Total aluminum, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, and nickel were determined in black tea, green tea, Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Ilex paraguariensis (mate) by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry after nitric/perchloric acid digestion. In each case, one ground sample of commercially available leafy material was prepared and three 0.5-g subsamples were run in parallel. The infusions were also analyzed and the percentage of each element leached into the liquor was evaluated. The obtained results indicated that hibiscus and mate contained lower levels of aluminum (272±19 μg/g and 369±22 μg/g, respectively) as referred to black tea (759±31 μg/g) or green tea (919±29 μg/g) and suggested that mate drinking could be a good dietary source of essential micronutrient manganese (total content 2223±110 μg/g, 48.1% leached to the infusion). It was also found that the infusion of hibiscus could supply greater amounts of iron (111±5 μg/g total, 40.5% leached) and copper (5.9±0.3 μg/g total, 93.4% leached) as compared to other infusions. Moreover, it was found that the percentage of element leached to the infusion was strongly related to the tannins content in the beverage (correlation coefficients >0.82 with the exception for nickel); for lower tannins level, better leaching was observed.  相似文献

Growth (length) was compared in A. franciscana populations from Utah, United States of America, and Yape, Chile, and A. persimilis (population from Salinas de Hidalgo, Argentina), cultured under controlled conditions (24 degrees C, seawater 35 g/l, fed with Chaetoceros calcitrans). There were significant differences among all stages of A. franciscana (Utah) and A. persimilis, whereas we found significant differences only in two stages of A. persimilis and A. franciscana (Yape); both A. franciscana had similar total lengths in all stages analyzed. A cost-effective way to reduce lead released into the environment is through immobilization with readily available soil amendments. Leaching of Pb from four shooting range soils treated with two phosphate sources was evaluated in soil columns. Phosphate was applied at a P/Pb molar ratio of 4:1 with two-thirds of the P supplied from phosphate rock (PR) and one-third from phosphoric acid (PA). The soils were incubated for 18 hr and leached with toxicity characterization leaching procedure (TCLP) and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) fluids, respectively. PR/PA treatment reduced Pb in TCLP leachate to below regulatory limit of 5 mg/L after 18 hr of incubation. Reduction of Pb leached was more dependent on clay content than total Fe. PR/PA treatment had no effect on pH of TCLP leached soils, while it led to a drastic lowering of pH that mobilized Pb in SPLP leached soils. However, leaching of Pb reduced with time in SPLP leached soils because pH increased gradually. PR/PA treatment was more effective in SPLP leached soils with low total soil Pb because they received lower amounts of PA. PR/PA treatment may be more efficient when applied as split applications in soils with a low to medium Pb loading and a high buffering capacity.  相似文献

Population decline in the federally endangered June sucker (Chasmistes liorus), a lakesucker unique to Utah Lake, Utah, has been attributed in part to hybridization with the more widespread Utah sucker (Catostomus ardens). As a group, suckers in Utah Lake exhibit considerable external morphological variation. Meristic and morphological ambiguities, presumably the result of hybridization, create a continuum of intermediate forms between Chasmistes and Catostomus extremes and prevent definitive identification to species. Here we describe and evaluate the morphological and genetic variation in suckers in Utah Lake by comparing a morphological analysis with amplified fragment length polymorphism and microsatellite analyses. Suckers were morphologically differentiated using mouth characters associated with different feeding strategies: planktivory (June sucker) and benthivory (Utah sucker). Although we found no genetic evidence for a deep divergence between June and Utah morphs, significant, but slight population structuring accompanied the substantial morphological variation. Bayesian model‐based genetic clustering analyses detected two sucker populations in Utah Lake; however, these clusters were not strongly concordant with morphological groupings or between marker systems. The suckers in Utah Lake present an interesting dilemma regarding conservation: should one conserve (breed and stock) a subset of the morphotypic variation in the Utah Lake sucker complex, focusing on the endangered June sucker morphotype, or should one conserve both June sucker and Utah sucker morphotypes in this complex, possibly maximizing evolutionary potential? We explore this question in the context of current genetic and morphological variation in the Utah Lake sucker complex as well as historical information on this complex and other lakesuckers.  相似文献

Swabs of conjunctiva were collected from 44 live and 226 hunter-harvested mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Wyoming and Utah (USA). We identified 29 gram negative and 22 gram positive bacterial taxonomic categories, but many isolates from hunter-harvested animals were environmental contaminants. Staphylococcus spp. and Micrococcus spp. were the most common gram positive bacteria isolated, and Enterobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. were common gram negative bacteria isolated. Thelazia californiensis were found in 15% of hunter-harvested deer in Utah in 1994 and in 8% in 1995. Nematodes were found in 40% of live deer in 1995 and 66% in 1996. Three live animals showed clinical signs of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in 1996, but pathogenic bacteria were not isolated from these individuals. Hemolytic, non-piliated Moraxella ovis was isolated from two clinically normal live deer in 1996 and isolates were similar to those cultured from IKC cases from Wyoming and Utah.  相似文献

The Utah sucker (Catostomus ardens) is endemic to the Bonneville Basin and the upper Snake River drainage in western North America, and is thought to hybridize with the federally endangered June sucker (Chasmistes liorus mictus) in Utah Lake (Bonneville Basin). Here we describe the discovery of a major subdivision in Utah suckers (4.5% mitochondrial sequence divergence) between the ancient Snake River drainage and the Bonneville Basin. This boundary has not previously been recognized in Utah suckers based on morphologic variation, but has been recently described in two endemic cyprinids in the region. Populations in valleys east of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah clustered with the Snake River populations, suggesting that these valleys may have had an ancient hydrologic connection to the Snake River. We also found evidence of population isolation within the Bonneville Basin, corresponding to two Pleistocene sub-basins of the ancient Lake Bonneville. In contrast, we found no molecular evidence for deep divergence between Utah suckers and June suckers in Utah Lake or for a history of hybridization between divergent lineages in that population, although we recognize that demographic events may have obscured this signal. These findings suggest that the morphological differences between Utah and June suckers in Utah Lake may be the result of strong, and relatively recent, ecological selection. In summary, morphological and molecular characters seem to vary along different axes in different portions of the range of this taxon, providing an interesting system for studying the contributions of neutral and adaptive variation to species diversity.  相似文献

The polypeptides of the highly virulent mink-passaged Utah I and the nonvirulent cell culture-adapted ADV-G strain of Aleutian disease virus (ADV) were compared. When CRFK cells infected with either Utah I or ADV-G were analyzed by immunoprecipitation, both viruses induced proteins with molecular weights characteristic of the ADV-G 85,000 ( 85k )- and 75k-dalton structural proteins (p85 and p75) as well as the 71k -dalton nonvirion protein p71 . However, when Utah I, Pullman ADV, and DK ADV (a Danish isolate of ADV) were purified from infected mink, only polypeptides with molecular weights between 27k and 30k could be identified. In addition, trypsin treatment of ADV-G degraded p85 and p75 to smaller antigenic proteins with molecular weights of 24k and 27k, similar to those found for the virulent in vivo viruses. The effect of proteolytic treatment of ADV was then studied in detail. Purification of Utah I ADV from mink organs in the presence of protease inhibitor did not prevent the appearance of the low-molecular-weight proteins and ADV-G proteins were not degraded upon purification from a homogenate of normal mink organs, suggesting that artifactual proteolysis was not occurring. When a serum pool from terminally diseased mink was analyzed by radioimmunoassay for antibody reactivity against trypsinized and nontrypsinized ADV-G, five times higher reactivity was found for the trypsinized ADV-G than for the nontrypsinized ADV-G, an effect which could not be elicited by chymotrypsin or V8 protease treatment, implying that in vivo-produced ADV was being modulated in vivo by trypsin or a trypsin-like enzyme. Trypsinization was shown not to cause a change in ADV virion density, but to decrease the in vitro infectivity of ADV-G for CRFK cells. These studies suggested that during infection of mink ADV proteins are degraded to highly antigenic smaller polypeptides.  相似文献

An extensive multi-laboratory study was conducted to compare three different field-flow fractionation (FFF) systems for use in the analysis of human erythrocytes. The object of this study was to determine the relationship between the FFF elution properties for each system and the traditional hematological blood cell parameters. One centrifugal system (Utah) and two gravitational systems (Paris and Abbott) were compared. In order to analyze erythrocyte populations with a broad range of hematological indices, blood samples were collected from individuals heterozygous for sickle cell anemia (A/S) and also from normal controls (A/A), and these were analyzed at each site. Identical samples were analyzed by the Abbott and Utah sites. With all three systems, blood samples from each category produced narrow, overlapping distributions of FFF retention ratios, with the Abbott and Utah systems showing slight elevations in the mean retention ratios for the sickle cell samples. Blood cell elution peak characteristics were compared with standard hematological parameters for each of the FFF systems, and negative correlations were consistently found between mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and retention ratios. Positive correlations were found between red cell distribution width (RDW) and retention ratios. Elevated FFF retention ratios were frequently found with blood samples having abnormal hematological profiles. These results demonstrate that the three differently configured systems all produce similar analysis profiles for erythrocytes from the classes studied here. The relationships between FFF parameters and hematological indices were consistent for all systems.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the leaching behavior of iron from simulated landfills with different operation modes, with an emphasis on the variation of iron in different oxidation state, ferrous Fe(II) and ferric Fe(III) percentage and the distribution of iron content in different landfill leachate fractions. The leaching behavior and accumulated amounts of iron leached out by leachate from conventional landfill (CL) and leachate recirculated landfill (RL) exhibited decidedly different trends except for the initial 28 days. In addition, the percentage of iron leached from CL and RL accounted 1.00% and 0.14% for the total amount in landfills, respectively. No correlations between iron and selected characteristics in leachate were found were observed in the two simulated landfills. Significant positive correlations between particulate bound iron and Fe(III) were found in the leachates from RL (R2 = 0.748) and CL (R2 = 0.833).  相似文献

Reducing sugars, phosphates, potassium ions, total electricallyconducting material, proteins, and phenolics leached from twovarieties of peanut (Arachis hypogea L. ) seeds during 24 himbibition in distilled water. The same substances leached fromthe seeds when testas were removed before imbibition. The quantitiesof substances leached from seeds without testas after 24 h,except protein and phenolics, were much greater than from seedswith intact testas. Time courses of leaching of sugars, phosphates,potassium ions, and of total electrically conducting materialshowed fastest leaching rates in the first hour of imbibition.In the first 4 h of imbibition more sugars leached from intactseeds than from seeds without testas. Peroxidase was presentin leachates from intact seeds but was undetectable in leachatesfrom seeds without testas. Hydrogen peroxide-reducing activitywas detected in 24 h leachates from intact seeds and from seedswithout testas. The activity was partly inhibited by 1 mM ascorbate.It was concluded that catalase was present in the leachates. The peanut testas were thin. Their presence around the embryodid not reduce the rate of imbibition as compared with thatof seeds without testas. Thus the greater leaching of some substancesin the absence of the testa could not be ascribed to the absenceof a physical barrier to water uptake.  相似文献

In May 1978, a general freeze of the male flowers of Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii Nutt.) was observed in northern Utah. In August, transect reconnaissance was conducted throughout Utah to assess acorn production and the incidence of freeze damage in Gambel oak. It was found that below ca. 1950 m elevation acorn production was relatively low while the incidence of freeze damage was high. Above ca. 1950 m elevation, where the oaks were still dormant at the time of the freeze, acorn production was relatively high while freeze damage was relatively low. Occasional acorn production observed at low elevations appeared to be associated with subterranean pooling of water and/or cold air drainage. Some biogeographic implications of freeze stress are discussed.  相似文献

In-situ remediation is a practical approach to remediate soils contaminated with heavy metals. The MnFe2O4 microparticles (MM) were prepared for the in-situ remediation of contaminated soils from a lead–zinc polymetallic mine in Inner Mongolia province, China. The effects of MM dosage, pH on remediation efficiency, were determined with static vibration leaching experiment, and the release risk of heavy metals of treated soil was studied by column leaching experiment. The results showed that the leached Cu, Pb, Zn, and As concentration decreased drastically with increasing MM dosage, when the dosage was lower than 10 g/kg. Moreover, the decrease of pH caused increase of leached concentration of Cu, Pb, Zn, but slight decrease of leached As concentration. For the amended soil, concentrations of leached heavy metals were lower than Grade III limit of Chinese Environmental Quality Standards for Ground and Surface water (GB3838-2002) under simulated acid rain leaching condition. In comparison with non-amended soils, the total amount of Cu, Pb, Zn, and As release from amended soils was reduced by 93.6%, 69.2%, 57.0%, and 99.7%, respectively. The MM is a kind of promising amendment for heavy metals contaminated soil.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the glossiphoniid leech Helobdella stagnalis in Utah Lake, Utah was studied for an 18-month period from June 1970 to December 1971. In this lake it was found that the overwintering adult leeches produce two broods of young in May and June. Evidence is presented to support the idea that the same individual can produce two broods. Two complete cycles of gametogenesis also take place. Continuous water temperatures were recorded at the study site to correlate with reproductive activity. Gametogenesis appears to be temperature dependent with the first generation of sperm taking 4 months to be produced in the fall and winter months while the second generation of sperm is produced in 6 weeks during the spring. The effect of foliar application of captan, dithane, carbaryl and atrataf on the quantity of total carbohydrates, total amino acids and total nitrogen leached from corn leaves and on the phylloplane counts of fungi, bacteria and actinomycetes was studied. Leaf extracts were analyzed for amino acids, carbohydrates and nitrogen and were correlated with microbial counts. Generally the microbial counts were less than the control in treated samples and a significant change in Gram-negative bacteria in all treatments was recorded. All treated leaf extracts showed less total amino acids and total nitrogen though they were rich in carbohydrates as compared with the control.  相似文献

采用等温吸附法,并以1mol/L KNO3进行解吸试验,研究CaCO3对3种土壤镉吸附和解吸的影响。结果表明,3种土壤的原状土样对镉吸附总趋势为:栗钙土>棕壤>淋溶褐土,均符合Langmuir方程、Frenudlich方程和Temink方程,其中以Freumdlich方程最佳。镉的专性吸附量表现为栗钙土>淋溶褐土>棕壤。添加CaCO3使3种土壤中镉的吸附量增加,增加幅度棕壤为4%-11%,淋溶褐土2%-11%,栗钙土2%-8%。外界加入的镉浓度越高,增加幅度越大。Freundlich方程(lgX=lgK lgC/n)拟合的参数结果表明:加入CaCO3后,K和n值均下降;Langmuir方程中镉最大吸附值增加,吸附平均常数减小。可以推测,CaCO3的存在之所以能够使土壤体系吸附镉能力增加,除CaCO3本身的吸附作用增加,吸附平衡常数减小。可以推测,CaCO3的存在之所以能够使土壤体系吸附镉能力增加,除CaCO3本身的吸附作用外,还可能影响反应体系的平衡系数。加入CaCO3,土壤对镉的专性吸附明显增加,尤其以棕壤专性吸附的镉最多,淋溶褐土其次,而栗钙土增加较少,栗钙土去除CaCO3后,镉的吸附减少了2.0%-26.0%,土壤专性吸附的镉减少4.0%-38.2%。3种土壤镉的解吸能力表现为:棕壤>淋溶褐土>栗钙土。添加CaCO3,土壤镉的解吸量下降。去除CaCO3后,栗钙土匐解吸量明显增加。  相似文献

Significant differences (P = 0.05) in nematode reproduction were observed among populations of Heterodera schachtii and weed collections of black nightshade, common lambsquarters, common purslane, redroot-pigweed, shepherdspurse, and wild mustard from Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, and Utah. Colorado weeds supported the greatest nematode development (P = 0.05). Weeds collected from Idaho and Utah were similar with respect to their response to H. schachtii with the exception of shepherdspurse. At increasing soil temperatures, a Utah redroot-pigweed collection showed a higher percent susceptibility to a Utah nematode population than to nematode populations from the other states (P = 0.05). There was a higher percentage of susceptible plants when the weed host population was collected from the same geographical area as the nematode inoculun.  相似文献

Summary Observations from a soil management trial conducted on a previously grassed down orchard showed that after 3 years the pH of the surface soil (0–10 cm) whether measured in distilled water or 1N KCl was significantly lowered in herbicided and cultivated treatments in comparison with plots under continued grass sod. The drop in pH was accompanied by a decrease in base saturation and a consequent increase in exchange acidity. This was attributed to the leaching of Ca and also Mg from the surface soil of the non-grassed plots.In a subsequent laboratory leaching study, cubic soil blocks (16 cm3) were leached with distilled water at two weekly intervals for 24 weeks. It was found that over the experimental period, the cumulative quantity of cations leached (in milli-equivalents) per soil block from the herbicided and cultivated treatments was approximately 3.5 times that leached from the grassed treatment.  相似文献

Five populations of Heterodera schachtii Schm. from Oregon, Idaho, and Utah did not differ significantly in seedling penetration and rate of emergence and virulence. Another Utah H. schachtii population (Utah 2), however, differed from these five populations in all of the above-mentioned characteristics. More H. schachtii larvae of the Utah 2 population than the other populations penetrated sugarbeet seedlings at 10, 15, 20, and 25 C. Root and top weights of sugarbeet plants were signiticantly less when roots were parasitized by the Utah 2 population than when they were parasitized by larvae of the other nematode populations under similar experimental conditions. Also, the period of larval emergence was shorter in the Utah 2 population than in any of the other H. schachtii populations.  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was conducted to determine the release of boron from soil-sewage sludge mixtures by leaching using a clinoptilolite type natural zeolite, before land application of the sewage sludge. Soil columns were filled up with the clinoptilolite soil after mixing with sewage sludge at a rate of 30 tons ha(-1) and with two different particle sizes (0.1-0.25 and 1.0-2.0 mm) of clinoptilolite each at the concentrations of 1% and 2%. The particle size and the application rate of clinoptilolite affected both boron leaching from soil compared to the control treatment (soil and sewage sludge mixture). The total soluble boron leached from a soil column varied from 66-92% depending on the applications of clinoptilolite and reached 96% for the control treatment, following application of 80 cm depth of water in all treatments. In the cases of the 1% application rate of 0.1-0.25 and 1-2 mm sized clinoptilolite 78% and 92% of the total boron leached, respectively. While at 2% application rate of 0.1-0.25 and 1-2 mm zeolite, 66% and 87% of total soluble boron leached, respectively. Boron concentrations in the soil layers increased as application rate increased and particle size of clinoptilolite decreased because of its high adsorption capacity. Adsorption isotherms indicated that clinoptilolite had a high adsorption capacity for boron compared to the sewage sludge and soil.  相似文献

Many semiarid rangelands have recently experienced changes in dominant plant life form. Both woody plant expansion into grasslands and the invasion of annual grasses into shrublands have potential influence on regional carbon cycling. Soil carbon content, chemistry, and distribution may change following shifts in dominant plant life form because plant life forms differ in litter chemistry and patterns of detrital input. This study assesses the amount, quality, and distribution of soil C below woody vegetation and grasses at three rangelands in Texas, New Mexico, and Utah. At each of these sites there has been a well-documented shift in dominant plant life form. In Texas and New Mexico, woody plants have increased in grasslands, while grasses have invaded into former shrublands in Utah. We measured total soil carbon, particulate organic matter (POM) C, and the carbon isotopic composition of soil carbon beneath woody plants and grasses at each of these three sites. At the La Copita Research Area in south-central Texas there was significantly more soil C found beneath Prosopis glandulosa, the dominant woody plant, than was found beneath grasses. Mean soil C content to 1 m was 7.2 kg C m–2 beneath P. glandulosa and 6.0 kg C m–2 beneath grasses. There was also significantly more POM C beneath P. glandulosa than beneath grasses. Stable carbon isotopic composition indicated that the expansion of P. glandulosa in savannas in Texas first influences carbon cycling in surface soils, then deep soil C, and finally throughout the soil profile. At the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico, we found that there was significantly more soil C in the upper 10 cm of the soil profile beneath Larrea tridentata than was found beneath Bouteloua spp. Stable carbon isotopic composition indicated that the expansion of L. tridentata influenced C cycling throughout the soil profile. At Curlew Valley in northern Utah, we found no significant differences in total profile soil C beneath different plant life forms. However, there was significantly more soil C found at the soil surface beneath woody plants than was observed beneath annual grasses. There was significantly less POM C beneath annual grasses than was found beneath woody plants or perennial grasses. Based on stable carbon isotopic analyses, we concluded that the invasion of grasses into shrublands influenced only the upper 30 cm of the soil profile. We determined that following changes in plant life form dominance, the most consistent change in soil C was an alteration in content and distribution of POM C, a slowly cycling pool of soil C. While we failed to find a consistent change in total profile soil C with plant life form across our sites, the change in soil C chemistry may have important implications for long-term soil C storage in semiarid systems where there have been shifts in plant life form.
