Trunk muscle electromyography (EMG) is often contaminated by the electrocardiogram (ECG), which hampers data analysis and potentially yields misinterpretations. We propose the use of independent component analysis (ICA) for removing ECG contamination and compared it with other procedures previously developed to decontaminate EMG. To mimic realistic contamination while having uncontaminated reference signals, we employed EMG recordings from peripheral muscles with different activation patterns and superimposed distinct ECG signals that were recorded during rest at conventional locations for trunk muscle EMG. ICA decomposition was performed with and without a separately collected ECG signal as part of the data set and contaminated ICA modes representing ECG were identified automatically. Root mean squared relative errors and correlations between the linear envelopes of uncontaminated and contaminated EMG were calculated to assess filtering effects on EMG amplitude. Changes in spectral content were quantified via mean power frequencies. ICA-based filtering largely preserved the EMG's spectral content. Performance on amplitude measures was especially successful when a separate ECG recording was included. That is, the ICA-based filtering can produce excellent results when EMG and ECG are indeed statistically independent and when mode selection is flexibly adjusted to the data set under study.  相似文献

It was recently proposed that one could use signal current instead of voltage to collect surface electromyography (EMG). With EMG-current, the electrodes remain at the ground potential, thereby eliminating lateral currents. The purpose of this study was to determine whether EMG-currents can be recorded in Tap and Salt water, as well as in air, without electrically shielding the electrodes. It was hypothesized that signals would display consistent information between experimental conditions regarding muscle responses to changes in contraction effort. EMG-currents were recorded from the flexor digitorum muscles as participant’s squeezed a pre-inflated blood pressure cuff bladder in each experimental condition at standardized efforts. EMG-current measurements performed underwater showed no loss of signal amplitude when compared to measurements made in air, although some differences in amplitude and spectral components were observed between conditions. However, signal amplitudes and frequencies displayed consistent behavior across contraction effort levels, irrespective of the experimental condition. This new method demonstrates that information regarding muscle activity is comparable between wet and dry conditions when using EMG-current. Considering the difficulties imposed by the need to waterproof traditional bipolar EMG electrodes when underwater, this new methodology is tremendously promising for assessments of muscular function in aquatic environments.  相似文献

Twelve male subjects were tested to determine the relationship between motor unit (MU) activities and surface electromyogram (EMG) power spectral parameters with contractions increasing linearly from zero to 80% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Intramuscular spike and surface EMG signals recorded simultaneously from biceps brachii were analyzed by means of a computer-aided intramuscular MU spike amplitude-frequency (ISAF) histogram and an EMG frequency power spectral analysis. All measurements were made in triplicate and averaged. Results indicate that there were highly significant increases in surface EMG amplitude (71 +/- 31.3 to 505 +/- 188 microV, p less than 0.01) and mean power frequency (89 +/- 13.3 to 123 +/- 23.5 Hz, p less than 0.01) with increasing force. These changes were accompanied by progressive increases in the firing frequency of MU's initially recruited, and of newly recruited MU's with relatively larger spike amplitudes. The group data in the ISAF histograms revealed significant increases in mean spike amplitude (412 +/- 79 to 972 +/- 117 microV, p less than 0.01) and mean firing frequency (17.8 +/- 5.4 to 24.7 +/- 4.1 Hz, p less than 0.01). These data suggest that surface EMG spectral analysis can provide a sensitive measure of the relative changes in MU activity during increasing force output.  相似文献

Peak torque, work, mean power and electromyographic (EMG) activity were recorded for each of 150 repeated isokinetic maximal shoulder flexions (45 degrees-90 degrees) in 23 healthy females. From the EMG signals of trapezius, deltoid, infraspinatus and biceps brachii the mean power frequency and the signal amplitude were determined in real time. The mechanical output showed a steep decrease during the first 40 contractions, followed by a plateau maintained until the end. In all muscles, except the biceps brachii, significant decreases in mean power frequency occurred during the first 40 contractions, showing a tendency to stabilize around the same absolute frequency value. Signal amplitude increased in the trapezius, the deltoid and the infraspinatus, but was constant in the biceps brachii. For some individuals rather high EMG activity was recorded in the muscles during the time the arm was supposed to be passively extended to the starting position, and this was found to be associated with lower strength and endurance levels. Longitudinal analyses showed that the mean power frequencies correlated better than the signal amplitudes with the three mechanical variables. The results suggest that the initial steep decrease in mechanical performance and mean power frequency is caused by fatiguing of type 2 motor units.  相似文献

The interpretation of the electromyogram (EMG) of dynamic contractions might be difficult because the movement per se introduces additional factors that could affect its characteristics. There is a lack of studies concerning the reproducibility of surface EMG registrations during dynamic contractions. The aim was to investigate the during-the-day reproducibility (using intra-class correlation; ICC) of the peak torque (PT) and the EMG variables (without removing the electrodes) of dynamic contractions. Ten healthy subjects performed three sets of 10 dynamic maximum right-knee extensions with a one-hour interval in between, using an isokinetic dynamometer and the PT was determined. EMG signals were recorded from the right vastus lateralis, rectus femoris and vastus medialis muscles using surface electrodes and the mean frequency of the power spectrum (MNF [Hz]) and the signal amplitude (RMS [microV]), were computed. The ability to relax in-between the maximum extensions was calculated as a ratio of the RMS during the passive flexion phase and the RMS during the active extension phase of each contraction cycle: the signal amplitude ratio (SAR). Both PT (ICC = 0.99) and RMS (ICC = 0.83-0.98) had good reproducibility. The reproducibility of MNF was good for all muscles when the mean of contraction nos.: 1-10 was used. Vastus lateralis had the highest ICC among the three muscles. The reproducibility of SAR was generally poor (ICC < 0.60). The present study showed good reproducibility for common EMG variables (MNF and RMS) obtained during maximum isokinetic contractions.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationships for mechanomyographic (MMG) amplitude, MMG mean power frequency (MPF), electromyographic (EMG) amplitude, and EMG MPF versus power output during incremental cycle ergometry. Seventeen adults volunteered to perform an incremental test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer. The test began at 50 W and the power output was increased by 30 W every 2 min until the subject could no longer maintain 70 rev min(-1). The MMG and EMG signals were recorded simultaneously from the vastus lateralis during the final 10 s of each power output and analyzed. MMG amplitude, MMG MPF, EMG amplitude, EMG MPF, and power output were normalized as a percentage of the maximal value from the cycle ergometer test. Polynomial regression analyses indicated that MMG amplitude increased (P<0.05) linearly across power output, but there was no change (P>0.05) in MMG MPF. EMG amplitude and MPF were fit best (P<0.05) with quadratic models. These results demonstrated dissociations among the time and frequency domains of MMG and EMG signals, which may provide information about motor control strategies during incremental cycle ergometry. The patterns for amplitude and frequency of the MMG signal may be useful for examining the relationship between motor-unit recruitment and firing rate during dynamic tasks.  相似文献

Intramuscular and surface electromyogram changes during muscle fatigue   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Twelve male subjects were tested to determine the effects of motor unit (MU) recruitment and firing frequency on the surface electromyogram (EMG) frequency power spectra during sustained maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and 50% MVC of the biceps brachii muscle. Both the intramuscular MU spikes and surface EMG were recorded simultaneously and analyzed by means of a computer-aided intramuscular spike amplitude-frequency histogram and frequency power spectral analysis, respectively. Results indicated that both mean power frequency (MPF) and amplitude (rmsEMG) of the surface EMG fell significantly (P less than 0.001) together with a progressive reduction in MU spike amplitude and firing frequency during sustained MVC. During 50% MVC there was a significant decline in MPF (P less than 0.001), but this decline was accompanied by a significant increase in rmsEMG (P less than 0.001) and a progressive MU recruitment as evidenced by an increased number of MUs with relatively large spike amplitude. Our data suggest that the surface EMG amplitude could better represent the underlying MU activity during muscle fatigue and the frequency powers spectral shift may or may not reflect changes in MU recruitment and rate-coding patterns.  相似文献

Capabilities of amplitude and spectral methods for information extraction from interference EMG signals were assessed through simulation and preliminary experiment. Muscle was composed of 4 types of motor units (MUs). Different hypotheses on changes in firing frequency of individual MUs, intracellular action potential (IAP) and muscle fibre propagation velocity (MFPV) during fatigue were analyzed. It was found that changes in amplitude characteristics of interference signals (root mean square, RMS, or integrated rectified value, IEMG) detected by intramuscular and surface electrodes differed. RMS and IEMG of surface detected interference signals could increase even under MU firing rate reduction and without MU synchronisation. IAP profile lengthening can affect amplitude characteristics more significantly than MU firing frequency. Thus, an increase of interference EMG amplitude is unreliable to reflect changes in the neural drive. The ratio between EMG amplitude and contraction response can hardly characterise the so-called 'neuromuscular efficiency'. The recently proposed spectral fatigue indices can be used for quantification of interference EMG signals. The indices are practically insensitive to MU firing frequency. IAP profile lengthening and decrease in MFPV enhanced the index value, while recruitment of fast fatigable MUs reduced it. Sensitivity of the indices was higher than that of indices traditionally used.  相似文献

Scapular kinematics alterations have been found following muscle fatigue. Considering the importance of the lower trapezius in coordinated scapular movement, this study aimed to investigate the effects of elastic taping (Kinesio taping, KT) for muscle facilitation on scapular kinematics of healthy overhead athletes following muscle fatigue. Twenty-eight athletes were evaluated in a crossover, single-blind, randomized design, in three sessions: control (no taping), KT (KT with tension) and sham (KT without tension). Scapular tridimensional kinematics and EMG of clavicular and acromial portions of upper trapezius, lower trapezius and serratus anterior were evaluated during arm elevation and lowering, before and after a fatigue protocol involving repetitive throwing. Median power frequency decline of serratus anterior was significantly lower in KT session compared to sham, possibly indicating lower muscle fatigue. However, the effects of muscle fatigue on scapular kinematics were not altered by taping conditions. Although significant changes were found in scapular kinematics following muscle fatigue, they were small and not considered relevant. It was concluded that healthy overhead athletes seem to present an adaptive mechanism that avoids the disruption of scapular movement pattern following muscle fatigue. Therefore, these athletes do not benefit from the use of KT to assist scapular movement under the conditions tested.  相似文献

Many previous studies were focused on the influence of anatomical, physical, and detection-system parameters on recorded surface EMG signals. Most of them were conducted by simulations. Previous EMG models have been limited by simplifications which did not allow simulation of several aspects of the EMG generation and detection systems. We recently proposed a model for fast and accurate simulation of the surface EMG. It characterizes the volume conductor as a non-homogeneous and anisotropic medium, and allows simulation of EMG signals generated by finite-length fibers without approximation of the current-density source. The influence of thickness of the subcutaneous tissue layers, fiber inclination, fiber depth, electrode size and shape, spatial filter transfer function, interelectrode distance, length of the fibers on surface, single-fiber action-potential amplitude, frequency content, and estimated conduction velocity are investigated in this paper. Implications of the results on electrode positioning procedures, spatial filter design, and EMG signal interpretation are discussed. Significance of skin temperature changes in surface electromyography.   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Differing results have been reported concerning the direction and quantity of the electromyogram (EMG) amplitude response to changes in tissue temperature. The EMG signals from the soleus muscle of six healthy human subjects were therefore recorded during dynamic exercise (concentric contractions) at ambient temperatures of 30 degrees C and 14 degrees C. The mean skin temperature (Tsk) above the muscle investigated was 32.9 degrees C and 21.7 degrees C, respectively. The core temperature, estimated by rectal temperature, was unchanged. The cooling of the superficial tissues caused approximately a doubling of the EMG amplitude. For the probability level 0.9 in the amplitude probability distribution function, the average signal level increased from 73 microV to 135 microV (P = 0.02). The average mean power frequency of the EMG signal was reduced from 142 Hz to 83 Hz (P = 0.004). The amplitude increase was not due to shivering but other possible explanations are presented. As the changes in Tsk investigated were within the range which may occur normally during the working hours, it was concluded that Tsk should be carefully controlled in vocational EMG studies.  相似文献

Many insects and other arthropods communicate using plant‐borne vibrational signals. Vibration transmission along plant stems imposes a frequency filter on signals, and may cause signal degradation from reflected waves. Furthermore, different plant species and plant parts can differ in their transmission properties. This variability in the communication channel may constrain the reliability of signals, with important consequences for the evolution of vibrational communication systems, as well as for researchers studying signal variation at an individual, population, or species level. In this study we estimate the magnitude of substrate‐related variation in the mate advertisement signals of a treehopper (Hemiptera: Membracidae: Umbonia crassicornis). We used laser vibrometry to record the signals produced by 25 adult males on two different plant species, one host and one non‐host. We recorded male signals on two plants per species; within each plant, signals were recorded simultaneously at two distances. We measured three spectral characteristics (dominant frequency, relative amplitude of the signals’ high and low frequency components, frequency at the end of the signal) and two temporal characteristics (signal duration and click repetition rate). Spectral characteristics were influenced by the distance at which the signal was recorded, and this influence varied among plant species and individuals. Temporal characteristics were less influenced, although signal length was influenced by distance, an effect that varied among individual plants. Overall, the magnitude of the effects was small. Furthermore, there was significant within‐individual repeatability of almost all signal traits across different plant substrates. Signal characteristics were thus reliably associated with individuals, even when they signaled on different plants.  相似文献

The effect of repeated maximal effort isotonic contractions on electromechanical delay was studied. Over 4 days, 17 male subjects performed 400 rapid elbow flexion trials. The kinematics and surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of the biceps brachii of these subjects were recorded. The period from the onset of the EMG until the beginning of movement was defined as the electromechanical delay. The period from the beginning of movement until the end of the EMG was defined as the second component of the contraction. Over the 4 day period there was an increase in the speed of limb movement. The mean power frequency and the duration of the EMG during the electromechanical delay did not change, while the root-mean-square amplitude increased. The duration of the EMG during the second component of the contraction remained stable. The mean power frequency and the root-mean-square amplitude of the EMG during the second component of the contraction increased with the speed of limb movement. We conclude that the faster contractions were a result of changes in motor unit recruitment during the second component of the contraction, rather than in the electromechanical delay.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of interelectrode distance (IED) over the estimated innervation zone (IZ) for the vastus lateralis muscle and normalization on the torque-related patterns of responses for electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) during concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic, and isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors. Eight men performed submaximal to maximal concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic, and isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors. Surface EMG signals were recorded simultaneously with two bipolar electrode arrangements in single differential configuration (20 and 40 mm IEDs) placed over the estimated IZ for the vastus lateralis muscle and a third electrode arrangement in single differential configuration (20 mm IED) placed distal to the estimated IZ. The results indicated that there were only a few (six of 90 statistical comparisons) significant (p < 0.05) mean differences among the three electrode arrangements for absolute EMG amplitude. There were no mean differences among the three electrode arrangements for absolute or normalized EMG MPF values or normalized EMG amplitude for the three types of muscle actions. Thus, it may be possible to reduce the potential influence of the IZ on amplitude and spectral parameters of the EMG signal through normalization.  相似文献

While much is known about the physiological basis of local muscular fatigue, little is known about the kinematic and electromyographic (EMG) consequences of brief fatiguing isometric contractions. Five male subjects performed a horizontal elbow flexion-extension reversal movement over 90° in 250 ms to reversal before and after one of five single maximal isometric elbow flexions ranging in duration from 15–120 s. Surface EMG signals were recorded from the biceps brachii, the long head of the triceps, the clavicular portion of the pectoralis major, and the posterior deltoid. Spatial and temporal errors were computed from potentiometer output. During the fatiguing bouts, maximum voluntary force dropped linearly an average of 4% in the 15 s condition and 58% in the 120 s condition relative to maximum force. The associated biceps rectified-integrated EMG signal increased from the onset of each fatigue bout for 15–30 s, then decreased over the remainder of the longer bouts. Following the fatigue bout, subjects undershot the target distance on the first movement trial in all conditions. Following short fatigue durations (i.e. 15–30 s), the peak biceps EMG amplitude was disrupted and movement velocity decreased, but both measures recovered within seconds. As fatigue duration increased, progressive decreases in peak velocity occurred with increased time to reversal, reduced EMG amplitude, and longer recovery times. However, the relative timing of the EMG pattern was maintained suggesting the temporal structure was not altered by fatigue. The findings suggest that even short single isometric contractions can disrupt certain elements of the motor control system.  相似文献

This paper focuses on methodological issues related to surface electromyographic (EMG) signal detection from the low back muscles. In particular, we analysed (1) the characteristics (in terms of propagating components) of the signals detected from these muscles; (2) the effect of electrode location on the variables extracted from surface EMG; (3) the effect of the inter-electrode distance (IED) on the same variables; (4) the possibility of assessing fatigue during high and very low force level contractions. To address these issues, we detected single differential surface EMG signals by arrays of eight electrodes from six locations on the two sides of the spine, at the levels of the first (L1), the second (L2), and the fifth (L5) lumbar vertebra. In total, 42 surface EMG channels were acquired at the same time during both high and low force, short and long duration contractions. The main results were: (1) signal quality is poor with predominance of non-travelling components; (2) as a consequence of point (1), in the majority of the cases it is not possible to reliably estimate muscle fiber conduction velocity; (3) despite the poor signal quality, it was possible to distinguish the fatigue properties of the investigated muscles and the fatigability at different contraction levels; (4) IED affects the sensitivity of surface EMG variables to electrode location and large IEDs are suggested when spectral and amplitude analysis is performed; (5) the sensitivity of surface EMG variables to changes in electrode location is on average larger than for other muscles with less complex architecture; (6) IED influences amplitude initial values and slopes, and spectral variable initial values; (7) normalized slopes for both amplitude and spectral variables are not affected by IED and, thus, are suggested for fatigue analysis at different postures or during movement, when IED may change in different conditions (in case of separated electrodes); (8) the surface EMG technique at the global level of amplitude and spectral analysis cannot be used to characterize fatigue properties of low back muscles during very low level, long duration contractions since in these cases the non-stable MU pool has a major influence on the EMG variables. These considerations clarify issues only partially investigated in past studies. The limitations indicated above are important and should be carefully discussed when presenting surface EMG results as a means for low back muscle assessment in clinical practice.  相似文献

Many algorithms have been described in the literature for estimating amplitude, frequency variables and conduction velocity of the surface EMG signal detected during voluntary contractions. They have been used in different application areas for the non invasive assessment of muscle functions. Although many studies have focused on the comparison of different methods for information extraction from surface EMG signals, they have been carried out under different conditions and a complete comparison is not available. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly review the most frequently used algorithms for EMG variable estimation, compare them using computer generated as well as real signals and outline the advantages and drawbacks of each. In particular the paper focuses on the issue of EMG amplitude estimation with and without pre-whitening of the signal, mean and median frequency estimation with periodogram and autoregressive based algorithms both in stationary and non-stationary conditions, delay estimation for the calculation of muscle fiber conduction velocity.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess differences in physiological tremor amplitude of the hand between the dominant and non-dominant side of right-handed individuals. Mechanical loading of the hand and frequency analysis were used in an attempt to identify the physiological mechanisms involved in observed differences. Seventeen healthy right-handed adults participated in a single session where physiological tremor of the outstretched left and right hands was recorded under different loading conditions (0 g up to 5614 g). Physiological tremor amplitude was quantified through accelerometry and electromyographic (EMG) signals of wrist extensor and flexor muscles were also recorded. The main findings were: ~30% greater amplitude of fluctuations in acceleration for the non-dominant compared with the dominant hand, no difference in the frequency content of acceleration or demodulated EMG signals between dominant and non-dominant sides across all loads, and condition-dependent associations between the amplitude of fluctuations in acceleration and EMG amplitude and frequency content. These associations suggest a potential role of central modulation of neural activity to explain dominance-related differences in physiological tremor amplitude of the hand.  相似文献

Researchers and clinicians routinely rely on interference electromyograms (EMGs) to estimate muscle forces and command signals in the neuromuscular system (e.g., amplitude, timing, and frequency content). The amplitude cancellation intrinsic to interference EMG, however, raises important questions about how to optimize these estimates. For example, what should the length of the epoch (time window) be to average an EMG signal to reliably estimate muscle forces and command signals? Shorter epochs are most practical, and significant reductions in epoch have been reported with high-pass filtering and whitening. Given that this processing attenuates power at frequencies of interest (<250 Hz), however, it is unclear how it improves the extraction of physiologically relevant information. We examined the influence of amplitude cancellation and high-pass filtering on the epoch necessary to accurately estimate the “true” average EMG amplitude calculated from a 28 s EMG trace (EMGref) during simulated constant isometric conditions. Monte Carlo iterations of a motor-unit model simulating 28 s of surface EMG produced 245 simulations under two conditions: with and without amplitude cancellation. For each simulation, we calculated the epoch necessary to generate average full-wave rectified EMG amplitudes that settled within 5% of EMGref. For the no-cancellation EMG, the necessary epochs were short (e.g., <100 ms). For the more realistic interference EMG (i.e., cancellation condition), epochs shortened dramatically after using high-pass filter cutoffs above 250 Hz, producing epochs short enough to be practical (i.e., <500 ms). We conclude that the need to use long epochs to accurately estimate EMG amplitude is likely the result of unavoidable amplitude cancellation, which helps to clarify why high-pass filtering (>250 Hz) improves EMG estimates.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between myosin heavy chain (MHC) composition, lactate threshold (LT), maximal oxygen uptake VO2max, and average muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) measured from surface electromyographic (EMG) signals during cycling exercise. Ten healthy male subjects participated in the study. MHC isoforms were identified from a sample of the vastus lateralis muscle and characterized as type I, IIA, and IIX. At least three days after a measure of LT and VO2max, the subjects performed a 2-min cycling exercise at 90 revolutions per minute and power output corresponding to LT, during which surface EMG signals were recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle with an adhesive electrode array. MFCV and instantaneous mean power spectral frequency of the surface EMG were estimated at the maximal instantaneous knee angular speed. Output power corresponding to LT and VO2max were correlated with percentage of MHC I (R2=0.77; and 0.42, respectively; P<0.05). MFCV was positively correlated with percentage of MHC I, power corresponding to LT and to VO2max (R2=0.84; 0.74; 0.53, respectively; P<0.05). Instantaneous mean power spectral frequency was not correlated with any of these variables or with MFCV, thus questioning the use of surface EMG spectral analysis for indirect estimation of MFCV in dynamic contractions.  相似文献
