. Where larvae are transported and how they survive is a central question in marine and fisheries ecology. While there is increasing success in modelling potential larval trajectories, our knowledge of the physical and biological processes contributing to larval survivorship during dispersal remains relatively poor. Mesoscale eddies (MEs) are ubiquitous throughout the world''s oceans and their propagation is often accompanied by upwelling and increased productivity. Enhanced production suggests that eddies may serve as important habitat for the larval stages of marine organisms, yet there is a lack of empirical data on the growth rates of larvae associated with these eddies. During three cruises in the Straits of Florida, we sampled larval fishes inside and outside five cyclonic MEs. Otolith microstructure analysis revealed that four of five species of reef fish examined had consistently faster growth inside these eddies. Because increased larval growth often leads to higher survivorship, larvae that encounter MEs during transit are more likely to contribute to reef populations. Successful dispersal in oligotrophic waters may rely on larval encounter with such oceanographic features.  相似文献

Under adjusted experimental conditions, open-to-air cultures of lux gene-engineered Ralstonia eutropha (wholecell biosensors of copper) exhibit bioconvection, which accounts for fluctuating bioluminescence. The power spectrum of bioluminescence intensity fluctuations recorded from a cylindrical sample 9 mm in diameter and approximately 10 mm in height is characterized by a dominant low-frequency oscillation (with a characteristic period of approximately 8-12 min), which is occasionally accompanied by a few weaker oscillations. The corresponding spectral peaks emerge on a high-noise background. The spectra of bioluminescence intensity fluctuations qualitatively resemble the spectra of temperature or fluid velocity fluctuations in an appropriate turbulent thermal convection system. It has been suggested that in a bioconvective system, like in thermal convection systems, the emergence of oscillation reflects the large-scale convective circulation that spans the height of the cylindrical cell. The velocity of large-scale bioconvective circulation was estimated to be 37-48 microm/s. The occasional emergence of weaker-than-dominant oscillations was explained through the coexistence and interaction of the large-scale circulation with, presumably, a gene-expression-related cyclic process (with a characteristic period of approximately 25-50 min).  相似文献

The Ca(2+)-regulated photoprotein obelin has been examined as a label for bioluminescence immunoassay of infective agents. The hepatitis B virus (HbsAg) and the bacteria Escherichia coli and Shigella sonnei lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were chosen as model antigens. Chemically synthesized obelin-corresponding antibody conjugates were used in a solid-phase microplate immunoassay. The sensitivities achieved by the assay were 0.25 ng/mL for S. sonnei LPS and 0.375 ng/mL for HbsAg. A novel, filter-based immunoassay to determine bacterial admixtures in the environment was proposed. The NanoCeram filters were effectively applied to 'trap' and pre-concentrate pathogens from samples under study for the purposes of further detection and measurement of the absorbed material by bioluminescence immunoassay.  相似文献

The application of bioluminescent sensors for monitoring key metabolites and enzymes that are indicators of stress in plants is demonstrated. The sensitivity of bioluminescent assay for NAD(P)H and NAD(P)(+) was about 0.5 and 1 nmol, respectively. The levels of NAD(P)H and NAD(P)(+) in radish (Raphanus sativus) root extracts from controls and from stress-induced conditions were compared. To induce environmental stress, the plants were grown in enclosed environmental chambers with low pressure (9 or 32 kPa), high humidity (>80%) and low oxygen partial pressure (down to 3.3-6.5 kPa). The concentrations of NAD(P)(+) and NAD(P)H in plants varied under stress conditions. Decreasing both total pressure from 101.5 to 32 or 9 kPa and partial pressure of oxygen increased the ratio of NAD(P)(+) /NAD(P)H from 0.2 to 4 or 6, respectively. The increase in this ratio suggests that plants are undergoing stress in these hypobaric environments. The developed bioluminescent assay for quantification of pyridine nucleotides in plant tissues is rapid, low-cost and easily performed.  相似文献

Some living organisms produce visible light (bioluminescence) for intra- or interspecific visual communication. Here, we describe a remarkable bioluminescent adaptation in the marine snail Hinea brasiliana. This species produces a luminous display in response to mechanical stimulation caused by encounters with other motile organisms. The light is produced from discrete areas on the snail's body beneath the snail's shell, and must thus overcome this structural barrier to be viewed by an external receiver. The diffusion and transmission efficiency of the shell is greater than a commercial diffuser reference material. Most strikingly, the shell, although opaque and pigmented, selectively diffuses the blue-green wavelength of the species bioluminescence. This diffusion generates a luminous display that is enlarged relative to the original light source. This unusual shell thus allows spatially amplified outward transmission of light communication signals from the snail, while allowing the animal to remain safely inside its hard protective shell.  相似文献

Synopsis The spawning patterns of four Hawaiian reef fishes with similar reproductive habits, but different biogeographic distributions were studied from September 1980 to October 1981. Two species are Hawaiian endemics [Centropyge potteri (Pomacanthidae) and Chaetodon multicinctus (Chaetodontidae)] and the other two have pan-tropical Pacific distributions [Ctenochaetus strigosus and Zebrasoma flavescens (Acanthuridae)]. All showed increased spawning activity from January to July, the prevalent pattern among a majority of coastal marine fishes in Hawaii. Environmental correlatives to the period of peak reproduction include cycles of (a) daylight length and temperature which probably function as proximate cues and (b) seasonal variations in ocean current patterns which may ultimately affect survival of larvae and dispersal. Peak reproduction takes place during months when (1) mesoscale eddies most likely occur, and (2) the probability is greatest of drifting objects remaining near the islands.  相似文献

水栖萤火虫条背萤Luciola substriata (Gorh.)发出单脉冲周期性特异闪光信号进行求偶。室外观测发现,在23℃、86% RH时,雄萤飞行求偶闪光信号脉冲闪光持续时间为0.52 s,间隔时间为0.28 s,闪光信号的最大亮度为0.6 lx; 雌萤求偶信号周期为 0.67 s,最大亮度为0.4 lx。雄萤发出求偶信号0.22 s后,雌萤发出两个连续的回应信号。第一个回应信号为0.49 s,第二个为0.41 s, 两个回应信号的间隔时间为0.11 s。雄萤发现雌萤回应信号后,降落至离雌萤5~10 cm处,继续发出闪光信号,但闪光脉冲频率减小,闪光脉冲时间为1.23 s,间隔时间为0.50 s。条背萤交配时呈“V”或“一”字形交配姿势。  相似文献

Ciliate microzooplankton are important grazers in most pelagic ecosystems and among them, tintinnids, with their largely species‐specific loricas, allow relatively easy assessment of questions of diversity and distributions. Herein, we present the results of a survey of species records of tintinnids from the Southern Ocean (locations below 40°S) reported in 56 publications yielding 2,047 species records (synonyms included) from 402 locations. The 192 species reported can be parsed into two main groups: 32 endemic Southern Ocean species, known only from 40°S and further south, and a second group of 181 widespread species, forms with extensive geographic ranges extending into the Southern Ocean. Widespread species reported from the Southern Ocean can be further divided into a group of 81 species, each recorded multiple times in the Southern Ocean waters and 70 apparent “stray” species which have only been found but once. The endemic and widespread species of the Southern Ocean show both distinct distributional patterns and morphological differences. The assemblage of Southern Ocean endemics is found mostly within the Antarctic zone delimited by the average location of the Polar Front and contains a relatively large portion of wide‐mouthed forms. We give suggestions for future study.  相似文献

The goal of this study was develop a rapid high-throughput method for the assessment of the bacterial adhesion to tissue culture cells and test this method by investigation of the adhesion and growth of pathogenic and non-pathogenic Escherichia coli strains in the presence of HeLa human epithelial cells. Fifteen strains of E. coli were transformed with a plasmid carrying the entire lux operon of Photorhabdus luminescens to make them bioluminescent. By using the Time-to-Detection approach and bioluminescence imaging in microplate format, the adherence and growth of bacteria in tissue culture medium in the presence of HeLa cells was monitored. It was observed that Eagle's minimal essential medium (EMEM) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) significantly inhibited growth of E. coli. However, in the presence of HeLa cells the detected growth of E. coli was similar to the growth observed in LB medium. It was established that the initial number of E. coli cells present in the microplate directly correlated with the time necessary for the bioluminescence signal to reach the threshold level, hence allowing the accurate assessment of the adhered cells within 8-10 h. Neither bacterial adherence nor growth kinetics correlated with the pathogenicity of the strain though they were strain-specific. The developed approach provided new information on the interaction of E. coli with epithelial cells and could be used for both pathogenicity research and for the screening of potential therapeutic agents for the ability to minimize pathogen colonization of human tissues.  相似文献

于2011年11月28日至2012年1月12日调查了南海南部113°E断面(5—13°N)微微型浮游植物的空间分布,并分析了其分布与环境因子的关系。结果表明,调查海域原绿球藻,聚球藻和微微真核生物所有站位水柱丰度的均值分别为(1.71±0.47)×104、(1.50±0.72)×103和(1.30±0.50)×102个/m L,原绿球藻比聚球藻和微微型真核生物分别高1和2个数量级。原绿球藻主要分布在100m以浅,聚球藻主要分布在75m以浅且在25m丰度最高,而微微型真核生物主要分布在100m以浅,在25—75m内丰度最高,与叶绿素a浓度次表层最大值层相吻合。在9—11°N之间,原绿球藻和聚球藻最大值层上移且其最大值显著低于周围水体最大值;而在11—13°N之间,微微型真核生物出现次表层最大值,丰度明显高于周围水体最大值,这可能分别与调查期间采样区域中尺度冷涡上升流和中尺度暖涡下降流引起的水体运动有关。结果还显示,在深海寡营养站位,原绿球藻、聚球藻和微微型真核生物的碳生物量分别占微微型生物总碳生物量的(59.16±13.74)%、(23.86±10.83)%和(16.97±5.51)%,表明原绿球藻在光合微微型生物中占绝对优势。此外,相关性分析结果表明,聚球藻丰度与水体温度呈显著正相关,与盐度呈显著负相关;微微型真核生物与硝酸盐和磷酸盐浓度呈显著负相关。  相似文献

An account of the chaetognath and ostracod species obtained from zooplankton samples collected along a transect in the Western Indian Ocean between 9° N–20° S and 57° 18–68° 43E in January–February 1981 is given. Species richness was maximum north of 10° S. The latitudinal variation of thirteen species of chaetognaths indicated that many of the typical Indo-Pacific species are restricted to the tropical zone with limited penetration into the subtropical region. All the sixteen species of planktonic ostracods were cosmopolitan. Based on the available information on the distribution of chaetognaths and ostracods, the species assemblages in the Indian Ocean are discussed.  相似文献

A bioluminescence procedure for the determination of the guanylates has been optimized to allow measurement of 0.1 pmol amounts. Modifications of the Karl procedure include the use of purified firefly luciferase and nucleoside diphosphate kinase instead of a crude extract of firefly tails, the use of Tricine buffer instead of the inhibitory arsenate buffer, and optimization of the amounts of reagents and incubation times for each of the partial reactions. In the determination of GMP, background values varied widely with different lots of bovine guanylate kinase. Careful selection of a suitable lot of bovine brain guanylates. This establishes that selection of guanylate kinase must be based on experimental determination and not reported adenylate kinase activity. The wide variation in background was not eliminated by the inclusion of adenylate kinase inhibitors.  相似文献

Oxygen plays a key role in bacterial bioluminescence. The simultaneous and continuous kinetics of oxygen consumption and light emission during a complete exhaustion of the exogenous oxygen present in a closed system has been investigated. The kinetics are performed with Vibrio fischeri, V. harveyi, and Photobacterium phosphoreum incubated on respiratory substrates chosen for their different reducing power. The general patterns of the luminescence time courses are different among species but not among substrates. During steady-state conditions, substrates, which are less reduced than glycerol, have, paradoxally, a better luminescence efficiency. Oxygen consumption by luciferase has been evaluated to be 17% of the total respiration. Luciferase is a regulatory enzyme presenting a positive cooperative effect with oxygen and its affinity for this final electron acceptor is about 4–5 times higher than the one of cytochrome oxidase. The apparent Michaelis constant for luciferase has been evaluated to be in the range of 20 to 65 nM O2. When O2 concentrations are as low as 10 nM, luminescence can still be detected; this means that above this concentration, strict anaerobiosis does not exist. By n-butyl malonate titration, it was clearly shown that electrons enter the luciferase pathway only when the cytochrome pathway is saturated. It is suggested that, in bioluminescent bacteria, luciferase acts as a free-energy dissipating valve when anabolic processes (biomass production) are impaired.  相似文献

Invasions of aquatic habitats by non-indigenous species (NIS), including zooplankton, are occurring at an alarming rate and are causing global concern. Although hundreds of such invasions have now been documented, surprisingly little is known about the basic biology and ecology of these invaders in their new habitats. Here we provide an overview of the published literature on NIS zooplankton, separated by life history (holoplankton vs. meroplankton), habitat (marine, estuarine, freshwater), and biological level of organization or topic (e.g. distribution and range extension, physiology, behavior, feeding, community impacts, ecosystem dynamics, etc). Amongst the many findings generated by our literature search, perhaps the most striking is the paucity of studies on community and ecosystem level impacts of NIS zooplankton, especially in marine and estuarine systems. We also present some results from two ongoing studies of invasive zooplankton in the northeast Pacific Ocean – Pseudodiaptomus inopinus in Washington and Oregon coastal estuaries, and Tortanus dextrilobatus in San Francisco Bay. Both of these Asian copepods have recently expanded their range and can at times be extremely abundant (103 m–3). We also examine some aspects of the trophic (predator–prey) ecology of these two invasive copepods, and find that they are likely to be important in the flow of material and energy in the systems in which they now pervade, although their impacts at the ecosystem level remain to be quantified. Finally, the findings of both our literature search and our two case studies of invasive zooplankton lead us to make several recommendations for future research.  相似文献
