An updated version of external dose modeling is presented with reference to the population in Russian areas contaminated due to the Chernobyl accident. An earlier version has been modified by applying a study time interval with a starting point immediately after radionuclide deposition (rather than 4 years after the accident as applied earlier) and by introducing an estimate of individual dose distributions. New input data to the model are the nuclide-specific composition of the deposit, additional data about migration of caesium in soil, time dependence of location factors and uncertainty distributions of all input parameters. Model results (i.e. effective dose-rates and accumulated effective doses) from external exposure for the rural and urban populations in contaminated areas of Russia during 100 years after the accident are presented. Radionuclide contributions to the dose during various time intervals after the accident have been estimated. The model has been validated by measurements of absorbed dose-rate in air during the first 30 days after the accident and by TLD measurements of individual external doses among inhabitants of contaminated rural settlements in the year 1993. Both the measurements and model show that the geometric mean of individual external doses is about 10% lower than the arithmetic mean and the upper bound of the 95% confidence range is larger by a factor of about 2.  相似文献

The western Bryansk region in south-western Russia was highly contaminated with 137Cs and 134Cs due to the Chernobyl accident in 1986. In 1990, a joint Nordic-Russian project was initiated in order to make measurements and estimates of the absorbed doses to selected groups of inhabitants in this area. The participating individuals were living in small villages with contamination levels between 0.9 and 2.7 MBq m–2. Only some villages had been decontaminated. Both schoolchildren and adults participated in the study and the number of persons was between 100 and 130 each year, residing in 5 villages. Every year in September–October, from 1990 to 1998, we performed individual measurements of external absorbed doses, assessed with thermoluminescent (TL) dosemeters (LiF). The mean effective dose per year from external irradiation due to the Chernobyl accident of the inhabitants in the villages ranged between 0.8 and 2.9 mSv during the study period and decreased with an apparent half-time of 3.7–8.2 years, depending on village and group. The highest individual doses within one village were, on average higher by a factor of 3 than the mean value for that village. Under the conservative assumption of a decrease rate in the external effective dose of 2% per year after 1998, individuals in the most highly exposed village are assumed to receive a life-time effective dose of about 75 mSv (between 1986 and 2056) from external exposure to caesium radionuclides. The mean value for the villages under study was estimated to be around 65 mSv using the assumed rate of decrease. Received: 20 December 2000 / Accepted: 1 October 2001  相似文献

A new system of evaluation methods has been developed for the assessment of the accumulated internal irradiation doses in the inhabitants of the populated areas of the Republic of Belarus that were contaminated by the Chernobyl radionuclides. The system is based on the results of WBC measurements. The model is based on the WBC-results of the State Dosimetric Register for the period of 1987-2010. The dose assessment model is based on the classification of the populated areas, on the regional features of the soils through which 137Cs can enter into the locally grown and produced foods. The model is also based on building the regressive correlations of accumulated internal doses to the contamination density of the territory of a populated area. Such regressive correlations are made for each region. The influence of indirect factors of dose forming was taken into consideration in the dose assessment. Among these factors are the population of the area, and the amount of forested territory around it, which were taken as correction coefficients. The coefficients were determined from the regressive correlation of the correction coefficients to a specific area of forest for each region. So called "countermeasure factor" was used for specification of other model results.  相似文献

After a large-scale contamination of an urban area with γ-ray emitting radionuclides (e.g. caesium isotopes) decision makers will need guidance as to its potential radiological consequences and to optimum means of mitigation. To provide such information, a dynamic radioecological model PARATI has been developed and used to simulate the contamination of realistic urban environments in a computer model and to estimate the various radiation fields in such environments. In this study, the computer-simulated realistic behaviour and movements of individuals and populations in such radiation fields are described, and the resulting radiation exposures and their variabilities are estimated. For the scenarios considered, the doses of individuals in the same contaminated environment may vary by more than one order of magnitude. Studies on population habits and on the behaviour of radionuclides on important urban surfaces even a long time after the contamination might reduce the uncertainty considerably. An assessment of effectiveness of the administering of single dose of stable iodine in Poland on the reduction of 131I doses in thyroid has been performed. 5-compartment model of metabolism of iodine developed by Johnson has been used to evaluate predicted levels of stable iodine and 131I content in thyroid and commitment dose equivalent H50 for different doses of stable iodine and various age and sex group population. The measured values of 131I concentration in air and in milk and standard values for milk and food consumption and inhalation rate as well as metabolic parameters were used. Theoretical calculations showed that administering of stable iodine on 1986-04-28, 1986-04-29, 1986-04-30 and 1986-05-01 could have reduced committed dose equivalent H50 form ingestion with inhalation pathway by about 44%, 40%, 26%, 12% respectively. On the basis of measured 131I activity in the thyroid for inhabitants from different districts in Poland (1400 measurement) committed dose equivalents were determined and analysis of radiation hazard from 131I were performed. In the most contaminated regions of Poland average H50 doses for children 1-5 and 5-10 years old are close to 50 mSv (permissible level for population) and maximal doses exceed this limit four times. These maximal doses occurred for about from 5% inhabitants from these area. In the moderate and low contaminated regions of Poland the average doses are fivefold and tenfold less respectively.  相似文献

The main results of the complex examination of the genome instability are presented in children constantly living on territories contaminated with radionuclides as a result of the accident at the CNPP (Novozybkov district, Bryansk region, 16-18 Ci/km2, 137Cs) and in children exposed to low-intensity radiation at different stages of ontogenetic development: children exposed to postnatal irradiation in 1986 (born before the accident), children exposed to intrauterine irradiation during the accident in 1986, children of irradiated parents born after the accident in 1987-1992 and in 1994-2000. In all examined groups of irradiated children increased frequencies of certain radiation-induced chromosome aberrations were observed as well as a reduced activity of unscheduled synthesis of genomic DNA in lymphocytes and peculiarities in individual heterozygosity of genes encoding structural and enzymatic proteins of blood. An increased radiosensitivity of lymphocyte genomes to testing in vitro irradiation and peculiarities in the dynamics of the frequencies of chromosome aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges in 3 cell generations were revealed in children from the contaminated areas. The data obtained suggest a systemic character of dysgenomic effects, the reality of induction of genome instability in the growing organism of children exposed to low-intensity radiation at low doses the expression of which is determined by individual genotypic features of the organism. Biological significance of the phenomenon of the post-radiation genome instability, its relation to the state of health and the pathogenetic role in the development of somatic pathology are postulated.  相似文献

For the current on-site evaluation of the environmental contamination and contributory external exposure after the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) and the nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Testing Site (SNTS), the concentrations of artificial radionuclides in soil samples from each area were analyzed by gamma spectrometry. Four artificial radionuclides (241Am, 134Cs, 137Cs, and 60Co) were detected in surface soil around CNPP, whereas seven artificial radionuclides (241Am, 57Co, 137Cs, 95Zr, 95Nb, 58Co, and 60Co) were detected in surface soil around SNTS. Effective doses around CNPP were over the public dose limit of 1 mSv/y (International Commission on Radiological Protection, 1991). These levels in a contaminated area 12 km from Unit 4 were high, whereas levels in a decontaminated area 12 km from Unit 4 and another contaminated area 15 km from Unit 4 were comparatively low. On the other hand, the effective doses around SNTS were below the public dose limit. These findings suggest that the environmental contamination and effective doses on the ground definitely decrease with decontamination such as removing surface soil, although the effective doses of the sampling points around CNPP in the present study were all over the public dose limit. Thus, the remediation of soil as a countermeasure could be an extremely effective method not only for areas around CNPP and SNTS but also for areas around the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP), and external exposure levels will be certainly reduced. Long-term follow-up of environmental monitoring around CNPP, SNTS, and FNPP, as well as evaluation of the health effects in the population residing around these areas, could contribute to radiation safety and reduce unnecessary exposure to the public.  相似文献

A method for calculating the exposures of terrestrial animals in areas contaminated with radionuclides using a point source dose function is presented. To take into account scattered γ-radiation, the Berger formula for dose buildup factor in an infinite air medium has been parameterized. In the dosimetric model proposed, an animal phantom is presented as a parallelepiped to estimate external exposures and as a tissue-quivalent sphere to estimate internal doses. Using analytical expressions, dose rate conversion coefficients for external and internal exposures of animals have been estimated for individual radionuclides. For energies of γ-rays above 50 keV, the results are in good agreement with those estimated by the Monte Carlo method for ellipsoidal phantoms of animals.  相似文献

For assessment of external radiation doses to frogs in a wetland area contaminated with 137Cs, frog phantoms were constructed from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The frog phantoms contained thermoluminescence (TL) chips and were used in situ at two study sites to measure doses. To test if higher doses are received by the sensitive skin of frogs, extra-thin TL chips were applied close to the surface of the frog phantoms. In addition, the measured doses were compared with those calculated on the basis of soil sample data from the wetland multiplied with dose-conversion coefficients from the US Department of Energy’s RESRAD-BIOTA code and from the ERICA assessment tool. Measured doses were generally lower than those calculated to ellipsoids used to model frogs. Higher doses were measured at the frog phantoms’ surfaces in comparison to inner parts at one of the two sites indicating that the frogs’ thin skin could receive a higher radiation dose than expected. In the efforts to assure protection of non-human biota, in situ measurements with phantoms provide valuable dose information and input to dose models in site-specific risk assessments of areas contaminated with radionuclides.  相似文献

Examination of 339 children at the age of 2 to 12 years, living in the caesium contaminated region (from 2 to 5 Ci/km2) has revealed that total radioactivity of their urine is, on the average, twice as high as that of children living in "pure" regions. Quantitative and qualitative changes were observed in the erythroid series, neutrophilic leukocytes, eosinophils and B-lymphocytes of the peripheral blood of children subjected to long-term low-level irradiation. It should be noted that the character and direction of these changes were a function of the children's age and the level of total radioactivity of their urine.  相似文献

Eighteen Ukrainian evacuees from the Chernobyl exclusive zone, twenty one inhabitants of radioactively contaminated areas of Belarus and twelve control donors age-matched to the exposed persons were investigated 14-15 years after the Chernobyl accident for chromosomal aberration yields detected in blood lymphocytes by fluorescence in situ hybridisation technique. Unstable aberration yields measured in both Chernobyl cohorts were close to the background frequencies. Positive age-dependence trends in control donors were determined for the all type stable aberration levels. In evacuees the tendency for diminishing the difference between them and controls for stable aberration levels with persons' age increasing was found. The total stable chromosome exchange yields in evacuees 46-55 years old and inhabitants of areas with low contamination level didn't exceed the control values, but for younger evacuees and inhabitants of sufficiently contaminated regions the statistical increase above the age relevant background meanings was detected for this end-point. The advantages of using the FISH-detectable stable aberrations and particularly the total level of stable chromosome exchanges as the end-points for retrospective biological indication of past radiation exposure in Chernobyl cohorts were discussed.  相似文献

Cancer morbidity and mortality were studied in areas of the Kaluga oblast contaminated with radionuclides. The main objective of the study was to assess the influence of radiation exposure on existing levels of cancer morbidity and mortality. Time trends and relative population risks were analysed. Based on this analysis, it was concluded that the current levels of morbidity from cancers among the populations residing in the studied areas were primarily a result of a complex of factors which predated the exposure from the Chernobyl accident. However, there seems to be an unfavourable trend concerning malignant neoplasms of the respiratory organs for women residing in the contaminated areas. To date, no statistically significant effect of radiation on cancer morbidity (except for thyroid cancer in women) has been noted. The levels of cancer morbidity and mortality in the contaminated areas generally reflect the changes in cancer incidence in the oblast as a whole. The findings are consistent with international data on latent periods for the induction of radiogenic cancers and the biological effects for similar levels of exposure to populations residing in contaminated territories. Further studies are necessary in order to monitor possible effects that are related to the accident.  相似文献

Dosimetric models have been developed to estimate the exposure doses of woody plants growing in the area contaminated by long-lived radionuclides. The models are parameterized based on the data obtained from the experimental plots in the south-west districts of the Bryansk region affected by radioactive fallout of the Chernobyl NPP accident. Doses are estimated to generative organs of pine trees from these plots. The contribution from various sources and types of ionizing radiation to the absorbed dose formation for these objects is determined.  相似文献

Following the Chernobyl accident, the most significant problem for the population of the former Soviet Union for the next 50-70 years will be chronic internal contamination by radionuclides. One of the few experiments carried out in this field reported that neurotransmitter metabolism in the central nervous system of the rat was disturbed after feeding with oats contaminated by 137Cs for 1 month. The present study assessed the effect of chronic contamination by depleted U or 137Cs on the metabolism of two neurotransmitters in cerebral areas of rats. Dopamine and serotonin were chosen because their metabolism has been shown to be disturbed after external irradiation, even at moderate doses. Dopamine, serotonin, and some of their catabolites were measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled with an electrochemical detector in five cerebral structures of rats contaminated over a 1-month period by drinking water (40 mg U.L -1 or 6500 Bq 137Cs.L -1). In the striatum, hippocampus, cerebral cortex, thalamus, and cerebellum, the dopamine, serotonin, and catabolite levels were not significantly different between the control rats and rats contaminated by U or 137Cs. These results are not in accordance with those previously described.  相似文献

The selected results of the cytogenetic studies of the Chernobyl accident consequences were summarised. The chromosomal aberrations were used as a method of biodosimetry for a dose assessment for victims during the initial period after the Chernobyl accident. A good correlation between doses calculated based on chromosomal aberrations (dicentrics) and severity of acute radiation syndrome observed in clinic was found. The biodosimetry based on conventional cytogenetic technique (dicentrics) has been unsuccessful for various groups (rehabilitation workers, evacuees, inhabitants of contaminated areas) sampled long time after the Chernobyl accident. The possible reasons of the failure are analysed. The original results of multiaberration cell yield observed in different cohorts of the Chernobyl victims are presented. The problems related to the phenomena are discussed.  相似文献

Concentrations of 137Cs and 226Ra in the diet (foodstuffs and drinking water) of adult inhabitants in the high-level natural radiation area (HLNRA) of Ramsar, Iran have been determined. The annual intake of foodstuffs was estimated on the basis of their average annual consumption. Food samples collected from local markets were analyzed by means of a gamma spectrometer. The estimated annual dietary intakes of 137Cs and 226Ra were 130Bq and 245Bq, respectively. The concentrations of natural radionuclides in food and drinking water of the residents are higher than the world average, and are correlated with the high concentration of these radionuclides in soil and water. Calculations were also made to determine the potential dose to an individual consuming such diets.  相似文献

Germline mutation at eight human minisatellite loci has been studied among families from rural areas of the Kiev and Zhitomir regions of Ukraine, which were heavily contaminated by radionuclides after the Chernobyl accident. The control and exposed groups were composed of families containing children conceived before and after the Chernobyl accident, respectively. The groups were matched by ethnicity, maternal age, parental occupation, and smoking habits, and they differed only slightly by paternal age. A statistically significant 1.6-fold increase in mutation rate was found in the germline of exposed fathers, whereas the maternal germline mutation rate in the exposed families was not elevated. These data, together with the results of our previous analysis of the exposed families from Belarus, suggest that the elevated minisatellite mutation rate can be attributed to post-Chernobyl radioactive exposure. The mechanisms of mutation induction at human minisatellite loci are discussed.  相似文献

This paper focuses on a survey of uranium and thorium decay chain radionuclides in food and drinking water from the thorium-rich (monazite-bearing) region of Buena, which is located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The radionuclide concentration values in the food and drinking water from Buena reached values higher than 100-fold the international reference values. The daily intake of radionuclides by the local population is similar to that of another high background radiation area in Brazil, but the intake is higher than that of residents from a normal background radiation area. Approximately 58?% of the food consumed by Buena inhabitants is produced locally. Based on that figure, locally produced food and the dilution of total radionuclides in the diet of residents caused by food importation are both highly relevant to a population’s intake of radionuclides. The concentration values for 210Pb and the radium isotopes in drinking water from Buena are among the highest values to be reported in the literature. 228Ra is the most important radionuclide ingested with both food and water among the inhabitants of Buena.  相似文献

This study considers the exposure of the population of the most contaminated Gomel and Mogilev Oblasts in Belarus to prolonged sources of irradiation resulting from the Chernobyl accident. Dose reconstruction methods were developed and applied in this study to estimate the red bone-marrow doses (RBMs) from (i) external irradiation from gamma-emitting radionuclides deposited on the ground and (ii) 134Cs, 137Cs and 90Sr ingestion with locally produced foodstuffs. The mean population-weighted RBM doses accumulated during 35 years after the Chernobyl accident were 12 and 5.7 mGy for adult residents in Gomel and Mogilev Oblasts, respectively, while doses for youngest age groups were 20–40% lower. The highest mean area-specific RBM doses for adults accumulated in 1986–2021 were 63, 56 and 46 mGy in Narovlya, Vetka and Korma raions in Gomel Oblast, respectively. For most areas, external irradiation was the predominant pathway of exposure (60–70% from the total dose), except for areas with an extremely high aggregated 137Cs soil to cow’s milk transfer coefficient (≥?5.0 Bq L?1 per kBq m?2), where the contribution of 134Cs and 137Cs ingestion to the total RBM dose was more than 70%. The contribution of 90Sr intake to the total RBM dose did not exceed 4% for adults and 10% for newborns in most raion in Gomel and Mogilev Oblasts. The validity of the doses estimated in this study was assessed by comparison with doses obtained from measurements by thermoluminescence dosimeters and whole-body counters done in 1987–2015. The methodology developed in this study can be used to calculate doses to target organs other than RBM such as thyroid and breast doses. The age-dependent and population-weighted doses estimated in this study are useful for ecological epidemiological studies, for projection of radiation risk, and for justification of analytical epidemiological studies in populations exposed to Chernobyl fallout.
