Pheromones presumably released by conspecifics amplify both the appetitive and the consummatory components of feeding in Aplysia. These effects can be mimicked by administering homogenate of the large hermaphroditic duct containing atrial gland tissue, as well as peptides from the bag cells. Identified cerebro-pedal regulator (C-PR) neuron is thought to command various behaviors that comprise the appetitive phase of feeding. In a reduced preparation, we investigated the effects on the C-PR of applying these substances to the rhinophores, the sensory organs which detect pheromones. Stimuli that excite feeding in the animal were also found to affect the C-PR. Large hermaphroditic duct homogenate caused a doubling in the firing rate of the C-PR, and amplified the response of the C-PR to other excitatory stimuli, such as touch of food to the rhinophores. Bag cell peptides (α, β and γ bag cell peptide, and egg-laying hormone) caused smaller increases in the firing rate of the C-PR. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that pheromones facilitate appetitive feeding behavior in part via their excitation of C-PR. Accepted: 28 November 1997  相似文献

In Aplysia fasciata, pheromones released by conspecifics with access to mates increase the quantity of food eaten. This effect is blocked when the chemosensory rhinophores are ablated, indicating that the rhinophores sense pheromones. The modulation of feeding by pheromones can be monitored by an increase in the amplitude of swallowing movements in the presence of conspecifics with access to mates. Atrial gland homogenates and four bag cell peptides (egg-laying hormone, and α, β, and γ bag cell peptides) amplify the swallow amplitude in a manner similar to that caused by conspecifics with access to mates, suggesting that peptides from the bag cell/atrial gland family that are released from the atrial gland into the surrounding water may be pheromones regulating feeding and reproductive behaviors. Egg laying in Aplysia is controlled by the bag cell neuroendocrine system, which releases multiple peptides during a long-lasting electrical discharge. Following the discharge, a fixed sequence of head and neck movements is performed in which two phases can be distinguished: an appetitive or preparatory phase, in which the substrate is prepared, and a consummatory phase, when the egg string is deposited. During egg laying, feeding responses are suppressed. In this study, Aplysia fasciata was used. When the movement of the egg string through the genital groove was prevented by ligation, lesions of the nerve innervating the genital pore completely abolished the consummatory egg-laying behaviors. This shows that a nervous connection between the genital pore area and the central nervous system is important for the consummatory egg-laying behaviors. We found that suppression of feeding responses to seaweed occurred only during the consummatory phase of egg laying in controls, but animals with ligated genital grooves continued to show normal responses to food. It is hypothesized that a neuronal feedback, possibly together with the bag cell peptides, is critical for the temporal organization of egg-laying behavior in Aplysia.Abbreviations CNS central nervous system - ELH egg laying hormone  相似文献

The acute administration of estradiol benzoate (EB) to the ovariectomized (OVX) rat induces low levels of lordosis while sexually appetitive behaviors (e.g., hops, darts, solicitations) are absent, yet the repeated administration of EB results in a behavioral sensitization in which lordosis is potentiated and sexually appetitive behaviors are induced. We have shown that repeated copulation attenuates the sensitization of appetitive sexual behaviors. Here, we assessed which component of male stimulation during copulation is involved in the attenuation. On 8 occasions, sexually experienced OVX Long–Evans rats were treated with 10 μg EB and 48 h later assigned to one of six groups that differed in their experience on intermediates tests (2–7). One was given repeated access to a male (EB/Male), and another was placed in the copulation chamber alone (EB/Alone) on intermediate tests. Three groups were given one of three somatosensory stimuli by the experimenter: manual flank stimulation (FLS), clitoral stimulation (CLS), or vaginocervical stimulation (VCS). Finally, the control group was left undisturbed in the animal care facility (ACF). Sexual behaviors were measured on Tests 1 and 8. VCS received from the experimenter (VCS) or from the male during copulation (EB/Male) attenuated the magnitude of the sensitization of appetitive sexual behaviors compared with those that were not brought to the testing rooms (ACF), and the effect was most pronounced on sexual solicitations. These results suggest that VCS received during penile intromission inhibits the sensitization of sexually appetitive behaviors by repeated administration of EB. As such, repeated administration of EB may oppose those mechanisms that induce estrous termination, perhaps by sensitizing inhibitory processes within the ventromedial hypothalamus that typically prevent the display of sexual behaviors (i.e., by facilitating disinhibition).  相似文献

We report a sequence of behaviors exhibited by the short-nosed fruit bat Cynopterus sphinx while feeding on fruits of Mangifera indica. They peel off the outer skin to form a feeding area of about 3–6 cm diameter. Such food preparatory behaviors were more pronounced on larger mangoes. Bats competed among themselves to feed on the mangoes that had such feeding areas exposed. Individuals that spent a considerable amount of time on food preparatory behaviors actively secured the fruits. Altogether, these behaviors indicate that Cynopterus bats might have learnt, over evolutionary time, and developed behaviors that facilitate efficient processing and feeding of fruits such as mangoes. It appears that actions exhibited by C. sphinx in peeling off the outer skin of mangoes exemplify “extractive foraging”, a behavior that is prominently known in large-brained mammals. Thus, our findings will have implications on the distribution and evolution of extractive foraging and “technical intelligence” among mammalian lineages.  相似文献

Males of the hermit crab Pagurus filholi perform precopulatory guarding behavior, and solitary males often show aggressive behavior to take away guarded females. Males behave coercively while guarding females, so direct mate choice by females seems difficult in such a situation. By performing several experiments we examined possible indirect female choice of hermit crab. Males were attached to a shell by their left cheliped to look like guarding pairs (fake guarding pairs). The shells were filled with cotton containing either seawater or pheromone water. The fake guarding pair with only seawater caused male–male combat in 60% of trials whereas with pheromone water combats occurred in 88% of trials. Mean duration of male–male combat was significantly longer in trials with drops of seawater containing pheromones than in those without pheromones. These results suggest guarding pairs themselves cause male–male combat by visual stimulation, that female sex pheromones have further significant function in the recognition of guarding pairs and intensification of male–male combat, and that females release sex pheromones while they are guarded. As a result of the combat, the larger male ended up guarding a female. This strongly suggests that females choose males indirectly by exploiting male–male competition induced by sex pheromones under male coercive behavior.  相似文献

This study confirms for a phylogenetically basal terrestrial vertebrate that dopaminergic modulations interfere with the visually directed appetitive and consummatory feeding behaviors orienting and snapping, respectively. (1) In common toads Bufo bufo, intralymphatic administration of the dopamine D2/D1-receptor agonist apomorphine led to a dose-dependent facilitation of prey-snapping in response to moving objects. The snapping activity reached a maximum 15–35 min after apomorphine injection. (2) To changes in configurational stimulus features, the basic pattern of discrimination was maintained; however, the acuity of discrimination was reduced due to the high snapping response level. (3) The apomorphine-induced facilitation of snapping was accompanied by a suppression of prey-oriented lunging and turning. Toads snapped only if prey occurred frontally in the visual field at a relatively short distance. The snapping behavior was fixed in its form and stereotyped regarding its immediate release. (4) About 90 min after apomorphine administration, prey-oriented turning behavior was restored and displayed a facilitatory rebound. (5) In comparative experiments with the species B. marinus, both prey-oriented turning and snapping responses were suppressed by apomorphine in a dose-dependent manner. (6) After pre-treatment with the dopamine antagonist haloperidol, apomorphine showed no measurable effect on the visual release of prey orienting or snapping. (7) The results contribute to the sensorimotor and the motivation hypothesis of dopamine function proposed for higher vertebrates and stimulate a comparative discussion of anatomic homologies and functional analogies. We assessed the differences in appetitive responses to visual stimuli by three species of praying mantis (Insecta: Mantodea), Tenodera aridifolia sinensis, Mantis religiosa, and Cilnia humeralis. Tethered, adult females watched computer generated stimuli (erratically moving disks or linearly moving rectangles) that varied along predetermined parameters. Three responses were scored: tracking, approaching, and striking. Threshold stimulus size (diameter) for tracking and striking at disks ranged from 3.5 deg (C. humeralis) to 7.8 deg (M. religiosa), and from 3.3 deg (C. humeralis) to 11.7 deg (M. religiosa), respectively. Unlike the other species which struck at disks as large as 44 deg, T. a. sinensis displayed a preference for 14 deg disks. Disks moving at 143 deg/s were preferred by all species. M. religiosa exhibited the most approaching behavior, and with T. a. sinensis distinguished between rectangular stimuli moving parallel versus perpendicular to their long axes. C. humeralis did not make this distinction. Stimulus sizes that elicited the target behaviors were not related to mantis size. However, differences in compound eye morphology may be related to species differences: C. humeralis’ eyes are farthest apart, and it has an apparently narrower binocular visual field which may affect retinal inputs to movement-sensitive visual interneurons.  相似文献

Analysis of stable isotope ratios is increasingly used to reconstruct diets in passerine birds, but studies of diet–tissue isotopic discrimination for this avian group are scarce. We determined 15N and 13C diet–tissue discrimination factors on whole blood in the red-throated ant tanager (Habia fuscicauda), an insectivorous–frugivorous passerine. Birds were fed an isotopically uniform, semi-synthetic diet of dog puppy dry food, soy protein isolate, wheat germ, and other ingredients, during 92 days. Average (± SD) diet–tissue discrimination was 2.6 ± 0.2‰ for N and 2.2 ± 0.1‰ for C. Nitrogen diet-tissue discrimination was similar to the values found previously in other passerines fed animal protein and it can probably be used to accurately reconstruct protein dietary origin in passerines feeding on animal protein (e.g., insects). In the case of C, diet reconstruction might be affected by metabolic routing of dietary nutrients.  相似文献

Unlike most species, after food deprivation, Siberian hamsters increase foraging and food hoarding, two appetitive ingestive behaviors, but not food intake, a consummatory ingestive behavior. We previously demonstrated (Wood AD, Bartness TJ, Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol 272: R783-R792, 1997) that increases in food hoarding are triggered by directly decreasing body fat levels through partial surgical lipectomy; however, we did not test if lipectomy affected foraging, nor if the magnitude of the lipid deficit affected food hoard size. Therefore, we tested whether varying the size of the lipectomy-induced lipid deficit and/or foraging effort affected foraging, food hoarding, or food intake. This was accomplished by housing adult male Siberian hamsters in a foraging/hoarding system and removing (x) both epididymal white adipose tissue (EWATx) pads, both inguinal white adipose tissue (IWATx) pads, or both EWAT and IWAT pads (EWATx + IWATx) and measuring foraging, food hoarding, and food intake for 12 wk. The lipectomy-induced lipid deficit triggered different patterns of white adipose tissue mass compensation that varied with foraging effort. Foraging for food (10 wheel revolutions to earn a food pellet) abolished the EWATx-induced compensation in IWAT pad mass. The magnitude of the lipid deficit did not engender a proportional change in any of the appetitive or consummatory ingestive behaviors. EWATx caused the greatest increase in food hoarding compared with IWATx or EWATx + IWATx, when animals were required to forage for their food. Collectively, it appears that the magnitude of a lipid deficit does not affect appetitive or consummatory behaviors; rather, when energy (foraging) demands are increased, loss of specific (gonadal) fat pads can preferentially stimulate increases in food hoarding.  相似文献

I tested the hypothesis that mother-young cofeeding correlates with a systematic similar food selection in wild Mayotte brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus). I simultaneously recorded the feeding behavior of 4 maternal dyad members, from infant birth to weaning, and 10–12 mo of juvenile age, during 10-min focal periods, each separated by 5-min intervals over 10 mo. I recorded the solid food items selected for each feeding behavior at the level of specific plant part, along with the distance between the 2 individuals. I considered feeding behaviors simultaneous (between the young lemurs and their mothers) when the young began to eat a food item while the mother was already eating, regardless of the separation distance. During their first year, most of the feeding events of the young brown lemurs were initiated by their mothers. However, infants also selected different food items from those chosen by their mothers in almost one-third of cases, and the food selection dissimilarity was not attributable to an increase in the distance of separation. For juveniles, dissimilar food selection was significantly lower and linked to an increase in mother-juvenile separation distance. Thus, the substantial proportion of dissimilarity in solid foods selected by the infant during the synchronized feeding behaviors strongly suggests that social influences were not food-specific and might instead drive the acquisition of group feeding activity rhythm rather than food selection habits.  相似文献

Objective: The influence of dairy product consumption on food intake and appetitive sensations was explored in a cross‐over design study with individuals who were habitually low (<1 serving/d) or high (>3 servings/d) dairy consumers. Research Methods and Procedures: Fifty‐eight participants were required to eat one portion of dairy each day (low dairy) or three portions of dairy each day (high dairy) for 7 days. After a 7‐day washout period, the opposite treatment condition was completed. Food intake and appetitive ratings were measured on each day of the treatment periods. Results: During the high‐dairy period, participants consumed 209 kcal/d more than during the low dairy period (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in subjective appetite ratings. Habitual dairy use did not influence either the appetitive or dietary findings. Discussion: These data indicate that increasing dairy consumption may lead to increased energy intake, which could potentially cause weight gain.  相似文献

A number of bioactive peptides are involved in regulating a wide range of animal behaviors, including food consumption. Vertebrate neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a potent stimulator of appetitive behavior. Recently, Drosophila neuropeptide F (dNPF) and short NPF (sNPF), the Drosophila homologs of the vertebrate NPY, were identified to characterize the functions of NPFs in the feeding behaviors of this insect. Dm-NPFR1 and NPFR76F are the receptors for dNPF and sNPF, respectively; both receptors are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Another GPCR (CG5811; NepYR) was indentified in Drosophila as a neuropeptide Y-like receptor. Here, we identified 2 ligands of CG5811, dRYamide-1 and dRYamide-2. Both peptides are derived from the same precursor (CG40733) and have no significant structural similarities to known bioactive peptides. The C-terminal sequence RYamide of dRYamides is identical to that of NPY family peptides; on the other hand, dNPF and sNPF have C-terminal RFamide. When administered to blowflies, dRYamide-1 suppressed feeding motivation. We propose that dRYamides are related to the NPY family in vertebrates, similar to dNPF and sNPF.  相似文献

The histaminergic system is one component of the ascending arousal system which is involved in wakefulness, neuroendocrine control, cognition, psychiatric disorders and motivation. During the appetitive phase of motivated behaviors the arousal state rises to an optimal level, thus giving proper intensity to the behavior. Previous studies have demonstrated that the histaminergic neurons show an earlier activation during the appetitive phase of feeding, compared to other ascending arousal system nuclei, paralleled with a high increase in arousal state. Lesions restricted to the histaminergic neurons in rats reduced their motivation to get food even after 24h of food deprivation, compared with intact or sham lesioned rats. Taken together, these findings indicate that the histaminergic system is important for appetitive behavior related to feeding. However, its role in other goal-directed behaviors remains unexplored. In the present work, male rats rendered motivated to obtain water, sex, or amphetamine showed an increase in Fos-ir of histaminergic neurons in appetitive behaviors directed to get those reinforcers. However, during appetitive tests to obtain sex, or drug in amphetamine-conditioned rats, Fos expression increased in most other ascending arousal system nuclei, including the orexin neurons in the lateral hypothalamus, dorsal raphe, locus coeruleus and laterodorsal tegmental neurons, but not in the ventral tegmental area, which showed no Fos-ir increase in any of the 3 conditions. Importantly, all these appetitive behaviors were drastically reduced after histaminergic cell-specific lesion, suggesting a critical contribution of histamine on the intensity component of several appetitive behaviors.  相似文献

The ingestion of foods is comprised of two distinct phases of behavior: appetitive and consummatory. While most food intake paradigms include both phases, the intraoral intake test emphasizes the stereotyped consummatory-phase by infusing a liquid food directly into the oral cavity. Several hypothalamic peptides have been shown to increase intake of chow in standard food intake paradigms and the current experiments sought to test whether these peptides would increase food intake in the intraoral intake paradigm. NPY, melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and orexin-A were infused into the third ventricle (i3vt) in a counterbalanced latin-square design just prior to rats getting 0.1M sucrose solution infused via indwelling intraoral catheters and compared it to intake on bottle tests with access to the same sucrose solution. On the first day, each peptide increased intraoral intake relative to saline in the between-subjects comparison. Moreover, intake of sucrose following i3vt saline increased as a function of training. By the final day of the experiment, rats receiving saline consumed as much sucrose as rats receiving NPY, MCH, or orexin-A. This finding was conceptually replicated in the second experiment in which rats drank sucrose freely from a bottle on the home cage. A third experiment directly assessed the role of previous exposure in the sucrose intake induced by NPY. Those results confirm that repeated exposure to sucrose increases baseline intake and attenuates the hyperphagic effect of NPY. These results are consistent with two conclusions: (1) NPY, MCH, and orexin-A increase both appetitive and consummatory-phase ingestive behaviors on initial exposures; (2) repeated training interacts with the effects of these orexigenic peptides.  相似文献

We fed common brushtail possums artificial diets containing a buffer and the plant secondary metabolite (PSM), orcinol, to test the hypothesis that organic acids, common products of PSM metabolism, limit feeding by common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula). We introduced several diets containing orcinol and a buffer (urinary alkalising agent) over a course of three experiments. A diet containing 2% orcinol (wet matter) caused possums to reduce their food intake immediately, but feeding returned to normal 1–2 days later. Even though possums excreted strongly acidic urine (pH 5.1) and had perturbed nitrogen metabolism, they maintained their food intake and body mass until the experiment terminated 9 days after the introduction of orcinol. Possums ate 52% less when the basal diet contained 4% orcinol. As expected, the acid loads caused a change in the composition of urinary nitrogen with possums excreting more ammonium than urea and a large amount of unidentified nitrogenous material. Supplementing the diet containing orcinol with buffer neutralised the metabolic acid load and partly restored normal nitrogen metabolism, but did not restore feeding. Also, animals eating orcinol excreted normal amounts of 3-methylhistidine, indicating no increase in muscle protein catabolism. This suggests that a limitation to the rate of detoxification or toxicosis, rather than acid loads, limits the ingestion of acid-inducing PSMs.  相似文献

The effects of scopolamine HBr (0.125?1.0 mg/kg) methscopolamine bromide (0.125?1.0 mg/kg), physostigmine sulphate (0.05?0.4 mg/kg), and neostigmine bromide (0.025?0.2 mg/kg) were studied under four different states of deprivation. The dependent measures were differentiated into two appetitive behaviors: lever pressing for food reward and for water reward. The dosages of both anticholinergic agents were effective in reducing appetitive behavior for food reward. The central acting anticholinergic (scopolamine) alone suppressed appetitive behavior for water reward. The effect of cholinesterase blockade was significantly effected by the locus of action with physostigmine suppressing both forms of appetitive behavior while the effect of peripheral cholinesterase blockade on appetitive behavior was specific to suppressing lever pressing for food reward. There were significant interactions of these agents with the deprivation conditions which were particularly evident in the effects of the less extensive acting drugs.  相似文献

The ponerine ant Ectatomma ruidum, though previously reported to possess only rudimentary recruitment ability, was found to lay chemical trails for mass recruitment to rich or difficult food sources. The pheromone originates from the Dufour's gland, a new source of trail pheromones in the primitive ant subfamily Ponerinae. During nest emigrations, E. ruidum practices stereotyped social carrying in the myrmicine mode. The discovery of this form of social carrying and of a recruitment pheromone in the Dufour's gland secretions support the hypothesis that the subfamily Myrmicinae is derived from an ectatommine ancestor. Other communication behaviors exhibited by E. ruidum include exchange of liquid food carried between the mandibles, chemical alarm communication, nest entrance marking, and an additional social carrying posture previously unknown in ants.  相似文献

Anthropogenic disturbance may affect animal behaviour and should generally be minimised. We examined how anthropogenic disturbance (24 h food deprivation) affected circadian rhythms in laboratory mussels Mytilus edulis exposed to natural light in the absence of tides. Repeated measures data were collected on mussel gape angle, exhalant pumping and valve adduction using a Hall sensor system over eight consecutive 24 h periods when exposed to two feeding conditions after 24 h food deprivation. Mussels (fed once per day at either midday or midnight) exposed to natural light showed a clear day–night rhythm with increased nocturnal activity: significantly greater gape angle, increased exhalant pumping and had significantly higher valve adduction rates. However, circadian rhythms were less clear directly after anthropogenic food deprivation, in terms of the circadian rhythm in gape angle becoming significantly more apparent over the following days. Unlike mussels fed at midnight, those fed at midday displayed no significant change in gape angle from the hour before to the hour after they were fed, i.e. mussels given food at midday reacted to this food less than mussels fed at midnight. We suggest that independent of feeding time, laboratory mussels exposed to natural light and free from anthropogenic disturbance increase feeding activity at night because their circadian rhythms are strongly influenced by light levels. This study emphasises that the behaviour of animals in the laboratory and in the wild can be altered by anthropogenic disturbances such as vibrations caused by experimental setups and artificial illumination at night.  相似文献

Immune function is potentially costly and traded-off against the expression of sexual signals, thus, making sexual advertisement a condition-dependent and honest indicator of current immunocompetence. We conducted a series of laboratory experiments using mature mealworm beetles, Tenebrio molitor, to examine whether an immunological challenge (nylon implant(s), microbial lipopolysacharides, microlatex beads) could affect the attractiveness of male pheromones or male’s survival in ad libitum and ‘water-only’ food regimes or whether pheromones signal more long-term qualities of males. We treated another set of newly-emerged males with a single nylon implant and gave first ad libitum food but later only water. We used several immune challengers and feeding regimes to examine if the expected trade-off between immune function and sexual signaling would be expressed differently depending on the resource level and the type of the immune challenge. None of the treatments affected the female preference for male pheromones or the male longevity except for the acute mortality caused by two-implant treatments. However, males lost less body mass when immune challenged and given an opportunity to feed. We conclude that females seem to prefer certain males, and the effect of immune challenge in males cannot systematically override these preferences.  相似文献
