Cyst forms of the opportunistic fungal parasite Pneumocystis carinii were found in the lungs of 34% of the desert shrew, Notiosorex crawfordi (n = 59), 13% of the ornate shrew, Sorex ornatus (n = 55), 6% of the dusky-footed wood rat, Neotoma fuscipes (n = 16), 2.5% of the California meadow vole, Microtus californicus (n = 40), and 50% of the California pocket mouse, Chaetodipus californicus (n = 2) caught from southern California between February 1998 and February 2000. Cysts were not found in any of the harvest mouse, Reithrodontomys megalotis (n = 21), California mouse, Peromyscus californicus (n = 20), brush mouse, Peromyscus boylii (n = 7) or deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus (n = 4) examined. All infections were mild; extrapulmonary infections were not observed. Other lung parasites detected were Hepatozoon sp./spp. from M. californicus and Notiosorex crawfordi, Chrysosporium sp. (Emmonsia) from M. californicus, and a nematode from S. ornatus.  相似文献

Species distribution of staphylococci from small wild mammals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A total of 197 isolates of Staphylococcus from small wild animals (insectivores and rodents) were identified by partial sequencing of the rpoB and dnaJ genes. Among the identified isolates the predominant species was S. succinus (28%), followed by S. xylosus (20.8%) and S. stepanovicii (18.3%). The other 14 Staphylococcus species were occasionally isolated. PCR-RFLP of the rpoB gene digested by Hpy8I was a fast and simple method to distinguish the two subspecies of S. succinus. More than 90% of the 55 S. succinus strains isolated belonged to S. succinus subsp. casei and only 9% to S. succinus subsp. succinus. Moreover, the present study describes the first ever isolation of S. fleurettii from healthy animals.  相似文献

The chromosomal complements of five species of mammals, Mus musculus (Linn.), Rattus rattus rattus (Linn.), Bandicota bengalensis (Gray and Hardw.), Funambulus pennanti (Wr.) and Lepus ruficaudatus (Geoff.) were elaborated. The karyotypes of all the species were compared. The diploid number (2n) in Mus is 40, Rattus 42, Bandicota 42, Funambulus 54 and Lepus 48. An extra large X-chromosome was observed in one population of male Rattus rattus rattus (Linn.), which might have been formed as a result of duplication of the terminal segments of both the arms of the chromosomes.  相似文献

Spoil tips associated with abandoned non-ferrous mines contain anomalously high levels of heavy metals compared with other contaminated environments. Little attention has been given to the impact of such contaminated environments on terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, lead in soil, vegetation, ground-living invertebrates and indigenous small mammal populations are reported for two derelict mines in Wales. Small mammal body and tissue lead concentrations were markedly elevated compared with control populations and with published data for other lead-contaminated areas. Oedema, intranuclear inclusion bodies and mitochondrial abnormalities—symptoms of clinical plumbism—were identified in kidney tissue in populations with highest tissue lead concentrations. The results and their relevance to other lead-contaminated areas, including roalside verges, are discussed.  相似文献

Although chromosome rearrangements (CRs) are central to studies of genome evolution, our understanding of the evolutionary consequences of the early stages of karyotypic differentiation (i.e. polymorphism), especially the non‐meiotic impacts, is surprisingly limited. We review the available data on chromosomal polymorphisms in mammals so as to identify taxa that hold promise for developing a more comprehensive understanding of chromosomal change. In doing so, we address several key questions: (i) to what extent are mammalian karyotypes polymorphic, and what types of rearrangements are principally involved? (ii) Are some mammalian lineages more prone to chromosomal polymorphism than others? More specifically, do (karyotypically) polymorphic mammalian species belong to lineages that are also characterized by past, extensive karyotype repatterning? (iii) How long can chromosomal polymorphisms persist in mammals? We discuss the evolutionary implications of these questions and propose several research avenues that may shed light on the role of chromosome change in the diversification of mammalian populations and species.  相似文献

Little is known of the biology of the majority of microparasites except for those of medical or veterinary importance. It is suggested that techniques already developed for identification and quantification of these important parasites should be modified as necessary and extended to the study of other microparasites. Isolation and maintenance of microparasites in laboratory-maintained hosts will improve these diagnostic techniques and will also allow investigation of the biology of the parasites under controlled conditions. The value of laboratory-based experiments as an adjunct to ecological studies is emphasized. Problems of interpretation are indicated.  相似文献

Emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases of wildlife origin have led pre-emptive pathogen surveillances in animals to be a public health priority. Rodents and shrews are among the most numerically abundant vertebrate taxa and are known as natural hosts of important zoonotic viruses. Many surveillance programs focused more on RNA viruses. In comparison, much less is known about DNA viruses harbored by these small mammals. To fill this knowledge gap, tissue specimens of 232 animals including 226 rodents, five shrews and one hedgehog were collected from 5 counties in Kenya and tested for the presence of DNA viruses belonging to 7 viral families by PCR. Diverse DNA sequences of adenoviruses, adeno-associated viruses, herpesviruses and polyomaviruses were detected. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that most of these viruses showed distinction from previously described viruses and formed new clusters. Furthermore, this is the first report of the discovery and full-length genome characterization of a polyomavirus in Lemniscomys species. This novel polyomavirus, named LsPyV KY187, has less than 60% amino acid sequence identity to the most related Glis glis polyomavirus 1 and Sciurus carolinensis polyomavirus 1 in both large and small T-antigen proteins and thus can be putatively allocated to a novel species within Betapolyomavirus. Our findings help us better understand the genetic diversity of DNA viruses in rodent and shrew populations in Kenya and provide new insights into the evolution of those DNA viruses in their small mammal reservoirs. It demonstrates the necessity of ongoing pathogen discovery studies targeting rodent-borne viruses in East Africa.  相似文献

A study of the prevalence and identity of Giardia spp. in small mammals of Grand Teton National Park was undertaken. All 90 montane voles examined were positive for Giardia, as were 4 pocket gophers, 1 water shrew, 4 water voles, and 2 meadow voles. 229 strains of Staphylococcus isolated from the intestines of wild small mammals (Insectivora and rodents) were analysed by phenotypic tests and 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer PCR amplification (ITS-PCR). Based on the results of three methods (phenotypical tests, API numerical profiles and ITS-PCR) 65.5% of all staphylococcal strains could be identified. The remaining strains were compared by cluster analysis with reference and identified strains. It is quite possible that, a part of unidentified strains represent hitherto undescribed species, all the more as their ITS types were not found among other members of the genus Staphylococcus. Moreover, the results show that small mammals provides a suitable new habitat for certain staphylococci.  相似文献
