In a visual study of human and simian function of the shoulder joint, manifest superiority of the latter was noted. Comparative anatomical studies tend to confirm these observations and indicate that many common affections of the shoulder in humans may stem from incomplete evolutionary adaptation. Certain anatomical clues may lead to improvements in conservative and surgical treatment.A regimen of conservative and operative treatment developed over a period of many years has been found to be clinically effective for the relief of chronic refractory shoulder pain. These techniques differ at many points from present practices of a majority of physicians who deal with diseases of the shoulder.  相似文献

The fine structure of the female gonad of Varroa jacobsoni is described. There are two components: the ovary proper and the so-called lyrate organ. The ovary is the place where oocytes mature, embedded in a supporting tissue composed of two cell types: somacells 1 and somacells 2. The lyrate organ has a nutrimentary function and is comprised of two components: supporting cells and nutritive tissue. The supporting cells are similar to the somacells 2 in that they contain abundant microtubules. The nutritive tissue is an extensive syncytium. It is connected with the oocytes via intercellular bridges, the nutritive cords. Oocytes and nutritive tissue are thought to have derived from common stem cells. From fine structural evidence it is concluded that ribosomes are one of the most important components to be transported via the nutritive cords into the oocytes. However, an increase in number of mitochondria in the middle-stage oocytes may also be a consequence of transport of these organelles from the nutritive tissue into the oocytes. Further characteristics make plausible that the interdependences of oocytes and nutritive tissue are comparable to those found in meroistic ovarioles of insects. The somatic components do not seem to be as important as the follicle cells of insects, however. It is assumed that the evolution of a nutrimentary oogenesis speeds up embryogenesis. Thus, the differentiation of the female gonad of Varroa jacobsoni may have facilitated the species' adaptation to a development completed in a short and limited time within the shelter of the covered brood cell of the bee.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of the non halacarid littoral Acari on rocky shores was examined. The habitat of these Acari was investigated and compared with that of the Halacaridae. Some physiological factors were investigated to explain this distribution. Three ecologically distinct life styles were recognized among these Acari.  相似文献

Solifugae possess an evertable, adhesive pedipalpal organ (suctorial organ) at the tip of the distal tarsus of each pedipalp that is unique among arachnids. When inverted inside the pedipalp, the suctorial organ is covered with two cuticular lips, a dorsal upper lip and a ventral lower lip, but it can be protruded rapidly in order to facilitate grasping prey or climbing on bushes or even climbing on smooth surfaces due to its remarkable adhesive properties. In this study, the suctorial organs of different species from old world families Galeodidae and Karschiidae and new world families Ammotrechidae and Eremobatidae were investigated by means of light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In all representatives, the suctorial organ is formed by an evertable, cuticular pad with a complex internal stabilizing structure. The procuticle of this pad consists of a lattice-like basal plate and numerous stalked structures connected to this basal plate. The shafts of the stalked structures are regularly organized and ramify apically. The surface of the suctorial organ is constituted of a very thin epicuticle overlaying the ramifying apices forming ridges and furrows on the ventral side of the suctorial organ.  相似文献

The Hydrachnidia (water mites) represent the most important group of the Arachnida in fresh water. Over 6,000 species have been described worldwide, representing 57 families, 81 subfamilies and more than 400 genera. The article analyzes extant water mite diversity and biogeography. Data on distribution and species richness of water mites are substantial but still far from complete. Many parts of the world are poorly investigated, Oriental and Afrotropical regions in particular. Moreover, information among different freshwater habitats is unbalanced with springs and interstitial waters disproportionately unrepresented. Therefore, more than 10,000 species could be reasonably expected to occur in inland waters worldwide. Based on available information, the Palaearctic region represents one of the better investigated areas with the highest number of species recorded (1,642 species). More than 1,000 species have been recorded in each of the Neotropical (1,305 species) and Nearctic regions (1,025 species). Known species richness is lower in Afrotropical (787 species) and Australasian (694 species) regions, and lowest in the Oriental region (554 species). The total number of genera is not correlated with species richness and is distinctly higher in the Neotropical (164 genera); genus richness is similar in the Palaearctic, Nearctic and Australasian regions (128–131 genera) and is lower in the Afrotropical and Oriental regions with 110 and 94 genera, respectively. A mean number of about three genera per family occur in the Palaeartic, Nearctic and Oriental while an average of more than four genera characterizes the families of Australasian and Afrotropical regions and more than five genera those of the Neotropical. Australasian fauna is also characterized by the highest percentage of endemic genera (62%), followed by Neotropical (50.6%) and Afrotropical (47.2%) regions. Lower values are recorded for the Palaearctic (26.9%), Oriental (24.4%) and Nearctic (21.4%). The Palaearctic and Nearctic have the highest faunistic similarity, some minor affinities are also evident for the generic diversification of Holarctic and Oriental families. The faunas of Southern Hemisphere bioregions are more distinct and characterized by the presence of ancient Gondwanan clades with a regional diversification particularly evident in the Neotropics and Australasia. This scenario of water mite diversity and distribution reflect the basic vicariance pattern, isolation, phylogenetic diversification, recent climatic vicissitudes and episodes of dispersal between adjacent land masses together with extant ecological factors can be evoked to explain distribution patterns at a global scale. Feeding activity of a phthiracarid mite (Arachnida: Acari)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The oribatid mite, Phthiracarus sp., feeds by tearing-out material from the spongy mesophyll of decaying spruce needles with a pair of retractile chelicerae. A pair of dentate rutella localize this tearing activity and limit particles to a manageable size. Mastication is achieved by movements of the chelicerae against each other and the rutella, the process being aided by a pair of palps.  相似文献

Ecdysial cleavage lines of acariform mites (Arachnida, Acari)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Among mites the ancestral ecdysial cleavage line, or line of dehiscence (a), is inferred by outgroup comparison to be prodehiscent: U-shaped, passing around the front of the mite just above the insertions of the appendages, such that the mite ecloses anteriorly. From preserved and living individuals and exuviae, we found prodehiscence (or its slight variations) to be widespread in Acariformes. It appears to be pervasive in endeostigmatic mites, eupodine Prostigmata, and basal taxa in the Oribatida (Enarthronota, Palaeosomata); it is dominant in cleutherengone Prostigmata and is present in at least one anystine family (Caeculidae). Three general modes of dehiscence are considered to be derived within acariform mites. (1) Merodehiscence is a transverse splitting of the dorsal cuticle at or near the juncture of proterosoma and hysterosoma; it evolved separately in thrcc groups of Prostigmata (Tetranychidae, an undefined subgroup within Cheylctidae, and active instars of Parasitengona) and in a genus of Astigmata (Histiogaster). (2) Trarnsdehiscence is a transverse splitting of the dorsal hysterosomal cuticle anterior to the opisthosomal glands; it occurs in middle-derivative oribatid mites (the paraphyletic Desmonomata), and new observations show it to be widespread in Astigmata, lending support to the hypothesis that the latter group evolved from within Desmonomata. (3) Circumdehiscence is a circumferential splitting of the hysterosomal cuticle that may be incomplete anteriorly; it has long been known to characterize the monophyletic oribatid taxon Brachypylina, but it is convergent with a similar dehiscence in an unrelated family, Lohmanniidae. Transdehiscent and circumdehiscent mites eclose posteriorly. Astigmata exhibit the greatest variety of modes of dehiscence, including the three derived modes and a probable reversal to prodehiscence in Algophagidae. Furthermore, heteromorphic deutonymphs (hypopi) may ecdyse differently from other immature instars of the same species.  相似文献

On the basis of floral and vegetative morphology, 63 tropical American genera have been recognized within Maxillarieae. We were able to examine anatomical material of all subtribes, excluding Oncidiinae. Stegmata with conical silica bodies occur in leaves and stems of all subtribes excluding Ornithocephalinae, and pericyclic stegmata found in roots are characteristic of Lycastinae. Lycastinae and Maxillariinae are characterized by foliar glands, foliar fibre bundles and tilosomes. Endodermal cells are U-thickened in most Zygopetalinae; O-thickened in most Lycastinae, Ornithocephalinae and Telipogoninae; variously thickened in Maxillariinae; and thin-walled in Cryptarrhena lunata . Water-storage cells varied from thin-walled to variously banded throughout Maxillarieae. Cladistic analyses using anatomical characters yielded no resolution among subtribes, illustrating that anatomical characters are of limited value in assessing relationships within this tribe.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 251–274.  相似文献

Skeletal muscles in the whipspider Phrynus longipes are surveyed and compared with those of other chelicerates to clarify the evolutionary morphology and phylogenetic relationships of the arachnids. Representatives of 115 muscle groups are described and illustrated, and their possible functions are proposed. Principal results of this analysis include new functional models for the operation of the pharyngeal and sternocoxal mechanisms in Amblypygi and a greatly expanded list of apparently unique synapomorphies supporting the monophyly of Pedipalpi (= Amblypygi, Schizomida, Thelyphonida).  相似文献

During this study the frequency of occurrence and dominance of phytophagous and predatory mites harboring seven vegetable crops in Egypt, namely common bean, cowpea, eggplant, okra, squash, sweet pepper and sweet potato during 2017–2018 were investigated to identify predatory mites that might be useful for the biological control of the phytophagous mites. Three phytophagous and nine predatory mite species were surveyed. The two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch of the family Tetranychidae was the dominant pest on these vegetables, while phytoseiids Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias- Henriot), Typhlodromips swirskii (Athias- Henriot) and Euseius scutalis Chant were the dominant predators. The population of the native or indigenous phytoseiid mite fauna in Egypt such as Phytoseiulus persimilis could be considered as a good biocontrol agent and a part of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program in the future. Mite fauna of Egypt especially local populations of Phytoseiulus persimilis can be considered for implementation in future Integrated Pest Management (IPM).  相似文献

The ultrastructure of spermatophores was studied in seven species of Oribatei. Each spermatophore is composed of a head and a stalk which is attached to the substratum. The spherical head consists of two distinct portions: (1) the sperm package; and (2) the head matrix. Position and structure of the sperm package are described in the different species, as well as the various structures in the head matrix. The sperm package contains sperm embedded in secretory products. The most characteristic feature of the sperm is an electron-dense chromatin body. Mitochondria lie adjacent to it or are partly or completely incorporated into the chromatin body. The cytoplasmic surface of the plasma membrane regularly bears an electron-dense layer; the plasma membrane is covered by a secretory sheath. The spermatophores of the Oribatei are structurally complicated and not uniform. The possible role of the spermatophore's structural elements is discussed and an attempt is made to evaluate characteristic features taxonomically.  相似文献

Low temperature scanning electron microscopy (LT-SEM) has revealed anatomical details suggesting that Osperalycus and Gordialycus (Acariformes: Nematalycidae) have an unusual feeding apparatus that is hypothesized to be specialized for feeding on the fluid contents of small microorganisms (diameter < 5 μm). Both mite genera have a feeding strategy that appears to involve picking up small microorganisms and placing them onto the subcapitulum for puncturing. However, they have slightly different variants of the same basic rupturing mechanism. Whereas Gordialycus has evolved expansive and convergent rutella to hold the microorganisms in place while pushing chelicerae into them, Osperalycus has evolved a pouch into which a microorganism is inserted. The rutella reinforce this pouch while the chelicerae break up the microorganism. Both types of mouthpart apparatus seem to be adapted to minimize waste, an appropriate specialization given the organically impoverished habitats in which these mites live.  相似文献

A band of flexible cuticle encircles the deutonymph, separating the dorsal and ventral plates. The coxae are large, flat and fused with one another to form most of the ventor. Individual coxal margins are redefined as sternites, epimerites or simply apodemes according to which margins fuse with which others. A given area of cuticle may have patches of dark or light cuticle not corresponding to particular structures or cuticular contours; this is a source of confusion to taxonomists. Each leg has a dicondylic coxal-trochantal (adduction-abduction) and trochantal-femoral (promotion-remotion) joint with opposing muscles. The three more distal monocondylic joints (flexion-extension) have only flexor muscles; extension is by increased haemolymph pressure. The five apodemes of the sucker plate provide rigidity; the four suckers attach by a flexible cuticular ring to a solid flange or socket in the sucker plate. The sucker muscles attach to the center of each sucker. The flat, external face of the sucker plate apodemes may complement sucker action by adhesion. Coxal discs and sucker plate discs are identical, contain birefringent cuticular elements, and are considered modified setae. Functional mouthparts and a pharynx are lacking, but a cheliceral anlage is present. The esophagus, midgut and caecae, and malpighian tubules are lumenless and the cells small. The hindgut has a lumen, larger cells and opens externally via the anus. Whereas the digestive tract is regressed, the reproductive system is yet incompletely developed. In older deutonymphs anlagen of ducts, accessory glands and gonads are discernible. The nature of the haemocoel and peritoneum remains nuclear. The central nerve mass is conspicuously large for the size of the deutonymph. The supraesophageal ganglion gives rise to the cheliceral nerves; all other nerves arise from the subesophageal ganglion. Most major nerves were traced to the effector organs. The muscles are divided into leg, dorso-ventral (derived from coxal muscles), dorsal, sucker, and anogenital muscles. The trochantal adductor muscles originate on an endosternite, which is supported by muscles running to the dorsal hysterosoma. The dorso-ventral and propodosomal retractor muscles affect haemolymph pressure. The massive sucker retractor muscles are unique to this instar. Anogenital muscles are not well developed.  相似文献

Twelve mite species of the genus Macrocheles (Acari: Macrochelidae) were collected from the body surface of dung beetles in Java, Indonesia. Of these, three species, i.e., Macrocheles jabarensis, M. jonggolensis, and M. sukabumiensis, were described as new to science. Female of M. dispar was redescribed. Two species, i.e., M. baliensis and M. sukaramiensis, were recorded from Java for the first time. The occurrence of five species previously recorded from Java, i.e., M. hallidayi, M. kraepelini, M. limue, M. oigru, and M. merdarius, were reconfirmed. Taxonomic status of M. sp. aff. glaber was not settled in the present study, because we could not obtain the male and immatures which are indispensable for exact identification. In total 15 species of the genus Macrocheles, including 3 species already recorded but not collected in this research (M. crispa, M. krantzi, and M. subbadius), are known from Java up to date.  相似文献

Varroa destructor, a key biotic threat to the Western honey bee, has played a major role in colony losses over the past few years worldwide. Overuse of traditional acaricides, such as tau-fluvalinate and flumethrin, on V. destructor has only increased its tolerance to them. Therefore, the application of essential oils in place of traditional pesticides is an attractive alternative, as demonstrated by its high efficiency, lack of residue and tolerance resistance. To study the acaricidal activity of essential oils, we used clove oil (Syzygium aromaticum L.), a typical essential oil with a wide range of field applications, and examined its effects on the enzyme activities of Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and its effects on the water-soluble protein content of V. destructor body extracts after exposure to 0.1 μl and 1.0 μl of clove oil for 30 min. Our results showed that the water-soluble protein content significantly decreased after the treatments, indicating that the metabolism of the mites was adversely affected. The bioactivity of GSTs increased significantly after a low dosage (0.1 μl) exposure but decreased at a higher dosage (1.0 μl), while the activities of SOD and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase were significantly elevated after treatments. These results suggest that the protective enzyme SOD and detoxifying enzymes Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase and GST contributed to the stress reaction of V. destructor to the essential oils and that the detoxification ability of V. destructor via GST was inhibited at higher dosages. Our findings are conducive to understanding the physiological reactions of V. destructor to treatment with essential oils and the underlying mechanisms behind the acaricidal activities of these natural products.  相似文献

Reduviidae and some other groups of cimicomorphan Heteroptera possess a hairy attachment structure on the apex of the tibia called “fossula spongiosa”. The fossula spongiosa was never studied comparatively across Reduviidae, its fine structure and mode of function is not well documented, and attachment structures in immature stages are virtually unknown. Here, a sample of 171 species of Reduviidae representing 22 subfamilies is examined for presence-absence of the fossula spongiosa on the three pairs of legs. Representatives of 11 of the 22 subfamilies are shown to possess a fossula spongiosa. The fine structure of the fossula spongiosa is examined for a more limited sample of Reduviidae and several Pachynomidae and Nabidae. In addition, scanning micrographs for the fossula spongiosa in other Cimicomorpha are given, among them Anthocoridae, Cimicidae, Microphysidae (first record of a fossula spongiosa), and Thaumastocoridae. The fossula spongiosa in Reduviidae consists of tenent hairs (acanthae) with spatulate or tapering apices interspersed with sensory setae, both of which are embedded in a thick and flexible cuticle, underlain by a hemolymph cavity separated almost entirely from the interior of the remaining tibia by a cuticular invagination. Judging from comparison with non-reduviid Cimicomorpha, this separation of the fossula spongiosa cavity from the tibial interior may be unique to Reduviidae. A simple experiment using live specimens of Platymeris biguttata (Reduviinae) revealed a liquid on the tip of the tenent hairs that might be involved in the attachment of the fossula spongiosa by adhesion mechanisms. The nymphs of Reduviidae whose adults have a fossula spongiosa are here documented for the first time to possess pads of ventrally barbed setae instead of tenent hairs and their tibia lacks the internal cuticular invagination. The nymphal attachment structures seem to rely on increase of friction rather than the adhesion mechanism proposed to be present in the adult. Combined with the tenent setae on the third tarsomere known in some Emesinae and here documented for Saicinae, three types of hairy attachment structures occur on the legs of Reduviidae: tenent hairs (acanthae), which form the fossula spongiosa in many Reduviidae, barbed setae that substitute the fossula in the immatures, and tenent setae on the tarsus which are restricted to only a few taxa.  相似文献

Using SEM and TEM techniques, the trichobothria of Acrogalumna longipluma(Galumnidae, Pterogasterina) were studied in relation to a variety of other moss mites. Each sensillum is composed of a mostly solid bothridial seta and a very complex socket, the bothridium. The setal base bends sharply as it passes through the six chambers of the bothridium, which are arranged in an S-shaped configuration. The proximal end of the seta is an elongated oval and inserted into a thin socket membrane provided with radiating suspension fibres. This peculiar shape of the setal base proper and probably also the existence of connecting pieces are assumed to provide directionality to the sensillum. Two differently shaped tubular bodies are found under the setal base, of which only one is in contact with the seta. The tubular bodies are surrounded by peculiar ‘dense tubes’, i.e. derivatives of the dendritic sheath. The rather thick, outer dendritic segments curve through an extensive receptor lymph cavity and terminate with ciliary regions. The inner dendritic segments are only short. Perikarya and axons as well as the enveloping cells do not show any peculiarities. The trichobothria of moss mites most probably represent vibration receptors reacting to substrate and/or air-borne stimuli. The variety of shapes and the complexity, which is not found to this extent in any other arthropod group, are discussed in relation to ecophysiological demands.  相似文献

Background

Centrosaurine ceratopsids are well known from the middle Campanian Upper Two Medicine Formation of Montana. Four taxa have been named: Brachyceratops montanensis, Rubeosaurus ovatus, Einiosaurus procurvicornis, and Achelousaurus horneri. Rubeosaurus has been historically the most enigmatic of these taxa; only two specimens, the holotype caudal parietal bar and a referred incomplete skull, have been assigned to Rubeosaurus.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A revised interpretation of the parietal processes of USNM 14765, the partial skeleton of a subadult centrosaurine formerly referred to Brachyceratops, indicates that it shares a P5 spike with the holotype of Rubeosaurus ovatus and should therefore be referred to that taxon. Brachyceratops is considered a nomen dubium.

Conclusions/Significance

USNM 14765 provides additional anatomical information for Rubeosaurus ovatus. These new data are incorporated into a recent phylogenetic analysis of centrosaurine relationships; Rubeosaurus appears as the sister taxon of a clade composed of Einiosaurus, Achelousaurus, and Pachyrhinosaurus.  相似文献
