PurposeTo examine the associations of the frequency and type of everyday discrimination with diurnal cortisol and whether those associations depend upon adolescents' ethnicity and gender.MethodsAdolescents (N = 292, Mage = 16. 39 years, SD = 0.74; 58% female) reported the frequency of perceived everyday discrimination and whether they attributed that discrimination to race, gender, age, or height and weight. Five saliva samples were collected per day across 3 days and assayed for cortisol.ResultsHigher frequency of everyday discrimination was associated with greater total daily cortisol output (area under the curve; AUC), lower wake and bedtime levels of cortisol, and less of a decline in cortisol across the day. These associations generally did not depend upon ethnicity or gender and attributions for the discrimination were not as consequential as the actual frequency of any type of unfair treatment.ConclusionEveryday discrimination, regardless of its type, may contribute to heightened HPA activity among adolescents of different ethnic backgrounds and genders.  相似文献

Objectivesto study the balance and the gait by the Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA) in the population of people  65 years in function of age, gender; relation with the capacity to develop the activities of daily living, physical exercise, perception of health and previous falls.Material and methodsWe study a cohort of 443 people, 262 women and 181 men, representative of the population  65 years, resident in the community and able to walk from the city of Mataró. The evaluation was made with the 22 items POMA. Basic and instrumental activities of the daily life (Katz Index and Lawton), physical activity, health perception (Iowa test) were also assessed.Results29.3% of subjects did not present abnormalities in any of the items, 22.6% presented one abnormality, 12.4% two, and 35.7% three or more. 35.9% and 50.2 of subjects did not present abnormalities in the static and dynamic components respectively. Women had greater number of abnormalities than men (42.0% vs 20.6%) for the global and also for each of the two components (static and dynamic) (p < 0.0001). The number of abnormalities increased significantly with age, specially on those 75 years and older (p < 0.0001). A greater number of errors was correlated with less independence on the basic and instrumental activities of daily living, with less physical activity, health perception and with antecedents of previous falls.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sex composition of the group of lambs before puberty on later sexual performance in Awassi ram lambs. Thirteen Awassi ram lambs of the same age were raised in either all-male group (n = 7) or in a group mixed with females (n = 6) from weaning to puberty. Blood samples, body weights (BW) and scrotal circumferences (SC) of ram lambs were recorded between eight and 10 months of age. Sexual performance testing was performed at 9 months of age by individually exposing ram lambs to oestrous females on five occasions. Body weight and SC were greater (P < 0.01) in the all-male compared with the mixed group. Plasma testosterone concentrations were not influenced (P > 0.05) by treatment. Plasma testosterone concentrations were significantly correlated (P  0.05) with BW (r = 0.3) and SC (r = 0.4). No treatment effects were detected regarding bouts of leg-kicking. Bouts of anogenital sniffing, the frequency of mount attempts and mounting frequency were greater (P < 0.05) in the all-male group. Even though the frequency of raising the fat tail of females was similar between the two treatments, the mixed group tended to be (P = 0.08) more efficient in doing so than the all-male group (higher tail raising/mount). Results of the current study indicate that mixing groups of ram and ewe lambs before puberty may be insufficient to improve later sexual performance of ram lambs.  相似文献

Temperature and solar radiation can be important sources of abiotic stress for small herbivorous insects living in close association with plants. We examined the effects of daily fluctuations of heat and UV radiation on the proteome and performance of winged and wingless morphs of the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae. A daily regime of 4 h of heat stress at 35 °C had more negative effects on the aphid's fitness than a similar period of UV-B stress (11.6 kJ m?2 per day), and these effects were most pronounced on wingless aphids. Aphid proteomes as detected on 2-D gels revealed ~470 protein spots, with the fluctuating heat stress leading to many more changes than exposure to UV-B. The reduced performance of aphids under heat stress correlated with lower abundance of several enzymes in central pathways of energy metabolism, including the TCA cycle and the respiratory chain. Several exoskeletal proteins were induced or their abundance was increased under high temperature stress, suggesting that cuticle barrier enhancement at molting in response to heat stress is an aphid adaptation to stressful thermal conditions. The proteome of winged aphids was more broadly modulated under stress than that of wingless aphids. Greater homeostatic capabilities as revealed at the proteomic level could explain the higher tolerance of the alate aphid morph to environmental stress and its more stable performance and fitness.  相似文献

Many studies have found elevated cortisol linked to negative events (“stress”) and subsequent negative outcomes, such as reduced immunity and stunted growth, leading to the conclusion that high cortisol is “bad.” However, a growing number of studies have found more advantaged groups showing relatively elevated cortisol. For example, higher morning cortisol followed by a steeper diurnal decline among Caucasians compared to ethnic minorities has been interpreted as a context-specific “adaptive boost” to meet daily demands. We tested the adaptive boost hypothesis using data on socioeconomic status, depressive affect and salivary cortisol among adult men (n = 32) in Botswana. Three findings emerged: (i) depressive affect was associated with lower morning cortisol (r = ? 0.43, p = 0.014); (ii) depressive affect was associated with a diurnal increase in cortisol when comparing morning and evening samples (r = 0.49, p = 0.004); and (iii) depressive affect was associated with lower income (r = ? 0.55, p = 0.001). Findings are consistent with the adaptive boost hypothesis and add to a growing body of evidence that elevated cortisol is not universally bad. Hypothalamic–pituitary adrenal axis (HPAA) activity, such as cortisol, may be adaptive depending on a person's contextual circumstances. Based on our findings and those of previous studies, we develop a “person-in-context” model of the threat appraisal process. Integrated with life history theory, our model facilitates testable hypotheses about intra- and inter-individual variability in HPAA and adaptive consequences.  相似文献

Following the birth of an infant, decreases in testosterone and increases in depressive symptoms have been observed in fathers. Paternal testosterone may reflect fathers' investment in pair-bonding and paternal caregiving and, as such, may be associated with maternal and familial well-being. This study tests associations between paternal testosterone, paternal and maternal postpartum depressive symptoms, and subsequent family functioning.Within 149 couples, fathers provided testosterone samples when infants were approximately nine months old and both parents reported on postpartum depressive symptoms at two, nine, and 15 months postpartum. Fathers with lower aggregate testosterone reported more depressive symptoms at two and nine months postpartum. Mothers whose partners had higher evening testosterone reported more depressive symptoms at nine and 15 months postpartum. Maternal relationship satisfaction mediated this effect, such that mothers with higher testosterone partners reported more relationship dissatisfaction, which in turn predicted more maternal depressive symptoms. Higher paternal testosterone and paternal depressive symptoms at nine months postpartum each independently predicted greater fathering stress at 15 months postpartum. Higher paternal testosterone also predicted more mother-reported intimate partner aggression at 15 months postpartum. In addition to linear relationships between testosterone and depression, curvilinear relationships emerged such that fathers with both low and high testosterone at nine months postpartum reported more subsequent (15-month) depressive symptoms and fathering stress.In conclusion, whereas higher paternal testosterone may protect against paternal depression, it contributed to maternal distress and suboptimal family outcomes in our sample. Interventions that supplement or alter men's testosterone may have unintended consequences for family well-being.  相似文献

This work evaluates the possible changes in 24 h variations of striatal aspartate, glutamate, glutamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and taurine content after oral cadmium treatment. Male rats were submitted to cadmium exposure at two doses (25 and 50 mg/L of cadmium chloride (CdCl2)) in the drinking water for 30 days. Control rats received cadmium-free water. After the treatment, rats were killed at six different time intervals throughout a 24 h cycle. Differential effects of cadmium on 24 h amino acid fluctuations were observed. Metal exposure modified the daily pattern of the amino acids concentration found in control animals, except for GABA and taurine with the lowest dose used. Exposure to 25 mg/L of CdCl2 decreased mean content of aspartate, as well as GABA concentration. These results suggest that cadmium exposure affects 24 h changes of the studied amino acids concentration in the striatum, and those changes may be related to alterations in striatal function.  相似文献

Gonadectomy not only affects hormonal homeostasis but also alters the turnover of different components of the extracellular matrix in urogenital tissues. Collagen is an important component of the bladder and urethral walls and thus crucial for the mechanical properties of normal lower urinary tract (LUT) functions. This study aimed at investigating the possibility of differences in the proportion of collagen and muscle tissues in the LUT of intact and gonadectomised male and female dogs. Twenty clinically healthy dogs were used including 10 sexually intact dogs (5 males, 5 anoestrus females) and 10 gonadectomised dogs (4 males and 6 females). Four regions of the LUT, i.e. body and neck of the bladder as well as proximal and distal urethra were collected. The tissue sections were stained with Masson's Trichrome. Quantitative evaluation of the blue-stained area for collagen and red-counterstained area for muscle was performed using colour image analysis. The relative proportion of collagen and muscle significantly differed with the gonadal status, the gender and the region. Overall, gonadectomised dogs had a higher (P < 0.001) proportion of collagen and consequently a lower (P < 0.001) proportion of muscle than intact dogs. Regardless of gonadal statuses, females had a higher (P < 0.05) proportion of collagen and a lower (P < 0.05) proportion of muscle tissues than males. Gender differences were found in all four regions of the LUT in intact dogs but only in proximal urethra in gonadectomised dogs where spayed females had a higher (P < 0.05) proportion of collagen and less muscle (P < 0.05). Regional differences were observed in females; a higher proportion of collagen and therefore less muscle were found in the urethra compared with the bladder. Proportional differences in collagen and muscle between intact and gonadectomised animals suggest a relation of different hormonal statuses to structural changes in the canine LUT. Excessive collagen deposits and less muscular volume may impair structural and functional integrity of the LUT which may associate with the development of post-neutering urinary incontinence in the dog.  相似文献

A study was conducted to test the hypotheses that exogenous melatonin treatment of 11–13 month-old red deer hinds: (1) advances the timing of first ovulation, (2) increases the proportion of individuals attaining puberty at ~16 months of age, and (3) reduces the live-weight threshold for attainment of first pregnancy. A total of 3901 rising-2-year-old (R2) hinds within two herds (A and B) across two years either received single melatonin implants on two occasions in summer (n = 1399) or were untreated controls (n = 2502). Hinds were joined with stags from mid January to mid May, and were subjected to real-time rectal ultrasonography in early June to assess pregnancy status (proxy for puberty attainment) and foetal age for conception date assignment. Live-weights were recorded for each hind in January (12 months of age) as a proxy for weight at puberty. Melatonin treatment of hinds was associated with a significant advancement in mean conception dates in both herds in both years (P < 0.05), with a cohort difference in mean dates between treated and control hinds ranging from 9 to 17 days. Analysis of the temporal distribution of conception dates for each cohort revealed bi-modal or tri-modal patterns of conception indicative of conceptions to first or subsequent ovulations (oestrous cycles). Across all cohorts, melatonin treatment was associated with higher conception rates to first ovulation (P < 0.05) resulting in greater overall synchrony of conceptions. Regression analysis demonstrated a significant negative slope for conception date against live-weight (P < 0.001), but there was no evidence that this slope varied with treatment, herd or year (P > 0.05); for every 10 kg increase in live-weight conception date was advanced by an average of 1.3 days. In Herd A, melatonin treatment was associated with significantly higher pregnancy rates in both years (90.3% vs. 78.0% in Year 1 and 84.4% vs. 57.1% in Year 2; P < 0.05). The principle effect of melatonin treatment was to increase the pregnancy rate of hinds of low body-mass. In Year 1, at 60 kg live-weight a logit regression model indicated a pregnancy rate of 52% for untreated hinds and 83% for treated hinds. At 105 kg the rate for both cohorts was 90%. In Herd B, melatonin treatment was associated with higher conception rates in both years but these differences were not significant following correction for slight differences in mean live-weight (P > 0.05). The study has demonstrated that factors influencing puberty attainment in R2 red deer hinds can vary between populations. In Herd A, in which body mass of hinds immediately prior to their first potential breeding season may have been the principle limiting factor, melatonin treatment appears to have instigated the pubertal process in hinds that would otherwise be of insufficient body mass.  相似文献

Mother-child adrenocortical synchrony, the coupling of cortisol (CT) secretion in mother and child, has been associated with shared parent-child experiences and maladaptive familial contexts. Yet, few studies tested adrenocortical synchrony in diurnal CT patterns. Guided by the bio-behavioral synchrony model, we examined whether mother-child relational behavior and maternal psychopathology may moderate the degree of concordance between mother and child's diurnal CT. Ninety-seven mothers and their six-year old children participated in two groups; mothers diagnosed with major depression disorder (N = 28) and non-depressed controls (N = 69). Mother-child interactions were observed and coded for dyadic reciprocity and dyadic tension and diurnal cortisol was collected from mother and child over two consecutive weekend days. Concordance between maternal and child's diurnal CT was found, significant above and beyond time of measurement. Maternal depression, while associated with attenuated child diurnal CT variability, was unrelated to adrenocortical synchrony. Higher child diurnal CT production predicted a stronger linkage between maternal and child's diurnal CT, suggesting that greater child physiological stress is associated with increased susceptibility to the influences of maternal stress physiology. Mother-child reciprocity was related to lower adrenocortical synchrony. Findings suggest that higher adrenocortical synchrony is associated with greater physiological stress and less adaptive dyadic relational patterns. Results raise the possibility that diurnal adrenocortical synchrony taps a unique aspect of HPA-axis functioning whose role in the cross-generational transfer of stress physiology requires further research.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if the presence or absence of a corpus luteum (CL) during estrous synchronization in ewes can affect the ovarian follicular population and the serum oestradiol concentrations. The estrous cycles of 197 Sanjabi ewes were synchronized using a 12-day treatment with intravaginal progestagen sponges (Chronogest®). Estrus was detected in 144 ewes, 27–39 h after sponge removal. Blood samples were taken daily from day 2 and continued for 19 days and analyzed for serum oestradiol concentration. Nine ewes were slaughtered on each experimental day (days 1–16 after estrus) for ovary collection. The ovaries per ewe were classified as those without, or with one or two CL's, for each slaughter day. Visible follicles on the surface of the ovaries were classified, based on their diameter, into (i) very small (<2 mm), (ii) small (2–3.4 mm), (iii) medium (3.5–5 mm) and (iv) large (>5 mm) categories, and the respective numbers recorded. Results indicated, the number of ovarian follicles to decrease (P < 0.01) from days 1 to 5 of the cycle and showed a significant increase on day 7. Numbers were high again on day 11 and decreased (P < 0.01) on day 16 of the estrous cycle. The serum oestradiol concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the double than in the single ovulating animals (one or two CL's, respectively) on days 2–0. However serum levels were also significantly higher (P < 0.001) in single, than twin ovulating animals on days 4–5 and 12–16 of the estrous cycle. There were no significant differences in the total number of very small follicles between animals without and those with two CL's. The number of small, medium and large follicles in ewes, with or without a CL on the ovary was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than ewes with two ovulations at certain stages of the estrous cycle. The present study provides evidence of differences in the follicular ovarian population in ovaries without CL's and double ovulations. The existence of an intraovarian effect of the CL numbers on follicular population is demonstrated.  相似文献

Background and objectivesAt a same altitude, people with greater hypoxemia would have higher hemoglobin (Hb) levels than less hypoxemic patients. It is not known whether higher hypoxemia levels (as measured by higher Hb values) affect basal glucose and lipid profile at an altitude of 4,100 mg (Carhuamayo and Junln).Materials and methodsGlucose, lipid, and hemoglobin levels and body mass index (BMI) were assessed in 158 males and 348 females aged 35 to 75 years. Association of lipid and glucose levels with systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) was also assessed. Results were analyzed using Student's t test, Chi-square test, analysis of variance, correlations, and linear multivariate analyses adjusted for age, sex, BMI, smoking, and education.ResultsHigher hemoglobin levels were directly associated to higher levels of total cholesterol (P < 0.001), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < 0.002), non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL) (P < 0.01), and triglycerides (P < 0.01). No association was found between hemoglobin and glucose (P > 0.05). Levels of total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and blood glucose were directly associated to DBP.ConclusionsIn people living at high altitude (4100 m), the non-HDL cholesterol fraction and triglycerides are directly associated to hemoglobin value, and increases in them are in turn associated to higher DBP.  相似文献

A thermogradient apparatus was used to investigate the effect of variable dew temperatures on infection of green foxtail by the indigenous pathogen Pyricularia setariae (Ps) and the exotic pathogens Drechslera gigantea (Dg), and Exserohilum rostratum (Er) from the southern USA that showed bioherbicide potential against several grassy weeds. This device is capable of creating multiple diurnal temperature cycles, mimicking daily temperature fluctuations that occur under field conditions. Seven temperature regimes, i.e., 15/10 °C, 20/5 °C, 20/15 °C, 25/10 °C, 25/20 °C, 30/15 °C, and 30/25 °C (maximum/minimum), were used with temperature cycling from maximum to minimum and then back up to maximum in a 24 h period. Ps and Dg were much more virulent than Er on green foxtail, resulting in higher levels of disease and weed control. Dg was little affected by the dew temperatures in terms of plant infection and was more efficacious than Ps under cooler dew temperatures (15/10 °C and 20/5 °C), causing twice as much disease. This greater amount of disease coincided with higher conidial germination, appressorial formation and infection-hypha frequency by Dg at the lower temperatures. The efficacy of Ps improved as dew temperature increased, accompanied by a higher percentage of germination and more frequent appressorial production. Dg caused severe disease 2 d after inoculation whereas Ps required 4 d to initiate disease symptoms. These observations suggest that Dg is a superior candidate than Ps for green foxtail control on the Canadian prairies.  相似文献

A volatile metabolite, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), causes an unpleasant taste and odor in tap water. Some filamentous cyanobacteria produce 2-MIB via a two-step biosynthetic pathway: methylation of geranyl diphosphate (GPP) by methyl transferase (GPPMT), followed by the cyclization of methyl-GPP by monoterpene cyclase (MIBS). We isolated the genes encoding GPPMT and MIBS from Pseudanabaena galeata, a filamentous cyanobacterium known to be a major causal organism of 2-MIB production in Japanese lakes. The predicted amino acid sequence showed high similarity with that of Pseudanabaena limnetica (96% identity in GPPMT and 97% identity in MIBS). P. galeata was cultured at different temperatures to examine the effect of growth conditions on the production of 2-MIB and major metabolites. Gas chromatograph–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) measurements showed higher accumulation of 2-MIB at 30 °C than at 4 °C or 20 °C after 24 h of culture. Real-time-RT PCR analysis showed that the expression levels of the genes encoding GPPMT and MIBS decreased at 4 °C and increased at 30 °C, compared with at 20 °C. Furthermore, metabolite analysis showed dramatic changes in primary metabolite concentrations in cyanobacteria grown at different temperatures. The data indicate that changes in carbon flow in the TCA cycle affect 2-MIB biosynthesis at higher temperatures.  相似文献

IntroductionWalking speed (WS) is an easy, quick and inexpensive measure that could be used to discern between older people with greater and lesser function and thus individualize physical exercise programs.ObjectivesTo analyze the differences in physical capacity, physical activity, and quality of life in people over 65 years of age who attended a physical exercise program according to their WS and age.Methods55 women (mean age: 76.67 ± 6.66 years) were divided into groups based on their WS (low WS: ≤ 1.59 m/s and high WS: > 1.59 m/s) and age (older-younger: ≤ 76 years and older-older: > 76 years). The following parameters were compared: 10 Meters Walk Test (10MWT), Arm Curl Test, Handgrip, Chair Stand Test, 8 Foot Up and Go Test (8FUG), 6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT), and the Minnesota and The Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaires.ResultsThe level of physical activity was higher than 3000 METs/week in all groups. The high WS group had better results in the Arm Curl Test, 10MWT, 8FUG and 6MWT and in the Physical Role and Vitality dimensions of the SF-36 (P < .05). The older-older group had lower weight, BMI and Handgrip (P < .01).ConclusionsThe best results in physical capacity and quality of life are in those women with higher WS, suggesting that WS could be useful to individualize physical exercise programs.  相似文献

Maternal nutrient intake during gestation can alter fetal growth. Whilst this has been studied extensively in the sheep, less is known about effects in the bovine. Composite-breed beef heifers were allocated to either a high (H/? = 76 MJ metabolisable energy (ME) and 1.4 kg crude protein (CP)) or low (L/? = 62 MJ ME and 0.4 kg CP daily) nutritional treatment at artificial insemination. Half of each nutritional group changed to an opposite nutritional group at the end of the first trimester (?/H = 82 MJ ME and 1.4 kg CP; ?/L = 62 MJ ME and 0.4 kg CP daily), resulting in 4 treatment groups: HH (n = 16); HL (n = 19); LH (n = 17); LL (n = 19). During the third trimester all heifers were fed the same diets. Fetuses were measured at 4-weekly intervals beginning at day 39 of gestation. Calves were also measured at birth for physical body variables. Low maternal nutrient intake was associated with decreased crown-rump length at day 39 (P < 0.01) and increased thoracic diameter at day 95 (P < 0.01). Umbilical cord diameter was reduced in L/? fetuses in the first trimester (P < 0.05) but was greater in ?/L fetuses in the second trimester compared to their respective H counterparts (P < 0.05). Calf birth weight was decreased in association with ?/L maternal diets (P < 0.05). In conclusion, fetal development of cattle may be affected by maternal nutrition as early as day 39 of gestation. This may be followed by either compensatory fetal growth, or alternatively, preferential fetal tissue growth that is dependant upon maternal nutrition. Clearly, calf birth weight may be altered by maternal nutrition during mid-gestation.  相似文献

AimTo assess the effect of moderate regular aerobic physical activity not associated to body weight changes on insulin resistance and the associated metabolic changes in general population.Sujects and methodsA cross-sectional, observational study in an adult population (n=101 sujects aged 30-70 years) with no personal history of disease and with stable weight in the three months prior to the study. The group with regular exercise performed 30-60 minutes of moderate regular physical exercise 5 days per week (7.5-15 hours MET per week), while a control group performed no regular physical excersice and had a sedentary lifestyle. Subjects were age- and sex-matched. Lipids, lipoproteins, and HOMA index were measured using standard methods.ResultsThe group with regular physical activity consisted of 48 subjects (21 male/27 female), while the group with no regular physical activity included 53 subjects (31 male/22 female). No significant differences were found between the groups in age, sex, BMI, waist circunference, and blood presure. Significant differences were found between the groups in fasting serum triglyceride, HDL-C, and apoB levels. Fasting plasma insulin levels (12.1 ± 4.13 vs 14.9 ± 4.8 mU/L, P= .004) and HOMA index (2.8 ± 1.1 vs 3.5±4.1, P= .001) were significantly lower in the group with regular physical activity as compared to the sedentary group. Prevalence rates of metabolic syndrome were 20.7% and 45.8% (P=.01) in the regular physical activity and sedentary groups respectively.ConclusionModerate regular physical activity is associated to higher insulin sensitivity, an improved lipid profile, and a decrease in components of metabolic syndrome with no change in weight or BMI.  相似文献

Although testosterone (T) has been characterized as universally immunosuppressive across species and sexes, recent ecoimmunology research suggests that T's immunomodulatory effects (enhancing/suppressing) depend on the organism's reproductive context. Very little is known about the immune effects of T in healthy females, and even less about how reproductive effort modulates the immune effects of T in humans. We investigated how the interaction between endogenous T and sexual activity predicted menstrual cycle-related changes in several measures of immunity: inflammation (indexed by interleukin-6, IL-6), adaptive immunity (indexed by immunoglobulin A, IgA), and functional immunity (indexed by bactericidal assay). Thirty-two healthy women (sexually abstinent, N = 17; sexually active with one male partner, N = 15) provided saliva samples at four points in the menstrual cycle: menses, follicular, ovulation, and luteal phases. Among sexually abstinent women, T was positively associated with IL-6 across the cycle; for sexually active women, however, T was positively associated with IL-6 in the luteal phase only, and negatively associated with IL-6 at ovulation. High T predicted higher IgA among women who reported infrequent intercourse, but lower IgA among women who reported very frequent intercourse. Finally, across groups, T was positively associated with greater bacterial killing at menses, but negatively associated in the luteal phase. Overall, rather than being universally immunosuppressive, T appeared to signal immunomodulation relevant to reproduction (e.g., lowering inflammation at ovulation, potentially preventing immune interference with conception). Our findings support the hypothesis that the immunomodulatory effects of endogenous T in healthy females depend on sexual and reproductive context.  相似文献

Koinobiont parasitoid insects, which maintain intimate and long-term relationships with their arthropod hosts, constitute an association of ectothermic organisms that is particularly sensitive to temperature variations. Because temperature shows pronounced natural daily fluctuations, we examined if experiments based on a constant temperature range can mask the real effects of the thermal regime on host-parasitoid interactions. The effects of two fluctuating thermal regimes on several developmental parameters of the Drosophila larval parasitoid Leptopilina boulardi were analyzed in this study. Regime 1 included a range of 16–23–16 °C and regime 2 included a range of 16–21–26–21–16 °C (mean temperature 20.1 °C) compared to a 20.1 °C constant temperature. Under an average temperature of 20.1 °C, which corresponds to a cold condition of L. boulardi development, we showed that the success of parasitism is significantly higher under a fluctuating temperature regime than at constant temperature. A fluctuating regime also correlated with a reduced development time of the parasitoids. In contrast, the thermal regime did not affect the ability of Drosophila to resist parasitoid infestation. Finally, we demonstrated that daily temperature fluctuation prevented the entry into diapause for this species, which is normally observed at a constant temperature of 21 °C. Overall, the results reveal that constant temperature experiments can produce misleading results, highlighting the need to study the thermal biology of organisms under fluctuating regimes that reflect natural conditions as closely as possible. This is particularly a major issue in host-parasitoid associations, which constitute a good model to understand the effect of climate warming on interacting species.  相似文献

AimsKisspeptin, a peptide secreted by hypothalamic neurons, is a critical regulator of reproduction and puberty but its role in the regulation of gonadal maturation in sexually immature males is elusive. The present study investigated the effects of 12 days of pulsatile kisspeptin administration on gonadotropins and testosterone release and maturation of immature male gonads.Main methodsKisspeptin-10 was administered intraperitoneally at different dosage concentrations (1 μg, 1 ng, and 10 pg) to 5 weeks old prepubertal male rats, twice daily for 12 days. Plasma LH, FSH and testosterone concentrations were measured through competitive-binding radioimmunoassay. Spermatogenesis was studied mainly at stage VII of the spermatogenic cycle through light and electron microscopy.Key findingsAt the end of the treatments plasma LH and testosterone concentrations were reduced significantly at 1 ng and 1 μg kisspeptin doses (P < 0.05; P < 0.01). Type A spermatogonia, preleptotene spermatocytes, pachytene spermatocytes, step 7 spermatids, elongated spermatids and daily sperm production decreased significantly (P < 0.05). Sertoli cell efficiency and total support capacity of Sertoli cells were reduced at all doses (P < 0.05). Meiotic index decreased (P < 0.05) at 1 μg dose only, whereas coefficient of mitosis increased at 1 ng and 1 μg (P < 0.01) kisspeptin doses. Histologically, degeneration of seminiferous tubules was evident showing tubular necrosis, multinucleated giant cell formation, intratubular vacuolization, widened lumen and deshaped germ cells. Marked ultrastructural changes characterized by thin basal laminae, enlarged intratubular spaces, abnormal acrosome and disrupted germ cells were noticeable.SignificanceIn conclusion long-term kisspeptin-10 administration negatively regulates gonadal maturation in prepubertal testes.  相似文献
