The protein, carbohydrate and lipid contents of the food ingested and their absorption in the intestine of Heterotis niloticus inhabiting a small man-made lake; Awba Lake, in Ibadan were investigated.The ingested food had mean total protein, mean total carbohydrate and mean total lipid contents of 53.0%, 28.8% and 15.5% of the organic content, respectively. Calculated percentages absorbed were 56.4–72.7% (mean — 64.9%) total protein, 32.2–50.8% (mean — 40.3%) total carbohydrates and 71.9–87.3% (mean = 78.3%) lipid.Absorption mostly occurred in the fore-gut (the first one-third of the intestine) and least in the hind-gut (the last one-third of the intestine). Different sizes of fish showed different dietary protein, carbohydrate and lipid contents. Absorptive capacity for these components of the food also varied with fish size.  相似文献

Electrophoretic analysis of the developmental stages and tissues of Anopheles albimanus showed that qualitatively similar allozymes of aconitase (Acon-2) occur at all stages, and the enzyme is widespread in every larval and adult tissues. Relative heat stabilities of the allozymes were investigated by electrophoresis of heated aqueous extracts and by heating the enzyme in situ in acrylamide gels after electrophoretic separation in Tris-citrate and Tris-maleate buffer systems. The pupal aconitase in the crude extract is more stable to heat than the larval and adult enzyme. The presence of citrate ions in the gel increased the stability of aconitase to heat. Studies of substrate specificities indicated that cis-aconitic acid is the best substrate but citric acid can also serve as a substrate. Zymograms developed with isocitric acid as a substrate showed no aconitase electromorphs and produced only isocitrate dehydrogenase bands. Aconitase has a pH optimum of 8.0 and this enzyme is completely inhibited if treated in situ with ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA), p-chloromercuribenzoate (PCMB), and urea at concentrations higher than 5mm, 5×10–5 m, and 2 m, respectively. Acon-2100 and Acon-2105 do not respond differently to the above treatments. Genetic crosses involving a holandric translocation, pericentric inversions, visible mutants, and allozyme markers were analyzed to map the aconitase (Acon-2) locus on the left arm of chromosome 3. The gene sequence (and map distances) on 3L is centromere—esterase-8 (Est-8)—2—esterase-4 (Est-4)—25—esterase-2 (Est-2)—9—Acon-2—5—phosphoglucomutase (Pgm)—7—esterase-6 (Est-6).  相似文献

Zooplankton population structure in Rutland Water changed over the first five years of the reservoir's existence. Daphnia pulex, initially dominant was replaced by D. hyalina in late 1975 and since 1979 this latter cladoceran has coexisted for part of each year with Bosmina longirostris. Population fluctuations of all the main crustacean zooplankton — D. hyalina, Cyclops spp. and Diaptomus gracilis — were erratic in the first three years (1975–1977) but have since become more regular. The relationships of the zooplankton with their potential algal food supply and with their potential predators, the fish population, are discussed.  相似文献

Chemical concentrations and distributions in an aquatic food web were studied to quantify the relative importance of chemical properties versus food web processes in determining exposure dynamics of organic contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Five organochlorines were measured (Pentachlorobenzene QCB, Hexachlorobenzene HCB, Octachlorostyrene OCS, Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene DDE and Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBs) in the food web of Lake St. Clair. Levels of QCB in aquatic organisms ranged from 1.0 to 25 µg kg–1 lipid, and levels of HCB ranged from 10 to 410 µg kg–1 lipid. More elevated concentrations of OCS (13 to 392 µg kg–1 lipid), DDE (162 to 11 986 µg kg–1 lipid) and PCB (650 to 64 900 µg kg–1 lipid) were observed. Organism — water equilibrium ratios were calculated for all species sampled to quantify the importance of food web processes in regulating contaminant exposure dynamics. Correlations of organism — water equilibrium ratios with body size were not significant for QCB, HCB and OCS (P>0.1), but were found to be significant for DDE and PCB (P<0.01).Results support the conclusion that both chemical properties and food web dynamics regulate the distribution and concentration of organochlorines in aquatic ecosystems. Food web processes are important, however, for chemicals, that are not metabolized and have octanol — water partition coefficients (log K ow) greater than 5.5.  相似文献

An esterase locus (Est-2), coding for carboxylesterase, and an acid phosphatase locus (Acph) were genetically studied by agar gel electrophoresis in the mosquito Aedes (Finlaya) togoi. The Est-2 and Acph variants occur as a monomer and a dimer, respectively. Both enzyme loci are linked to the sex locus (M) and s (straw-colored larva); the gene arrangement and recombination distances were Est-2—12.6%—s—31.7%—M—2.9%—Acph—3.2%—Est-3. An experimental system incorporating a computerized micro-impedance unit has been used to make direct measurements of the activity of copepod cephalic appendages. As the appendages are used to both propel the copepod through water and handle particles, it follows that appendage activity reflects feeding behaviour.To investigate the sensory feeding behaviour of copepods, their activity was recorded with food stimuli varying in size and chemical composition. Sample impedance traces are given for the appendage movements of Temora longicornis in the presence of: 1 — filtered seawater; 2 — beads; 3 — phytoplankton cells; 4 — dissolved free amino acids. The normal appendage movements shown in filtered seawater were modified when copepods were offered particles and dissolved chemicals. Results show that chemical and mechanical stimuli are responsible for the recognition and selection of food. Impedance traces distinguish between behavioural responses such as: antennule flicks, leg kicks, combing, handling and rejection of particles. Spectral analyses of traces have demonstrated that differences in beat pattern are significant.Paper presentation, at the Third International Conference on Copepoda. Die Handschwingen werden beiFalco peregrinus meist in der Reihenfolge 4 — 5 — 3 — 6 — 7 — 2 — 8 — 1 — 9 — 10, beiFalco feldeggi, F. mexicanus, F. cherrug undF. rusticolus dagegen meist in der Reihenfolge 4 — 5 — 6 — 3 — 7 — 2 — 8 — 9 — 1 — 10 vermausert. Die Steuerfedern fallen beiF. peregrinus in der Reihenfolge 1 — 2 — 3 — 6 — 4 — 5, beiF feldeggi, F. mexicanus undF. cherrug dagegen in der Reihenfolge 1 — 2 — 6 — 3 — 4 — 5. Diese Unterschiede sind statistisch gesichert. Sie sind ein weiterer Beweis dafür, daßFalco feldeggi undFalco cherrug (undFalco rusticolus) enger miteinander verwandt sind als mitF. peregrinus. Summary A cytogenetic map of the whole 1 R chromosome of rye has been made, with distances between adjacent markers shorter than 50% recombination. Included in the map are isozyme loci Gpi-R1, Mdh-R1 and Pgd2, the telomere C-bands of the short arm (ts1) and the long arm (tl1), two interstitial C-bands in the short arm proximal to the nuclear organizing region (NOR) (is1) and in the middle of the long arm (il1), respectively, and translocation T273W (Wageningen tester set). By means of electron microscope analysis of spread pachytene synaptonemal complexes, the breakpoint of this translocation was physically mapped in the short arm of 1R, proximal to NOR, and in the long arm of 5R (contrary to previous assumptions). The data indicated the marker order: ts1 — Gpi-R1 — is1 — T273W/Mdh-R1 — il1 — Pgd2 — tl1. A comparison between genetic and physical maps revealed that recombination is mainly restricted to the distal regions of both arms. For the translocation T273W, in heterozygotes no recombinants were observed between the translocation breakpoint and its two adjacently located markers (is1 and Mdh-R1), but recombination was not reduced in the distal regions of the chromosome. The segregations of several other isozyme and C-band markers also analyzed in the investigation presented here were consistent with observations of earlier authors concerning chromosome asignment and linkage relationships.  相似文献

The specific activity and the kinetic properties of partly purified pyruvate kinase (PK) (EC 2.7.1.40) from the Northern Krill, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, were investigated in relation to varying food resources. In order to evaluate the effect of starvation on the total energy metabolism, the respiration rates of fed and unfed krill were determined. The FPLC–elution profile of PK displayed two distinct peaks — PK I and II. The first isoform represented 80% of the total PK activity in the organism, and 20% was contributed by the second isoform. PK I was inhibited by ATP but was not influenced by fructose–1,6–bisphosphate (FBP). In contrast, PK II showed ATP inhibition and up to 2.5-fold increased activity by addition of 17 μmol·l−1 FBP. The Michaelis–Menten constants of both isoforms were 2–10-fold higher for ADP than for phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP). Alanine showed no regulatory effect on PK I and II. In specimens starved for 7 days oxygen consumption decreased by 20%. Neither the feeding experiments nor the animals captured in the field during low and high productive seasons indicate that PK properties of M. norvegica are modified in relation to food supply. Accordingly, alternative mechanisms are involved in the depression of the metabolic rate in terms of oxygen consumption.  相似文献

Summary The behavior of nectar-collecting honeybees (Apis mellifica) at a glass sugar-water contained and at various plants was observed, and these food sources were compared with regard to duration of the bee's sojourn in the collecting area and the number of single visits per sojourn. Meagre — but continuous — nectar secretion by the flowers of bee-pollinated plants, when combined with a small distance between the individual flowers, results in a high number of flowers visited during a sojourn in the collecting area.  相似文献

The giant aflagellate spermatozoa of P. quadrioculatum are composed of two different parts: a thicker head piece and a more slender tail piece. In the head there exist a large elongated nucleus and an elongated mitochondrial derivative situated in a groove-like cavity of the nucleus. In mature spermatozoa the nuclear material is arranged in many small membrane bounded areas. Both structures, nucleus and mitochondrial derivative, are spirally coiled. The outer part of the membrane in the mitochondrial derivative forms many loop-like foldings. Both organelles continue to the tail in form of two small, helically coiled ribbons; the nucleus is anchored within the mitochondrial derivative by an electron-opaque process. A sheath of spirally-orientated cortical microtubules starting from the tip of the head runs to the tip of the tail under the cell membrane. Summary The aim of this investigation was to find out why some antarctic seals tolerate fluoride levels in their food (krill) that would be toxic to man. The fluoride content of different soft and hard tissues, urine and feces from 16 L. carcinophagus, 13 L. weddelli and 2 A. tropicalis (urine only) were determined by the fluoride sensitive electrode or by a photometric method (urine). Results and conclusions are following: All soft tissues have low concentrations of fluoride in the same range as soft tissues from non antarctic and non krill eating marine or terrestrial vertebrates. But within the soft tissues there are significant differences in the fluoride content (blood: 0.001 ppm F/dw — brain: 9.1 ppm F/dw). A special tolerance for fluoride of soft tissues can be excluded. Compared with man or weddell-seals the crabeater-seals store two times more fluoride in their skeleton. Hard structures that stop their mineralisation early in the development like teeth have only a relatively low fluoride content. For the same reason only neglectable amounts of fluoride could be detected in hair. Fluoride excretion by the kidneys is efficient and is — besides the storage of fluoride in the skeleton — the second mechanism to guarantee a good blood homoiostasis for fluoride. Until now it is impossible to decide how much fluoride from the food is resorbed by the digestive tract.  相似文献

We investigated food sharing behavior in 5 litters of pied bare-faced tamarins (Saguinus bicolor bicolor)—8 infants, from 3 families—from 5 to 26 weeks of age. The frequency of sharing by parents in response to infant begging increased steadily from the age of 5 weeks to 16 weeks, and then declined. Offering of food by adults without prior infant begging occurred at very low frequencies throughout observations (1.5% of total items transferred). On average, infants received approximately equal amounts of food from transfers from others and by self feeding until about 20 weeks, after which self feeding began to predominate. Begging success—the proportion of infant begs which resulted in food sharing—remained relatively constant over time, at 60–70%. Overall, therefore, the frequency of food sharing seemed to be governed by changes in infant rather than adult behavior. There were individual differences between adults in their response to infant begging, but two of three fathers transferred significantly more food to infants than mothers did. The results of this study emphasize the existence of specific and individual differences in food-sharing behavior, which must be taken into account in explaining its importance in the reproductive strategies of the Callitrichidae.  相似文献

Restriction endonuclease fragment length variations (RFLV) were detected in mice with DNA probes for myelin basic protein (Mbp), glucocorticoid receptor-1 (Grl-1), and Friend MuLV integration site-2 (Fim-2). RFLV of theMbp gene were found inSacI restriction patterns, RFLV of theGrl-1 gene were found inEcoRV patterns, and RFLV of theFim-2 were found inBglII patterns. A three-point backcross was carried out by the backcross mating (C57BL/KsJ-spm/spm × MOL-MIT)F1 males × C57BL/KsJ-spm/spm; spm is an autosomal recessive gene causing sphingomyelinosis. From the results,spm, Grl-1, Fim-2, andMbp loci were mapped on chromosome 18, and the following order of genes is proposed, with distances between genes in parentheses: centromere—spm—(7.8 cM)—Grl-1—(7.8 cM)—Fim-2—(39.1 cM)—Mbp—telomere. All laboratory strains and two European subspecies (Mus mus domesticus andM. m. brevirostris) carry theGrl-1 a ,Fim-2 a , andMbp a alleles. In contrast, another wild subspecies from Europe (M. m. musculus) and some Asian subspecies (M. m. molossinus, Chinese mice of wild origin, andM. m. yamashinai) carry theGrl-1 b ,Fim-2 b , andMbp b alleles. Onlycastaneus strains carry the intermediate combination of theGrl-1 b ,Fim-2 a , andMbp b alleles.  相似文献

To establish the location of the semidwarf gene, sd-1, the anthocyanin activator (A), purple node (Pn), purple auricle (Pau), and the isozyme locus, EstI-2, in relation to DNA markers on the molecular linkage map of rice, 20 RFLP markers, previously mapped to the central region of chromosome 1 (McCouch et al. 1988), were mapped onto an F2 population derived from the cross Taichung 65 (A,Pn,Pau)/Taichung 65 (sd-1). sd-1 and EstI-2 were determined to be linked most tightly to RFLP markers RG 109 and RG 220, which cosegregated with each other. The distance between these RFLP markers and sd-1 was estimated to be 0.8 cM, based on an observed recombination value of 0.8%. The order of genes and markers in this region of chromosome 1 was determined to be sd-1 — (EstI-2 — RG220 — RG109) — RG381 — APnPau. To test the efficacy of selection for sd-1 based on these linked markers, 50-day-old F2 seedlings derived from another cross, Milyang 23/Gihobyeo, were analyzed for marker genotype. At this age, the semidwarf character could not be clearly detected based on phenotype. In addition, plant height was normally distributed in this population, making it difficult to unambiguously identify plants carrying sd-1. Thirteen seedlings homozygous for the sd-1-associated allele at EstI-2, RG220 and RG109, and 13 seedlings homozygous for the Sd-1-associated allele at all three marker loci were selected for further genetic analysis. At 20 days after heading, the culm lengths of these 26 plants were measured and the expected phenotype was confirmed in every case. These 26 plants were then selfed for four generations and F6 lines were again evaluated to determine whether any recombination among the three molecular markers, or between these markers and the sd-1 gene, could be detected. No recombinants were identified, confirming the tight linkage of these loci and the usefulness of genotypic selection for this recessive semidwarf character prior to the time when it can be evaluated based on phenotype.  相似文献

TheOmphalotaceae fam. nov., which include the generaOmphalotus andLampteromyces, are defined on the basis of characteristic sesquiterpenes and of their ability to cause white-rot. Anatomical and morphological features of the representatives of these genera support the creation of this new family. The occurrence of pigments, typical of theBoletales, and of cyanophilous spores, indicate membership of theOmphalotaceae in the orderBoletales. Relationships to the other families of this order — especially to thePaxillaceae — are discussed. The possible functional significance of fungal metabolites is considered.

Summary Five new methods, based upon the selective oxidation of sialic acid residues with 0.4mm periodic acid in approximately 1m hydrochloric acid at 4°C for 1 h (PA*), have been devised for the simultaneous visualization of neutral sugars and either sialic acid and its side chainO-acyl variants orO-sulphate ester. In the first of these, the selective periodate oxidation—borohydride reduction—saponification—selective periodate oxidation—Thionin Schiff—saponification—borohydride reduction—periodic acid—Schiff (PA*—Bh—KOH—PA*—T—KOH—Bh—PAS) technique, sialic acids withO-acyl substituents at C7, C8 or C9 (or which have two of three side chainO-acyl substituents) stain blue while neutral sugars with periodate-sensitivevicinal diols (hexose, 6-deoxyhexose, andN-acetylhexosamine) stain magenta. The second method, the saponification—selective periodate oxidation—Thionin Schiff—saponification—borohydride reduction—periodic acid—Schiff (KOH—PA*—T—KOH—Bh—PAS), stains all sialic acids blue and neutral sugars magenta. In the third procedure, the selective periodate oxidation—Thionin Schiff—borohydride reduction—periodic acid—Schiff—saponification (PA*—T—Bh—PAS—KOH) method, sialic acids without side chain substituents (or which have anO-acyl substituent at C7) stain blue and neutral sugars stain magenta. In the fourth method, the saponification-selective periodate oxidation—borohydride reduction—Alcian Blue pH 1.0—periodic acid—Schiff (KOH—PA*—Bh—AB1.0—PAS) technique,O-sulphate esters stain aquamarine blue and neutral sugars stain magenta. In all of these techniques mixtures of the components stain in various shades of purple. Performance of the KOH—PA*—Bh—AB1.0—PAS technique without the Alcian Blue pH 1.0 step provides a method for the selective identification of neutral sugars in macromolecules that also contain sialic acids.  相似文献

Synopsis Observations were made on intra- and interspecific aggressive interactions among the fishes living in the rubble/sand coral reef habitat in St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. Four species (beaugregory — Stegastes leucostictus; ocean surgeonfish — Acanthurus bahianus; doctor fish — A. chirurgus; common squirrelfish — Holocentrus rufus) which sheltered in holes on the reef all actively defended one to several shelter sites at dusk. Short-term shelter side fidelity was observed in three of these four species. Agonistic interactions over both food and shelter occurred during the daytime but much less frequently than agonistic interactions over shelter at dusk. Dominance in intraspecific aggression was determined almost completely by the relative sizes of the individuals involved, with the larger individuals dominating in 95–98% of all encounters. A similar, but less strong, relationship between size and dominance existed for interactions between closely related species. For aggressive encounters between unrelated species, however, both relative sizes and species identity determined the outcome. Species, both diurnal and nocturnal, which strongly defend several shelter sites may have a strong and disproportionate impact on the sheltering behavior of other fishes. Intraspecific and interspecific defense of shelter sites may determine the patterns of mortality that result from predation, thereby influencing population abundances and assemblage composition.  相似文献

A goal of conservation biology is to determine which types of species are most susceptible to habitat disturbance and which types of disturbed habitats can support particular species. We studied 20 forest fragments outside of Kibale National Park, Uganda, to address this question. At each patch, we determined the presence of primate species, tree species composition, patch size, and distance to nearest patch. We collected demographic, behavioral, and dietary data for Abyssinian black-and-white colobus (Colobus guereza). Black-and-white colobus and red-tailed guenons (Cercopithecus ascanius) were in almost all fragments; Pennant's red colobus (Procolobus pennantii) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were in some fragments; and blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis) and gray-cheeked mangabeys (Lophocebus albigena) were absent from all fragments. No species characteristics—home range, body size, group size, or degree of frugivory—predicted the ability of species to live in patches. No characteristics of patches—area, distance to the nearest patch, distance to Kibale, or number of food trees present—predicted the presence of a particular species in a patch, but distance to Kibale may have influenced presence of red colobus. Black-and-white colobus group size was significantly smaller in the forest patches than in the continuous forest of Kibale. For a group of black-and-white colobus in one patch, food plant species and home range size were very different from those of a group within Kibale. However, their activity budget and plant parts eaten were quite similar to those of the Kibale group. The lack of strong predictive variables as well as differences between other studies of fragmentation and ours caution against making generalizations about primate responses to fragmentation.  相似文献
