Three experiments investigated learned helplessness in rats manipulating response requirements, shock duration, and intervals between treatment and testing. In Experiment 1, rats previously exposed to uncontrollable or no shocks were tested under one of four different contingencies of negative reinforcement: FR 1 or FR 2 escape contingency for running, and FR1 escape contingency for jumping (differing for the maximum shock duration of 10s or 30s). The results showed that the uncontrollable shocks produced a clear operant learning deficit (learned helplessness effect) only when the animals were tested under the jumping FR 1 escape contingency with 10-s max shock duration. Experiment 2 isolated of the effects of uncontrollability from shock exposure per se and showed that the escape deficit observed using the FR 1 escape jumping response (10-s shock duration) was produced by the uncontrollability of shock. Experiment 3 showed that using the FR 1 jumping escape contingency in the test, the learned helplessness effect was observed one, 14 or 28 days after treatment. These results suggest that running may not be an appropriate test for learned helplessness, and that many diverging results found in the literature might be accounted for by the confounding effects of respondent and operant contingencies present when running is required of rats.  相似文献

The physiological response of cowpea ( Vigna sinensis L.) epicotyl explants to far‐red light (FR) and its interaction with gibberellins (GAs) have been investigated. The effect of FR and GA1 varied with the age of the seedlings from which the explants were made: for FR, it decreased progressively with age (though the sensitivity of the epicotyls to FR did not change significantly until at least day 11), whereas it remained essentially constant for applied GA1 between days 5 and 9 after sowing. This indicates that the loss of response to FR may be due to a decrease in endogenous GA levels in the epicotyl. For a range of GA1 and GA20 (0.01–1 µg explant−1), both hormones were more active in FR than in R irradiated epicotyls, suggesting that phytochrome may affect GA sensitivity besides GA metabolism. The location of the epicotyl region most sensitive to FR (between 5 and 20 mm below the apex) was different from that to GAs (the upper 10 mm). Nevertheless, FR extended the region responsive to applied GAs, even in paclobutrazol‐treated epicotyls where elongation was due entirely to exogenous GAs. This means that modulation of epicotyl elongation by phytochrome, that occurs in a zone different from though overlapping with the GA‐sensitive subapical zone, is also mediated by GAs. Growth in the most FR‐sensitive region of the epicotyl stimulated by FR or GA1 was due to cell elongation, and in the most GA‐sensitive region to both cell division and elongation. The effect of FR and GA1 was negated by colchicine, indicating that microtubules may be involved in the response to both factors.  相似文献

Tillering responses to light quality in different phenological stages of a perennial warm-season grass Eragrostis curvula were investigated in controlled environments. In vegetative plants, the tillering rate was greater (P<0.01) in the high (1.1–1.3) than in the low (0.59–0.70) red:far-red ratio (R/FR) light regime. Tillering rates were higher in the low R/FR treatment when the plants in the high R/FR regime reached the reproductive stage, while the plants in the low R/FR regime remained vegetative. After the reproductive tillers were removed by defoliation, more tillers were produced in the defoliated plants grown in the high R/FR regime. When the plants in both light treatments entered the reproductive stage, the tillering rate under the two light regimes became similar, suggesting a significant interaction between tillering and inflorescence development. The more advanced inflorescence development in the high R/FR regime may have reduced assimilate availability to tiller growth and overshadowed the effect of high R/FR on tillering. Both tillering and inflorescence development appeared to be controlled by R/FR ratio. The higher rate of aerial tiller production on the reproductive culms during the post-anthesis period in the high R/FR regime suggested that high R/FR ratio stimulated not only basal tillering, but also aerial tillering.  相似文献

Forest understory plants often respond less intensely to reduced ratios of red to far red (R : FR) light, an important signal of foliage shade, than conspecific or congeneric plants from open-canopy sites. Reduced responsiveness to low R : FR in plants from closed-canopy sites could be caused by two physiological mechanisms. First, closed-canopy plants could have less sensitive shade-avoidance responses to low R : FR. Second, the high irradiance response to FR (FR-HIR), which allows seedling de-etiolation under low R : FR, might be stronger or persist longer after de-etiolation in closed-canopy plants, thus counteracting shade-avoidance responses to low R : FR. These hypotheses were tested using diodes that emit red and far-red light to distinguish the responses to altered R : FR of genotypes of Impatiens capensis collected from a pair of open- and closed-canopy populations that have previously been shown to differ in sensitivity to R : FR. Genotypes from the open-canopy environment exhibited typical shade-avoidance responses, elongating in response to supplemental FR. However, genotypes from the closed-canopy environment responded to supplemental FR by elongating less than under ambient control conditions, indicating a persistent FR-HIR. Thus, the observed population differentiation in response to low R : FR may be linked to population differences in FR-HIR.  相似文献

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) stems showed increased elongation under two types of vegetative shade: canopy shade (low red to far red [R/FR] ratio) and neighbouring proximity shade (FR enrichment). Hypocotyls also elongated more under narrow-band FR light than under narrow-band R light. Ethylene levels were determined in actively elongating 7-day-old hypocotyls and 17-day-old internodes under three R/FR ratios. Ethylene levels were lower in both sunflower hypocotyls and internodes when the R/FR ratio was reduced. Both FR enrichment of normal R/FR ratio and narrow-band FR light with very low light irradiance resulted in reduction in ethylene levels in 7-day-old hypocotyls. Further, in application experiments, sunflower stems grown under low R/FR ratio were more sensitive to ethephon and less sensitive to aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) than stems grown under high R/FR ratio. Low R/FR ratio appears to initiate reduction in ethylene levels in sunflower seedlings, allowing maximum stem elongation. These results, and findings of other authors, suggest that various plant species may have developed different ways of regulating stem elongation and ethylene levels in response to low R/FR ratio.  相似文献

Abstract. Fluence-response and reciprocity data were collected for response to end-of-day FR in several light-grown plants. Coleoptile elongation in oat and hypocotyl elongation in sunflower and mung bean are stimulated by end-of-day FR, and anthocyanin accumulation in mung bean hypocotyls is decreased by the same treatment. All responses have threshold fluences at about 200μmol m?2 and saturation fluences between 4000 and 10,000 μmol m?2 Responses to end-of-day FR were reversible by subsequent R with threshold fluences between 2.0 and 3.0 μmol m?2 and saturation fluences between 300 and 1000 μmol m2 Rapid, reverse reciprocity failure which could not be explained by escape from photoreversibility was observed only for stimulation of oat coleoptile elongation by end-of-day FR. Oats also showed apparent reverse reciprocity failure for R, but it was entirely explainable by escape. Rapid, reverse reciprocity failure is not a ubiquitous phenomenon for responses to end-of-day irradiations.  相似文献

Although the fern Platycerium bifurcatum is popular among the producers of ornamental plants, it is a species of relatively poorly known physiology. Studies concerning the impact of the red/far-red (R/FR) ratio on photomorphogenesis refer primarily to spermatophytes. However, quite different phytochrome response mechanism functions in ferns, involving the localization of physiologically active form of phytochrome in the cytoplasm, without translocation to the nucleus. This work determined the reaction of young fern sporotrophophylls to the change of the R/FR ratio and investigated sporophyte ontogeny in various spectral light composition using non-destructive testing methods. It has been shown that the development of morphogenic sporophyte depends on the R/FR ratio. At a high R/FR ratio, sporotrophophylls showed a slower growth compared to those growing at a low value. A high R/FR value resulted in lower photochemical performance of PSII and adverse changes in the functioning of the acceptor portion of the PSII reaction center, while the PSII vitality analysis indicated the positive effect of simulated shadow. The value of the R/FR ratio did not affect the intensity of blue-green leaf fluorescence. However, the fluorescence intensity of red and far-red was significantly higher in plants growing at higher R/FR values. The analysis of leaf optical properties indicated higher concentrations of carotenoids and anthocyanins in the leaves of plants grown under the lower R/FR ratio. Determining the effect of spectral light composition on the physiology of this species may be useful for plant breeders and for the protection of these epiphytes in natural habitats.  相似文献

Brassica napus L. seedlings responded to low red to far-red (R/FR) ratio by elongating petioles and decreasing leaf expansion. These typical shade avoidance traits were correlated with significantly decreased endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) levels and significantly increased endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) levels and ethylene production. The transgenic (T) B. napus line bearing the bacterial ACC deaminase gene, did not respond to low R/FR ratio with altered petiole and leaf growth and less ethylene (especially by petioles) was produced. As with WT seedlings, T seedlings had significantly lower IAA levels in both petioles and leaves under low R/FR ratio. However, ABA levels of low R/FR ratio-grown T seedlings either increased (petioles) or were unaltered (leaves). Our results further suggest that low R/FR ratio regulates endogenous IAA levels independently of ethylene, but there may be an interaction between ABA and ethylene in leaf development.  相似文献

Despite the importance of food intake, feed ration has not been determined for many crabs. Juvenile red king crabs of mean size 25–30?mm carapace length (CL) were fed to satiation with squid either once or twice weekly for 6?months. Feed ration (FR?=?consumption expressed as a proportion of wet body mass) increased to a peak of about 0.10 at 30?days premolt, dropped to 0.03 during molting, then increased to about 0.08 at 14?days postmolt. Data were analyzed using mixed-effects modeling with repeated measures. There was no significant effect of feeding frequency on FR, and no significant interaction between frequency and CL. There was a significant negative relationship between FR and CL, a significant positive relationship between FR and temperature, and a minor but significant interaction between CL and temperature. The FR for juvenile red king crabs is about half that of the ration previously reported for adult crabs. Daily feed ration is a valuable physiological index that can be used to understand the impacts of predators such as king crabs on benthic biomass in boreal ecosystems, and to determine feeding regimes for aquaculture and stock enhancement. The relationships determined by this study can be used to predict daily ration for king crabs under specific temperature conditions, and how this may vary with climate change.  相似文献

We examined photoperiodic response of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) rhizome morphogenesis (its transition to a storage organ) by using seed-derived plants. Rhizome enlargement (increase in girth) was brought about under 8, 10 and 12 h photoperiods, whereas the rhizomes elongated under 13 and 14 h photoperiods. Rhizomes elongated under 14 h light regimes supplied as 8 h of natural light plus 6 h supplemental hours of white, yellow or red light, but similar treatments with supplemental blue, green or far red light, caused enlargement in girth of the rhizomes. A 2 h interruption of the night with white, yellow or red light, in plants entrained to 8 h photoperiod brought rhizome elongation, whereas 2 h-blue, green or far red light night breaks still resulted in rhizome increase in girth. The inhibitory effect of a red (R) light night break on rhizome increase in girth was reversed by a far-red (FR) light given immediately afterwards. Irradiation with R/FR/R inhibited the rhizome increase in girth. FR light irradiation following R/FR/R irradiation cancelled the effect of the last R light irradiation. It was demonstrated that the critical photoperiod for rhizome transition to storage organ is between 12 and 13 h photoperiod. It was also evident that the optimal light quality range for interruption of dark period (night break) is between yellow and red light and that a R/FR reversible reaction is observed. From these results, we propose that phytochrome plays an important role in photoperiodic response of rhizome increase in girth in lotus. This is the first report on phytochrome-dependent morphogenesis of storage organs in rhizomous plants.  相似文献

Response of plants to elevated CO2 differs markedly between individually- and competitively-grown plants, both in terms of mean size and variation about the mean. Using Sinapis alba, we explored whether these contrasting effects are a consequence of the effect of competition on the red:far red (R:FR) light ratio. Plants were grown at both ambient and elevated (700 microl.l(-1)) CO2 in competitive stands, and as individuals at either a low (0.7) or high (1.25) R:FR ratio at a constant photosynthetic photon fluence rate. Elevated CO2 increased stand biomass by enhancing the growth of canopy dominants, but not the subordinates. As a consequence, elevated CO2 increased the coefficient of variation in size within the stands. Elevated CO2 did not enhance the growth of individually-grown plants at the low R:FR ratio, but did at the high R:FR ratio. Both the poor response of subordinate plants to elevated CO2 and the increased size inequalities of individuals within the stand can be explained in terms of the effect of the R:FR ratio on CO2 responsiveness. The effect of the R:FR ratio on CO2 response may be related to its effect on allocation patterns and nutrient uptake.  相似文献

Summary The possibility that phytochrome is involved in the promotion of flowering by far-red light was investigated. The addition of far-red (FR) to a day extension with red (R) light promotes inflorescence initiation in Lolium. A 2-hour interruption with darkness also promoted flowering compared with the uninterrupted red light control; apex length was further increased by a 10-minute FR irradiation given before the 2-hour dark interruption and was decreased by 10-minutes of R light given in the middle: both FR promotion and R inhibition were reversed by R and FR respectively. Apex length increased approximately linearly with increasing duration of dark interruption up to at least 2 1/2 hours. When varying ratios of R:FR light were substituted for a 2-hour dark period, apex length was increasingly depressed as the % R was increased above 25%; no difference between 25% R/75% FR and 100% FR could be detected. Apex length was inversely linearly related to the calculated [Pfr]/[P] ratios above about 40% Pfr.FR promoted flowering when given during a 5-hour interruption of a day extension with R light but, between 0.25 and 0.90 J m2 s-1, there was no effect of intensity of FR; at 0.11 J m-2 s-1 apex length was shorter than at 0.25 J m-2 s-1 but longer than in darkness. When the duration of FR (from the beginning of a dark interruption of a day extension with R) was varied, apex length increased with increasing duration of FR up to 1 1/4 to 2 hours but further increasing the duration of FR did not promote flowering more. The results implicate phytochrome in the promotion of flowering by FR light. It has been demonstrated that a low [Pfr]/[P] ratio (less than present in 25% R/75% FR) is needed over a relatively long period of time: this explains why a relatively high proportion of FR light must be added to R for several hours in order to give maximum promotion of flowering. It is concluded that, in Lolium, the increased flowering response to FR light is brought about by a reduction of [Pfr]/[P] ratio at the appropriate time, although the possibility that another effect of far-red is also involved has not been rigorously excluded.  相似文献

In vegetation stands, plants receive red to far‐red ratio (R:FR) signals of varying strength from all directions. However, plant responses to variations in R:FR reflected from below have been largely ignored despite their potential consequences for plant performance. Using a heterogeneous rose canopy, which consists of bent shoots down in the canopy and vertically growing upright shoots, we quantified upward far‐red reflection by bent shoots and its consequences for upright shoot architecture. With a three‐dimensional plant model, we assessed consequences of responses to R:FR from below for plant photosynthesis. Bent shoots reflected substantially more far‐red than red light, causing reduced R:FR in light reflected upwards. Leaf inclination angles increased in upright shoots which received low R:FR reflected from below. The increased leaf angle led to an increase in simulated plant photosynthesis only when this low R:FR was reflected off their own bent shoots and not when it reflected off neighbour bent shoots. We conclude that plant response to R:FR from below is an under‐explored phenomenon which may have contrasting consequences for plant performance depending on the type of vegetation or crop system. The responses are beneficial for performance only when R:FR is reflected by lower foliage of the same plants.  相似文献

The effects of red/far red (R/FR) ratios on leaf ascorbate (AA) and glutathione (GSH) accumulation were examined in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Growth under low R/FR ratios resulted in a “shade” phenotype and much lower leaf AA and GSH contents than high (R/FR) ratios. Photosynthesis rates were unaffected by changes in the R/FR ratio but leaf respiration rates, pyridine nucleotide pools and antioxidant enzyme activities were decreased under the low R/FR regime. The GSH pool changed slowly in response to altered R/FR ratios but leaf ascorbate acclimated over a single photoperiod. We conclude that light quality signals, particularly R/FR ratios, are important regulators of antioxidant synthesis and accumulation. These acclimatory changes are an early response to changing light environment.  相似文献

Treatment of the whole of aSinapis alba plant with supplementary far-red light (FR), in back-ground white light (WL), induces a rapid increase in stem extension rate. This rapid increase is regulated by the light environment of the stem itself. Supplementary FR to the stem increases extension rate after a lag period of 10–15 min. A lag period of 3–4 h follows FR irradiation of the leaf, before an increase in extension rate is detectable. When the stem is given supplementary FR, the change in extension rate which is induced increases with increasing FR fluence rate, and with decreasing phytochrome photoequilibrium. There is no difference between the effects of supplementary FR max 719 nm and supplementary FR max 739 nm for these relationships. The increase in extension rate induced by supplementary FR is reversed by an increase in the fluence rate of red light (R). These data indicate that the response is controlled by phytochrome photoequilibrium.Abbreviations B blue light - FR far-red light - R red light - WL white light - Pfr far-red absorbing form of phytochrome - Pr red absorbing form of phytochrome - Ptot total phytochrome level (=Pr+Pfr); -Pfr/Ptot, measured - ER difference in stem extension rate, before and after treatment  相似文献

Combinations of different light quality and fluence exposure times were investigated for their effects on in vitro growth of the woody plant Spiraea nipponica. An interaction was demonstrated between different levels of benzyladenine (BA) used for in vitro propagation and the specific light regimes investigated. This relationship was affected by the length of exposure to either white or red/FR light and the time of transfer from one fluence rate to another. In all instances exposure to red/FR light resulted in more extensive growth than under white light. Thus explants cultured under 0.25 and 0.4 mg l-1 of BA exhibited high shoot proliferation rates when transferred, after 4 weeks of low photon fluence red/FR light, to higher fluence white light for a further week. The proliferation rates obtained were higher than any white light treatment including that with the highest BA level of 0.5 mg l-1. In addition, the combination of red/FR light exposure with a white light stage of higher fluence improved proliferation at lower exogenous BA levels.  相似文献

We have studied photoperiodic control and the effect of phytochrome photoconversion at the end-of-day (EOD) on polyamine (PA) accumulation in petal explants of Araujia sericifera . Petals from immature flowers were cultured under long (LD) and short (SD) days. Light was provided by Gro-lux fluorescent lamps (90–100 µmol m−2 s−1). Red (R), far red (FR), red followed by far-red (R-FR) and far-red followed by red (FR-R) light treatments were applied daily at the end of the photoperiod. The free and bound putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm) fractions in petal explants were determined 40 days after the beginning of the culture. We also aimed to clarify the involvement of PA changes by using two inhibitors of PA biosynthesis: D- l -α-difluoromethylarginine (DFMA) and methylglyoxal bis (guanylhydrazone) (MGBG). We found PA accumulation to be under photoperiodic control, and the inhibitory effect of DFMA on this accumulation suggests that arginine decarboxylase (ADC) is the major pathway for Put biosynthesis. Polyamine levels were higher under LD, mainly as a result of the accumulation of free and bound Put. FR-EOD treatment, which dramatically reduced the R : FR ratio after LD, increased the accumulation of PA, mainly as free Put and free and bound Spd. Sequential R-FR and FR-R-EOD treatments strongly increased bound Spd. The concentration of MGBG used increased total PA accumulation, mainly as Put. However, all EOD light treatments dramatically reduced Put accumulation in the presence of MGBG. This may be due to a dual role of FR light in PA accumulation: (1) FR per se stimulates PA production, probably via ADC, and (2) in the presence of MGBG, FR inhibits Put accumulation, probably via ethylene production.  相似文献

The elongation growth of 5-mm tip sections of 3-day-old etiolatedwheat coleoptiles was promoted by light flashes of 436, 650and 750 nm in comparison with the dark control. As short as7/1,000 sec red light (R) of 14,420 W/m2 led to saturation ofthe R-induced growth response. At quantum-identical far-redlight (FR) irradiation, a plateau developed at about 9/1,000sec which, however, was interrupted at longer irradiation periods.Varying dark periods between R or FR activation of growth anda second FR flash, a light-independent period with a half-lifeof 45 to 60 sec was found. Only after this light-independentperiod could R or FR activation of growth be reversed by FR.A second light-independent period was found by the followingirradiation schedule: 1 sec R/100 sec darknees(D)/l sec FR/varied D/l sec R. Our experimental conditions enabled us (a) to distinguish betweenactivation and inactivation by FR, (b) to clarify the reactionchain of different phytochrome forms and (c) to determine thehalf-life of light-independent phytochrome reactions.  相似文献

Plants from a sun and shade population were grown in two environments differing in the ratio of red to far-red light (R/FR ratio). A low R/FR ratio, simulating vegetation shade, promoted the formation of long, upright-growing leaves and allocation towards shoot growth, whereas a high R/FR ratio had the opposite effects. The increase in plant height under the low R/FR ratio was accompanied by a reduction in the number of leaves. Population differences in growth form resembled the differences between plants grown in different light environments: plants from the shade population had rosettes with long erect leaves, whereas plants from the sun population formed prostrate rosettes with short leaves. Plants from the shade population were more responsive to the R/FR ratio than plants from the sun population: the increases in leaf length, plant height, and leaf area ratio under a low R/FR ratio were larger in the shade population. However, differences in plasticity were small compared to the population difference in growth form itself. We argue that plants do not respond optimally to shading and that developmental constraints might have limited the evolution of an optimal response.
