Will the laid eggs embryonate? Will the comb be orientated as usual? How about other parameters of orientation (geotaxis) and social behavior (thigmotaxis)? The effect of group size on behavioral parameters of the Oriental hornet,Vespa orientalis, was assessed experimentally under laboratory conditions. Hornet groups of various sizes (ranging from 1 to 100 individuals per group) comprised of young individuals (0–24 hr of age) devoid of a queen were placed in artificial breeding boxes (ABBs). The following three quantitative parameters were evaluated: the amount and rate of building as a function of the number of hornets in the group, the rate of oviposition as, related to group size and the longevity of hornets as a function of their group size. The probability for the occurrence of these events was similarly considered and additional behavioral parameters were only assessed qualitatively. Results of this investigation revealed a relation between the three mentioned quantitative behavioral parameters and the number of hornets per group. The number of hornets per group was positively related to the extent of building, the number of cells built by a group is , but negatively related to the rate of building. As for the delay of building, a non-monotone relation was found. The relation between number of hornets per group and the oviposition delay was found to be non-monotone; the number of hornets per group and their longevity were found to be inversely related. Discrepanices were recorded on the very small (1–2 individuals) or very large (100 individuals) hornet groups.  相似文献

In the roof of cells built by the Oriental hornet, Vespa orientalis (Vespinae, Hymenoptera), there is one or more grains differing in their composition and shape from the surrounding structures. These grains have a diameter of 100-200 microm and protrude slightly from the roof inward. They contain primarily a large percentage of Ti but also Fe and occasionally Si. The mineral makeup in the grains is still uncertain, but it seems that the minerals belong to the group called perovskite. These grains in the hornet's comb may originate from the soil around the nest, that is, comprised of ceramic matter, but it is also possible that they are secreted from a gland within the frons plate of the hornet because the fungus-like secretion in this gland contains elements similar to those in the roof of the comb cells. We conjecture that the grain in question serves as a reference point for the hornets that build the cell walls in the direction of gravity. The cement whereby the building hornets conjoin the various building materials, whether organic (cellulose and the like) or inorganic (sand grains or tiny stones), is a saliva that is secreted from their oral gland, which upon release hardens into a polymeric glue. The ceramic grain embedded within this polymeric matrix is endowed with different physical properties and can therefore respond differently to the tension or pressure of the surrounding walls.  相似文献

The present study focused on temperature assessments within a hornet nest. The measurements encompassed adult hornets, brood combs and the various stages of brood, and involved a thermographic method. Body parts of adult hornets were found to vary in their temperature, with the thorax eliciting the highest temperature and the abdomen the lowest. Similarly, there were thermal variances between larvae at instars 4-5, light-colored pupae and dark pupae. The measurements were made at day and night (when the entire population was present in the nest) on nests containing thousands of individuals at various ages. Most of the pupae measured during October were hornet drones. The usual air temperature between the (subterranean) combs was 28.7 degrees C, while the outside (ground level) temperature was 23.5 degrees C. The paper discusses the creation of heat by hornets, the thermoregulation throughout night and day, both by the hornets proper as well as by their products (comb and silk). Also discussed is the intra-nest conversion of one form of energy to another, as heat to electric current or vice versa.  相似文献

Oriental hornet young queens and workers have been induced to build combs in observation boxes. Both workers and queens displayed bulding activity over a period of 2 to 6 weeks, which is approximately the time range necessary for the development of one generation (from egg to pupa or maximally from egg to imago). Building activity and the comb architecture have been found to be influenced by such factors as: size of group, age of hornets, amputation of wings, tarsi and tips of antennae and light, and by feeding with mannose and barbiturates. The influence of ovarian adrenergic nerves on follicular growth during the estrous cycle in the adult guinea pig was ascertained by comparing follicular development in control and chemically sympathectomized ovaries from the same animal. Selective ovarian sympathectomy was achieved by injecting 6-hydroxydopamine into a surgically closed periovarian membranous sac (bursa) on day 2 of the cycle (day 1 = day of estrus). The contralateral surgically closed ovarian bursa was injected with solvent used for 6-hydroxydopamine. Animals were laparotomized on days 5, 10 and 14 of the cycle. Blood from the utero-ovarian vein was collected bilaterally for measurement of progesterone and androstenedione. The ovaries were processed for histologic examination, and the number of follicles in each ovary was analyzed morphometrically. Sympathectomy on day 2 caused a decrease in healthy preovulatory follicles (greater than 700 micron diameter) on day 10 of the cycle. There were no differences in ovarian weights or the total number of follicles per ovary at this time. On days 5 and 14 of the cycle, there were no differences in ovarian weights, total number of follicles per ovary or follicles in any size classification. Sympathectomy did not alter progesterone levels in the utero- ovarian vein as compared to contralateral control levels. From control ovaries, there was a significant increase in progesterone in the blood of the utero-ovarian vein on day 10 but venous levels of progesterone from sympathectomized ovaries were not significantly different at any day of the cycle. The present study reports on experiments carried out on workers of Vespa orientalis (Hymenoptera, Vespinae). The experiments involved: learning of the workers upon their breeding box, evaluation of their ability to navigate back to the breeding box from ever increasing distances, and the effect which masking the various light perceiving organs has on the homing flight of hornets. The test hornets were removed from their breeding box to which they became accustomed and then released at gradually increasing distances from it (100 to 1000 meters) so as to assess their ability to return home. The group of hornets returning from a given distance was on the next day released at a greater distance, and so forth, and their homing capability was then compared between regular control groups and hornets that were coated with masking paint in various light-perceiving regions such as the clypeus, frons, ocelli and ommatidia on the head or segments 3 or 4 of the gaster, the whole gaster or various combinations of the two (head and gaster). It was found that in all the groups combined (test + various controls) only about 44% of hornets released at a distance of 100 meters from the breeding box, found their way home. The percentage of homing hornets diminished with increasing distance from home and generally they responded in accordance with the formula: S(d)=exp(dp/beta), where d=distance; S(d)=the proportion of hornets expected to return from d; P=the shape parameter of the distribution: beta=the 'scale' parameter of the distribution. Percentage of successfully homing hornets was significantly larger in control hornets than in treated ones only at a release distance of 1000 meters.  相似文献

The characteristics of the development of tolerance to the anticonvulsant effects of chronic treatment by dipotassium clorazepate and diazepam using amygdaloid-kindled rats were investigated. Dipotassium clorazepate (5 mg/kg) or diazepam (5 mg/kg) were intraperitoneally administered for 10 consecutive days. Tolerance to the anticonvulsant effect of dipotassium clorazepate developed in seizure stage on day 6, after-discharge duration on day 7 and seizure latency on day 4. In contrast, tolerance to the effects of diazepam developed more rapidly in seizure stage on day 4, after-discharge duration on day 4 and seizure latency on day 3. Thus tolerance to the anticonvulsive effect of dipotassium clorazepate developed relatively slower than that to diazepam. All rats had stage 5 convulsions 24 hr after cessation of the administration of dipotassium clorazepate and diazepam. Concomitant determinations of plasma concentrations of the main metabolite of dipotassium clorazepate and diazepam, desmethyldiazepam, showed no statistical difference during treatment, suggesting that the developed tolerance was not metabolic but functional.  相似文献

Diazepam (100–133 mg/kg/day), administered chronically through a gastric fistula, and pentobarbital (ca 692 mg/kg/day), administered chronically in food, were studied for their dependence producing properties in Sprague-Dawley female rats. The diazepam abstinence syndrome was apparent 10 to 20 hours after withdrawal, persisted for over 60 hours and consisted of poker tail, explosive awakenings, digging in sawdust, jerks, tremors, wet dog shakes, hostility, decreased food and water consumption and weight loss. The pentobarbital abstinence syndrome came on rapidly peaking within 10 hours and was largely over by 16 hours. The pentobarbital abstinence syndrome differed from diazepam's by the presence of grand mal, clonic and atypical convulsions. Diazepam completely and in a dose related way suppressed the diazepam abstinence syndrome. Similarly pentobarbital suppressed the pentobarbital abstinence syndrome. The signs which could be suppressed in a dose related manner were different for the diazepam and pentobarbital abstinence syndromes. Diazepam only partially suppressed the pentobarbital abstinence syndrome and pentobarbital only partially suppressed the diazepam abstinence syndrome. These data indicate that diazepam and pentobarbital produce different types of dependencies in the rat and are not equivalent in suppressing signs of abstinence.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted in which 2-cell bovine embryos were prepared from oocytes, obtained from abattoir ovaries, by in-vitro maturation for 22 to 24 hours, followed by exposure to spermatozoa for 8 hours and culture for 40 hours within the cumulus. The cumulus cells were then removed, and the cleaved embryos were cultured for a further 120 hours or longer, in the presence or absence of glucose, pyruvate and lactate. Very few embryos developed in the complete absence of energy substrates. Lactate and pyruvate, alone or combined, supported development to the 8-cell stage, but pyruvate was required to support development to the morula stage (Experiment 1). When present throughout culture or when added at 48 or 96 hours postinsemination, 5.56 mM glucose was detrimental to development (Experiments 1 and 2). However, when added at 120 hours postinsemination, 5.56 mM glucose improved development to the blastocyst and expanded blastocyst stages, compared with no glucose or 11.12 mM glucose (Experiment 3).  相似文献

This study deals with the effect which solar irradiation of short wavelength, particularly ultraviolet (UV), exerts on the activities of hornets. The findings are based on multi-annual observations carried out during the years 1985, 1989 and 1998 on hornet nests in the field. At the peak of UV radiation, which occurs at noon, hornet activity is greater by 1-2 orders of magnitude than that during the morning or evening hours. The main visible hornet activity appears to be the removal of soil particles from the nest so as to enlarge its volume, enable the building of additional combs and also increase the size of existing combs. Hornet flight during peak insolation hours is characterized by its briefness (5-20 seconds only) and brevity (to distances of 5-10 meters only) as compared to flights at other hours of the day. These prolonged, multi-annual observations lead to the conclusion that hornets are capable of converting the energy of UV radiation into a form amenable to metabolic usage. In this respect the hornet cuticle behaves as a thermophotovoltaic device, i.e., a semiconductor diode that converts photons radiating from the sunlight into electrical energy.  相似文献

Thirty-two colonies of bees with varying populations were established in 1·2-m3 boxes for 24 days. At the end of this time, the bees were killed, and the comb structure, design, and placement were examined to obtain information about the initiation of bee nests. The analysis of variance of three dimensions of the comb (height, width, and length) showed no statistical differences when all thirty-two colonies were considered as a group.Comb built by queenless bees differed from any described in the literature. We think it is comb characteristically built by queenless bees that is neither worker nor drone in size but intermediate.The occurrence of multiple clusters building comb with and without queen in the same box is recorded but unexplained at present.An explanation is offered for the curl appearing in the lower edges of straight combs.  相似文献

Summary It is possible to observe directly building bees into a glass hive included into an incubator; under these conditions, the bee chains are much less crowded and it is easy to see the behavior and position of each bee in the chain. It is very likely that many bees are used only to maintain the temperature during comb building. The observation of bee chains render the prevision of the future comb shape possible. Drawing on the glass of the hive the shape of the chains, we saw next day close correlation with the comb built during the night. It seems that bee chains are used only to provide the workers with a «thermic information» on the place and shape of the comb to be built in. Of course, that is only an hypothesis that will be studied in full detail in following paper.  相似文献

The benzodiazepine antagonist properties of Ro 15-1788 were evaluated in rats trained to discriminate between saline and either 1.0 mg/kg of diazepam or 10 mg/kg of pentobarbital in a two-choice discrete-trial shock avoidance procedure. When administered alone, 1.0 mg/kg of diazepam and 10 mg/kg of pentobarbital produced comparable amounts of drug-appropriate responding (> 84%), whether rats were trained to discriminate between diazepam or pentobarbital and saline. Ro 15-1788 (3–32 mg/kg, p.o.), administered 10 min before diazepam or pentobarbital, produced a dose-related blockade of the discriminative effects of diazepam in both groups of rats, but was completely ineffective in blocking the discriminative effects of pentobarbital. The dose-effect curve for the discriminative effects of diazepam was shifted to the right in a parallel fashion 3- and 13-fold by 10 and 32 mg/kg of Ro 15-1788, respectively, indicating that Ro 15-1788 acts as a surmountable, competitive antagonist of diazepam. When administered alone, Ro 15-1788 (32–100 mg/kg, p.o.) produced primarily saline-appropriate responding, although 100 mg/kg of Ro 15-1788 produced drug-appropriate responding in one out of eight rats. When administered orally 30 min after diazepam, Ro 15-1788 (32 mg/kg) completely reversed within 10 min the discriminative effects of diazepam. The blockade of diazepam's discriminative effects by 32 mg/kg of Ro 15-1788 appeared to last at least as long (approximately 2 hr) as the effects of diazepam alone.  相似文献

Fetal ovaries of 14.5-day-old rats were cultured for periods of up to 19 days in control medium or in medium conditioned by the preliminary culture of testes from fetal or young rats. In all ovaries, after 12 days of culture in either medium, epithelial cords were noted having an aspect identical to that of seminiferous cords present in fetal testes explanted at 14.5 days and also cultured for 12 days, i.e. the epithelial cords appeared in ovaries when there was no 'male' or testicular influence. The appearance of histological preparations suggested that the disappearance of the germ cells might bring about a reorganization of the follicular cells in epithelial cords during the differentiation period of the first follicles. With ovaries cultured in conditioned medium, degeneration of the germ cells was more marked, follicles were rare and intra-ovarian cords were greater in number than in ovaries cultured in control medium. The ovaries thus transformed produced the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) although they lacked the "germinostatic activity" normally developed by testes of fetal or young rats. This germinostatic activity prevents the multiplication of oogonia when the testes and ovaries are co-cultured in vitro. The transformed ovaries therefore do not have all the functional capacities of fetal testes.  相似文献

A single, intraperitoneal injection of either chlordiazepoxide (280–3100 mg/kg) or diazepam (120–980 mg/kg) was administered to pregnant hamsters on day 8 of gestation. These dosages produced a dose-dependent sedation of pregnant animals lasting up to 36 hours, and a combined maternal mortality rate of 21% (chlordiazepoxide) and 5% (diazepam). Animals were sacrificed on gestation day 12 and the fetuses were examined for gross malformations. Although there was a dose-related increase in the frequency of malformed fetuses (3.4%–54.7% for chlordiazepoxide, and 0–58.7% for diazepam), the lowest teratogenic dose was noted to be 280 mg/kg, i.e., almost 500 times and 1000 times the average daily recommended therapeutic doses for chlordiazepoxide and diazepam, respectively. The majority of fetal malformations observed with both compounds were either exencephaly or cranioschisis. The results of this study should be interpreted with caution in so far as their relevance to humans is concerned. The terata were observed at exceedingly high doses (700–7000 times the average human use dose), and the malformations noted by us have not been associated with the use of minor tranquilizers in human pregnancy. Also, although we found no gross anomalies in the litters of dams deprived of food and water for up to 72 hours, the confounding role of prolonged periods of sedation and resulting inactivity, and possible hypoxia and hypothermia needs to be explored further.  相似文献

Besides the central gabaergic receptors described for benzodiazepines, peripheral type binding sites (PBR) were also identified for these molecules in endocrine steroidogenic tissues, immune organs and cells, such as macrophages and lymphocytes. PBR activation was reported to decrease innate immunity and host defense. The present experiment was designed to analyze the effects of diazepam on Ehrlich tumor growth, and on macrophage activity of Ehrlich tumor bearing mice. Results showed that diazepam (3.0 mg/kg/day, for 7 days) increased the number of Ehrlich tumor cells and the volume of tumor-induced ascitic fluid. These effects were not observed after smaller doses of diazepam, suggesting a dose-dependant effect. Furthermore, our results show that 3.0 mg/kg of diazepam, administered daily, for 2 days, decreased (1) the number of peritoneal leukocytes retrieved after injection of the Ehrlich tumor, (2) the percents of macrophage spreading, and (3) the levels of macrophage NO production. Diazepam (3.0 mg/kg/day for 2 days) had no effect on macrophage phagocytosis or on H2O2 production. The present data is discussed based on a direct and/or indirect action of diazepam. Particularly, our findings might be due to a direct effect of diazepam on PBRs present on macrophages and tumor cells, or could still be mediated by PBR stimulation within the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.  相似文献

The prenatal treatment of diazepam on the developmental pattern of brain ornithine decarboxylase and the general growth of offspring were studied. Diazepam (120 mg/kg/day) was administered orally to pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats from day 14 to day 20 of gestation. The activity of brain ornithine decarboxylase and body weight of the offspring were measured from the late fetal stage to the early postnatal stage. It was found that diazepam inhibited both the prenatal and 4-hour postnatal ornithine decarboxylase activities, though the general maturation pattern of the enzyme in the brain was not much altered. It may indicate that diazepam inhibits early brain development. The enzyme activity fell off as it reached maturation. Prenatal treated neonates of 6-hour or older age group had the normal activities of brain ornithine decarboxylase. The general growth of the treated offspring was substantially retarded. Their body weights were very much lower than the control offspring. The results of the present study is an additional evidence that diazepam and other benzodiazepines should be used with great care in pregnant women.  相似文献

Steroid production and histological features of ovaries were compared either among normal +/+ mice of 3-12 days of age or among 12-day old mutant mice with various degrees of oocyte depletion. Whole ovaries were cultured in the medium containing [3H]progesterone and hCG or 4-androstene-3,17-dione and FSH; amounts of [3H]androgens or oestrogens released from the ovaries were assayed. FSH-responsive aromatase activity was detectable in ovaries of +/+ mice on day 3 after birth (2.6 +/- 0.4 pmol/2 ovaries/48 h), but the activity producing androgens from progesterone, under stimulation of hCG, was not detectable even on day 6 after birth (less than 0.1 pmol/2 ovaries/48 h). The androgen-producing activity appeared on day 9 after birth (1.16 +/- 0.25 pmol/2 ovaries/48 h), when follicles with more than two layers of granulosa cells developed. The ovaries of 12-day old Sl/Slt mice contained a considerable number of follicles with a single layer of granulosa cells, but did not contain any follicles with more than two layers of granulosa cells. The ovaries of Sl/Slt mice possessed aromatase activity (3.3 +/- 0.4 pmol/2 ovaries/48 h) but, not androgen-producing activity (less than 0.1 pmol/2 ovaries/48 h). The present results suggest that development of follicles with more than two layers of granulosa cells may induce the activity producing androgens from progesterone under stimulation of LH in suckling mouse ovaries, though the FSH-responsive aromatase activity is present even in follicles with a single layer of granulosa cells.  相似文献

Ascorbigen, a natural product, is an indole derivative of L-ascorbic acid. Its effect on postnatal development and antibacterial resistance of the small intestine was studied on newborn mice. Ascorbigen was administered to 3-5-day old mice in a dose of 100 mg/kg orally every day for 7-10 days. 30 minutes before the last administration of the drug clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli were administered intragastrically to the young mice. The animals were killed in 24 hours and the frequency of the isolation of the microbes from the blood, spleen, kidneys and liver was developed. The oral use of the drug normalized the intestinal microflora, provided a reliable decrease of the bacteria isolation from the blood, spleen, kidneys and liver and prevented the animal death. The morphological examination showed that ascorbigen significantly increased the number and activity of the Paneth cells in the gland crypts, the goblet cells in the villi and mononuclear cells in the selfplate of the intestine mucous membrane vs. the intact control.  相似文献
