Food habits, growth rate, reproductive performance, carcass characteristics and nutritive value of the giant snail were investigated in the field and with captive snails. Food consumed included fresh plant material, livestock faeces and dead animals. Clutch sizes varied from six to twelve and incubation periods from 30 to 45 days. Weight gains of young snails of average weight 20 g fed on diets of single plant species ranged from 18% on Talinum triangulare leaves to 200% on pawpaw fruit. Best growth was shown on leaves of cassava and cocoyam, grain chaff of maize and fruit of pawpaw. Dressing-out percentage of snails of 200 g weight was 37.8%. Nutrient composition of the edible portion compared closely with that of domestic livestock. Nitrogen-free extractive content was high at 5% and fat low at 1.3%. Mineral analysis revealed a high iron content of 12.2 mg/100 g in the edible carcass. The experiments showed that the snail could thrive in captivity on a variety of locally produced feeds, many of them rejected as waste products. It shows great promise as a domestic animal capable of being reared with negligible capital outlay.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of soy isoflavone daidzein on carcass characteristics, fat deposition, meat quality, and blood metabolites in finishing steers. Fourteen crossbred steers were used in a 120-d finishing study. These steers were stratified by weight into groups and randomly allotted by group to one of two dietary treatments: (1) control and (2) daidzein (500 mg/kg concentrate). The steers were fed a 90% concentrate diet. Supplemental daidzein did not affect slaughter weight, hot carcass weight, and dressing percentage, but tended to reduce fat proportion (not including intramuscular fat) in carcass and backfat thickness of steers. The carcass bone proportion was greater in steers fed daidzein diets than those fed control diets. Daidzein supplementation reduced pH at 24 h after slaughtered and moisture content and increased isocitrate dehydrogenase activity, fat content (16.28% and 7.94%), marbling score (5.29 and 3.36), redness (a*), and chroma (C*) values in longissimus muscle relative to control treatment. The concentrations of blood metabolites including glucose, blood urea nitrogen, triglyceride, total cholesterol, non-esterified fatty acid, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were all lower in steers fed daidzein diets than those fed control diets. Current results suggest that supplemental daidzein can affect lipid metabolism, increase intramuscular fat content and marbling score, and improve meat quality in finishing steers. Daidzein should be a promising feed additive for production of high-quality beef meat.  相似文献

Three tropical tubers, raw or processed by steam-pelleting, were studied in the rumen in vitro or in the chicken in vivo in order to determine the effects of the nature and of the treatment of the tubers on urea utilization by rumen microflora, starch breakdown in the crop and the performance of growing chickens.Starch of cassava (Manihot utilissima) and of sweet potato (Ipomea batata) is characterised by an X-ray diffraction pattern of the A-type and is therefore similar to starch of cereals. In vitro these starches were well broken down in the presence of α-amylase from B. subtilis, and were good sources of energy for rumen microbial growth; in vivo they were completely digested by growing chickens. Compared to cassava, the fermentation of sweet potato in rumen and crop led to increased acidity. The cassava diet gave a better nitrogen retention and growth performance associated with higher food intake. In contrast, starch of yam (Dioscorea cayenensis) which is characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern of the B-type, and by large granules like potato starch, was less susceptible to α-amylase and promoted lower microbial proteosynthesis in vitro. Starch from a yam diet was more slowly degraded in the crop and its overall digestibility was only 83%. Yam reduced feed intake and gave lower nitrogen retention and lower food conversion ratio and consequently poor growth. The steam-pelleting treatment increased starch availability and permitted better urea utilization by rumen microflora. It improved N retention and feed efficiency of chicken diets, although not significantly. The greatest effect of the treatment was observed with yam.In conclusion, the digestibility of a given starch seems to be related to its structure, characterized by the type of X-ray diffraction pattern, which could be a help in tuber selection for animal nutrition. Simple processing such as steam-pelleting may improve the nutritive value of a tuber, especially when its starch has a B-type crystallinity.  相似文献

The effect of feeding graded levels of tigernut meal (TGN) as a replacement for maize in the diets of cockerel starters on carcass characteristics and economics of feed conversion was assessed for 70 days. Tigernut replaced maize at 0%, 33.33%, 66.67% and 100% levels. A total of 120 day-old chicks were randomly allotted to four experimental diets such that each dietary treatment had three replicates of ten birds. Inclusion of TGN at 33.33% in cockerel diets supported better carcass yield in terms of high plucked, eviscerated, drumstick, thigh, neck, wing, heads, shanks, livers, hearts and lung weights without significant differences (P>0.05) in values obtained. However, there were significant difference (P<0.05) in back, breast, abdominal fat, gizzard, spleen, kidney and intestinal weights and lengths. Inclusion of TGN 100% level significantly depressed parameters assessed. The optimum replacement level of maize with TGN was 33.33% as this gave no significant reduction in carcass yield of the birds but a significant reduction in the cost of feed consumed. It required a feed cost of 42.90 ( 0.31 US dollars) to produce one kilogram weight gain on diet 2 (33.33%). Inclusion of TNG in the diets resulted in feed cost savings of 4.88% (D2), 8.17 (D3) and 8.90% (D4) respectively.  相似文献

An artisanal static process for protein enrichment of cassava by solid-state fermentation, developed in laboratory and tested on pilot units in Burundi (Central Africa), provides enriched cassava containing 10.7% of dry matter protein versus 1% before fermentation. Cassava chips, processed into granules of 2-4-mm diameter, are moistened (40% water content) and steamed. After cooling to 40 degrees C, cassava is mixed with a nutritive solution containing the inoculum (Rhizopus oryzae, strain MUCL 28627) and providing the following per 100 g dry matter: 3.4 g urea, 1.5 g KH(2)PO(4), 0.8 g MgSO(4).7H(2)O, and 22.7 g citric acid. For the fermentation, cassava, with ca. 60% moisture content, is spread in a thin layer (2-3 cm thick) on perforated trays and slid into an aerated humidified enclosure. The incubation lasts +/- 65 h. The production of protein enriched cassava is 3.26 kg dry matter/m(2) tray. The effects of the variation of the nutritive solution composition and the inoculum conservation period on the protein production are equally discussed.  相似文献

Transgenic cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz, cv MCol22) plants with a 92% reduction in cyanogenic glucoside content in tubers and acyanogenic (<1% of wild type) leaves were obtained by RNA interference to block expression of CYP79D1 and CYP79D2, the two paralogous genes encoding the first committed enzymes in linamarin and lotaustralin synthesis. About 180 independent lines with acyanogenic (<1% of wild type) leaves were obtained. Only a few of these were depleted with respect to cyanogenic glucoside content in tubers. In agreement with this observation, girdling experiments demonstrated that cyanogenic glucosides are synthesized in the shoot apex and transported to the root, resulting in a negative concentration gradient basipetal in the plant with the concentration of cyanogenic glucosides being highest in the shoot apex and the petiole of the first unfolded leaf. Supply of nitrogen increased the cyanogenic glucoside concentration in the shoot apex. In situ polymerase chain reaction studies demonstrated that CYP79D1 and CYP79D2 were preferentially expressed in leaf mesophyll cells positioned adjacent to the epidermis. In young petioles, preferential expression was observed in the epidermis, in the two first cortex cell layers, and in the endodermis together with pericycle cells and specific parenchymatic cells around the laticifers. These data demonstrate that it is possible to drastically reduce the linamarin and lotaustralin content in cassava tubers by blockage of cyanogenic glucoside synthesis in leaves and petioles. The reduced flux to the roots of reduced nitrogen in the form of cyanogenic glucosides did not prevent tuber formation.  相似文献

Cassava leaves as human food   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The use of cassava leaves as human food is reviewed and their value as a source of protein and vitamins for supplementing predominantly starchy diets reemphasized. The problem of the toxicity of the leaves is considered, and the effects on both nutritive value and toxicity of the traditional methods of preparing the leaves, such as drying, pounding, and long periods of boiling, are described and discussed. Loss of nutrients, particularly vitamins, occurs during processing but remaining levels can still make an important contribution to the diet. HCN levels are reduced considerably by the processing methods, although the toxic effects of residual levels need further investigation.  相似文献

A study was conducted to investigate the nutritive value of melon husk (MH). Results showed that MH was low in crude protein but very high in crude fibre, ash and ether extract. The elemental analysis showed that MH was also high in calcium and phosphorus content. However, when MH was incorporated into starter diets of chicks, body weight gain decreased with increase in the level of MH in the diets. Birds fed on a 10% MH diet were superior to others in body weight gain (10.45 g/bird/day). Results of feed intake and efficiency of feed utilization were also superior on 10% MH diet with values of 43.07 g/bird/day and 4.12 recorded, respectively. The dietary treatment had significant effect (p < 0.05) on the protein efficiency ratio, which decreased with increase in level of MH in the diets. However, there appeared to be no treatment effects on haematological parameters. Up to 10% MH can replace maize in the starter diet of cockerels without adverse effect on performance.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the nutritive value of lentil straw (LS) and vetch straws (VS) with alfalfa hay (AH) and wheat straw (WS). Forty Awassi ewes (body weight (BW)=56.2 kg) were assigned randomly to four dietary treatments (10 ewes per treatment) for 6 weeks using a complete randomize design. In each dietary treatment, ewes were fed 550 g per day of concentrate mix formulated to supply 40% of the metabolizable energy requirement. After the consumption of the concentrate mix, ewes had ad libtum access to AH, LS, VS, or WS. Forage intake, total dry matter intake (DMI), and organic matter intake (OMI) were higher for AH and LS and lowest for WS. Final weight of ewes fed AH and LS diets were higher (P<0.05) than VS and WS diets. However, ewes fed VS diet gained more weight (2.5 kg) than ewes on WS diet (0.2 kg). Dry matter digestibility was higher for the AH and LS diets (59.4%), and lowest for WS diet (49.6%). The VS diet had an intermediate value (54.4%). Ruminal passage rate was higher for AH and LS (3.4% per hour) compared with WS (1.9% per hour). Eating time for the AH diet was lowest compared with the rest of the forages. Eating time, expressed as minutes per kilogram NDF intake, was highest for WS and VS diets (680 min) compared with AH and LS diets (535 min). WS diet required more time for rumination (395 min per day) compared to AH, LS, and VS diets. However, ewes on VS diet spent more time ruminating per kilogram NDF consumed (954 min) compared with WS, LS, and AH diets (901, 617, and 597 min, respectively). These results were significant and demonstrate that the nutritive value of LS is greater than VS and close to the nutritive value of AH. VS nutritive value is slightly greater than WS.  相似文献

Finding insect meals as alternative sources of poultry feedstuffs is a recent research topic; therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of defatted black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L., HI) larvae meal in broiler chicken diets on the carcass characteristics and meat quality parameters, proximate composition, fatty acid profile and the heavy metal content of the breast meat. Four dietary treatments were designed: a control diet (HI0) and three experimental diets (HI5, HI10 and HI15), corresponding to 50, 100 and 150 g/kg HI inclusion levels, respectively. The inclusion of 50, 100 and 150 g HI meal per kg feed supply 16.56%, 33.01% and 49.63% of required crude protein. The broilers were slaughtered at day 35, the carcasses were weighed and the breast muscles were excised from 16 birds per each feeding group (two birds per replicate pens) and used for meat quality evaluation. Linear and quadratic responses were observed, for increasing HI meal levels, in the live and carcass weights (maximum for HI10). As far as the colour of the breast meat is concerned, redness (a*) showed a linear response, while yellowness (b*) linearly decreased with increasing HI meal levels (minimum for HI15). As the HI larvae meal increased in the diets, the moisture content linearly decreased and the protein content increased. The total saturated fatty acid and total monounsaturated fatty acid proportions rose to the detriment of the polyunsaturated fatty acid fraction. The HI larvae meal, used in the current study, represents a valuable protein source for broiler chickens when included by up to 100 g/kg in their diets, as an improved slaughtering performance was observed without any detrimental effects on meat quality parameters or heavy metal residues in the meat.  相似文献

The cull ewes represent an important part of sheep flock. However, this category of animal is often submitted to under nutrition leading to poor BW and skeletal carcasses. Their rehabilitation using a high energy diet can be an alternative to improve their body condition. The objective of this experiment was to study the BW gain and carcass characteristics of Barbarine cull ewes using rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) distillation residues (RR) and extruded linseed. For this, 28 ewes above 6 years old and 33±0.5 kg of BW were divided into four groups: CCC was fed 500 g of barley-straw with concentrate, RCC received 300 g of straw and 200 g of RR as basal diet with concentrate; whereas two other groups received the experimental concentrate, containing 10% of linseed, with 500 g of straw for CLC and 300 g of straw plus 200 g of RR for RLC group. At the end of experiment (90 days), all animals were slaughtered. For all ewes, the daily concentrate intake averaged 700 g; the average daily gain was 131 g and the slaughter BW 43.4 kg without significant difference between groups. Neither basal diet nor concentrate type did affect the carcass’ weight, yield and composition. In addition, the organ’s proportions were similar for all groups. The RR intake slightly improved muscle’s protein content (P=0.03) and tended to decrease initial pH (P=0.06) and to increase meat redness (P=0.06), whereas linseed concentrate had no effect on meat color and its chemical composition. The subcutaneous fat color and firmness score relived a good quality trade for carcasses from all diets, in spite of higher yellowness and lower firmness recorded for linseed diet (P<0.05), which were moderately improved by rosemary combination with linseed. To conclude, the Barbarine cull ewes could gain up to 120 g/day in BW. The used diets permitted this BW gain without undesirable effects on carcass characteristics and meat quality. However, the study of meat fatty acid profile and antioxidant status should continue.  相似文献

Twenty healthy growing male kids (Sannen × Beetal and Alpine × Beetal) of 2–3 months of age, weighing 12 ± 0.61 kg, were randomly assigned to one to four dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Two types of isonitrogenous and isocaloric concentrate mixtures were fed to kids in four treatments being: untreated mustard cake, untreated mustard cake with molasses, formaldehyde treated mustard cake and formaldehyde treated mustard cake with molasses. Both concentrate mixtures were similar in composition with the only difference in RDP and UDP due to replacement of untreated mustard cake by formaldehyde (FA) treated mustard cake. Kids were fed concentrate and forage (berseem hay:wheat straw = 2:1) in a 50:50 ratio. A metabolism experiment of 7 days duration was conducted before the end of the experiment. Kids were housed in individual pens and fed experimental diets for 120 days. No differences occurred in digestibility of DM, OM, CP and NDFom, but ether extract digestion in kids fed FA treated mustard cake was higher (P<0.05). Supplementation of molasses increased apparent nutrient digestibility, without influencing digestion of CP and NDFom. Intake of DM, CP and ME did not differ among treatments. The CP content of the diet actually consumed that was supplemented with molasses was lower (P<0.01), with a higher (P<0.01) ME content, without influence of FA treatment on nutritive level of the diet consumed. N balance was higher (P<0.01) in kids fed FA treated MC and supplemental molasses. Microbial protein yield, calculated from purine derivatives excreted in urine, was similar among treatments. The DM intake in the growth experiment was higher by feeding both FA treated MC and molasses. Average daily gain was influenced by feeding FA treated MC, without any effect of supplemental molasses on growth rate of the kids. The higher DM intake and improved growth rate in kids fed FA treated MC resulted better feed efficiency. Higher UDP intake improved growth performance in kids and supplementation of molasses, with or without ruminal escape CP, has no added advantage.  相似文献

The first study aimed to evaluate the effect of drinking water disinfection (chlorination: NaClO 15%) and conditioning (acidification: H3PO4 diluted 1:5 in water) on water quality, water and feed consumption, apparent total tract digestibility, and its potential hazardous effects on Holstein bulls fed high-concentrate diets. Twenty-four animals (221 ± 20.9 kg of BW, and 184 ± 9.9 days of age) were individually assigned to one of four treatments according to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement: conditioning (with or without acidification) and disinfection (with or without chlorination). The entire study lasted 210 days. Physicochemical and microbiological water quality, water and feed consumption, haematological and biochemical blood parameters, and apparent total tract digestibility were measured; data were analysed via a mixed-effects model. Chlorination and acidification increased (P = 0.02) free residual chlorine in water, and chlorination reduced (P = 0.01) total coliform and Clostridium perfringens counts in water. Treatment did not affect water consumption, total DM intake, or blood parameters. At the beginning of the study, NDF digestibility decreased (P = 0.04) with acidification, however, this was restored at the end of the study. The second study evaluated the potential benefit of drinking water chlorination and acidification on the performance of crossbred Holstein bulls fed high-concentrate diets under commercial conditions. Ninety-six animals (322 ± 35.0 kg of BW, and 220 ± 14.2 days of age) were allocated into six pens assigned to one of the two treatments: untreated drinking water or drinking water treated with chlorination and acidification for a total of 112 days. Physicochemical and microbiological water quality, water and concentrate consumption, eating behaviour, growth performance, and carcass quality were analysed via a mixed-effects model. Water conditioning and disinfection increased (P = 0.01) free residual chlorine concentration and reduced (P = 0.04) total coliform count in water. Although water consumption and eating behaviour were similar between treatments, water conditioning and disinfection increased average daily weight gain (P = 0.03), BW before slaughter (P = 0.01), and hot carcass weight (P = 0.01). In conclusion, drinking water chlorination and acidification in fattening dairy beef bulls is recommended as it improves growth performance without any detrimental side effects on health or nutrient digestibility.  相似文献

Leaf maturation in mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) is characterized by rapid shifts in the types of dominant phenolics: from carbon-economic flavonoids aglycons in flushing leaves, via hydrolysable tannins and flavonoid glycosides, to carbon-rich proanthocyanidins (condensed tannins) in mature foliage. This shift accords with the suggested trade-offs between carbon allocation to plant defense and growth, but may also relate to the simultaneous decline in nutritive leaf traits, such as water, proteins and sugars, which potentially limit insect growth. To elucidate how birch leaf quality translates into insect growth, I introduce a simple model that takes into account defensive compounds but also acknowledges insect demand for nutritive compounds. The effects of defensive compounds on insect growth depend strongly on background variation in nutritive leaf traits: compensatory feeding on low nutritive diets increases the intake of defensive compounds, and the availability of growth-limiting nutritive compounds may modify the effects of defenses. The ratio of consumption to larval growth (both in dry mass) increases very rapidly with leaf maturation: from 2.9 to 9.8 over 2 weeks in June-July, and to 15 by August. High concentrations in mature birch leaves of "quantitative" defenses, such as proanthocyanidins (15-20% of dry mass), presumably prevent further consumption. If the same compounds had also protected half-grown leaves (which supported the same larval growth with only one third of the dry matter consumption of older leaves), the same intake of proanthocyanidins would have demanded improbably high concentrations (close to 50%) in young leaves. The model thus suggests an adaptive explanation for the high levels of "quantitative" defenses, such as proanthocyanidins, in low-nutritive but not in high-nutritive leaves because of the behavioral responses of insect feeding to leaf nutritive levels.  相似文献

Oxalic acid (as oxalate) was detected in four tubers commonly used for food in Nigeria-Dioscorea rotundata (White yam), Solanum tuberosum (Irish potato), Ipomoea batatas (Sweet potato), and Manihot esculenta (cassava). Whereas healthy I. batata had the highest oxalic acid content, healthy M. esculenta contained the lowest. When all tubers were artifically inoculated with four fungi-Penicillium oxalicum CURIE and THOM, Aspergillus niger VAN TIEGH, A. flavus and A. tamarii KITA, there was an increase in oxalate content/g of tuber tissue. The greatest amount of oxalate was produced by P. oxalicum in D. rotundata tuber. Consistently higher amounts of oxalate were produced by the four fungi in infected sweet potato tuber than in any other tuber and consistently lower amounts of oxalate were produced by the four fungi in Irish potato tuber. Differences in the carbohydrate type present in the tubers and in the biosynthesis pathway are thought to be responsible for variation in the production of oxalate in the different tubers by the four fungi used.  相似文献

Three experiments were carried out to study the effect of chemical treatment on the nutritive value of wheat straw (WS) and the effect of diets containing such treated straw and poultry litter (PL) on the performance of fattening cattle and lactating beef cows. The chemical treatment consisted of treating half of the wheat straw with 60 kg sodium hydroxide/t and the other with 60 kg sulphuric acid/t, and then mixing the two to give “Celephos”. The digestibility coefficient of organic matter was 68.0 and 41.7 for “Celephos” and untreated straw, respectively. For a long term feeding trial, two mixtures were formulated: (a) including 23% WS and 19% PL; (b) including 30% chemically treated WS and 16% PL. A conventional high grain fattening diet (c) served as control. The metabolizable energy concentrations in the above diets were 2.37, 2.38 and 2.78 Mcal/kg DM. Protein content of the diets was regulated by PL or soya bean meal. Liveweight gain was 1059, 1137 and 1180 g/day, metabolizable energy conversion ratio to liveweight was 22.8, 20.7 and 20.0 Mcal/kg, and carcass gain was 565, 606 and 656 g/day for treatment groups (a), (b) and (c), respectively. In a third trial, lactating beef cows were fed on long straw or Celephos, PL and 1.5 kg grain per head per day. Intake of Celephos was 28% higher than that of untreated straw and milk output was 3 kg/day higher. This was reflected in an increase of 67 g/day in gain of suckled calves.  相似文献

Extracts from the tubers (cortex and parenchyma) and leaves of Manihot esculenta Crantz (cassava) were analyzed for their releasable cyanide content using flow injection analysis incorporating an immobilized linamarase bioreactor. Linamarase was immobilized under very mild conditions to an activated 2-fluoro-N-methylpyridinium Fractogel support. The released cyanide, which was monitored spectrophotometrically at 525 nm using an alkaline picrate reagent, was found to be highest in the cortex and lowest in the parenchyma.  相似文献

The objective was to evaluate the inclusion of macaúba seed cake (MSC) meal in diets for growing rabbits by assessing their growth and slaughtering performance, haematological traits, nutritional contribution of caecotrophs, in vitro digestibility, degradability and fermentation parameters. A total of 88 rabbits were distributed to four groups with 22 animals each and fed diets containing 0, 50, 100 and 150 g/kg of MSC, respectively. The in vitro assays were conducted employing cecum inoculum on the same dietary treatments. The inclusion of MSC yielded a quadratic effect on in vitro dry matter digestibility (< 0.001). The maximum amount of produced gas was raised linearly with the inclusion of MSC (p = 0.016). MSC linearly reduced several variables as the nutritional contribution of caecotrophs in dry matter (p = 0.017) and crude protein (p = 0.014), live weight at 51 d (p = 0.024), body weight gain (p = 0.039), average daily feed intake (ADFI) (p = 0.001) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (p = 0.007) in the first period evaluated (30–50 d); furthermore the ADFI and FCR the second (51–72 d) and whole period (30–72 d) (p < 0.001). MSC addition caused a quadratic effect on white blood cells count (p = 0.026) and a linear decrease of eosinophils (p = 0.045). In conclusion, the inclusion of up to 150 g/kg of MSC improves the in vitro digestibility and fermentation potential of the diets, reflecting on the ADFI and FCR of the animals, although adverse effects are observed on the weight of the commercial carcass and nutritive contribution of the caecotrophs.  相似文献
