Climate change is likely to have far-reaching effects on biotic interactions in aquatic ecosystems. We investigated the effect of different spring warming scenarios on the succession of three algal groups (cyanobacteria, diatoms and green algae) in 10-l microcosms. We fitted these microcosm data to a simple mechanistic model to estimate the effect of different climate warming scenarios on the population dynamics of these algal functional groups. Experimental and model results indicate that the different algal functional groups respond differently to climate warming under phosphorus-limited conditions. Whereas the successional sequence, from diatoms to green algae to cyanobacteria, was not affected by the different climate warming scenarios, cyanobacteria showed a stronger response to the different climate warming scenarios than diatoms or green algae. Both the growth rates and peak abundances of cyanobacteria were significantly higher in the average and warm spring scenarios than in the cold spring scenario. Our findings illustrate that integration of models and microcosm experiments are a useful approach in predicting the impacts of rising temperatures on the dynamics of phytoplankton communities.  相似文献

Forty-six male train drivers (mean age = 46.5, SD = 5.1) were recruited to participate in a diary study for 14 consecutive days with questions about their sleep and working hours. A polynomial mixed-effect regression model showed a curvilinear relation ( p < .001) between shift-start time and sleep duration for shifts starting at 03:00-12:00 hand with a near linear increase for ones starting between 04:30 and 09:00 h of approximately 0.7 h for every 1 h the shift was delayed. The longest sleeps were estimated at approximately 8 h before shifts that started at approximately 10:00 h. The shortest sleeps were found for shifts that started before 04:30 h and were estimated at approximately 5 h. Individual differences were estimated with a random-effect standard deviation of 0.51 h, independent of shift start time ( p = .005). One-half of the between-subject variance was explained by subjective health. A one-step decrease in health was associated with a 26 min increase in sleep length. The results have practical implications for constructing shift schedules. Early morning shifts reduced sleep length substantially and should be mixed with later start hours to avoid the accumulation of sleep dept. Delaying the shift-start past 10:00 h had little effect on sleep opportunity; however, delaying shift-start to between 04:30 and 9:00 h had a strong impact on sleep length, with 70% of the extra time used for sleep, suggesting large positive effects for this range of shift-start times.  相似文献

In this report, an experimental approach and newly designed apparatus for liquid ventilation of preterm animals are described. Findings of age-related changes in cardiopulmonary function of this animal preparation are presented. Thirty-one lambs, 102-137 days gestation (term 147 +/- 3 days), were studied. The carotid artery, jugular vein, and trachea of the exteriorized fetus were cannulated under local anesthesia. Immediately after cesarean section delivery, ventilation commenced; warmed (39 degrees C) and oxygenated (PIO2 greater than 500 Torr) liquid fluorocarbon (RIMAR 101) was delivered to the lung by a mechanically assisted liquid ventilation system. Skeletal muscle paralysis, low-dose exogenous buffering, and thermal support were maintained during the 3-h experiment. Pulmonary gas exchange, acid-base status, and cardiopulmonary and metabolic function were assessed. By utilizing these techniques, effective arterial oxygenation, CO2 elimination, acid-base status, and cardiovascular stability were supported independent of gestational age. The results demonstrate a developmental increase in specific lung compliance and mean arterial pressure and decrease in heart rate and systemic O2 consumption per kilogram with advancing gestational age. These findings demonstrate that liquid ventilation negates the dependency of effective pulmonary gas exchange on surfactant development, thereby extending the limits of viability of the immature extrauterine lamb. As such this new experimental approach is useful for the study of physiological development over an age range previously limited to fetal animal preparations and, therefore, may provide insight regarding adaptation of the premature to the extrauterine environment.  相似文献

The observational and experimental approaches to ecological studies are outlined and contrasted. Most studies involving benthic diatoms are still at the observational stage. Community analyses are interpreted in relation to physico-chemical variables, but without reference to the intrinsic growth characteristics of the species or to biological interactions. By allowing separate investigation of the effects of chosen variables under controlled conditions, culture studies permit field predictions to be tested and our understanding of the constraints on growth of particular species to be improved.Results of culture experiments on four benthic diatom species grown under contrasting light, temperature, and pH regimes are presented and discussed in relation to their field distributions. Synedra ulna showed a positive response to both light and temperature; Meridion circulare was more sensitive to raised water temperature at higher light intensity; Pinnularia viridis and Eunotia exigua grew over wider ranges of temperature and pH than recorded from published data. The experimental results indicate that distribution data provide only partial information on ecological range; growth in the field may be constrained by one or more factors and their interactions.Whereas analysis of field data is a correlative exercise, an experimental approach allows investigation of the physiological responses contributing to the survival of species and the demonstration of causal relationships.  相似文献

To calculate hepatic volume in the dog by single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT), we determined the limits of the organ by choosing an isocontour on each section. This choice entailed prior calculation of an overestimated pseudovolume. The accuracy of the measurement in the animal then approached that of measurements in vitro. We used the method to monitor hepatic regeneration in the dog after 65% hepatectomy and detected oedema and postoperative trauma, and over a longer timespan, stagnation of regeneration and a secondary drop in hepatic volume.  相似文献

r-and K-selection in soil ciliates: a field and experimental approach   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary Previously published field studies have suggested that the concept of r/K selection may be applied to terrestrial ciliates. A census was taken of the dominant groups, the Colpodea and Polyhymenophora, to determine species composition and absolute abundances in climatically unpredictable alpine and predictable lowland sites. In addition, two typical representatives of each of the two taxa (Colpoda aspera and Grossglockneria acuta, and Blepharisma undulans and Gonostomum affine, respectively) were selected for examination under laboratory conditions. Variables investigated were: the C/P index (ratio of Colpodea to Polyhymenophora), fertility, tolerance of altered environmental conditions, incidence in predictable or unpredictable biotopes, opportunism, competitive ability, and body size. Our own observations were supplemented by reference to the literature.The field census produced a higher C/P index in the unpredictable sites than in the predictable ones. The experiments show that C. aspera and G. acuta are less sensitive to changes in temperature and exhibit a more rapid rise in individual density as well as a higher number of individuals than do B. undulans and G. affine, although the former species have longer generation times at low temperatures. The explosive increase in number of individuals can be ascribed to the special reproductive strategy of the Colpodea (quadripartition in cysts). These results imply that the Colpodea are more r-selected as compared with the Polyhymenophora. That might be an explanation for their wide distribution and high density in unfavourable terrestrial habitats.  相似文献

Tissue glues are used during surgical treatment of acute aorta dissection although some glues release toxic products and thus alter the histological structure of the vessel wall. The aim of our study was to use a porcine experimental model of infrarenal aorta dissection to compare histological changes of the vessel wall 1, 6 and 12 months after application of BioGlue, Gelatin-resorcin-formaldehyde (GRF) glue and Tissucol. For quantification, stereological methods were used. All types of glue caused stenosis, GRF most and Tissucol least severely. With increasing postoperative survival time, stenosis was again reduced. Elastine length density decreased with increasing survival time in Control as well as in all Experimental groups. The immunohistochemical phenotype of vascular smooth muscle cells was similar in Tissucol and Control samples. In GRF samples, actin, desmin and vimentin expression changed most severely. Similarly, number and distribution of vasa vasorum in the aortic wall was altered most severely in GRF samples. They tended to return to normal with increasing postoperative survival time, but at a slow rate in the GRF samples. It can be concluded that GRF causes the most severe histopathological changes within the treated aorta, which could be a reason for late failures of dissection surgery. However, glue handling and adhesive properties have to be taken into account, too, when certain glue is chosen for surgical intervention. Increased inflammation and vascularisation might even stabilise the aortic wall. Long-term experimental studies would be helpful to assess healing processes after initial disorganisation of the aortic wall structure.  相似文献

Information transfer among group members is believed to play an important part in the evolution of coloniality in both birds and bats. Although information transfer has received much scientific interest, field studies using experiments to test the underlying hypotheses are rare. We used a field experiment to test if communally breeding female Bechstein's bats (Myotis bechsteinii) exchange information regarding novel roosts. We supplied a wild colony, comprising 17 adult females of known relatedness, with pairs of suitable and unsuitable roosts and monitored the arrival of individuals marked with transponders (PIT-tags) over 2 years. As expected with information transfer, significantly more naive females were recruited towards suitable than towards unsuitable roosts. We conclude that information transfer about roosts has two functions: (i) it generates communal knowledge of a large set of roosts; and (ii) it aids avoidance of colony fission during roost switching. Both functions seem important in Bechstein's bats, in which colonies depend on many day roosts and where colony members live together for many years.  相似文献

Rhythmical structure of forced swimming was studied on rats. Reserpine (1 mg/kg, 24 h before testing), clonidine (150 mkg/kg) and prolonged repeated striatal stimulation induced behavioural depression with reorganization of swimming rhythm and increase of short cycles (less than 6 s) of immobility. After chronic administration of antidepressants (imipramine, amitriptyline, niamid, 10 mg/kg/day, during 14 days), on the contrary, the number of these cycles diminished, while the number of active swimming cycles increased. Chrono-biological "index of depression" is suggested to express more exactly behavioural depression and specific activity of antidepressants than usual registration of immobility time.  相似文献

Changing skewness: an early warning signal of regime shifts in ecosystems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Empirical evidence for large-scale abrupt changes in ecosystems such as lakes and vegetation of semi-arid regions is growing. Such changes, called regime shifts, can lead to degradation of ecological services. We study simple ecological models that show a catastrophic transition as a control parameter is varied and propose a novel early warning signal that exploits two ubiquitous features of ecological systems: nonlinearity and large external fluctuations. Either reduced resilience or increased external fluctuations can tip ecosystems to an alternative stable state. It is shown that changes in asymmetry in the distribution of time series data, quantified by changing skewness, is a model-independent and reliable early warning signal for both routes to regime shifts. Furthermore, using model simulations that mimic field measurements and a simple analysis of real data from abrupt climate change in the Sahara, we study the feasibility of skewness calculations using data available from routine monitoring.  相似文献

Heritability characteristically shows large variation between traits, among populations and species, and through time. One of the reasons for this is its dependence on gene frequencies and how these are altered by selection and drift through the evolutionary process. We studied variation in heritability of tadpole growth rate in populations of the Swedish common frog, Rana temporaria. In populations evolving under warmer conditions, we have demonstrated elsewhere that tadpoles show better growth and physiological performance at relatively higher temperatures than tadpoles with an evolutionary history in a relatively cooler part of the distribution range. In the current study, we ask whether this process of divergence under natural selection has influenced the genetic architecture as visualised in estimates of heritability of growth rate at different temperature treatments under laboratory conditions. The results suggest that the additive genetic variance varies between treatments and is highest in a treatment that is common to both populations. Our estimates of narrow sense heritability are generally higher in the thermal regime that dominates in the natural environment. The reason for this appears not primarily to be because the component of additive genetic variation is higher in relation to the total phenotypic variation under these conditions, but because the part of the phenotypic variance explained by environmental variation increases at temperatures to which the current populations has been less frequently under selection.  相似文献

The application of stem cell therapy to cure degenerative diseases offers immense possibilities, but the research in this field is the subject of ethical debates raised by the question of destructive research on early human embryos. Stem cells taken in the adult constitute an alternative to human embryonic stem cells, but our knowledge on totipotent or pluripotent cells is currently insufficient. Furthermore, many questions must be solved before selection and differentiation of these cells in a given cellular type can be controlled on a routine basis. What are the molecular characteristics of an adult stem cell? What are the mechanisms involved in cell reprogramming? Which signals control stem cell replication and differentiation? Basic research activities must be carried out in order to clarify all these points. In this context, the regeneration of vertebrate appendages provides a model for this type of research. The regeneration process is defined by both the morphological and functional reconstruction of a part of a living organism, which has previously been destroyed. But why are some vertebrates able to regenerate complex structures and others apparently not? Among most vertebrates, the capacity to regenerate is limited to some tissues. It is however possible to observe the regeneration of appendages (limb, tail, fin, jaw, etc.) among several amphibians and fish. This regeneration leads to re-forming of the amputated part with a complete restoration of its shape, segmentation and function. Why is the amputation of limbs not followed by regeneration in mammals and birds: absence of stem cells, absence of recruitment signals for these cells, or absence of signal receptivity? This review constitutes a report on the current understanding of the basis of on regeneration of legs in tetrapods and of fins in fish with an emphasis in the role of the nervous system in this process.  相似文献

Analysis of variation in pheromone amounts and ratios between individuals is usually performed separately for amounts and ratios of the different components. Non-parametric tests are regularly applied. This way of analysis is statistically correct, yet, limited for several reasons. The use of a parametric linear mixed model approach to analyze both amounts and ratios of different components at the same time is proposed. This method appears to be very flexible and may facilitate the analysis of pheromone data.  相似文献

This study was to describe and compare the physiological demands of ultra-endurance cyclists during a 24 h cycling relay race. Eleven male athletes (means +/- SD: 34.8 +/- 5.6 years; 71.6 +/- 4.9 kg; 174.6 +/- 7.3 cm; BMI 23.5 +/- 0.5 kg/m2; VO2 max: 66.0 +/- 6.4 ml/kg/min) participated in the study; eight in teams with a format of four riders (4C) and three in teams with six riders (6C). To investigate exercise intensity, heart rate (HR) was recorded while cycling using portable telemetric monitors. Three different exercise intensities were defined according to the reference HR values obtained during a pre race laboratory incremental VO2 max test: Zone I (< anaerobic threshold [AT]), Zone II (between AT and the respiratory compensation point [RCP]), Zone III (> RCP). Total volume and intensity were integrated as a single variable (training impulse: TRIMP). The score for TRIMP in each zone was computed by multiplying the accumulated duration in this zone by a multiplier for this particular zone of exercise intensity. The average intensity did not differ between cyclists in 4C (means +/- SD; 4C: 87 +/- 3 HRmax) and 6C (87 +/- 1% of HRmax), despite the higher volume performed by 4C (means +/- SD; 4C: 361 +/- 65; 6C: 242 +/- 25 per min; P = 0.012). These differences in total exercise volume significantly affected the values TRIMP accumulated (means +/- SD; 4C: 801 +/- 98, confidence interval [CI] 95%: 719 - 884; 6C: 513 +/- 25, CI 95%: 451 - 575; P = 0.012). The ultra-endurance threshold of 4C and 6C athletes lies at about 87% of HRmax for both. Although the intensity profile was similar, the TRIMP values differed significantly as a consequence of the higher volume performed by the 4C cyclists.  相似文献

A multidisciplinary approach to the study of peripheral nerve regeneration in the cat has been presented. The purpose of this work has been to determine if pulsing electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy can enhance peripheral nerve regeneration after injury. In equal groups of animals, two types of pulsing electromagnetic field treatment were compared with untreated controls. All animals underwent quantitative electrophysiologic and morphologic assessment at the area of injury. In addition, muscle fiber sizing in the periphery and retrograde labeling of anterior horn motoneurons with horseradish peroxidase were studied. Results have shown no statistical differences between the groups in electrophysiologic or morphologic parameters. However, in animals treated with a pulse-burst electromagnetic field there was a statistically significant improvement in the labeling and localization of anterior horn cells in the central nervous system. These results indicate that pulse-burst electromagnetic radiation can increase the numbers of motor neurons that reestablish appropriate connections to the periphery after nerve injury. It remains to be seen if this improved spinal cord organization can translate to improved peripheral functional return.  相似文献

The analysis of large datasets describing reproductive isolation between species has been extremely influential in the study of speciation. However, the statistical methods currently used for these data limit the ability to make direct inferences about the factors predicting the evolution of reproductive isolation. As a result, our understanding of iconic patterns and rules of speciation rely on indirect analyses that have clear statistical limitations. Phylogenetic mixed models are commonly used in ecology and evolution, but have not been applied to studies of reproductive isolation. Here I describe a flexible framework using phylogenetic mixed models to analyze data collected at different evolutionary scales, to test both categorical and continuous predictor variables, and to test the effect of multiple predictors on rates and patterns of reproductive isolation simultaneously. I demonstrate the utility of this framework by re‐analyzing four classic datasets, from both animals and plants, and evaluating several hypotheses that could not be tested in the original studies: In the Drosophila and Bufonidae datasets, I found support for more rapid accumulation of reproductive isolation in sympatric species pairs compared to allopatric species pairs. Using Silene and Nolana, I found no evidence supporting the hypothesis that floral differentiation elevates postzygotic reproductive isolation. The faster accumulation of postzygotic isolation in sympatry is likely the result of species coexistence determined by the level of postzygotic isolation between species. In addition, floral trait divergence does not appear to translate into pleiotropic effects on postzygotic reproductive isolation. Overall, these methods can allow researchers to test new hypotheses using a single statistical method, while remedying the statistical limitations of several previous methods.  相似文献

Otolith growth-increment chronologies provide an approach for evaluating the impacts of both high-frequency (e.g., interannual) and low-frequency (e.g., interdecadal) climate variability on fish growth. A growth-increment biochronology spanning six decades, spanning several warm and cold climate regime periods, was developed for a commercially important species of rockfish, Sebastes polyspinis, in the Gulf of Alaska. To confirm that all increments were correctly identified and placed in time, we borrowed the technique of crossdating from the tree-ring science of dendrochronology, which ensured high data quality. We then used a mixed effects model to partition variance in otolith growth-increment width among intrinsic (e.g., age-related) and extrinsic (e.g., climate-related) factors. This biochronology was contrasted with one recently developed for S. alutus, a closely-related species which exhibited a significant change in growth following the late 1970s North Pacific climate regime shift. Both species generally showed positive relationships between warm climate conditions and growth, though S. polyspinis experienced a relatively smaller step-increase in growth following the regime shift. The new S. polyspinis otolith biochronology represents a long-term record of growth that extends well before biological specimens were first collected in the Gulf of Alaska, providing a potential tool for fisheries managers to evaluate the effects of climate variability on growth and biological reference points.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the problem of parameter identification in dynamic models of animal cultures, and we propose a step-by-step procedure, which gradually considers more detailed models. This procedure allows subsets of parameters to be estimated at each step, which can be used in the initialization of the next identification step. Finally, the full parameter set can be re-estimated starting from the results of the last step. The efficiency of the procedure is illustrated with a simulation case study and with the identification of a dynamic model from experimental data collected in CHO cell culture.  相似文献
