Four species of Stigeoclonium from Argentina were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy and light microscopy. For species identification, we collected data related to the prostrate system and zoospore germination. We also determined the chromosome number for each species. Stigeoclonium aestivale showed a more developed erect system than the prostrate one, zoospore germination was predominantly of erect type and the chromosome number was 8. Stigeoclonium tenue presented well developed, erect and prostrate systems, zoospore germination was initially of the prostrate type and the chromosome number was 5. In Stigeoclonium variabile the prostrate system predominated over the erect one, zoospore germination was strictly of the prostrate type and the chromosome number was 3. Stigeoclonium farctum presented a more developed prostrate system than the erect one, zoospore germination was strictly of the prostrate type and the chromosome number was 8. The ontogeny of the zoospore germination was related to the final relative development of the prostrate and erect portions of adult thalli.  相似文献

Three different bioassays, two culture tube test methods with respectively Stigeoclonium tenue or Scenedesmus quadricauda and one bottle test with S. quadricauda, were compared. The yields obtained in the various tests were linearily correlated (r = 0.86, P < 0.001). The same primary limiting nutrient was indicated by the bioassays in most cases. However the algal growth in the tube test using Stigeoclonium was more often P-limited. In the case of S. quadricauda both test methods (tube and bottle) were nearly equally effective. The yields of N-limited samples were significantly correlated with the inorganic-N as well as total-N concentration of the water sample. A significant correlation of the ortho-P as well as total-P concentration with the yield of the P-limited assays was only found for Stigeoclonium tenue. The critical total N/P ratio (by weight) for N or P limitation was approximately 17: 1 for Stigeoclonium tenue and 22: 1 for Scenedesmus quadricauda.  相似文献

The effects of different pretreatments on the chemical properties of test waters and their effects on bioassays using Stigeoclonium helveticum Vischer were evaluated. All treatments removed or destroyed indigenous algae, and in addition each method altered the water chemistry. Filtration removed 78–98% of the iron, and up to 20% of the total phosphorus concentration; autoclaving caused precipitation of salts and removed up to 20% of total phosphorus. The effect was enhanced up to 60% when a combination of both methods was applied. The inorganic nitrogen concentration did not alter significantly. The various sample treatments changed the availability of the limiting nutrients. This was manifested in the bioassays using Stigeoclonium helveticum.  相似文献

The treatment of vegetative cells ofStigeoclonium pascheri with caffeine delayed the initiation of sporulation and decreased the percentage sporulation. We investigated the independent and interactive effects of nutrient enrichment and snail grazing on structuring periphyton communities in a northern temperate lake. Nutrient releasing substrates and grazer enclosures were used to simultaneously manipulate nutrient availability and herbivory. Periphyton was allowed 18 days to accrue before grazers (Elimia livescens = Goniobasis livescens) were introduced.Addition of nitrogen and phosphorus caused a significant increase in biovolume (p < 0.001), whereas grazing had no significant effect on biovolume but resulted in a shift in species composition. Four taxa were largely responsible for the increase in biovolume on the nutrient enriched substrates: Oedogonium sp, Stigeoclonium tenue, Navicula radiosa var. radiosa and Navicula radiosa var. tenella. By the 28th day, nutrient enrichment caused a shift from a community dominated by diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) to a community dominated by green algae (Chlorophyceae). Blue green algae (Myxophyceae) maintained an equal proportion in high and low-nutrient regimes.Grazing had a more pronounced effect on altering community composition on the nutrient enriched substrates than on the unenriched substrates. Grazing caused a decrease in diversity and an increase in dominance by green algae on the nutrient enriched substrates. The relative biovolume of green algae increased from 64% to 93% on grazed substrates, due to the significant increase in relative abundance of Stigeoclonium tenue. This taxon has both prostate basal cells and erect filamentous cells. The ratio of basal: filamentous cells increased from 4.7 to 5.2 with grazing, suggesting that the heretotrichous growth form of Stigeoclonium tenue is adapted to grazing by virtue of the basal cells which are able to adhere to the substratum and resist being grazed.  相似文献

Two populations of Chaetophora elegans (Roth) C. Agardh and two of Stigeoclonium helveticum Vischer were investigated for microhabitat characteristics and morphological variation in streams of São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. Different patterns of microhabitat distribution were found between species investigated. Populations of C, elegans were distributed under relatively narrow microhabitat conditions (high irradiance, low depth, moderate to high current velocity, rocky substrata and lower values of niche width) and showing little morphometric variation (colony diameter, main axis cell size, and apical branch number), Stigeoclonium helveticum occurred under more diverse microhabitat conditions, revealed by lack of significant difference between sampling units with and without the alga and wider niche width, but also exhibited relatively narrow morphometric variation (plant length, main axis cell and ateral branch cell sizes). The narrow microhabitat conditions and smaller niche width of C. elegans can explain its low abundance (percentage cover) in streams from the area studied as well as in other regions of São Paulo State, In contrast, the wider variation of microhabitat conditions and the higher niche widths of S. helveticum suggest that this green alga is able to grow in a high number of stream ecosystems in the region investigated, ranging from undisturbed to highly disturbed habitats. Thus. the results suggest that S. helveticum is a generalist species.  相似文献

A preliminary survey of the benthic fauna of sites on the Nent system affected by elevated zinc levels, acid water and organic enrichment is described. Data on faunal composition are presented for 17 sites. A clustering technique was applied to the taxa/site matrix to demonstrate the degree of association between sites varying in zinc concentration. Chandler biotic scores were found to be lowest at sites affected by high zinc levels and/or dense growths of the alga Stigeoclonium tenue. The role of elevated zinc levels and algal growth in determining the diversity and abundance of benthos is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of herbivore size and hunger level were tested on lotic periphyton community structure and ash-free dry mass (AFDM). My hypotheses were 1) that small herbivores would remove more periphyton per unit biomass than large herbivores of the same species because of energetic demands and 2) that within the same size class, starved herbivores would remove more periphyton than nonstarved herbivores. The herbivore used was the prosobranch snail Elimia clavaeformis Lea. Seven treatments were employed: 1) no snails (control); 2) small “starved” snails; 3) large “starved” snails; 4) small and large “starved” snails; 5) small fed snails; 6) large fed snails; and 7) small and large fed snails. Although snails removed significant amounts of periphyton AFDM relative to controls, neither snail size nor degree of starvation had a significant effect on loss of total AFDM. Small snails removed significantly more erect forms of Stigeoclonium tenue (C. A. Ag.) Kütz. than large snails, but snail size had no other significant effect. Starved snails removed significantly more Cocconeis placentula Ehr. than fed snails, suggesting that after the more susceptible growth forms (e.g. erect Stigeoclonium) were removed, Cocconeis cells became more vulnerable to grazing by hungry snails. When small and large snails were combined in chambers, large snails gained weight over time, whereas small snails lost weight. These results suggest that intraspecific competition may occur within populations of Elimia.  相似文献

Effects of current velocity and light energy on the taxonomica and physiognomic characteristics of periphyton assemblages were investigated in laboratory streams. The initial rate of colonization was related to current velocity, while the effects of light energy accounted for differences in species composition by the end of the experiment. Although the laboratory systems had many species in common during the realy stages of colonization, the experimental treatments generated differences in rates of communitydevelopment. synedra spp. were the early coloniters of the substrate, followed by an understory of Achnanthes spp. After day 16, Stigeoclonium tenue developed in the streams exposed to the higher photon flux density, but was rare in the shaded streams. The applicability of traditional successional theory to develoopmental patterns in lotic periphyton assemblages is discussed.  相似文献

Schizomeris leibleinii Kütz. was found as an ecophene of Stigeoclonium tenue (Ag.) Kütz. in Centennial Lake, Palmerston North, New Zealand. The Schizomeris form occurred in autumn when the water was polluted by a large number of ducks. Sampling of the plant population of the lake and culture work showed that S. tenue has a high degree of polymorphism. Other forms of it which developed both in the lake and in culture were indistinguishable from Protoderma Kütz. emend. Borzi, from Uronema Lagerheim, or from Pearsoniella Fritsch and Rich, respectively.  相似文献

Mitosis, cytokinesis, and cellular organization during interphase are described. Interphase cells possess a single microbody-like organdie which occurs between, and is appressed to, the chloroplast and nucleus. The microbody-like organelle divides during mitosis and. the division of the chloroplast. Anaphase is unusual in that chromosome-to-spindle pole distance remains constant even though the 2 groups of chromosomes become widely separated. When anaphase is half completed, a vacuole forms in the interzonal region and appears to be involved in further separation of the chromosomes. Vacuolar development is also involved with events of early interphase. The cytology of K. flaccidum is compared to those of Ulothrix fimbriata and Stigeoclonium helveticum. The comparison, does not support the present classification of the 3 species, and indicates the value of comparative fine structural studies in the classification of ulotrichalean algae.  相似文献

The order Chaetophorales includes filamentous green algae whose taxonomic relationships to other chlorophycean orders is uncertain. Chaetophoralean taxa include filamentous species which are both branched and unbranched. Ultrastructural studies of zoospores have revealed similar flagellar apparatuses in a number of genera, including Uronema, Stigeoclonium, and Fritschiella, suggesting a close phylogenetic relationship among these taxa. The order Oedogoniales represents a second group of branched and unbranched filamentous green algae whose relationships to other chlorophycean orders also has been unclear. A possible close relationship between the Chaetophorales and Oedogoniales has been suggested. Using DNA sequences from the small-subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rRNA) of several members of each order, we have examined the monophyly of the Chaetophorales and Oedogoniales, as well as the nature of their relationship to other chlorophycean orders. Our results show that chaetophoralean and oedogonialean taxa form separate monophyletic groups. Results also suggest that the two orders are not closely related to each other.  相似文献

This investigation describes the cytology of the ulotrichalean genera Ulothrix and Stigeoclonium. Cellular organization is similar to the degree that interphase cells of the 2 genera cannot be distinguished with certainly. In Stigeoclonium, the nuclear envelope becomes disrupted at the end of prophase, and centrioles enter the nucleoplasm. At metaphase the nuclear envelope is again intact, and some of the spindle tubules appear to be contiguous with the nuclear envelope. The spindle in Ulothrix is essentially open with, no attachment of spindle tubules to the nuclear envelope and with, centrioles on the spindle-cytoplasm interface at the spindle poles. Spindle poles are blunt in Stigeoclonium and pointed in Ulothrix. Cytokinesis is by cell plate formation in both genera, but there is no phragmoplast.  相似文献

Attached algal populations were sampled at weekly or biweekly to characterize successional changes in the secondary clarifiers of a wastewater treatment plant. Three communities were compared from areas of slow, medium and rapid current velocities. In general, the algae resembled those reported for other hypereutrophic flowing water. Of the twenty-three algae recorded, Stigeoclonium, Oedogonium, Oscillatoria, Lyngbya, and Pleurocapsa were dominant at some point in the 15 month sampling period. Nutrient concentrations were consistently high (N = 1.1–21.4 mg·L−1; P = 0.1–10.4 mg·L−1); therefore, changes in temporal distribution of algae were probably dependent on seasonal changes in light and temperature. Colonization of artificial substrates was also observed. Small unicellular algae were the first autotrophs to attach and these were followed by larger filamentous forms.  相似文献

Division and plastic remodelling of the highly differentiated chromatophore inStigeoclonium stagnatile (Hazen)Collins is followed in living cells during their life cycle. In contradistinction to the unicellular algae both processes are separated: During the cell division, when the cell is growing, the highly differentiated chromatophore is simply divided without plastic remodelling and its division is finished before the nuclear division starts. The mode of the chloroplast division is identical with that of other algae. In contrast, during zoospore formation plastic remodelling of the chromatophore takes place: The lobed gutter-shaped chromatophore is transformed into a cup-like one which is adapted to the shape of the zoospore. After the zoospore has changed into a germling the cupshaped chromatophore is turned again into the original lobed gutter-like form of the vegetative cells. The precursory chromatophore division with regard to mitosis as well as the uniform mode of chromatophore division in various algae is stressed.

Quadriflagellate zoospores ofChaetophora incrassata andPseudoschizomeris caudata have similar features including an appressed membrane between the pyrenoid matrix and the starch sheath, and identical flagellar apparatuses. Components of the flagellar apparatus include: directly opposed upper basal bodies, lower basal bodies in the clockwise absolute orientation, a grooved distal fiber, peripheral and terminal fibers between adjacent basal bodies, proximal fibers connecting the lower basal bodies to the X-membered rootlets two- and X-membered rootlets associated with electron-dense components, and at least one rhizoplast. The X-membered rootlets, are comprised of five microtubules inC. incrassata and four or five inP. caudata. These features of the flagellar apparatus suggest that the two algae are closely related, and together withStigeoclonium, Uronema, Draparnaldia andFritschiella, form a natural group, the Chaetophoraceae, Chaetophorales (sensu Mattox and Stewart).  相似文献

The diplobiontic–haplodiplontic life cycle with alternating isomorphic generations in Stigeoclonium tenue (C. Agardh) Kütz. is described for the first time. Sporophytes (2n = 10) arise from tetraflagellate zoospores that are produced by meiosis. Sporic meiosis might be inferred from the cruciform divisions formed during zoosporogenesis and is confirmed through observations of prophase I substages. Zoospores do not germinate directly but produce a haploid cyst that germinates to give rise to a gametophyte (n = 5). Gametophytes produce biflagellate isogametes, which fuse to produce zygotes that germinate by mitosis into the sporophytic stage. Gametophytes and sporophytes reproduce asexually both via mitotic tetraflagellate zoospores and by thallus fragmentation. Results from this study indicate that both the cosmopolitan distribution and dominance of S. tenue in many periphytic communities might be due to its multiple reproductive strategies.  相似文献

The present communication deals with the morphology, reproduction and cytology of Stigeoclonium pascheri (formerly described as Caespitella pascheri Vischer). Effects of various concentrations of nitrate and variations in intensity and duration of light period in 24 hr LD cycles were studied on cultures of this alga in relation to the type and extent of branching and occurrence or absence of hair formation. It is concluded that these traits are not of taxonomic significance and are influenced largely by environmental conditions. The present study shows a large overlapping of morphological characters between the genera Stigeoclonium and Caespitella and supports Cox & Bold's abandonment of the latter generic name and its merger into the genus Stigeoclonium. The chromosome number determined for this alga is n = 6 which indicates that the Indian strain of this alga is a distinct cytotype from the one originally isolated by Vischer.  相似文献
