Summary In the area of Haidach (Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria), coral-rudist mounds, rudist biostromes, and bioclastic limestones and marls constitute an Upper Cretaceous shelf succession approximately 100 meters thick. The succession is part of the mixed siliciclasticcarbonate Gosau Group that was deposited at the northern margin of the Austroalpine microplate. In its lower part, the carbonate succession at Haidach comprises two stratal packages that each consists, from bottom to top, of a coral-rudist mound capped by a rudist biostrome which, in turn, is overlain by bioclastic limestones and, locally, marls. The coral-rudist mounds consist mainly of floatstones. The coral assemblage is dominated by Fungiina, Astreoina, Heterocoeniina andAgathelia asperella (stylinina). From the rudists, elevators (Vaccinites spp., radiolitids) and recumbents (Plagioptychus) are present. Calcareous sponges, sclerosponges, and octocorals are subordinate. The elevator rudists commonly are small; they settled on branched corals, coral heads, on rudists, and on biolastic debris. The rudists, in turn, provided settlement sites for corals. Predominantly plocoid and thamnasteroid coral growth forms indicate soft substrata and high sedimentation rates. The mounds were episodically smothered by carbonate mud. Many corals and rudists are coated by thick and diverse encrustations that indicate high nutrient level and/or turbid waters. The coral-rudist mounds are capped byVaccinites biostromes up to 5 m thick. The establishment of these biostromes may result from unfavourable environmental conditions for corals, coupled with the potential of the elevator rudists for effective substrate colonization. TheVaccinites biostromes are locally topped by a thin radiolitid biostrome. The biostromes, in turn, are overlain by bioclastic limestones; these are arranged in stratal packages that were deposited from carbonate sand bodies. Approximately midsection, an interval of marls with abundantPhelopteria is present. These marls were deposited in a quiet lagoonal area where meadows of sea grass or algae, coupled with an elevated nutrient level, triggered the mass occurrence ofPhelopteria. The upper part of the Haidach section consists of stratal packages that each is composed of a rudist biostrome overlain by bioclastic wackestones to packstones with diverse smaller benthic foraminifera and calcareous green algae. The biostromes are either built by radiolitids,Vaccinites, andPleurocora, or consist exclusively of radiolitids (mainlyRadiolites). Both the biostromes and the bioclastic limestones were deposited in a low-energy lagoonal environment that was punctuated by high-energy events.In situ-rudist fabrics typically have a matrix of mudstone to rudistclastic wackestone; other biogens (incl. smaller benthic foraminifera) are absent or very rare. The matrix of rudist fabrics that indicate episodic destruction by high-energy events contain a fossil assemblage similar to the vertically associated bioclastic limestones. Substrata colonized by rudists thus were unfavourable at least for smaller benthic foraminifera. The described succession was deposited on a gently inclined shelf segment, where coral-rudist mounds and hippuritid biostromes were separated by a belt of bioclastic sand bodies from a lagoon with radiolitid biostromes. The mounds document that corals and Late Cretaceous elevator rudists may co-occur in close association. On the scale of the entire succession, however, mainly as a result of the wide ecologic range of the rudists relative to corals, the coral-dominated mounds and the rudist biostromes are vertically separated.  相似文献

Summary Rudist and stromatoporid associations of the Campanian from Central Oman are nearly monospecific. They are dominated byDurania aff.nicholasi, Vaccinites vesiculosus, Torreites milanovici or phaceloid and massive stromatoporids. Several other rudist genera play a secondary role. The thickness of the associations is rarely more than one metre. Solitary corals do not occur in the associations. Colonial corals are less common, although they are up to 1 m high and show considerable diversity. There are no binders. The reef structure indicates variable hydrodynamic conditions. They are always associated with very shallow water. The pureDurania aff.nicholasi patches with large colonial corals andTorreites milanovici are presumably the most rigid structures. The near monospecific associations ofVaccinites vesiculosus are widely distributed. Although mostly preserved in situ, strong currents, presumably caused by tropical storms, have repeatedly impaired and interrupted growth. The specific growth characteristics of the shell of some rudists, especially the radiolitids, enable an estimation of the individual lifespan. Frameworks of approximately 1 metre thickness probably developed in ±100 years. The sediments of the complete sections are predominantly bioclastic.  相似文献

Rudist bed type and distribution has been investigated in Upper Cretaceous limestones cropping out in the northern Cilento area (southern Italy). These limestones are dominated by fine-grained, peloidal, silty packstone in which rudist-rich beds are intercalated. An inner shelf environment may be inferred on the basis of the recognized sedimentary and taphonomic features. The rudist shell beds are characterized by low species diversity, with slight differences in abundance of a few species belonging to the Durania, Bournonia, Sauvagesia, Gorjanovicia and Biradiolites genera, which usually form oligo- or monospecific congregations. The internal fabric of these levels (i.e. orientation, arrangement, packing and sorting of the skeletal elements; internal microstratigraphy) has permitted us to distinguish two broad shell bed categories: (a) shell beds considered as “Primary Shell Concentration”, in which the shell concentration is essentially created by the behaviour of local shell producers, preserved in situ and in growth position; (b) shell beds considered as “Hydraulic Shell Concentration”, which were deposited under the influence of hydraulic processes and/or input of surrounding bioclastic sediments. The taphonomic analyses allowed us to highlight the role of some of the biotic and abiotic factors that controlled the distribution of the rudists in the various habitats. The increase of physical disturbance (especially hydrodynamism) is the primary difference between these shell bed categories. The establishment and development of the densest rudist congregations appear to be related to the accommodation space made available by means of relative sea level rise. The lowering of the sea level was often accompanied by the increased influence of waves and/or currents on the seabed and the consequent sediment disturbance and demise of the rudist lithosome, although other factors cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Summary Stratigraphic and microfacies investigations carried out on the Oligocene sequence exposed at Gabal Bu Husah, northwest of Marada Oasis, south of the Sirte Basin, Libya, showed that the Oligocene sequence conformably overlies the Late Eocene Thamat Formation and unconformably underlies the Early to Middle Miocene Marada Formation (Qarat Jahannam Member). The lithostratigraphic studies of the Oligocene sequence revealed the presence of two rock units, from base to top: 1- Umm Ad Dahiy Formation (Early Oligocene, Rupelian) and 2- Bu Hashish Formation (Late Oligocene, Chattian). The Oligocene sequence yields a rich foraminiferal assemblage with fifty-one benthonic and large formaminiferal species. The foraminiferal analysis allowed to subdivide the sequence into three local foraminiferal assemblage zones, arranged stratigraphically from base to top: 1)Elphidium minutum zone comprising the Umm Ad Dahiy Formation. 2)Miogypsinoides complanatus/Nonion granosus assemblage zone covering the lower two thirds of the Bu Hashish Formation. 3) Zone with abundantNummulites spp., including the upper part of the Bu Hashish Formation. The paleoenvironmental significance of the recorded species is described and discussed. The microfacies studies led to the recognition of eleven microfacies types. These microfacies indicate that the lower part of the Umm Ad Dahiy Formation was deposited in a shallow warm marine environment, but the conditions changed to fluviomarine in the uppermost part. The Bu Hashish Formation was deposited in a shallow-marine, inner-shelf environment (as indicated by the operculinid limestone) but a probable hiatus in its middle part is indicated by the presence of a nummulitic coquina and gypsum beds formed in a lagoonal environment. After returning to a shallow marine environment at the end of Oligocene the marine sedimentation ended.  相似文献

The Cenomanian-Turonian sequence is well exposed in western central Sinai and contains a considerable number of rudist species. The identified rudists belong to Radiolitidae, Hippuritidae and Requieniidae. Fifteen species are described, belonging to ten genera: Requienia, Toucasia, Apricardia, Radiolites, Eoradiolites, Praeradiolites, Sphaerulites, Sauvagesia, Hippurites, and Vaccinites. Eleven species are reported in the Cenomanian and four species in the Turonian. Within the Cenomanian, two new species are described: Requienia tortuosi and Eoradiolites lenisexternus. The genus Requienia and the species Apricardia carentonenis d’Orbigny, Eoradiolites syriacus (Conrad), Sphaerulites agariciformis Delamétherie, Sphaerulites depressus Blanckenhorn and Vaccinites cf. grossouvrei (Douvillé) are reported for the first time from Egypt. The Cenomanian and Turonian rudists in the western Sinai show either elevator or clinger morphotypes, with the predominance of the former type; recumbent mode of life is rarely represented by some Requieniidae. The elevators are of isolated and clustered occurrences and more represented in the Cenomanian sequence. Rudists of the study area are mainly of parautochthonous fabrics with low to dense packing. Autochthonous fabrics are also achieved by some species, mainly in the Turonian. The disappearance of rudists from the middle part of the sequence and above the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary is due to a deeper setting that resulted from sea-level rise or seafloor subsidence (shelf drowning). The occurrence of rudists with oysters and other benthic fossils in the siliciclastic and carbonate sediments of the Cenomanian and Turonian sedimentary rocks in the Sinai indicate that the sequence was deposited on a broad, shallow shelf. Although the first marine transgression invaded the central Sinai in the late Cenomanian, transgressive deepening conditions continued until the Turonian. The rudists of central Sinai are of Tethyan affinity with significant relation with North Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Europe.  相似文献

A new polyconitid rudist, Magallanesia canaliculata gen. et sp. nov., of probably late Albian age, is described from the Pulangbato area, central Cebu Island, the Philippines in the western Central Pacific and Takuyo‐Daini Seamount, now located in the Northwest Pacific. It is similar to Praecaprotina Yabe and Nagao, 1926, a Japanese–Central Pacific endemic genus of late Aptian – early Albian age, but differs in having canals that developed by partitioning of the large ectomyophoral cavity in the posterior part of the left valve. Its discovery strengthens the evidence for Pacific endemism in Albian times. Several other clades of canaliculate rudists flourished or evolved at the same time in different regions of the Tethyan Realm, suggesting the presence of common global biological and/or environmental factors stimulating the evolution of the canals despite such endemism. Furthermore, the finding of a canaliculate polyconitid provides evidence in favour of the evolutionary hypothesis of a polyconitid origin for the Late Cretaceous canaliculate rudist family Plagioptychidae Douvillé, 1888.  相似文献

Five sections of the Cardenas and Tabaco formations in east-central Mexico have been analyzed by means of bio-, Sr-isotope, and sequence stratigraphy, in order to evaluate their age as well as the timing of rudist decline.Ammonites [Pachydiscus (Pachydiscus) neubergicus (Hauer), Sphenodiscus pleurisepta (Conrad), Coahuilites sheltoni Böse] indicate an early Maastrichtian age for the topmost lower member of the Cardenas Formation and planktic foraminifera [e.g., Globotruncanita stuarti (de Lapparent), Archaeoglobigerina cretacea (d’Orbigny), Globotruncanella petaloidea (Gandolfi), Gansserina gansseri (Bolli), Globotruncana linneiana (d’Orbigny)] a late early Maastrichtian age for the middle member corresponding to the foraminiferal zones CF5 and CF6. Sr-isotope stratigraphic data yield an early late Maastrichtian age (66.93 Ma < 67.98 Ma < 68.96 Ma) for the last rudist assemblage in the topmost upper member of the Cardenas Formation, coinciding with the foraminiferal zone CF4.17 small-scale and 3 large-scale depositional cycles have been identified, which correspond to para- and depositional sequences. The progradational pattern of the large-scale cycles indicates an overall regression trend, which terminated in subaerial exposure of the area, indicated by paleosoils in the red beds of the Tabaco Formation. The correlation of the large-scale cycles with the global sea level charts indicate that eustatic sea level fall caused the regression and led to the exposure during the middle late Maastrichtian. This subaerial exposure resulted in the loss of habitat and thus the disappearance of rudists in east-central Mexico.  相似文献

An ichnofauna consisting of 18 ichnospecies (one of them new) in 14 ichnogenera are described for the first time from the Middle Jurassic Ridang Formation in Sajia County, South Tibet. The ichnofauna can be subdivided into two ichnoassemblages in ascending stratigraphic order: the Palaeophycus–Megagrapton ichnoassemblage in the lower and middle parts of the Ridang Formation, followed by the CosmorhapheNereites–Paleodictyon ichnoassemblage in the upper Ridang Formation. Overall, the trace fossils occur in a middle–distal turbidite fan sequence, as evidenced by both sedimentological analysis and the composition of the trace fossils. Several subenvironments of the middle–distal fan system have been recognized on the basis of the spatial distribution of the trace fossils. Typically, the channel-fill deposits in the middle part of the turbidite fan lack trace fossils, the interchannel and upper channel-fill (levee) subenvironments of the middle turbidite fan contain abundant facies-crossing trace fossils, in contrast to the distal part of the turbidite fan where deep-water trace fossils are dominant. The ichnofauna is similar to typical flysch ichnofaunas from Europe and North America in characteristics, and is interpreted to represent a typical deep-sea Nereites ichnofacies. The presence of these deep-sea trace fossils therefore would suggest that a continental slope environment existed in southern Tibet during the Middle Jurassic and the study area was located in a slope-abyssal plain setting.  相似文献

The Upper Cretaceous (Middle Cenomanian-Coniacian) successions of the Bey Da?lar? Carbonate Platform (Western Taurides, SW Turkey) are represented by rudist-bearing shallow-water limestones. Four rudist lithosomes are distinguished for the first time from the Eastern, Northern and Southern Areas of the Bey Da?lar? Autochthon. The oldest rudist assemblages dominated by caprinids are observed in the Eastern (Katran Da?) Area (caprinid lithosomes) and suggest a Middle-Late Cenomanian age. The uppermost part of the platform carbonates in the Northern Area is characterized by an association of hippuritid and radiolitid rudist bivalves dominated by Vaccinites praegiganteus (Toucas) (hippuritid lithosomes). The rudist fauna indicates the Late Turonian age, which is confirmed by the previously obtained 87Sr/86Sr values of well-preserved low-Mg calcite of Vaccinites praegiganteus (Toucas) shells. The rudist associations of the Southern (Susuzda?) Area are represented by two rudist formations. The lower lithosomes are mainly made up of hippuritids and radiolitids (hippuritid-radiolitid lithosomes). The stratigraphical distributions of the species of the assemblage indicate a Santonian-Early Campanian age. The rudist associations of the upper lithosomes are dominated by species of Joufia and Gorjanovicia (Joufia-Gorjanovicia lithosomes), which suggest a Late Campanian-Maastrichtian age. Identification of the rudist lithosomes yields information on the palaeobiogeographic distribution of the rudist species in the eastern Mediterranean region and also on the biostratigraphic frame of the Upper Cretaceous successions of the Bey Da?lar? Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 450–461. During the Cretaceous, rudist bivalves were among the most important benthic carbonate producers on tropical to sub‐tropical carbonate platforms. Yet questions concerning the biology of rudist bouquets remain unanswered to a great extent. In this study a monospecific bouquet of the small radiolitid rudist Biradiolites mooretownensis has been evaluated from a palaeobiological angle. Three‐dimensional, high‐resolution, quantitative analysis provides a detailed evaluation of growth and reproduction in an in situ rudist association. A total of 1237 consecutive tomograms with a vertical spacing of 0.1 mm were produced of which 1150 have been digitally measured for total area, number of specimens, packing density, spat density, recruitment, survival time, mortality and accommodation space. The results show constant coverage of about 60%, a stable packing density of 3.2 specimens per cm2 and constant reproduction throughout the bouquet. Time series analysis (spectral analysis) using PAST statistical software shows cyclic spat density every 14.9 mm of vertical growth. Combined with the results of the δ18O isotope analysis (showing cyclicities of 14 mm) one reproduction cycle appears to be annual. 46.4% of all counted specimens died before 3 mm of vertical growth. More than 93% of the initial spat does not exceed 15 mm shell height or 1 year respectively. Two mortality peaks in the juvenile’s life at 4 and 10–15 mm shell height either represent important obstacles in the ontogenetic development of the species or reflect external influences. □ Biradiolites, grinding tomography, palaeobiology, population dynamics, reproduction, rudists, sclerochronology, seasonality.  相似文献

Summary The dolomitic Wojciechowice Formation distinctly differs from the remaining, mainly shaly Middle Devonian succession in northern part of the Holy Cross Mountains (Central Poland). The upper Member of the Formation (Crystalline Dolostone Mb.), in greater part dolomitized but also containing limestone beds, is composed of shallowing-upward cyclothems well exposed in Skaly quarry in the Bodzentyn syncline. The lower parts of the cyclothems, interpreted as subtidal facies, contain fossils characteristic for restricted environments. They are grouped into two assemblages. The first, with brachiopods (largeBornhardtina andEmanuella), massive stromatoporoids, and subordinate gastropods and amphiporoids is related to a deeper subtidal environment, while the second (mainly amphiporoids, gastropods, ostracodes and calcareous algae) is shallower subtidal. Towards the top of succession the fossil content radically decreases. The upper parts of cyclothems are composed mainly of different types of laminites. In these parts of the section, interpreted as intertidal/supratidal units, stromatolites, desiccation polygons, intraformational breccias, and common bioturbations are present. The whole succession was deposited in a low-energy environment, only intermittently affected by high-energy events. For their most spectacular example of this, aBornhardtina-coquinite, a tempestitic origin is proposed. The interval with cyclic sedimentation studied correlates with the dolomitized lower “Unit I” of the Stromatoporoid-Coral Kowala Formation from the southern part of the Holy Cross Mountains, which exhibits sabkha-type cyclicity. The differences in development of cyclothems in both regions resemble outer and inner part of an extensive platform, and correspond well with basic trends of the Lower-Middle Devonian transgression in the Holy Cross Mountains. The general succession of formations deposited during this process coincides with transgressive events on Johnson's eustatic curve for the Devonian.  相似文献

Microbiota decussata Kom. (Cupressaceae) is a subalpine species endemic to the Sikhote Alin Mountains with populations scattered throughout the range. We used sequence data for four noncoding regions of chloroplast DNA to characterize the genetic diversity in populations sampled from different parts of M. decussata natural range. No variation was observed in the trnT–trnF region, whereas the trnH–psbA, trnS–trnfM, and trnS–trnG regions showed polymorphisms. At the species level, we found a low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.0009) and high haplotype diversity (h = 0.981) as well as high differentiation (ΦST = 0.420). N ST and G ST values suggested the existence of a phylogeographic structure in M. decussata. The observed patterns of diversity could be explained in part by ecological features of the species and its long-term persistence throughout the range with population expansion, successive fragmentation and isolation.  相似文献

Telomeres of most insects are composed of simple (TTAGG) n repeats that are synthesized by telomerase. However, in some dipteran insects such as Drosophila melanogaster, (TTAGG) n repeats or telomerase activity has not been detected. Although telomere structure is well documented in Diptera and Lepidoptera, very limited information is available on lower insect groups. To understand general aspects of telomere function and evolution in insects, we endeavored to characterize structures of the telomeric and subtelomeric regions in a lower insect, the Taiwan cricket, Teleogryllus taiwanemma. FISH analysis of this insect's chromosomes demonstrated (TTAGG) n repeat elements in all distal ends. Just proximal to the telomeric repeats, the highly conserved 9-kb long terminal unit (LTU) sequences are tandemly repeated. These were observed in four of six chromosomes, three autosomal ends, and one X-chromosomal end. LTU sequences represent about 0.2% of the T. taiwanemma genome. Each LTU contains a core (TTAGG)8-like sequence (TRLS) and five types of conserved sequences—ST (short telomere associated), J (joint), X, SR (satellite sequence rich), and Y—which vary in length from about 150 bp to 2.7 kb. The LTU sequence is defined as ST–J–TRLS–SR–X–Y–X–Y–X. Most LTU regions may be derived from the ancestral common sequence, which is observed in ST regions six times and at many other LTU sites. We could not find the LTU-like sequence in three other crickets including the closest species, T. emma, suggesting that the LTU in T. taiwanemma has been rapidly amplified in subtelomeric regions through recent evolutional events. It is also suggested that the highly conserved structure of the LTU is maintained by recombination and may contribute to telomere elongation, as seen in dipteran insects. Rudistid lithosomes cropping out near Castrojimeno, at the northern margin of the Central System in north-central Spain, provide detailed information on their composition and structure, on their development and succession, and about their relationship with the Coniacian sequence stratigraphy framework of the Iberian Basin. Most rudist assemblages are oligospecific, with a dominant species, or monospecific. The radiolitids Biradiolites angulosus, Praeradiolites requieni, and Radiolites sauvagesi and the hippuritids Hippurites incisus and Vaccinites giganteus were identified. Radiolitids demonstrate wide intraspecific morphological variability. The following Riding’s structural categories of organic reefs are represented: segment reefs, spaced and close cluster reefs, and close cluster/frame reefs. Bioclastic beds of reworked rudist fragments occur below or in between the rudist reefs. The vertical succession of all five types of rudistid lithosomes distinguished evidences a shallowing-upward trend. Rudistid lithosomes developed on the coastal margin during the superposition of the highstand sea-level stage of third- and fourth-order depositional sequences.  相似文献

The community structure of the bacteria associated with Nodularia spumigena (Mertens) cyanobacterial aggregates in the Baltic Sea was studied with temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE), using a 16S rRNA gene fragment as a target. Various developmental stages of the aggregates and free-floating cyanobacterial filaments were sampled to reveal possible changes in associated microbial community structure during development and senescence of the aggregates. The microbial community structures of all samples differed, and the communities of young and decaying aggregates were separated by cluster analysis of the TGGE fingerprint data. Sequencing of the TGGE fragments indicated the presence of bacteria from the α-, β-, and γ-proteobacterial groups, as well as members of Cytophaga–Flexibacter–Bacteroides lineages and gram-positive Actinobacteria spp. The majority of the Nodularia-associated sequences were not closely related to previously reported 16S rDNA sequences from the Baltic Sea or any other environment. The structure of the bacterial assemblage reflects the environmental changes associated with the succession and decay of the cyanobacterial aggregates. In addition, the sequence data suggest that the N. spumigena (Mertens) blooms in the Baltic Sea may host thus far uncharacterized bacterial species.  相似文献

Tropical plant canopies show abrupt changes in light conditions across small differences in spatial and temporal scales. Given the canopy light heterogeneity, plants in this stratum should express a high degree of plasticity, both in space (allocation to plant modules as a function of opportunity for resource access) and time (photosynthetic adjustment to temporal changes in the local environment). Using a construction crane for canopy access, we studied light acclimation of the liana Stigmaphyllon lindenianum to sun and shade environments in a tropical dry forest in Panama during the wet season. Measured branches were randomly distributed in one of four light sequences: high- to low-light branches started the experiment under sun and were transferred to shade during the second part of the experiment; low- to high-light branches (LH) were exposed to the opposite sequence of light treatments; and high-light and low-light controls , which were exposed only to sun and shade environments, respectively, throughout the experiment. Shade branches were set inside enclosures wrapped in 63% greenhouse shade cloth. After 2 months, we transferred experimental branches to opposite light conditions by relocating the enclosures. Leaf mortality was considerably higher under shade, both before and after the transfer. LH branches reversed the pattern of mortality by increasing new leaf production after the transfer. Rates of photosynthesis at light saturation, light compensation points, and dark respiration rates of transferred branches matched those of controls for the new light treatment, indicating rapid photochemical acclimation. The post-expansion acclimation of sun and shade foliage occurred with little modification of leaf structure. High photosynthetic plasticity was reflected in an almost immediate ability to respond to significant changes in light. This response did not depend on the initial light environment, but was determined by exposure to new light conditions. Stigmaphyllon responded rapidly to light changes through the functional adjustment of already expanded foliage and an increase in leaf production in places with high opportunity for carbon gain. A new species of the hillstream loach genus Balitora Gray, Balitora ludongensis, from Qilong River which drains to Zuojiang River (a headwater of the Pearl River) drainage, Jingxi County, Guangxi, China. It can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: pectoral fin with vi–vii, 11–12 rays; pelvic fin with ii, 6–7 rays; pre-oral groove relatively shallow, upper lip without or with 3–5 fold-like papillae in a row on its middle surface and gradually smooth to the corner of mouth; two maxillary barbels at each corner of mouth, the outer one slightly longer than the inner one, 149.0–190.9% of eye diameter; eyes small, eye diameter 14.2–18.1% of head length; Dorsal-fin origin slightly anterior to pelvic-fin origin; Caudal-peduncle depth 39.1–55.0% of its length; upper lobe of caudal fin longer than the lower one; lateral-line scales 69–74; with 6–9 black blotches on the dorsal side of body.  相似文献

Vibrio sp. GMD509, a marine bacterium isolated from eggs of the sea hare, exhibited lipolytic activity on tributyrin (TBN) plate, and the gene representing lipolytic activity was cloned. As a result, an open reading frame (ORF) consisting of 1,017 bp (338 aa) was found, and the deduced amino acid sequence of the ORF showed low similarity (<20%) to α/β hydrolases such as dienelactone hydrolases and esterase/lipase with G–X1–S–X2–G sequence conserved. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the protein belonged to a new family of esterase/lipase together with various hypothetical proteins. The enzyme was overexpressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. The purified enzyme (Vlip509) showed the best hydrolyzing activity toward p-nitrophenyl butyrate (C4) among various p-nitrophenyl esters (C2 to C18), and optimal activity of Vlip509 occurred at 30°C and pH 8.5, respectively. Kinetic parameters toward p-nitrophenyl butyrate were determined as K m (307 μM), k cat (5.72 s−1), and k cat/K m (18.61 s−1 mM−1). Furthermore, Vlip509 preferentially hydrolyzed the S-enantiomer of racemic ofloxacin ester. Despite its sequence homology to dienelactone hydrolase, Vlip509 showed no dienelactone hydrolase activity. This study represents the identification of a novel lipolytic enzyme from marine environment.  相似文献
