The aim was to apply a multimarker scoring approach as complementary to freshwater monitoring programmes carried out by the Water Agency Adour-Garonne. Fish (chub, barbel and trout) were collected in 11 sites in rivers in south-west France. Five biomarkers of response were measured either in muscle or brain for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and in liver for glutathione S-transferase, catalase and 7-ethoxyresorufine O-deethylase. As a result of multivariate analysis, sites were clearly discriminated mainly by 7-ethoxyresorufine O-deethylase and acetylcholinesterase activities. According to the scoring approach, a multimarker pollution index was calculated for each sampling site as the sum of the response index of the five measured biomarkers (pollution index). Sorting was established by ranging the sites from lightly to highly contaminated locations. 相似文献

Biomarkers are becoming increasingly important in toxicology and human health. Many research groups are carrying out studies to develop biomarkers of exposure to chemicals and apply these for human monitoring. There is considerable interest in the use and application of biomarkers to identify the nature and amounts of chemical exposures in occupational and environmental situations. Major research goals are to develop and validate biomarkers that reflect specific exposures and permit the prediction of the risk of disease in individuals and groups. One important objective is to prevent human cancer. This review presents a commentary and consensus views about the major developments on biomarkers for monitoring human exposure to chemicals. A particular emphasis is on monitoring exposures to carcinogens. Significant developments in the areas of new and existing biomarkers, analytical methodologies, validation studies and field trials together with auditing and quality assessment of data are discussed. New developments in the relatively young field of toxicogenomics possibly leading to the identification of individual susceptibility to both cancer and non-cancer endpoints are also considered. The construction and development of reliable databases that integrate information from genomic and proteomic research programmes should offer a promising future for the application of these technologies in the prediction of risks and prevention of diseases related to chemical exposures. Currently adducts of chemicals with macromolecules are important and useful biomarkers especially for certain individual chemicals where there are incidences of occupational exposure. For monitoring exposure to genotoxic compounds protein adducts, such as those formed with haemoglobin, are considered effective biomarkers for determining individual exposure doses of reactive chemicals. For other organic chemicals, the excreted urinary metabolites can also give a useful and complementary indication of exposure for acute exposures. These methods have revealed ‘backgrounds’ in people not knowingly exposed to chemicals and the sources and significance of these need to be determined, particularly in the context of their contribution to background health risks. 相似文献

Environmental rehabilitation budgets are often limited, and management actions need to be prioritised to achieve the best outcomes. Prioritisation can best be done when evidence informs the decision‐making process. We acoustically tagged twenty Golden Perch (Macquaria ambigua) in the Loddon River, Australia, and tracked their movements to gain an understanding on the requirements for fish passage at a major regulating structure, the Box Creek regulator. The movements of these fish were monitored through a network of receivers located throughout the lower Loddon River and Pyramid Creek system. Five fish moved 50–120 km upstream, four of which reached the Box Creek regulator before moving back downstream to the entrance of the Kerang Lakes system. Most long distance upstream movements were associated with an increase in river discharge. The remaining 15 fish moved <20 km, with all fish being detected at least once. This pilot study indicates that Box Creek regulator is acting as a barrier for some fish within the Loddon River system. Movement data also indicate that Golden Perch migration pathways may be influenced by river discharge. The management implications of this work includes the need to reinstate fish passage at Box Creek regulator and the potential use of environmental flows to enhance colonisation of native fish species throughout the Murray Darling Basin. 相似文献

The northern end of Lake George, Uganda, and its associated wetlands receive localized metal pollution from a former copper mine and tailings left after metal extraction. The aim of this study was to determine (i) whether the heavy metals are a threat to the biology of the major commercial fish species and (ii) whether consumption of the fish threatens human health. Concentrations of copper, zinc, cobalt and nickel in detrital sediments, plankton, and five fish species from sites in Lake George, the Kazinga Channel and Lake Edward (which are inter-connected) were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The detrital sediments of Hamukungu Bay, Lake George, had average concentrations (g/g dry weight) of 96.3 zinc, 270.4 copper, 57.4 cobalt and 42.8 nickel. There were no significant differences between the Hamukungu Bay and the North Lake George site of Bushatu: both receive inflows from the mining activities. Concentrations of copper and zinc were significantly higher than background values from unpolluted freshwater ecosystems. Plankton samples showed a metal concentration gradient consistent with a gradient from the source of pollution in northern Lake George, along the Kazinga Channel to Lake Edward. The liver tissues of fish had markedly higher concentrations of copper and zinc than flesh. Concentrations of cobalt and nickel were relatively low. The highest mean concentrations of metals in liver tissue occurred in Oreochromis leucostictus (189.0 g/g Cu) and Bagrus docmac (187.5 g/g Zn) whilst the lowest occurred in Oreochromis niloticus (15.3 g/g and 78.2 g/g dry weight copper and zinc, respectively). However, O. niloticus contained the highest concentrations of cobalt (11.2 g/g) and nickel (3.8 g/g). Liver Somatic Indices (LSI) of the fish species from the different sites indicated a reduction of LSI in those fish from the most contaminated zones of northern Lake George compared with all other sites. This suggests there could be anatomical and physiological abnormalities linked to the heavy metal pollution. The flesh had only low concentrations of metals; well within international guidelines for consumption. A person would have to consume 9 kg of fresh flesh of Clarias sp. and 65 kg of O. leucostictus daily to exceed the WHO recommended intake for copper, and even more for other metals. This implies that currently metal pollution in Lake George presents an ecological rather than a human health concern. 相似文献

Estuaries are dynamic environments at the land–sea interface that are strongly affected by interannual climate variability. Ocean–atmosphere processes propagate into estuaries from the sea, and atmospheric processes over land propagate into estuaries from watersheds. We examined the effects of these two separate climate‐driven processes on pelagic and demersal fish community structure along the salinity gradient in the San Francisco Estuary, California, USA. A 33‐year data set (1980–2012) on pelagic and demersal fishes spanning the freshwater to marine regions of the estuary suggested the existence of five estuarine salinity fish guilds: limnetic (salinity = 0–1), oligohaline (salinity = 1–12), mesohaline (salinity = 6–19), polyhaline (salinity = 19–28), and euhaline (salinity = 29–32). Climatic effects propagating from the adjacent Pacific Ocean, indexed by the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO), affected demersal and pelagic fish community structure in the euhaline and polyhaline guilds. Climatic effects propagating over land, indexed as freshwater outflow from the watershed (OUT), affected demersal and pelagic fish community structure in the oligohaline, mesohaline, polyhaline, and euhaline guilds. The effects of OUT propagated further down the estuary salinity gradient than the effects of NPGO that propagated up the estuary salinity gradient, exemplifying the role of variable freshwater outflow as an important driver of biotic communities in river‐dominated estuaries. These results illustrate how unique sources of climate variability interact to drive biotic communities and, therefore, that climate change is likely to be an important driver in shaping the future trajectory of biotic communities in estuaries and other transitional habitats. 相似文献

A multivariate measure of river quality, the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI), was adapted to a West African river, the Konkoure (Republic of Guinea). Fish assemblages were sampled using gill-nets during the dry season to provide data for the IBI. Ten metrics were subsequently defined. The capacity of the modified IBI to assess the impact of a bauxite treatment plant was tested. The IBI decreased as expected at the impacted station. Detailed examination of the data revealed that one family, the Mormyridae, was almost eliminated from the impacted station, suggesting that members of this familiy can be considered as intolerant species in future uses of the IBI in other African rivers. 相似文献

Modification of an index of biotic integrity based on fish assemblages to characterize rivers of the Seine Basin,France 总被引:8,自引:6,他引:8
The Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) is a measure of fish assemblage health that has been used to assess catchment and stream quality throughout North America. It reflects human perturbations on natural environmental structures and processes. While preserving the ecological foundation of the original North American metrics, we have modified and adapted the IBI to the mainstem Seine River and its major tributaries in France. This successful modification of the IBI to a considerably different fish fauna on a different continent further supports its wider use outside the midwestern United States. Using data collected in 1967, 1981, and 1988–1989 from a total of 46 sites, we show spatial and temporal variation in the Seine as indicated by IBI scores. Statistically significant relationships were found between IBI and catchment area but insignificant relationships existed between IBI and an independent Water Quality Index (WQI) based on water chemistry. Comparisons between the IBI and the WQI indicate that the former is a more sensitive and robust measure of water body quality. Our results demonstrate that the IBI, combined with a statistically designed national monitoring program, would offer a reliable means of assessing spatial patterns and temporal trends in water body improvement or degradation in France. The more primitive fish families in the Basin were affected first by perturbations. These families include all the diadromous species found in the Seine and suggest serious disruption of their life histories. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to investigate the existence of day-night differences in the time for anesthesia and recovery in tambaqui exposed to the anesthetic eugenol and the influence of feeding time. Thus, we evaluated: (1) swimming activity; (2) food anticipatory activity (FAA) as a synchronizer of swimming activity and change to susceptibility to anesthetic; and (3) the effects of diurnal/nocturnal anesthesia exposure of fish feeding in the mid-light phase: 12:00 h (ML) and fish feeding in the mid-dark phase: 00:00 h (MD). Our findings revealed strictly nocturnal activity for tambaqui (94.2%), known as diurnal fish to date. Moreover, FAA was observed in tambaqui fed at MD, which showed a sustained increase in activity that began 2 h before feeding time and lasted until feeding. In contrast, no FAA was observed in fish fed at ML. Regarding anesthesia by day or night, the tambaqui treated with eugenol exhibited no difference in induction time. However, differences were observed in recovery times, with fish anesthetized at day recovering in 1–2 min and fish anesthetized at night recovering in 5–7 min. In short, our findings revealed for the first time the nocturnal behavior of tambaqui. These results indicated that recovery by day/night by eugenol in tambaqui has a strong dependence of behavioral patterns and the time of day. 相似文献

近年来, 生物多样性监测网络的建设得到广泛重视, 全球、地区或国家生物多样性观测网不断组建。生物多样性观测的理论框架得到发展, 提出了生物多样性核心监测指标(Essential Biodiversity Variables, EBV)。鱼类多样性监测的理论框架包含于生物多样性核心监测指标之内, 在遗传、物种、生态系统等多层次进行。基于鱼类监测提出的生物完整性指数(index of biotic integrity, IBI)强调不同物种的生态功能, 可以综合反映群落结构和功能的变化, 得到广泛应用。鱼类多样性的监测方法是传统网具和现代水声学等方法的结合。监测结果的分析可以进行简单的指数比较, 也可以进行长期的趋势分析, 寻找关键节点, 探讨宏观生态格局的变化。中国内陆水体鱼类多样性监测网隶属于中国生物多样性监测与研究网络, 拟选取长江、黄河、黑龙江、珠江、澜沧江、怒江、塔里木河及青海湖8大流域, 对25个重要区域和24个重点物种(类群)进行监测, 从重要区域鱼类群落结构、重点物种(类群)种群动态和个体生物学特征、遗传多样性、早期资源等不同层次, 全面监测我国内陆水体鱼类生物多样性状况。 相似文献

Aim To assess the potential impacts of future climate change on spatio‐temporal patterns of freshwater fish beta diversity. Location Adour–Garonne River Basin (France). Methods We first applied an ensemble modelling approach to project annually the future distribution of 18 fish species for the 2010–2100 period on 50 sites. We then explored the spatial and temporal patterns of beta diversity by distinguishing between its two additive components, namely species turnover and nestedness. Results Taxonomic homogenization of fish assemblages was projected to increase linearly over the 21st century, especially in the downstream parts of the river gradient. This homogenization process was almost entirely caused by a decrease in spatial species turnover. When considering the temporal dimension of beta diversity, our results reveal an overall pattern of decreasing beta diversity along the upstream–downstream river gradient. In contrast, when considering the turnover and nestedness components of temporal beta diversity we found significant U‐shaped and hump‐shaped relationships, respectively. Main conclusions Future climate change is projected to modify the taxonomic composition of freshwater fish assemblages by increasing their overall similarity over the Adour–Garonne River Basin. Our findings suggest that the distinction between the nestedness and turnover components of beta diversity is not only crucial for understanding the processes shaping spatial beta‐diversity patterns but also for identifying localities where the rates of species replacement are projected to be greatest. Specifically we recommend that future conservation studies should not only consider the spatial component of beta diversity but also its dynamic caused by climate warming. 相似文献

Ecological monitoring contributes to the understanding of complex ecosystem functions. The diets of fish reflect the surrounding environment and habitats and may, therefore, act as useful integrating indicators of environmental status. It is, however, often difficult to visually identify items in gut contents to species level due to digestion of soft‐bodied prey beyond visual recognition, but new tools rendering this possible are now becoming available. We used a molecular approach to determine the species identities of consumed diet items of an introduced generalist feeder, brown trout (Salmo trutta), in 10 Tasmanian lakes and compared the results with those obtained from visual quantification of stomach contents. We obtained 44 unique taxa (OTUs) belonging to five phyla, including seven classes, using the barcode of life approach from cytochrome oxidase I (COI). Compared with visual quantification, DNA analysis showed greater accuracy, yielding a 1.4‐fold higher number of OTUs. Rarefaction curve analysis showed saturation of visually inspected taxa, while the curves from the DNA barcode did not saturate. The OTUs with the highest proportions of haplotypes were the families of terrestrial insects Formicidae, Chrysomelidae, and Torbidae and the freshwater Chironomidae. Haplotype occurrence per lake was negatively correlated with lake depth and transparency. Nearly all haplotypes were only found in one fish gut from a single lake. Our results indicate that DNA barcoding of fish diets is a useful and complementary method for discovering hidden biodiversity. 相似文献

稳定同位素技术广泛地用于描绘生态系统中食物网的食物来源和营养级关系,但是消费者不同组织转化率的研究相对较少。通过锦鲤摄食人工添加15N蓝藻的食性转化实验,研究不同组织N同位素转化率的差异,探讨组织生长和代谢对同位素转化的相对贡献,为不同时间尺度的稳定同位素研究取样奠定基础。结果表明,通过42d的加富蓝藻饲喂,各组织的N稳定同位素发生显著变化。肝的δ15N为(19.3±1.4)‰,显著高于其它组织,其次为鱼鳍((15.6±1.0)‰)和血液((12.6±0.4)‰),肌肉的δ15N‰最低,为(9.9±0.7)‰。在随后的同位素稀释实验中,锦鲤的体重增加,相对生长速率为0.011d-1,鳍肉的转化率最快,达到11.4%/d,半衰期仅为6.1d,其次是血液和肝,肌肉的转化率最低,仅有3.8%/d,半衰期最长,为18.4d。代谢衰减指数c和-1不存在显著差异,表明锦鲤各组织的N同位素转化主要由组织生长引起。结论显示,同位素富集-稀释法可以有效评价鱼类食性转变对不同组织同位素转化的差异,鳍肉和血液同位素分析可以作为锦鲤食性转变快速追踪的手段。 相似文献

根据2009年8月辽河流域33个站点采集的鱼类数据(参照点8个,观测点25个),通过参数指标值分布范围、相关关系和判别能力分析,从23个侯选指标中筛选出了辽河流域的鱼类完整性指数(F-IBI)构成指标体系。该体系包括鱼类总种类数、Shannon-Wiener多样性指数、中上层鱼类百分比、底层鱼类百分比、鱼类个体总数、杂食性鱼类百分比、耐受性鱼类百分比、敏感性鱼类百分比和产粘性卵鱼类百分比共9个生物参数。分别采用1、3、5赋值法和比值法计算各站点的IBI分值,并根据参照点IBI分值的25%分位数值确定健康等级标准,对小于25%分位数值的分布范围进行3等分,提出了辽河流域河流鱼类完整性评价标准,分为健康、一般、差、较差4个等级。两种方法评价结果虽不完全相同,但趋势基本一致。Pearson相关分析表明IBI值与生境状况、水质状况、栖息地环境质量显著相关,其中与海拔、栖息地评分呈显著正相关,与CODCr、氯化物、总溶解颗粒物、含沙量、硬度、电导率呈显著负相关。 相似文献

Abstract Towards the end of the Wet season in the tropical coastlands of northern Australia, there are dramatic upstream movements of many fish species in some seasonally flowing streams. These movements are considered to be a part of refuge-seeking migrations. Aspects of the dynamics of the movements in Magela Creek (in the ‘Top End’ of the Northern Territory) downstream from the Ranger Uranium Mine have been examined with a range of techniques (mainly direct observation) to facilitate the development of a possible procedure for monitoring impacts of the mine on the fish community of the creek system. Data on diel patterns of movements validated that monitoring, for 1 h at midday at a single point adjacent to the mine, reflects day-to-day changes in total diel movements. To help identify the location of any impacts arising in the future, information on upstream progress rates, longitudinal changes in movements, and movements between the creek and lowland billabongs, were used to (i) demonstrate the creek-long continuity of movements and (ii) indicate the possible sources and destinations of fish approaching the mine. Marked differences in sources were apparent for two groups of species: terapontids originating from the lowland creek channels, and chequered rainbowfish and ambassids originating from the floodplain and lowland billabongs. Identification of the relative contributions from these habitats will require additional monitoring effort. 相似文献

Moss bio-monitoring is a convenient tool for establishing specific or large-scale exposure to atmospheric trace metals and nitrogen pollution. However, the uncertainty associated with sampling, sample preparation and chemical analysis of bio-monitors has been poorly documented, with the exception of one study dealing with lichens; thus, the uncertainty associated with moss bio-monitoring has never been assessed. Here, we propose following the Eurachem guidelines to determine the uncertainties associated with the concentrations of elements measured in mosses during the sampling survey across France in 2011. In addition, we assess the analytical method used in four surveys from 1996 to 2011. Uncertainties were expressed as linear functions of the element concentrations, with minimum and maximum slopes of 14 and 61%, corresponding to nitrogen and chromium, and a median of 32%. Although the data reveal that some steps of the protocol should be performed carefully, they also indicate that the protocol was executed properly and is reproducible. The chemical analyses contribute to a small proportion of the uncertainty associated with the protocol, except for the analysis of chromium. The sampling period, and intra-site variability largely contribute to this uncertainty. The moss species did not introduce additional uncertainty. This integrative assessment of measurement uncertainty will help improve the protocol for future surveys. Such studies could be useful for developing a standard operating procedure and could be used to improve comparisons between countries and to identify temporal trends across Europe. 相似文献

Due to their important role in the ecosystem and high economic value, there is a need to assess the effect of anthropogenic impacts on marine fish assemblages. However, this can only be achieved if variations due to natural causes are known. Moreover, while most assessment tools rely on functional traits, bottom-up habitat classification frameworks tend to use species composition. The present study proposes an innovative framework to define fish assemblage types through metric pairwise constrained k-means (MPCK-means) clustering of sites based on functional guild categories and univariate metrics, an approach that takes into account within-site variability due to the sampling method and natural causes. This was followed by a label-based ensemble clustering approach, which finds patterns that minimise information loss when integrating clustering results from individual metrics. In order to test the method, fish assemblages on 14 nearshore rocky reefs along the Portuguese coast were sampled. The final typology configuration achieved through ensemble clustering consisted of three assemblage types and maintained an average normalised mutual information of 0.605 with the individual clustering results. Nested PERMANOVA found differences among types and the most variable metrics in the face of natural variation were identified. Ultimately, a k-nearest neighbours classifier is proposed to label new sites, based only on environmental variables that are unlikely to be directly affected by the presence of anthropogenic impacts. Optimal performance for the classification model was achieved with inverse distance-weighted voting of the 4 nearest neighbours with an average classification accuracy of 96.08%. 相似文献

1. Natural variation in environmental parameters, as well as practical constraints in study design and sampling methodology, often pose difficulties in treating impact assessments in river catchments as controlled field experiments. It is frequently impossible to develop robust relationships between reference and test stations prior to the onset of an impact and the range of statistical tools which can be adopted in data analysis to detect a change or disturbance is limited. 2. In an attempt to overcome these problems we introduce a novel disturbance index to assess the impact of landuse activities on river systems. The index identifies differences in hydrochemical parameters and macroinvertebrate community metrics between reference and test stations (at a set level of significance). This approach allows for objective assessment of the occurrence and direction of change as well as the duration of an impact. The disturbance index can be applied at different scales – for a single stream, a catchment or a region. 3. In this paper we describe the derivation of the index and illustrate its utility through worked examples. We use the index to assess impact of clearfelling on hydrochemical parameters such as hydrogen ion concentration, total hardness, suspended solids, conductivity and nitrate concentration as well as on macroinvertebrate parameters including abundance, richness, reciprocal of Simpson's diversity index, evenness, Ephemeroptera/Plecoptera/Trichoptera (EPT) richness and percentage of EPT taxa. 4. The sensitivity of the disturbance index changes with scale of application however, and the clearfelling (CF) index has proven sensitive to the detection of even quite small changes, although in these cases ecological significance should be considered. We show that the CF index, particularly when derived from a regional scale, is a conservative index but is very robust to variation in the number of samples used in its derivation. The application of the index corresponded very well with the application of more standard statistical approaches. We believe that the index can thus be applied to other impact studies with similar project design. 相似文献

以褐菖鲉为实验鱼类,以鱼肝微粒体CYP1A 生物标志物(EROD活性和CYP1A蛋白表达量)为指标,在厦门海域开展了两次野外监测实验,研究EROD活性和CYP1A蛋白表达量的变化,以及它们与海水和沉积物中石油类和重金属含量之间的相关性。结果表明,在现场属于一类海水的石油类浓度(0.0121-0.0242 mg/L)条件下,石油类就能够显著诱导褐菖鲉肝EROD活性和CYP1A蛋白表达量,鱼肝EROD活性和CYP1A蛋白表达量与海水中石油类含量均呈现极显著正相关,CYP1A蛋白表达量比EROD活性较为敏感和稳定。此外,在监测实验中,尚未发现这两种生物标志物受所监测海区的海水和沉积物重金属含量的影响。因此,利用褐菖鲉肝微粒体EROD活性和CYP1A蛋白表达量作为生物标志物监测海洋石油类及其PAHs污染是可行的,在海洋环境石油类污染监测及其生化效应评价中具有重要的应用价值。而且,把这两种生物标志物结合起来加以研究并推广应用将更有意义。 相似文献

An important effort has been made to develop diversity indices suitable to monitor the loss of biodiversity due to anthropogenic impacts in an accurate and comprehensible way. Here, N90, a diversity index based on the species’ contribution to the similarity between samples in a group, is presented. N90 uses the results of the classic Similarity Percentage analysis and a jack-knife routine to calculate the average and a dispersion value of the number of species contributing up to the ninety percent of the similarity in a group of samples. N90 is applied to two groups of samples subjected to contrasting levels of bottom trawl fishing pressure using time series of experimental bottom trawl surveys of the Balearic Islands. The results are compared to those obtained using more ‘traditional’ diversity indices such as species richness, Shannon–Wienner, Simpson, Pielou, and Margalef diversity indices. The N90 diversity index displayed a clear response to fishing pressure with significantly lower values in impacted communities, while the ‘traditional’ diversity indices showed almost null sensitivity to fishing pressure. In addition, N90 also detects indirect fishing impacts by fluctuating in response to environmental variation in impacted areas, making this index sensitive to the synergies between climate and fishing impact at community level. The application of the N90 diversity index to the case study shows that it may be an alternative to ‘traditional’ diversity indices when trying to monitor fishing impacts and the effects of environmental changes. Its units, number of species, and the corresponding summary list of species facilitate the interpretability of the results, improving the communication to managers and stakeholders. 相似文献
