Plants are able to compensate for loss of tissue due to herbivores at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, masking detrimental effects of herbivory on plant fitness at these scales. The stressing effect of herbivory could also produce instability in the development of plant modules, and measures of such instability may reflect the fitness consequences of herbivory if instability is related to components of plant fitness. We analyse the relationships between herbivory, developmental instability and production of female flowers and fruits of holm oak Quercus ilex trees by means of herbivore removal experiments. Removal of leaf herbivores reduced herbivory rates at the tree level, but had no effect on mean production of female flowers or mature fruits, whereas herbivory tended to enhance flower production and had no effect on fruit abortion at the shoot level. Differences in herbivory levels between shoots of the same branch did not affect the size and fluctuating asymmetry of intact leaves. These results indicate compensation for herbivory at the tree level and over-compensation at the shoot level in terms of allocation of resources to female flower production. Removal of insect herbivores produced an increase in the mean developmental instability of leaves at the tree level in the year following the insecticide treatment, and there was a direct relationship between herbivory rates in the current year and leaf fluctuating asymmetry the following year irrespective of herbivore removal treatment. Finally, the production of pistillate flowers and fruits by trees was inversely related to the mean fluctuating asymmetry of leaves growing the same year. Leaf fluctuating asymmetry was thus an estimator of the stressing effects of herbivory on adult trees, an effect that was delayed to the following year. As leaf fluctuating asymmetry was also related to tree fecundity, asymmetry levels provided a sensitive measure of plant performance under conditions of compensatory responses to herbivory.

Acorns of Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata Maxim. are often predated by small mammals and birds in natural forests. These animals not only eat the acorns during the acorn ripening season, but also cache and hoard most of the remaining acorns on the forest floor in the soil for their future use. These buried acorns form the main seed resource for regeneration. Burying depth is potentially important for germination and for seedling development. The effects of burying depth on germination and seedling development in relation to acorn size were studied in an experiment, in which acorns were planted at 6 cm-, 12 cm- and 18 cm-depth. The experimental results showed that fewer acorns germinated as burying depth increased. From the deeply buried acorns fewer seedlings emerged at later time than from those acorns buried less deeply. They appeared to have more difficulties to emerge above-ground than the seedlings from shallowly buried acorns. The deeply buried acorns and their seedlings also appeared to be more susceptible to rot. Acorn size did not significantly affect germination and emergence of the seedlings. As early emerged seedlings had longer developmental periods in their first growing season, and therefore grew better than the late emerged seedlings, seedlings from the shallowly buried acorns took the advantage.

Plants can reduce the fitness costs of granivory by satiating seed predators. The most common satiation mechanism is the production of large crops, which ensures that a proportion of the seeds survive predation. Nevertheless, satiation of small granivores at the seed level may also exist. Larger seeds would satiate more efficiently, enhancing the probability of seed survival after having been attacked. However, a larger seed size could compromise the efficiency of satiation by means of large crops if there were a negative relationship between seed size and the number of seeds produced by an individual plant. We analyze both types of satiation in the interaction between the holm oak Quercus ilex and the chestnut weevil Curculio elephas. Both crop size and acorn size differed strongly in a sample of 32 trees. Larger crop sizes satiated weevils, and higher proportions of the seeds were not attacked as crop size increased. Larger seeds also satiated weevil larvae, as a larger acorn size increased the likelihood of embryo survival. Seedling size was strongly related to acorn size and was reduced by weevil attack, but seedlings coming from large weeviled acorns were still larger. The number and the size of the acorns produced by individual trees were negatively related. Larger proportions of the crop were infested in oaks producing less numerous crops of larger acorns. However, contrary to expectations, these trees did not satiate more effectively at the seed level either. Effective satiation by larger acorns was precluded by larger multi-infestation rates associated to smaller seed crops, in such a way that the proportion of attacked seeds that survived did not vary among trees with different acorn sizes. These results highlight the need of considering satiation by means of large crops and large seeds in studies of predispersal seed predation. Long-term monitoring on individual oaks will help to assess whether there is a trade-off between the number and the size of the acorns and, if it existed, how it could condition the fitness consequences of both types of satiation.

The genetic basis of developmental stability, measured as asymmetry (fluctuating asymmetry in leaves), was analyzed in leaves and flowers of cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill) and atemoya (A. cherimola × A. squamosa). The individuals analyzed belonged to a controlled collection of cultivars (clones) that had previously been characterized by means of isozymes. We used a nested design to analyze the differences in asymmetry at several sampling levels: individual leaves and flowers, individual trees, and genotypes. The clonal repeatability of developmental stability was not significantly different from zero, thus suggesting the absence of heritability of the asymmetry for leaves and flowers under these environmental conditions. No relationship between asymmetry and individual heterozygosity was found, but leaf fluctuating asymmetry was significantly related to particular isozymic genes. Petal and leaf size showed a phenotypically plastic response to the exposure zone of the tree (mainly due to light). Leaf fluctuating asymmetry also showed such a plastic response. No significant correlation was found between asymmetry and any pomological characters (some of these being fitness related). Finally, the hybrid species (atemoya) did not show larger developmental instability than did the parental species (cherimoya). All these data show that cherimoya asymmetry reveals the random nature of developmental noise, with developmental stability for leaves being possibly related to specific chromosome regions, but with weak evidence for genotypic differences in developmental stability.

Directional asymmetry and the measurement of developmental instability
Three widely used methods of estimating fluctuating asymmetry may yield serious overestimates if directional asymmetry is present. When two sides of a bilateral trait grow at different rates, then the asymmetry variance (Var[l-r]) increases with size, even when developmental noise is nil. But the residual variance around a population's mean developmental trajectory is invariant with respect to size. Thus, it can be used as a measure of developmental instability. We introduce a measure of developmental instability, the residual variance (s2δ), obtainable from either a major axis regression, which is equivalent to a principal component analysis on l and r, or a general structural model. This residual variance can be estimated from directionally asymmetric or even antisymmetric traits. We present examples of developmental instability estimated from directionally asymmetric mandibles (house mouse) and leaves (soybean), and antisymmetric claws (fiddler crab).

ABSTRACT We are unaware of any previous studies to evaluate using a sweep net to estimate abundance of red oak acorns (Quercus spp.) after they fall from tree crowns, sink to the ground in flooded bottomlands (i.e., sound acorns), and become potential food for animals or propagules for seedlings. We placed known numbers of white-painted red oak acorns of 3 size classes and used a sweep net to recover them in a flooded hardwood bottomland in Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi, USA. We recovered large acorns 1.96 and 1.32 times more often than small and medium acorns, respectively. Mean recovery rate of all marked acorns across size and density classes was 34.0 ± 7.0% (SE, n = 9). Thus, sweep-net sampling for sound acorns in flooded oak bottomlands may yield negatively biased estimates of acorn abundance, and investigators should consider using correction factors.

Plants can enhance their seed viability and survival through reducing the fitness costs of herbivory by satiating seed predators at either plant or seed level, or both. The former satiates with production of large crops while the latter with large-sized seeds, enhancing the probability of seed survival. We analyzed both types of satiation in the interaction between the Quercus aliena and the weevil Curculio spp in 2 years with different crop size and acorn size. Larger crop size seemed to satiate less effectively weevils due to higher proportions of the seeds were attacked in oaks producing more crops of smaller acorns. However, prematurely abscission of infested acorns in large crop year might compensate this ineffectiveness. Larger acorns in lean year well satiated weevil larvae, as a larger acorn size increased the likelihood of embryo survival and seedling establishment. Although effective satiation by larger acorns would be negated by smaller seed crops, the proportion of attacked acorns that survived increased with large acorn size in lean year. These results highlighted the importance of annual variation in acorn size of Quercus aliena in satiating and defending weevil larval predations, consequently in successful seedling recruitment and establishment.

In trees, reproduction constitutes an important resource investment which may compete with growth for resources. However, detailed analyses on how growth and fruit production interact at the shoot level are scarce. Primary canopy growth depends on the development of current-year shoots and their secondary growth might also influence the number and size of fruits supported by them. We hypothesise that an enhanced thickening of current-year shoots is linked positively to acorn production in oaks. We analysed the effect of acorn production on shoot growth of two co-occurring Mediterranean oak species with contrasting leaf habit (Quercus ilex, Quercus faginea). Length and cross-sectional area of current-year shoots, apical bud mass, number of leaves and acorns, xylem and conductive area, number of vessels of acorn-bearing and non-bearing shoots were measured in summer and autumn. Nitrogen and carbohydrates analyses were also performed in stems and leaves of both shoot types. Stem cross-sectional area increased in acorn-bearing shoots when compared with non-bearing shoots for both species and such surplus secondary growth was observed since summer. In bearing shoots, the total transversal area occupied by vessels decreased significantly from basal to apical positions along the stem as did the xylem area and the number of vessels. Leaves of bearing shoots showed lower nitrogen concentration than those of non-bearing shoots. Carbohydrate concentrations did not differ in stems and leaves as a function of the presence of acorns. Such results suggest that carbohydrates may preferentially be allocated towards reproductive shoots, possibly through enhanced secondary growth, satisfying all their carbon demands for growth and reproduction. Our findings indicate that acorn production in the two studied oaks depends on shoot secondary growth.

Developmental instability is the result of random environmental perturbations during development. Its absence (developmental stability) depends on an organism's ability to buffer environmental disturbances. Both genotype and environment influence the phenotypic expression of developmental instability and it is susceptible to selection pressure. We studied developmental instability (as indicated by increased within-individual asymmetry of repeated traits) in vegetative and reproductive structures of three populations of Cistus ladanifer L. living in different soil substrates (serpentine, siliceous and contact zone) to detect tolerance to serpentine soils. Serpentine soils, characterized by high concentrations of heavy metals (Ni, Cr, and Co), low levels of Ca/Mg ratio and high water deficit, can adversely affect plant performance. In this study we demonstrated that asymmetry and within-plant variance were higher in the contact zone population than either the silica or serpentine populations, proving the adaptation of C. ladanifer to serpentine soils. Within-population estimates of developmental instability were concordant for both vegetative and reproductive traits. There was little or no within-individual correlation among estimates of developmental instability based on different structures, i.e., plants that had highly asymmetric leaves always had high developmental instability in translational symmetry. Radial asymmetry of petals was negatively correlated with petal size, especially in silica soil plants, providing evidence of selection for symmetric and large petals. While leaf size was positively correlated with absolute fluctuating asymmetry, suggesting selection for small or intermediate size leaves. Serpentine soils presented the largest foliar and floral traits, as well as shoot elongation, while silica soil plants had the smallest scores. On the contrary, aboveground plant biomass was larger in silica soil plants, while the contact zone plants had the lowest biomass.

Partial consumption of acorns by rodents, birds, and insects has been widely reported in various oak species. However, to what extent these partially eaten acorns contribute to the regeneration of oak trees is poorly understood. To date, there is limited knowledge of the effects of seed availability on partial consumption of acorns. Herein, we released tagged Quercus mongolica acorns in two consecutive years with different seed crops, to explore the probability of partial acorn consumption. We also placed simulated partially consumed acorns in the field to investigate their contribution to regeneration of white oak. Our results showed that more acorns were partially eaten in a good crop year than in poor crop year, reflecting an effect of predator satiation on acorn partial consumption by rodents at the population level. Partially eaten acorns were more likely to be damaged at the basal end, suggesting consistent consumption preferences of small rodents. Although, partially consumed acorns were less likely to be scatter-hoarded by small rodents, they germinated more rapidly than the intact acorns in the field, offsetting the negative effects of the non-buried deposition. Despite lower germination rates, lightly damaged acorns exhibited greater growth of roots and shoots, suggesting a compensatory response to partial acorn consumption. Partial consumption may spread predation pressure on acorns and thus appears to be much better for the plant than total consumption by seed-eating animals. Therefore, partially consumed acorns as dispersal leftovers may play a potential role in natural regeneration of Quercus mongolica, especially in mast years. However, this role and the underlying mechanisms of partial acorn consumption by rodents, birds, and herbivore insects need further investigation.

Acorn production varies considerably among oak (Quercus) species, individual trees, years, and locations, which directly affects oak regeneration and populations of wildlife species that depend on acorns for food. Hard mast indices provide a relative ranking and basis for comparison of within- and between-year acorn crop size at a broad scale, but do not provide an estimate of actual acorn yield—the number of acorns that can potentially be produced on a given land area unit based on the species, number, and diameter at breast height (dbh) of oak trees present. We used 10 years of acorn production data from 475 oak trees to develop predictive models of potential average annual hard mast production by five common eastern oak species, based on tree diameter and estimated crown area. We found a weak (R2 = 0.08–0.28) relationship between tree dbh and acorn production per unit crown area for most species. The relationship between tree dbh and acorn production per tree was stronger (R2 = 0.33–0.57). However, this is because larger-dbh trees generally have larger crowns, not because they have a greater capacity to produce more acorns per unit crown area. Acorn production is highly variable among individual trees. We estimated that dbh of at least 60 dominant or codominant oak trees per species should be randomly sampled to obtain an adequate representation of the range of dbhs (≥12.7 cm dbh) in a given forest area, and achieve precise estimates when using these equations to predict potential acorn production. Our predictive models provide a tool for estimating potential acorn production that land managers and forest planners can apply to oak inventory data to tailor estimates of potential average annual acorn production to different forest management scenarios and multiple spatial scales. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.

Quercus schottkyana is a dominant species of oak in the Asian evergreen broad-leaved forests in southwestern China but seedlings are uncommon and recruitment is rare. Annual acorn production by Q. schottkyana is variable and the acorns are exposed to a series of mortality risks. Understanding the factors that limit recruitment of the oak requires knowledge of the oak's life cycle from acorn production to germination and seedling establishment. In this study, we first tested the effects of acorn density on establishment of seedlings by placing batches of acorns at different densities throughout the study area. Second, we tested the effects of herbivores on seedling survival by erecting fences around both natural and transplanted seedling populations. Our results show that even though the rate of seedling establishment increases as acorn density increases (for 32-8000 acorns·m-2), survival rates of seedlings in the field were generally low (0-0.6%). We show that seedling recruitment of Q. schottkyana is mainly limited to the acorn stage where 88% of the acorns died from the combined effects of desiccation and predation by weevils (Curculio) and bark beetles (Coccotrypes sp.). Herbivory results in the death of some seedlings and consequently also affects the recruitment of seedlings of Q. schottkyana.

Blue oak (Quercus douglasii) is a deciduous tree species endemic to California that currently exhibits poor seedling survival to sapling age classes. We used common garden techniques to examine how genetic variation at regional and local scales affected phenotypic expression in traits affecting oak seedling growth and survival. Between-population variation was examined for seedlings grown from acorns collected from a northern, mesic population and a southern, xeric population. Within-population variation was examined by comparing seedlings from different maternal families within the mesic population. Acorns were planted into neighborhoods of an annual dicot (Erodium botrys), an annual grass (Bromus diandrus), and a perennial bunchgrass (Nassella pulchra). By varying the species composition of herbaceous neighborhoods into which acorns were planted, the interactive effects of competition and acorn germplasm source on phenotypic expression could also be examined. Potential maternal effects, expressed as variation in acorn size, were assessed by weighing each acorn before planting. Probability of seedling emergence increased significantly with acorn size in the xeric population but not in the mesic population. Similarly, the effect of acorn size on seedling leaf area, stem weight, and root weight was also population-dependent. At a within-population level, acorn size effects on seedling traits varied significantly among maternal families. In addition to acorn size effects, rates of oak seedling emergence were also dependent on an interaction of population source and competitive environment. Interactions between maternal family and competitive environment in the expression of seedling leaf characters suggest the possibility of genetic variation for plasticity in traits such as specific leaf area. Using carbon isotope discrimination () as an index of relative water-use efficiency (WUE), higher water use efficiency was indicated for oak seedlings grown in the annual plant neighborhoods compared to seedlings grown in the bunchgrass neighborhood. This trend may represent an adaptive plastic response because, compared to the bunchgrass neighborhood, soil water depletion was more rapid within annual plant neighborhoods.

Spatial associations of tree saplings with spiny or toxic plants in grazed woodlands are generally explained by associational resistance, i.e., protection against grazing via a well-defended neighbor. In this study, we tested whether directed seed dispersal and post-dispersal seed removal by wood mice are additional explanations for the observed spatial association between thorny shrubs and trees, hence before associational resistance. We performed three studies in grazed woodlands in the Netherlands to test this idea. Our first seed dispersal experiment with tagged acorns showed indeed that wood mice disperse acorns directed towards shrubs. The majority of these dispersed acorns were, however, consumed. Our second experiment revealed that post-dispersal removal of cached acorns was higher under shrubs than in grassland and under trees, but also indicated the importance of within-shrub position: shrub centers were faster depleted than shrub edges. Also the number of freshly emerged seedlings and older saplings differed between micro-habitats, being higher under trees and at shrub inner-edges than at shrub outer-edges, shrub centers, and in grassland. The spatial associations with shrubs got stronger with the age of saplings, which probably reflect accumulated grazing effects over time, being higher in the open than in shrubs. We conclude that directed acorn dispersal and post-dispersal acorn removal by wood mice are two additional explaining mechanisms for the spatial associations between thorny shrubs and trees in grazed woodlands, before associational resistance. Our findings change the view that large herbivores are the sole main drivers behind tree recruitment patterns in grazed woodlands.

Since the XIX century, there is a controversy about the existence of biennial maturation of the acorns in Quercus suber L. While some authors recognised biennial cycles as an adaptation to habitats with short vegetative periods, other authors discarded the biennial pattern. Successive flowering events from spring to autumn and annual acorn ripening are proposed as an explanation of the multiple acorn crops typical of Iberian forests. To clarify this discussion, the presence of annual and biennial acorns was assessed in seven cork oak stands, covering a wide range of environmental conditions. In each stand, 100 individuals were sampled once in spring and once in autumn. Biennial acorns were observed with variable frequencies in all populations. There was a significant and positive relationship between latitude and the percentage of trees with biennial acorns within northern and central populations. On the contrary, this trend was not significant among southern populations. The hypothesis that the presence of biennial acorns in Quercus suber is related to individual female flowering phenology was confirmed in four populations located in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula. Unregarding local differences in the distribution of phenological stages anticipated trees bore significantly less biennial acorns than delayed individuals of the same stand. This result is coherent with the idea that the length of the vegetative period plays a crucial role in the frequency of annual and biennial acorn ripening patterns. The relationship between annual and biennial ripening cycles and the multiple acorn crops is discussed.

Many researchers have studied the relationship between masting by trees and seed predation by insects. Most of these studies have been plant centered, with little focus on the insect perspective. To estimate the effect of mast seeding on insect seed predators, the life‐history traits of these insects must also be considered because some seed insects can survive lean years by prolonged diapause. In this study, I examined larval infestation of acorns and life‐history traits of the acorn weevil, Curculio robustus (Roelofs) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in relation to acorn production of the deciduous oak Quercus acutissima Carruthers (Fagaceae) in a coppice stand in central Japan in 2004–2009. Curculio robustus females oviposit into Q. acutissima acorns, inside which the larvae develop. Mature larvae leave acorns and burrow into the soil, where they overwinter. Although germination did occur in acorns infested by weevil larvae, the percentage of germination was lower in acorns damaged by many larvae. Acorn production in Q. acutissima varied considerably among years. Both the number of C. robustus larvae infesting acorns and the percentage of acorns infested were affected by the amount of acorns produced by Q. acutissima, and two successive lean years appeared to have a considerable impact on C. robustus population size. Consequently, only a small fraction of the acorns produced were lost to predation in a mast year after two successive lean years. However, C. robustus could survive the two successive lean years because of prolonged larval diapause, probably leading to a marked decrease in population size. These findings suggest that masting in Q. acutissima succeeds as a predator satiation strategy in response to acorn damage by C. robustus, and that C. robustus has developed prolonged diapause as a counter‐adaptation.

Fluctuating asymmetry in an insect host: a big role for big parasites?
Thomas  Ward  & Poulin 《Ecology letters》1998,1(2):112-117
Parasites are expected to be associated with host developmental instability because developmentally unstable hosts may be more susceptible to, or more frequently exposed to, parasitic infections compared with developmentally stable ones, or because parasites may directly disrupt host development. In this study, we analysed the relationship between developmental stability in the weta Pleioplectron simplex (Orthoptera) and infections by hairworm and mermithid parasites. These parasites have a long development in their host and the size of adult worms exceeds the length of the host by a considerable amount (15–20 cm). For one character (femora) we found that fluctuating asymmetry was significantly higher in parasitized individuals compared with unparasitized ones, in each of two samples collected in different years. Because no relationship was observed between the level of fluctuating asymmetry and the parasite size or number, however, infection by hairworm and mermithid parasites could be more a consequence of developmental instability than a cause. For other characters (tibia, external and internal spines of femora), the level of fluctuating asymmetry between parasitized and unparasitized individuals was not significantly different. Our results are discussed in relation to ecological constraints met by hairworm and mermithid parasites to complete their life cycle.
