Many studies have investigated the importance of the intestinal bacterial activation of individual phytoestrogens. However, human nutrition contains different phytoestrogens and the final exposure depends on the microbial potential to activate all different groups within each individual. In this work, interindividual variations in the bacterial activation of the different phytoestrogens were assessed. Incubation of feces from 100 individuals using SoyLife EXTRA, LinumLife EXTRA and isoxanthohumol suggested that individuals could be separated into high, moderate and low O-desmethylangolensin (O-DMA), equol, enterodiol (END), enterolactone (ENL) or 8-prenylnaringenin producers, but that the metabolism of isoflavones, lignans and prenylflavonoids follows separate, independent pathways. However, O-DMA and equol production correlated negatively, whereas a positive correlation was found between END and ENL production. In addition, END production correlated negatively with Clostridium coccoides-Eubacterium rectale counts. Furthermore, O-DMA production was correlated with the abundance of methanogens, whereas equol production correlated with sulfate-reducing bacteria, indicating that the metabolic fate of daidzein may be related to intestinal H(2) metabolism.  相似文献

Particular intestinal bacteria metabolize the soy isoflavone daidzein to equol and O-desmethylangolensin (O-DMA), metabolites that can be identified in urine. Individuals that harbor bacteria capable of producing equol or O-DMA are known as equol producers (approximately 30%-50% of the population) and O-DMA producers (approximately 80%-90% of the population), respectively. The equol-producer phenotype has been associated with sex hormone-related outcomes in several studies. However, the bacteria responsible for these phenotypes have not yet been identified and factors that influence the manifestation of these phenotypes are not well understood. To evaluate familial clustering of and nongenetic factors associated with these phenotypes, 410 individuals from 112 families participated in phenotyping (3-day soy challenge and Day 4 spot urine collection). In segregation analyses of the equol-producer phenotype, the Mendelian dominant model provided the most parsimonious fit to the data, suggesting that the pattern of inheritance of the equol-producer phenotype is consistent with an autosomal dominant trait. This phenotype was positively associated with education (p trend = 0.01), but not with sex, smoking, or several dietary factors. Results of the segregation analyses of the O-DMA-producer phenotype were inconclusive; no other models provided a more parsimonious fit to the data than the general model. This phenotype was inversely associated with age in a nonlinear model (p = 0.01), positively associated with age- and sex-adjusted height (odds ratio [OR] 10-cm increase = 0.38, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.15, 0.95) and body mass index (kg/m(2)) (OR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.85, 0.96), but not with sex, education, smoking, or several dietary factors. These results suggest the equol-producer phenotype may be under some degree of genetic control and that there are likely other environmental factors not evaluated in the present analysis that contribute to both of these phenotypes. These results provide a foundation for further work to refine our understanding of heritable and environmental determinants of daidzein-metabolizing phenotypes.  相似文献

Daidzein (4',7-dihydroxyisoflavone), a soy phytoestrogen, is a weakly estrogenic compound that may have potential health benefits. Biotransformation of daidzein by the human gut microflora after ingestion converts it to either the highly estrogenic metabolite equol or to nonestrogenic metabolites. We investigated the metabolism of daidzein by colonic microflora of rats. Fecal samples, obtained before and after rats were exposed to daidzein at 250 or 1000 parts per million, were incubated in brain-heart infusion (BHI) broth with daidzein under anaerobic conditions. Samples were removed from the cultures daily and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry. The fecal bacteria of all rats, regardless of prior daidzein exposure, metabolized the added daidzein to dihydrodaidzein. Both compounds disappeared rapidly from BHI cultures incubated for more than 24 h, but no other daidzein metabolites were detected. Only daidzein and dihydrodaidzein were found in a direct analysis of the feces of rats that had consumed daidzein in their diets. Unlike the fecal bacteria of humans and monkeys, the rat flora rapidly metabolized daidzein to aliphatic compounds that could not be detected by HPLC or mass spectral analysis.  相似文献

Human and animal studies suggest that dietary soy isoflavones reduce cancer risk, ameliorate postmenopausal syndrome and decrease bone resorption in postmenopausal women. The capacity to form the metabolite equol from daidzein is suggested as an important modulator of response to isoflavones; this capacity depends on gut colonization with appropriate bacteria. We administered a dietary supplement containing high-dose purified soy isoflavones (genistein, 558 mg/day; daidzein, 296 mg/day; and glycitein, 44 mg/day) to 30 postmenopausal women for 84 days and collected peripheral lymphocytes at timed intervals. Using microarray analysis, we determined whether changes in gene expression associated with this treatment support existing hypotheses as to isoflavones' mechanisms of action. Expression of a large number of genes was altered by isoflavone treatment, including induction of genes associated with cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) signaling and cell differentiation and decreased expression of genes associated with cyclin-dependent kinase activity and cell division. We report that isoflavone treatment in subjects who have the capacity to produce equol differentially affects gene expression as compared with nonproducers, supporting the plausibility of the importance of equol production. In general, isoflavones had a stronger effect on some putative estrogen-responsive genes in equol producers than in nonproducers. Our study suggests that, in humans, isoflavone changes are related to increased cell differentiation, increased cAMP signaling and G-protein-coupled protein metabolism and increased steroid hormone receptor activity and have some estrogen agonist effects; equol-production status is likely to be an important modulator of responses to isoflavones.  相似文献

Hydrogen gas produced during colonic fermentation is excreted in breath and flatus, or removed by hydrogen-consuming bacteria such as methanogens and sulphate-reducing bacteria. However, recent research has shown that H2 is also consumed by equol-producing bacteria during the reduction of daidzein into equol. In this study, the interactions between methanogens, sulphate-reducing, and equol-producing bacteria were investigated under in vitro simulated intestinal conditions. In the presence of daidzein, the equol-producing bacterial consortium EPC4 gave rise to equol production in cultures of Methanobrevibacter smithii or Desulfovibrio sp. as well as in faecal samples with methanogenic or sulphate-reducing abilities. Moreover, this supplementation significantly (P < 0.001) decreased the methanogenesis and sulphidogenesis. The attenuation did not occur in the absence of a daidzein source. Additionally, there was no influence of soy germ powder, daidzein or equol as such, excluding a possible inhibition by these compounds. Finally, a stronger decrease was observed with increasing amounts of EPC4 and a constant equol production, suggesting that the observed effect was only partly caused by the action of daidzein as a hydrogen sink. These findings are of relevance since abdominal discomfort such as bloating and flatulence, are related to colonic gas production, whereas equol has potential health benefits.  相似文献

Isoflavonoids found in legumes, such as soybeans, are converted by intestinal bacteria to metabolites that might have increased or decreased estrogenic activity. Variation in the effects of dietary isoflavonoids among individuals has been attributed to differences in their metabolism by intestinal bacteria. To investigate this variation, the metabolism of the isoflavonoid daidzein by bacteria from ten fecal samples, provided at different times by six individuals on soy-containing diets, was compared. After anaerobic incubation of bacteria with daidzein for 2 weeks, four samples had metabolized daidzein and six samples had not. Three of the positive samples were from individuals whose microflora had not metabolized daidzein in previous samples. Dihydrodaidzein was observed in one sample, dihydrodaidzein and equol in another sample, and equol and O-desmethylangolensin in two other samples. These results corroborate the hypothesis that the microflora of the gastrointestinal tract of an individual influences the particular isoflavone metabolites produced following consumption.  相似文献

Equol, a metabolite of the phytoestrogen daidzein, is present at significant levels in some humans who consume soy and in rodents fed soy-based diets. Equol is estrogenic in vitro, but there have been limited studies of its activity in vivo. We evaluated equol effects on reproductive and non-reproductive endpoints in mice. Ovariectomized age-matched (30-day-old) female C57BL/6 mice were fed phytoestrogen-free diets and given a racemic mixture of equol by daily injections (0, 4, 8, 12, or 20 mg [kg body weight](-1) day(-1)) or in the diet (0, 500, or 1,000 ppm) for 12 days. Mice were killed, and serum concentrations of total and aglycone equol were measured. Total serum equol concentrations ranged from 1.4 to 7.5 microM with increasing doses of injected equol, but uterine weight increased significantly only at 12 and 20 mg (kg body weight)(-1) day(-1). Dietary equol at 500 or 1,000 ppm produced total serum equol concentrations of 5.9 and 8.1 microM, respectively, comparable with those in rodents consuming certain high-soy chows; the proportion of equol present as the free aglycone was much lower with dietary administration than injections, which may be a factor in the greater biological effects induced by injections. Dietary equol did not significantly increase uterine weight. Increasing dietary and injected equol doses caused a dose-dependent increase in vaginal epithelial thickness. Uterine epithelial proliferation was increased by equol injections at 8-20 mg (kg body weight)(-1) day(-1) and 1,000 ppm dietary equol. Neither dietary nor injected equol decreased thymic or adipose weights. In conclusion, equol is a weak estrogen with modest effects on endpoints regulated by estrogen receptor alpha when present at serum levels seen in rodents fed soy-based diets, but quantities present in humans may not be sufficient to induce estrogenic effects, although additive effects of equol with other phytoestrogens may occur.  相似文献

Recently, the biological effects of isoflavones have attracted much attention. Intestinal microbiota plays an important role in the metabolism and bioavailability of isoflavones. However, few reports have discussed intestinal bacteria that metabolize daidzein into dihydrodaidzein. In this study, we isolated the dihydrodaidzein-producing intestinal bacterium TM-40 from a healthy boy's faeces. The bacteria from faecal samples were incubated with daidzein. Among all tested bacteria, one strain (strain TM-40) produced dihydrodaidzein both from daidzein and daidzin. However, in our experimental conditions, strain TM-40 did not produce equol from daidzein. The 16S rRNA partial sequence of strain TM-40 (AB249652) exhibited a 93% similarity to that of Coprobacillus catenaformis (AB030218). This strain seems to be a new species.  相似文献

Isoflavonoids are compounds present in many legumes, but are derived in the human diet mainly from soybeans and various soybean-based food products. The major isoflavonoids occurring in soy are the glycosides of genistein and daidzein. The metabolic products of genistein metabolism in humans have not been clearly shown. The two main products of daidzein metabolism in humans appear to be equol and O-desmethylangolensin. Increasing evidence suggests that oxidative modification to low-density lipoprotein is involved in atherogenesis, and that natural antioxidants that prevent or inhibit oxidative damage to low-density lipoprotein may beneficially influence atherogenesis. In the present experiments, the effects of genistein and daidzein, and the daidzein metabolites equol and O-desmethylangolensin on Cu2+-induced oxidation of lipoproteins in serum were examined. Three concentrations of each compound (0.1 μM, 1 μM, 10 μM) were tested for antioxidant activity in six individual serum samples. All compounds tested inhibited lipoprotein oxidation. The minimum concentration for significant inhibition was 1 μM for genistein and daidzein (P < 0.05), and 0.1 μM equol and O-desmethylangolensin (P < 0.05). Equol and O-desmethylangolensin were more potent inhibitors of in vitro lipoprotein oxidation in serum than the two major dietary isoflavonoids. This study has demonstrated that soybean isoflavonoids and metabolic products of daidzein metabolism inhibit lipoprotein oxidation in vitro. Human intervention studies are needed to determine if these compounds can influence oxidation in vivo.  相似文献

Equol (7-hydroxy-3[4'hydroxyphenyl]-chroman) is the major metabolite of the phytoestrogen daidzein, one of the main isoflavones found abundantly in soybeans and soy foods. Equol may be an important biologically active molecule based on recent studies demonstrating that equol can modulate reproductive function. In this study, we examined the effects of equol on prostate growth and LH secretion and determined some of the mechanisms by which it might act. Administration of equol to intact male rats for 4-7 days reduced ventral prostate and epididymal weight and increased circulating LH levels. Using binding assays, we determined that equol specifically binds 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), but not testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone, or estrogen with high affinity. Equol does not bind the prostatic androgen receptor, and has a modest affinity for recombinant estrogen receptor (ER) beta, and no affinity for ERalpha. In castrated male rats treated with DHT, concomitant treatment with equol blocked DHT's trophic effects on the ventral prostate gland growth and inhibitory feedback effects on plasma LH levels without changes in circulating DHT. Therefore, equol can bind circulating DHT and sequester it from the androgen receptor, thus altering growth and physiological hormone responses that are regulated by androgens. These data suggest a novel model to explain equol's biological properties. The significance of equol's ability to specifically bind and sequester DHT from the androgen receptor have important ramifications in health and disease and may indicate a broad and important usage for equol in the treatment of androgen-mediated pathologies.  相似文献

Equol is a metabolite produced from daidzein by enteric microflora, and it has attracted a great deal of attention because of its protective or ameliorative ability against several sex hormone-dependent diseases (e.g., menopausal disorder and lower bone density), which is more potent than that of other isoflavonoids. We purified a novel NADP(H)-dependent daidzein reductase (L-DZNR) from Lactococcus strain 20-92 (Lactococcus 20-92; S. Uchiyama, T. Ueno, and T. Suzuki, international patent WO2005/000042) that is involved in the metabolism of soy isoflavones and equol production and converts daidzein to dihydrodaidzein. Partial amino acid sequences were determined from purified L-DZNR, and the gene encoding L-DZNR was cloned. The nucleotide sequence of this gene consists of an open reading frame of 1,935 nucleotides, and the deduced amino acid sequence consists of 644 amino acids. L-DZNR contains two cofactor binding motifs and an 4Fe-4S cluster. It was further suggested that L-DZNR was an NAD(H)/NADP(H):flavin oxidoreductase belonging to the old yellow enzyme (OYE) family. Recombinant histidine-tagged L-DZNR was expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant protein converted daidzein to (S)-dihydrodaidzein with enantioselectivity. This is the first report of the isolation of an enzyme related to daidzein metabolism and equol production in enteric bacteria.Isoflavones are flavonoids present in various plants and are known to be abundant in soybeans and legumes. These compounds have been called phytoestrogens because their chemical structure is similar to that of the female sex hormone, estrogen. Isoflavones have an ability to bind to estrogen receptors and show protection against or improvement in several sex hormone-dependent diseases, such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, menopausal disorder, lower bone density, and hypertension, due to their weak agonistic or antagonistic effects (1, 19, 27).Daidzein is one of the main soy isoflavonoids produced from daidzin by the glucosidase of intestinal bacteria (17). Equol is a metabolite produced from daidzein by the enterobacterial microflora (5). Recently, equol has attracted a great deal of attention because its estrogenic activity is more potent than that of other isoflavonoids, including daidzein (27). It is well known that individual variation exists in the ability of these enteric microflora to produce equol and that less than half the human population is capable of producing equol after ingesting soy isoflavones (3). Therefore, to increase the production of equol in the enteric environment of each individual, the development of probiotics using safe bacteria which have the ability to produce equol from daidzein is ongoing.Lactococcus strain 20-92 (Lactococcus 20-92; 30a) is an equol-producing lactic acid bacterium isolated from the feces of healthy humans by Uchiyama et al. (30). This bacterium is spherical and Gram positive and is a strain of L. garvieae. The application of Lactococcus 20-92 in probiotics is advantageous because L. garvieae is not pathogenic or toxic to humans. To date, other bacterial strains that are capable of transforming daidzein to dihydrodaidzein or equol have been isolated (9, 21, 22, 23, 29, 32, 36, 37). Daidzein is thought to be metabolized by human intestinal bacteria to equol or to O-desmethylangolensin via dihydrodaidzein and tetrahydrodaidzein (14, 15, 22, 32); however, neither the enzymes involved in the metabolism of daidzein to equol nor even the metabolic pathway has been clarified fully for equol-producing bacteria. In this study, we purified an enzyme from Lactococcus 20-92 that assisted in the conversion of daidzein to dihydrodaidzein. Furthermore, we cloned the L-DZNR gene and expressed the active recombinant enzyme in E. coli.  相似文献

Equol is a metabolite produced in vivo from the soy phytoestrogen daidzein by the action of gut microflora. It is known to be estrogenic, so human exposure to equol could have significant biological effects. Equol is a chiral molecule that can exist as the enantiomers R-equol and S-equol. To study the biological activity of racemic (+/-)-equol, as well as that of its pure enantiomers, we developed an efficient and convenient method to prepare (+/-)-equol from available isoflavanoid precursors. Furthermore, we optimized a method to separate the enantiomers of equol by chiral HPLC, and we studied for the first time, the activities of the enantiomers on the two estrogen receptors, ERalpha and ERbeta. In binding assays, S-equol has a high binding affinity, preferential for ERbeta (K(i)[ERbeta]=16 nM; beta/alpha=13 fold), that is comparable to that of genistein (K(i)[ERbeta]=6.7 nM; beta/alpha=16), whereas R-equol binds more weakly and with a preference for ERalpha (K(i)[ERalpha]=50 nM; beta/alpha=0.29). All equol isomers have higher affinity for both ERs than does the biosynthetic precursor daidzein. The availability and the in vitro characterization of the equol enantiomers should enable their biological effects to be studied in detail.  相似文献

A new and reliable HPLC method for the quantitation of daidzein, equol, and genistein in human breast tissue has been developed. The method was applied to biopsies from women undergoing breast reductions, who, prior to surgery, had ingested either a soy isoflavone preparation or a placebo tablet. The results were compared with data collected for urine and serum of the same subjects using standard methods. The limits of detection in the breast tissue homogenate were 24.7 nmol/l for daidzein, 148.0 nmol/l for equol, and 28.4 nmol/l for genistein (S/N of 3). The chromatographic limits of quantitation were 62.5 nmol/l for daidzein and genistein, and 125.0 nmol/l for equol, for which the accuracies were 86.0%, 83.6%, and 81.8%, respectively. The coefficients of variation of these measurements were all below 20% (11.1% for daidzein, 16.4% for genistein, and 13.2% for equol). The sample preparation comprised a concentration step and the absolute limits of quantitation were, therefore, 4.7 nmol/l, 18.8 nmol/l, and 0.94 nmol/l for daidzein and genistein, and 9.4 nmol/l, 37.5 nmol/l, and 1.9 nmol/l for equol in urine, serum, and breast tissue homogenate, respectively. Recoveries were between 70% (+/-5.6%) in breast tissue homogenate and 100% (+/-14.1%) in urine and serum for all three compounds. Equol (less than 1 micromol/l homogenate) was found to be the predominant phytoestrogen in breast tissue and its concentrations exceeded those in serum. The concentrations of phytoestrogens were at least 100-fold higher in urine than in serum and breast tissue.  相似文献

Equol and O-desmethylangolensin (O-DMA) are products of bacterial metabolism of daidzein, an isoflavone in soybeans; thus, the presence or absence of equol and/or O-DMA in urine is a marker of particular intestinal bacteria profiles. Plasma hormone concentrations may be lower in pre-menopausal women who harbor the bacteria capable of producing equol (equol producers) compared to women who do not (equol non-producers). We evaluated concentrations of serum hormones, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and urinary 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OH E1) and 16-hydroxyestrone (16-OH E1) in relation to equol-producer and O-DMA-producer phenotypes in 89 post-menopausal women. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) was 23% greater in O-DMA-producers compared to non-producers (P=0.04). No significant differences in serum estrogens, androgens, metabolic hormones, or SHBG were observed in relation to either daidzein-metabolizing phenotype. Compared with non-producers within each phenotype, age-adjusted 2-OH E1:16-OH E1 was 27% greater (P=0.06) in equol-producers and 9% greater (P>0.10) in O-DMA-producers, and 2-OH E1 concentrations were 24% greater in equol producers (P=0.07) and 42% greater in O-DMA producers (P=0.02). No significant differences in 16-OH E1 were observed in relation to either phenotype. These results suggest that interindividual variability in intestinal bacteria may be related to differences in products of hormone metabolism in post-menopausal women.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We previously found that equol, a metabolite of intestinal bacterial conversion from soy isoflavone daidzein, has female-specific anorectic effects. In the present study, we used seven-week-old female ovariectomized (OVX) Sprague Dawley rats to test the hypothesis that the anorectic effect of dietary daidzein may be attributed to delayed gastric emptying. Results suggest that dietary daidzein delays gastric emptying and that it has an anorectic effect with residual gastric contents, but not without gastric contents. Dietary equol significantly decreased daily food intake in the OVX rats without sleeve gastrectomy, but not in those with sleeve gastrectomy, suggesting that the accumulation of food in the stomach is required for the anorectic effect of equol to occur. These results support the hypothesis that the anorectic effect of dietary daidzein is attributed to delayed gastric emptying.  相似文献

Phytoestrogens are plant compounds that have been proposed to have a variety of health benefits. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of these compounds on a number of physiological endpoints. Subjects were given a single intake of a phytoestrogen-rich (80 mg total phytoestrogens) supplement containing soy, rye and linseed (Phase 1), followed by a week-long intervention using the same supplement (Phase 2) (80 mg total phytoestrogens daily). A number of biochemical endpoints were assessed including urinary phytoestrogen metabolites, lipids, antioxidant status, DNA damage and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and IGF binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) and -3 (IGFBP-3). Ten healthy female subjects took part in the study. Excretion of the isoflavones genistein, daidzein and equol in urine increased in both phases of the study. No other endpoint was altered in Phase 1. However, in Phase 2, concentrations of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were increased by phytoestrogen supplementation [IGF-1, median (IQ range), baseline 155 (123, 258), postweek 265 (228, 360) ng/ml, P<.05; IGFBP-3, baseline 3725 (3631, 4196), postweek 4420 (4192, 4935) ng/ml, P<.05]. There was no effect of supplementation on lipids or markers of antioxidant status. Short-term phytoestrogen supplementation increases urinary phytoestrogen excretion and increases IGF-1 and IGFBP-3. These results require elucidation in further controlled studies.  相似文献

Soy-containing foods and dietary supplements are widely consumed for putative health benefits (e.g., cancer chemoprevention, beneficial effects on serum lipids associated with cardiovascular health, reduction of osteoporosis, relief of menopausal symptoms). However, studies of soy isoflavones in experimental animals suggest possible adverse effects as well (e.g., enhancement of reproductive organ cancer, modulation of endocrine function, anti-thyroid effects). This paper describes the development and validation of a sensitive high throughput method for quantifying isoflavones in blood from experimental animal and human studies. Serum samples containing genistein, daidzein, and equol were processed using reverse phase solid-phase extraction in the 96-well format for subsequent LC-ES/MS/MS or LC-ES/MS analysis using isotope dilution in conjunction with labeled internal standards. The method was validated by repetitive analysis of spiked blank serum and the intra-day and inter-day accuracy (88-99%) and precision (relative standard deviations from 3 to 13%) of measurement determined. The lower limit of quantification for all isoflavones was approximately 0.005 micro M using MS/MS detection, and 0.03 micro M using MS for genistein and daidzein. The degree of method performance, with respect to throughput, sensitivity and selectivity, makes this approach practical for analysis of large sample sets generated from mechanistic animal studies and human clinical trials of soy isoflavones.  相似文献

The intestinal microbial transformation of daidzein into equol is subject to a wide inter-individual variability. The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro this transformation and to evaluate possible correlations between individual diet and equol production. The transformation of daidzein was investigated in anaerobic batch cultures inoculated with mixed fecal bacteria from 90 volunteers. The daidzein metabolism was monitored by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and a chiral column was used to distinguish equol and dihydrodaidzein enantiomers. The obtained results show that daidzein was unchanged (≈27%) or degraded to equol (≈28%), O-desmethylangolensin (≈12%) or dihydrodaidzein (≈31%). Furthermore, some subjects (≈2%) are able to produce both equol and O-desmethylangolensin. Bacteria represent sub-dominant populations (105–109 cell/g wet faeces) in “slow” equol producers, while higher counts of equol-producing microorganisms (1010–1011 cell/g wet faeces) were found in “quick” equol producers. The in vitro test to evaluate equol-producing status is quick and not invasive, and the obtained results are comparable with those reported in vivo. Indeed, the only enantiomer present in the batch cultures containing equol was the S-form. No significant correlations between equol production, BMI, age and sex were found. It seems that the equol-producer group consumed less fibre, vegetables and cereals, and more lipids from animal sources.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To identify the metabolites produced from an isoflavonoid, daidzein, by colonic bacteria of rhesus monkeys. METHODS: The metabolism of daidzein by the fecal bacteria of nine monkeys was investigated. Daidzein was incubated anaerobically with fecal bacteria, and the metabolites were analyzed by use of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. RESULTS: The fecal bacteria of all of the monkeys metabolized daidzein to various extents. Dihydrodaidzein was found in cultures of fecal bacteria from two monkeys; dihydrodaidzein and equol were found in cultures from four monkeys; dihydrodaidzein, equol, and an unknown metabolite (MW = 244) were found in cultures from one monkey; and dihydrodaidzein and the unknown metabolite were found in cultures from two monkeys. CONCLUSIONS: Similar to that in humans, variation was evident in the metabolism of isoflavonoids by fecal bacteria from rhesus monkeys. Some metabolites produced by fecal bacteria from monkeys were the same as those produced by fecal bacteria from humans.  相似文献
