Prairie deermice greater than 100 days of age and non-reproductive in laboratory populations provided with surplus food and water were paired either with fertile mates or with other inhibited population animals. Following pairing, more than 75 per cent of all animals reproduced. The rates of reproductive recovery did not differ significantly between males and females. The average time required for reproduction by population animals paired with proven mates was less than that for pairs composed of population animals. The significantly slower rate of reproductive recovery for population pairs suggests that mutual stimulation is involved in recovery and is initially lacking or minimal in these pairs. A period of physiological and behavioural adjustment following removal from the populations appears necessary before reproduction. Mechanisms preventing reproduction within the populations are unknown.  相似文献

Exogenous ACTH will cause adrenal hypertrophy and gonad dysfunction in reproductively capable male deermice. The ultrastructure of the zona fasciculata of inhibited animals is substantially different from ACTH stimulated animals which suggests that ACTH alone does not produce the inhibition. Although ACTH concentrations were variable, there was no clear demonstration that any differences existed between reproductively capable vs inhibited animals at the time when corticosterone is known to be elevated in the inhibited animals. A contributory role for ACTH in promoting inhibition is not ruled out, but neither is it likely that elevated ACTH alone accounts for the observed reproductive inhibition in animals taken from populations.  相似文献

Serum thyroxine concentrations were determined and found to be reduced in reproductively inhibited deermice selected from controlled growth laboratory populations. Daily injections of 1 microgram thyroxine in reproductively inhibited male deermice were shown to significantly increase testis weight and the number of spermatids with acrosome formation. Daily feeding of thyroxine to a controlled growth population promoted an increase in the mean weights of the reproductive organs of both sexes that was intermediate between reproductively inhibited and capable deermice. Also, two females in the population produced the first surviving young after 250 days of inhibition.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the long-term effect of enterically administered indomethacin (a prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor) on reproduction in Peromyscus maniculatus (deermice) under both laboratory and field conditions. Indomethacin-coated wheat (1 mg/kg wheat) was provided to the experimental animals in the laboratory and under field conditions ad libitum. Rat chow was also provided to the animals in the laboratory. The laboratory data indicate that the number and size of the litters from the control breeding pairs were larger (number of litters=22; average number of pups/litter=4.9) than the experimental breeding pairs (number of litters=2; average number of pups/litter=2.5) over a 100-day experimental period. Field data indicate that the number of pregnant animals, the total number of animals, and mean juvenile males and females live-trapped decreased in the experimental group with respect to the control group during the experiment. The data suggest that deermice will consume indomethacin under both laboratory and field conditions, and that it effectively inhibits reproduction on a long-term basis. It is, therefore, possible that prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors may be used to control populations of rodent pests. Additionally, the data raise questions about the effect of long-term use of nonsteroidal analgesic compounds similar to indomethacin on human reproduction.  相似文献

Sin Nombre hantavirus (SNV), hosted by the North American deermouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in North America. Most transmission studies in the host were conducted under artificial conditions, or extrapolated information from mark-recapture data. Previous studies using experimentally infected deermice were unable to demonstrate SNV transmission. We explored SNV transmission in outdoor enclosures using naturally infected deermice. Deermice acquiring SNV in enclosures had detectable viral RNA in blood throughout the acute phase of infection and acquired significantly more new wounds (indicating aggressive encounters) than uninfected deermice. Naturally-infected wild deermice had a highly variable antibody response to infection, and levels of viral RNA sustained in blood varied as much as 100-fold, even in individuals infected with identical strains of virus. Deermice that infected other susceptible individuals tended to have a higher viral RNA load than those that did not infect other deermice. Our study is a first step in exploring the transmission ecology of SNV infection in deermice and provides new knowledge about the factors contributing to the increase of the prevalence of a zoonotic pathogen in its reservoir host and to changes in the risk of HPS to human populations. The techniques pioneered in this study have implications for a wide range of zoonotic disease studies.  相似文献

Grasslands are globally declining due to habitat conversion, overgrazing, climate change, and changes in fire and drought regimes. Degraded grasslands are less able to support wildlife species, which contributes to the imperilment of many species. Biosolids are used by some ranchers as an organic amendment to support more plant growth and in turn more livestock. We worked on a large cattle ranch in central British Columbia, Canada, to determine how biosolids amendment affected small mammal populations, as mice and voles are major prey for many predators and contribute to seed dispersal and underground dynamics. We found that biosolids-amended pastures had more grass cover and supported fewer deermice (Peromyscus maniculatus) than did unamended pastures. Voles were scarce, likely due to a cyclic low. Although we sampled sites that had had biosolids applied 1 or 3 years prior to our work started, deermouse populations were similarly low across these sites. The reduction in deermice on sites with biosolids relative to unamended sites could be a signal of habitat restoration, because deermice prefer disturbed habitats rather than ones with high plant cover. Grass cover was more than twice as high on sites amended with biosolids, making these sites less suitable for deermice.  相似文献

Retinol forms retinoic acid via retinal.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hepatic cytosol from normal deermice having cytosolic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH+) also displays retinol dehydrogenase activity and converts retinol to retinoic acid, whereas cytosol from ADH- deermice lacks these enzyme activities and does not produce retinoic acid. Furthermore, microsomes from either strain do not convert retinol to retinoic acid. However, when cytosol from ADH- animals is added to the microsomes, retinoic acid is produced. The obligatory role of retinal as an intermediary step in retinoic acid formation is further shown by isotopic dilution of retinoic acid formed from labeled retinol upon addition of unlabeled retinal. Microsomal retinol dehydrogenase also catalyzes the reduction of retinal to retinol, thereby explaining the decrease in retinoic acid production from retinol in liver cytosol of ADH+ deermice when microsomes are added. Thus, the results of this study indicate that retinal is an obligatory intermediate in the hepatic production of retinoic acid from retinol and that cytosolic and microsomal retinol dehydrogenases play a key role in this process.  相似文献

Levels of norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) were measured by HPLC from the cortex, striatum and brain stem of agouti and nonagouti deermice (Peromyscus maniculatus gracilis). In the brain stem, agouti animals exhibited significantly higher NE whereas nonagouti animals had significantly higher DA. In contrast, agouti deermice had nearly twice the DA levels of nonagouti animals in both the cortex and striatum. Levels of cortical and striatal NE were similar in both color morphs, although NE in nonagouti animals was 8% higher and less variable. The variability of both NE and DA was much lower in the brain stem than in either the striatum or the cortex. This is the first evidence of a pleiotropic effect of the agouti coat-color locus on brain catecholamines.  相似文献

The contribution of peroxisomal fatty acid beta-oxidation to ethanol metabolism was examined in deermice hepatocytes. Addition of 1 mM oleate to hepatocytes isolated from fasted alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)-positive deermice in the presence of 4-methylpyrazole or to hepatocytes from fasted or fed ADH-negative deermice produced only a slight and statistically not significant increase in ethanol oxidation. Lactate (10 mM), which is not a peroxisomal substrate, showed a greater effect on ethanol oxidation. There was also a lack of oleate effect on the oxidation of ethanol by hepatocytes of ADH-positive deermice. Furthermore, in ADH-negative deermice, the catalase inhibitor azide (0.1 mM) did not inhibit the increase in ethanol oxidation by oleate and lactate. The rate of oleate oxidation by hepatocytes from fasted ADH-negative deermice was much lower than that of ethanol. These results indicate that in deermice hepatocytes, peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation does not play major role in ethanol metabolism.  相似文献

  • 1.1. First-generation laboratory animals of three populations of the isopod Porcellio scaber, collected from a reference wood, a zinc smelter area and a lead mine site, were compared with respect to effects of Cd.
  • 2.2. All populations reacted differently to Cd-contaminated food: increased Cd concentrations in the food resulted in decreased consumption and growth for the reference isopods; mine isopods were not affected by Cd and for the smelter animals Cd stimulated growth at an intermediate concentration.
  • 3.3. Since Cd concentrations in the isopod did not differ between populations, adaptation is probably based on an increased detoxification capacity.
  • 4.4. The assimilation of Cd did not affect the Cu or Zn content of the isopods although the adapted isopods regulated their Cu content on a lower level than reference isopods.

The emphasis of this presentation is that social behavior isbasically involved in the curtailment of growth of laboratorypopulations of prairie deermice through inhibiting influenceson the reproductive development and function of population animals.Reproductive inhibition is not directly related to the numbersof animals present per se since physiological characteristicsare similar between animals from populations differing widelyin density under identical conditions of the physical environment. Thus, density should be interpreted relative to social or otherbehavioral factors and we should think of animals in a populationin a qualitative as well as a quantitative sense. Populationgrowth is controlled either by cessation of reproduction orby mortality of young and while 95% of the young remain reproductivelyimmature and fail to reproduce, the weights and characteristicsof their reproductive organs differ dependent upon the mechanismby which population growth is curtailed. Mechanisms of growthcurtailment thus develop intrinsically to each population andinvolve communication through one or more of the senses of touch, smell, sight, hearing or taste. My data suggest that tactilecues from population animals (not necessarily overt aggression)may be of major importance in producing the reproductive retardationobserved although chemosignals or other stimuli such as visualor auditory cues may act to slow reproductive recovery of inhibitedanimals. Data presented support the contention of a behavioral-physiologicalrelationship distinct for each population.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine (1) the approximate time of the preovulatory LH rise in cyclic deermice, (2) the effect of indomethacin administration on plasma LH levels during the expected preovulatory LH rise, and (3) the effect of indomethacin administration on plasma LH levels in castrated male deermice. The data indicate that the preovulatory LH rise occurred at about 2200 h on proestrus and that indomethacin pretreatment significantly reduced plasma LH levels during that time. In addition, indomethacin significantly reduced plasma LH levels in castrated male deermice. We conclude that plasma LH levels remain low throughout the estrous cycle with the exception of the preovulatory “surge”, that plasma LH levels in deermice are comparable to those reported for the rat, and that indomethacin pretreatment reduced plasma LH levels during periods when they were expected to be elevated (in castrated males and during the expected preovulatory LH rise in female deermice). The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the effect of indomethacin on plasma LH levels is due to an inhibitory effect on hypothalamic PG biosynthesis.  相似文献

Summary This study addressed the relative importances of shrub resources on a rodent community in a sagebrush dominated shrub-steppe ecosystem in southwestern Wyoming. Direct effects of shrubs (i.e., providing rodents with food and cover) were assessed by removing shrubs from a 1.25 ha study plot and monitoring both rodent populations and their food resources. Shrub architecture and shrub-related food resources were found to be unimportant to deermice (Peromyscus maniculatus), Great Basin pocket mice (Perognathus parvus) northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster) and Uinta ground squirrels (Spermophilus armatus), as shrub removal caused no significant changes in population sizes, sex ratios or age structure. Least chipmunks (Eutamias minimus) responded to shrub removal by leaving the plot and moving into adjacent shrubland. The montane vole (Microtus montanus) population showed a slight increase following shrub removal. Shrub removal did not alter the abundance of major rodent food resources on the plot (percent cover of herbaceous vegetation, soil seed reserves and ground-dwelling arthropods). Micrometeorological data suggested that shrubs did not significantly ameliorate a nocturnal rodent's micro-climate, but may have affected diurnal rodents' thermal loading rates by removing shade. While shrub architecture and food resources do not directly affect most of the rodents in this shrub-steppe ecosystem, shrubs may be important to rodents in a long-term time frame. Shrubs provide safe sites for germination and growth of herbaceous vegetation, thereby enhancing the diversity of the potential rodent food resources.  相似文献

The possibility that resource limits constrain the growth of mobile epifaunal populations associated withSargassum patens plants was investigated by placing plants and associated animals into field microcosms which excluded fish predators, and then comparing faunal abundance and size-structure changes in different microcosm treatments with field populations. Four different micrososm treatments were set up: two treatments containing defaunated plants inoculated with caprellid amphipods, and two control treatments with natural faunas. The estimated secondary production of faunas enclosed in all microcosm treatments rapidly settled on a constant value (5 mg/day) which was similar to that determined in experiments conducted in Western Australia using the same microcosms but for faunas associated with a seagrass rather than a macroalga. These results support the hypothesis that the secondary production of epifaunal communities associated with macrophytes is constrained by quantifiable food resource ceilings. Predation by the most common fish species in the area, the wrasseHalichoeres tenuispinis, did not appear to alter macrofaunal production in theS. patens bed; however, it did greatly affect the faunal size-structure by eliminating most of the larger animals. The majority of epifaunal animals 2.0 mm sieve-size were consumed byH. tenuispinis, while negligible numbers of 0.5-mm sieve-size animals were captured. We postulate that food resource ceilings and predatory size-selectivity are widespread phenomena, affecting epifaunal populations at a variety of locations. Predation is predicted to generally increase rather than decrease faunal abundance because the consumption of each large invertebrate by a predator frees sufficient resources to feed several smaller individuals.  相似文献

The importance of a relative shortage of food in animal ecology   总被引:9,自引:2,他引:9
Summary It is proposed that for many if not most animals — both herbivore and carnivore, vertebrate and invertebrate — the single most important factor limiting their abundance is a relative shortage of nitrogenous food for the very young. Any component of the environment of a plant, by varying the amount of adequately nutritious plant tissue available to herbivores, may consequently affect the abundance of food through all subsequent trophic levels; in this regard weather may be important more often than is immediately obvious. The hypothesis proposes that animals live in a variably inadequate environment wherein many are born but few survive, and leads to a concept of populations being limited from below rather than controlled from above. And it may lead to a reappraisal of the role of predation, competition and social and territorial behaviour as factors likely to influence the numbers of animals in the environment, the response of pests to manipulation of populations of their food plants by Man, and the likely effectiveness of agents of biological control.  相似文献

Purpose

The expected increase in demand for food raises concerns about the expansion of agricultural land worldwide. To avoid expansion, we need to focus on increasing land productivity, reducing waste, and shifting human diets. Studies exploring diet shifts so far have ignored competition for land between humans and animals. Our objective was to study the relation between land use, the share of animal protein in the human diet, population size, and land availability and quality.

Methods

We used linear programming to determine minimum land required to feed a population a diet with 0–80 % of the protein derived from terrestrial domestic animals. Populations ranged from 15 million to the maximum number of people that could be supported by the system. The agricultural system in the Netherlands was used as illustration, assuming no import and export of feed and food. Daily energy and protein requirements of humans were fulfilled by a diet potentially consisting of grain (wheat), root and tuber crops (potato, sugar beet), oil crops (rapeseed), legumes (brown bean), and animal protein from ruminants (milk and meat) and monogastrics (pork).

Results and discussion

Land is used most efficiently if people would derive 12 % of dietary protein from animals (% PA), especially milk. The role of animals in such a diet is to convert co-products from crop production and the human food industry into protein-rich milk and meat. Below 12 % PA, human-inedible products were wasted (i.e., not used for food production), whereas above 12 % PA, additional crops had to be cultivated to feed livestock. Large populations (40 million or more) could be sustained only if animal protein was consumed. This results from the fact that at high population sizes, land unsuitable for crop production was necessary to meet dietary requirements of the population, and contributed to food production by providing animal protein without competing for land with crops.

Conclusions

A land use optimization model including crop and animal production enables identification of the optimal % PA in the diet. Land use per capita was lowest at 12 % PA. At this level, animals optimally consume co-products from food production. Larger populations, furthermore, can be sustained only with diets relatively high in % PA, as land unsuitable for crop production is needed to fulfil their food demand. The optimal % PA in the human diet depended on population size and the relative share of land unsuitable for crop production.

The apparent deuterium isotope effects on Vmax/Km (D(V/K] of ethanol oxidation in two deermouse strains (one having and one lacking hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH] were used to calculate flux through the ADH, microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system (MEOS), and catalase pathways. In vitro, D(V/K) values were 3.22 for ADH, 1.13 for MEOS, and 1.83 for catalase under physiological conditions of pH, temperature, and ionic strength. In vivo, in deermice lacking ADH (ADH-), D(V/K) was 1.20 +/- 0.09 (mean +/- S.E.) at 7.0 +/- 0.5 mM blood ethanol and 1.08 +/- 0.10 at 57.8 +/- 10.2 mM blood ethanol, consistent with ethanol oxidation principally by MEOS. Pretreatment of ADH- animals with the catalase inhibitor 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole did not significantly change D(V/K). ADH+ deermice exhibited D(V/K) values of 1.87 +/- 0.06 (untreated), 1.71 +/- 0.13 (pretreated with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole), and 1.24 +/- 0.13 (after the ADH inhibitor, 4-methylpyrazole) at 5-7 mM blood ethanol levels. At elevated blood ethanol concentrations (58.1 +/- 2.4 mM), a D(V/K) of 1.37 +/- 0.21 was measured in the ADH+ strain. For measured D(V/K) values to accurately reflect pathway contributions, initial reaction conditions are essential. These were shown to exist by the following criteria: negligible fractional conversion of substrate to product and no measurable back reaction in deermice having a reversible enzyme (ADH). Thus, calculations from D(V/K) indicate that, even when ADH is present, non-ADH pathways (mostly MEOS) participate significantly in ethanol metabolism at all concentrations tested and play a major role at high levels.  相似文献

Many emerging infectious diseases in human populations are associated with zoonotic origins. Attention has often focused on wild animal reservoirs, but most zoonotic pathogens of recent concern to human health either originate in, or are transferred to, human populations from domesticated animals raised for human consumption. Thus, the ecological context of emerging infectious disease comprises two overlapping ecosystems: the natural habitats and populations of wild animals, and the anthropogenically controlled habitats and populations of domesticated species. Intensive food animal production systems and their associated value chains dominate in developed countries and are increasingly important in developing countries. These systems are characterized by large numbers of animals being raised in confinement with high throughput and rapid turnover. Although not typically recognized as such, industrial food animal production generates unique ecosystems—environments that may facilitate the evolution of zoonotic pathogens and their transmission to human populations. It is often assumed that confined food animal production reduces risks of emerging zoonotic diseases. This article provides evidence suggesting that these industrial systems may increase animal and public health risks unless there is recognition of the specific biosecurity and biocontainment challenges of the industrial model. Moreover, the economic drivers and constraints faced by the industry and its participants must be fully understood in order to inform preventative policy. In order to more effectively reduce zoonotic disease risk from industrial food animal production, private incentives for the implementation of biosecurity must align with public health interests.  相似文献

HUnter D. M. and Webster J. M. 1973. Determination of the migratory route of botfly larvae, Cuterebra grisea (Diptera: Cuterebridae) in deermice. International Journal for Parasitology3:311–316. Cuterebra grisea larvae introduced into deermice (Peromyscus manicutatus) occurred in the nasal passages (nose or eye entry) or were associated with the esophagus and trachea (mouth entry) in the first three days after entry. During this period, some deermice exhibited a violent wheezing reaction. From day 4 to 6 after entry, larvae migrated to the final development site in the inguinal region of the deermouse. Migrating larvae were found on the front and top of the head, on the back and at the base of the tail. The similarity of this migratory path for C. grisea with the final development sites of other Cuterebra species is discussed.  相似文献
